Council’s $1 bid signed, sealed and delivered

And now we wait

By CAROLINE STRAINIG

PORT Macquarie-Hasting Council’s $1 bid to buy the Plaza car-park site in Port Macquarie from NSW Crown Lands was lodged as planned on Friday just before the deadline. General manager Craig Swift-McNair confirmed the expression of interest was submitted via email to real estate agent Colliers Newcastle just before 2.30pm on Friday, with a hard copy following via normal mail. The 12-page document contained all the required information plus council concept plans for a site and a document detailing the results of a community engagement process in June 2014. The move follows a heated extra-ordinary council meeting last Wednesday night at which councillors voted seven to two in favour of lodging the $1 expression of interest, despite the fact they had only had days to prepare such a proposal. At that meeting Mayor Peter Besseling described the site as “the jewel in the crown of Port Macquarie” and a gateway site that should be developed sensitively in the best interests of Port Macquarie.

He called for a government-backed corporation to be established to control not just that site but other foreshore land, ensuring development in the best interests of the Hastings that would also generate ongoing revenue. Cr Besseling stressed the parcel of foreshore land was not surplus land that could simply be sold off for revenue at the whim of the state government, but reclaimed land donated for carparking that was fulfilling a vital role as a car park. He said Woolworths’ proposal to purchase the car park and add it to their adjacent land for a larger supermarket development did not do justice to such a prime waterfront site. Council’s proposed low-key development with underground parking, cafes, restaurants and three levels of residential units – plus substantial open space engaging the foreshore – was much more suitable and would also create much more parking. The council proposal had 230 spaces as opposed to the 204 in the Woolworths development, with the latter being a nett loss of approximately 60 spaces from the existing car

Mayor Peter Besseling on the foreshore – next to the area that would become an expanded wharf area in council’s proposal. “This is too good for a supermarket complex,” he said. park. The Woolworths development also had the potential to create gridlock in the CBD because of the loss of car parking and extra traffic generated. Councillors in favour of the expression of interest were scathing of Crown Lands’ handling of the possible sale of the site to date and the ultrashort 16-day expression-of-interest process.

PMAWS all round at Petstock By CAROLINE STRAINIG

PORT Macquarie pet store Petstock was full of rescued dogs and cats on Saturday looking for homes. The occasion was the annual Petstock National Adoption Day and foster carers from local rescue group Port Macquarie Animal Welfare (PMAWS for short) brought along some of their charges for part of the day. “Normally we hold a cat adoption morning on the first Saturday of the month and a dog adoption on the fourth Saturday, but we held them both together because of the national day,” PMAWS secretary-treasurer Wendy LeCussan said. They also offered a $25-a-pet microchipping session, which proved popular. Older dogs like Cassie – pictured top right – can be adopted for just a small donation. Cats and kittens are also available from $100. Enquiries about dogs to Nigel Bird on 6584 6142 and cats to Leonie Heath on 0405 138 825. Both would also love to hear from potential foster carers. Available pets are listed on petrescue. com.au

Cr Geoff Hawkins said the state government had consistently botched and butchered the sale of the site. However, Cr Adam Roberts and Cr Sharon Griffiths cried caution, worried about taking on such a major development. Cr Roberts questioned the time frame of the expression-of-interest process cited by Cr Besseling and how development would be funded, and Cr Griffiths cited a past decision to spend millions of dollars buying commercial land next to Port Central which had proved a poor investment in the short term. General manager Craig Swift-McNair said there were multiple funding avenues, including S94 developer contributors, borrowings, reserve funds and a joint venture with private enterprise. He said putting in a preliminary expression of interest was committing council to $1 and the matter could come back to council and be researched in-depth if they were successful in their bid. Even if they did nothing for years, the site could just continue to be used as a car park, costing council nothing and fulfilling a useful role, so really council had nothing to lose. Approximately 60 interested residents attended the fiery meeting, with the vast majority vocally in favour of retaining the land in public ownership. Chamber of commerce president Hayden

