Manyfriendsandfamilycouldtellsto¬ riesthatgobacktothe1930sabout[this particularaddress).Thisismy'personal takeonwhyourplacehasheart.
Thesummercottagethatourhouse replacedwasan11-bedroommansionthat belongedtomy'grandparents.Duringthe 1930sand1940s,theirsixchildrenandscads ofgrandchildrengatheredtogetherinthe summersforelegantfamilyoccasions.
Therewereteapartiesontherambling porch,sumptuousSundaydinners,andcro¬ quetonthefrontlawn.EachFourthofJuly' wehadapanoply'offireworks,including skyrocketsthatweresetoffby'ouruncles.
Timesandcircumstanceshavechanged, buttoday'my'generationstillhasfond memoriesoftheirsummersatThornhurst. Itisnowonderthebighousewassorelv missedwhenitwastorndownin1952and replacedby'amodestglasshome.
Many'yearslater,IwasabroadinAfrica withBarbara,my'secondwife.My'brother, Herb,wassailingthePacificOceanand writingbookswithhissecondwife,Nancy'. Duringthoseyears,ourmother,Eileen Payson,openedherhouseandherheart toourchildren.Thehousebecamearef¬ ugefullofloveforthem.Asthekidsgrew fromchildhoodtoadulthoodthey'formed astrongbondwiththeirgrandmotherand herhouse.
Thisbondwithgrandmotherandplace influencedmy'andmy'brother'schildren tochoosetoliveinMaine.Theashesof hisfirst-borndaughterarescatteredhere underabeechtreeplantedinhermemory'.
My'childrenhavenowproducedsix kidsoftheirown;anotherisexpectedsoon. Theyarethesixthgenerationtobehere.

Heneverforgotthatactofgenerosity orthekindnessofpeoplehemethere.This spiritdrewhimbackin1978,whenherent¬ edacabininRangeleyforthesummerwith anartistfriend.Hesubsequentlybought theadjacentlodge,nowoneofhissummer homes.Heoffersanimpromptutour,and thestoriescomeout.

Heusedittocreatefangdenturesthatwould makethedoglookmoreviciousasthewolf inWegman'sdrollversionofLittleRed RidingHood.OneofWegman'sfirstbooks,it wassetintireMainewoods.Costumeddogs playedalltheroles.

Wegman has finished the lour and returnstohiskitchen,wherehesitsona
deco-ish,yellownaugahydechair,looking outonthelakeandtalkingabouthislife. He'saslim,wiryguywithcurlygray-brown hair,rimlessglasses,andarelaxed,gracious, unassumingmanner.There'sagentlenessto him,whichhesaysbeinginMaineaccentu¬ ates,butheconveysafeelingthathecould fitinanywhere.
Tomanypeople,Rangeleystillseemslike afrontiertown.ButtoWegmanit's"more aboutfamilythanwilderness,"hesays.Wife Christine,aNewYorkartdealer,sometimes getsboredhere,buthischildrenlovetofrolic aroundthelake.Hisfathersummershappily inacabinnearby,andsisterPamhasahome here,too.

Thiswasoneofthosephotographsthatjust happened,anditturnedoutbetterthan Wegmanplanned.

