HEAD COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE In his first season with the club, Giovanni Savarese led the Timbers to 15 regularseason wins in 2018, tied for the third-most victories for a first-year head coach in MLS history. Under Savarese’s guidance, the Timbers won their second Western Conference Championship and advanced to their second MLS Cup in 2018. Registering 18 wins overall including an impressive playoff run, Savarese became one of three head coaches since 2000 to register 18 or more wins, including playoffs, in their first year as a head coach in the league. He also became just the second head coach in the last 14 seasons to advance to MLS Cup in his first year in MLS. Appointed as the Timbers’ head coach on Dec. 18, 2017, Savarese brings over 25 years of professional experience as a player and coach to the Timbers organization. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Savarese joined the Timbers after spending the previous five seasons as the head coach and sporting director of the New York Cosmos, where he developed one of the most successful clubs in the NASL, compiling a 65-26-44 record in 135 regular-season games, including a career-best 20-7-5 record in 2016 and an undefeated NASL Spring Season in 2015. Additionally, the Cosmos scored 223 goals during Savarese’s five seasons at the helm, which rank as the most in the NASL during that stretch. Savarese also led the Cosmos to four Soccer Bowl appearances, claiming the 2013, 2015 and 2016 championships. Most recently, after a 10-7-15 record in the 2017 regular season, Savarese guided the Cosmos to their third straight appearance in the NASL championship match, narrowly falling 2-0 to the San Francisco Deltas. Prior to joining the Cosmos organization, Savarese, who holds a USSF “A” license, served as the head of youth development for the New York MetroStars/Red Bulls from 2005-2007, before joining the Cosmos as the club’s academy director in 2010, with a focus on developing youth talent in the greater New York area. Savarese served as the Cosmos academy director for two years before being announced as the head coach of the first Cosmos team in 28 years on November 19, 2012. Savarese enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career, including five seasons in Major League Soccer, scoring 159 goals in 322 games played in various leagues in the United States, Venezuela, Italy and England. At the international level, Savarese earned 30 caps for the Venezuela National Team from 1989-2001, scoring 10 goals, including a notable finish against South American rival Argentina in 1996. After beginning his professional career in Venezuela with Deportivo Italia in 1986, Savarese spent five seasons (1990-95) playing in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League and the USISL before being drafted by the MetroStars in the inaugural MLS SuperDraft in 1996 as the ninth overall selection, notching a teamrecord 41 goals and 94 points in 85 regular-season appearances during three seasons with the club. The striker’s record stood until 2009 when it was surpassed by Juan Pablo Angel. Following his three seasons with the MetroStars, Savarese spent the 1999 MLS campaign with the New England Revolution, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. Shortly afterwards, Savarese joined Italian Serie A club A.C. Perugia and was loaned to A.S. Viterbese in 2000, before returning stateside to join the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2000 MLS season. After a brief stint with the Earthquakes, Savarese joined Swansea City, where he scored 14 goals across all competitions, prior to signing with Millwall F.C. in 2001. Following short spells with Venezuelan club Deportivo Italchacao and Italian club Sassari Torres, Savarese’s playing career concluded in 2004 after scoring five goals in 10 appearances with the Long Island Rough Riders. In the collegiate ranks, Savarese enjoyed a four-year (1990-93) playing career with Long Island University after moving to the United States from Venezuela in 1990. Savarese has also served as a member of the media, working as an analyst for ESPN International and ESPN Deportes. Giovanni and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Valentina and Alessandra.

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT HOUSTON DYNAMO WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 2019 PREVIOUS MATCH - PORTLAND TIMBERS AT VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC - L 0-1 BOX SCORE
MATCH RECAP The Portland Timbers fell 1-0 to Cascadia-rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC on the road at BC Place in front of 18,356 fans on May 10, snapping the club’s three-game winning streak. Key plays Vancouver took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when a failed clearance fell to Fredy Montero inside the box, with the forward striking a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the net. Holding a 27-12 shot advantage against Vancouver, the Timbers threatened the opponent’s goal throughout the match. Portland nearly scored in the 11th minute when Jorge Moreira’s cross from the right flank found Jeremy Ebobisse, but his leaping header missed inches over the crossbar. In the 15th minute, Moreira headed down Diego Chara’s long pass on the right wing past his marker, before forcing Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau into a save at his near post. In the 25th minute, Diego Valeri’s in-swinging cross from a corner kick found Larrys Mabiala, but his header was saved by Crépeau. Valeri’s ensuing corner service picked out Bill Tuiloma, whose header was tipped off the crossbar by Crépeau. Seconds later, Tuiloma headed Valeri’s cross past the far post.

Starting the second half on the front foot, Sebastián Blanco, who led the Timbers with eight shots in the match, was first to a cleared ball just inside the top of the box, but his powerful shot sliced wide past the post in the 47th minute. After dispossessing the ball from Vancouver midfielder In-Beom Hwang, Diego Chara was fouled just outside the 18-yard box. Tuiloma’s ensuing free-kick attempt was fired just inches over the crossbar in the 63rd minute. Four minutes later, Flores’ low shot from outside the box missed the target. The Timbers nearly scored in the 72nd minute when Blanco found Valeri streaking into the box, taking a touch past Whitecaps FC defender Doneil Henry and then hitting a low, left-footed shot that Crépeau saved from close range. In the 79th minute Blanco cut inside the left wing and delivered a cross to secondhalf substitute Andy Polo near the right end line. The match was the 300th MLS match (regular season and playoffs) for the Timbers. Portland finished the match with 27 shots, setting a club record for most shots in an away match in MLS. The previous high was set on March 2, 2019, when the Timbers had 24 shots in a 3-3 draw against the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The 27 shots are the third-most for an away team in any MLS match since 2010. Additionally, the 27 shots are the most in a regular-season match for the Timbers since the club had 30 shots against FC Dallas on June 11, 2014. Portland outshot Vancouver 27-12 in the match. The 15-shot advantage is the most the Timbers have ever had in an away match. Diego Valeri created nine chances in the match. Valeri is the only player to create nine or more chances in an MLS match this season. Valeri had 10 chances created against the Colorado Rapids on March 2. Valeri made his 199th start (regular-season and playoffs) for the Timbers since joining the club in 2013.

NOTABLE QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese On his overall thoughts on the match… “I thought that we had very good moments. Unfortunately, there were a few times in the first half that they were able to find the space and they capitalized in one opportunity. They defended well, I thought that the guys just worked very hard. I mean, everyone put everything that they could. We had chances, we attacked, we possessed the ball. I thought that we dominated the match, but credit to them, they defended very well and the goalkeeper made some spectacular saves. These are the types of games that if we play the way we played today, not many times we are going to lose.” On the quick turnaround the team is facing… “First of all, we have to digest this game today. We have to look at this game and understand and assess what we need to assess and then right away prepare for Houston, which is a very good team. It’s another tough team that we have to play on the road and that’s it. These guys have done a tremendous job. I thought today was a very good match and now we need to prepare for Houston.” Portland Timbers defender Larrys Mabiala On his views on the game… “I think that globally, we had a very good game because we had the possession of the ball, we created chances, clear chances, and unfortunately today we were a bit unlucky. But I give credit to this team of Vancouver who played with heart, a lot of heart. They saved a lot of balls on the line and it’s been difficult for us to find the goal, but if we keep going this way we will win more games than losing.” On getting ready for the quick turnaround next week… “We’ll just keep our heads up and focus on the next game. We’ll analyze this game that we played today against Vancouver, where I think it’s just a little mistake in the first half where we were a little bit disconnected that cost us the game, but we’ll work on it and we’ll move forward to be ready to face Houston.”