Oriti spoke passionately to that end, saying the chamber would be writing to the premier the next day lobbying for that. Apart from Cr Roberts and Cr Griffiths, the only obvious opposition was a nearby resident who was tired of living overlooking the derelict Food for Less complex and thought the Woolworths development preferable. The resident also questioned whether the community engagement had been as antiWoolworths as portrayed in a council report, a statement disputed by others. Cr Besseling’s motion was eventually carried seven votes to two, with Cr Roberts and Cr Griffiths maintaining their opposition and voting against. Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams had been invited to speak at the council meeting, but declined the invitation because she thought it improper to say anything while an official expression-of-interest process was in motion. Cr Adam Roberts was pragmatic about losing the vote afterwards, but said he looked forward to seeing, in due course, the mayor’s detailed plan on exactly how council would actually fund the multi-million-dollar proposal outlined. “In the meantime, I will continue to lobby and highlight for the purpose of trying to effect positive change, genuine issues such as council’s recent poor record of major project delivery, more strategic focus, planning and

MEMBER for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams has welcomed the NSW Liberals & Nationals’ commitment to enhance the Isolated Patient Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS) if reelected. Under the NSW Liberals & Nationals, enhancements to the IPTAAS scheme will include many increases, including boosting the petrol subsidy from 19 cents to 22 cents per kilometre – a 15 per cent increase. Mrs Williams said the importance of IPTAAS to the community could not be underestimated.

Lions to rescue

THE works of international best-selling authors now have a home at Port Macquarie Base Hospital - thanks to Tacking Point Lions Club. The service club presented a mobile bookcase to Port Macquarie Pink Ladies last week, making it possible for anyone at the hospital to borrow novels, and return them, with ease. Port Macquarie Pink Ladies president Gabby Gregory said she approached the Tacking Point Lions Club about supporting the project which she hopes patients and staff will welcome. “Tacking Point Lions Club has been fantastic,” Mrs Gregory said. “People often donate books to us, but we had nowhere to store them.”

Healthy foot forward

Cr Besseling with a copy of council’s proposal in front of the car park. Note: the council proposal does not include the Food For Less site – just the Plaza car park funding to be allocated to desperately needed road and infrastructure projects and other inefficiencies within council’s operations and expenditure,” he said. Exactly when council will be notified of the fate of their expression of interest was unknown at the time of going to press.

LOCAL health district health promotion officer and Heart Foundation walking area coordinator Margo Johnston is urging everyone to consider joining the New Year Challenge to improve their health. “Walking for at least 30 minutes a day provides a range of health benefits. These include maintaining healthy weight, increasing your fitness and strength and reducing your risk of heart disease,” Ms Johnston said. During February and March if you join a local Heart Foundation Walking group and walk with the group eight times by March 31 you will qualify to receive a free Kobo E Reader (valued at $129). Local walking groups often hold coffee mornings and other social activities. Details can be found on the Heart Foundation website heartfoundation.org.au/walking or call 1300 362 787.

Summer camp success Letter of the Week WE would just like to say thank-you to the families that supported our firstever summer camp. The camp was a great success, and the parents were raving about the music and drama performances and the artwork showcase, held on the last day, which gave them a chance to see what their kids had been up to for the week. Parents commented on how their children came home and all they wanted to do was continue with their artwork, practice their drama lines, learn their choir songs and play games they had learnt during the day. The

kids all bonded with one another on the first day and have all expressed how keen they are to do camp again. We are currently in the process of organising another camp to be held April 7-10 with a showcase at the Glasshouse on the Friday. For updates, people can ‘like’ our facebook page https://www.facebook. com/campportmac or visit the website http://campportmac.wix.com/camp The attached photo shows the children rehearsing their play before the big drama performance. Waste efforts

Phone: 6582 6366.

I WAS happy to read the article ‘Bin there, done that’ in your January 29 issue about the great efforts being done by the residents of the Port Macquarie Hastings Council to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. We are working with an initiative to do the same in the commercial area of Port Macquarie - this is the Green Fork Initiative, run by Coastal Environmental Asset Management. Green Fork is focused on reducing the amounts of organic material going to landfill that is generated by food businesses and commercial kitchens. This comes to fill up a gap that leaves a great deal of restaurants, cafes and takeaway places to place their organic waste in their general waste bin. At the moment commercial organic waste is collected by J R Richards (the largest provider) only once a week and it is not mandatory for any of the premises to have it. The other provider in the area is Remondis, who collects this material daily. It will be interesting to find out when are the efforts placed for domestic services going to be applied to commercial services; at the moment business owners can choose to use the service from council or not and the service

that they provide is not delivered often enough for business to find it efficient, as it needs to be daily and not weekly. The proposal of introducing green bins in the commercial areas for the food industry could really reduce the amounts of organics going to landfill. If this is a real concern and a goal for the council, then some of this changes must happen. We also note that on weekends those who do already separate their organics are not having it collected as organics rather as general “red” waste which is in contravention to the council’s waste reduction strategy. It’s time that we got serious about waste management and not just focus on one avenue. The council needs to commit along with the waste service providers, servicing the need and substantial want of local businesses. Organic waste is also significantly cheaper to collect; for example one restaurant reduced their waste bill from $140 to $80 per week, saving them over $3000 per annum which is significant for a small business. Shave goes green

