Notthatthesub-prime-slimedealwasn'treal.It'sjustthatMainedoesn'thavetobepartofit anymore,nowthatwecanprintourownmoney,atleast.DoyouknowhowmanyU.S.dollars this$1billfromtheCityofPortlandisworth?TheoneoneBaysoldfor$123U.S.dollars. So,natch,weshouldprintmoreofthem.

Yousayourmoneyisn'tbackedbyagoldstandard?Whoseis?Weproudlybackitwithgood, cleanYankeeair,thekindyoucansinkyourteethintoonacrispDecembermorning.

Wehadeatensomuchthatweknewdinner wouldcertainlynotbenecessary,butnoneof uscouldresistdessert.Cappuccinos,alight andairysliceofpumpkincheesecakeanda warm,bittersweetchocolatemoltencakewith andhappenstancewillleadyoutosome hiddentreasureoftenoverlookedbythe masses.Thisisjusttheoccurrencemyfamily andIrecentlyexperiencedwhileoutfora Sunday drive along Route 88 in Yarmouth.Thishistoricstretchhuggingthe coastfromthesouthernedgeofFalmouthto justsouthofFreeportisthesameroutebuilt toservethekingincolonialtimes.Whileitis certainthatthepassingofafewcenturieshas changedthelandscape,wediscoveredaspot setattheedgeofthewaterinLowerFalls

itsjuicy,pinkcenter.Tomyright, mymotherwassavoringa simplyelegantdishof Mainelobster,spinach, tomatoesandlinguine tossed in scampi butter.Unlikewhat we'veoftenexperiencedin otherrestaurants,thisdishwasbrimming withfreshknuckleandclawmeatandtopped withabrightredtailsoeverybiteofthedish wassuretoincludeatasteofthesucculent crustacean.Tomyleft,mysisterwas enjoyingaBenedictOscar,generouslyheaped withfreshcrabmeatandtenderasparagusand blanketedinsmooth,lemonyhollandaise. By1991,BuzzandLindaW'ereready totaketheplungeandbecomefull-time Mainers."Weimmediatelyfeltathomein Kennebunkport,"Lindasays.Steepinghim¬ selfinthecharacterofhisadoptedhome town,Buzzleaptrightinandbecamea lobsterman.ThedreamheandLindanow sharedbecameatruelaboroflove.Slowly, theyworkedontheirhousetogether.They installedwindowsandskylightswithakeen eyetotheview'softhesurroundingwater. Theyhungdrywall,addedSpanishtile giventothembyafriendlyseacaptain,and trimmedoutthehouseinavarietyofwoods, includingcherry,hickory,cedar,andpine. "Webuiltthedeckssow'ecouldenjoythe saltair"ofthenearbyocean,Lindasays.

Aboathouse,alsoofpost-and-beamcon¬ struction,wasaddedtothepropertyadja¬ centtheproperty'ssensational120feetof deep-waterdock.It's"morebeautifulthan mostpeople'shouses,"Lindaunderstatesof thespacethatcomescompletewithawood¬ workingshop.Livingw'ithwaterbesideyou hereismagic."Iloverollingoutofbedand jumpinginmyboat,"Buzzwasfondofsay¬ ingasthemorningsunsparkledthrough theirwindowsonthewater.

Cold River Vodka waslaunchedin 2005byanexoticquartet:abrainsurgeon,a potatofarmer,aformerOlympicskiinstruc¬ tor,andanexpertinmicro-brewing(broth¬ ersLeeandDonnieThibodeauandfriends BobHarkinsandChrisDowe,respectively). Theirproductwasalmostasunlikelyastheir careermix.

Mostvodkaismadefromfermented grain,mainlywheatorrye.Butthey"had heardstoriesofoldtimersinNortherniMaine makingvodkafrompotatoes,"saysHarkins. How does the creative dynamic work now?

Dan:Youknow,it'ssortofstillevolvingsinceeverything'shappened sofast,frommakingourrecordTheHaloSessions[GLCMusic,$9],to playingabunchofshows,togettingreadytodoournextrecordover thewinter.Initially,Iwasthemainsongwriterandstillamtoday,but thebandisbecomingmorecollaborativeinlirewritingprocess,Ithink, becausewe'vebecomemuchcloseroverthispastyear./\swe'vebecome betterfriends,ittakesawaysomeoftheinhibitionintheprocessofsong¬ writing,wherewe'remuchmoreopentoeachother”sideasandopinions aboutwhatourmusicshouldconvey,bothlyricallyandmusically.

Tailwind is miles away from the hard rock sounds of your former band, Gouds Thumb. How did this new sound come about?

What was the recording process like? Did you shoot for first takes or was this a lengthier process?

Dan:Well,sincethesongswereallinitiallywritten onacousticguitarandpiano,1wentinandplayed allthesongslivewhilesingingmyvocalparts.From there,welaiddownthedrumsandotherinstrumen¬ tationoverwhatI'drecorded.Andno,nothingwas onetake!(Laughs.)JustaskJonathanWyman,our producer.Therecordwasrecordedoveraperiodof abouttwoweeksasJanuaryturnedtoFebruary.

Not very many bands get the opportunity to open for John Fogerty. What was that experience like?

Anna:Ohman,1wasterrified.Iwalked downthepierpastCascoBayLines,and myheartwaspounding-justforsound check!Ineverexpectedtobeplayingsuch ahugeshowsoquickly.Ipassedthe gates,whereIwasgivenmystagepass, andtookadeepbreath.Nothinghas everscaredmemorethanwhenIlooked upandsawthegargantuannatureofit all.Iburstintotears!But,asfearfulas1 felt,Iabsolutelywouldn'thavetradedit fortheworld.

What can we expect from Gypsy Tailwind in 2009?

Dan:Well,youcandefinitelyexpectto seemoremusicoutofus,sincewealllove toplaytogethersomuch,andwritingis averybigpartofwhoweareaspeople. If you could talk about your music with one of your influences, who would it be?

Dan:Annaand1hadareallycoolexperi¬ encehangingoutwithRayLamontagne.Justrecently, wewentoutandhadbreakfastandjusttalkedaboutmusic.Inmy opinion,andIthinkAnnawouldagree,Ravisoneofthemostimportantartistsof thisgeneration,likeEmmylouHarris.AndthefactthatRayisfromMaineisreally special.Admittedly,Ithinkwewerebothalittlebitstarstruck,becausewe'rebig fans.ButthenAnnasaidtomeaswewereleaving,"Heisjustatruly'real'per¬ son."Hegaveusgreatfeedbackonourmusic.We'reveryproudofthat.■
