“I Love Maine!”
ou can’t call it a real Maine summer without Judy Collins performing at Jonathan’s in Ogunquit. “I’ve been coming to Maine for fifty years, at least,” says the Manhattan-based singer, famous for her renditions of “Send in the Clowns” and “Both Sides Now.” For Jonathan’s, the ritual is personal, a matter of sweet luck. “Judy’s been performing here forever,” says Larry Johnson. “At least twice a year. We had to do two shows that first night for 480 people.” How does a perennial summer visitor pack for Maine? Is there a special black sweater she has to bring or that perfect scarf for a brisk walk along Marginal Way? “I always pack for every season, wherever I go.” Asked what her favorite haunts in Ogunquit are, she says, “Jonathan’s! This is not a sightseeing trip. We get there and go on stage. There’s time for a nap. Then we’re on to the next destination.” Sure, but if she was born in Seattle (she moved to Colorado at age 10) and she performs often on the East Coast, she’s seen the U.S. from both sides now. Which Portland is best? “I like them all,” she says. Aha, a global perspective. There is a Portland, UK; a Portland, New Zealand; and a Portland in Ontario, Canada! You have to go deeper to what makes Maine a great stop for her. For any Judy Collins fan, there are some interesting cultural connections. Stephen Sondheim (Into the Woods), who wrote “Send in the Clowns” as part of A Little Night Music, went to summer camp as a child at Camp Androscoggin in Maine (see “Into the Woods,” February/March 2019), so we’re a cultural convergence zone. Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young was once romantically linked to Collins. His “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” is all about the girl, a stunning tribute. Years ago, Stills spent a lost winter renting a place in Cape Porpoise on Pier Road, with views of the lobster boats. Or so a local legend goes. Why? Maine is both a great place to be seen and a great place to disappear. Sometimes you just feel like having a lot of seagulls around you. Singer/songwriter (and Maine native) Will Holt (famous for “Lemon Tree”) retired to Long Lake in Maine (see “Music Man,” Summerguide 2013). It was an easy guess that Holt and Collins were friends during their Greenwich Village days, and we were right. “Oh, I was very fond of him. I was opening for Will Holt and Dolly Jonah in Chicago and in New York. He was a big influence on me,” along with contemporaries Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Interesting. Will Holt moved back to Maine. Maine really is one of those places intentionally off the grid. Has Collins ever fantasized about living here? “I love Maine, but I’m a Colorado girl. That’s where I’ll spend more time when I can.” Hey, not everybody’s a foodie. But she does pack quite an audience. Her music lights up the Maine coast when she’s here—from both sides now.

It Begins with an M I just picked up a copy February/March 2019 at Tony’s Donuts and wanted to comment on the story with Lauren Bacall [“Into the Woods”]. I enjoyed the story very much and thought Colin did a really nice job. The idea of the article was a winner. My wife, Julia Adams, a violist in the Portland String Quartet, remembered a story about her mother, Ellen Chase, sharing a tent with Bette Davis at a camp near Fryeburg, Maine. I don’t know how to spell it… Mudjekeewis?! Eliot Stanley, Portland Hawkeye I picked up the February/March [2018] issue of Portland Monthly at Maine Historical Society last Friday, in connection with the presentation on John Ford. I finally got a chance to read through your article “The Real John Ford,” which I enjoyed, until the point on page 33 where there is a reference to the film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence. Ouch, it should be Valance. [Signed] Your attentive reader who spells pretty well but always checks the names of people/titles of films, plays, music/places when writing for publication. Christine Holden, Lewiston Jaw Dropper This is a truly stunning cover [Winterguide 2019]. Took my breath away! Amanda Erin Stanley, Topsham

Tug-of-War
The Eliot Winslow rides the waves of time to a safe haven in Bar Harbor. Built in 1943 in Georgia and dubbed the Port Clinton, the tugboat was acquired by a New York firm in 1945 and renamed Captain. The Winslow changed hands three times from 1950 to 1964 before anchoring at Winslow Marine Inc. of Southport in 1982. It’s here she was named after Maine’s famous Captain Eliot Winslow, who commanded the WWII Coast Guard cutter Argo. In 2014, Eastport Port Authority called her Captain Mac, but today she’s part of the fleet at Downeast Windjammer.
Hot Chicks The black-capped chickadee and boreal chickadee fought for the title of Maine State Bird in recent weeks. The chickadee was designated as our state bird in 1927, but Nick Lund of the Maine Audubon pointed out there are two different types. Decision time? According to the Bangor Daily News, the Maine Legislature considered the issue but decided to move on.

