Our favorite part of the community center is the COMMUNITY feeling. As the city gets busier and busier it seems that it harder and harder for people to connect, even to their neighbors. The community centers are a great way to bring people together, combat loneliness by offering a place to make connections and friends with the people near you. It is great that they offer preschool, kids' activities as well as activities for adults and general gatherings. We are so happy our daughter attends preschool at Hillside Community Center! —Emily and Poppy, Hillside Community Center

MEET OUR TEACHERS! CHRISTA BAKER I have a degree in early childhood education and have worked with kids of all ages for more than 28 years. Teaching and spending quality time with children is a passion of mine. I am a mother of six children ranging from 23 to 6 years of age. Needless to say, I love kids! My family moved from Springfield, Illinois to Oregon 4 years ago. We love it here and Hillside has become an important part of my life here in Portland! As a preschool teacher my goal is to foster independence in children. This allows them to become more confident in themselves and creates a sense of self-worth and achievement.
ADRIANA WILLIAMSON Portland has been home to my family for over three generations; my mother, aunts, siblings and myself all attended Mt. Scott Community Center preschool. My grandma taught preschool and I chose to follow in her footsteps. In 2014, I was hired on with Parks & Recreation at Peninsula Park Community Center where I worked as a camp counselor, an after-school coordinator and taught preschool and pre-kindergarten. I am currently going on my 5th year of teaching. I like to create a play-based classroom and have a mindfulness approach to my teaching. I am always open to new and fresh ideas. I love including a wide range of art, books, yoga, songs, and hands-on projects throughout the school year. I believe all children can flourish in school and learn in their own unique way.
RENE COOPER As a child, I went to a Parks & Recreation preschool in Studio City, California, taking my first ballet and tap classes at two years old. I continued my dance, musical theatre and arts education through-out high school at Hamilton Music Academy. My love for early childhood development began in 2006 when I became a preschool teacher, finding my passion for inspiring the social and emotional growth of children. I obtained my occupational certificate in the field of preschool teacher and infant caregiver. I believe learning and collaboration are ongoing and thrive through sharing.

SENIOR RECREATION: PARTNERSHIP CLASSES Location: Works Progress Agency 811 East Burnside Street #124 | Portland Accessible to those using a wheelchair, walker or motorized scooter. Storytelling | Age 60+ Share in celebrating each other’s stories and gain deeper selfunderstanding through this fun and interactive workshop series. Facilitators will utilize methods of social practice art, such as movement, writing, prompts, interviews and more as we experiment with creative storytelling and narrative performance. Materials: Bring a notebook and writing tool of choice. Monday 1/21, 1/28, 2/4 1:00-4:00pm $89 1099460 Facilitators Erica and Emily are founding members of Works Progress Agency, a socially engaged art and design studio. They are both practicing artists and creative consultants who met while earning MFAs from Portland State University’s Art and Social Practice program. As artists, they make collaborative work with other people, about where they come from and what’s important to them. In addition to being artists, they consider themselves educators, producers, writers, photographers, and storytellers, among other things. This unwieldy path has led them to become pretty good at facilitating dialogue that helps people better understand themselves, and each other. Both have created or produced many projects for, and with, senior citizens. They hold a deep commitment to social justice, which informs their art and life. Though Erica and Emily love working together, Emily’s favorite collaborator was her grandmother.
Shaping Your Path | Age 60+ Explore your lifelong personal, professional, and creative growth. Lil Nature Kids at Mt Tabor Park
Age 3–5 It's proven—young children need nature! Research supports it: time in nature as a young child with trusted adults increases creativity, focus, coordination, and social development.
