Vanessa German: Miracles and Glory Abound
This exhibition explores the power of stories. How do myths and alterations of the truth affect our understanding of history? Multi-media and performance artist Vanessa German (American, b. 1976) explores the power of stories through an installation that draws from both the visual composition and emotional concept of Emanuel Leutze iconic Washington Crossing the Delaware (1851). Using her sculpted power-figures to imitate Leutze’s composition, German injects the mythic tale with a new narrative. *Vanessa German will perform Friday, October 25 at 5 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. Free and open to the public. Organized by the Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, Michigan, Figge Art Museum, Davenport, Iowa, and Bates College Museum of Art, Lewiston, Maine. Vanessa German, Miracles and Glory Abound, 2019, mixed media installation, dimensions variable. Installation: Figge Art Museum, Davenport, IA

Ralph Eugene Meatyard: Stages for Being
During the course of two decades, Ralph Eugene Meatyard (1925 – 1972) created enigmatic images that consciously challenged the concept of the camera as a mere recorder of the world and secured his place in the history of photography. Meatyard used abandoned homes as sets and directed his wife, children, and friends in scenes that suggest both ritual and theater, creating mood with natural lighting, masks, dolls, and unsettling props. With Over 80 vintage prints Stages for Being celebrates the legacy of this important photographer, whose works are seldom seen in Maine. Curated by Janie M. Welker and organized by the University of Kentucky Art Museum

ere’s a mystery. Ever wonder why George W. Bush (“43”) isn’t set upon by local reporters for quotes about the world situation whenever he flies into Portland International Jetport on his way to Walker’s Point in Kennebunkport? He lands somewhere else, very quietly. We realize this while lunching on a shrimp po boy and a lobster roll in Pilots Cove Cafe at Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport. The reggae in this new bistro is breezy. Sam Adams umbrellas flutter at tables outside. We see a gorgeous $65M Gulf Stream 6 taxi by, call sign N313RG. An executive jet like this comes with Rolls Royce engines and 22 seats. “Who’s flying in that?” we ask Taylor, our server. “One moment,” Taylor says. She disappears into the kitchen and returns. “It’s the Bushes.” “Which Bush?” Maine is still on edge, missing the late George H. W. Bush (“41”) and Barbara Bush. We’ve never experienced a summer up here without the vague sense of them enjoying it with us, too. Until now. “It’s George W. Bush and family. I’m told they fly in and out of here all the time.” There’s an invisible Maine, where the elite slip in and out without our knowing it. The Sanford airport dates to the early 1930s, a private strip created for the pleasure of Goodall mills, creators of Palm Beach clothing. The U.S. Navy expanded it into an auxiliary Navy airfield in 1942-43. During the next two years, they trained British naval aviators to fly Vought F4U Corsair fighters here (sending them back to England with the planes they’d trained in)– even painting a mock carrier deck with arresting gear, according to seacoastonline.com. That’s why one of Sanford’s runways is 150 feet wide–far wider than the smaller aircraft that frequent it today require. This place is dear to me because it’s where I learned to fly at 21. (I still remember making a bad cross-wind correction and skittering off the huge runway, causing the rescue truck to rush to my side, siren screaming.) What a sweet spot, with Mt. Agamenticus guarding over the airstrip and, when you’re in the flight pattern, views that roll out to the sea and the white-sand beaches. Not that all Maine mysteries can be solved. Here’s my next one: How is it that a hot-dog bun–if you put lobster in it and raise the price to $24–turns into a roll in front of your very eyes? Who’s getting rolled here? Here’s to our state’s nuances, our invisibilities, our slights (or flights) of mind.

The Maine chapter [See “Green Book, Maine Edition,” July/ August 2019]…A wonderful article. I’m glad we had a chance to exchange [information] and you included Norma’s experience–which you did beautifully–and Rock Rest, with Valerie Cunningham’s on-themark comments. Interestingly and historically, a prime force and the director of the USO Center was David A. Dickson, Obama Security Advisor Susan Rice’s grandfather. [Just a note]–the Eastport Historical Society [should be] The Border Historical Society in Eastport. H.H. Price, Portland I really enjoyed the articles in [July/August 2019], including the one on the Green Book and the German [U-Boat] prisoners. You know, Virginia Beach had German prisoners at Thalia. Once Upon a Time…in Boothbay
A fairytale home at 37 My Way, Boothbay, by acclaimed builder David Lee is for sale. The 2,200-square-foot contemporary home echoes the “Storybook style” of the 1920s-30s. Channel your inner Hansel and Gretel.
his 1807 creamware pitcher excited crowds during an auction at Bourgeault-Horan Antiquarians at press time. The key decodes flags warning citizens of enemy combatants, friendly smugglers, and revenue cutters coming into port. Jim Horan of Bourgeault-Horan Antiquarians and Associates says, “This Liverpool pitcher is extra rare because of the subject matter and the color used. This one has the signal flags and the Portland Observatory, as well as a ship on the other side—you don’t usually see that.” Hammer price: $4,400.
Disheartened by marine creatures being killed by discarded man-made products swirling in our oceans' gyres, eco-activist Andrea Roth Kimmich is spearheading a plan to erect sculptures that
dramatize ocean life and the threats from floating trash. "Our first prototype (a metalmesh fish open for empty cans
and plastic bottles, by artist Bill Presby) is ready to go up. The beach below the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport is its first host," Kimmich says. Visit the GoFundMe page at gofundme.com/f/by-catch. Also see #breakawayfromplastic

