World’s his stage By LIZZIE McLEOD
PORT Macquarie performer Andrew Cousins is busking his way across the globe and writing award-winning songs along the way. Cousins last week won the Airlie Beach Festival of Music Song Writing Competition for his song Islands of Love. He sang his award-winning song live at the three-day Festival of Music during a performance of his trio, which includes Petar Cirovic and Ryan Granthan. Cousins is a born entertainer, according to his mum and schoolmates. “People at school used to call me an attention seeker,” laughs Cousins. “I love being in the spotlight. I can play to one person watching me just as much as one thousand people watching me. I was a born entertainer, that’s what mum always told me.” However, what some may not know about the singer/songwriter who attended Westport school, is that he spends four hours a day busking. And he’s made it quite the career. “I played in all the local venues growing up – Finnian’s, The Pier, The Beach House, everywhere,” he said. “I then moved to Perth and got a caravan and travelled around the country busking. The busking music supported the whole trip. I’m still doing it today - I’ve just come back from a busking trip in New Zealand.” Busking is not an easy act. The singer says it takes certain skill to create the audience. • Continued Page 3

Singer loves busking his way around the world
Some of the volunteers for the Australian Solar Muster for Vanuatu and (inset) a group of islanders from Tongoa now have solar electricity at several schools thanks to a group of volunteers from the Solar Energies Industries Association donating their second-hand equipment, money and time to help out after the South Pacific Island nation was devastated by Cyclone Pam in 2015
Helping out Vanuatu By SUE PATERICK
MACLEAY Valley company Self Sufficiency Supplies is working in conjunction with other solar energy companies throughout Australia to provide and install solar systems for schools on several far-flung islands in Vanuatu after a devastating cyclone last year. Cyclone Pam crashed into most of Vanuatu’s emerald isles on March 13 in 2015, killing 15 people and leaving 75,000 homeless. Wind gusts reaching 320 kilometres an hour, flattened houses and decimated much of the agricultural nation’s crops. After seeing the aftermath of such a catastrophic natural disaster, Rob Taber from New England Solar Power contacted Brian England and Diana Pook from Self Sufficiency Supplies with an idea. As both companies are members of the Solar Energies Industries Association (SEIA), his idea was to donate their second-hand solar equipment to Vanuatu because he knew its people lived a basic lifestyle. The call went out to other SEIA members and they were flooded with calls and emails wanting to help, and the Australian Solar Muster for Vanuatu was born. “People were really generous right from the start, offering not only their second-hand equipment but also paying for freight,” said
Diana, co-ordinator for the project. “From there word travelled fast and we were put in contact with a woman who runs an aid project to build schools in Vanuatu.” In June last year Isabella Henon flew Brian and Diana from Port Vila to Tongoa, one of the worst-hit islands, so he could assess what they needed. They couldn’t believe the destruction. “All their coconut and other food trees and crops were destroyed,” Diana said. “The people live off the land and eat what they grow, so there just wasn’t enough food. “They also keep pigs, chooks and some cattle, but there is no shop, only a weekly supply ship.” There are a dozen or so schools on Tongoa and none have power. After the cyclone some were totally destroyed. Brian designed the first solar systems for three schools that suited what they had to donate. It took from June 2015 until March 2016 to get all the donations, equipment and funds together to even export the solar products. Once in Vanuatu, Tongoa is a nine-hour boat ride from the capital Port Villa. Just to get to the weekly supply ship then load up all the solar equipment, plus enough food and water for 11 people representing eight SEIA companies, was an experience in itself. At the island, the unloading was done the island way from boat to dingy and then carried
through the water onto the sandy shore. “No solar panel was broken, suitcases wet or batteries sunk, thanks to the skilled crew of Seaside Services and the assistance from volunteers and the locals of Tongoa,” Diana said. To thank the SEIA volunteers when each project was finished, the islanders prepared a luncheon feast even though they had endured a year of hardship and still had very little food. The volunteers were also touched to receive flower chains and woven grass mats. “We were humbled by the warmth and care the islanders showed us and how happy they were despite having so much less than we do,” Diana said. “And we felt privileged because we were able to live alongside these wonderful people and experience their culture.” On Saturday November 12, a group of 12 volunteers from eight solar companies are heading to Ambae Island to install a solar system for a boarding school called St Patrick’s College. Other companies helping Vanuatu recover are Essential Energy, Selectronic, R&J Batteries, Bae, GNB Industrial Solar Power, Latronics and TLE Electrical. To find out more about this worthy project contact Diana on 0429631022 or visit the website on www.seia.org.au
• From Page 1 “There are a few rules you use to better yourself as a busker,” he said. “You need to have something to offer them. It’s kind of like an art form. You learn the places you go and what to sing and what time to sing them, and what kind of crowd you aim the songs to. It’s all about playing the right music and creating the right feel.” Cousins has many things on the horizon, including some more globetrotting. “The next biggest thing is the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Last year I came runner-up in the buskers’ competition,” he said. “I’m going to go back this year and dominate it and win it. “Myself and a mate are going to head to Hong Kong at the end of the year for a few weeks and try and busk over there. Hopefully more opportunities come up and we get recognised for our originality.” Cousins had some help with his winning song Islands of Love from his good friend Daniel Pye from DJ Elypsis. “He produced the beat and the whole feel to the song,” he said. “I wrote the lyrics and the melodies and gave him the chords and he made the whole music around it. I also had some help from Sean Carey from Sydney. He is the guy that mixes the songs. He made the song radio quality and mixed all the instruments together.” Keep up with our local rock star Andrew Cousins and listen to his award-winning song by visiting www.andrewcousins.bandcamp.com/ track/islands-of-love
$46m boost to schools MEMBER for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams has welcomed a $46 million NSW Government program to boost student learning through better technology in regional and remote public schools. “All 22 schools in the Port Macquarie electorate will share in the Connecting Country Schools program which will upgrade schools’ Wi-Fi access and internet capacity,” Mrs Williams said. “This upgrade will allow for wireless speeds four times faster than currently available. “To ensure schools make best use of their upgraded wireless and internet capability, they will be required to make an application and consult with their school community to identify how they intend to use the technology to improve teaching and learning.” The Connecting Country Schools program will invest up to $46m to boost wireless access and internet capacity in up to 13,000 learning spaces in around 900 regional schools.

