e’re going to have to use our imaginations to get through these holidays. No worries—we Mainers have got this. Kennebunkport’s own chanteuse, Jane Morgan, sang “C’est si bon” (“It’s so good”) with Bing Crosby on General Electric Theater in 1953 (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ECDGQhDnpAA) and recorded it as a solo in 1964. She turned 96 this year, and we love to think of her safely sheltering in her charming yellow house, Blueberry Hill Farm, which she’s owned since 1958. We even think we saw her car in the driveway today. Let’s discover the good we can do together. Give it a Maine spin and say, “It’s all good,” if you like. Until now, there’s never really been a perfect wine pairing with lobster. It’s a big secret among foodies. Sure, chardonnays and pinot grigios are enthusiastically marketed with lobster-claw labels, but who cares, now that we have lobster and cannabis? See our story “Near & Dear” on page 21, where we present lucid arguments to support inspirations for luminous bubbles with exquisite distancing. Seven ideas. Try them all at once. If you’re living in the Zoom universe, don’t despair. The Exquisite Corpse is an old Parisian drinking game that gets us from here to there via the internet. The Surrealists loved it. Andre Breton was an early player; Henry Miller took it up in the 1930s. Legendary Maine photographer Berenice Abbott likely played it when she joined Man Ray’s circle. One person suggests the first line of a story. Then the next person provides the second line, ad infinitum. It’s beauty by committee existing magically between a constellation of Zoom portals. If you don’t take to this as a drinking game, then substitute piña-colada-flavored Oreos. I’ve already tested this with my creative writing students at William & Mary, so it gets a thumbs-up from the 21st century. Whatever you do, reach out safely (which means virtually). Experience the Christmas tree in Monument Square in proper balaclavas—an arm’s length apart but with hearts together. Smile with your eyes. Take a night drive along the coast to see the bracelets of lights along the shore as you wave to fellow drivers. If you feel Zoom games are nothing but making things up as you go along, you’re absolutely right. That’s what we do. The trivial is essential. So are laughter and kindness. During these holidays, in our separate bubbles, let’s get together.

Committed to providing valuable and personalized burial, cremation, and prearrangement services.

Kudos to the Lighthouse My November [2020] issue arrived today, and talk about a cover that makes you open the magazine! Wow. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, I was a consultant to a large trade journal publisher. I held seminars on a lot of topics, one being cover design and the importance of getting readers into the magazine. This is one of the best I have ever seen. The other one was a cover for Design News (an engineering magazine, and one of my clients). They ran a cover with Barbie on the front, and the issue focused on plastics technologies. The most-read issue in the history of the magazine (and the most controversial). Readers either loved it or hated it; no middle ground. But apparently everyone went to the lead article. Charles H. Sides, Ph.D., Fitchburg State University

Pleasing Notes Many thanks for [“Centuries of Sound,” September 2020]. I was particularly pleased to see The Pierre Monteux School and Music Festival mentioned, as I have enjoyed concerts there for the last 16 years. Our beloved Maestro, Michael Jinbo, is celebrating his 25th anniversary this year. He follows in the footsteps of Pierre Monteux and Charles Bruck as music directors of the school. Joann Williams, Winter Harbor “The Minstrel” Thank you so much for [“Wild Child,” April 2010] about such a great songwriter and musician. I am a big fan and continue to enjoy all my Fogelberg records! Nancy Russell, Cincinnati, OH

Let’s Talk.

We were driving the coast, so to speak, I think maybe in a station wagon. He fell in love with wherever we went, and now he’d fallen in love with Maine. We talked excitedly in the car. We were looking for a house on the water. We did examine the place! We kept driving north along the water until I don’t really remember the name of the town. We went quite a ways up, actually, because it was so beautiful. To John, each place was more beautiful than the last." —Interview with Yoko Ono by Colin W. Sargent, Summerguide 2003.

Our daily struggle with digital over-stimulation is continuous and real. With emails, pop-up ads, and notifications, we are often in sensory overload. Reading a print publication is a focused experience outside of the digital realm. Printed content has tested better with brand recall than digital, and is easier on the eyes. Bottom line: printed publications provide readers with a meaningful and memorable experience.

