Buthey,thebrasslockonthehaspoftheovaldoorwasopen.

Steppinginside,Iwasdelightedtoseelowlyrecibrick,witharopeforarailswirlingupto thetopandawrought-ironspiralstairthatwouldbetheenvyofNewOrleans.

Onthewayupwasaseriesofwindowlandingscoveredwithdeadsongbirdsinvibrantblues andgreens.Wheredidtheycomefrom?Wasthiswhereallthecanariesdisappearedto whentheyescapedfromtheircages?

Fromthisheight,vertigosetsin,andthetopofthelighthouseseemstomove andwhiparoundliketheCNTowerinToronto.Iflattenedtomychestand grabbedforthedecktokeepfrombeingthrownoff.Itwasmymindthatwas moving,ofcourse,butbelieveme,thesensationismorerealthanIMAX.Then, ifyouhaven'tfledyet,youpullyourselfuptotheraillesseyeofBoonIsland. Whatyoufeelnowisfear.Youarecertainthatthelighthouseisgoingtolean oversofaritwilltoppletothegroundoutofitshatredforyourintrusion.Arush ofMountAgamenticusanddizzyhotelssearsthroughyourhead,withwaves almostBermudablueandgreen.1think1rememberseeinggrayNavypaintand asound-poweredphoneconnectedtonowhere.

Itwasmvfirstexperiencewithahurri¬ caneinMaine.Wewentwithaneighbor ofGeorgeBush'stothetopofalittlehill behindtheCapeArundelInnandlooked downacrossOceanAvenue.Therewasa visualelectricityinthewater,asthough awirehadcomeinandelectrifiedthis wholething.ThenIwalkeddowntothe street,whenitwasdangerousandthe wavescouldhaveenvelopedmeatany instantbuttheydidn't;theyjuststopped. Ihavenofearofmyowndeathinwater. Ultimately,webelongthere.

What'sthemostprofound,surprisingthingaper¬ sonhassaid,evenifbyaccident,inyourstudio? Menwillcomeinhereandstart crying. Tough guys. One came in,veryquiet,andhesatdown

inachairandfacedoneofthepaintings. Woodburyeventuallyturneditoverto ElwvnCowen(1895-1954),oneofhis teachersattheartcolony.Therearenum¬ bersontheeasel-it'sWoodbury'swrit¬ ing.IalsoownJosephArnts'seasel.Both weremadein1882,forlargeworks.There hastobesomesortofmagicinthem.1 don'tpaintontheWoodburyone.Itwas justawayofgettingtoknowamanwho absolutelyknewhowtopaintthesea.It alsohelpedmebecomeapartofMaine.1 paid$900forit-asteal.Someonewasbid¬ dingagainstmeallthewaythrough,and IfoundoutlatershewasaWoodbury relative,livingintheKennebunks.

tospeakinglanguagesinMaine.Wedidn't askforassistanceinanotherlanguage-that wouldbeanothersurveyentirelv-butwe didaskfortherighttospeakFrenchin public,andthatactcausedotherstoreact. Iwouldn'tsaytheybristled,butcertainly therewassomecringing,somewide-eved listening,andsomeprivatewondering qu'est-cequedehellisthis?tohearsome¬ thingspokenbesidesEnglish.

Thetraditioncontinuedunbrokenfor morethan30years,withtwoadditional boatsaddedtothefleetinthe1920s.Bythe late1930sand1940s,however,mostofthe boatshadchangedhandsandfewerraces werebeingheld.

In1981,Goldsteindiscoveredandpur¬ chasedoneoftheoriginalsewn,Cloverly,in Sorrento,justafewmilesfromWinterIlarboi; andhadherrestoredatCaterpillarBoatWorks inBlue1lill.

"Thefollowingsummer,IhadCloverlyin thewaterbackinWinterHarbor.Wedida littlebitofracingwiththethreeboats,which wasreallyfun.Idecidedtotrytofindtherest ofthefleet."There'sapause."Overaperiod oftimeIfoundthemall."

Itwasn'tasoloeffort.Maritimehistorian MaynardBray,WoodenBoat'slongtimetech¬ nicaleditor,helpedsleuthoutthelocationof anumberoftheboats,whileFitzDixonor Goldsteinbankrolledsomeoftheinitialpur¬ chasesandrestoration.

Soon,JohnBanesownedhisgrandfather's boat,Sphinx,whichBaneshadlastsailed asachildin1941.Whippet,F.O.Spedden's Piddle,andGeorgeDallasDixon'soriginal boat,RamblerII, wok reclaimed,aswasWater Witch,originallyownedbyF.E.Dixon.Only theblack-hulledMysteryeludedthem.

Goldsteinpicksupthestory."By1988,we hadalltheboatsinthefleetbutNo.1,which wascalledMystery. One day, Maynard BraycamesailingintoWinterIlarborand said,'Ihaveapresentforvou.'Hehanded meapieceofpaperwithanameandtele¬ phonenumberandsaid,'Thiswomanowns Mystery.'SoIcalledherandshesaid,'Yes,I havetheboat,'butshe'dconvertedherinto acruisingboat."

Thewomanwasn'tinterestedinselling. WithMysteryback,allnineboatswere sailingtogetheragain.InJuly1990,thecen¬ tennialoftheWinterHarborYachtClub washeld."AsfarasIknow,Ican'tthinkof anotherfleetthat'soriginal,100yearsold, andstillracing,"saysGoldstein,whosewife, Vicki,haswrittenextensivelyaboutthefleet anditshistory.

Sixteenyearslater,acelebrationofthe WinterHarbor21s'owncentennialwas planned(forAugust4-6,2006,complete withafive-raceregatta,lobsterbake,dinnerdanceandawardsceremony),butthe eventwasmarkedbybothcelebrationand mourning.OnAugust2,2006,FitzDixon diedofmelanoma.WithoutDixon,thelast twoknockaboutswouldlikelynothave survived,letalonebeenkeptinpristinecon¬ dition,norwouldthefleethavebeenassem¬ bledagain.Fittingly,thatweekend,Dixon's 15-year-oldgranddaughterbecamethenew ownerofElfitz,theboathewasgivenatthe sameage.

Cariisle: "Whatvou'reseeinghereis prettyidealfor1850s.Therangeisstate-ofthe-artforthetime,andit'ssurprisinglyearly toseesucharangeinatownthatwasabitof anoutpost.Therewasmoneyandthought spentonmakingitagoodkitchen,butitwas notthemostexpensiveofitsera.

"Beyondthesurfacesyoucantellit'sa workspace,althoughacomfortableone.