We are good at digging, not making THIS week we have seen the government get in a tizzy over housing, with Scott Morrison leading the way. The problem with his ideas are the Australian economy. A close look will show that we are a Neanderthal with a shovel digging holes. Australia is very good at producing raw materials, but when it comes to a
finished product, all our bright ideas leave to find development investment overseas. So the only industry we have come to rely on is the housing industry. It fills in when the raw materials income slackens off, like today. Australia has a long history of digging and not making. Each time a leader tried they
have been shouted down. From Gov. Macquarie, wanting substantial buildings, forward to Chifley with the Holden, on to Keating with the chance to invest in superannuation, on to Gillard who tried to improve the education system. All were shouted down. So now with the government needing housing demand to prop
up the economy it resorts to huge unwanted immigration. Sorry Scott, 200 years of digging makes your parties up the creek without any other industries. And if you dare to try to right the problem, Australia will join Keating’s ‘Banana Republic’. B Avery Port Macquarie
Australia’s law societies call on PM to return funding to legal assistance THE heads of Australia’s eight law societies representing more than 60,000 practising solicitors have called on the Prime Minster to return funding to the legal assistance sector in an open letter. The legal assistance sector, which includes Legal Aid, the Aboriginal Legal Service and Community Legal Centres, will face a funding cut of 30 per cent or the equivalent of around $35 million from July 1 next year. Adequate legal assistance services are critical in ensuring fairness and efficiency in our court system and essential to providing access to justice for the most financially disadvantaged in our communities. The funding cuts by successive governments have had a huge impact
on the ability of the legal assistance sector to support those who are the most in need. Last year alone, community legal centres across Australia turned away 160,000 people due to reductions in capacity and staff numbers to deal with requests for assistance. Huge cuts to legal assistance services are taking place at a time when there is a growing ‘justice gap’ impacting the most vulnerable in our communities. The disadvantaged in Australia, particularly Indigenous peoples, are the worst-affected group experiencing unmet legal need. Community Legal Centres, in particular, have a strong connection to their local communities, which
enables them to formulate targeted responses to emerging community needs, such as domestic violence. They also have a historical role in addressing gaps in legal need which means they have specialisations in areas of law otherwise unavailable. The signatories to the open letter are calling on the Government to

TO Port Macquarie Hastings Council for the rather drab, uninteresting gardens at the top of Horton Street. Our Pioneer Cemetery Gardens used to be a colourful panorama of pretty shrubs and flowers. Why, oh why, have Council wasted so much money on drabness with boring native plants? So uninteresting at our entrance to the CBD. Our wonderful climate will grow almost anything, why not have a row of Lassiandra to start with and then add hard wearing tropical plants for some pizazz. Thumbs Up TO the two young men from the Backpackers Hostel who cheerfully changed my flat tyre when I was able to get it off the road out of busy traffic. Then they ushered me safely back into the traffic with a smile and a nod. Grateful thanks.
Thumbs Down TO the Port Macquarie Hastings Council or whoever run the ferries - $5 each way? To do the groceries as a pensioner and pay this fare each way is out of my league!
TO the Port Macquarie Hastings Council for wasting money on the new loud and annoying automated announcement system at the airport. Do we need loud announcements on the parking charges etc blaring out every five minutes? Surely the money would be better spent on seating inside and outside of the terminal?
Thumbs Up TO the young man named Adam working at Coles in Port Macquarie CBD. I couldn’t help notice how you went out of your way to help an elderly lady in aged care who was seeking information about the frozen meals. You didn’t just brush her off - you stood there and read the instructions for her. Well done son, good to see respect shown and I let him know it when he served me at the checkout.
Thumbs Down TO the vandals that hacked into the beautiful Norfolk Island pine in the playground at Pilot Beach. What pleasure did you get out of doing this senseless act? I can’t imagine I informed the council in the hope that the tree could be saved, but I think the damage might be too much. I hope you have some precious thing of yours destroyed by someone one day, that will be your karma.

AUSTRALIANS have been divided over the plebiscite bill on gay marriage for the past few months, and this week the senate defeated the bill. The upside? We the general public do not have to be responsible for the outcome of the free vote that will be made by parliament. Phew! Dodged a bullet there! Our MPs can take the heat; because there will be heat, either way. We can also rest on our laurels because we saved millions of dollars. The downside? We just gave away a bit more of our democratic rights. Whatever side of the fence you are on, you just lost your opportunity to vote for what you believe is right! I know the plebiscite bill would have been a costly exercise but at least the people would have voted; whatever the outcome. As it stands now, we have a bunch of people (government) so caught up in their own egos and agendas, making a decision that is going to offend people, either way and we will all suffer the repercussions. My thoughts? Marriage equality is a basic human right and I believe everyone should have the opportunity to pledge their life and love to each other; no matter who they are…as long as they are human. If we are going to talk about ‘marriage equality’ lets firstly get true ‘equality in marriage’ happening.

