elcome to our 2021 Maine Art Annual and Fall Guide! While we were curating images for our “Maine Artists at Auction” highlights, I was stunned by this painting by Marsden Hartley. It snuck up on me like a daydream. Kurt Vonnegut might say the shell is “unstuck in time.” How could Marsden Hartley in 1929 (Tom Petty wrote “Free Falling” in 1989) have known the secret to connecting with me in 2021, when all of us feel like we’ve been cut from our moorings? Because your shell knows a lot of my secrets, Marsden, if I may. I admit it was a guilty pleasure to feel comforted by a comprehensible universe growing up in Portland, Maine, when every Wednesday was Prince Spaghetti Night. Looking for the truth? We had the Press Herald in the a.m. and the Evening Express in the p.m. On TV we watched NBC on Channel 6, ABC on Channel 8, and CBS on Channel 13. You knew it was time to go to sleep when Johnny Carson or David Letterman said good night. Now there are a zillion channels. Digital insomnia. We don’t have to be together as an audience to experience this. We stream through amorphous time, like the background of this shell. Privately, this frightens me. Soothe me, Shell, don’t smooth me. You knew all of this when Marsden Hartley painted you, Shell. So to me you are beautifulscary, ahead of your time. You love to disturb, to keep us awake. To reward you, we have committed the rare—some say extreme—act of printing you on paper in a magazine and giving you to thoughtful readers who are trying to figure it all out as the universe rockets forward. The whole partying at the barn aspect of Walsh’s story is so believable, yet also suspect. And the photo of the Margaret Todd at sunset [“You Only Live Once”] is spectacular. Kudos to Creative Portland for understanding that the world is our canvas and inviting local artists Pam Chevez, Ebenezer Akakpo, Angela Adams, Tamara Jones, and Norah Tryon to jazz up very pedestrian barricades in the Old Port.

The Two Ann(e)s

Portland Magazine intern Anne Stevens was already working on our “Dream Islands” story when the coincidence surfaced: an earlier Ann Stephens had founded the original Portland Magazine in 1834. Did 21st-century Anne feel a spooky correspondence? “I checked into her. She invented the dime novel and was fascinated by ‘outposts of a darker world.’” Cool.

Quickly, he showed us that low tide is a mark of beauty and a fishing village is the center of the universe. Locals loved his knowing brushstrokes, his lust for beauty and spirits, his penchant for a good horse trade. COLOR MY WORLD Memorably one summer, he painted the walls of the Colony Hotel’s smoking room as a swap for food and drink. They are still luminous and on display in what is now the gift shop. In 1930, as a gift to the “youth of Kennebunkport,” he decorated the secondfloor junior library at the Louis T. The diminutive atelier was moved from its original perch and now stands in the Society’s parking lot; visitors enjoy the singular privilege of being able to peek into the impressionist’s pre-war world and see what he saw, including wall murals that capture his state of mind.

What do you think the lure of Turbats Creek was for Louis Norton?

I don’t know what the lure was for Norton. Is he at his best in pastels? Why was that medium such a good match for him?

His pastels are wonderful, but his oils are too. Pastel is less expensive than oil—fast and durable.

LOVE SHACK prize exhibit at Kennebunkport Historical Society is the rough-and-tumble painter’s shack Norton kept at Turbats Creek in the 1920s and 1930s. Here, he dashed off heathery pastels and oils of 22 P O R T L A N D MAGAZINE

The late Richard Hennessey, former owner of the nearby Shawmut Inn (at Turbats Creek), caught the Louis Norton bug early in his career as a hotelier and amassed a legendary private collection of his pastels, oils, and watercolors—over one hundred in all. We were lucky to catch up with the pithy Hennessey and his remarkable collection just weeks before his death last September. As I re-read his careful answers, many masterworks of understatement—barely winks of the eye—I miss his sense of humor. –Ed.

How many Norton pastels of the wreck of the Wandby do you own?

Kennebunkport and Norton’s capturing so beautifully its landscape and buildings, the ocean and sky, and the people.

Who in the Kennebunks really cares about Louis Norton? Richard Keating of J. J. Keating Auctioneers?

Kennebunkers speak affectionately (they probably shouldn’t) about the cliché of Norton’s enjoying a drink, being in his cups sometimes.