Light It Up
Modeled after the Providence project “WaterFire,” “Kennebec on Fire” has been awarded $75,000 by the Maine Arts Commission. A collaboration between Main Street Skowhegan and Wesserunsett Arts Council, sculptures will be created around fire braziers and placed in the Kennebec River. They’ll be lit during community festivals. Project coordinator Mary Haley says, “This summer, we’ll put out the first call for proposals. If all goes well, the remaining four of five sculptures should be installed in spring 2020. The designers will be Maine artists, with preference for Skowhegan artists.”
Forgotten but not gone… The building described as “permanence and authority in stone” in Deering: A Social and Architectural History fell to a wrecking ball on August 31, 1961. But wait! A third of the station’s metal rain shield still exists at the tip of Thompson’s Point, covering music audiences. It’s been stripped and repainted by engineer Bo Kennedy and his team at Placemaker Partners. “If you really look at the bones of it, it’s a cool structure,” Kennedy says. The crown of Union Station’s clock tower sits in Congress Square Park, and the driveway of the historic Samuel Fickett House on Westbrook Street showcases cobblestones from the station (see “Top of the Heap,” October 2018).

Squirrel Nut Zippers are taking over Aura on April 19. This North Carolina band has been keeping audiences hotstepping since the Swing Revival of the 1990s. You might remember jiving to their hit “Put a Lid On It.” If you want to take the floor at the show, try one of the 30 minute drop-in classes every Thursday at Portland Swing Project.
In Portland, we like classic: dinner and a show followed by a nightcap. Good Theater’s Lucky Stiff runs through April 28 at St. Lawrence Arts Center. It’s the perfect opportunity for a night on the Hill. Take your Broadway baby to a pre-show dinner at Blue Spoon for our go-to Munjoy meal—the Seared Scallops ($14) and Arctic Char ($27). Afterward, slip down to Washington Avenue for Oxbow Brewing. Hungry after all the drama? Duckfat Friteshack has late-night bites, including Belgian frites, poutine, and doughnut holes.

Take Two
They say you can’t go home again. But what if home is a go-to bar from your past? By O l ivia Gu nn Kotsishevs kaya
Serial Dining ith new restaurants popping up monthly, there’s no remaining faithful to our first loves. You can’t be a monogamous patron in Portland. A lot of meals end up one-night stands, even if it was one of the best I’ve had. There’s always a new restaurant or bar to check out. There’s always a new review or funky concoction over at Hunt and Alpine giving me the eyes. It was only recently that I recognized it may be getting out of hand. I sent out a text to friends inciting a get-together. Feeling nostalgic, I wanted to reconnect with an old flame. Meet at Gritty’s around 5:30? But no one was interested in an Old Port venture, at least not with me. This all sent me down a remember-the-good-times rabbit hole. Are we bar snobs? Can’t fathom sharing a pint among the tourists? Do we only drink West End lavenderinfused Manhattans now? (I’ve never had a lavender-infused Manhattan.) What about Bull Feeney’s? “Oh, God. The last time we were at Bull Feeney’s was for...brunch— and only because we were Christmas shopping.” And yet it’s wonderful. How wonderful does a bar or restaurant have to be in a world where an attraction’s 15 minutes of fame is being shaved down to 12 minutes? “Ask Outliers,” my friend said. I climbed out of my rabbit hole, reminding myself there’s no need to relive the 1 a.m. crawl out of Rosie’s. Here are a few gems that have dropped off my radar for

