I'vebeendoingalotofresearch.Luckily,the peoplewhohaveownedthishousehave passeditsstorythroughthegenerations. 1haveinmypossessionjustaboutevery articlewrittenaboutit,andthepeopleinit, datingtothe1880s.Ihavealotaboutthe configurationofthehouseinitsoriginalstate anddocumentsaboutwhat'shappenedover dielast300years.

Asfaraschangesareconcerned,I'm notgoingtotouchtheoriginalpartofthe house.Ageneralstorewasbuiltonan adjacentlotaround1830thattheylater attachedasawinginthe1920s,andan outdoorporchturnedintoanindoorporch aboutthesametime.Thosearethethings thatI'mgoingtoaddress.

So many people think of you as having this cool and contemporary side-is your love for early architecture a hidden part of you? It'sbeenthereallalong.Besides,1don'tlook atmyselfasaverycontemporaryperson. Ashecasthismindaboutforsomethingtodo,heremem¬ beredMr.Linwood.Lastyearatthistimehewasdatingc theoldman'sgrandniece,Katie.Onadaymuchlikethisthey haddriventinetwohoursupthecoasttoOwlsHead,where he'dmetMr.Linwood,amaninhiseighties,straight-backed andablefromalifeofhardwork.

Theytalkedforawhileatthatfirstmeeting,andMr. LinwoodsuggestedthatJesseandKatiegorowingintheboatthat he'dbuiltforKatie'smothermanyyearsagobuthadkeptingood shapebecauseitwasvery"sweet"torowandlongenoughfortwo rowingstations.Jessewaseagerbecausehe'dtaughtrowingseveral summersatanexclusiveboys'campincentralMaine.

Atthetime,JessewasverymuchinlovewithKatiebecauseshe wassmart,funny,andhadtheslimgoodlookshehadonceseenina famouspictureoftireyoungEdnaSt.VincentMillay.Katieevenhad herdarkauburnhair.Sheclaimedtobeafourthcousinofthefamous poet.This,ofcourse,wasoneofthereasonsJessewasinfatuatedhehadadegreeinEnglishfromLIMOwhichhadhelpedhimget hisjobattheadvertisingagency.Somedayheintendedtowrite poetry,andheknewKatiewouldbeagreatmuse.

Butthatwaslastsummer,andtimeshadchanged.Anewsecre¬ taryattheagencycameontohimusingallherassetsofbigbreasts andblondehairandhadbeddedhimtwicebeforehefoundthat someofhercharmswereillusionary.ButbythattimeKatieknewand dumpedhim.

Ashorttimelater,tineotherwomandumpedhimaswell.Whenhe madediscreetinquirieswithKatie'sfriendsaboutrenewingtheirrela¬ tionship,theyimmediatelytoldhimshehadanewboyfriendandwas

consideringmarryinghim.Jessecursedhimselfbutknewhe'dmadea very'badmistakeandwouldhavetosuffertheconsequences.

HisspiritsroseasheapproachedTrail'sEnd,appropriatelynamed becauseonecouldgonofurtheronland.Hehadfantasiesthathe'd meetKatiethereandeverytlringwouldworkout.Butwhenhepulled inthedriveway,Katie'syellowMustangwasnowhereinsight.Infact, nocarswerethere,notevenMr.Linwood'sBuick.Hecouldseeanote tapedtothedoor,andwhenhereadit,itsaid,inMr.Linwood'shand¬ writing,"Iwascalledaway,willbebackat8p.m."

Jessewalkeddowntotheshore.Therewastheboatinitsbeautiful greenandwhite,withOwlsHeadpaintedonthestern.Allhehadto dowasflipitover,placeitonthelittlegreasedwoodenrailway,and easilypushitdowntothewater.Theonlyhitchwasthelocationofthe oars.HeknewMr.Linwoodusuallykepttheminhisgarage.

Hesatontlicledge,thoughtaboutKatie andhowperfectthatdayhadbeen,andrue¬ fullyrealizedhemightneverhaveanother oneasgood,evenasyoungashewas.

But,muchtohisrelief,itwasaCoast Guard21-footRBSwithpowerfultwinout¬ boards.Theyfoundhimeasily,pulledhim aboard,wrappedhiminablanket,andgave himsomethingtodrink.Herecognizeditas rumandwaswngrateful.

ThentheCoastieswenttoMr.Linwood's boat,tiedthepainteron,andheadedto Trail'sEnd.Therehewas,startledtoseenot onlyMr.LinwoodbutKatieandtheyoung manheknewtobehernewboyfriend.

Afterhecameashore,Mr.Linwoodsaid, "You'remightychilled,youngman.Come inthehousetotoweloff;I'llwashanddry yourclothesandgiveyousomethingtoeat." Katiesaidnothing-justafewtearsrandown hercheeks.Sheandherboyfriendgotinthe Mustanganddroveoff.Mr.Linwoodfed himtwobowlsofchowderandsuggestedhe waitanhourbeforedrivingbacktoPortland, tellinghimhe'dhadabadshock.

Twoweekslater,hegotanenvelopeintine mailfromtineU.S.GovernmentDepartment ofHomelandSecurity.Itwasabillfor$400 fortinerescueoperation.
