‘Shame them’ Petrol price fury grows
Port Macquarie motorist Russell Delforce – “Let’s upset the applecart”
By CAROLINE STRAINIG PETROL price fury continues to grow as Port Macquarie prices remain high despite the massive drop in the price of world oil and much lower prices in metropolitan regions. Motorists were incensed to hear people were buying fuel for around the $1 a litre mark in Sydney while it was still over $1.30 a litre here, which was an improvement on pre-Christmas prices but still much more expensive. For motorists already fed up with paying high prices all the time, the failure to pass on the drop in the price of oil immediately and in full was the last straw. Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce president Hadyn Oriti lodged a complaint with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) last week. Port Macquarie resident Russell Delforce also complained to the ACCC and the Independent
“The petrol stations here are just ripping off Port people because they can,” he said. He urged at least one petrol station owner to step up to the plate and “give motorists a fair go”. “I know I will support anyone who drops their prices, and I’m sure everyone else would too. It’s time to upset the applecart. “I will be buying my petrol elsewhere whenever I can until then.” Another motorist who owned several petrol stations in Port Macquarie from 1990 to 1997 and also in Sydney, Graham Gilbert, said the high prices could not be justified, even if transport costs had doubled since his time. “Back in my day we had eight service stations in Port,” he said. “We just don’t have enough

competition now. “At the present moment they would have to be making 25-30c a litre. They are profiteering. “It’s time to shame them.” Asked for comment about the situation in Port Macquarie, the ACCC said they had received a direction from Minister for Consumer Affairs Bruce Billson to undertake more timely and targeted monitoring of the fuel industry. “The new direction empowers the ACCC to take a close look at geographic areas that are of particular concern,” a spokesperson said. He could not say if Port Macquarie was one of those areas, but said the ACCC would provide further information on its new reporting framework later this month.
Page 5 My Place film entries to screen tonight
He added fuel prices were generally higher in regional Australia because of lower population and demand leading to less competition, the higher cost of transport and less demand for high-margin convenience items like drinks, food and newspapers. NRMA deputy-president Wendy Machin also could not justify the huge difference in petrol prices between Port Macquarie and even some other regional areas. “Transport costs just don’t explain it,” she said, when asked by the Independent. “Motorists deserve better and have a right to feel incensed by the gap between local prices and Sydney prices.”

Cannabis plants A WOMAN has been issued with a court attendance notice because of cannabis plants allegedly found at a Port Macquarie house. Senior Constable Stephen Cherry said about 1.30pm on Friday police attended an address in Chalmers Street in relation to information received that cannabis plants were being grown in the rear yard. “At the location police spoke to the 20-yearold female occupant, who showed them to the rear yard,” the Snr Constable said. “Nineteen cannabis plants were located either growing in the ground or in black plastic pots ranging in height from 10cm to one metre. “The plants were seized with the occupier being advised she will be issued with a court attendance notice to appear at the Port Macquarie Local Court on February 25.”
Yes to airport funding
By CAROLINE STRAINIG THE Independent decided to take to the streets last Thursday, Friday and Sunday to conduct an informal price survey, following numerous email and telephone complaints from incensed motorists. As you can see from the results of our survey, the fluctuation in prices was remarkably small, and all were substantially above the city. The Independent asked several service station attendants for comment without success. One independent operator, who did not wish to comment by name, indicated that if he cut prices further and threw down the gauntlet to the big operators he would be just cutting off his nose to spite his face. “Sure people might come to you for a while, but then the others will drop theirs and the customers will go back to them and all you have done is hurt your own bottom line,” he said. BP Lighthouse was charging $137.9 for unleaded, $141.9 for ultimate diesel, and $149.9 for ultimate 98. Woolworths Caltex at Settlement City was charging $132.9 for E10 unleaded, $148.9 for Vortex diesel, $145.9 for Vortex 95 and Vortex 98 with a 4c a litre discount for customers with a Woolworths Everyday Rewards Card Caltex in Port Macquarie was charging $130.9 for E10, $132.9 for unleaded and $142.9 for Vortex diesel. PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council will be looking to participate in an expressions-ofinterest process for regional airport funding. “The airport is a vital asset to our community and a key piece of infrastructure for the future economic development of our area,” Mayor Peter Besseling said. “Council will investigate the criteria associated with any grant application and how this might be used to support infrastructure improvements at the airport site. “The airport master plan has been adopted by council and outlines a 20-year vision for the airport, which underpins our region’s growth, economic development and tourism potential. “Additional grant funding opportunities for the airport are considered and pursued by council as we seek to ensure our airport is the premier gateway to the NSW Mid North Coast.” Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams announced last week local councils would be able to apply for up to $50 million in state government funding. Applications close on March 31.

