• If this is your first time requesting accommodations through Inclusion Services, you will need to complete either a phone intake or an Accommodation Form.

IN PERSON – Any PP&R facility can process your registration, including the Customer Service Center located located on the first floor of the Portland Building at 1120 SW Fifth Ave. All Community Centers are open for walk-in registration during business hours.

MAIL – Mail your completed registration form found in the back of the guide to the program center address. Include full payment by check payable to the City of Portland. Mailin registration is also received at the PP&R Customer Service Center, 1120 SW Fifth Ave, Suite 800, Portland, OR 97204.

NON-RESIDENT PRICING The prices listed in this guide are the discounted rates for City of Portland residents. Persons residing outside of the City boundaries are charged an additional 40% because they do not pay taxes that support Portland Parks & Recreation.

For those planning on registering for multiple activities, we offer a Non-Resident Discount Pass which takes 25% off the non resident fee for the activity. Purchase at any community center or pool.

Hike for Health and the Advanced Hike for Health are transported in 15 passenger vans.

Primary Pick Up Location 82nd and Siskiyou. Park facing 82nd. Meet 15 minutes prior to departure time. If indicated, certain hikes will have a second pickup location. Hikers meeting there must have a cell phone number on file and be available by phone the morning of the hike.

PREREQUISITES The Senior Recreation hiking program offers 3 distinct and sequential levels. As individuals gain strength and endurance they may choose to qualify to longer and more difficult hikes. Hikers can do so either at the quarterly Hike for Health Qualifier or on a designated Metro Mover or Hike for Health hike. The free orientation is also required to all walkers and hikers new to the Senior Recreation program.

Hike Level 1 Metro Movers Ability to walk a continuous 25-minute mile on uneven surfaces without shortness of breath. Please sign up for walks that you are confident you can complete.

Please be prepared with hiking boots and gear as discussed in the required Hiking Orientation.

The majority of the hike is uphill and downhill with stair climbing and descending (100 steps) included. Paths are gravel and forest floor. The climb to the summit involves a 370-foot elevation gain. Please be prepared with hiking boots and gear as discussed in the required Hiking Orientation.

Prerequisite: Must be able to walk a 25-minute mile on uneven surfaces without shortness of breath. Please sign up for walks that you are confident that you can complete. The group stays together and no participant walks in front of the leader or behind the sweep.

STANDARD HIKING SUPPLIES Standard supplies for Metro Movers, Hike for Health, and Advanced Hike for Health • Appropriate footwear: either hiking boots or equivalent with lugged soles for trails, sturdy shoes for walks • Clothing layers which wick well and allow you to maintain a comfortable temperature in hot and cold conditions, preventing condensation from sweat: - a lightweight, breathable base layer - a middle warmth layer - a rain jacket as third or outer layer (also serves as windbreaker) and optional

rain pants • Hat: wide-brimmed in summer, warm in winter • Gloves: under cold weather conditions, including high altitude in spring/fall • Water: enough for the hike length, adjusting for temperature, elevation gain and sun exposure. Peter is a part time instructor with The Heritage Institute/Antioch University, where he conducts over 30 different courses for School teachers throughout the year that focus on local art, architecture, Natural science and history. A former elementary and middle school teacher, Peter has a degree in Forestry, and worked for the U.S. Forest Service before entering the teaching profession. He has owned and operated, “Peter’s Walking Tours of Portland,” since 1995. Each year, Peter leads more than 50 tours of Downtown Portland and vicinity.

The tours are appropriate for all age groups and have proven to be fun and educational adventures.

Meet Us There! Share the magnificent art of a premier theater production with Portland Center Stage at the Armory. PCS is the largest theater company in Portland, and one of the top 20 regional theater companies in the country. The Washington County Museum, located on the campus of Portland Community College at Rock Creek, is the center for learning about the human history of Tualatin Valley. Exhibits here span from pre-colonial time to the modern day. The museum partners with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde to highlight stories of the Kalapuya and other Native Americans as they contribute to the cultural narrative today. You’ll see modern Native American artwork along with historic artifacts. The Old Log Jail is one of the oldest log structures in Oregon, dating to 1853, and is an interesting example of hand-carved timber construction. Our docent-guided tour of the museum will last about one hour, followed by time on your own to explore further.

The Oregon State Hospital Museum of Mental Health is located on the campus of the Oregon State Hospital in Salem.

Electroshock therapy, eugenics and lobotomies were regularly practiced here before these practices and more were condemned and the hospital was largely demolished. The goal of this museum is “Bearing Witness, Giving Voice”, and its exhibits tell the powerful stories of the people who lived and worked there. We will have lunch in Salem before our tour.

Settlemier House and Woodburn Museum

Visit the 1850’s Victorian-Craftsman home of the Settlemiers, a family of settlers who travelled to the area by way of the Old Oregon Wagon Trail. The family started a plant nursery and were part of the founding of Woodburn. Their home displays their wealth in Queen Anne details like scrollwork and cupolas and it’s furnished with artifacts as though they still lived there. We’ll have lunch together before exploring Woodburn Museum, which is located in a historic storefront in downtown. This space houses a collection of historic photographs and features an eclectic scope of displays.

Volunteers have been working hard to transform the adjacent historic Bungalow Theater into a community space, as well.