no valid reason, and some that were never on it. They deserve nothing less than a full-on, robust revisit in search of a deeper, more thoughtful experience. Take Two. And for good measure, I’ve brought my skeptical friend. Hello, Old Friend “I went to Gritty’s for lunch last week.” “See any tumbleweeds?” Harsh. Actually, I enjoyed one of the
best haddock sandwiches I’ve had in a long time. The Scottish Ale set me straight with a 6.2 percent ABV. Still unconvinced, my friend scoffs, “they haven’t changed their beer list in like 25 years.” All right, Bissell bro. Gritty’s rolls out a new brew nearly every month. Have you tried the new Good Day IPA? Guess you’re due for a visit. “We used to go there all the time,” Jessica, a life-long-thus-far Portlander, chimes in. “The Deering kids went to Gritty’s. Falmouth and Yarmouth went to Bull Feeney’s before the USM kids took over.” Who
f you’re in your early twenties, you’ll find here what you’re seeking at any bar: beer, friends, and music. Gritty’s now hosts game night on Sundays for those craving some Mario Kart action. Open mic nights showcase local comedians and poets. Trivia nights are livened up with hosts from WCYY. Maybe I’ve outgrown Gritty’s nightlife. I stopped celebrating Easter with two-day drinking binges a while ago. I have no interest in the Old Port mating rituals. Even so, there’s still a seat for me at the bar. I’m owning it full-heartedly—I’m a Gritty’s lunch lady.
Let Me Upgrade You The first meal I had at Walter’s was with my friend’s mother. She took me to dinner to celebrate my engagement. The meal was excellent, the wine perfectly paired, and I think she even ordered us dessert.

And then I never went back. Not because it wasn’t delicious. It was only that I was 26 at the time, broke, and still trying to figure out how to order a glass of red. Today, I consider Walter’s perfect for a happy hour. A dinner for two is still out of my price range. As my friend says, “Back Bay Grill is for doctors. Walter’s is for lawyers.” (She adds she saw Olympia Snowe there once–not just a lawyer!) What about writers? That’s where the bar comes in. During regular hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to close, try dishes from the bar menu—as creative as chef Jeff Buerhaus’s dinner menu. Consider the Cracklin Calamari with a “basil lemon cherry pepper aoili and candied jalapeños” ($10) along with the Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps ($8) and a cocktail. Déjà Vu More and more I find myself rediscovering Portland, but it’s never planned. A night with friends at Novare Res, where I hadn’t been in at least two years, turned out to be one of those instances. After several rounds, friends filing in each time, the group stomped down to Old Port Tavern to play pool. The night ended with midnight tater tots at Blue Rooster. Classic.

athleen Pierce, director of member experience for HospitalityMaine, knows it takes more than a top ten list to make it here. “In Portland’s competitive restaurant landscape, there’s a reason that stalwarts like Five Fifty Five, David’s, and DiMillo’s thrive,” she says. “They’re fluent in the latest trends but aren’t slaves to food fashion. More importantly, these institutions lead with hospitality. That comforting feeling that you matter more than the latest Instagram influencer. That’s how you keep regulars for decades.” You won’t be surprised by one of her favorite haunts—a phoenix of the Old Port. “I’m heartened to see places like Three Dollar Deweys reopen with new energy and excitement. It’s not trendy. It’s homey and true. Plus, free popcorn and cold beer never go out of style.” You could spend an entire weekend visiting some of the original Portlanders, those timeless, comforting hangouts. These spots welcome us back again and again, no matter the time apart. If we consider our attractions with a fresh eye, we’ll be fresher ourselves n