THE Young family carnival that has run at Westport Park in Port Macquarie every Christmas for more than 40 years – delighting tourists and locals alike - came to a sad and early end on Saturday night. Long-time co-owner Margaret Young had been battling cancer for some time, but her condition deteriorated rapidly just before Christmas. Margaret was treated for some time in hospital in Port Macquarie but when her condition continued to worsen she was airlifted to Sydney and then transferred to another hospital near her home late last week. Normally the carnival continues until after Australia Day, but the family and carnival staff decided to leave early in the circumstances to be with Margaret.

Was that RAN or RANT? THE Residents Action Network should be renamed RANE - residents against nearly everything - or even RANT after their rant about dogs in the Independent (Dog owners taken to Task, page 5, January 8). Whatever happened to merry Xmas and happy new year? People are on holidays with their dogs, travel in caravans and do just about everything with their dogs these days. Myself, our three children and nearly all our friends have dogs that are part of the family and go on most outings and never have we had an incident that inconvenienced others. They are fun-loving animals with responsible owners in the main. Straw survey? Is that where you dig up as much negative info as you can

Letter of the Week
Drivers, slow down – please!
I KNOW this is too long for the thumbs column, but I would like to send a big thumbs-down to drivers who constantly overtake me speeding while I ride the work scooters in the 50km/h single-lane zone on Lord Street/Kennedy Drive. It has happened to me three times now. I would like to remind drivers that it is only 50km/h, not 70km/h+, and is a residential area. What you are doing is reckless driving/speeding/tailgating. You could have a head-on accident with another car coming in the opposite direction because it’s hard to see, not to mention nearly crash into cyclists, pedestrians and residents’ homes while doing these illegal road-rage actions. What are you in such a hurry for? Before getting overtaken illegally, I get tailgated to the point I can see the details on the car driver’s face. The technical rule in normal conditions is a three-second gap and in night time/hard-to-see conditions three or more seconds. No one does this. Imagine when you crash into the back of me when I need to do an emergency stop. You have a chassis protecting you fitted with seatbelts and airbags. Me? I’ll be thrown off the scooter and maybe knocked unconscious. How does that make you feel - all because you wanted to speed/tailgate me, urging me to go faster? I also would like to mention that it isn’t on the broken lines but the double unbroken lines that these overtaking incidents keep on happening. That’s even worse because you’re not supposed to overtake on double unbroken lines. On my commuter motorcycle you don’t do these actions, but as soon as I ride the company scooter it happens. I even ride in the middle of the lane/near the centre of the