Residents rocked by quarry plan By NIKALA SIM IMAGINE the peaceful sound of silence, interspersed with birdsong, destroyed by the near-constant clang of blasting and rock crushing. That is the scenario faced by home-owners in Herons Creek, for the next 20 years, if a proposed hard rock quarry gets the green light. The boundary of the development, within Broken Bago State Forest, is less than a kilometre from the home of Alicia Bales. The mother of two has stood on the proposed site and had a clear line of vision to both her and her neighbours’ house, she said. “I have first-hand experience that noise travels clearly from the proposed quarry to our residence. “During recent harvesting activities in the state forest there were two occasions when my family was woken from sleep at around 5.30am by vehicle and machinery noise.” The principle activity at the Lookout Road quarry would be rock crushing with blasting around four times per year. Mrs Bales is one of dozens of Port Macquarie-Hastings residents calling for more people to ‘shout out’ to authorities that this development is not wanted, nor needed. “We want to be clear that this is not a ‘not in my backyard’ scenario’,” Mrs Bales said. “This is about ‘not in anyone’s backyard’. “We already have one quarry in our community, only 2km from the proposed development, extracting material from the same deposit. “The business case for this development has not been proven and it’s possible that the new jobs and product identified for sale will come at a cost to other local operators.” The CTK Natural Resources development application was to be determined, at a Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) meeting, in September but approval was not given and

The Herons Creek hard rock quarry instead a request for more information was issued. JRPP Chair Garry West said he found the information presented within the environmental impact assessment deficient. The panel unanimously requested a further noise assessment, cost/benefit analysis and research into alternative sites. Fellow Herons Creek resident Maureen Churnside said the addendum, made public on the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council website on October 18, sufficiently addressed only one of these requests. “Initially noise modelling only addressed the first of four stages of development,” she said. “The second addendum now addresses all stages but strangely noise appears to be less in this modelling.” A computer modelled noise assessment was only as good as the data it used, she said. “We have asked Forestry Corporation NSW for access to the site to perform our own scientific noise assessment but as of yet this has not been approved.”
The second addendum did not sufficiently address the cost of the development to the community, the benefit to the community, or alternatives to the site, Mrs Churnside said. The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council recommended approval of the development despite its assessment report highlighting insufficient justification for the need for an additional quarry in the area, insufficient economic impact assessment and no demonstration of the significance of the resource. “If we think of the CTK Natural Resources environmental impact assessment as a job application they would not even receive a phone call to proceed to interview,” Mrs Bales said. Council received 85 submissions after the first display of the development application. Submissions were now needed to address the second addendum. Interested parties have until November 18 to make their concerns heard. For more information or advice on how to prepare a submission phone 0412 594 084 or go to the Lookout Rd Quarry, Herons Creek Information facebook page.
SATURDAY will be a day of fun with an environmental bent. The Seaside Scavenge at Town Beach from 9am to 1pm is an opportunity to clear the beach of rubbish and use it as ‘currency’ to buy things. It is the first event of its kind in Port Macquarie and aims to raise awareness of the impact of ocean rubbish on sea creatures while doing something positive to tackle the problem. There will be workshops in ‘up-cycling’ and how to reduce your plastic consumption, live music and plenty of prizes. Junkfest in Wauchope, from 4pm, is a celebration of recycling and reuse. The Wauchope Arts Society event aims to make people think about waste and how we live, said President Krissa Wilkinson. “It’s about reducing waste and creating things from objects that may have once been seen as waste.” Workshops will be held throughout the event to make useful and beautiful items from clean materials that would have been destined for landfill. There will also be a workshop on how to clean without chemicals. It was vitally important to sow the seed of waste reduction and recycling in the minds of young people who are being born into a throwaway society, Ms Wilkinson said. “In reality they will be dealing with the mess we make of the world. We all need to learn skills and habits to reduce waste because each one of our gestures can have a great impact.” There will be plenty of live music and market stalls at the family-fun festival and Australian king of vaudeville Mick Conway will entertain with his National Junk Band from 7pm at a cost of $10. People are invited to bring food for a shared meal from 6-7pm before the show.

PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council is seeking community feedback on the issue of permanently embedding a special rate rise variation (SRV). In 2011, on top of the government-approved rate peg of 3.36 per cent, Council was given approval to make permanent a 7.3 per cent SRV and put in place a 4.43 per cent SRV over five years. This current SRV expires on 30 June 2017. Council would like to hear your opinion on its two proposed scenarios. The first would see a decrease in rates after June next year. The second scenario would see the current
4.43 per cent SRV made permanent with a minor increase related to the Independent and Regulatory Tribunal determined rate peg. The funds raised contribute to the maintenance of the local government road network, high traffic resurfacing, road rejuvenation and construction. You can have your say at a community forum to be held at the Glasshouse tonight (November 10) from 5.30-7.30pm. INCIDENCES of domestic violence in the Port Macquarie-Hastings and Macleay Valley areas are issues that communities and police continually work toward resolving. Data indicates that for the Port Macquarie-Hastings region, there has been a gradual decline in the number of DV incidents over five years. While in the Kempsey region, the reverse is the case. This trend is positive for the Port MacquarieHastings community; however further efforts need to go into ensuring it continues. And the contributing factors that are seeing Kempsey’s DV rates rise mean immediate steps must be taken to combat the problem. Last month the Coalition Government released the Third Action Plan which outlines what we can do together as a community to reduce violence against women and their children, intervene early, and better support survivors, both immediately and over the long term, to recover. Violence against women and their children is a serious issue in Australia. In 2015, the media reported that 80 women were killed by violence in Australia, with approximately three quarters killed by a current or former partner. One in six Australian women has experienced physical or sexual violence since the age of 15 by a current or former partner. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are 34 times more likely to be hospitalised due to family violence-related assaults than other women. This is unacceptable and we need to continue work to make a change. Backed by $100m in funding, the Government launched the Third Action Plan as part of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022. In addition to the $100m provided to support the implementation of the Third Action Plan, the Australian Government has also committed: • $100m for the Women’s Safety Package • ongoing funding of around $25m a year towards implementing the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010–2022. allan: In the late 70’s, I chose to get away from society to live free from stress, chemicals and high costs. I bought shares in 300 acres with five families and planted orchards, and built a house, roads and a dam. the lifestyle started out idyllically but drugs and immortality soon came into commune. Then a painful separation from the mother of my two children left me suicidal, a recluse and unmotivated. to relieve my distress I tried yoga, hard work, alcohol and motor bikes. I then met people from the Revival Fellowship who answered my questions about God and religion direct from the Bible. I went to a meeting to check it out and liked what I saw and was baptised. While I was baptised I asked God to prove He was real and to help me. I received the Holy Spirit and poke in tongues. That day I was healed from depression, substance abuse and loneliness. This life changing experience continues with me every day.

