Itwasgreattoreadaboutthesuccessof PatrickDempseyintheMaycoverstory. However, I was disappointed that the articledidn'tmentionMr.Dempseyspent a summer at The Theater At Monmouth, theShakespeareanTheaterofMaine.In 1983,hewasanactinginternwiththe theaterandappearedin CyranodeBergerac and Hamlet.

Interestingly,anothersuccessfulalumof a TAM Hamlet productionisinthenews now.DavidHarbour,whoplayedthetitle role in the 1997 production here, was nominatedforaTonyawardthisyearfor Who'sAfraidofVirginiaWoolf? When QueenMary 2steamsinto PortlandonOctober5,thou¬ sandsofspectatorswillcatcha fleetingglimpseofthelargest passengershipeverconstructed.Butmore importantly,it'sachancetoseeourselvesas othersseeus.Likethe QueenElizabeth2 beforeher, QM2 isamirrorofhowMaine beckonstotheworld.

Thatmirrorwasfirstsilveredin1981, when QE2 madehermaidenstopinBar Harbor,skippingtheForestCityaftera briefsojourninBostonfeaturingtoursof homesonBeaconHill.

Whichgivesrisetothequestion:Whyhas tinvBarHarborearnedequal,ifnotsuperior, billingtoPortlandinluringCunardLinersand theirtradeacrosstheseas?

FromtheBritishperspective,BarHarbor stillhastireperfumeofforgottenromancethat probablydatesbacktotireRockefellersliving here.Ontiresilverscreen,'summeringinBar Harbor'isstockdialogue,liremystiquecon¬ tinuesunabated,inspiteofPortlandeternally

appearingatthetopof'livability'listsin nationalmagazines.

ButonceBarHarborgottirefirstcall,local boostersthereimprovedupontheirgoodfor¬ tune.Itwasmypriralegetohavebeenpartof thisadventure.

The special newspaper we published talkedaboutChamplainin1604,thesexlife ofalobster,blueberrydaiquiris-alltireobvi¬ ous.Tireowneroftire BarHarborTimes, Emily Saltonstall,drovethepaperstoHalifaxand deliveredthemtotheportagent.Knowing thechaosofloadingsuppliesforashipthus size,Istressedthatsheshouldfindsomeone whoknewhisorherwayaroundtheship and explain what was happening. She walkedontothepier.Anofficerwithbraid wascheckingthedockinglines.Shetoldhim itwasveryimportantthatthepaperswere slippedunderallthestateroomdoorsthat night,anddeliveredtothecrewaswell.

AsSaltonstallbeganherdrivebackto Maineand QE2 leftport,wordcameuptothe bridgefromthechef,"Fish&chipstonight1 WehaveallthesenewspaperssoIthough we'dofferfishandchipsintheirtraditional cornucopiaofnewsprint."Byafortuitous

coincidence,tineofficerofthewatchwasthe sameonewhohadbeencheckingthelines. Disasterwasaverted,alongwithafutureben¬ efit:tineofficerwasRonWarwick,nowCom¬ modoreandMasterofQueenMary2.

Withagooddealofsatisfaction,we watchedpassengersstreamingofftheshiptine nextmorningclutchingtheirBarHarborTinies.

Buttherewasmore.LocalsofScottish descentformedalargebagpipeanddrum coipswhichparadedalongthewaterfront,fill¬ ingthetownwiththathauntingsoundthat cutstheairandbubblestheblood.Crowds swelledandtrafficgroundtoahalt.

ThemouseofBarHarborroaredlouder: Thepostofficesetupatemporarybranch onthepier,withaone-timepostmarkcele¬ bratingtheship'spresence,frankingpost¬ cardswitha"firstdaycover."Itwasdoing briskbusiness.

Thenetresultofallthiscommotionwas suchextraordinarypassengersatisfactionthat theshipliasroutinelyvisitedeversince,asdid QM2lastsummer.

Itwasmypleasuretobeinvitedrecently onatransatlanticcrossingaboardQAC Fromthesoundofherdeepdepartureblast (thewhistlecanbeheard10milesatsea,anc itsreverberationssetoffcaralarmsnearher pier),untilherdockingsixdayslater,then wasnaughtbutthesplendoroftheocean Sweptupbyitall,Icouldn'thelpbutfeelthiisnotacruise,thisisabrightpassagi betweenlife'sindifferentcontinents.Andir takingit,Iwasnotalone.

OfftheEnglishcoastwecrossedtherouteof thatcuriousGreekfellow,Pytheas,whointhe thirdcentury'B.C.rowedoutoftheMed¬ iterraneanandaroundBritain.

BenjaminFranklinsailedbetweenAmer¬ icaandEnglandmany'times.Curiousasto whysomevesselstooklesstime,evenwith consistentweather,hechartedthecourseof thefasteronesandrealizedthey'hadbeen inagreatcurrentwhichhechristenedthe "gulfstream."

Thisdisorganizedoffensivereversed intoaroutwhenasquadronofBritishrein¬ forcementsarrived,bottlingourfleetin. Whileourvesselsgreatlyoutnumberedthe British,theynowfacedatrueheavyhitter, the64-gunbattleship Raisoimable, along withtwofrigates,eachofwhichcouldblow the Warren tosmithereens.Afterashorten¬ gagementinwhichthe Raisounable’s pow¬ erful24-poundersforcedthesurrenderof twoAmericanvessels,thecolonistssailed deeperintoPenobscotBay.Facingaslack windontire15thand16thofAugust,theyran theirshipsagroundandsetthemablaze.

Itwasthemostsignificantnavallossof theRevolution.Financially,thecostofthe disastereclipsed$8.5million,adebtthat bankruptedMassachusettsandfedthefi¬ nancialcrisisleadingtoShay'sRebellion.

Buttheypaidasmuchwiththeirrepu¬ tationsaswithcurrency.Havingcourt-mar¬ tialed Commodore Saltonstall for "In¬ capacity,Irresolution,andTimidity,"the

Massachusettscourtonlyreluctantlyac¬ quittedPaulRevereofsimilarcharges.

Today,thehullsarevanishingrelicsdue tolooters,ice,livingorganisms,andthe "screamingcurrents,"saysmarinearchae¬ ologistJamesHunteroftheNavalHis¬ toricalCenterinWashington,D.C.,whohas divedonthewreckstotakeapeekatwhat timehaslefttous(seephotos).