1947 Maine Turnpike was extended from Portland to Augusta in 1955. After T hemoreoriginal, than six decades, it’s time to make significant repairs and improvements. It includes
widening the section of Turnpike from Mile 44 to Mile 49—starting in 2020—as well as upgrading Turnpike bridges throughout the corridor and making other improvements along the way.
All four bridge projects will be under construction in 2019. All told, the improvements on the fivemile stretch may include as many as a dozen individual projects and will take several years, but the benefits will be substantial: a safer, smoother highway and reduced traffic congestion—paid for 100 percent by Turnpike tolls. Cue fog, crashing waves, and John Carpenter-esque intro synths and you’ve got yourself a horror film (or a Mainer’s dream vacation). On fictional Tucker Island in Tess Gerritsen’s Island Zero, the characters’ cozy ocean life turns nightmare when they find themselves “cut off from the outside world” and neighbors begin to disappear. Shot in and around Camden and Rockport, the 2018 film was directed by the bestselling author’s son, Josh Gerritsen, who says location was key. To maintain the film’s eerie, aged aesthetic, they needed “locations that gave a sense of history and soul.” Two midcoast inns, Swan House and Victorian By The Sea, “fit the bill perfectly.” Camden’s Swan House B&B, an 1870 Victorian, got its fill of action during shooting. “We needed a room

that felt rustic and large enough to allow multiple actors to move around the space,” Josh says. “We staged a big fight scene there that required more room than the average inn offered.” As for the romantic, coastal gem Victorian By The Sea in Lincolnville, guests were delighted to learn the bright, airy inn was chosen for the horror film. At the time, it was owned by Robert and Jeanne Short. “It gave us just what we were looking for: an entrance that had a fireplace and a grand staircase,” Josh says. “These components were crucial for a big, gruesome scene, and they had just what we needed.”

aroline Cole, who bought the inn after production finished, has yet to view the final product. “I really don’t see those kinds of films. I’m an alternative health practitioner, and I try to keep a sense of zen. In fact,” she says, “a film producer came to me a few months ago about filming, and I actually declined. That energy is not for me. The entire breakfast room looks over the ocean, and the place is filled with light. It almost does an injustice to it.” The contrast between the inn’s reality and what we see in Island Zero is stark. Luckily for Cole and her visitors, the film’s cleanup crew did a spectacular job. It’s a testament to the magic of filmmaking—we can be whisked away to an alien invasion right here on our romantic coast of Maine.

Crawford’s Spring of Youth It’s somewhat of a town legend now. Hollywood high priestess Joan Crawford storms through Poland Spring, Pepsi Colas in her wake (did anyone offer her a Moxie?). Wolf Cove Inn would be marked for eternity. In 1963, the 11-room estate, a former summer retreat built in 1894, existed as Lobster-Land on the Lake. It would be the set for an episode of the TV show Route 66, which followed two young men finding themselves as they road tripped across the country. An episode guest-starring Crawford would have a scene shot on the property. But why not hear the story from someone who was there? Portland’s beloved arts critic and actress Fritzi Cohen remembered “Mama Crawford” well. “…I worked briefly with superstar Joan Crawford at Poland Spring, Maine, in ‘Same Picture, Different Frame,’ an episode of the television series Route 66. At the time, Ms. Crawford was married to the Pepsi Cola magnate and she was Lady Bountiful, dispensing Pepsi to the peons on the set. I played a librarian in a scene with Patrick O’Neal. The scenario is that he sees me and remembers Crawford in the same set-

The crisp crack of a soda can among the whispers of pines along the shore of Tripp Lake. Summer Sizzle Reel n June 1957, crews started filming Peyton Place, the salacious story of a proper New England town overflowing with scandal. They’d take over the towns of Camden and Belfast. In Camden, it was the highlight of the summer. “Other towns had turned them down flat because they didn’t want to be associated with Peyton Place. It was a pretty racy, steamy novel,” librarian Ken Actor Roger Moore dined at the York Harbor Inn regularly while filming Bed & Breakfast in Ogunquit and York.

