Thisdiscoverywas made by two students who hadbecomeinterestedin mineralogy,andwhospent muchoftheirleisuretime searchingforminerals among the exposed ledges andmountainsaroundthe villageofParis.Maine. Lateintheautumnof 1820.andononeofits clear,calmdays,Elijah HamlinandEzekiel Holmesstartedoutto exploretherangeofhills whichformedtheeastern boundary'ofthetownof Paris,andwhichstretch awaytothenorthwest.

They had spent most of the day on Mount Mica.

joyand wonder theyheld them up to theraysof thesunlight, and admired theirvarious shadesof green,red. white,andyellow indifferentshades.They had.indeed,stumbled upononeoftherichest andrarestofnature's laboratories.Newsof thediscoveryspread tothevillagersand many of them hastened to thespotandsecuredanumber offinespecimensastrophiesor mementoes,yettheexactnatureofthediscoverywasstill crystalsofremarkable^} beautyandtransparency rewarded^ thelaborsofthe^i" students,and^iK* withmingled feelingsof,^r

unknown,eventotheoriginaldiscoverers.Afewspecimenswere partofthemountainridgetothesouthofthevillage,andwere descendingthewesterndeclivityontheirwayhome,justasthe sunwassettingbehindthegreatWhiteMountainrange,fifty miles or more away on the western horizon. Young Hamlin hesitatedforamomentonthecrestofahilltoenjoythe entrancingscenewhichspreadbeforehim.andonturningtothe eastforonefinallookatthewoodsandmountainsbehindhim. avividgleamofgreenflashedfromanobjectontherootsofa treeupturnedbythewind,andcaughthiseye.

Advancingtothespot,hefoundatransparentgreencrystal lyinglooseupontheearthwhichstillclungtotherootofthe fallentree.Thestudentclutchedtheglisteninggemwitheager¬ ness.andcalledbacktohiscompanion,whohadalreadypassed oxerthebrowofthehill,andwassomedistancedownthe

slope.Afterexaminingthenewlyfoundtreasure,thestudents carefullysearchedamongthesurroundingsoilforotherspecimens; buttherapidlyincreasingtwilightsooncompelledtheyouthful mineralogisttoabandonthesearch.They,however,resolvedto returnearlythenextmorningandcontinuetheexploration,but duringthenightastormarose,andcoveredthehillandits adjacentfieldswithathickmantleofsnowwhichremaineduntil thenextspring.

Assoonasthewinter'ssnowhasmeltedaway,andleftthe hillanditssidesexposedtoview,thestudentsagainreturnedto thesearch,andthistimewithsuccess.Theywentdirectlytothe bareledgewhichcropsoutonthebrowofthehill,andwhich

Departingfromthesecozyenvirons eachmorning,hepainted The Haunted House,"anoldboarded-upboardinghouse neartheshipyard,"asHopperputit.Itwas thegrey,weather-beatenAtlanticHouse, longsincedemolished,at5SouthStreet.

Thissubject,saysLevi,showsHopper "favoringimagesevocativeofbygone epochsandlostvalues,whichservesasa metaphorfortherolethatthepastcameto playinthepresent."TheHauntedHouseis oneoffivewatercolorsintheshowthat areintheFarnsworth'scollection.

AlthoughhecomplainedthatRockland didnothave"muchshipping,"Hopper wasinevitablydrawntothewaterfront. HisRocklandHarbor,Maine,loanedbythe Wadsworth Atheneum Museum, captures aviewnotmuchalteredtoday.

Herecordedthesharpanglesandjum¬ bledcontentsoflocalschoonersamid modembeamtrawlerswithconsiderable attentiontodetail. Schooner'sBowsprit looksdownonaportionofaderelictship. Schooner'sHull, recently given to the FarnsworthbytheLieberfamily,appears tohavebeenpaintedfromthedeckofa boat.Init,Hopperframedanabandoned schoonerwiththebacksofbuildingson MainStreet.

Interestingly,afewyearslaterayoung AndrewWyeth,unawareoftheearlier image,paintedthesamescenefromabout thesamevantagepoint.Wyethwasan admirerofHopper'sworkandviceversa.