5

By CAROLINE STRAINIG GET ready for a great shave for a great cause. The Great Shave cocktail party is being staged at the Port City Bowling Club on Saturday, February 28 to raise funds for research into a cure for neuroblastoma. Jo Turnbull and friend Tamara Grieve are shaving off their hair to raise money for research into the deadly disease, which attacks children under five. Jo lost her bubbly two-year-old daughter Tess to the cancer in 2011 and pledged to do all she could to help fund research into a cure. The Great Shave is the latest in a series of fundraisers Jo is calling ‘The Great Grass Hair Challenge’, so named because when Tess had to have her head shaved she was not upset, but laughingly said “I have grass hair, just like Daddy. I love it!” Jo aims to raise $15,000 for neuroblastoma research at the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation and so far is about halfway to that goal. “I’m going to do all that I can to help find a cure so other children and families do not have to go through what we did,” she said. The cocktail party will kick off at 5pm in the bowls lounge. The fun night will include live entertainment, a silent auction and – weather permitting - barefoot bowls. In keeping with the great-shave theme, towards the end of the evening Jo and Tamara will have their hair cut off. “It’s a small price to pay to support Tess and help find a cure,” said Tamara. The cocktail party is a family-friendly event and children are therefore welcome. Tickets cost $65 per adult, which includes canapés, a twohour drink package and lawn bowls, and $12 per child, which includes nuggets and chips, a drink

Bring a bloke to Blokes Notes

Going, going, gone! Port City Bowling Club board president Robyn Biddle with Tamara and Jo at a photo shoot to promote the event and lawn bowls. Attendees are urged to wear a green tie – or buy one at the event – in honour of Tess and the green theme of the challenge. “We’d love you to come along and have a fun evening to support us,” Jo said. She added she would also like to say a big thank-you to the Port City Bowling Club, who had been fantastic, not only helping by providing a venue for fundraisers but also providing a grant for the challenge.

Tickets for the cocktail party can be purchased from the website http://www.eventbrite. com/e/the-great-shave-cocktail-event-tickets15593250833?aff=efbevent. Donations can also be made via the link to the Great Grass Hair Challenge. Anyone who would like to donate a prize for the silent auction is asked to phone Mrs Turnbull on 0401 315 591. Pre-booking is advised because tickets are selling fast.

THE Blokes Notes community all-male (except for their fearless leader) acapella group are inviting any interested blokes to come along this evening, Thursday, February 12. This not-for-profit group have been known about town for their ‘flash choir’ and in 2015 are planning a tour and ‘shed crawl’. The group meets for a two-hour workshop each week, and it has come as a surprise to many that such an amazing sound can be produced from a group who’ve often had no prior musical experience. They perform regularly for local charity events. Bring a Bloke Night is on at the Old Historic Courthouse from 6.30pm-8.30pm. No prior experience is necessary. INSIDE COUNCIL With Cr Rob Turner Portfolios: Commerce Industry and Higher Education, Events and Tourism

We need to seriously consider anything that can reduce this burden on our community