Gross says. “Looking back, it was almost like a carnival-type atmosphere,” says Todd McIntosh, one of the locals you can see on screen in a James Dean-style red jacket. “The producers, directors, they allowed a lot of townspeople to mill around the locations. And when we were told, ‘Quiet on the set,’ we quieted down. People were allowed to kind of mingle in and out and talk with some of the stars and the production crew.” Adapted from the best-selling novel by Grace Metalious, the film was directed by Mark Robson and starred Lana Turner, though she never visited Camden.

ne local star, however, was ready for her closeup. Whitehall, known as Whitehall Inn at the time of filming, overlooks High Street, not far from the harbor. It’s been operating as a hotel since the early 1900s when it was expanded from the original 1834 sea captain’s house. You can spot our silver screen queen almost two hours in when Allison, Diane Varsi, stops at a local bar upon returning to Peyton Place. General manager Gwen Clemens says that although the inn’s part in the movie is small, it’s not insignificant. “We still get tourists who come by because they recognize the inn from the film,” she says. “It’s an integral part of Camden. That’s probably why they picked it.”
Let’s Talk.
“ Cameron Diaz and Harvey Keitel play a married couple in Head Above Water, a remake of a 1993 Norwegian film. Nils Gaup, the original director, once said, “Twice Hollywood has remade my films, and both times they have managed to make the worst movie ever.”
Besides Peyton Place, Whitehall can be spotted in the 1996 adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel Thinner.

Sleep like a star An affair, a body, and the beauty of glistening Phippsburg beaches—turns out it’s the perfect equation for a forty percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Released in 1996, starring Cameron Diaz and Harvey Keitel, Head Above Water is a dark comedy that takes place in a private cottage on Lincoln Beach. Sebasco Harbor Resort owner Bob Smith took over a year after the film was released. “All of the underwater scenes were shot in the big pool at Sebasco. They threw seaweed in there to make it murky and look like a lagoon. But it was fall and chilly. Apparently, Cameron Diaz came close to turning blue from so many takes. I guess it looked like they were shooting a Martian movie.” The majority of scenes were shot in a temporary cottage built for the film, but Smith says a lot of filming took place around the beaches near the resort.
T
urned out, Head Above Water producer Jim Wilson took a liking to the area. Message in a Bottle would start filming in town a year later starring Kevin Costner, Robin Wright, and Paul Newman. “Some of the crew for that movie stayed here,” Sebasco Harbor Resort’s Bob Smith says. “Paul Newman showed up with his daughter. He wanted to have dinner, but we’d already closed. The security guard at the time fashioned himself as kind of an actor—he’d been in a senior film. He told Newman, ‘I think they closed.’ Newman