IndepictingRockland'strawlersof 1926,whichhedescribedas"lumpyfish¬ ingboatsequippedwithgiganticnetsfor groundfishing,"Hopperemphasizedthe solidityoftheirstructureandtheplethora oflarge,well-wornequipment.Allthis suggestedthehardynatureofthefisher¬ men who manned them.

[T]hepaintingsofbeamtrawlers," saysMcAvoy;"are'surrogates'forthe livesofthefishermenwholivedand "’orkedonthevessels."

Workingfromdifferentangles,Hopper e'onturnedaprosaicLimeRockrailroad crossing,littlechangedtoday,intoseveral watercolors.

Duringhis1929visit,Hoppertooka particularinterestinsubjectsassociated with Cape Elizabeth Coast Guardsmen andtheirfamilies.Headmiredthemenfor theirdedicationtooftendangerouswork. HepaintedtheCoastGuardstation,their boats,andTheHouseoftheFogHorn.

Inawatercolor,LighthouseVillage, he recorded the nearby houses in which CoastGuardfamilieslivedjustbelowthe light.Ashiswifewroteafriend,"Themen havetosleepatthestation...butthesemen havetheirfamiliesrightthereatastone's throw.Lifeveryprimitive,waterfromthe villagepump."

Hopper'smostfamousoilthatsummer wasTheLighthouseatTwoLights, owned by theMetropolitanMuseumofArt.Itwas replicatedforaU.S.postagestampin1970.

OnasidetriptoPemaquidPoint,he paintedacloseupviewofthelighthouse, PemaquidLight,unusualforthepresenceof smallfiguresnexttothestructure.The handsomeworkisaprizedpossessionof thePortlandMuseumofArt.

HopperdiedinhisWashingtonSquare apartmentin1967,twomonthsshortofhis 85thbirthday.Hisobituarymadethefront pageofTheNewYorkTimes, and he was hailedinnewspapersandmagazinesacross thecountry.Said Life:"Hopperdistilled, moremasterfullythananyotherartistofhis time, a haunting look and mood of America."Hewasburiedinthefamilyplot inNyack,overlookingtheHudsonRiver, "’herehehadsailedasaboy.

IconicurbanworkssuchasNighthawks continuetoberecycledineverythingfrom cartoonstoadvertisements.Today,itseems most people know a Hopper when they seeone.

Itwasasim¬ plecottage builtbymy grandfather amongthe dunesona whitesandbeach hereinMaine.Ithadalarge stonefireplacetokeepthechillawayduring summerstorms.Ithadseasonalrunning waterandelectricitywhichcameonasingle wirestrungonwoodenpoles.Whenthe windblew,thewireswhistledmaking ghostlyseamusicongraywindydays.My grandfatherbroughtinmanyloadsofrich browntopsoilandmygrandmotherplanted flowers,thousandsofflowersinanamazing profusionofcolorwhichshetendeddaily. Theyardwassurroundedbyawhitepicket fence.Onthreesidesdunegrasscameupto theedgeofthefence.Inthefrontthe AtlanticOceansweptinonasmoothflat beach.Eachspringshereplacedherannu¬ als.Everysummerthesearosescametolife inwhiteandpinknestledamonggreen leaveswhichgrewalongtheoutsideofthe fence.Theyweretenacioushappyflowers thatlovedthesandysoils,wantingmore thananythingelsetobeallowedtocome insidethefencebutwereconvincedtwicea weekbyapush-reellawnmower tostayontheirside.

In memory of my grandmother’sgardens andherlifeamongthe flowerswecreatedthe SeaRoseRing.She wouldhavelovedthis ring.

ThedetailofSeaRoseRing iscarvedindeeprelief.Thereisonelarge RosaRugosa(searose)infullbloomand fivedelicatebudspartiallyopenoneach side.Theringismadetohavethelowest possibleprofile,wherethearcoftheshoul¬ dersoftheringcontinuesinanalmost unbrokenlineintothecurvatureofthelow profilebufftopgem.WemadeourSeaRose Ringwithstonesintwoshadesofgreen, ultramarineblue,burntumber,andblack. Eachgemisaspeciallycutdouble-sided cabochonsetsolowwithinitssettingthe fingeractuallytouchesthepolishedunder¬ sideofthegem.Anicefeature whichcreatesabondofintimacy betweenthewearerandgem.