Two.

The Brick Store Museum, perhaps. We know of no individuals. (But maybe Colin W. Sargent!)

Did he have a dark side that made him need to rely on alcohol?

o “dark side” to our knowledge. He was poor—the “starving artist” cliché.

Did Frank Small, owner of the Shawmut Inn before you, appreciate your appreciation for Louis Norton? The Shawmut was like the Emerald City of Turbats Creek.

Whose private collection of Louis Nortons comes closest to yours?

He owned a few and probably competed with me for some. After his death in 1974, Susan and I purchased the Shawmut and a couple of Nortons from the estate.

You must feel a personal affinity for Norton as a person, a talent. Tell us about that.

Have you ever seen a Louis Norton pastel of South Congregational Church near the post office in Kennebunkport?

No idea.

What’s the Louis Norton pastel that got away from you as a collector? Where is it?

One of an old farmhouse on Kings Highway. It’s in Wells. Did Louis Norton do the murals in the house across the street from the Graves Memorial Library to settle a debt?

I don’t know. We have seen them and have a portrait of Mrs. Herbert Luques, who I think was the owner at the time. Would Kenneth Roberts or Margaret Deland? Who were Louis Norton’s famous local friends?

ew Yorkers have been wining and dining streetside in their puffer coats, which in terms of grit and perseverance reminds me of living in Maine,” says Sage Lewis, a close observer of her new world. “I moved to Brooklyn in 2018, and the hardest thing to adjust to here is that it doesn’t get cooler in the evenings during the summer. My former roommate moved out, but we meet up to do outdoor yoga in Fort Greene Park every Saturday, then hit the farmer’s market. I decided not to post for a new roommate for the time being and turn the spare room into my studio space so I don’t need to rent a separate studio. LESSONS LEARNED NAVIGATING THE CITY “Survival skills? Carrying an extra cardigan is a waste of valuable space in my bag! You need to carry snacks and know where the good bathrooms are. And when you start to get that glazed look in your eyes running er-

rands, get thee to the subway home. “I have two cats and a full-time job as a Client Services Manager for an art logistics company, Atelier Fine Art Services. Many of my clients are museums we work with to coordinate the packing, crating, and transport of exhibition loans. Thankfully, I don’t need to work a second job. We live in Queens, but I can’t divulge our specific neighborhood: predatory real-estate companies are attempting to ‘develop’ this area, and artists are often seen as harbingers of rent hikes and displacement. “I currently have three jobs. I teach drawing and painting as an Adjunct Lecturer at Drew University in New Jersey during the school year. I also run Titan and Weald, a letterpress printing and publishing enterprise. And I occasionally do some freelance IT work. Rent is definitely the biggest expense, but art supplies and health insurance premiums are also a huge burden on self-employed artists. One has to learn to be flexible and change plans at the drop of a hat. An ideal day would include some studio time in the morning, work for the press in the afternoon, and a relaxing evening. I always think I can do more than I actually can each week. “In NYC there are hundreds of art shows to see at any moment, more professional opportunities for artists, more established social services that can benefit artists, more unions art workers can join, and stronger laws protecting tenants. But finding a place to live and work can be a harrowing experience. “When I lived in Portland from 1994 to 2003, it was an affordable, bohemian city where leather-clad snake enthusiasts gathered in Post Office Park (their snakes liked the warm rocks) and a man in the Old Port read Shakespeare to his dog. Many of my more narrative-based paintings and prints attempt to capture the spirit of these individuals. The brick buildings of Portland and the landscape of the surrounding forests and fields and coast frequently appear in my work. Pre-pandemic I went back every six to eight weeks to collaborate with my colleagues at Wolfe Editions, a print shop in Portland.”

What Applin misses most about New York on these trips is “Tibetan momos for breakfast. What I miss most about Maine in NYC is the sharp, crisp light and swimming at Ferry Beach.”

The first month I was teaching at RISD, I was also an artist-in-residence at the Baltimore Jewelry Center. From there it was an eight-hour trip to stay over in an Airbnb in Providence, teach for six hours, drive down to New York, sleep over at my grandmother's house, and then drive back down to Baltimore and return to the studio to work! It was completely unsustainable, but I was grateful for the work. “My emotional and mental health was wavering after two years of low pay without a stable schedule.” She took the plunge and moved full time to a loft apartment in East Williamsburg.