Cummings Printing is a third-generation familyowned company specializing in printing highquality, short-run publications. At each phase of the print process, they provide a humantouch that is unmatched by the competition. We help you create compelling publications so your readers truly understand the allure of the printed word.

After closing in 2015, Rangeley’s Saddleback Mountain is back, and general manager Andy Shepard hopes “Mainers will embrace winter fully. It’s more important than ever for people to get outdoors. Come with a sense of adventure, a sense of humor, and a heavy dose of kindness.”

Fashion

From Away If you’re wondering what to wear on Portland’s 4th Annual Ugly Sweater Crawl (see What’s Playing, p. 18), you need look no further. This Bean boot mashup from metro-preppy designer Todd Snyder may be the one item that makes Mainers stop lamenting the lapse of L. L. Bean’s lifetime guarantee.

A Hopeful Sign The iconic “Hopeful” building at 630 Forest Avenue is on the market for $1.2M, but Jocelyn Lee of Speedwell Projects assures fans of artist Charlie Hewitt’s retro marquee rooftop sculpture, “The businesses here will all remain, and Hopeful is on our building indefinitely.” Its big sister graces the side of Bates Mill No. 5 in Lewiston.

Out of the Woods The Falmouth Land Trust has bought 52 acres for preservation—now dubbed Underwood Springs Forest—in Falmouth Foreside for $750K. Executive director Jennifer Grimm says, “The name made sense knowing the history of Underwood Spring and its former water bottling company [the Underwood Spring Corporation (1909–1926)],” which bottled water, sodas, and tonics. “There is a big underground aquifer under the whole area, and those waters feed Norton Brook on the conservation property. The water was believed to have amazing properties.” So amazing that a vial of Underwood Spring water won the Grand Prix Gold Medal at the 1911 Paris Exposition, the highest award ever given to table water. Me and My Bubble: Stay cozy and confined in a cliffside igloo at the Cliff House in Cape Neddick. Order food and drink from Nubb’s Lobster Shack or get the Classic Package for $275 with “a wonderful savory and sweet fondue experience” and spiked (or not) hot chocolate. Open Fridays and Saturdays for hotel guests only: 361-1000. The Kennebunkport Inn has installed gondolas and igloos open to both the public and hotel guests. Reservations required for 1 hour, with a $100 food and beverage minimum: 967-2621. Gone Fishin’: Putting a Maine angle on pandemic dining, Batson River Tasting Room has erected four heated ice-fishing shacks outside their building in Kennebunkport that seat pods of six diners ($20 for 90 minutes). While you’re there, stock up on their housemade hand sanitizer ($18.95/16 oz.). Reservations recommended: 967-8821.

Frosty Fitness: The Rink at Thompson’s Point is still rocking this winter ($8 for unlimited all-day skating, $3 for hockey skate rental), with appropriate precautions: Visitors must wear a mask at all times and keep a safe distance from others, with no heated spaces this year. “B

etween the 1870s and the onset of the Great Depression, Boothbay Harbor and its neighboring towns experienced an explosion of growth due to seasonal visitors. Hotels, cottages, cabins, and intentional ‘colonies’ combining the three were built to accommodate the visitors on the edges of the town and along the forested and rocky shore. Sprucewold was a colony of cabins, hotel, dining hall, and recreational facilities located on the previously undeveloped Spruce Point on the west side of Linekin Bay. The original Lodge, built 28 p o r t l a n d magazine

in 1926, burned just four years later, but from that point forward the former Annex and a nearby cabin were transformed into a popular and lasting hostelry. Constructed in the Adirondack log cabin style, these two buildings and their associated service buildings have served both the summer colony and tourists from afar for 82 years… [Sprucewold is] a rare surviving example of a type of Adirondack-style log building that was popular for resort architecture in the 1920s in Maine.” —National Park Service, National Register of Historic Places

After the original lodge burned down in 1930, the annex became the resort’s main building.