fter a recent film premiere at Portland Museum of Art’s pillared indoor theater (a hidden gem), the question pops up: Where can we go after the show? There are a million possibilities in the “Restaurant City of the Year.” But to a barnacly Maine native, there’s only one to fit the exacting requirements. The Top of the East is right across the street from Portland Museum of Art. You can park at the Westin Harborview Hotel ($24/day) and attend your film premiere. Then float over to the Westin’s legendary Top of the East without re-parking. Sometimes kismet is foresight in disguise. It’s only icing on the cake when you
learn the executive producer, co-screenwriter, and star of the film Jacqueline and Jilly (Maine native Victoria Rowell) is already staying at the Westin! Great drinks aren’t the only offer at the Top. It serves up romantic city views of our illustrious skyline and Portland Harbor. Your prospects are up in lights from this Olympian perspective. If you haven’t been up here for a while, it’s twice as good as you remember it. The small plates are delicious. You’ve got to start with the exciting Flight of Shrimp ($15)–Gulf shrimp jumping with a housemade vodka-infused cocktail sauce. Why start with a flight? There’s a sweet story here. This bar, with its head in the stars, is
located in the very hotel that world-famous aviator Charles Lindbergh dedicated in 1927 after he flew solo across the Atlantic in the Spirit of St. Louis. As part of the hotel’s grand opening, its front-door keys were flown over Portland Harbor by Lindbergh’s PR guy and dropped into the drink—to signify the hotel’s doors will always be open. Tonight, we’re so glad they are. Everybody loves a backstory, but food is the news tonight. The Cuban Sliders ($12), made from “local ham and pork, mustards, pickles, swiss,” are too satisfying to share. Everybody’s sneaking the homemade Maine Potato Chips with Caramelized Onion Dip ($9). Vegetable Samosas with Cucumber Raita ($9); Lobster Sliders ($21); Warm Pretzels with Dark Beer Dip ($12); a Charcuterie Board ($18); the Top of the East Caesar ($10); and Pineland Farm Cheddar are being gobbled up around us, with drinks ($15 each) served promptly in between, among them the “Bubbly Pear” (elderflower liqueur, pear puree, and L’Onesta Lambrusco sparkling red); a “Maple Old Fashioned” (Bulleit rye, Maine maple syrup, and molasses bitters); and the “Top of the East 75” (Beefeaters gin, Christian Brothers brandy, and fresh lemon). Wedding Bands …to have and to hold and to dance like no one’s watching. By Ev elyn Waugh
our wedding reception is a dream set to music—if the music’s right. We’re all still recovering from the “Electric Slide.” Our advice to couples: leave it to the professionals. But are these professionals live musicians or DJs?
Soul Man
“Music is a big part of the energy, especial-
ly during the last two hours of the evening,” says wedding planner Emily Hricko of Emily Elizabeth Events. She’s convinced that a live band is a matrimony must-have for contagious dance moves. Charles Brown, an icon in the Maine wedding band industry, isn’t so sure, even though he’s seen it all from every awkward father-daughter dance to rowdy great aunts. He started the Red Light Revue in 1986, a
rhythm-and-blues band that he fronted for four years. Then came Papa Loves Mambo, a “Caribbean-oriented powerhouse” which Brown started with Andrea Antognoni, his wife, in 1990. For ten years, they rocked hundreds of weddings all over the Northeast. But in his eyes, live wedding bands are being shoved (or maybe gently pushed) off stage. It’s likely he can play any song from any playlist. But ever the jokester, he asks in

his website, “Do you want your parents and their friends to enjoy it as much as you do? We play a bouncy swing sound that boots everyone on the dance floor, nine to ninety. You say Uncle Don wants to get up and sing ‘Danny Boy?’ He’s on next. It’s party time. Problem solved.” “Most people don’t use live music anymore,” he says. “It’s a generational thing— the Spotify Generation. They’d rather make a mix: exactly the tune they want, when they want it. If you have a band you like, you have to trust them, you know? And most people don’t do that anymore.”
Hey, Mr. DJ
ebecca Strout married last July in Hollis. She hired a DJ to “help with the flow of the night—directing people towards the reception, dinner, and first dances.” Wedding planner Kathleen Pacella of Fancy Figs in Brunswick, says “the appeal of hiring a DJ or having a personal playlist is the cost savings, hearing the originals, and a wider range in music genres. DJs can often source recorded versions of songs that might be really challenging for a band to perform live.” Megan McKenna, a 2020 bride-to-be, lives in Portland and teaches dance. “I’m

picky. I always wanted a DJ,” she says. “I like the idea that I can make a playlist and know exactly what I’ll be hearing.” She went to five weddings last year. All of them used DJs.

achel Sisson of R.L. Sisson Events, Southwest Harbor, agrees.- “Live bands tend to engage guests more and keep people on the dance floor. The dancing portion of the evening is often most important to many of my clients, so they hire a great band to keep the party going.” We don’t just want to dance. We want to be swept away. The Dapper Gents have been rocking weddings from Portland to Tampa for six years. Their favorite part is the energy of the reception. “Celebrating with a room of like-minded people is always a blast,” Jacob McCurdy, lead singer, says. He recalls a reception so lively it belongs in the fraternity comedy Animal House. “Last summer we played at one of our favorite wedding venues, Caswell Farm. It was a serious party. The crowd was brimming with energy—at one point they lit 50 sparklers and surprised the bride and groom with massive bottles of Champagne and rosé. Minutes felt like hours while they tried to find a bottle opener. Eventually, once the bottle was opened, an impromptu limbo contest broke out. That’s the first time I managed to do the limbo while playing guitar.” Now that’s one way to ring in a happily ever after. 5 2 p o r t l a n d m o n t h ly m a g a z i n e

Yet, there’s still something about a live band. The romance of a performance is unparalleled by even the most thought-out playlist. “Live bands infuse weddings with a ton of energy. They’re generally equipped to play all the current hits, and they can interact with guests in ways that a DJ cannot,” Pacella says.

