Thatmirrorwasfirstsilveredin1981, when QE2 madehermaidenstopinBar Harbor,skippingtheForestCityaftera briefsojourninBostonfeaturingtoursof homesonBeaconHill.
Whichgivesrisetothequestion:Whyhas tinvBarHarborearnedequal,ifnotsuperior, billingtoPortlandinluringCunardLinersand theirtradeacrosstheseas?

She walkedontothepier.Anofficerwithbraid wascheckingthedockinglines.Shetoldhim itwasveryimportantthatthepaperswere slippedunderallthestateroomdoorsthat night,anddeliveredtothecrewaswell.

Withagooddealofsatisfaction,we watchedpassengersstreamingofftheshiptine nextmorningclutchingtheirBarHarborTinies.
Buttherewasmore.LocalsofScottish descentformedalargebagpipeanddrum coipswhichparadedalongthewaterfront,fill¬ ingthetownwiththathauntingsoundthat cutstheairandbubblestheblood.Crowds swelledandtrafficgroundtoahalt.
ThemouseofBarHarborroaredlouder: Thepostofficesetupatemporarybranch onthepier,withaone-timepostmarkcele¬ bratingtheship'spresence,frankingpost¬ cardswitha"firstdaycover."Itwasdoing briskbusiness.
Thenetresultofallthiscommotionwas suchextraordinarypassengersatisfactionthat theshipliasroutinelyvisitedeversince,asdid QM2lastsummer.

Whileourvesselsgreatlyoutnumberedthe British,theynowfacedatrueheavyhitter, the64-gunbattleship Raisoimable, along withtwofrigates,eachofwhichcouldblow the Warren tosmithereens.Afterashorten¬ gagementinwhichthe Raisounable’s pow¬ erful24-poundersforcedthesurrenderof twoAmericanvessels,thecolonistssailed deeperintoPenobscotBay.Facingaslack windontire15thand16thofAugust,theyran theirshipsagroundandsetthemablaze.
Itwasthemostsignificantnavallossof theRevolution.Financially,thecostofthe disastereclipsed$8.5million,adebtthat bankruptedMassachusettsandfedthefi¬ nancialcrisisleadingtoShay'sRebellion.