unbroken line just to make clear I am riding on the public road and not to the left side of the lane, indicating that you can overtake. Any scooter/motorcycle rider is legally allowed to use any part of their lane. That is a RMS NSW fact printed in the riders’ handbook. I also buffer and road craft around cars coming in the opposite direction while riding, taking into account that I don’t have a chassis protecting me but only my protective gear. I can’t do this when I am being tailgated because it gives any driver initiative to overtake when really I’m just buffering/road crafting. I would like to also mention that it isn’t provisional drivers/riders who do this but middle-aged to older road users who do this. Provisional drivers/riders just tailgate me. I also have my camera constantly recording, so every incident is on film, so next time your number plate will be reported to the police as enough is enough. It is becoming too dangerous for all road users as well as me all because no one will slow down. Perhaps if a police officer is reading this, the next time they are on duty they could park a Highway Patrol vehicle on the 50km/h Lord Street/Kennedy Drive single-lane zone and book all the speeders/tailgaters because it’s the only way drivers/riders seem to learn when they lose their licence/receive fines/gain demerit points. My Place entries to screen tonight LAST year council called on residents to express their opinions about where they live audio-visually. The #myplace short film competition was about our community celebrating the place where they live and ways to improve it. The competition has now closed and all entries will be screened at the official film premiere held at in the Hay Street forecourt (outside the Glasshouse) from 7.45pm tonight, Thursday, January 15. The competition required entrants to create a threeminute film about a place in their community that was important to them and how they would like to see it changed. Through the filming process, council’s place-making team has captured useful information about the various community ‘places’ people identify with, along with ideas on how these places could be developed. Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor Peter Besseling said a short film competition was a great way to gauge community attitudes and ideas for ‘our place’. “Everyone has a favourite place and most of us also have opinions on how it could be improved,” Cr Besseling said.
“I’ve watched the films; I found them to be very well done and informative, so come down on Thursday night and see what the films have to say about our place.” Selected entries will be also be posted to council’s Pinterest, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter pages. Prize categories: • Primary School: a GoPro film-making package and a $500 ‘My Place is Ace’ place-making grant towards making their project happen • Secondary School: a GoPro film-making package and a $500 ‘My Place is Ace’ place-making grant towards making their project happen • 18-25 years: iPad and a $500 ‘My Place is Ace’ placemaking grant towards making their project happen. • Open (25 years and above): iPad and a $500 ‘My Place is Ace’ place-making grant towards making their project happen • People’s Choice Award: $500 My Place is Ace’ placemaking grant towards making their project happen The screening is open to the public; BYO chair. New faces at council
TWO new faces are joining the team at Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. Rebecca Olsen has been appointed as director of corporate and organisational services and Tricia Bulic as director, community and economic growth. General manager Craig SwiftMcNair said council had 45 applicants across the two roles and some very strong candidates. “I’m thrilled that with these appointments our executive team now includes a strong mix of experience gained in local government, executive management in other sectors and
a vision for future organisational improvement,” Mr Swift-McNair said. Rebecca Olsen has been acting as the director of commercial services and industry engagement since February of last year. Her 15 year career in local government has included various finance roles at Dubbo City Council before moving to Port Macquarie in 2004 to the role of financial operations manager and then to the group manager of commercial and business services role with council. Tricia Bulic was the general manager of Manning Base Hospital, responsible for an $80 million budget and a staff of
around 600. Her career in senior management roles across the health sector in NSW and Victoria will see her bring a strong sense of community, corporate and financial accountability to the areas of economic development, community place and integrated planning within her new council portfolio. “Both directors will be on board by early February and I’m confident that we will very quickly implement the divisional realignment and get to work on key strategic issues such as the preparation of the 20152016 operational plan,” Mr SwiftMcNair said.

MY take on the bulky goods rezoning proposal on John Oxley Drive is that we need to be very, very careful that this proposal does not suck the life out of the Port Macquarie industrial area through considerable increase in traffic pressures, most particularly on Lake Road. Traffic lights at the Wrights Road intersection have been proposed by Roads and Maritime Services as a solution but I don’t see it that way. Traffic lights will only ‘regulate’ traffic flow. But this ‘regulation’ will only queue the traffic and ensure all those using this intersection will be able to safely cross through the roundabout. This of course will not improve the capacity of the road system to accommodate the substantially larger volumes of traffic most likely to occur as a result of new developments such as Charles Sturt University, student accommodation in Wrights Road, an expanded base hospital, substantial