Most people visit Maine in the summer, and while summer is glorious, winter is when much of the real living happens. “In 2017 MECA awarded me a residency at the Pace House, and I was able to spend a lot of time photographing Stonington and Schoodic Point. The time I’ve spent exploring Maine’s rocky coast is embedded in much of the imagery I’m producing in the studio. I miss that cold, wild ocean. I’m not far from beaches in New York, but it’s not at all the same.” As for what is the same, “Native New Yorkers and native Mainers both like to tell you that they were born there.”

SPARKLE IN HAND “At the end of June, I began a new fulltime job as Sales and Repair Coordinator at Greenwich Street Jewelers. Now that I don’t work in an academic or studio atmosphere, I find myself in an identity crisis. However, this is the first time in my life I get sustainable pay and health insurance, and I’m grateful to finally work somewhere that wants their employees to have enough money to buy groceries and pay rent on time. “After preparing coffee and walking my pup, I’ll head out to the L train to transfer to the R/W at Union Square. I spend my day at work communicating with our in-house jewelers, production director, insurance companies, and clients about completing jewelry repairs or re-styling older pieces. “After work looks like having dinner with my guy and letting my dog run loose with the other building dogs on the rooftop overlooking the Manhattan skyline. I have a little chihuahua named Honey. “My favorite neighborhood spot is my building rooftop. I love to host. A simpler schedule has opened me up to resume a more normal social life and feel more free

A RT I ST S AT WORK when I'm in the studio. Now the studio work is really for me—not my CV. “I try to return to Portland once a year to say hi. I miss the East End Promenade and Miyake. When I see Cat Bates bracelets and necklaces on humans around New York, it always puts a smile on my face. “When I landed in Portland, I was taught that wherever your path led you, the collective ‘we’ was going to support you. Knowing that you live somewhere that is vocal about wanting you to succeed is a great motivator. It's a confidence I'm not sure I would have found attending a different school or living in a different city.

“W

ith New York, you really gotta fight for your space, and that takes a long time—or meeting the right people. The luckiest break I've had as an artist was my solo show, the figure of the falling, at Brooklyn Metal Works. My BFA thesis at MECA was a sculptural exploration in memory, burden, and scale—with metal sculptures up to six feet tall. After MECA, moving those sculptures around became too challenging for one person and I had to ask myself how I could make a sustainable studio lifestyle. Now my pieces are much smaller—at jewelry scale—and I keep a small studio in my apartment. “I’m happy to say I was open-minded about how my life could look. I knew I wanted to work really hard in a field I was passionate about, and that’s what I have!”

y first apartment in Bed-Stuy [Bedford-Stuyvesant] was close to the A/C and the G train. I moved to New York in February of 2020— impeccable timing on my part. I got a new place this year in Bushwick near the Morgan Avenue L train stop. I live with my girlfriend and two other roommates. I haven't needed a car in about seven years, even in Portland. “I chose to go for the big apartment/ home studio strategy instead of paying for studio space elsewhere. Other artists I know don't seem to have much trouble finding affordable studio space, especially after COVID. Sometimes I’ll head up to the rooftops to paint en plein air, but mostly I reserve that for traveling.

LOVING TWO WORLDS eing an artist in NYC can feel very competitive and challenging at times, while in Maine there’s a bit more freedom to relax and refocus. Being around lots of contemporary art is a perk you can really only get in NYC, but I’m an art history fanatic, so the Met is my go-to. Vermeer’s a must-see every time! “I haven't been back up to Maine since moving down here, but we’re planning a visit within the next year. I miss the air and the trees mostly. Also Ruski’s in Portland— the best bar in Maine. “A lot of imagery I recycle centers around New England post-industrial suburbs, so my time in Maine will always have an influence on my work. I truly think that without the professors I had at MECA, I couldn't be here today. Other than getting off of drugs and going to college, I would say that working full time and maintaining an art practice is the number-one challenge for any artist who doesn't already have the funds to support themselves. “I currently work at Downing Frames in