Fort Vancouver and Pearson Air Museum

Acquaint yourself with the fantastically rich history of Ft Vancouver through visits to the Visitor Center and the Reconstructed Fort sites. This area was a large settlement that served as the Hudson’s Bay Company’s fur trade fort as well as a busy village and US Army barracks. From 1824, this was a hub of scientific research, fur trade, agriculture, shipbuilding and much more. In the early 1900’s Pearson Air Field was created from the polo field used by the Army barracks.

From sheep to shawl, we’ll experience the whole process of shearing sheep, alpacas, llamas and rabbits, and processing their wool into fibers. View displays and demonstrations of spinning, weaving, knitting, rug-hooking, and the production of intricate lace. Iris and peonies are the stars of the day in this flower tour to Salem. We’ll start the day with a docent-guided tour of peaceful, inspiring Gaiety Hollow Garden at the Lord and Schryver Conservancy. Mount St Helens Volcano Tour and Picnic

At 8:32 on Sunday morning, May 18, 1980, Mount St Helens erupted and blew down or scorched 230 square miles of forest...30 years later, recovery at Mount St Helens continues. Learn about the blast through stops at the Mount St Helens Visitor Center and Johnston Ridge Observatory, which host interpretive displays that tell the biological, geological, and human story of Mount St Helens. Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

Ft Dalles Museum and Guided Mural Walk

Visit the oldest history museum in Oregon and the restored 1895 Anderson Homestead of authentic hand-hewn logs. Antique vehicles, pioneer memorabilia, historic photographs and Native American artifacts fill the Gothic Revival Army Officer’s Home in The Dalles. Program fee includes admissions. Bring money for lunch at the Baldwin Saloon located in a historic property in downtown The Dalles, where everything is made from scratch, including pasta dishes.

Entrées range in price from $10-14 salads and sandwiches to $20-25 large entrées.

After lunch, we’ll take a guided walking tour of town to view many murals depicting historic events and learn the stories behind them. Walk will cover approximately 1.5 miles at a relaxed pace.

Petroglyph Hike and Gorge Discovery Museum

Take an archaeological journey on a Rangerguided hike in the Horsethief Lake area of Washington’s Columbia Hills State Park.

View the petroglyphs and pictographs at this National Historic Site, including Tsagagalal, “She Who Watches”. Afterwards, we’ll have lunch in the Dalles and visit the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center to learn more of the history, flora and fauna, and Native American culture of the Columbia Gorge.

Mt. Hood History Walks

Travel to Mt. Hood for three short walks on National Forest interpretative trails.

Learn about historic volcanic events, area ecological systems, the travails of pioneers on the infamous Barlow trail, the first highway over the mountain and visit the Little Zigzag waterfall. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for about 2 miles of walking over the course of the day at a relaxed pace. Trails are mostly flat (less than 100 ft elevation gain) and crushed gravel or paved. We plan to stop along each trail to take in interpretive signs and learn some natural history. Lunch will be at the historic Zigzag Inn. Bring money for lunch.

Lake Oswego Clematis Garden and Tea

Discover the Rogerson Clematis Garden in Lake Oswego, a hidden gem full of flowers year-round! We’ll have our own private tour to learn about the many varieties of clematis, from “wild, wiry tangles to feathery balls of fluff reminiscent of a Dr. Seuss book.” This trip includes access to the greenhouse and the plant sale.

After strolling the gardens, we’ll have a sumptuous high tea in a whimsical atmosphere. Menu includes tea sandwiches, hot savories, scones with clotted cream and mini-desserts. Program fee includes admission and tea.

Lelooska Native American Performance

On this fun and informative adventure in SW Portland, we will take a hike in Tryon Creek State Park to discover dozens of native trees and plants. After a picnic lunch in the park, we explore the beautiful, yet hidden Elk Rock Garden (also known as the Bishop’s Close), where we’ll discover many varieties of introduced plants. Set in the fire-lit replica of a Kwa’kwaka’wakw ceremonial house, the living history performance consists of dramatic narration and dance presentations of traditional Northwest Coast ceremonial masks. The performance is designed to give the audience an understanding of Northwest Coast First Nations culture, as well as a feeling of intimate participation in this living history. The Lelooska Museum located in Ariel, WA, houses an immense collection of artifacts from many regions, a replica fur trade store and a gift shop. Fee includes admission and performance. Bring money for an early dinner.

Astoria Scandinavian Festival

For over 50 years, Astoria has hosted the Scandinavian Festival as a Midsomer event packed with the traditions of Nordic immigrants to the North Coast of Oregon.

We’ll arrive in time for the opening parade and Midsomer Pole ceremony. Visit booths of Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish and Icelandic foods, handcrafted items, and imports. The rest of the day is full of activities and demonstrations – Icelandic horses at the arena, combat tournaments and traditional crafts at the “Empire of Chivalry and Steel” Viking encampment, and of course a Swedish Meatball eating contest.

With any extra time, visit the beer garden and enjoy live music and dancing all day.

Pacific City has been known for over a hundred years as a quaint fishing village and vacation destination located in a very unique geological area. This beach excursion boasts spectacular views of Cape Kiwanda, a pristine beach, Bob Straub Park, views of the fascinating geological formation of Haystack or “Chief Kiawanda” Rock,and the well known Pelican Pub. Please bring money for purchases and lunch. Drive time is approximately 2.5 hours each direction with one stretch/bathroom break mid-way.