Port Macquarie area boosts NSW tourism
Harley, Max, Ikana, Cody, Bailey and teacher Mrs Gray with a selection of the 559 books donated to Lake Cathie Public School by The Westport Club
Kids get gift of reading By NIKALA SIM A MID North Coast school that opened with an empty library last year, has received a $10,000 donation of books. In its early days Lake Cathie Public School relied upon donations to fill shelves, Principal Jock Garvan said. Its 150 students will now be spoilt for choice thanks to The Westport Club Library Regeneration Program donation. “To have this wonderful gift of 559 brand new books from our friends at The Westport
Club is very much appreciated,” Mr Garvan said. Literacy was the foundation of education, the school Principal told gathered students last Wednesday. “Although reading may not be your favourite thing, being a good reader will help you with everything you do in your life,” said Mr Garvan. The Westport Club donation is part of its ongoing commitment to make a significant contribution to the quality of community life. Club Community and Sports Manager Jenny Edmunds said literacy and numeracy had been
identified as a core need in the Port MacquarieHastings community. To date their commitment in this area has exceeded $350,000, she said. “The Literacy Program is such an important part of what our club does in the community and The Westport Club’s team is proud of the success that this program has achieved so far,” Ms Edmunds said. “We have donated books to 18 schools and pre-schools in our region and the program plays such an important part in bringing the love of reading to the children”.
MINISTER for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres and Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams say successful events in Port Macquarie are helping drive regional tourism across NSW. “Tourism is going from strength to strength in Regional NSW with the highest absolute growth in visitors recorded across regional Australia, up by 1.2 million visitors and 4.5 million nights,” Mrs Williams said. “A total of 20.4 million visitors, an increase of 6.4 per cent of visitors made the choice to spend time in the stellar beauty and unique attractions of our regions, and further work to turbo charge regional tourism will see this trend continue. “The Port Macquarie electorate has been a great part of that growth with events including Ironman Australia and Tastings on Hastings. “The NSW Government’s $43 million investment across the next four years will revolutionise the way regional and rural areas attract visitors, including the creation of dedicated Destination Networks across NSW. “We’ve also expanded the Regional Flagship Events Program with a total of $6 million in funding over four years, and a new Regional Tourism Fund for marketing and product development is set to launch soon,” Mrs Williams said. “Through Destination NSW we are driving visitation and support for the regions through a robust calendar of events, marketing regional destinations across Australia and the world and establishing industry partnerships with the likes of airlines and accommodation providers.” Mr Ayres said there had been an exciting response to the Board positions for the Destination Networks with more than 600 applications received. “The overwhelming response from industry is a real vote of confidence that NSW needs this new tourism structure and appointments are on track to be complete by the end of this year,” Mr Ayres said.

