TheMarieAntoinetteHouse,andits residents,havebeenapartofmylifesince Iwasachild,and1haveevenwovenparts ofthehouse'shistoryintomybooks.My firstbook(StoppingToHome,achildren's historical[novel]setinWiscasset)includes SallyClough,oneofStephenClough's daughters.AndShadowsontheCoastofMaine (oneofmyadultmysteries)includesthe historyofthehouseitself,butnottheMarie Antoinettelegend.

NatWilder'snovelARoyalTragedy(1910) purportedtotellthehistoricaltruth-but,in fact,isamadassemblageofhistoricalfacts andfictionspulledfromtheFrench&Indian WarsandtheWarof1812.(InWilder'sbook, theownersoftheshipareNathanielCloud,a farmer,andFrankSwan,arichinvestor,who isinlovewithCloud'sdaughter.)
In1919,the"letterfromCloughtohiswife askinghertoprepareherhomeforabroken¬ heartedwoman"surfacedintineMaineWrit¬ ersResearchClub'sbookonstoriesofMaine.
In1937,theMainevolumeoftheWPA's FederalWritersProjectincludesthefirst versionofthestorycreditingCloughwith introducingthecooncattoMaine.(In stilllaterversions,thecooncatissaidto havebeendescendedfromoneofMarie Antoinette'sPersians.)
Mostversionsofthestoryafterthat mixandmatchelements,until1989,when GhostsOntheCoastofMainewaspublished, suggestingthatthecaptain(thistimeArthur ClarkeofBoothbay)metthequeen,andwas possiblyherlover.TheshipwastheSarah, andthestoryalsoincludesdetailsprovided byHerbie,thegardenerattheMarie AntoinetteHouse,whohasoftenfeltthe ghostofMarieAntoinetteintherosegarden, whereshecametolookforherlover.(No, thereisneitheragardenernorarosegarden attheMarieAntoinetteHousenor,sofarasI know,havethereeverbeen.)