What do you love most about the Hastings? I find most of the people are very friendly and will get in and help when the chips are down. The next thing I love is just the area and the rivers that feed the Hastings and the hinterland. Growing up here all I did after school was go fishing and hunting. We made our own canoes and paddled our way to the extremities of the Hastings River, Wilson River, Maria River, Pipers Creek and Limeburners Creek. It was a fantastic place to grow up and still is a fantastic place to live. Where do you work and what do you love most about your work? I work as a plasterer. I love helping the young blokes learn how to do their job and to see them with a smile on their face when they have finished a job by themselves which is of a high standard. The next is to walk into a house full of sticks and turn it into a house of rooms that the owner loves. What do you like least about your work? This is short and easy to answer: when the builder or owner fails to pay for the work done! How do you start your day? My day starts about 3am every day so I can get all my paperwork done. At five past 7am everything gets hectic and you don’t get any orders out at all. What do you do in your spare time? Fishing and hunting - nothing better than being out at sea or up the river at sun up. It’s the best time of the day. Hunting pigs out west is fantastic fun and you are getting rid of a big pest. Tell us some other interesting facts about yourself. As a young fella I was in the Scouts and I went to the 13th world jamboree where I climbed to the top of Mount Fuji. At this event I also met the Crown Prince of Japan on the bullet train. Later in life I played cricket with my son and won a B-grade premiership, which was probably the proudest moment of my life. How do you like your coffee? Don’t like coffee - love my tea. The best tea is billy tea. What makes your day? Pulling in a 15 to 20kg dew or lifting my crab trap to see a couple of 2kg bucks looking at me. After hunting for about two to three hours, I like getting a bead down and getting a 100kg black bore.

ONE of the Port Macquarie Pink Ladies has been honoured with the United Hospital Auxiliaries (UHA) of NSW’s highest award. Life membership of the UHA was conferred on 89-year-old volunteer Freda Weidenbohm, who joined the Port Macquarie Pink Ladies four decades ago. The award was presented at the function by the UHA’s regional representative, Phillipa Passfield. Mrs Passfield described Mrs Weidenbohm’s service as “remarkable”. “At 89 years of age, Freda is still volunteering, helping out with raffle tickets and remains our branch patron,” Mrs Passfield said. “She has worked on the wards selling papers, magazines, toiletries, lollies and drinks, and freshening up the patients’ flowers for 30 of the 39 years she has been a Pink Lady. “Freda worked in the hydrotherapy pool once a week helping stroke patients. She has been a roster clerk, branch president, secretary and publicity officer and a mentor to new members.”
ON Christmas Day my wife and I drove several hours to a country town to visit a distant relative who, because of a physical condition, had spent most of her adult life in a nursing home. She had earlier sent a card saying the previous Christmas Day had been very lonely for her because, although she had close relatives just down the street, not one had visited her on Christmas Day. “I hope this year I will see one of my family on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day,” she said. Several years ago a late-morning visit to the cemetery in this same country town showed that many family groups had not forgotten those no longer with them. A couple, possibly honouring a promise made, sat on the grass near one headstone having a beer in the company of a friend or relative who had died during the year. However, a moving sight, admittedly several years ago, was that at one of the most recent graves to be established in the cemetery. The grave site was still loose dirt. A teenage boy sat in the dirt, his eyes fixed on the mound covered with flowers. A man and a woman stood behind him, oblivious to the dust borne across the open paddock by the hot summer wind. In the 30 minutes in which I was in their presence not a word was spoken,

It was a family tragedy - the death of her daughter - that brought Mrs Weidenbohm into the Pink Ladies, but it has been the friendships and a passion for helping others that have kept her there. “When we lost our daughter to cancer, the Pink Ladies president at the time, Margaret Nolan, suggested I join to keep busy,” Mrs Weidenbohm said. “The Pink Ladies really helped me and many became close friends. “I have always been proud to be a Pink Lady – they are the most wonderful people.” After 39 years as a hospital volunteer, Mrs Weidenbohm recalled two memorable events in particular – the Newcastle Earthquake in 1989 and the closure of Hastings District Hospital in 1994. “I remember when the Newcastle earthquake struck; we lost power at the hospital so the lifts weren’t working. The Pink Ladies formed a human chain up the stairwell to get lunches to patients on the top floor. “We also helped out with the enormous task of transferring patients from Hastings

