Onceuponatime-anduntilfairly recently-intherainvseaportcitv ofIlamburg,Germans,nottoo farfromtheinfamous Reeperhahn redlightdistrict,therewasarestaurant calledKennebunkport.

ItspecializedinMainelobster,an expensivedelicacyinEurope.Greeting customersattheentrancewas“Kennv,"a life-sizedstatueofaMainefisherman.St. GeorgesculptorSteveLindsavhadmade itfromasingleMainepinelog.Rockport artistz\nneKilhamhaddesigned decorationsforthedinnerplates.The goblets,madebvRichardRemsenof Rockport,wereshapedlikelobsterclaws.

Althoughtherestaurantservedreal MaineblueberriesandAddleheads(from cans),alsoonKennebunkport’smenu weretheunusualMainespecialtiesof lobstersausageand“Rudolphburgcrs,” madeofreindeermeat.

AsSteveLindsavsavs,“allimagesget twistedwhenyoumovethemaround."

ThistwistedimageofMainewaswrung fromthelushimaginationofacertain “1lerrS.,”arich,eccentricindustrialde¬ signerwho,Lindsavsavs.claimedthatTed Kennedyhadhadhimkickedoutofthe resorttownofKennebunkportafterastay theresomeyearsback.TorecreateaKen¬ nebunkportinIlamburg,hesweptinto Maineinthemid-1990swithhisentour¬ age,wentupanddownthecoastcom¬ missioningandbuvingthings,andeven¬ tuallyflewIJudsavtoIlamburgtoensure thatthestatuewasproperlyinstalled.

ThelastthatI.indsayheardof“IlerrS.;” hehadlostcontrolofKennebunkport. Maxbethestainless-steel,computercontrolledlobsterautoclaveheinvented (“Disistmvsecret.Ihavenochef.") didn’tworkcorrectly.Regardless,thenew ownerscalledLindsavtoinquireifhe couldmake200moresix-foot-tallstatues. TheyenvisionedachainofKennebunk-

portsthroughoutGcrmam.Lindsav declined.Theideaforthechain,aswell asfortherestaurantitself,appearstobe defunct.Kennebunkportisnolonger listedintheIlamburgphonedirectory. Sometimeswhenvousquintatsome¬ thingfromfarawawtheimagegetsdistort¬ ed;sometimesvouseeclearlythebasicsof whatyou’relookingat.Soitiswiththe stateof.Maine,asrevealedinthevarious wavsforeignersperceiveourhomeland. In1924theKuKluxKlanclaimedto havemorethan50,000membersin Maine.Thesenumbersseemratherhigh, butitisafacttheKKKmarchedthrough Maineinthe1920sburningcrosses, insultingforeignersandtheirchurches, andevengainingpoliticalpowerinthe statecapitol.Oneoftheirnumber,Ralph OwenBrewster,ranforgovernor.Their PortlandheadquarterswasonBaxter Boulevard.Fewneighborsgrievedwhen thelargewhitestructurewasburnedto thegroundandreplacedbyBaxterPlace. Illisstoryisoneofthoseunsavoryones connectedwiththeusuallygood-natured stanceofMaineindependentparties.

Butthat’sthewaytheLancastersare.'Iliepeople onEdna’sdeadhusband’ssideandallofEdna’sfire daughtersturnedoutpureLancaster,pronetohalftruths,baldlies,andgrabbingeven’thingtheycan get.Thishappenedjustafterhervoungestdaughter borrowedEdna’sweedwhackerandsolditatayard sale.Ednahadenoughofit.Shecameoutherfront doorandcrossedthehighwaycomingtowardus. Herstainedcottondressdraggedontheblacktop. Besides,thehousewasovergrownwithshrubsand volunteertrees.OldmanLancastertoldmyfather, youcan’tsecthesiding,anyway,andthebrushcuts

thewindandsavesheatingoil.lireLancasters weren’ttheonlyfamilyaroundherewhothought likethat.Theywerejusttheonlyoneswhohada houseinthecenteroftown.