returned about one-third of the levy to the community and kept $294,360. Fast forward to the financial year just ended. In 2014 the state government levied our council a whopping $3,032,698. That’s right, a 700 per cent increase in a levy paid by local residents. And what about the rebate? Well it turns out that the $504,594 rebate was slightly higher in dollar terms, but represented only 18 per cent of the money paid. I understand there are a lot of figures to get your head around here, but the absolute bottom line is that over the last four years, the nett amount levied on residents by the NSW government has increased from $294,360 to $2,528,105. WITH the changeover to a fortnightly red bin collection for council’s domestic waste service last year, there has rightly been a fair bit of focus on the broader topic of waste. I note that several residents have picked up on the inconsistencies between the options for domestic services and commercial services, and I understand there is also a letter in today’s Independent on the topic. Council’s strategy has always been to get the domestic collection in place before expanding to cover commercial waste services, so we should see some good progress on that this year. Other comments have been made in reference to council allocating resources from its waste budget on ‘green’ or ‘climate-friendly’ initiatives. Well apart from the obvious environmental benefits, when you look at the numbers, there are serious commercial realities that make these initiatives essential. As we all know, waste from the green bins is basically composted and waste from yellow bins is recycled. That leaves red bin waste. All the red bin waste goes directly into landfill. Obviously it makes good environmental sense to reduce the amount of landfill, but what about economic and financial sense? Is there an advantage there? Well it turns out that there is. Every year the NSW government charges a levy to councils which is based on how much waste goes into landfill. This charge is paid by residents and is collected by council as part of your rates and some of the money is returned to council by way of a grant. In 2010 the state government levied our council a total of $430,062 and returned a grant of $135,702. This means that the government

Council rangers will monitor compliance and FINES can apply for breaches. OUR

BLOKE

Christopher Nesbitt

How long have you lived in or around Port Macquarie? My family have been in the area for many years. I spent school holidays with my grandparents in Lake Cathie before moving to Port Macquarie in my late teens. After overseas travel and a recent stint on the Gold Coast I’m very happy to be back for good. What do you love most about the Hastings? The quietness, slow pace and great vibe. My favourite aspect would be the beautiful beaches where you can get (relatively) uncrowded waves. Most important for me though is the feeling of home. Where do you work and what do you love most about your work? I’m a self-employed acupuncturist operating at Lighthouse Beach, and I love everything about my work. It’s a unique sense of gratification when you relieve people of pain, or help a couple wanting to conceive a baby. What do you like least about your work? Nothing. It’s a rare career where there are mainly positives! What do you do in your spare time? I really enjoy my surfing and fishing and get out as often as I can. Mostly though I hang out with my family and friends. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Hands down becoming a dad. My son is 15 months old now and I keep having to pinch myself. He keeps me on my toes, that’s for sure. How do you like your coffee? The biggest size available soy flat white with one sugar. What makes your day? Achieving great results for my patients and coming home to my little family - that’s living.

Kristy is Labor’s pick

COUNTRY Labor has announced their candidate in the March state election. Kristy Quill, 40, from Kundabung, has been selected as the candidate to contest the seat of Port Macquarie. Kristy has lived most of her life on the Mid North Coast of NSW and has spent many years working, studying and living in Port Macquarie and abroad. In recent times, she has been a carer for her mother at the family home in Kundabung. Kristy is moving back into Port Macquarie to contest the election and to represent the people of Port Macquarie in the next NSW parliament. “We need a government that will once again put people first. I will be working hard to maintain and expand the jobs in our industries that are so critical to us,” Kristy said. “The jobs in Essential Energy, in our TAFE, in health and aged care, in our tourism and hospitality industries, in our construction sector and in every part of our economy”. “My previous experience in health-related fields and as a carer has given me a great insight into the health care sector and age related health problems. “I am most passionate about keeping our healthcare system in public hands and that quality health care should be keep affordable and accessible for all people. “I know from personal experience how chronic and serious illness effects a family and that treatment needs to be delivered in a timely way. “We all remember well the problems when the Port Macquarie Base hospital was built and operated as a private/public hospital.

Kristy Quill with newsagent Chris Genders – “We need a government that will once again put people first” “With cutting of funding to hospitals and the push for privatisation of health services across the state by the Liberals and Nationals, services our community need will be affected. “Keeping our health care strong and in public hands is part of the Labor DNA and I will advocate

strongly on behalf of our community so that our services get the funding they need.” Kristy added that she had worked with both large and small businesses and appreciated the difficulties and opportunities businesses faced.

Knock, knock, who’s there? Shakespeare! my WE have all used or fallen victim to knock knock jokes. But did you know that William Shakespeare was one of the earlier users of knock knock? If you had been paying attention at school, you would have known this. In Macbeth, Shakespeare wrote: “knock, knock, who’s there?” If you don’t believe me, it’s in act 2. In recent years the tasteless puns seemed to have taken the English language by storm. Jack assured Jill he would remember her tomorrow. Then Jill said “knock knock”. Jack asked “who’s there?” Jill said: “See, you’ve forgotten me already”. Here’s another: “Knock-knock. Who’s there? Dwayne. Dwayne who? Dwayne the bathtub, I’m dwowning.” So, if knock, knock didn’t come from Shakespeare, where did it come from? My big dictionary contains five pages of the word knock, with meanings such as knock on, knock to pieces, knock heads, knock under the table, knock about, knock about with, knock back, knock down, knock off, knock it off, knock on, knock over, knock up, knock on wood and heaps more.