OnesuchshipwastheNottinghamGalley, "wreckedinDecemberof1710onitswayto PortlandfromIreland.
"YorkBeachwassoclose,butarescueraft wastakenoverbywavesandthosemenfroze.
"Thirty-fiveothersscrambledontothe island,whichhadnovegetationandwashit bygalescapableofsending500-poundboul¬ derscrashingintotherockandsea.Themen ateseaweedbutreactedviolently.Theygot sick,begantodie,"Zwickersays.
"Thefirsttoperishwasthecook,"she says,burnishingthechestnutmadefamous byKennethRoberts's1956novelBoonIsland.
"Thecaptainhadtomakeadecision.These weregod-fearingmenbuttheywerestarv¬ ing.Theyresortedtocannibalism[think Alive!meetsThePerfectStorm], consuming thecookfirst,thenthecarpenter.Theywere rescuedbyfishermen29dayslater,butthe shipwreckedmenwereneverthesame.
"Soyouseetheneedforalighthouseon thatrock.Butthefirsttwolighthousesbuilt thereweredestroyedinstorms,andthe third,builtaround1820,hasitsownstory,"
Zwickersays.
"Inthe1850s,therewasalighthouse keeperchargedwithkeepingthelightburn¬ ing.Hewasresponsibleforthesafetyofall theships.Duringaviolentstorm,thekeep¬ erlefthiswifetotieuphisboat-theironly meansofescape.
"Shedidn'tknowit,butthekeeper slippedinthestormandbashedhishead againstarock.Inhisabsencesheclimbedthe stepstokeepthelight,returningonlytofind himdead.Fishermenfoundthekeeper'swife nearlyfrozen,clutchingherhusband'scold, deadhand.Shediedsoonthereafter,anditis saidthatsomethingbeyondthemillionsof gullsscreechingouttherenowhauntsBoon IslandLight,"Zwickersays.
Ghostsofthedamned,sailors-tumed-can¬ nibals?Theill-fatedkeeperorhisloyalwife? Zwickeris"opentothepossibilities,"shesays, buttlierealghostmaybetheBixinIslandrelic itself."Thelighthouseissuchanimposing presence,it'ssohaunting."Andyet,Zwicker laments,"it'spracticallyobsolete.
"Thetimeofthelighthousekeeperhas passed.Thesystemsarenowautomated;the lightsnolongerrequirethesamecare.The humanelementhasbeenlost,removed," Zwickersays.
"Technically,wedon'treallyneedthese lighthousesanymore."
Yetthelighthouseremainsamysticiconof ourstate."Peoplearedrawntodiembecause they'reessentialtothefoundationofMaine, andtothatofiNewEngland,"shesays."The storieswetellarealensintothathistory."■

In1959,JamesLittlejohn,Jr.,65atthe time,andhisson,Bill,then37,rananursery' stockbusinessontheirfarminScarborough. ForasecondIthoughtitwasGiselle'scat, becauseBambinolikedtosleeponmylegs, butwhen1shuffledmyfeetunderthesheets theweightnearlyrolledoffthebed.Itwas apillow.1should'veknownrightawayit washersflungoveronme,becauseshe'sa knownfidgeter.Herheadwasshovedunder heroneremainingpillow,withonlytheends ofherravencurlsstickingout.
Everythingelseinthebedroomiswhite, exceptfortheoldredNomarjerseyIdropped onthefloor.Gisellehadevenpaintedthose old,unevenfloorboardsachalk}'white.You knowwhatshecallscolor?Thosepalegreen andpurpleshardsofbeachglassonthe bureau.HergrandmaupinBrunswickhad anall-whiteroomthatGisellestayedinsum¬ mersasakid.Theoldladygaveherthefancy' metalassieorwhateverthehellshecallsit,

Don'tgetmewrong.IlikedBambino,even ifhedidsleeponmy'legsandroutinely'shred my'clothes.Afewdaysbeforetheendofhis ninthlife,hepouncedonmy'nakedback rightwhenGiselleandmeweregettinginto it.Catclawswilltakethehumprightoutof you.IhowledandsodidtheBambino.Giselle grabbedhimoffmeandalmostchokedlaugh¬ ing.Shedidn'tcarethat1hadbloodrunning downmylats.Shejustturnedawaywithhim andgiggledintothatdemon'sbone-blackfur.

Giselle,shedidn'tsayanythingaboutthe dishwhenshegothome.She'dhadalong day,makingappointmentsforruginstal¬ lationsandtypinginvoicesatCheatwood FlooringandMore.Butboy,sheyelledatme becauseIforgottotakeoutthehamburger tothawlikesheasked.When1triedtopryit outoftheiceinthefreezer,abagofchicken wingsflewoutandclockedmeonthecheek. Rightaway1couldfeelalumpstartup. Gisellesnortedoutalaugh.
Enoughwiththelaughing.Ialmosttold her.Isaid,"IknowhowBambino..."Then thebuzzerrangabilliontimes.Iwasabout tosayhowBambinowasatrooper.After pouringtheanti-freezeintothe"BadKitty"
waterbowl,Iworrieditwouldleaveagreen stainonthewhiteceramic.Luckilyhelicked thatbowlcleanbeforeIshooedhimoutside tomeethisfate.Inevergotachancetofinish thesentence,though,becauseherfriend,Jeri, stormedin.Shewantedreinforcementsto browbeatsomepoorgoon.I'mgladInever toldGiselle.Sometimesinterruptionsmake youappearsmarterthanyouare.