except for three from the man: “What a waste”. His quiet momentary sobbing was accompanied by a supporting hand from the boy and the woman. The grave was occupied by a 17-year-old boy shot dead by an intruder as he had studied for the Higher School Certificate only a few weeks earlier. No doubt scenes like that were repeated around the country on Christmas Day, but most of us tend to overlook the fragility of life and to take for granted the good things we have. On Christmas Day, 2014, I thought of that distant relative in her bed at the nursing home hoping that at least someone would visit her on Christmas Day. Family is a precious possession. To most of us family means mum and dad and a couple of kids, along with probably grandparents and perhaps a few uncles and aunts and in-laws who visit us occasionally. The earliest use in print of family that I could find came in 1425. It could refer

to descendants from a common ancestor, or servants, or a collection of people or animals living together. It derives from the Latin familia. English borrowed the word around the turn of the 15th century. A related word is familiarity. A commonly heard expression, with some relevance to Christmas, is “the family that prays together stays together”. The Oxford Library of Proverbs says the saying was invented by Al Scalpone, a professional commercial writer, and was used as the slogan of the Roman Catholic Family Rosary Crusade by Father Patrick Peyton, with its first use on March 6, 1947, during the radio program Family Theatre of the Air. Christmas means many things to different people, but I think of that woman, not that old, in the nursing home spending all her life in bed and hoping that at least one of her siblings would visit her. Incidentally, I wrote a few years ago about an old woman who spent her adult life visiting her daughter in the same nursing home. The daughter died recently. Her mother now lives in that nursing home. lauriebarber.com; lbarber@midcoast. com.au

Who you gunna call? Graffiti Busters, of course! “The Kempsey and Port Macquarie teams will be doing some more training in January to fully skill the Port Macquarie team for the work ahead. “The two councils have agreed to continue to work co-operatively to address the problem of graffiti on public and private property. “Council has located a vehicle for the project and anticipates that the team will be out and about in the region with solvents and cleaning equipment in the near future.”
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council has unveiled a new weapon in the war against graffiti – the Graffiti Busters. A council spokesperson said council commenced work to establish a Graffiti Busters team in November. “Following a public call for volunteers, the Graffiti Busters Project is progressing well with a team recruited,” the spokesperson said. “Prior to Christmas, the Kempsey Graffiti Busters spent three days with the new volunteer team training and cleaning up some local graffiti sites.

the surf in January. “In recent days we have been receiving a very easterly swell which is creating very tricky conditions on all of our beaches,” Senior Lifeguard Grant Hudson said last week. Some simple beach safety advice is: • No flags, no swim - Swim between the red and yellow flags - they mark the supervised swimming area • Always talk to a lifeguard or volunteer surf lifesavers - if you have any concerns or just want to know what the surf is doing • Read and obey all temporary beach signs • Do not swim or surf alone • Supervise children at all times • Protect yourself from the sun. Cover up, use sunscreen and wear a hat, shirt and

sunglasses, find some shade and drink plenty of water. • If you get into trouble in the water, don’t panic. Remain calm. Raise your arm and call for help, float and wait for assistance “It is particularly necessary to supervise young ones this time of year with the heavy crowds we are experiencing and with the varying conditions predicted,” Mr Hudson said. “Over the past week we have noticed all beaches changing from day to day, especially the sand banks. It is vitally important for all beach users to pay close attention to where they are swimming or surfing and to always have a chat with either the lifeguards or surf lifesavers before entering the water. “The shore line currents are expected to be particularly strong over the coming days and most beaches are experiencing deep gutters close to the shore line and various rip currents on each beach. Please take care when entering the water.”