LAURIE BARBER

There was even knock knok, spelt differently, meaning a bundle of heckled flax. The dictionary had a mention of a knocking shop, but you don’t want to know about that. There was a mention of knockabout, similar to a rouseabout in Australia (not the American roustabout), who was willing to try his hand at any type of work. But the dictionary had little to say about knock knock. I had trouble finding it apart from a mention of “knock knock, in various senses”. One meaning of knock-knocks was “acoustic mines”. Then I found in the dictionary what I was looking for. From 1974, it went like this: “Knock knock. Who’s there? Richard Milhous. Richard Milhous who? Oh, how quickly people forget.” He was the American leader who was impeached. Didn’t you ever see All The President’s Men? I believe the origins of the term might have

been lost over the years. Let’s go back a few hundred years when the knight knocked on the front door after slaying the dragon. The person on the other side almost certainly would have said: “who’s there?” On August 19, 1936, the American entertainment magazine Variety, according to Michael Macrone, reported that the knock knock” craze was sweeping America. Then, also according to Macrone, a radio performer called Wee Georgie Wood started a craze in the UK on November 14 in the same year with tasteless jokes. About this time the “knock knock craze took off throughout the world. The idea was to tell the worst joke you could think of. The worse it was, the better the joke. Shakespeare, in Macbeth, mentioned some of the events of the time. The gatekeeper presented as a gatekeeper of hell, mentioning such people as farmers and tailors. And you thought Bill only wrote serious stuff. Now, whenever someone says “who’s there” expect to see a tasteless pun. Such as: “Toby, who? Toby or not Toby, that is the question. lauriebarber.com; lbarber@midcpast.com.au

Key ministers visit IT was good to see both the federal and state ministers for small business in the region in January. The Hon Bruce Billson MP, Minister for Small Business, was in Port Macquarie as a guest of our federal member Dr David Gillespie MP, and both members of parliament attended a local meeting hosted by the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce. The meeting drew a large crowd of mainly business owners, to listen to what the minister had to say, on a range of issues including fuel prices. Minister Billson confirmed that the ACCC is monitoring Port Macquarie fuel prices as part of their ongoing investigations. The minister also announced that following his direction to the department the ACCC would now be releasing at least eight reports in 2015, these will consist of: • Quarterly “macro” reports looking at petrol price movements and what drives them overall • At least four market studies looking at “micro” issues in considerable depth, including analysing the price drivers of petrol in three regional markets Minister Billson did not want to say if Port Macquarie would be included in the four market studies, as this may tip off the suppliers of fuel, thereby lessening the effect of the investigation. The minister spent considerable time answering a number of questions from the floor and providing concrete answers to the questions, not political speak. At the end of the meeting he asked a very

interesting question that gained some interesting answers. If you were the Prime Minister of Australia, what is one thing you would change? The answers varied quite a bit but it was a good opportunity to give direct feedback to a cabinet minister. Also in January The Hon. John Barilaro, MP, Minister for Small Business and Regional Tourism, was also in Port Macquarie at the invitation of our state member, Leslie Williams MP. The gathering to meet with the minster was much smaller, just a few of the board members of the Port Chamber, but it was certainly interesting to hear his views on small business and tourism. While in Port Macquarie, Minister Barilaro announced that the North Coast Destination Network will receive $52,500 from the Regional Visitor Economy Fund to increase visitation to the Legendary Pacific Coast. The opportunity to get in front of ministers like this, and have our concerns heard is great news for the Port Macquarie business community.

