A child should see a dentist between the ages of one and two. Your dentist can detect early problems and teach your child proper brushing and flossing techniques. It’s been more than 20 years since singer/songwriter ChristineLavin firstwarnedastarry-eyedworldthat Prince Charles’s impending marriage was doomed. (“Maybe you got pan¬ ickythinkingyouwerelosingyour looks-confidentially,Chuck,yougot nolookstolose.”)
An appearance on the Today Show as part of the wedding coverage should have been her shining moment. Instead, she recalls with her trademark soft chuckle, “they made mewriteanewending[theoriginalof whichtheyfelt denigrated the Queen], I ended up insultingevery queen that ever lived.Butyoudidn’t have to be a rocket . scientist to know / that marriage wasn’t 'goingtolast.Idon’t thinkI’mthepsychicfolksinger.”
Sheisatrendspotter, though, and hersubjectsintheinterveningde¬ cades have felt the gentle skewering, from “sensitive New Age guys,” for whom all is warm and fuzzy until the woman’srighttopleasureisintro¬ duced, to Martha Stewart's and Winona Ryder’s recent woes. Part satirist, parttroubadour,Lavinhas wieldedherbreathytrebleandskillful acoustic guitar work in 27 albums and
nearly nonstop touring.
When she perforins for UA Arts on February 20, the confirmed New Yorkerwillbereturningtoan audience she loves. One of her earliesttourssetthetone.“New Englanddrawsathoughtful, intelligent crowd.Notthattherearen’tinother parts of the country, but there seems tobealargeconcentrationthere,” Lavin says.
Now 50, Lavin has outgrown the thirtysomething-and-sometimesdesperate single girl persona she mined so successfully in albums like “Future Fossils” and “Beau Woes.” Though those characters will, she promises, make “special guest appearances” in her current concerts, she can also dig through her trunk andrevisitoldfriendsandaudience favorites who never age.
Some have even achieved status beyond the performing arena.
“One of my songs, ‘The Amoeba Hop,’iscomingoutasachildren’s booknextyear. It’sundertheumbrella oftheInternationalProtozoalogical Society,”Lavinnotesproudly.
“AndIalsogote-maillastweekfrom David H. Levy - he’s the co¬ discoverer of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 Comet - and he just heard my song 'PlanetX,’whichIrecordedin1997 and which is about Pluto’s planetary status.Hejustabsolutelywentwildfor

“There are a lot of songs that I’ve writtenthatarestillfindingtheir way," she adds. “That’s a difference between the singer-songwriter world and the pop world. Some of them take a long time to get out there, but once they’re there, they’rethereforever.”
Though deejays and record store owners may debate where to pigeonhole Lavin along the spectrum of composer-performers, the artist herselfthinksshe’sheardthe definitivedescription.
