JJ: Isignedacontractin1989anditwas completedinthefallof1999.Therewere alotoffund-raiserslikeconcerts,bake sales,etc.,raisingalotofinterest,butnot much monev.

JJ: Attheendofthe19thcentury,the NantucketMeeting1lousebuildingwas soldtosomeonewhouseditasastorage facilitvandtookoutthefrontofthe buildingtoputinarollingdoorfor trucks.Weworkedfroman1SS1photo¬ graphshowingwhatthefrontwallhad been.Therewereportionsofthefloor¬ ing.wainscoting,plastercoverceiling, casingsofposts,andwindowsashthatwc preservedandusedasmodelsforreplica¬ tion.Whenwelooktheheavierplanking offthatwasputovertheoriginalfloors, wesawpaintmarksonthefloorthatgave usadearideaofthelengthandplace¬ mentofthepews.Wewereableto designnewpewsbasedonevidencefrom animprintonthewainscotingandapew doorthatwasinalocalmuseum.

HowdoestheNantucketproject comparetoPortland’sAbyssinianproject?

JJ:TI icAfricanmeetinghouseisan importantreminderoftheroleblacks playedinthehistoryofcoastalNew Kugland.Blacksresidedintheseareasin the1800s.mostworkinginthewhaling

andseafaringindustriesastheseports begantoshipworldwide.Therewasalso heavyactivityintheAbolitionistmove¬ mentasslavesescapedandenteredthe thrivingseafaringcommunitv.These buildingsweretheheartoftheblack communities,andbuiltatsimilartimes (Nantucketin1822andPortlandin1828).

By the end of the 19th centurv things droppedoff,bothinNantucketand Portland.Therewerenojobs. Portlandalsolostmostoftheprom¬ inent members of the Abvssinian when theS.S.Portland sank[W'interguide 1999]. As the membership declined, theycouldn’tsupportthebuildings.

Bothmeetinghousesunderwentsimilar transitionstoprivateuse.Nantucketisa smallbuilding,about26’x36’,whereas the/Abyssinianismuchlarger.36’x49’, andonthreelevels.Itoriginalhhada basementlevelandthenameetinglevel onthemainfloor.Itnowhasfourlevels thathadbeenoccupiedwhenitturned intoapartments.

Oneofthedifferencesindoingthe Portlandprojectisthatwedon’thaveas muchinformationaboutittoremodel. Alientheyturneditintoapartments,so muchwasrippedout.Thevtookthe mainfloorandbuiltanintermediate floorwithinthesanctuary.T’hatreallv destroyedtheoriginaldesign.Thestairs weretakenout.Alotofthingsjustdisa]>peared.W’chavesomeearlvdrawingsand oneveryunclearphotothatshowsvvhere theoriginalentrancewasandthatithad largewindowsonthesideandfront. Iherearcthingswewillneverknow.

Wedohaveonething,however,that wedidnothaveinNantucket,andthatis theoriginalpews.Theyweresoldtoa groupinWestParis,wherethevarestill beingused.W’ccanexactlvrepiicatc them.W'ealsohavetheoriginalfloors thatshowhowthepewswent.Thevwere mortisedintothefloor.Thatstheonlv dearartifactfromthebuilding.

1heAbvssinianalsowillbeamuch moreexpensiveproject.Itwillrequirea lotofgoodpublicandprivatesupport. But,liketheNantucketproject,whenthat buildingisredoneitwillberedonejustas >twas.Bypreservingandreusingasmuch oftheoriginalbuildingandfabricas possible,wewillcreateaspacethatwillbe "1keepingwiththeoriginalinappearance an dspirit.Theresultingstructureshould e'okeafeelingofwhatitwasliketobein hatbuildinginthe19thcenturv.

JJ: Yougetitbacktobeingasaccurate aspossibletowhatithadbeen.Then whenvisitorswalkintothatspacethey seethebuilding’soriginalvolumeand space,thelightcominginasitdid,and thepewsintheproperpositioii.Thefirst time1walkedintotheNantucket building,therewasafeelingaboutthe space.Ihaven’tbeenabletogetthatat theAbyssinian.Youdon’tgettheimpact oftheoverallsizebecauseithasbeenso choppedup.Thenatureofreligious spaceshassomethingtodowithawe. With 17 other Mainers, he embarked upon the Dublin Marathon in 2000, his wildest running adventuretodate.

“Afterthelongtrip overfromtheStates,” Payson remembers, “it wasabsolutely miserable. We ran in what amounts to a hurricane:thewindat 20to40knotsand pourrrrringrain.It was40degrees;so coldyoucouldn’tgrab acupofwaterfrom thevolunteers.”
