SUMMER FREE FOR ALL We are proud to share the 2019 Stories of Summer, our annual report on Summer Free For All—along with our deepest thanks! Summer Free For All provides free, accessible, and family-friendly summer activities—live music, movies, crafts, sports, games, and lunches. It keeps kids active and healthy, builds community, and celebrates our diverse city. This year’s highlights include the Washington Park Summer Festival featuring local jazz and the Portland Cello Project, the 10th annual Portland World Soccer tournament, and several popular multicultural events—Festival Latino, Good In The Hood, Tonga Day, and the Slavic Festival. Your generosity makes it all possible. We are grateful for local small business owners, corporate donors, private foundations, community organizations, and individuals like you. This year, Portlanders contributed nearly $600,000 in cash and $1.9 million of in-kind support—a record year. We hope these stories and images of warm summer days in our cherished parks evoke joy and a sense of pride for your part in creating lasting memories for our community. Thank you for your support and investment! NICK FISH, COMMISSIONER

Summer is the perfect time for kids to be active in Portland’s parks. Summer Free For All embodies Nike’s belief that kids aren’t made to sit still—they’re made to play. MATT GESCHKE, SENIOR DIRECTOR NIKE SOCIAL & COMMUNITY IMPACT IN NORTH AMERICA

BRING ON THE PLAY When kids can’t get to a playground, Mobile Play brings the play to them. Every weekday over the summer, a minivan packed with games and activities traveled to apartment complexes or underdeveloped park sites in east Portland. Kids at each site reveled in the twice-weekly visits that included hula-hoop challenges, arts and crafts, and water play. This year, Summer Free For All worked with Meals on Wheels People to serve lunches at all five Mobile Play sites and through this partnership, 1,685 nutritious lunches were provided to kids—along with lots of summer fun. CELEBRATION IS A FORM OF RESISTANCE Festival Latino took on a new meaning in its fifth year. Just one week after the mass shooting in El Paso, and only days after immigration raids in Mississippi—Portlanders came together to celebrate Latinx culture through music, food, and community. A rare August downpour forced the annual event’s cancelation not long after the festivities had begun, but it didn’t dampen spirits. “In these dark times, our history tells us that we get up. We keep going and we celebrate.” says David Martinez, Deputy Director of Latino Network. Summer Free For All Supervisor Chariti Montez adds, “Celebration is a form of resistance—it’s saying that we’re not scared, we’re proud of our culture, and we’re proud of who we are.” CULLY PARK JOSHUA JAMES HUFF THE BEAUTIFUL GAME Mo Mohammad cheered from the sidelines as the Troncos warmed up for the championship match at the 10th annual Portland World Soccer tournament. Just then a Troncos player rushed over: they needed Mo to sub for an injured teammate. Thrilled, Mo sprinted to the field—wearing flip-flops. With help from one player, who happened to have one extra cleat, and a loan from another, Mo took the field with a black cleat on his right foot and a white one on his left; and assisted the team to second place victory! Portland World Soccer is a Portland Parks & Recreation program that builds community and supports resiliency among immigrant and refugee youth through their love of soccer. LENTS PARK

10 STEPS FORWARD With the sweet smell of fry bread in the air and the rhythmic sounds of Native American drumming, the Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA) cohosted its first Summer Free For All Movie in the Park: Finding Nemo in Diné (Navajo) with English subtitles. Many in Portland’s urban Native community were excited to celebrate their culture and heritage and connect with fellow Diné. Moviegoer, Jackie Smalley, says it was “a very special night because our language was represented. I felt this event was 10 steps forward in the right direction.” CULLY PARK BOB KERNS
TEACHER IN TRAINING The hustle, bustle, and high energy at Lunch + Play sites is exactly the kind of environment Madalyn Davis thrives in. Madalyn aspires to be a teacher and this was her second summer working for the Lunch + Play program as a counselor at a big park with lots of kids. Madalyn’s bonus-mom says the experience “really challenged Madalyn to elevate her attentiveness, sense of responsibility, and professionalism.” As for Madalyn—she said, “working in the SFFA program is an experience that I'll hold forever. The connections I made gave me so much excitement JAMISON HOLTZ and pushed me to make each day better than the one before. The people I worked with, parents I connected with, and kids I influenced are the main reasons I love this job and will come back each year." LUUWIT VIEW PARK

WORLD-CLASS JAZZ Jazz masters (and fan favorites) Mike Phillips, Saeeda Wright, Louis “King Louie” Pain, and LaRhonda Steele brought people to their feet with inspiring rhythms and soulful vocals at the Washington Park Summer Festival. From the stage or the audience—no one could resist the power of the music from legendary saxophonist Mike Phillip’s energetic set. Cohosted by PDX Jazz, this concert united Portlanders of all ages and backgrounds in a celebration of music and community. WASHINGTON PARK BOB KERNS