Bedrooms: 1 Getting there: “Prior to 1980, accessing the cabin involved parking a vehicle and driving a Model T about a mile and crossing a low part of the Narraguagus River. Then after parking the Model T, people carried their gear through the woods to the lakeshore. From there, people put their gear into a canoe and paddled across the lake. Later, after years of logging and new roads, today’s access just requires 4 miles of dirt roads and 1/3 mile hike.” n

“ I am a native of Maine going back three generations. I retired as an attorney in 1995 and came to The Park Danforth in 2009 along with Ellie, my wife of 58 years. Ellie and I were originally living in a market rate apartment and we couldn’t have been happier. I lost Ellie in 2017 and moved to a government subsidized apartment at The Park Danforth about a year later. One of the appeals of The Park Danforth was the ability for me to remain in this lovely community with friendly people even though my situation had changed. The staff have been super attentive, and I have never regretted moving to The Park Danforth. My only advise to other people considering a move to The Park Danforth is…Don’t Wait! ”

Feast of Love A tragic holiday menu surfaces from a sunken Liberty ship. By Colin W. Sarg ent

two members of the ship’s crew from the John A. Poor.

T

he Liberty Ship John A. Poor was named for the plucky Maine railroad executive who linked train service between Portland and Montreal. To demonstrate to Montreal that we were a closer seaport for them than Boston, and that the mountains and rivers between us could be covered, he traveled by sleigh through a blizzard from here to there, astonishing the Montreal Board of Trade. Imagine the imposing figure of Poor stalking into their conference room, brushing off snow. Local heroes inspire Liberty ships. A big crowd cheered as the SS John A. Poor splashed into the Fore River in 1943 at New England Shipbuilding in South Portland. Talk about a hometown favorite.

Flash forward to the spring of 1944. On March 19, the German submarine U-510, captained by Kapitänleutnant Alfred Eick, steals within torpedo distance of the Liberty ship and sinks her at coordinates “13° 58’N, 70° 30’E.” Google Maps spins to the Arabian Sea when you enter this position. The Poor was traveling in the Gulf of Aden, south of Yemen, north of Somalia, east of Djibouti. I was there myself in 1980, as a Navy helicopter pilot aboard the USS Kalamazoo. I was engaged to my sweetheart, just dreaming of coming home. During lonely moments, I peered down from the flight deck into the water, where something was stirring. Sharks and sea snakes? I doubt if anyone ever called the Gulf of Aden “Vacationland.” According to wreck.eu, the John

A. Poor was “en route from Karachi [capital of the Pakistani province of Sindh] and Cochin [southwest India],” heading toward the Suez Canal en route to the United States, when the torpedoes hit. “One day later, the freighter Fort Worth rescued survivors.” Casualties were “34 dead, 39 survivors,” according to uboat.net. One of the drowned and never found was newlywed Navy Reservist Seaman Kenneth Eugene Noble of Kennebunk. His bride, Arvilla Francis Noble, lived on High Street, Kennebunk. Here, they celebrate their wedding: newspaperarchive.com/biddeforddaily-journal-jul-15-1943-p-5/ MISSING MY BIG BROTHER “Are you legit?” is the first thing Kenneth Noble’s younger sister, Martha Noble Wilson, December 2020 35

Did you visit the newlyweds at their High Street house before he set sail? “I’ve been in the High Street house. It was white at the time I was there, with two stories. I still have them.” Did you keep in touch with Arvilla afterward? “She remarried and left the area. Now she’s passed away. I think of Chuck sometimes. Little sister, you know. For fun, we used to go to the movies on Main Street in Kennebunk. There wasn’t much else to do! His hobbies were dancing, swimming, hockey.” She’s silent a few seconds. Maybe she’s pondering the menu. How long does it take for a wistful tear to travel from southern Maine to the Gulf of Aden? “You’ve caught me at a strange time. I don’t know what to say.”

WE’RE ALL SEARCHING Internet discovery is skin diving. While researching details of John Poor’s old house going up for sale (“The House of Mirth,” MaineGuide 2020), we bumped into his namesake Liberty ship and couldn’t resist diving into the wreck. Kenneth Noble and his shipmates on the Poor swam into view. By-catch. My heart froze when their lost menu, disconnected from the disaster, turned up on eBay. What a chill to see exactly what they tore into on Christmas Day. Reading it, we all become crewmembers aboard the Poor through the ether, at least for a few heartbeats. No one’s doomed. We’re all heroes. Shipmates, here’s a toast to you! n

aine’s real estate market is in overdrive. Buyers are applying for mortgages at rapid-fire speed, eager to be first in line when the house of their dreams hits the market. They’re ready to nest in homes large enough for remote work and schooling—and they’re ready now. Who’s who? According to Tom Cole, president of the Maine Association of Realtors, “The housing market statewide is the strongest we’ve ever seen. Typically, about 25 percent of home purchases in Maine are made by outof-state buyers, and we’re seeing that percentage increase to around 33 percent. The association has pushed very hard, along with Congressman Jared Golden, to have more access to broadband across the state because of the potential for more remote work. It’s a real driver for out-of-state buyers who have thought about moving here for a while. Our most recent data shows our majority of out-of-state buyers were from DECember 2020 41