So how do you keep the party going all night? “We play run-to-the-dance-floor classics like ‘Play that Funky Music’ and ‘Jesse’s Girl,’” says Time Pilots frontman Jon Goodman. “You recognize [them] the second you hear them, and they just make you want to dance!” “I’ve done so many weddings. Let me reflect,” says Cedric Jackson II, former singer in One Step Ahead Band. Bassist David Lebleu says it’s all about reading the audience. “We try to have fun ourselves, and we play the songs that get people up and moving around. Sometimes during the first set, during dinner, we can get away with songs that we love as musicians. It’s about finding songs that you love playing and that people recognize.” Johnna Dionne, manager of Wavelength, says, “We play an energetic and diverse song list that brings everybody to their feet.” She says the band is “versatile, comfortable per-

The Secret Joys of
Unwrapping Summer
Maine opens up with great excitement looking toward the season.

ur summers have seductive rhythms. Inhabiting a classic Maine summer cottage is a vivid experience with a cherished set of rituals. Kennebunk’s 49 Great Hill Road is a stunning example. Built in the “late 1800s” with a private beach out front and river frontage in back, today it’s for sale for $1.399M.
A Rose on the shore
Its interior is rustic beadboard. The sea sparkles in nearly all the rooms, including a grand salon with fireplace. Light follows into a generous dining room with built-ins that opens to the kitchen. Most magic of all, the cottage follows an enchanting rhythm where it’s winterized every year. The water is cut off, the furniture covered with spare white sheets, the windows boarded from storms and then unveiled every summer. In this unveiling ritual, the dusty sheets are carefully rolled off the ghostly slumbering furniture, to be taken outside for a wind bath. The winter’s salt glaze is carefully removed April 2019 79

er will fall in love with this house because they’re reminded of a childhood in Maine– maybe a camp they went to.” Or a sailing school with a boathouse, a great uncle’s cottage–a place out of the wind and safe from time. Old books conjure up multiple generations and a smell of the sea. The house is so close to the ocean it seems to rise and fall with the waves. We can almost smell the scent of blueberry muffins baking in the kitchen. What would it be like to walk your dog on your own beach? Steps away, the historic promontory Great Hill lifts high above sea level. For centuries it was a landmark to First Nations people and ships at sea. A famous privateer battle happened in front of this house. On May 19, 1813, during the War of 1812, the British sloop Rattler, in company with the schooner Bream, captured the American privateer Alexander as she headed to Salem. Run aground by the two British warships, the Alexander was seized and taken to New Brunswick, Canada, as a prize.

During college, you know, you miss a few years. I may have missed five, but I remember one year arriving before anyone else. It was pitch dark, around 11 p.m. I couldn’t see anything, but I remember walking through and knowing instinctively where all of the furniture was, where all of the lights were. It’s in my DNA.”

WE WERE DRIVING the coast, so to speak, I think maybe in a station wagon. He fell in love with wherever we went, and now he’d fallen in love with Maine. We talked excitedly in the car. We were looking for a house on the water. We did examine the place! We kept driving north along the water until I don’t really remember the name of the town. We went quite a ways up, actually, because it was so beautiful. To John, each place was more beautiful than the last." —Interview with Yoko Ono by Colin W. Sargent, Summerguide 2003.

