SamI,ee,whowasonly14yearsold, openedPortland’sfirstChineselaundry, bearingthegenericname"Chinese laundry.”at522CongressStreetin1877. 11clatermovedto564CongressStreet, whereheoperatedfrom1882to1890.By 1879,therewerefixeChineselaundries inPortland,allofthemwithinafew blocksofMonumentSquare.The1880 censusenumeratedeightChinesemen rangingfrom17to25,allofwhom ownedorworkedinChineselaundries.

AlfredYork,areporterforthePortland DailyEasternArgus,wasinvitedto dinnerbx-theowneroftheW'ahLee LaundrvonCenterStreetoneSunday afternooninthewinterof1881.Mr.York laterwroteanarticledescribingthe laundiy-.thelaundryman.andthemeal. Theshop'sowner,whosenameisnever mentionedbxMr.York,andhis

emploxeefixedandworkedinatworoomspace.Thefrontroom,wherethe customerswereserved,alsofunctionedas theoffice(withanabacus,accountbook, camelhairbrushes,andIndiaink), ironingspaceandplacetostorethe bundlesoffinishedlaundiy.Therear roomfunctionedastheactuallaundry area,sleepingandeatingarea,and occasionallxasatempleforreligious scrxiccs.Thelaundry’sproprietor,dressed inhisSundax-best,greetedhisguest clothedinaknee-lengthbrocaderobe withlongflowingsleevesandaquilted silkcapwitharoundbuttonatthetop. rice,athirdcourseofporkstew,and dessertofcreamcakes,Followingthe meal,thehostproducedcigarstorhimself andhisguest.Theotherkiundrvman smokedacigarette.Mr.'iork’sarticle pronouncedthatcigarIobetheworst he’deversmoked.Thedinnerendedtwo hoursafterithadbegun,whenMr.York finishedanothercupoftea,lacedwith Americanwhiskev.

In1889,fixeChineseendedupinthe policeblotterwhenthevwerearrested bxfixePortlandpoliceofficersand chargedwiththecrimeof"disturbingthe peacebxbeingopcnlxengagedinplaying dominosonSundax.”Wlientheircase cametotrial,theirappearanceincourt createdasensationandapacked courtroom.Thecrowd,however,was disappointedwhentheirattorney.1lanv H.Virgin,Esq.,hadhisclientsentera pleaofnolocontendereandpaxafineof S10each.

Perhapsasaneittcmpttoeradicatesuch actixitiesontheChristianSabbath,two PortlandChurchesorganizedChinese SundaySchools.TheSecondParish (Presbxterian)Churchstartedoneinthe 1880s.TheFirstBaptistChurch,then locatedonCongressStreetacrossfrom LincolnPark,startedaChineseSundax

Schoolin1902whichListedintothe 1950s.TheChinesewhoattendedthese SundinSchoolsmavhavebeenatleastas interestedinlearningUnglishasthex wereinlearningaboutChristianity. Portlandsh'irstBaptistChurchhas continueditsassociationwiththe ChinesecommunitvatitsnewCanco Roadlocation,whereitallowsthe ChineseCospelChurchofPortlandto useitsbuilding.

Itappears,however,thatPortland's Chineseconnnunitvrequiredmorethan adoseofwesternreligiontomeetits socialneeds.In1914,thevorganizedthe ChineseRepublicAssociationofI'ree MasonsandrentedroomsoveraChinese laundryat61PortlandStreet,nearthe siteofBackBayCrill.Althoughthat MasonicI,odgclasteduntilabout192(1, whenitdisappeared,itseemsnottobase beenassociatedwiththeMasonicOrder’s CrandI,odgeofMaine,thelibrarianof whichwassurprisedtohearthatsuchan organizationhadexistedwhenhewas contactedforinformation.

Portland’slongseemstohavebeen quitebenign.SevenChinesemenmetat theofficeofI’rancisW.Sullivan,Usq.,on Julv13,1922,andformedtheCheeKing longasanonprofitcorporation.The tongrentedameetingroomonthe secondflooroveraChineselaundryat 25aUreeStreet.

OnJanuary5,1903,agroupofwhite laundrvmendecidedtoestablish theMainekiundnnien’s Associationlorthetwinpurposesot bringingthelaundrvmentogetherand settinguniformratestobechargedbvall laundriesthroughoutthestate.Thev organizedtheirassociationatameeting andbanquetattheoldWestUndIIntel, whichstoodnearthelocationolthe CrevhotmdBusStationonCongress Street.Racismseemstohaveinfectedthe laundrybusinessattheturnofthe20(11 century,liventhoughtherewere16 ChineselaundriesinPortlandandmam morethroughoutMaine,therewereno Chineseamongthefoundersormembers olthatassociation.

In1882,Congresspassedthefirst

ChineseUxclusionAct,winchprohibited mostChinesefromenteringtheUnited States.TheonhChineseallowedtoenter andremainintheU.S.werediplomats, scholars,andmerchants.ThoseChinese whohadenteredtheU.S.beforethe passageoftheUxclusionActbutwhodid notqualifyforenteringundertheAct wereallowedtoremainhere.Iftheyleft theU.S.,however,foramreason,thev wereprohibitedfromre-entering.

IheChinesearetheonlvethnicgroup everbarredfromimmigratingtothe

DanielKowseemstohave arrivedasastowawayat BassHarborasearlyas 1840,whichwouldputhim hereamongtheearliest Chinesetoarriveinthe U.S.Hisdescendantsstill

liveinMaine.

IInitedStates.In1884,Congresspassed anotherlawprohibitingthewivesof ChinesemenalreadyintheU.S.from enteringthecountry.Becauseofthese laws,vervfewChinesewomenlivedin theIInitedStales.NearlyallofPortland’s Chineseeitherweresinglemenor marriedmenwhosefamiliesremainedin China.NotcontenttokeepChinese womenfromenteringtheU.S.,Congress thenpassedtheCableAct,which,untilit wasamendedin1931,strippedthe Americancitizenshipfromanvwoman whomarriedaChineseman.

OneofthefewChinesefamiliesin PortlandwastheCoonfamily,who operatedalaundryinWoodfordsCorner. Thefather,DoganCoon,hadenlistedin theU.S.ArmyfromPortlandinWAVI.