Let Us Feast & Festival
EMERGE Film Festival celebrates its fifth year by rolling out the red carpet. Bringing together filmmakers and audiences from across the state, this festival is a statement event for Lewiston/Auburn and showcases the creative spirit, “réalité,” and stout heart of the mill towns. From October 3-5, catch Maine films at a variety of charismatic venues, including Franco Center Heritage Hall and Heritage Park. In between films, take a critic’s break at Bear Bones Beer on Lisbon Street in Lewiston. Fall brews include the The Rufus Porter, a coffee stout, and New Dead, a smoked IPA. Before leaving L.A., take in the flavors at Fish Bones Grill, a staple in the area for over 20 years. Bright cocktails overflow with color; twists on classic sea fare counterpoint the warm, rustic interior of the renovated Bates Mill surroundings. Local oysters ($3 each) salute the coast. For a real taste of home, don’t miss the Fish Bones Sea Chowder ($5 a cup). To finish, because one should never miss the opportunity, try the Grilled Atlantic Swordfish ($28).

NOTIFICATIONS Our daily struggle with digital over-stimulation is continuous and real. With emails, pop-up ads, and notifications, we are often in sensory overload. Reading a print publication is a focused experience outside of the digital realm. Printed content has tested better with brand recall than digital, and is easier on the eyes. Bottom line: printed publications provide readers with a meaningful and memorable experience. Cummings Printing is a third-generation family-owned company specializing in printing high-quality, shortrun publications. At each phase of the print process, they provide a human-touch that is unmatched by the competition. “…Little else of Charles Deering’s art is known to remain today other than some sketchbooks detailing images of his travels and drawings sent with correspondence to friends. Reports of Deering’s displeasure with his own work include rumors of him destroying his pieces.” –Bethany Gray, curatorial manager at The Deering Estate, Miami

A
s a dashing young naval officer and budding painter, Charles Deering (1852-1927) of South Paris, Maine, swept through Europe with some fast company–painter Anders Zorn, sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and painter John Singer Sargent.
By Co lin w. Sa rgent
These pals laughed together, drank together, critiqued each other’s work, and traveled together. Were they living a charmed life? Certainly they were never going to get old. During an interlude, Sargent dashed off a romantic oil painting of Deering (a Kents Hill School grad who
ranked second in the Class of 1873 at the U. S. Naval Academy) a la bohème. This mysterious likeness–or at least an image of it–was reproduced as part of a major Sargent retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2015, but even the curator suggested the location of the early oil reSeptember 2019 41
Let’s Talk.
“
We were driving the coast, so to speak, I think maybe in a station wagon. He fell in love with wherever we went, and now he’d fallen in love with Maine. We talked excitedly in the car. We were looking for a house on the water. We did examine the place! We kept driving north along the water until I don’t really remember the name of the town. We went quite a ways up, actually, because it was so beautiful. To John, each place was more beautiful than the last."

mained a mystery. Until now. The oil of Charles in 1876 “is owned by the Deering family,” says curator Stephanie Herdrich at The Met. “During a show last year at the Art Institute of Chicago, the portrait was unearthed from deep from among the Deering family and was exhibited as part of ‘an anonymous loan.’” To be accepted in a crowd that included Zorn, Saint-Gaudens, and Sargent, “Deering obviously had a lot of talent, but there may have been tension from his family” to abandon painting and make his mark in business.
W
hen Deering returned to the U.S., he switched careers. Business agreed with him. With a little help from J.P. Morgan, Charles shook the pillars of the aggie universe when he became the chairman of the board of International Harvester. Today, he’s in the pantheon of influential business people born in Maine–not for his painting but for his financial artistry. Many plutocrats are changed by their wealth, but Charles never lost his boho world view. He never forgot his old friends. He sponsored shows for them, collected their work, bailed them out, encouraged them, kept in touch. He became an internationally renowned art collector and kept his collection in Maricel, a castle-like “art pal4 2 p o r t l a n d m o n t h ly m a g a z i n e