e had this cat, his name was Stanley, but most of the time Jill called him Sweetheart. I tried to be friends with him. I honestly did—patting him on the head now and then. But he wouldn’t purr, giving me this look like he was wondering: What do you think you’re doing? Sometimes it made me just a little sick watching the two of them together—both of them purring. So I can’t say it broke my heart when Stanley developed a brain tumor. At first, Jill thought he was giving her the cold shoulder—standing there staring at the wall like that—and begged his forgiveness for whatever she had or hadn’t done. But after a while, it was clear something was wrong with the thing. The vet told her he probably wasn’t in any pain yet, so we kept him for the time being. But then he clearly was in pain, standing there trembling. Jill couldn’t bring him in, just couldn’t do it. I told her I’d be glad to. “Well, not glad,” I said. * The receptionist said she was very sorry. “About what?” She nodded at the carrier. “Oh. Right. Well.” I shrugged. She frowned at me. Evidently, she didn’t think I was sad enough. So I told her it wasn’t actually my cat, that Jill was a neighbor. “She couldn’t bring him in, just couldn’t do it,” I said with a sad face. “They were very close. She called him ‘Sweetheart.’ Can you imagine?” “Yes,” the woman said, “I can.” She told me to go take a seat. “Dr. Payson will be out shortly.” Bossy thing. I went over to the chairs. The only other person was an old woman with a blue parakeet in a cage on the floor

in front of her. I gave her a nod, set Stanley down, and picked out a People magazine from the coffee table. Oprah’s gotten fat again. Another Rocky movie’s coming out. I saw the first one with Jill on our very first date. I remember walking her home, discussing the movie. I remember how she held my arm. “Why doesn’t he turn around in there?” the old woman across from me asked. “He has enough room. Why doesn’t he face the other way so he can see out?” I told her quietly like I didn’t want Stanley to hear: “Brain tumor.” “Ohhh,” she said. “And does he have to be…?” I nodded sadly. “Poor thing,” she said. I agreed and went back to my magazine. There was a photo of Sylvester Stallone in a tutu and I couldn’t help it. I laughed out loud.
“You’re certainly taking it very well,” the old woman said. “It’s not actually my cat,” I said. “I’m doing this for a neighbor. What’s the matter with your bird?” “His name is Pretty Boy.” “What’s the matter with him?” She looked at him in there on his perch and sighed. “He stopped singing. I don’t know why.” “Maybe he doesn’t feel like it. I sure wouldn’t feel like singing if I was locked in a cage, especially if I was a bird. Birds like to fly around.” “Please stop.” She was close to tears. I went back to my magazine. Dr. Payson came out in a long white coat like a real doctor and went to the front desk. The receptionist pointed at me, and he came walking over, but the parakeet lady stood up and told him about Pretty Boy not singing for three days straight. “Not a single note, Doctor!”

Fiction Dr. Payson promised to take a good look at Pretty Boy, right after he attended to this gentleman and his cat. “I don’t understand,” she said. “I was here first.” “But his appointment is before yours, Mrs. Donovan.” “I don’t think he would mind letting me go ahead of him,” she said and looked at me. “Would you?” “To be honest, I would,” I told her. She’d be hours in there. Dr. Payson said if I wished to I could stay with Stanley during the procedure. I said, “Thanks, but it’s not actually my cat. I’m just doing this for a neighbor.” He nodded—I don’t think he believed me— and took the carrier into the back. I returned to my magazine. But I could feel the old lady staring at me. “Yes?” I said politely. “You could have at least stayed with the poor thing.” She was just mad at me for not letting her go first. “Try and comfort him in his final moments.”

eanwhile, I noticed Pretty Boy starting to wobble around on his perch like a drunk. Then, right while I was looking, he dropped to the floor of the cage and laid there, claws up. “Ma’am.” I pointed. She looked, then stood and started hollering for Dr. Payson. The receptionist ran off to get him, but he was already hurrying out. “He’s dead! Pretty Boy is dead!” the old woman sobbed. Dr. Payson and the receptionist tried to get her to calm down, or at least sit down, but she just stood there carrying on. Then she looked at me. “If only you had let me go first! If only you had let me!” Dr. Payson and the receptionist looked at me, too. All three of them stood there looking at me. I got the hell out of there. They could keep the carrier. We wouldn’t be needing it anymore. If Jill wanted someone to call Sweetheart, here I was, right in front of her, arms wide. n