BLOKE Helping youth find work
OUR

GEOFF SHELTON
How long have you lived in or around the Hastings/Macleay? My family first moved here in 1967 when I was 12. Chasing work I then moved to Sydney, Jervis Bay, South West Rocks and then eventually moved back to Port with my family in 1988 and have been here ever since. What do you love most about the Hastings/ Macleay? The climate, the people and the ocean. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I am the Head Teacher of Maritime Studies for North Coast TAFE. I love imparting my knowledge and experience on to others. It is very satisfying when past students come back and describe their new jobs - some driving commercial vessels all over Australia and others driving luxury vessels overseas. What do you like least about your work? After twenty five and a half years I still enjoy it. If I had to say something it would be that nowadays I spend more time in front of a computer instead of a classroom. How do you start your day? Coffee What do you do in your spare time? I am President of the Port Macquarie Blue Water Fishing Club and an active member of Port Macquarie Marine Rescue which both keep me busy so I go fishing, gardening, fishing, socialising, fishing, training, fishing, boating and sometimes I go fishing. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Firstly marrying my beautiful wife 33 years ago and secondly coordinating the search for three fisherman who capsized their vessel at 2.30pm on September 5, 2009. We located them at 9.30pm that night some 22 nautical miles (36kms) east of the Port Macquarie Bar after they had drifted 13.5 nautical miles (22Kms) down the coast clinging to their upturned vessel.
THE Coalition Government is getting young Australians ready and able to join the workforce through the innovative Youth Jobs PaTHprogramme. Youth Jobs PaTH (Prepare-Trial-Hire) will help increase young people’s job prospects by ensuring they are better prepared for the workplace and encourage more businesses to open the door to them. The three-step Youth Jobs PaTH programme is a key component of the $840 million Youth Employment Package announced in the 2016 Budget. The programme will help young people become work-ready through intensive preemployment skills training, delivering the workready skills that many employers have said young Australians often lack. Following the pre-employment training, up to 120,000 internships over four years will be available for young Australians to gain real work experience. Finally, an increased wage subsidy for employers who take on young jobseekers will provide an incentive for local employers to give young people the opportunity to obtain gainful employment. The PaTH programme is about getting young Australians ready, giving them a go, and getting them into a job. The Youth Jobs PaTH’s three flexible stages include: • Employability skills training which will begin in April 2017 to help prepare young job seekers for the workplace. The training will help
CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
young people better understand what employers expect of them and give them the skills, attitudes and behaviours required to be successful in a job. • Commencing in April 2017, up to 30,000 young jobseekers each year will be eligible to undertake an internship placement of four to 12 weeks. The internships will be voluntary and provide incentives of $1000 upfront to a business to host an intern and a $200 fortnightly payment to jobseekers on top of their income support. • From January 2017 a Youth Bonus wage subsidy of between $6500 and $10,000 will be available to businesses who take on an eligible young person as an employee or apprentice. This innovative program represents a substantial investment in young Australians and has received the support of not-for-profit groups such as the Brotherhood of St Laurence, the Council of Small Business Australia and mental health advocate and former Australian of the Year Professor Patrick McGorry AO. The Coalition Government is committed to addressing entrenched youth unemployment and breaking the cycle of welfare dependency. In
contrast, Labor is in lock-step with the unions in opposing the Youth Jobs PaTH. The Coalition is determined that younger generations are not confined to a lifetime of welfare dependency. However the first step must be to ensure that they have the basic skills required to enter the workforce. The PaTH programme has been developed by listening to what young people and employers have told us they need. Young Australians want the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to their communities but to do so they need the job-ready skills that employers demand – the PaTHprogramme ticks both boxes. The 2016-17 Youth Employment Package follows the Government’s earlier $331m investment in the Youth Employment Strategy, designed to help young people at increased risk of long-term unemployment improve their chances of finding and keeping a job. These measures, combined with existing initiatives (including the Transition to Work service, Empowering YOUthInitiatives and ParentsNext), will put young jobseekers on a positive pathway to finding and keeping a job, as we work towards growing our new economy. I encourage interested local businesses, families or young Australians to contact my office to obtain more information about the Youth Employment Package. Halloween not an American invention
I HEARD a lot of criticism of Halloween, mainly along the lines of “we don’t want these American ideas pushed down our throats”. The big question surrounded the expression “these American ideas”. Was Halloween American? Hallow derives from the old English halig, which as an adjective developed into modern English ‘holy’, My big dictionary dates hallow from the year 885 and says it referred to a saint. Halloween referred to the evening of hallow, “shortened from the all-hallow-even”. It apparently had little to do with America, or the United States of America. Halloween referred to the evening before All Saints Day. It is the name given to October 31, the day before All Saints Day. Halloween is its eve. Its origin goes back to pre-Christian days and earlier meanings. In the old Celtic calendar the year began on November 1, so the last evening of October was all saints night, I suppose the night when they thought about the saints they had overlooked during the year. Dr Rudolph Brasch in the Book of the Year, a book I gave my wife for Christmas in 1996 but to which I refer more than my wife does, says
my
LAURIE BARBER
All Hallows Day commemorates in England all the saints known and unknown. It was specially instituted to honour saints who had died without their sanctity being recognised. I was particularly interested in the expression “in England”. Brasch says the expression goes back to the seventh century. My big dictionary says that in 1556 an explanation was given that the night was Halloween and the next day was Hallowday. Dr Brasch explains that as the power of the sun waned with the onset of winter (remember this was in the northern hemisphere) people were afraid that life – not just the year -- was coming to an end. They imagined that life was haunted by ghosts and witches and more particularly by the dead. So they offered sacrifices to pacify the evil spirits. This was a long time ago. Then along came Christianity, which partly succeeded paganism.
Christianity succeeded in making this night of dread a night of jollification, particularly for the young. So, in modern times we see hordes of youngsters dressed up in unusual gear knocking on doors demanding a treat, usually in the form of sweets. Dr Brasch comments that “they are usually divorced from the macabre roots of the festival”. In 1808 J Jamieson writing in To Haud Halloween commented ”to observe the childish or superstitious rites appropriate to this evening”. My big dictionary comments on other words, such as hallower, a sanctifier or consecrator, hallowing, the sanctification, Hallow Tide, the first week of November, Hallow Day, hallowed, blessed, and the list goes on. But of all the comments, I could find little American to criticise, unless the Americans had little to do and thought promoting Halloween would be a good idea. I admit the Americans seemed to be keeping Halloween alive. Incidentally, hallow means a saint, but is little used after 1500. I found its first use was 885. The trend for “trick or treat” has extended to Australia. You can decide whether it’s good or bad. lauriebarber.com; lbword.com.au

Denton supports the rights of dying By NIKALA SIM A PASSIONATE advocate says watching his father die remains the most profoundly shocking experience of his life. Writer and broadcaster Andrew Denton has put himself at the coalface of the movement to lobby for assisted dying laws within Australia. The Sydney-sider has intensely explored the issue of euthanasia for people suffering with untreatable or terminal illness and will share his understanding in Port Macquarie on November 22. Mr Denton performed numerous interviews, to gain an insight into why good people die bad deaths, for his podcast series Better Off Dead. Many of these people had run out of options, he said, with most dying with incredible, and untreatable, suffering. “No matter how bad their suffering, and even if the option of assisted dying was available to them, nobody took the option easily,” Mr Denton said. “People cling to life like you can’t imagine.” Australia presently has no law to help the terminally or chronically ill die, Mr Denton said. The dying can die in the only way the law will allow – increased doses of morphine. His inspiration to speak on a subject as complex as assisted dying arose from watching his father die badly due to heart failure. “My dad, Kit, used to joke that he wanted to go by walking into the shallow end of an Olympicsized pool filled with single malt whisky and just keep walking - sadly that never happened. “With my sisters, Jo and Pip, I stood helplessly by as death picked up this strong man and shook him out until he was nothing.” Nothing would erase the images of his father’s last three days, Mr Denton said. To have a well-known speaker discuss the issue of assisted dying to an audience in Port Macquarie would raise its profile in the
Go Gentle Australia ambassador Andrew Denton will speak about assisted dying at the Glasshouse on November 22 community, Dying With Dignity NSW Port Macquarie member Annie Quadroy said. “I am absolutely delighted Andrew Denton has taken up this issue as his major work, and that he was able to find time in his busy schedule to come to Port Macquarie to speak,” she said. Assisted dying laws were a sleeper issue supported by 75 per cent of the population, Ms Quadroy said. “I know there is a lot of interest and a lot of support locally. I haven’t met anyone who has said they are against legislation to make an
assisted death legal. “At the end of the day it’s just legislation that gives you a choice – you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to.” Both Mr Denton and Ms Quadroy hope the discussion in Port Macquarie will inform the debate. “I hope it inflames people to speak out,” Mr Denton said. “Inflaming and informing – that’s the aim. “What’s happening in Australia is unjust, these laws need to change.
“I believe that people who are suffering unbearably and untreatably have a right to ask for help to die - simple as that.” Tickets are selling fast to An Evening With Andrew Denton on Tuesday, November 22 between 7.30pm and 9.30pm. To purchase your $45 ticket phone the Glasshouse box office on 6581 8888 or go to www.glasshouse.org.au For more information on assisted dying go to www.gogentleaustralia.org.au or www.dwdnsw. org.au