Elijah River Dion’s meditations on apathy exalt the interstitial downtimes skimmed over by storylines. Long Island City, where we frame works for blue-chip and mid-tier galleries across the city. This job alone covers the bills while I’m building up a body of work. I've reached a kind of flow where if I’m working at the frame shop, I’ll be there till 5 p.m., commute on the train (it’s really so much better to bring a book), make or grab some dinner, and draw in the evening. On the days where I’m not at the frame shop, I will generally be in my studio working on larger-scale paintings. “The hardest thing to adjust to in New York is eight million people living on top of each other in such a small area. New Yorkers always have someplace to be. Mainers take their time.” n

NOTIFICATIONS Our daily struggle with digital over-stimulation is continuous and real. With emails, pop-up ads, and notifications, we are often in sensory overload. Reading a print publication is a focused experience outside of the digital realm. Printed content has tested better with brand recall than digital, and is easier on the eyes. Bottom line: printed publications provide readers with a meaningful and memorable experience. Cummings Printing is a third-generation family-owned company specializing in printing high-quality, shortrun publications. At each phase of the print process, they provide a human-touch that is unmatched by the competition. We help you create compelling publications so your readers truly understand the allure of the printed word. cummingsprinting.com

he race is on! Where can we find a fast-turnaround bistro to grab a bite before catching a show at Jonathan's? Why not dine at the seafood restaurant with the best view on Perkins Cove? Who are we kidding? Because it’s a perfect night, Ogunquit traffic is crawling at a snail’s pace, and the lively streets are naturally filled with a jillion revelers. It’s easy to catch the fever, but it’s nearly 8 p.m.! Before we call the whole thing off, news flash: At 8 p.m. parking right beside Jackie’s Too, owned by Jackie Bevins, is free. Feeling slightly dazed by our luck, we sit down at outdoor tables under a tent with panoramic views of the waves, rocks, and some lucky tourists venturing onto the Marginal Way cliff walk. Our gracious server wears a black T-shirt with the message “Be nice.” We know she's nice. I hope she isn't referring to me! We order a Dark and Stormy and a Basil Lemonade made with Tito’s Vodka and elderflower liqueur. As we sip, a private sloop with its nav lights on ducks behind a

peninsula where some people are climbing on the rocks, dressed for an Old Navy commercial. Don't you love September, with the delicious chill in the air? Sweater weather. We order Bacon & Blue Cheese Broiled Scallops with baked potato. There's no way I'm coming in here without ordering the Clams with Fries & Cole Slaw. The batter is so airy and perfect I'm starting to take credit for planning the whole evening. There’s plenty of room under the tent for everyone to keep their distance. Inside, the reception area near the entrance has the look of a sports bar. Except sports bars don't have views like this. Now the sloop is back and the Finestkind tour boat is out there sharing the view with us. Not only did we beat the rush, we enjoy the rush as we watch the Marginal Way party of strollers come back in for a landing. Against all odds we make the show! On the way out, there are eight parking spots wide open just steps from the door. Our little secret, okay? n

A Lifetime Movie waiting to happen: As reported by the Washington Post and Seacoastonline, in 1991 Portland’s Dan Lilley—Maine’s answer to Johnnie Cochran—pioneered the first successful battered-wife-syndrome defense in Maine to free the beloved Jackie Bevins from charges of murder for the death of her abusive husband, whom she shot fifteen times (with two reloads) as he rose from the bathtub. he’d whisper that style-setter Tim Harrington, founder of Kennebunkport Resort Collection, owned this house for several years. Undercurrents of earlier worlds compete for psychic space at 4 Josiah Curtis Lane, gateway to Government Wharf in Kennebunkport. Built in 1858, the cottage known at the turn of the 20th century as Sommerlyst is listed this fall for $4.3M. Incomparable views of the yachts and lobster boats gliding by do convey with this waterfront darling. Visitors will be enchanted by the luxurious yet understated finishes. “It rents for $14,000 a week. For a year, total rentals are well north of $200,000,” says seller Jamie Mandell, principal of KPT Luxury Properties, who (through Noyes Real Estate Agency) is selling “Ocean Pointe” for his parents. “My stepfather used to come to the Colony Hotel to play bridge. He and my mother first bought the tiny River Cot-

tage (near the Boathouse Restaurant on Ocean Avenue); then they bought this from Tim Harrington. It was fully renovated by Kevin Lord nine years ago.” We’re standing in the modern kitchen. Just as a tour boat motors upriver, Mandell unlocks a horizontal over-sink window from left to right to let a stunning breeze come through to reveal the Kennebunk River in Sensurround. It’s theater and it works. Everyone feels the tidal pull of location, location, location.