WedroveEdnatoKmart,andoutofherapron pocketshepulledaman’swalletthickwithdull greendollars.Shewasonherwavupthehardware aisletobuypadlocksvvhenshestoppeddeadinher brownleatherslippersinfrontofadisplayof Christmastreelights.Youcouldseehermind workingbehindherdirtyglasses.

Shehiredustodecorateherhouseandeverything inheryardwithblinkingmulti-coloredlights.Istarted ontheoutsidethatevening,andittrxrkmeaweek workingeverydayafterschool.Wewentbackfor morelightsalmosteveryday.ShehadCheryldothe inside,andshesetupaplastictreeinthefrontroom decoratedvvithtiny,whiteflashinglights.Thehouse lookedwonderfulatnight.Brightandtwinkling.It mademesmiletolookatit.Itmadeallofussmile.

Oneofherdaughtersorason-in-lawwoulddrop byjustabouteverynighttotrytogethertostop wastingmoneyandpower.Theargumentswere loudandfunnytoussittingacrossthestreet.I rememberoneofthedaughtersgoingonandon abouttheconspiracyofCerrtralMainePowerto ownallofMaine.Siresaidthetelephonepoles were justthebeginning.

Butherdaughterscouldnotseemtogettheir schemingpowerfocusedonEdnaanvlonger.In fact,theircharmsandtricksdidnotseemtoworkall thatwellanywhereanymore.Nowtheywerethe 'daughtersofCrazyEdna,’andsavingMerrv Christmastooneofthemwasguaranteedtocreatea hystericaloutburst.

Edna’shousecoloredthenightallthrough December and January. Sometime in February we realizedthatEditawasgoingtoturnonherlights everynightallyearlong.Overtheyearsshehired

otherkidstoaddmorelightsandreplacethe burnt-outstrings.Iendedupplowingand landscapingforaliving,andIboughtahousejust downthestreetfromEdna’s.Iwasaround,soI wouldcheckonhertwoorthreetimesaweek. CherylandIhadBenandthenAlex.Thekids likedvisitingEdnaandrunningaroundthehouse whereitwasalwaysChristmas.

Butdon’tgetmewrong.Itwasn’tlikeEdna turnedintosomekindoflapcat.Dealingwithher familyhadturnedherhardovertherears,andshe knewherfivedaughtersandtheirhusbandswere justwaitingforhertodie.Shehadhershareofbad moods.SomeofthemrightintheBaglev’sstore. Onesnowynightherlightsdidn'tcomeon.I parkedmyplowtruck,wentinside,andfoundher onthecouch.Shelookedpeacefulwrappedinher favoriteraggedquilt.Iphonedtheminister.ThenI pluggedinthelightsandleft.

OnNovember26,1898,with192 aboardincludingatleast17African AmericanPortlanders(see "S.S.Portland," byHerbAdams,Winterguide1999),the

PortlandsailedfromBoston,Portland¬ bound,despiteseverestormwarnings. Perhapsthepassengerswereeagerfor homeaftertheThanksgivingholiday,or maybeCaptainBlanchardwas overconfidentinthe281-foot,shallow¬ hulledvessel'sabilitytorideoutastorm. ThePortlandnevermadeithome.Instead shesankoffCapeCod;herfinalresting placehasnowbeenconfirmedbythe NationalOceanicandAtmospheric Administration(NOAA).

"Wewerehopefulthatthiswasthewreck -oneofmorethan50anomalieswe'd scannedinthesanctuary-butoncewe wereabovethePortland,it'swasnota gleefulthing...thereisafinalitytoit,"says Smrcina.Thoughtimeandtideshaveswept awaythesuperstructure,remainsofthe smokestacks,paddlewheelwalkingbeams, rudder,andbollardsprovidedfingerprints neededforidentification.Future expeditionswillstudythelargelyintact hull."Weconsideredittoodangerousto sendanyoneintothewreck,"becausea divermightbecaughtinthenets,another victimofacentury-olddisaster.
