Inhisownmindandinthemindsof fellowleft-wingrevolutionariesof 1960svintage,hewasn’tacriminalat all:HeandtheUnitedFreedomFront (orArmedClandestineMovementor SamMelville-JonathanJacksonUnit), ofwhichhewasaleader,w’erejustvery vigorousprotestersagainstcorporate greed,racism,andAmericanimper¬ ialismandmilitarism.

LevasseurcamefromaFrenchCanadianmill-workingfamilyin Sanford.Hefollowedafamiliar trajectoryforworking-classkidsofthe time.Afterhighschoolandworkinthe millandonthedocksinBoston,the armyshippedhimofftoVietnam.The warradicalizedhim,andhewasrad¬ icalizedmorewhen,afterdischarge,he gotsenttoprisoninTennesseefor selling$7worthofmarijuanatoan undercovercopwhileworkingon union,civil-rights,andanti-warcauses.

Afterhegotout,hetaughtkarateto kidsinBaysideandKennedyPark, counseledagainstdrugabuse,studied atwhatbecametheUniversityof J SouthernMaine,andthreweggsat VicePresidentSpiroAgnewduringthe Republicanstateconventionin1972. In1973,hehelpedorganizeaprison¬ ers’supportgroup.SCAR,theState¬ wideCorrectional/MlianceforReform.

Levasseurclaimshewasdriven undergroundwhenhewastoldhis nameappearedonaPortlandpolice “deathsquad”list.Buthealsohas written:“Iwantedtomakethissystem bleed.”Heattemptedtobuilda“revol¬ utionaryresistancemovement.” Withasmallgroup,heembarkedona nearlylO-yearcareerof“independentfund raising”(Levasseur’sownwords)from bankstofinancenumerousbombings throughouttheNortheast.’Hierevol¬ utionariesfirstattackedCentralMaine Power’scoqjoratcheadquartersinAug¬ ustain1976,accordingtothepolice.He landedontheFBI’s10-most-wantedlist. Twocomradeswereconvictedofkilling aNewJerseystatetrooper,butnoharmto humanswaseverpreciselypinnedon

Afteraslip-upbyanassociate,thepolice nabbedhimin1984alongwithothersof hiscell.Hewassentencedto45yearsfor ascriesofNew’York-areabombings. Later,federalprosecutorsinMassachu¬ settstriedtoconvicthimandseveral othersof“sedition”(attemptingtoover¬ throw'thegovernmentbyforce)and “racketeering.”Forhim,thiscontrover¬ sial,lengthycaseendedinanacquittalon seditionandamistrialonracketeering. Thetrialwascontroversialbecausethe governmentspenttensofmillionsof dollarstryingtoputpeoplebehindbars thattheyalreadyhadbeensentencedto spenddecadesbehind.