CONVERGENCE ZONE But it’s more than that. From before recorded history into the 1920s, members of the Penobscot Nation paddled south for over 175 miles from Indian Island near Old Town to the Indian Canoe Landing off Kennebunkport’s Government Wharf during summer hunting season. One year, baseball great Louis Sockalexis showed up. Then, too, an historic ferry used to be rowed across the mouth of the Kennebunk River to transport tourists and locals from the Gooch’s Beach side of the river (back when the bathhouses had a nifty vaulted knotty pine snack bar and soda fountain) to the attractions of Ocean Avenue, including the Colony and the Lobster Claw (don’t miss the fried clams). The legendary Bob Reid used to row that ferry in the 1960s. (See postcard next page.) Later, my sister, Jane Sargent Smith, took up the job. Government Wharf carried SEPTEMBER 2021 75

such a stink of bait it knocked you over. It was, and still is, rough and beautiful, a true working place. Sure, Kennebunkport has shoppes like the Snappy Turtle. But we

The Name of the Lane According to Sharon Cummins of Kennebunkport Historical Society, “Josiah Curtis was a mariner and later a fisherman. He deeded Sommerlyst [4 Josiah Curtis Lane] to his father, John, who in turn deeded it to his other son George and his wife Harriett. Isaac Curtis sold it to Nicholas Denise in 1871. After that, it became a tourist place for shore dinners.” Rich Reid posted the photo below of “A couple of [dishes] we have from the Sommerlyst” in the You Know You’re from Kennebunkport If… Facebook Group. “The plates were from the hotel before my greatgreat-aunt bought it, which may have been a hundred years ago. It’s the white building in the left of the [postcard], which also features my brother Bob rowing the [Kennebunk River] ferry.” According to Cummins, “before the Riverside Cottage was expanded into the Riverside House (Hotel)...the Josiah Curtis House [was a] simple cape...This postcard of the Kennebunk River Ferry has Sommerlyst off to the left after the gambrel addition.”

catch some fish here too, deah. PALATE OF PRIVILEGE he parking at Government Wharf is so contested that I drove past Ocean Pointe’s beautiful large parking space next to the front door because the townie in me couldn’t imagine I’d ever be allowed to park here. Well, I’m not exactly a townie. Even though I was born here, the Humble Farmer, Robert Skoglund, calls me a “year-round summer person.” So how about this: the parking is unthinkable. The décor foreshadows the signature style of many of Harrington’s successful KRC properties: white lattice, softly pickled floors, canvas cushions in navy with white piping, blue hydrangeas. A breezy opulence. Apart from the view (and there is no parting yourself from the view), the master bath with chandelier on the second floor is my runaway favorite. There are five bedrooms

and four baths in this 2,788-square-foot home, plus a “Gourmet kitchen with wet bar, screen porch, deck on first and second level, outdoor fire pit.” And a full kitchen on the second floor. Dream of guarding the gate to heaven? You’ve found your post. Just remember, it’s gin martinis on the Kennebunk side of the river, vodka martinis on the Port side. One final shock: Kennebunkport taxes are just $9,839 for this multi-million-dollar retreat. And yes, your new home faces dazzling sunsets too. n Jason Hjort provided research for this story.