D o l l a r s & Se nse Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Florida, California, New Jersey, and Connecticut.” Scott Lindner, national sales director for TD Bank Mortgage, says, “We’re seeing an overall migration from the cities to more rural and suburban areas. TD recently conducted a national survey, ‘The Stay-atHome Effect on Housing,’ of 1,009 Americans to discover how the stay-at-home orders have impacted consumers’ perceptions of their current living spaces. Thirty-nine percent of city dwellers said they want a larger living space, 28 percent wanted more outdoor space, and 38 percent wanted to spend less on their living situation.”

G

orham Savings Bank chief credit officer Eric Andrews says, “Some people are definitely relocating to Maine—buyers moving to escape COVID-19 who can do so because they now work from home. We’re also seeing millennials finally entering the home-buying market. Those buying their second homes have remained a consistent market for us, and that demographic is more from Generation X and boomers.” According to Genie L. Smith, area lending manager for Northern New England at Bank of America, “Many of our clients are from other areas of the country, purchasing primary and second homes. They have recognized how desirable Maine is for living and raising a family.” A numbers game. Darci Hamm, EVP, senior retail banking officer at Norway Savings Bank, says, “We began 2020 expecting rates to start increasing over the year. But that’s not what happened. Mortgage rates have been, and continue to be, at record lows, which has spurred a great deal of interest from people looking to purchase a home, construct a home, or refinance a mortgage to take advantage of the lower rates.” “Closings for us have more than doubled this year. The number of loans is up by about 65 percent,” says Andrews. “There’s very little inventory on the market right now, and it’s been driving prices higher. The median sales price in Maine is up by 20 percent at $270K for the average buyer.” The median sales price in Maine for 2019 was $230K. “The only saving grace is the interest rates. According to Fred-

From the third quarter of 2020 through the end of 2021, we forecast mortgage rates to remain unchanged at 3 percent.” What’s the rush? “The number of houses available is down roughly 40 percent from a year ago,” Cole says. “Typically, we’d expect about five months to sell a house on average, statewide. Now we’ve dipped down to about two-and-a-half months.” Lindner says, “With a housing market that is so competitive, buyers really need to

Additionally, during COVID, we were fortunate to use some of our experienced lenders as additional resources to keep the pipeline flowing. The entire retail lending team has worked tirelessly over 2020—many long days, nights, and weekends.” “If you’re approaching a lender for financing now,” Andrews says, “be prepared. you’re structuring a closing contract to buy, make sure it’s not only a 30-day contract. We’ve seen some really short time frames come in. Negotiate a reasonable time frame. Realistically, right now, that’s 60 days plus.” Looking forward. OVID delayed the purchase market this year. What usually would be a spring purchase market got pushed into summer and fall, and we’re still seeing it,” Andrews says. “Typically, we see the market slow down around the holidays as people are away traveling. But this year, I think we could see it sustained.” Cole says, “We have an incredible chief economist with the National Association of Realtors®, Dr. Lawrence Yun. Based on his projections, we think there will be a strong market going into 2021. We have a tight inventory combined with low interest rates, which is a tremendous incentive to make a purchase now. The general feeling is that 2021 looks good—for many reasons in addition to the housing market.” n

here’s something Christmassy about lobster. Don’t ask us why! On a brisk wintry evening, we pull up to Maine Diner in Wells to give it a try curbside. Then we rush our takeout home for a romantic dinner fireside. Here are some presents to unwrap! The first is a half order of homemade Onion Rings ($3.50), my carnival favorite. My requirements are precise: thin but not too thin, so lightly battered it’s more of a dusting, and oh so tasty. Well, these are the best onion rings I’ve had in at least a decade. Maybe ever. Seafood Chowder is some restaurants’ way of saying “anything but lobster.” It’s just the opposite here! Shrimp also stars in this dish, as well as the scrumptious chowder broth–deep, authentic, perfect. A cup is $6.95.

