Manyfriendsandfamilycouldtellsto¬ riesthatgobacktothe1930sabout[this particularaddress).Thisismy'personal takeonwhyourplacehasheart.

Thesummercottagethatourhouse replacedwasan11-bedroommansionthat belongedtomy'grandparents.Duringthe 1930sand1940s,theirsixchildrenandscads ofgrandchildrengatheredtogetherinthe summersforelegantfamilyoccasions.

Therewereteapartiesontherambling porch,sumptuousSundaydinners,andcro¬ quetonthefrontlawn.EachFourthofJuly' wehadapanoply'offireworks,including skyrocketsthatweresetoffby'ouruncles.

Timesandcircumstanceshavechanged, buttoday'my'generationstillhasfond memoriesoftheirsummersatThornhurst. Itisnowonderthebighousewassorelv missedwhenitwastorndownin1952and replacedby'amodestglasshome.

Many'yearslater,IwasabroadinAfrica withBarbara,my'secondwife.My'brother, Herb,wassailingthePacificOceanand writingbookswithhissecondwife,Nancy'. Duringthoseyears,ourmother,Eileen Payson,openedherhouseandherheart toourchildren.Thehousebecamearef¬ ugefullofloveforthem.Asthekidsgrew fromchildhoodtoadulthoodthey'formed astrongbondwiththeirgrandmotherand herhouse.

Thisbondwithgrandmotherandplace influencedmy'andmy'brother'schildren tochoosetoliveinMaine.Theashesof hisfirst-borndaughterarescatteredhere underabeechtreeplantedinhermemory'.

My'childrenhavenowproducedsix kidsoftheirown;anotherisexpectedsoon. Theyarethesixthgenerationtobehere.

HefirstcametoRangeleywithafewbud¬ diesin1956,ateenagerlookingforagood placetofish.Thentheircarbrokedown. That'swhenBudRussell,whoownedsome sportingcamps,tookthemunderhiswing. Hewasacompletestranger,but"heputus upforaweek,evenfixedourcar,"Wegman says."Itwasbeautiful."

Heneverforgotthatactofgenerosity orthekindnessofpeoplehemethere.This spiritdrewhimbackin1978,whenherent¬ edacabininRangeleyforthesummerwith anartistfriend.Hesubsequentlybought theadjacentlodge,nowoneofhissummer homes.Heoffersanimpromptutour,and thestoriescomeout.

Thecasual,rusticlodge,builtin1889,was theheartofoneoftheoriginalMainecamps, hesays.Familieswouldrentoneofabout15

AlthoughWegmanandhisfamilysleep upstairs,theirhomestillfunctionslikean open,inviting,semi-publicspace.Friends comeandgowithoutknocking,anddoors areheldslightlyajarwithbricksorsticksso thedogscannosetheirwayinorout.

Inwhatoncewasareceptionarea,still linedwithanimalmounts,mementosfrom someofWegman'sfavoriteprojectssit inglasscases.There'sacastofChundo's mouth,forinstance,madebyadentistfriend. Heusedittocreatefangdenturesthatwould makethedoglookmoreviciousasthewolf inWegman'sdrollversionofLittleRed RidingHood.OneofWegman'sfirstbooks,it wassetintireMainewoods.Costumeddogs playedalltheroles.

Itwasduringthemakingofthisfilm,shot largelyatthelodge,thatWegmansayshe learnedmanyofthetechniquesthatwould latercharacterizesomeofhismostfamous work-suchashowtomakethedogslook tallanderect,howtogivethemhandsand armgestures,howtomakecostumeddogs appeartomovewhilestanding.

Wegman has finished the lour and returnstohiskitchen,wherehesitsona

deco-ish,yellownaugahydechair,looking outonthelakeandtalkingabouthislife. He'saslim,wiryguywithcurlygray-brown hair,rimlessglasses,andarelaxed,gracious, unassumingmanner.There'sagentlenessto him,whichhesaysbeinginMaineaccentu¬ ates,butheconveysafeelingthathecould fitinanywhere.

Tomanypeople,Rangeleystillseemslike afrontiertown.ButtoWegmanit's"more aboutfamilythanwilderness,"hesays.Wife Christine,aNewYorkartdealer,sometimes getsboredhere,buthischildrenlovetofrolic aroundthelake.Hisfathersummershappily inacabinnearby,andsisterPamhasahome here,too.

Wegman was born in Holyoke, Mas¬ sachusetts,in1942,andraisednearbyin theLongmeadowarea,hesays.Theirswas "atolerant,well-read,happy,Ozzie-andHarrietkindoffamily."Hisfather,George, wasaproductionmanagerfortheliniment

makerAbsorbineJr;motherEleanor,now deceased,wasahomemakerwithapen¬ chantforart.

Asachild,drawingandpainting"was alwayswhatIwasgoodat.It'swhatIdid." AftergraduatingfromtheMassachusetts CollegeofArtin1965andthentheUniversity ofIllinoisatChampaign-Urbanain1967,he taughtartattheUniversityofWisconsinand then,in1970,atCaliforniaStateCollegeat LongBeach.

ManRaywasoldandailingwhenhe cametoRangeley,andWegmansayshe tooksomeofthemostpoignantshotsof himherefivemonthsbeforehedied.One is"Dusted,"aphotothatbeganasawhim¬ sicalstudyofMayRayasaraccoon,"with flourcreatingadetailonhisnose.ThenI shooktheflouroverhisheadanditlooked likeaspotlight,ashowerofluminosity." Thiswasoneofthosephotographsthatjust happened,anditturnedoutbetterthan Wegmanplanned.

AfterManRaydiedin1982,Wegman sworehe'dnevergetanotherdog.Buthe couldn'tresistFayRay,acinnamon-brown weimaranerwithround,yellow,jungle-cat eyesandafemininebutmuscularphysique. Shewasspookedbytheloudnoisesnear Wegman'sNewYorkstudio,butsheloved

Penny(so-calledbecauseshe'slinkedto Candy,hermother),age2,showsthemost promise,andWegmanthinkshecould produceabookabouther.Buthehasn't yetfiguredouthowtodothis.Meanwhile, he'sexperimentingwithtechniquesforani¬ matingstillphotosofdogsanddoingsome non-dogpaintingaswell.Atthetimeofthe interview,hewasmakingwatercolorimages incorporatingoldpostcards.

AfterFay,Battina,andChipdied, Wegmanhadthemcremated.Theirremains wereplacedinwhitemetalcanisters,slightly smallerthancoffeecans.Atfirstheintended toscattertheirashesonalakeinRangeley, butthensomehowhecouldn'tdothat.He gaveChip'sashestohissister,wholoved him,andkeptFayandBattinaintheircanis¬ tersontopofhisdresser.Nowtheygowith himfromNewYorktoMaineandback.

"Shedidn'tknowit,butthekeeper slippedinthestormandbashedhishead againstarock.Inhisabsencesheclimbedthe stepstokeepthelight,returningonlytofind himdead.Fishermenfoundthekeeper'swife nearlyfrozen,clutchingherhusband'scold, deadhand.Shediedsoonthereafter,anditis saidthatsomethingbeyondthemillionsof gullsscreechingouttherenowhauntsBoon IslandLight,"Zwickersays.
