Theroleofthekitehenina househasehanged.The kitehenhasbecomethe centerofgravityforthe modcrn-davhouse.Ioday’s kitchenislarger,moreopen, andmoreconnectedtotheotherroomsof thehouse.Moretimeisspentinthe kitchennowthaneverbefore.Itisnot uncommontohavekitchensaslargeas Iivingrooms.Withcomfortablenooksto eat,work,andrelax-televisions,internet access,andwindowseats—there’sreallyno reasontogoanwhereelseduringtheday. SowhenafamilyfromOhioaskedtheir architectsinMainetodesignakitchen andfamilyroomadditiontotheiroceanfronthouseinCapeElizabeth.thefirst sketchesenvisionedalarge,continuous spaceseparatedonlybyalow,double¬ tiered(.liningcounter.Coveredwitha broad,slopingroofandsurroundedbya coveredporchwithstrikingviewsofthe oceanandmeadows,thefamilyroom andkitchenworkasone.Asoaring paintedwoodceilingextendsoverboth rooms,makingthespacefeelmuch largerthanitssquarefootage.Abovethe familyroom,alargeclerestorywindow opensthespacetobigviewsofthesky.