HELLO to all the business women in the Hastings region and welcome to the Hastings Business Women’s Network monthly column. The HBWN is an organisation of more than 200 local women who come together to exchange ideas, information and inspiration as they strive for business success. We are currently celebrating 15 years of encouraging, empowering and educating business women in Port Macquarie and surrounding regions. In this first column I would like to highlight our International Women’s Day cocktail party to be held on the evening of Friday, March 6. This is one of the most significant events we host each year. All around the world, International Women’s Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality. The event provides an opportunity to celebrate, encourage and recognise each other, especially the unsung heroines in our region via The Hastings Heroines Awards. The event is also a fundraiser with all proceeds going to the Port Macquarie Hastings Domestic & Family Violence Specialist Service. Make It Happen is the 2015 international theme, encouraging effective action for advancing and recognising women. This theme has been chosen to encourage: • Greater awareness of women’s equality • More women in senior leadership roles • Equal recognition of women in the arts • Growth of women owned businesses • Increased financial independence for women, and

Network president Karen Archer • More women in science, engineering and technology Women have come a long way toward achieving these goals and closing the gender gap in Australia, but still lag behind men in many arenas. We are working towards closing the gap further. I’m sure you know a Hastings Heroine, a woman who deserves recognition for encouraging effective action in advancing and recognising women. You can nominate your Hastings Heroine by emailing Hastings. Heroine@gmail.com. Nominations close on February 19. All ages and all genders are welcome to this event, so come along to find out how you can be part of the effort towards equality for women in our local region. I look forward to seeing you there. FINAL THOUGHT: American feminist, journalist, and social activist Gloria Steinem said “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights”. I look forward to sharing monthly HBWN updates, ideas and happenings with you. For more information about HBWN visit hbwn.com.au

Wesport dux recognised

THE new Hastings Secondary College started the year with formal assemblies at both high school campuses to welcome students back, especially the new Year 7 groups, and to outline strategies for the school year. Hundreds of students dressed neatly in their school uniforms and seated with their pastoral-care teachers listened to motivational speeches from their principals. Principal Lorraine Haddon and executive principal Dr Wayne Ible spoke about the need for students to set achievable goals for the school year at the Port Macquarie campus. With the captains and vice captains running the assembly, the outstanding students in the junior school were singled out for recognition during an imaginative screen presentation organised by the Creative and Performing Arts faculty. The Westport campus held a formal assembly to announce the dux of the school for 2014. The principal, Ian Gowan, also welcomed students back for the school year and recommended that students have high attendance, be organised each day and to think about getting out of their comfort zones. That it takes effort on their part to revise, study and be the best they can be. The high achievers from last year’s HSC class attended to not only be honoured for their achievements but also to spend time before the assembly sharing ideas with the current Year 12 class who listened keenly to the advice on how to study smartly for their coming HSC. Mark Barber was announced Dux for 2014 by principal Gowan, who presented him with his award. According to one of his teachers, Melissa

Westport principal Ian Gowan congratulates Mark Barber Fitzgerald, a head teacher who taught Music and Drama last year, Mark is a “quiet achiever.” “There were two or three others who were close to Mark also,” Ms. Fitzgerald said. “Mark worked hard and consistently in every lesson. We are very proud of him.” Mark scored the top bands in all his subjects doing best in Ancient History. He plans on studying for a combined degree in Economics

and Arts at ANU starting on February 16. Mark also studied Maths, English, Business Studies, Music and Economics. Mark is an accomplished musician playing two instruments, the oboe and the Cor Anglais (an alto member of the oboe family). This is his sixth year of playing. He has played with the Port Macquarie Young Guns, the Port Macquarie Senior Concert Band, the Symphony Orchestra

of the Great Lakes and Hastings districts held in Taree. He has been to Los Angeles with the Young Guns and recorded music with them at Disneyland. “I’m not entirely sure what I would like to do for a career,” he said. “Something to do with politics without becoming a politician maybe.” The dux for the Port Macquarie Campus will feature in the Independent next week.

Students at Hastings Secondary College benefit from an extended range of educational, cultural and sporting opportunities that enhance their educational choice and aspirations. They are encouraged to enrich their learning by selecting from the broad elective subjects curriculum and by participating in the many extra-curricular activities. The exceptional programs in music, the creative and performing arts and sport allow students to develop their self-confidence, independence and self-esteem. Extending and enriching academic opportunities challenge and motivate students to higher levels of learning. Photo (l-r): Lee Humes and Emma Sinclair - Captains of Westport Campus. Mason Rack to rock North Haven

