1940sbyherbrother-in-law,CharlesChild,andhis familv,withhelpfromherhusband,Paul,Charles's identicaltwin.ThelogcabinsatontheshoresofBlue HillBavandgrewoverthenext20years"likeagame ofdominoes,"accordingtoCharles.Ithousedhim,his wife,theirthreechildren,andJuliaandPaulasoftenas theycouldcome,aswellasassortedguests.Juliacon¬ tributedtoamajoradditionbypeelinglogsandsew¬ ingwindowcurtains.

Charlesdescribesherinhisfamilymemoir,Rootsin theRock,as"atall,willowycreaturewithdark,curly hairandblue,blueeves,asjollyandgavasPaulwas serious....Shewasatough,relentlessworkeratwhat¬ eversheundertook,immenselysystematic,deter-

AftershepassedtheCordonBleuschool inFrance,trainedunderseveralParisian chefs,andstartedaFrenchcookingschool, Juliataughthernieces,RachelandErica, howtomakehigh-styleFrenchcuisinein theirrusticMainekitchen.Rachelresponded bycreatingahatforJuliawith"wildflow¬ ers,bedsprings,wheatstraw,andribbons," Charleswrites.Later,JuliacametoMaineto correctproofsforMasteringtheArtofFrench Cooking.Aphototakenthenshowshersit¬ tingatadeskinaplaidshirt,pants,and topsiders,herhairinhertrademarktight shortcurls,hergazeintentlyfocusedonthe proofs.1lerhusbandsitsbare-chestedather side,alsocheckingproofs.Throughanopen windowwiththingauzecurtains,pinesrise justoutside.

ForacheflikeJulia,whoinsistedonthe freshestpossibleingredients,Mainewasa delight.Thefamilycaughtpollockforher BouillabaissealamodedeBlueHillBay(which shemadewiththefish,potatoes,fennel,and saffron).Atlowtidethe}'gatheredfatpurple musselsforhertomakeMoullesMarineres. LocallobstersbecameherLobsterArchduke andButter-PoachedMaineLobster.The gardenburgeonedwithtwokindsofsweet corn,turnips,carrots,beets,whiteonions, potatoes,dill,sixvarietiesoflettuce,summer squash,radishes,andpolebeans.Thefamily alsoplantedasmallorchardwithfourtypes ofapples.Raspberries,blueberries,andcran¬ berriesgrewwildontheir20-acreestate.

TheChilds'land,knownas"OldPoint," isasword-shapedmassofrockandforest juttingoutintothesea.Greatrockyledges sweeptotheshore,andmagnificentold pinessomehowmanagetotakerootinthe rock.Manyofthepinesdripwithgray¬ greenmoss,"which[gives]themthedigni¬ tyofbeardeddruids,"Charleswrites.The forestissothickinsomeplaces,localkids make"amonkeytrail"topassfrombranch tobranchwithoutevercomingdownfrom thetreetops.

OldPointisseparatedfromtherestof Mt.Desertbyalow-lyingbog.Heretheland issonarrowthatsomeonepassingoverthe Childs'soggv,barelypassableroadcansee

theseashimmeringonbothsides.Whenthefamilyfinally finishedanimprovedroutetothecabin,Juliacelebrated bvmakingGateauFouriealaCremed'Orange,atwo-layer spongecakewithorange-butterfilling,coveredbybutter¬ creamicing,toppedwithanapricotglaze,andsprinkled withalmonds.

Withherhusbandworkingabroadandthedemands ofherowncareer,Juliacouldn'tspendasmuchtimein Maineasshemighthavewished.Butshewroteoftenin whatCharlesdescribesas"homesickletters,"askingtobe keptapprisedofallthelatestdevelopments."Tellusevery¬ thing!"shewritesinoneofthem."Whatareyoudoing? Whatbuilding?WhatnewthingshasFred(thenickname forCharles'swife,Fredericka,aninnovativecook)invent¬ ed?Howarethegardens?"■

WhenJuliaChildcametoMaine,

shespentmuchofhertimecookingathome-oneofherfavoritepastimes. Butshealsofrequentedseverallocalrestaurantsandlikedtoknowwho wasdoingwhatontheculinaryfront.

Once or twice every summer, she went toThe Seafood KetchinBass Harbor.OwnerLisaBranchsaysJuliaalwaysorderedthebroiledhalibut withlemonbutterandwhitewine,arelativelysimpledish."Iaskedifshe'd likesomethingmoreelaborate,butshesaidshecoulddothefancystuff herself.Shejustwantedtotastethefish.Wefilletourhalibutrighthere,so it'sveryfresh.Juliausuallycameforlunchwithacoupleoffamilymembers. They'dsitonthedeckoverlookingBassHarborandwatchthefishermen unloadingthelobsters."

Inthesummerof1991,LuciaEvanswasjuststartingherjobaspastry chefatArrows,inOgunquit.Staffoftenplayedtricksonnewemployees-a sortofinitiation-andtheyjokedthatJuliaChildwascomingtodinner.To everyone'ssurprise,aguestsuddenlyappearedinthekitchen,andthat

telltalevoiceboomed,"Ijustlovetoseewomeninthekitchen!"Itreally was JuliaChild.SheaskedhowlongEvanshadworkedthere.Thepastrychef admitteditwasherfirstnight,andtheybothlaughed.

In 2001, Child asked Chef Michael Salmon atThe Hartstone Innin Camdentoprepareabirthdaydinnerforherandafewclosefamilymem¬ bersandfriends.Sheleftallthedetailsuptohim."Celebritieseathere allthetime,andMichaelneverbatsaneye,butI'veneverseenhimas nervousaswhenshecametodinner,"saysMaryJoSalmon,hiswifeand co-owneroftheinn.ChefSalmondidsomeresearchtodiscoverJulia's preferences and created a special menu just for her: Seared Chinese Five-Spice Quail with Ginger-Tossed Vegetables, followed by Mixed Baby Greens with a Papaya-Seed Dressing and Maine Lobster, followed by Peach Sorbet, followed by Hazelnut-Encrusted Rack of Lamb with a Merlot Bordelaise and Chive Smashed Potatoes and, for dessert, Fresh BerrySoufflewithaChambordCremeAnglaise.(Forrecipes,visitOnline Extrasatportlandmonthly.com.)

Juliawasanaturalham."ButthenIrealizeditwas therealdeal.Ilovedit,andallmyfamilylovedit."So when he heard that Julia was celebrating her 90th birthdayataprivatepartyinStonington,hedecided tosendherapresent.Hefilledabigboxwithhishot and cold smoked salmon and tubs of his trout pate andsalmonpate.Thenhetypedalittlelettertoher, sayingthesegiftswereinappreciationforallher workovertheyearsandwishingherahappybirthday.