Because it’s Saturday night, we order a mouth-watering special, the Yankee Pot Roast. It’s tender, delicious. The Butternut Squash that accompanies it makes a zesty, colorful pairing for the chilly weather. The Lobster Pie (market price) amazes with so much sweet, luscious meat. Wonderful! We decide to order some for Christmas Eve near and far, because this represents Maine as few products can. And it ships from Maine Diner to all points of the compass. It might as well be Santa’s sleigh delivering the best lobster pie on Earth. In case you’re wondering, this is a major thumbs-up. You already know what we had for dessert: Homemade Maine Blueberry Pie. Here’s a scoop: share a slice ($4.25) like we did and eat it à la mode. Cost for the meal, including tip, is $70.76. n December 2020 47

“Death to the Dracu grandson!” In terror, Iordana Ceausescu of Romania disappeared in secret to Old Orchard Beach with her son while the world searched for them. She lived a buried life among us for five years. Drawn from 800 hours of unique interviews with Iordana. Colin W. Sargent’s Red Hands—“an astounding account of the Romanian revolution in the voice of Ceausescu’s daughter-in-law.” –Martin Goodman in the Morning Star “Brilliant. If the novel is Macbeth then it is Romeo and Juliet too, for the pounding heart of the book is a great love story that never fails to move. A tale from last century and a warning for this one, Red Hands is a novel of rare power that teaches us much about Romania and even more about ourselves.” –D. D. Johnston

re these good?” “They’re dry, yes, but we’ll need more.” A bundle of twigs fell from Puck’s small hands to the ground. “How many more?” “How long do you want this fire to last?” “A long time!” “So how many more sticks?” “Many!” Mum nodded, and off ran Puck into the veil of dusk that was quickly becoming dark. Mum placed the sticks in a neat row just outside the circle of stones and watched the disappearing figure of her daughter scrounging for more. At a certain point, children transcend knowing things, like words and numbers, and begin to understand reason and consequence. This marker in time is less related to age in years than it is to experience. That was where Puck had arrived. “Hurry, we’ll lose the light soon,” Mum called in the direction of Puck’s rustling hands and feet. A pause, then a grunt from Puck exerting a child’s brute strength. Back she came, arms full of sticks. “Great,” said Mum. “Line them all up like so.” She pointed to the sticks already laid out on the ground. This time, instead of letting them drop, Puck bent down, knowing these sticks, im-

permanent as they might be, were still deserving of respect. She placed them side by side. “Flint?” Mum asked. Puck took an irregularly faceted stone from her vest pocket. “Steel?” Mum smiled as she, in turn, produced a narrow metal C. “Can I strike it?” There was a pang to Puck’s voice that told she already knew the answer. She’d never been allowed to before, though she always asked. The answer had forever been a solid, yet sweet, not yet. “First,” Mum said, “pile in the leaves.” Not the response Puck expected. She scooped together two handfuls of dry leaves by her feet and placed them in the center of the ring of rocks. “Now the sticks,” said Mum, and Puck built around the leaves a cone of twigs pointed at the now deep blue sky. She added a second cone of bigger sticks around the first, as Mum had taught her years before. Mum nodded. “Yes.” She extended the C-shaped steel to Puck. Puck’s hand gave a dip with the weight of the metal. Always the carrier of the flint, she never thought the steel would weigh more. She looked at her mother and knew not to ask when. “Now, Puck, we found sticks, we piled leaves, we built up the sticks.” Puck stood at the ready, flint and steel poised to strike each other. Her mother said, “But once this fire is lit, it’s not to be squandered. In this blaze is the power to bring people together. To warm them, to feed them, to protect them from the dark. And with this knowledge comes a trust that it will be shared. So share it as you have received it.” Puck stared at her mother, knowing what every word meant and understanding that this was not the last step, but the first of many to come. “Ready?” Puck knelt. She slashed the stone and steel at each other toward the kindling, where a spark quickly turned into a nimble orange flame. n