Gaining the skills to get you working BEING away from work because of child rearing, injury or family caring responsibilities can sometimes make it daunting to imagine having the right skills to start on the job again. So the community college has a whole range of special funded programs to help people rediscover their work ready mojo. Whether you’re wanting a white card for construction work, WHS (Workplace Health & Safety), First Aid or RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol), we can help you get started again with this special assistance package. Hidden treasures in our community RECOGNISING hidden treasures in Port Macquarie: Congratulations to Janette Hyde and Louella Polson who have been formally recognised for their hard work and dedication to others by being named on the 2016 Rural Women’s Hidden Treasures Honour Roll. Ninety women have been recognised in this year’s Honour Roll for the valuable volunteer work they do across regional NSW. Janette and Louella provide an enormous amount of support and are true treasures in our local community. They have been nominated by others who have seen first-hand how their important work has enabled those needing assistance to be supported or local groups requiring help to flourish. Janette and Louella thoroughly deserve this recognition and should be extremely proud of their nomination as they join this roll of highly regarded rural women. For more information visit: http://www.dpi. nsw.gov.au/rwn/activities/hidden-treasures Have your say on 10-year plan for improved air quality: I encourage the community to comment on the NSW Government’s proposed 10-year plan aimed at improving air quality across the state. The Clean Air for NSW consultation paper sets out the NSW Government’s priority areas for air quality improvement and outlines how industry, government, community groups and residents can work together to benefit the environment. This was an important plan for the state and the community. We want our community to be breathing the
cleanest air possible and this plan sets out a way forward to make sure we manage air pollution as the population increases. I urge everyone to look at the plan and provide feedback. Some priority actions identified in the Clean Air for NSW paper include: • A review of air quality monitoring networks to improve understanding of pollution issues. • Improved forecasting and advice during hazard reduction burning. • Hosting a Clean Air Summit in Sydney within six months to allow stakeholders the opportunity to provide direct feedback on Clean Air for NSW. NSW Environment Minister Mark Speakman said NSW should be pleased with its air quality and its record on clean air action. Public submissions are open until Friday, January 20 2017. The NSW EPA will manage the consultation process. Read the consultation paper and have your say at the EPA website: https://engage.environment. nsw.gov.au/EPAconsult/ or obtain a copy from the Port Macquarie Electorate Office, Suite 6/21 Grant Street.
MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey has announced a new, large-scale funding initiative has been launched that will benefit fish stocks by increasing the extent and quality of coastal fish habitats. “The Flagship Fish Habitat Grant program provides a rare opportunity to improve fish habitat and catchment health in your local creek, river or estuary,” Mrs Pavey said. “Funded by the Recreational Fishing Trust, this program is another excellent example of how recreational fishing fees are helping to support and improve fisheries in NSW. “We want to increase our fish populations by restoring degraded fish habitats. “Flagship Grant projects will generate fantastic results along the NSW coast, addressing riverbed and bank erosion, fish passage and poor water quality from the disturbance of acid sulphate soils”. Proponents can apply for ‘Flagship Fish Habitat Grants’ to a maximum of $400,000 per annum for each project, for up to three years. This will support the planning and site
preparation necessary to fix important local fish habitats. The program will allow applicants to tackle sites which have been difficult to rehabilitate due to their complexity, including funding for required environmental assessments and investigations. All money raised by the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee is placed into the Recreational Fishing Trusts and spent on improving recreational fishing in NSW. Mrs Pavey said, since 2009, the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts have invested over $3.6 million into the existing ‘Habitat Action Grants’ which has attracted significant additional investment of around $11 million of in-kind and cash contributions delivering improved fish populations in NSW through on-ground improvements. Applications for Flagship Grants opened on November 3 and close on 23 December 2016. For more information about the program, contact a Department of Primary Industries Fisheries Manager on (02) 6626 1396.

ORRCA President Ronny Ling said the organisation had been working with rescue groups worldwide to ensure their training methods included the latest techniques. This was to improve rescue success rates, he said.

“The key to success is preparation. Our training workshops cover biology, first aid and care, as well as practical training for our members to best deal with the unique pressures of a whale stranding incident.” Voluteers have responded to a significant amount of whale and dolphin incidents and seal haul-outs over recent months. They have also gathered data for research from marine mammals in the Port Macquarie area. “But we still need more trained rescuers in Port Macquarie and the Mid-North Coast,” Mr Ling said. Effective rescue procedures had taken quite a

long while to perfect, he said, with few animals saved even into the mid-1980s. Australia now plays a leading role in the development of whale rescue techniques. ORRCA will provide training for local NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service staff at the workshop. The ocean marine mammal rescue training day will begin at 8.30am and bookings must be made to secure your place. ORRCA membership, which covers administration and insurance costs, is a requirement of the workshop which will cost $75.
A WAUCHOPE man will lop his locks to ensure Christmas is bright for participants of a volunteer-run program. Steve Douglas was born with a disability which has seen him confined to a wheelchair for the last year. The reliance upon people doing things for him and frustration at being confined have prompted him to raise funds for children in a similar situation. “Being in a wheelchair is getting to me so it must be really frustrating for someone who has been in a wheelchair all their life,” the 59-year-old said. Wauchope and Port Macquarie Riding for the Disabled President Kevin Waldron said children in wheelchairs are used to looking up at people so being on a horse and looking down makes them feel like kings and queens. “Some of these kids just smile the whole time,” Mr Waldron said. “One young, profoundly disabled girl relaxes so much she goes to sleep. Mr Douglas has been busy generating support from local businesses in advance of his head shaving event on November 25 at the Wauchope RSL. Monaghans Fuel Supplies, Coppy’s Butcher Block and Colonial Bakehouse Wauchope all have donation tubs in store. Donations can also be made to Coastline Credit Union BSB 721-000 ACC 100186801.