“Sargent employs a loose technique to create a sympathetic portrait of his aging friend [Deering] among the coconut palms, capturing the dazzling effect of sunlight on his bright white suit. Here, Sargent’s fluid handling of oil paint has the ease and apparent spontaneity of a watercolor.” —The Met

ace” he built near Barcelona, Spain. He hosted his buddies’ visits there and to the U.S. across many years. Forty-one years after they first met, Sargent visited Deering at The Deering Estate– his mansion in Miami–and painted a new, spectacular canvas of his dear friend. It, too, was among the starring paintings at the Sargent retrospective at The Met. After the show, the portrait disappeared from public view into the hands of a private collector. But the sense of friendship that vibrates in every brush stroke was so strong it startled viewers. Charles Deering was “a cousin [to the Deerings of Portland], of course, but at sixth cousin three-times removed–not very close,” says Deering family member Nick Noyes, curator of library collections at Maine Historical Society. Just a little more proof that as Maine goes, so goes the universe. n

Is it the nod to the ancestral or a pitch towards the future that defines a Franco-American artist? B y R h e a Côt é R o bb i n s

C
eleste Roberge, who is of Irish and French heritage, says that her artwork is more informed by geography than by culture. “Literary works or music have an easier task by telling a story—originating from an oral culture.” Still, her series of sculptures Views of the Head from Behind is informed/inspired by the culture. They are suggested by the Catholic elements of her life. She considers herself a North American continent artist—Maine, Quebec and the Maritimes—where she has studied, visited, lived and exhibited her art. We reminisce about an art exhibit she guest curated, Migrant Within II, first mounted at Carnegie Gallery at the University of Maine in 1992, then at Portland’s Danforth Gallery in 1994. The influential exhibit featured Franco-American artists— we were both among the project’s cura-
tors. Thus connected, we traveled through the state of Maine and into Quebec. Did the show’s theme change our art, or did we shape the theme? Stories surrounded us— the origins, the upbringing, the formation experiences, the geography, adherence to certain rituals, modern sensibilities or the traditional, folk practices. When your brain is dancing, does it matter who’s playing the music? At the time of the Danforth Gallery’s exhibit, I developed the theory that the relationship one developed with artifacts, rituals, or people defined what was FrancoAmerican. Another participant in the process of choosing artists for the exhibit completely rejected the museum quality art as representative of the Franco-American experience. She went home, photographed her mothers’ walls, and called that Franco-

American art. When the exhibit traveled to Fort Kent, Scott Voisine said, “This is one of the first shows I have seen that deals with actual Franco-American art by Franco artists.” His statement alone speaks volumes about the power present in an exhibit of FrancoAmerican artists. I invite you to decide for yourself who or what a Franco-American art is. We are everywhere—close enough to touch. n

Starry Nights Michelin two-star restaurateur Ryan McCaskey returns to his stomping grounds of Stonington to launch Acadia House Provisions.
F
ood buzz nationwide (Forbes, The Michelin Guide, The Boston Globe) has been touting the stunning tidbit that two-Michelin-starred restaurateur/chef Ryan McCaskey has opened a sister restaurant to Chicago’s acclaimed Acadia in the tiny town of Stonington. Now that the first season of McCaskey’s debut of the seasonal Acadia House Provisions is in full swing (closing on Indigenous Peoples’ Day weekend), I stop by to