THE

things he’s seen? The things he’s gone through? The sea hag that swam alongside his ship for a full fortnight and caused some of the men to lose their reason and throw their bodies with their raving brains into the ocean? And these were good men. The captain only shipped out with the best. A whore he might call me, but I think he’s a gentleman. His height has something to do with it. I associate that long stride with gallantry. Jacob is even taller. What I want to respond with, return fire as it were—though this is bedewed, dampened fire, a cannonade in slow motion, and cobwebs and dried blood—is, “What did you see in her?” But there is no her. She’s less real than the captain. But if she did exist, Jacob would come up with a way to say, “I saw you.” I find myself imagining rude remarks to make to the captain. “Split my beams,” for instance. Not because I’m ashamed, but rather because of the despair. The regret. The grief that causes a lashing out. But still I hope that we find his watery footsteps on Saturday mornings. There is expectation built into the start of a weekend. They’re shaped like corners waiting for you to turn them. For the captain, I bet they resemble the curve of the horizon and its crescent of possibility for what may come tomorrow or after a dozen more leagues. The corner can melt back into a long, ceaseless road before the coffee is cold or the ghost’s footsteps have been mopped up. The ceaseless waterway. They provide us a topic to talk about, the captain’s wet steps. Puzzle over. Turn into romance. We can ask each other if he’ll do us any harm, agree that he is most likely an individual of character who remains committed to what he views as his duty. We’ll feel playful, which is so damn hard to come by now. We don’t know what his duty is. We don’t know what ours remains to each other. We may not be more “here”—as in present within the space of our own ship, the hold of our marriage—than he is. I’d drink the footprints, but they always seem to dry up as the sun breaks in, before we can get to the paper towels that neither Jacob nor myself wants to use. n

sion that was now too late to reverse. “I bet it’s always like that,” Jacob says. “Someone could think, ‘Good choice, this was worth it, my pain is over.’” “Just as their neck snaps? Nope. That’s the nature of hanging. You’d say, ‘Oh shit,’ if you could still talk.” Or else we figure he’s returned home from one of his epic voyages, replete with rum but nonetheless thin from long having tired of hardtack, what fat he had on him being the result of feasting on maggots that inevitably get into the bread on year-long journeys. In he came and there was his wife in the hands of somebody. The smithy. The schoolteacher with more cheek than sense. The village idiot everyone called Cobbler because of the length and thinness of his cock, which resembled a long, tapered boot. I want to gather up the captain’s footsteps and put them in a glass. Drink them down. Pour one life into my own. Imbibe a past that is not mine, dump a wiser existence into who I am. “What did you see in him?” Jacob sometimes asks. We’re not talking about the captain now. We pick the scab that Jacob will say started what we call “it” with axiomatic ambiguity and yet a precision that could drive a dagger through the smallest, most particular pore on a person’s body. But I know a scab is a layer. The scab is not the wound. A wound must exist for the scab to have reason to come into being. Which is a cop-out on my part. Certainly not a feat of bravery or skillful logic. The captain would be disgusted. The

ell, he’s back again,” my husband, Jacob, declares as the breakfast march begins. The breakfast march comprises the two of us coming down the hallway on a Saturday, single file, after a night three feet apart in bed, because it’s not possible to stand side by side, which is the dimensional reality of the corridors of a house from 1721. The oak of the walls is blackened in the manner of quality aged rum or the honeycomb of a well-worked hive that falls to the ground and cracks open in autumn. Charred, tarry wood brushed with beeswax and a veneer of smoke from cured fish. “Whatever,” Jacob adds, the tart, thin smile of an apple rind in his voice. One of those smiles that tries to go somewhere and doesn’t make it. “Old bastard’s earned it.” He’s talking about the footprints, or what appear to be footprints, from the pantry that lead down a corridor with more of the blackened oak and comb, and into the kitchen. They’re made of water. Spaced apart—because we measured—in even installments of thirty-one inches, which would mean they were made by a man who was 6' 2". We’ve invented a sea captain who is tall and was especially tall in his time. Jacob prefers to treat him as a devoted salt who’s been fixing for a nip of port or brandy from his accumulated stash, which he thinks is still here. He wants but a jigger, and maybe a bumper of whist. The captain is dead now, but the way we tell his story to each other, he returns to the house that he built centuries ago, which we’ve occupied for the majority of our time together, as if he wishes to check on us before we leave. Before one of us leaves. We’re not certain who will take the house. I think about proposing that neither of us does, that we up and sell, but I’m not sure that’s fair to the captain, who has chosen our blood as an extension of his blood, and may not welcome the new variety. We put him through a lot when we talk about him. We’ll say that he hanged himself in the root cellar, and just as he was crossing out of this life, he regretted a deci-