CHAMBER NEWS With Kelion Beard
Regional Manager Mid North Coast NSW Business Chamber & New England North West NSW Business Chamber
WELCOME to 2015. It is shaping up to be a big year for a host of reasons. One of the things I believe all businesses should do at the start of the year - after hopefully having some sort of break - is to take a fresh look at themselves. The new year is an ideal time to look at how you do things and why. Take a step back and with fresh eyes look at how you interact with your customers, particularly from their perspective. The Hastings area has enjoyed a very vibrant start to the year with plenty of tourists enjoying our coast and hinterland. Retailers have done well with the injection of money from the tourist and the usual sales that happen at this time of the year and the town has been buzzing with people everywhere. The dollar has dropped, which is good for exporters, but not so great for importers and consumers. Businesses and consumers will start to see the impact of this with a rise in electronic products and other imports. 2015 will also bring some other challenges for business with the upcoming state election, and the promises that will be made by the candidates in regard to business. Make sure you bring to the attention of the candidates what is of concern for you - after all they are there to represent us. We are, I believe, very fortunate to have good local politicians representing us at both state and federal levels. But with the retirement of Andrew Stoner after many years of valuable service to the community, it is now time for us to look to see who will fill his seat. One of the many things that politicians can do is assist the community when they feel they are getting ripped off. With the current fuel prices in the Hastings this is something that a lot of people believe is happening in our area. While the prices have come down slightly on the coast, they are nowhere as competitive as that of Sydney. Recently the president of the Port chamber, Hadyn Oriti, logged a complaint with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in regard to pricing of fuel in the Hastings area. This is something that chambers do - represent business interests - and he is working with our federal member, Dr David Gillespie, to try and resolve this. It will be interesting to see the outcome.
How has the tourist season been for your business?

Older people focus of new legal diary
IMPORTANT legal information of particular interest to older people is contained in a new diary published by Legal Aid NSW and available free across NSW. “The Legal Topics for Older Persons Diary covers 12 legal issues of special relevance to older citizens – one topic each month,” acting director of civil law at Legal Aid NSW Lauren Finestone said. “It covers a diverse range of subjects from wills, pension and aged-care issues to consumer and family law matters, such as what to do when adult children do not want to leave home. “Some legal issues occur mainly in the latter years of life, when people are often more unsure about where to turn for help, and this diary is an invaluable resource which gives them the guidance they need to tackle many of the issues. “Users of the diary can also learn about reverse mortgages, grandparents’ rights, how to handle disputes with neighbours, and what gifts they can give without affecting their pension. “This diary gives older people the essential legal information they need, tells them where they can find help and strengthens their understanding of their legal rights.” Produced in large print the diary, also contains literary quotes about getting older and short snippets of information, such as eligibility for a Seniors Card or how to provide for pets in a will. It also features a foreword from Professor the Hon Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO. The Legal Topics for Older Persons Diary can be obtained from Legal Aid offices, local libraries and some community organisations or ordered online at legalaid.nsw.gov.au/publications/ order-a-publication. Festival - Four in one PORT Macquarie Hastings residents will have a unique opportunity to experience the rich Goori culture of four Mid North Coast Aboriginal nations at the 2015 Saltwater Freshwater Festival. The festival has unveiled a vibrant new way to present the distinct cultures of our regions - the Biripi, Dunghutti, Gumbayngirr, and Worimi Aboriginal nations - in the Four Nations showcase. This will be the first time that Saltwater Freshwater has presented the cultural content of the festival nation by nation. Each nation will have its own festival area. Attendees will be able to make bark canoes with Dunghutti craftsmen, get hands-on in workshop with Worimi weavers and paint with artists in the Biripi art space. They will also be able to hear Gumbaynggirr stories, learn language and discover the bush foods and medicines of Gumbaynggirr country on bush-tucker walks. Each area will also feature stalls from artists and craftspeople from the featured nation. Festival coordinator Kristen Collier said six years of Saltwater Freshwater projects across the four nations had unearthed a wealth of talent and cultural knowledge unique to each nation. “We see this as an opportunity to highlight the variety of Aboriginal culture within the Mid North Coast region,” she said. “In fact, we struggled to pare the program for each nation down to one day - the number and variety of skilled Aboriginal cultural facilitators across elements as diverse as language, dance, art, music and crafts is astonishing.”
Biripi artist Joan Macdonald will share the art of painting The Aboriginal communities of the four nations are dedicated to reviving and preserving their cultural heritage and passing it on to new generations. This is a chance for visitors from within the region and beyond to connect with and learn more about the cultural richness and diversity of this region.
Share in the Saltwater Freshwater spirit on Monday, January 26 from 9am–5pm at the Coffs Harbour Botanic Gardens. Admission is free. For more information visit fb/saltwaterfreshwaterfestival and saltwaterfreshwaterfestival.com.au
Saltwater calls for volunteers
THE Saltwater Freshwater Festival is calling for volunteers to get hands-on and share the spirit of the 2015 event to be held at the Coffs Harbour Botanic Gardens on Gumbaynggirr country on January 26. With an expected festival crowd of over 10,000 people, the event team will be all hands on deck and is calling out for willing volunteers to join the festival fun. Previous festivals have attracted a dedicated workforce of over 80 volunteers, with some volunteers coming back each year to assist. Port Macquarie resident Alice Wong is one of these dedicated returning volunteers, having worked on four previous festivals. “I love volunteering for the festival because it is such a great showcase of the rich Aboriginal culture and talent in our region,” Alice said. “Every year there is something different and I always learn new things. It’s a lot of fun when people come along and enjoy such a positive experience – I’ll be
volunteering at the 2015 festival for sure.” There are a range of volunteer roles both before and on the day, from setting up stages and tents, creating decorative artworks, assisting with workshops and performance and selling merchandise all the way through to shaking a bucket at the gate for the gold coin donations that support the event. Festival volunteer coordinator Samantha Colyer said volunteering with the festival offered the chance to get really hands-on and learn new skills and also the chance to give back and share the spirit of this collaborative community event. “Festival volunteering is fun and very rewarding and looks great on your resume,” she said. Volunteer applications are now open – to apply online visit http:// saltwaterfreshwaterfestival.com.au/takepart/ or call 6658 1315.