see how his long-held dream of opening a restaurant in Maine is faring in practice. “I’ve been coming to Deer Isle for 35 years,” McCaskey says. “Still, I’m not one of them. I don’t want to alienate anyone, so it’s important to get things right. Move in slowly.” And slowly he goes—right from the get-go. He had a hundred people booked for opening night. Three times. The first two opening nights had to be cancelled.
“It’s just taking a lot to get this thing off the ground.” When you’re charting your course toward perfect (his work at Acadia garnered a Michelin star after only nine months of operating, and two stars four years later), you need to take the helm with a sure hand, continuing to move forward, addressing each challenge as it comes to light. “The most difficult issue, and we’re not alone in this, is staffing. Hun g ry E ye from Chicago, and there is a huge cultural adjustment. They’re not used to living on an island. There is a need to carry themselves in a certain way, as they are representing the restaurant in this small community. The locals love working with us, but when they were putting in ten-hour days, the parents were not happy. We’ve had to do a lot of juggling with this. “Then there’s the small stuff, like building issues. This space was never intended to be for what we’re doing. We had to adjust, change for what is here. Like when we put in lighting, we had this flickering. We just need to do more work, find the right combination for it all. For the most part I’m pleased. Every week, we get a little bit better.” And with a ten-year lease in tow, McCaskey has a good many weeks to reach the perfection he traditionally seeks and maintains.
T
wo years into the Acadia venture in Chicago, McCaskey started thinking about the current project. “Our numbers really drop off in Chicago in the summer. People are going to festivals, outside entertainment. In fact, we shut down completely for our summer break.” That’s when the chef, for the past five years, brings 16-25 members of his Acadia staff to Deer Isle for the classic summer Maine experience, including a traditional lobster bake on the beach. “So Acadia House Provisions is a good revenue booster. We’re booked through the season, doing an average of 200 people a day. There are 26 reserved seats upstairs, and walk-ins are accommodated by 32 seats on the patio, seven at the bar and eight in a little lounge area. “The reception has been very good. We get about equal amounts of locals and tourists, just what I’d hoped for. And we have regular diners who come for both lunch and dinner. The price point is exactly where I thought it should be—very different from Chicago where the average is $300 to $400 compared to $40 to $45 here. But in Chicago, because of the Michelin stars, we get a lot of international diners. All they do is go to restaurants and write and blog about it. But with summer people, it’s different.” For McCaskey, the balance between cooking styles at both venues is rewarding. “We are coming from the same culture, using the same technique and integrity that you see in Chicago. The Maine style is chef-

It gives me great pleasure to stretch my creative muscles out in these two ways to make people happy.” And the most popular entrees so far? “Seafood, anything seafood. It’s crazy. n this season’s menu, McCaskey says, “We have introduced an heirloom tomato salad, a great first course with a glass of bubbly on the deck. And flatbread. I wanted to see how it would sell, as kind of a preview to pizza on the patio next year. It’s garlic oil, prosciutto, provolone cheese, crimini mushrooms, summer truffles, and Four Seasons Farm’s arugula.” As for comparing his life this summer to his many years visiting Deer Isle? “My whole life I have loved it. My childhood was hanging out in the kitchen at Goose Cove Lodge, the tidal pools, dating, playing, and just being here. Maybe that is a romanticized version, but I was looking at it from that perspective. It’s not the same, living here as a businessman. It’s different from how I remembered it. It’s adjusting to what is out there. I want us all to thrive, to be creative. I’m super glad we did it. “The other night I just sat on my porch (at his summer home on Burnt Cove) and played acoustic guitar. I was here. I tried to absorb it. I just sat, decompressing and remembering the things I really love about being here.” That same evening, most likely diners at Acadia House Provisions were celebrating the newest of the things they love about being here. n

Restaurant Review
Repast Present “Charm beats trendy.”
I
By Colin W. sargent
n November 1980, Nancy and I stopped for supper at the endearing and fun Old Village Inn in Ogunquit during our honeymoon. What I wore that night is thankfully lost to time, because she wore a vivid garnet shade that flashed like the dazzling beaches on Prince Edward Island. During our fabled first visit to this inn, we sensed the future watching us (“Now wait a minute. Isn’t that presque vu?”). Five years later, we would take another plunge. We launched Portland Monthly in 1985. Tonight, just four short decades later, we’re back for dinner before a show at Ogunquit Playhouse. Seated near the brick fireplace (is this where we sat before?), we sip Monte Antico Sangiovese red wine ($6 per glass) while we enjoy the feeling of ‘then’ cutting in for a romantic dance with ‘now.’ A charmed attraction on the King’s Highway (U.S. Route 1) since 1833, this lucky spot has been a favorite stop for travelers including Paul Newman and Joanne Woodword, Kitty Carlisle, Maureen O’Sullivan, Sally Struthers. The Inn is so romantic it made the front cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1947. When Nancy says, “I always wanted to run away with you and still do,” I admit I’m having a great time! The baconwrapped scallops are delicious over a salad served on a six-inch scallop shell. A real shell. “It’s a diver-scallop dish we got from friends in Gloucester,” says our server Marcia Goodman, a member of the ownership team who’s worked here for “37 years. The bar is in a different position from when you came in the first time, but everything else is very much the same.” I
know we’ve stumbled into Shangri-La (except there’s parking here out back!) when she says, “We don’t embrace change here.” What a place to shoot a Quentin Tarantino film. Remember those wonderful days of décor when using a ship model as a room divider was the style? More magic:
Tonight’s special is a Twin Lobster Dinner ($28) for the price of a single lobster roll outside these doors. “Is there such a thing as neo-retro?” Nancy asks. “All these things like blue-cheese and bacon-stuffed mushroom caps– nobody serves mushroom caps!” I order them instantly and savor them. They’re served piping hot in a steel au gratin dish–straight from the 1970s. Our entrées are Prime Rib served with horseradish and a heavenly popover ($23) and Seafood Stuffed Haddock ($22) with green beans and carrots. A lemon slice tucked in a cheesecloth sachet to catch the seeds still says “we care.” We finish by splitting the Chocolate Lava Cake. Cost for the entire meal is $103–a pomegranate cocktail, two glasses of wine, two appetizers, two entrées, a shared desert, and coffee with refills. We almost order a split of Cliquot as a toast to 39 years but decide to do that the next time we’re here. Believe me, we won’t wait so long for our next visit. n Old Village Inn, 250 Main Street, Ogunquit. Sunday - Friday 5:30 p.m.–9 p.m.; Saturday 5:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m. 646-7088. September 2019 79