Top chefs love Burrawong Gaian By SUE PATERICK WITH chefs like Kylie Kwong, Neil Perry and Colin Fassnidge singing their praises, Burrawong Gaian is making a name for itself with free-range poultry in the restaurants of Sydney, Byron Bay and Melbourne. This Macleay Valley business produces premium-quality, pasture-raised meat chickens, ducks, geese and Guinea fowl, plus available game birds and free-range duck eggs. The birds are raised under the gum trees in a natural open environment so they can forage, and are free from chemical additives, artificial hormones and medications. Beth and Hayden McMillan bought Poultry at Burrawong in Barraganyatti in 2012 because it already had a good name as a premium poultry business, plus it had a processing plant. They didn’t have far to move, having first established themselves on a property at Kundabung. This enterprising couple moved to the Macleay Valley in 2004 because they loved its pristine beauty and the climate. Their sustainable and organic farming practices began with chickens, which they had processed at Burrawong. While still at Kundabung, they started Gaian Poultry and Game in 2009. Their new business, Burrawong Gaian, really took flight when Neil Perry started using their produce. “It took us a while to establish ourselves, and it is always a work in progress, but Neil Perry really helped,” Beth said. On their tranquil farm they have 5000 chickens and up to 4000 ducks clucking, scratching and splashing in green paddocks. To add to their flock, they are about to start breeding Emden geese. The McMillan’s also support the Rare Breeds Trust and are accredited with Human Choice. Their greatest achievement so far is being
Beth and Hayden McMillan from Burrawong Gaian also sell free-range duck eggs as well as the finest poultry and game birds able to provide both consumers and chefs with premium, quality birds that are humanely and ethically raised, produced and processed. “We ensure the birds have the best life we can give them because we control the whole process,” Beth said. Her advice to anyone starting a farming business is to do your homework first. “Having consistent produce for a small producer is essential too,” she added. “And so is having a client base at the start because it can be very stressful if you have great produce and no one to sell it to.” Beth is sharing her story and advice at the
third annual Mid North Coast Food Forum being held at Bonville Golf Resort on Monday, November 14. Burrawong Gaian’s products will also be featured on the Harvest Table lunch menu for both entrées and main meals. Kempsey Shire Council is one of five Mid North Coast Councils sponsoring the gastronomic event, which will be an opportunity for producers, restaurateurs, food wholesalers and retailers, and people wanting to start a business to learn, share and network. By LIZZIE McLEOD PORT Macquarie band ‘Hunt for Home’ is using music to make a difference in the lives of others. The band has always reached out to support great causes in the Port Macquarie area and has now come together again to help a young boy named Caleb. Caleb is a 10-year-old from Port Macquarie who recently had surgery on a brain tumour. As a result of the surgery, Caleb suffered some paralysis on one side of his body and needs specialist equipment. As a result, his mother has had to cease work to look after him and the family is struggling financially. A ‘Rock for Caleb’ concert will be held from
7pm at The Pier, Port Macquarie on November 17 to help Caleb and his family through this tough time. The night of entertainment will feature top local bands, including alternative rock band ‘Hunt for Home’ and supported by front line artist Angus Gill. ‘Hunt for Home’ members are local to Port Macquarie and Lake Cathie and are soon to release their first EP and tour with an international artist. There is a $10 minimum donation fee at the door for ‘Rock For Caleb’ with all proceeds going directly to Caleb and his family. Under 18s must be supervised. To keep up to date with Caleb’s journey, search ‘Caleb’s Journey’ on Facebook and click ‘Join’.

Key investment issues to consider MAVEN ADVISORS BEFORE you buy an investment property it pays to have a think about not only where to hold the property, but the future implications in relation to tax, finance and cashflows. This will put you in the best tax position going forward by thinking about issues relating to your investment today. Here are some of the more important things to consider: 1. Decide on the right legal ownership: Each investment requires an analysis of the purpose, your financial position, risk exposure
and other personal circumstances. Consideration also needs to be balanced against the associated costs of the ownership structure. This will help identify who will benefit most from the purchase of the property. Ownership can be held solely, jointly, company or Partnership, Trust or Self-Managed Super Fund. All have different tax treatments and SMSF’s have additional regulations that need to be adhered to so it’s important to know all the facts from a SMSF Specialist Advisor. 2. Decide on the right financing structure: Interest expense is only deductible to the extent the borrowed moneys are used for the
PROFESSIONAL PERONALISED AND
investment property. Be wary of using redraw facilities which mix private and investment transactions. This will create an apportionment burden and could potently cost you lost interest deductions. Also be wary of home loan reduction schemes that increase the interest costs each year. These will attract the attention of the ATO due to its tax avoidance schemes. 3. Land Tax: Land tax is a state tax and will vary depending on which state the property is purchased, so ensure you ask the question and monitor if you are likely to exceed the relevant states threshold. Further, the entity structure that holds the legal ownership of the property will determine if there is any threshold exemption available at all. 4. Consider Capital Gains Tax: Depending on the structure and how long the property has been held determines what CGT Concessions are available to you when you sell the investment. Take this into account when considering how long you intend to hold the property and what level of income your likely to be earning when you sell. Further, if you mix the use of the property between your primary residence and as an investment property this can further effect the
capital gains tax you pay. 5. GST: There’s different GST treatment on both the purchase and ongoing GST claims relating to the property. This can depend on a number of factors including on whether the property is residential, new residential or commercial properties. You need to ensure the contracts are clear and your aware of your obligations. 6. Tax Benefits: Identifying what costs are deductible and what expenses count towards the cost of the investment will depend on the purpose on which you purchase the property. If you are purchasing the property to develop rather than use to provide rental income this will have an effect how associated costs are treated and your taxed on any gains. Maven Advisors can provide you with independent advice about the critical issues to consider before you buy your investment property. WEEKLY ‘Rat Pack’ at Glasshouse By LIZZIE McLEOD
IT has sold out in the US and the UK and now it’s time for Port Macquarie to see what the world has been raving about. ‘The Rat Pack From Vegas’ show is making its rounds around the globe and has received unbelievable feedback from audiences. The live concert production takes the audience on a journey through time to the music of the most legendary performers in the history of entertainment - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr, better known as ‘The Rat Pack’. “We’re recreating not only the music and the humour,” explains Johnny Edwards, who plays the King of Cool, Dean Martin. “We’re creating also the friendship that Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr had.” Johnny has performed in Port Macquarie before, loves the interactive crowds and especially loves the after-parties. “What I loved about the place, was that everything could be discussed over a pint of

