Rosewood Music Program

Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) is offering group classes and private music lessons at Rosewood Initiative (Southeast 162nd Avenue and Stark Street in Portland, Oregon). The program, funded by a grant from the City of Portland, currently provides full scholarship for instrumental instruction to school-age youth in East Portland, with preference to students in school programs in the districts of Centennial, David Douglas, Reynolds, and Parkrose. INSTRUMENT LESSONS

Thrive with customized instruction. Build the skills and abilities needed to enjoy music as a participant, gaining self-confidence and developing self-expression.

Virtual or In-Person

All lessons are currently virtual (via Zoom). In-person lessons may be available in the future.

Enrollment Process

Lessons are scheduled between instructor and student at a mutually agreeable day and time, as verbally confirmed. Your instructor may require materials not included in registration fee. All lessons are 30 minutes weekly. Suzuki, traditional, hybrid, and other instructional methods are used, depending on the instructor. Daily individual practice between classes is a required part of successful music instruction.

Instrument rentals may be available—indicate your need for an instrument at the time of pre-registration or fill out our online rental request form.

Group Music Classes

Creative, engaging, and community-building. Students will explore the basics of technique, theory, and sight reading by playing together in a welcoming ensemble setting. Class materials will be provided by the teacher at no extra charge. Participants are encouraged to attend at minimum 8 sessions per term. High level of attendance is expected. Class will be taught in both English and Spanish. All languages spoken are welcome. No previous experience required.