Glasshouse turns on the art this summer Sizzling summer of stellar exhibitions IT’S a stellar summer of exhibitions at the Glasshouse Regional Gallery with international art, Australia’s most iconic houses and an incredibly unique installation, a nine-metre long salt table, on view. This summer gallery visitors can enjoy four diverse exhibitions:
Iconic Australian Houses Design aficionados and anyone interested in architecture and interior design will enjoy the Iconic Australian Houses exhibition. Curated by Karen McCartney and presented in partnership with Architecture Foundation Australia, this is a behind-the-scenes exploration of 30 of the most important Australian homes of the past 60 years. The exhibition explores the design and building of these houses, as well as the experiences of those who live in them, and illustrates the emergence of a distinctively Australian approach to home design. Vivid photography, rich illustrations, 3D models and filmed interviews look beyond the physical structures to tell the story of how good design can enrich lifestyle.
Guan Wei Guan Wei is considered by many to be the most significant artist currently working between Australia and China. His art is inspired by themes such as exploration, immigration, the plight of refugees, secret histories and cross-cultural understanding born of his experience of the contrasting realities of his former home, China and his new home, Australia.
Best Cubby House in the Street Come and rediscover your inner child. The world of the miniature comes easy to artist Shelly Evans who has created a suburban reflection series made from everyday materials. Her cardboard creations explores the playful construction of the Australian suburban home. From red brick to weatherboard, these miniatures connect to the inner childhood memory of belonging and sense of place. There is also recycled materials available for children to recreate their own ‘cubby house’.