And the Australian audiences have been the best at being part of the show. They are not afraid to yell things up at us. That’s why we’re so looking forward to it, this is our fifth time back since 2010.” The true passion and love the performers have for their characters started at a young age. “I remember as a child watching the Dean Martin Variety Show and all the ‘Martin and Lewis’ movies,” said Johnny. “I always loved the fact that Dean was a guy who was impeccably dressed, good looking, always got the women, had a great sense of humour and he could sing.” Johnny performs with Robbie Howard as Sinatra and Nicholas Brooks as Sammy. ‘The Rat Pack’ will be coming to town Wednesday November 16 at the Glasshouse Port Macquarie from 8pm. Port Macquarie’s new pump track at Wayne Richards Park
Council project gets jump started MOUNTAIN bikers are now benefitting from Council’s road works program, with excess materials from two major projects being used in the construction of Port Macquarie’s new ‘pump track’ and dirt jumps facility at Wayne Richards Park. The need for this facility was identified within Council’s adopted Master Plan for Wayne Richards Park, with the pump track being opened last week as a valuable and popular addition to the recreational and sporting facilities being provided across the Port Macquarie-Hastings. The pump track is great fun for riders of all abilities, and is the latest craze to hit the mountain biking world. It includes a loop of
Lake Cathie Men’s Bowling Club
PRESIDENT Gary Blackler recently announced Gaven Whalley and the team from One Agency North Haven are to be major sponsors of the club. It is great that a successful local business is supporting our Club and it is hoped that the arrangement will continue for a long time. Needing five shots to win on the last end, the team of Keith Woods, Helene and John White Jnr, and Patricia O’Brien did just that to move on to the next round of the Mixed Fours Championship. It was a good game played under extremely difficult conditions. Winners on Monday were D. Rose, Mary Simmonds and Russell Simmonds while the team of Ann Norberry and Ken Norberry collected the lucky losers prize. On Thursday B. Hobby, A. Crigg, Bob Hoban and Rob Eldridge were grinners as were the runners-up Bruce Roberts, Peter Forsythe, Bill Stewart and Chica Batts. Graham Howard, Ray Stokmanis, Laurie Bayliss and Des Hancox were lucky enough to lose and take the lucky loser’s prize home. The wind on Saturday was horrific and everyone had an excuse with bowls being blown all over the place but that did not deter Roger Miles and Gavin Law who were the rink winners. Les Perry and Syd Cochran came second in their game. Gordon Gray and John Morgan fluked a win but did not profit at all. Do not forget to allow for the General Meeting after bowls on Thursday. Support our hard-working committee and your club with your presence.
Wauchope Mixed Bowls
ON a very smoky Monday 41 bowlers were on the rinks for sevengames of triples, one with a swinger. Good to see Ted Gisby and Rhonda Bloomfield back on the greens. Rink 11 made the most noise with Col’s team picking up four on the last end to beat Rosie’s team to win by 1. The lucky winners with a margin of 15 but not the largest on the day on rink 12 were Sylvia Wells, Kaye MacKenzie and skip Sally Webber. The
smooth dirt mounds that are ridden without pedalling. “The material used to construct the pump track was sourced from two Council projects, the upgrade to Hastings River Drive, and the new roundabout at the Lake Rd/Blackbutt Rd intersection,” said Council Acting Director Gary Randall. “Council was able to use this excavated natural material, which was unsuitable for road construction works on the two projects, and it’s great to see the excess materials being reused for further community benefit.” By working closely with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Council has been able to reuse stockpiled materials and avoid the environmental and
financial expense of disposal by other means. Hastings Valley Mountain Bike Riders, who are facilitating the development, said that the new pump track has been extremely well received by its members and they are extremely appreciative of the efforts of Council in helping get this project off the ground. Port Macquarie’s new pump track is free to use. “The beneficial reuse of the material used at the Wayne Richards Park pump track has saved the community more than $200,000 in disposal costs,” said Mr Randall. To find out more about Council’s road works program and recreational facilities and to have your say about current and planned projects visit pmhclistening.com.au
runners-up on Rink 5 were Pat Kirkman Doreen McWhirter and skip Ann Steel. The consolation prize went to Rink 10 Dianne Edwards, Kaye Bassett and skip Scott McKen

SATURDAY, in almost gale-force winds, we saw a gripping final in the Mixed Pairs Championships. Due to the conditions it was not only hard to find the right grass but weight was also a problem with quite a few bowls ending in the ditch. Eventually Heather Bartlett and Paul Harrison overcame a determined Marie Winter and Ken Ansley 21-12. In conjunction with the final there was also a mixed pairs gala to keep them company. The winners with 2 wins and a margin of +9 were the fast improving Brigid Loane and the consistent Tim Renshall.