PassingthroughthegapbetweenLittleDia¬ mondandGreatDiamondIsland,lookto yourright.Thereitis,glassyandclassy, sparklingonthenortherntipoftheisland-a singulardesignbyWillWinkelmanof WTittcnArchitectsinPortland.Thebold, curvingroofandbrightprimarycolors combinetomakethishouseawelcomecon¬ trasttotireubiquitousshingledandgabled housessurroundingit.

ThefirsttimeIsawthishouse,1wasona friend'sboat.RightawayIthoughtitwas innovative,different.ButthenIsawthe intriguingphotographsoftheinteriorlast fallandwasinahurrytogetinside.Icalled Winkelmanandheardaveryinteresting descriptionofhisdesignprocess;itprovid¬ edacandidglimpseintothewaygood designarchitectsthink.

I asked Winkelman where he came up withtheideaforthegreatroom,thinking perhapshe'dseensomethinglikeitinhis travels."Itgrewoutofsimplytryingto solvetherequirementsoftheprogramand site,"hesays."Theclientswantedfloor-toceilingglassonthenorthsideofthehouse facingtheview;Iwantedtobringwarm southlightintothelivingroom.Tomake bothofthesethingshappen,Imovedthe second-floorspacestothesides,solight couldbebroughtintothemainlivingspace fromabove.

"Theclientwantedthelivingroomto facedirectlytowardthebestwaterview, whichwasatanangletothepropertylines. Formypart,Iwantedthefrontofthehouse torelatetotheedgesofthestreetandneigh¬ boringhouses."

Theresultingdesignhastworectangular buildingsalignedwiththestreetandthe livingroomatananglebetweenthem,fac¬ ingdirectlytowardthewaterview.The clientdreamedofsomething"contempo¬

rary,"whereasWinkelmanwantedsome¬ thingcontemporarybutrespectfulofitscon¬ text.Theresultblendsthetwo,with traditional"shingleStyle"bookendsframing the very modem glass living space in between.

"How did you ever come up with the ideaforthecurvedroofandwoodtrusses, sointegraltothefeelingoftheinterior space?"IaskedWinkelman.

"The space simply grew out of my attemptstosolvethings,"hesays."Oneof the'bookends'istaller,withasecondfloor, sothelivingspaceneedstobehigheron onesidetoconnecttheinteriorspaces.1 sketchedthreedifferentideasfortheclient andtheylikedtheonewiththecurvedceil¬ ing.Itjustworked,"Winkelmansays.

Butwithatightbudgetandnomoney forcurvedbeams,thetypicalwaytocreate acurvedroof,"Ihadtofindasimplewayto makethecurvedspace."Workingclosely with structural engineer Paul Becker, Winkelmancameupwithawayofmaking

Performanceswereatleastpartofthe activitiesheldinthebuildinguntiltheYMCA becameamajortenantofthedownstairsspace formostofthemid-20thcentury.WhentheV leftinthe1970safterthebuildingwassold,the structureseemedtomoveevenfartherfromits originalpurpose:amini-mallofindividual retailshops,arecyclingcenter,anantiques shop,andarestaurant.

"Enough!"saidagroupofarearesi¬ dents,includingsomewhosawtheOpera Houseinvariousstatesofmisguideduse ordisrepairovertheirlifetimes.They formed The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor,anstarklydescriptivemonikerthat leftnodoubtastothebuilding'spresent andfutureuse.Withinitsfirstfewweeks, through a board member's connections, JacksonBrownebecametheOperaHouse's firstliveact,drawing600patronsinfolding chairstoavenuethatstillborethemulticol¬ oredhuesofabandonedfleamarketstalls.

InMarch2004,thenonprofitorganiza¬ tion hired executive director Stephen Coppicktotakeovertheprocess.Coppick,

aveteranoftheBostonartsscene,immed atelysettoworkontheOperaHouse inauguralsummerseason,reasoningthat: wasmoreimportanttobringtheartsalii nowthantospendtimeandresourceso: decor.Sothebuildingitselfisawork: progress,itsheartandspiritonthemove.
