AtThomastonPlaceGalleriesinRock¬ land,a1:48scalemodeloftheSSDelphine, the258-footprivatemotoryachtofHorace Dodge, co-founder of [automaker] Dodge Brothers'Company,soldfor$39,600.

Made in 1921, the model measured 64 inchesinlengthandwassetonacustom cabinet.ItwasbuiltbyMilanRubessa,a Croatian-born machinist Mr. Dodgepluckedofftheassembly line to make the model. ’•— Rubessa was paid 23 cents an hourforhislaborsandlostan eyeintheproductionofit.

Two stewards in white coatswerestandingreadytoserveameal." WhenElizabethasked,"WhatistheColonel goingtohavetoeat?"thestewardreplied, "CreamofWheat"-modestdiningforaman ofsuchextraordinary'meansthathewas abletogivemorethan$8milliontoCornell University'duringhislifetime.

By1917,withfailinghealth,Paynedecided tojoinotherAmericanmillionaireswhowere lendingtheiryachtstotheU.S.Navyforthe wareffort.Strippedofherluxuriousinteriors, herhullpaintedgunmetalgray',Aphroditewas fittedforserviceasaseagoingpatrolboatat BrooklynNavyYard.WhilePaynehadsailed herwithacrewofbetween55and60,she wouldnowcarry'acrewof128officersand men,alongwithfour3-inchrapidfirers,two machineguns,aY-gun,andalargenumber ofdepthcharges.Nolongerawealthy'man's mostprizedpossession,shewasthe LISS Aphrodite,aUnitedStatesman-of-war.

OnJune14,1917,USS Aphroditesailed from New York Harbor. Payne would not livetoseeherreturn;onJune27,oneday beforetheconvoyreachedFrance,hedied leavinganestatethatTheNetoYorkTimes estimatedat$90million.Threethousand milesaway',Aphroditeandtheotheryacht* wereassignedtopatrolandconvoy'dutyin theBayofBiscay;they'werethefirstunitsof theyachtsquadronsthatbecameknownas theSuicideFleet.

Aphroditeandhercrewservedgallantly, ledby'CaptainFrederickC.Billard,later’ Rear Admiral and Commandant of the U.S Coast Guard. When Billard was awarded theNavyCross,hiscitationread,"fordistin¬ guishedserviceinthelineofhisprofessionas Commanding Officer of theUSSAphrodite engagedintheimportant,exacting,andhaz¬ ardousdutyoftransportingandescorting troopsandsuppliesthroughwatersinfested withenemysubmarinesandmines."

AfewdaysaftertheArmistice,with Billardatthehelm,AphroditeleftBrest,first for England, then for Germany. Repair#

aftersustainingsignificantdamagefroman enemy mine when passing by the German islandfortressofHelgoland,shewasthe firstAmericanshiptopassthroughtheKiel Canal,the61-mile-longcanalthatlinksthe NorthSeaatBrunsbiitteltotheBalticSeaat Kicl-Holtenau.

In1919,Aphrodite steamed home to her newowner,ColonelOliverPayne'sfavorite nephew,PayneWhitney,who'dreceivedthe bulkofhisuncle'sestate.Whenthebattlescarred ship reached Brooklyn, she was decommissioned and her fighting equip¬ mentremoved.Herbuff-coloredsmokestack waspaintedwithtwogoldchevrons-indicatingheroverseasserviceforhercountryandonherbridge,atabletwasinstalledthat containedabriefsummationofherwartime activities.Sadly,shecouldn'tbereturned toheroriginalglory;theinteriorfinishings socarefullyremovedtwoyearsearlierhad beendestroyedwhentheLongIslandware¬ houseinwhichthey'dbeenstoredburned.

In1928,followingthedeathofPayne Whitney,AphroditewassoldtoaGreekfirm thatusedherforinter-islandtransportin the eastern Mediterranean. A draftsman who'dworkedonherin1899capturedthe onlyknownpictureofAphroditeafterher purchase;itshowsherwar-wonchevrons stillonhersmokestack.It'sbelievedthat shewasstillinserviceinthe1930s,butthen shedisappeared,anignominiousendfor thegloriousMaine-builtshiponcehailedas ''America'smostbeautifulyacht."Mighty Aphroditesailedthroughlifeasapartyboat,a warship,andatlastsighting,atransportfor hire.Ifyouseeher,tellherweloveherand askhertowritehome.■