his 1851 landmark at 2 Mast Cove Lane in Kennebunkport entices if you dream of living and running a gallery in the heart of the Kennebunks. Mast Cove Galleries has been a lovely addition to the Maine art community “for 40 years,” says owner/operator Jean Briggs. “For myself, it’s time for something new.” The asking price is $995,000. Inviting gallery spaces adorn the firstfloor chambers, along with a baby grand piano. Briggs offers jazz and music recitals most Wednesdays to deepen visitors’ appreciation of the artworks. As we tour the gallery, Briggs points to a corner where shafts of sunlight seem to lift the room and put it in motion. “The late Richie Havens (1941-2013) performed in exactly this spot for our guests.” All 6’ 6” of him. “He was in town one January, visiting a friend. I recognized him and ended up chatting with him for hours at Alisson’s Restaurant in Dock Square. He came back to the gallery and played ‘Here Comes the Sun’ among many of his hits.” She closes her eyes and listens. You can almost hear his pounding acoustic guitar vibrating among the paintings and sculpture. Kismet like this during a snowy January, when the Port has its mittens on, shows what a force Briggs can be. “George Bush 41 has been here, too, listening to a jazz

“D
irectors must satisfy an audience’s expectation of spectacle using crude tools: guns, cars, make-up, sex, dance, romance, melodrama; but only the great auteurs acknowledge this anticipation directly honoring what we know in our guts to be true, that we are watching animation—a cartoon.” I was 19 when I wrote that line in one of a series of movie reviews published in the student newspaper of the college I attended in California. Somehow these alcohol-fueled arrogant articles resulted in my sitting across from a famous art critic in the dark living room of his home in the Oakland hills as he read that sentence out loud. He exhaled cigarette smoke showing teeth and leaned back in the leather couch, his long body more coiled than relaxed. The sedation from the pint of Southern Comfort I nearly finished driving up the hills to his Spanishstyle house was no longer tamping my anxiety. I lit a cigarette of my own. I had prepared for this by reading his most recent book, underlining phrases to break down his paragraph-long sentences. I stuffed his last two essays from ARTnews and the New York Re-
Critics Smoking By dan domench
view of Books into my mind. His intense writing seemed to communicate something important about society that I could not always follow, but it was clear the work of the artists he analyzed was secondary to his larger truths. This hot summer afternoon he was interviewing me for a paid fellowship at UC Berkeley in art criticism, and we were two hours into the conversation. “Your reviews strive to entertain,” he said, “and this effort encourages me to like you. But what if you focused on just one of the ideas you throw around, no matter how absurd? Apply the idea to literature, painting, any art form. Then research and write a book raising yourself above the fray, telling readers why your idea matters, how it illustrates the mess we live in today. How
far, for example, could you push your idea that great directors are con men manipulating society for money and status to no good end?” “I never said directors are con men,” I said. “I think it’s clear I love film. I just want it to be good.” “Love,” he said, “and wanting. And here you are. You’ve made no effort to mention my work or try to convince me that you’re interested in being a colleague or even a friend. You want me to think you are simple in your thoughts, but twice you used phrases from my last book and looked at me to see if I recognized them. And you drank alcohol in your car in my driveway where you knew I could see you and stood close enough so that I could smell it on you which only dramatizes a weakness serving as an excuse for future betrayal. You present yourself as an innocent and that makes you dangerous. I’m sure you’ll write about me and this interview and my ridiculousness.” “I won’t do that,” I said, “and I won’t pursue this further.” “Nonsense,” he said. “Let’s have a scotch. I’m recommending you for the fellowship.” n
