ABOUT COMMUNITY MUSIC CENTER (CMC)

In partnership with a nonprofit partner, CMC has been a popular place for music lessons and concerts in Portland since 1955. We enhance the greater Portland community by providing opportunities for all ages to learn about, make, and enjoy music. We do this through affordable music classes and lessons, free and low-cost concerts and workshops, low-cost instrument rentals, and other resources for the public.

Community Chorus | Age 18 & up

Seeking fellowship with other vocalists in a dedicated group? Join this long-standing, medium-sized, non-audition community choir, affectionately known as the Francis Street Singers, to rehearse and perform repertoire spanning nearly 500 years. Create beautiful harmony while making new friends. Prerequisite: Knowledge of tone production, sight-reading skills, familiarity with part singing. Prior choir experience helpful. Intermediate and Advanced Recorder Ensemble

Age 16 & up

Enter the next level of the instrument's repertoire. Explore more challenging pieces, play two or more sizes in an ensemble where technique and musicianship will develop. Sopranos, altos, tenors, bass, and great bass come together as a polished ensemble under the guidance of an instructor. Meet other enthusiasts and refine skills that enable playing as one. There will be opportunity for some to sing and play reed and string instruments. Technique and ornamentation will be discussed. Prerequisite: Intermediate ability on instruments (know all fingerings and have some experience playing independent parts) and sight-reading at a high level (reading independent notes and rhythms without assistance). Strings and Piano | Age 8–18

Play trios, quartets or other works with peers. Explore concepts of composition and improvisation. Branch out from Classical to other popular styles, based on your own interests. Players are placed into chamber groups by audition. Ensembles have substantial time each day with a professional coach, and additional rehearsals with an assistant coach. Groups perform their finished work for the public at the end of the program. Prerequisites: Ability to read music at playing level and some prior ensemble experience; for strings, vibrato and flexible bow technique. Suggested level for violins is Suzuki Book 4 and above, violas and cellos at Suzuki Book 3 or above, and for piano advanced technique and reading is required. Registration: May 23–June 10 Program: Monday–Friday, July 18–29 (two weeks). Groups meet for about two hours between 9:00am at 4:00pm TBD based on student and instructor schedules. Performance: Saturday, July 30 at 2:00pm 100% attendance required for both weeks, including final concert.

Classes and performance take place at the Community Music Center, 3350 Southeast Francis Street, in Portland. Weather permitting, some classes might take place outside in nearby Kenilworth Park.

$295 (Portland residents)* $413 (Non-residents of Portland) There will be no refund of fees except for students not placed in a group. *Residents of Portland also have a Pay What You Can discount available at time of registration to reduce cost as a barrier to participation. Non-residents of Portland needing financial assistance can inquire about available support from the non-profit friends of CMC by emailing cmc@portlandoregon. gov or calling 503-823-3177.

INDIVIDUAL LESSONS Violin, Viola, Cello | Age 4–18 Advanced Piano (continuing CMC students) | Age 10–18

Thrive with customized instruction. Build the skills and abilities needed to enjoy music as a participant, gaining self-confidence and developing self-expression. CMC welcomes new continuing students in summer (new beginners wait until fall).

Virtual or In-Person

Instruction occurs online via Zoom or in-person at the Community Music Center. Specify your preferred choice during the registration process.

Enrollment Process

New-to-CMC students: use the “application” activity number below to be put on a waiting list for an opening. Placement with an instructor depends on openings that are available at the time you apply. • Beginners: Apply in fall term.

(non-beginners): 1147096 • Continuing CMC students will receive their unique link from the CMC office to use for enrollment. In order to continue

lessons from spring to summer, students must enroll by the deadline of June 4.

Lessons are scheduled between instructor and student at a mutually agreeable day and time, as verbally confirmed. Your instructor may require materials not included in registration fee. Beginners start with 30 minute lessons; advanced students (playing concertos or sonatas) move to 45 minute lessons; 60 minute lessons are provided in special cases. Suzuki, traditional, hybrid, and other instructional methods are used, depending on the instructor. Daily individual practice between classes is a required part of successful music instruction.

Participation

Good attendance and practice between lessons is expected.

Required Enrichment Class (School Year)

During the school year, CMC requires private lesson students to enroll in a concurrent enrichment class (Music Skills, Ensemble, etc.), or apply for an exemption if participating in similar activities elsewhere. Separate fees apply for CMC’s enrichment classes, and enrollment for the class is in addition to the private lesson registration.

New Beginners: Look for Piano Primer in the fall. (There are no beginning-level classes this summer.) Continuing Students: In summer term, all continuing group class students beyond Primer (Term 2) choose a Laboratory class that matches their schedule. Continuing private lesson students enroll using the instructions emailed to you by the CMC office. If you skip piano class in the summer you can pick up again in fall at the level you left off in the spring.

Suzuki Group Classes | Age 4–18

Play through known songs with a group of kids at the same level to enhance the string lesson experience. Be inspired by watching more advanced players. Enjoy string games and brainteasers, too! Beginners join after 3 months (one term) of lessons or with instructor permission. Note: This course is a complement to private lessons.
