Harkening from the Midwest, they had in mind something more along the linesofFrankLloydWright.Whenthe KlimekssawtheworkofWiscassetarchi¬ tectJimSchildroth,theyknewtheyhad theirman.

WhileBarbaraKlimekwasexcitedabout FrankLloydWright,shewaslesssureabout themaster'spenchantforlowceilingsand veryhorizontalelements.Sheenvisioned highceilingsandacurvedstaircase,things Wrightwouldprobablyneverconsider.

WhatwouldSchildrothdo?

Strikingly,hehasfoundawaytomeet Klimek'sdesires,trumpsiteconstraints,and remainfaithfultohisownvisionandthe overallWright-ianappealofthehome.

"Itwasexcitingtowatchitcometogetheron paperandthentoseeitgoup,"Klimeksays.

MostingeniouswasSchildroth'sangular deckasittookshape,cantileveredoutward, andreadiedoutacrossthelake.Withitssharp nosejuttingouttowardthewater,itconjures aboat'sbow-butthisisnokitsdiygesture;it's businessandbeautycombined.

"Thelargedeckprojectsawayfromthe housesothatfrominsidethehouse,itshields fromviewaneighboringcottagethatwould intrudeonviewsofthelake,"Schildroth explains.Notonlythat,"anangleddeckis

easiertocantileverthanasquaredeck.”

Thestoneandwoodofexteriorarecare¬ fullymanipulatedwithamixofhorizontal andverticalelementsthatanchorthehouse toitslakesidesurroundings.Thehouse appearsasifitwerenotsimplybuiltupon thesite,butculledfromdeepbelowthe earth.Ithasatimelessauraaboutit.Builtin 1991,itlooksasfreshtodayasthemomentit wasjustfinished.

Thegroundsarefullofcarefullytended perennialbeds,andthelakeisjuststepsfrom thehouse."Wehaveasmallbeach,andthe boat'srightoutside,"Klimeksays."Wecan walkrightoutandgoboatingorswimming."

LegendaryyachtdesignerandentrepreneurJohnG.Alden(1884-1962)founded theBostonfirmin1909andranthebusinessuntil1955.Overitslonghistory,JohnG. AldenCo.createdabout1,250designs,rangingfromdinghiestoCoastGuardcut¬ ter’s.JohnG.Aldenwaspurchasedin1967byTillotsonCorp.,manufacturer’ofrubber products,includinggloves.Anindependentappraiserconnectedrepresentativesfor AldenwithNortheastAuctions.

Theyatewhiletheyworked.Aftermore thananhour,Jackshutthesawoffand motionedforPetetocomegasup.Pete filledhisthree-quartersfullbeforethecan wentdry.

"1thought1toldyoutobringupthefull canofgas,"Jacksaid.Hecouldn'tspeakto Dougwithouttensionandfrustrationboil¬ inginhisvoice.Jacklookedatthepileof scorchedlimbswhereDoughadstartedthe fireandhesworeunderhisbreath.Doug's facetwistedlikeachild'suntilanidea seemedtocomeoverhim.

"I'llgogetsomemore,"hesaid."That store'sjustafewmilesdowntheroad."

Jackdugthekeysoutofhispocketand handedthemover.

Dougtookoffrunningdownthehill,and JackandPetestartedupthesaws.Thetrees tumbled.Itwastooearlyintheseasonyet

formidgesandblackflies,butrobinsand whippoorwillsflittedthroughtheair.Jack workedtirelessly,evenfrantically,thesweat runningdownthechannelsonhisnarrow backasifitweresummeralready.Forthe firsttime,Petethoughtmaybehecouldput theaccidentbehindhim.

Theskyturnedmattegrayandthe woodsdarkenedintheshadows.Therain soakedhishair,andeventuallyhissawquit. Thenitstartedtosleet.PetefoundhiswetTshirtonapileofwoodandpulleditoverhis head.Jackwalkedtowardhimluggingthe chainsaw.Hisfacewasdrawnandnarrow, hismouthhangingopenwithsteampour¬ ingout.Hedidn'tseemtograspyetthatit wassleeting,andthatitwascold."Where's Doug?"hesaid,settingthesawdownand scanningthewoods.

Therestoftheirclotheswereinthetruck, withDougandthematches.Jacklooked straightupintotheskyandclosedhiseyes astherainandsleethithisface.Petehad neverseenJackmisstepinthewoods,but hewatchednowasJackslippedonapatch oficeandhittheground,snappinghisleg againstarock.Jackmadehishandsintofists andheldtheminfrontofhischest.

"Run-hurry,"Jacksaid."Downtothe storeatthecrossing."

Ithadbeenaneasyclimbupearlier,but nowPetehadtolowerhimselffromtreeto treeacrossafieldofice.Whenhereachedthe road,itwasimpossibletogethisfootingon theglass}'surface.Helungedforwardintoa sluggishjog,hisjointsstiff,hiswholebody shaking,hisarmsdeadweight.Petefellto hiskneesontheroad.Hewastired.

Onthenightoftheaccident,Petehad passedoutanddidn'twakeupuntilthecar wasinaspin,andhecurledhisarmsover hisheadjustbeforeheshotthroughthefront windshieldandlandedinthegrass.Bothhis armswerebrokeninseveralplaces,andhis neckhurt.Jenleanedagainstthesteering wheel,herfacetornandsmashed.Shewas stillbreathing,hecouldtell,fromtirebubbles inthebloodaroundherbustednose.

Thelightwasfailing.Peteslowlypushed himselfbackupandkeptstumblingforward, justashehadforthelastsixmonths,goingto AAmeetingswithJack.Workingtenhoursa

day.Jacktheonlyonewhowouldhirehim. Petesawinthedistancearamshacklebar withaneonBudsignhanginginthewin¬ dow.Jack'struckwasparkedoutfront,and hecouldseethekeysintheignition.IIehad todriveslowlyonthetranslucenticeasblan¬ ketsofrainandsleetwashedoverthecab. Theirfootprintshadbeenwashedaway, butherecognizedthespot.Withabundleof clothestuckedunderhisarm,hestruggled upthehill.

WhenPetereachedthetop,helooked around,butJackwasn'tthere.Freshbranch¬ eshadbeenpulledintoamoundoverthe ashesofthebrushDoughadburned,and Petepeeledthemofflikescalesuntilhe foundthecharredcoreofwhatlookedat firstlikeabundleofblackenedsticks.Apair ofeyesflashedfromthemiddleofthepile, widewhiteglobescenteredwithgreenand black.Theyvanishedandappearedagain. Gradually,PetedistinguishedJack'sbody curlednakedwithhiskneespulledupto hischestandeveryinchofhisskinandhair cakedwithathicklayerofashandmud.

"Wehavetogo,"Petesaid,butJack juststaredblanklyathimasifhenolonger understoodthelanguage.

"I'mwaitingforDoug,"Jacksaid.

Petereachedunderthecrustedtorsoand triedtolift,butJackhadseizedarounda graniteboulderandcouldn'torwouldn'tlet go.Jackclosedhiseyes,andPetespreadhis armsandlegsoverJack,makinghimselfinto ablanket.

"It'sme,"PetesaidintoJack'sear."It's Doug,"hesaid.Jackletgooftheboulder, andPetepulledhimup.Togethertheyslid fromtreetotreedownthehill,andwhen theyreachedthepavement,Petecarriedhim therestoftheway.