One of the pieces in the Best Cubby House in the Street exhibition by artist Shelly Evans are known for their use of unusual materials such as salt, sugar and even uranium glass. The Last Supper, the couple’s new sculptural installation, addresses themes of food production, concerns arising from the level of salinity in Australia and related environmental impacts. “Here salt is a metaphor for the death of the land, sacrificed in the production and consumption of what has become The Last Supper,” the artists said. This installation is located on the ground floor gallery and features a nine-metre long table made of salt, complete with ‘food’, plates, glasses and more – all composed of salt. The Glasshouse Regional Gallery is open six days a week (closed Mondays) from 10am until 5pm Tuesday to Friday, 10am-4pm on weekends and public holidays. Bosch washing machine TIME is running out to win a five-star water-efficient Bosch washing machine valued at $1000. To be in the running, enter your best water-saving tip in Port MacquarieHastings Council’s Summer Water Saving promotion before 5pm on January 23. Council group manager water and Sewer Andrew Doig said the Summer Water Saving promotion was a great way to get everyone thinking about saving water. “It’s important we take responsibility for the amount of water we use as a community, given water is a resource we all share,” Mr Doig said. “By getting people to share their water saving tips - through social media as well - we’re able to exchange knowledge and information about the many different ways we can make small changes at home that collectively has a big impact for our region.” You can also post your water-saving tip on council’s Facebook page - facebook. com/pmhc2444 - to receive a free watersaving pack for your home. For more information and to view the promotion terms and conditions visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au - entries can be made online or at one of council’s branch offices.

The Rug Clipper Nifty & New STICK those rugs firmly in place to prevent those nasty slips and trips by investing in these simple but effective rug clippers to grip your mats to the floor. That gorgeous antique rug might look fabulous on your wooden floor, but you won’t be feeling so positive towards it after you’ve gone flying across the room when you misplace your foot and the mat goes travelling with you. Make that rug or mat safer by gripping it firmly to the floor with these handy rug clippers to keep your covers in place and prevent accidents. This set of four grippers will attach easily to the corners of your rug, and when pressed down to the floor will keep the material in place with its non-slip grip design. Small and discreet, you won’t be able to see them underneath the mat and they’ll leave no residue if you choose to remove them either. So if you decide your rug would look better elsewhere, you won’t be scrubbing the floor
to remove a sticky mess. Not only will these amazing grips hold your favourite rug in place, they’re also reusable and washable for repeat use time and again throughout the house. Just give them a clean with soap and water to leave them as good as new. These grippers just keep on giving, and are suitable for any floor type too. Cost: $9.95 Info: latestbuy.com.au/the-rug-clipper. html

Sachi designer insulated basket
ARE you serious about ridding Australia of the scourge of plastic shopping bags (and a little sick of the green recyclable bags)? Here’s a rather stylish way to do your bit - the Sachi designer insulated carry basket! Made from super-tough aluminium and polyester, the basket is insulated and hard wearing. Here’s how it works – instead of picking up a basket in the supermarket, you take your basket with you, drop your shopping straight in, head for the checkout. It’s designed so you can ‘shop and go’ (and look cool while you’re doing it)! Strong enough to carry up to 30kg, the insulation means it also keeps your groceries cooler for longer, which also makes it great for picnics, the beach and sporting events. It even includes a zippered pocket for your valuables and it’s collapsible – so it’s easy to carry it with you and have it when you need it. Cost: $27.95 + postage and handling Info: latestbuy.com.au

Elite swimmers drop in Camp gives youngsters taste of what’s ahead
THE Port Macquarie pool was all abuzz last week when an elite swimming club from Sydney chose to do their summer swim camp at the pool where Michael Mullins trained Olympic swimmer James Magnussen. Carlile Swimming’s head coach Justin Rothwell has made the trip north for the past four years because he finds the swimmers look forward to the great weather, relaxed lifestyle and happy town. It is also a sought-after camp because only national qualifiers are eligible. Justin said coach Mullins was very obliging in making pool time available to cope with the influx of extra swimmers. The Hastings also benefits from the swim camp with the money spent from the group of 40 swimmers, coaches, managers and chaperones. Staying four days in town at the Ki-ea Apartments for the girls and the Sandcastle Apartments for the boys which are all in walking distance to the pool - gave the swimmers, aged from 12 to 18, a taste of what it feels like to travel as a team and possibly to set some goals for nationals, world champs and even the Olympics. It wasn’t all hard grind twice a day at the pool because taking some time out was also on the agenda with movies at the Majestic Cinema and a trip on the jet boat, which was definitely a highlight. The swimmers and coaches are already talking about next year’s camp at Port Macquarie - a sign that the trip was a great success.