RARELY do you get a chance to see a top band for free – but that’s just what you can do in North Haven tomorrow night. The Mason Rack Band are playing a free show at the North Haven Bowling and Recreation Club from 8pm tomorrow night, Friday, February 13. The band boast over 2000 live performances and have played in countries from Germany and the Netherlands to Japan and Vanuatu. The ‘rags to riches’ Mason Rack is a born entertainer - growing up playing percussion at the age of six with his musician father Billy Rack. Progressing to drums at age eight, Mason was able to play any style of music. For the next four years Mason developed a natural rhythm that is now part of his soul and way of life. They are renowned for their amazing live stage performances and have played alongside artists such as Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson, Buddy Guy and Keith Urban. Here’s a quote from a radio commentator

who saw them overseas. “I saw these guys last night and they were friggin’ amazing! One of the most amazing live experiences I have ever had. These guys drag the blues kicking and screaming into the 21 century. They have to be seen to be believed.” Here’s another review from someone who saw them at a blues festival in 2013: “The performance was nothing short of spectacular. The crowd on this perfect Easter Sunday morning were completely ready for something amazing, and then it happened - Mason Rack band in full swing. The crowd in the tent some 3000 strong, very quickly turned into an overflowing 800010,000. The band covered many of the signature moves that make Mason Rack Band one of the best to see. “Mason Rack goes down as one of my highlights of the festival. Right up there with Jonny Lang, John Fogerty, and John Butler Trio.”

Stomping together HUNDREDS of people wined, dined and stomped their way through the day at Bago Vineyards on Sunday. The occasion was the vineyard’s 17th annual grape-stomping championships and sunshine combined with plenty of Bago wine and good music from the Reds jazz quintet ensured everyone had a great day out. Independent owner Sandy Mackenzie and her husband Craig competed in the media grape stomp for the first time and – while they didn’t win – they did manage to produce six litres of grape juice and stay upright. “It’s very slippery and much harder than you think,” Craig said afterwards.

Searchers to play Panthers LEGENDARY UK band The Searchers will be playing here on Sunday, February 15. The Searchers emerged as part of the 1960s along with The Beatles, The Hollies and Gerry and The Pacemakers. Their distinctive jangling sound of the 12-string guitar and the rich harmonies embellished with their immaculate vocals have without doubt assured them a lasting place in the history of popular music. From their early beginnings in the late fifties through the heady days of the sixties as teenage idols they have comfortably settled into a position well deserved by a band whose sound has influenced some of the most important artistes of our generation. Hit songs include Sweets For My Sweet, Sugar And Spice, When You Walk In The Room, Love Potion Number 9 and Someday We’re Gonna Love Again. Of course, the personnel have altered over the years but John McNally, the founding member, and Frank Allen, bass man since the middle of 1964, have faithfully preserved and enhanced their treasured reputation and image to the present day. The visit to Port Macquarie is part of a special anniversary tour, showcasing their greatest hits live on stage. Hailing from the same era and

country as the Beatles, their performance will also complement the Beatles Festival, which is also on here this weekend. In a phone interview with the Independent from the UK, Frank Allen said they had no trouble keeping things “fresh and new” even after all these years. “We have been around for 50 years, so there is a huge amount of music to choose from,” he said. “On this tour you will hear many of our big hits, but also some B-side tracks and lesser played tracks and tributes to artists we have toured to. “It’s also not just a bunch of songs, we talk about the whole history of the band and how the songs came about.” Frank finds that their appeal is universal. “It gets wider all the time, from babies and teenagers to people in their 60s, 70s and 80s,” he said. The Searchers will be playing at Panthers on Sunday, February 15. Tickets cost $35 for members and $39 for non-members. Doors open at 7.30pm and show starts at 8pm. To book visit portmacquarie.panthers.com. au or call in at the club, 1 Bay Street, Port Macquarie, ph 6580 2300.

GIG GUIDE

Ready to race: Marine Rescue’s Richard Gander, Bob Green, Trish Hallett, Greg Davies, Peter Huettner, Tony Hallett, Donna Cleary and Ben Leonard and Tommy the dog get in shape for marshalling duties at the Mini Sand Mudder on Saturday

Time for a challenge THE Beatles Festival has arrived! Activities kick off tonight at the Wauchope RSL and will run through Sunday, with something to suit everyone. The fun includes a dance party with The Beatnix at Port Panthers on Friday and a major day of events in Westport Park on Sunday. One of the more challenging events is the Mini Sand Mudder walk or run – it’s up to the individual - from Town Beach to Flynns Beach on Saturday, February 14 from 2.30-5pm. Participants will have to tackle 16 obstacles along the Doctors Walk between Town and Flynns beaches, guaranteed to test their fitness, agility and patience. Entrants must be over 18 unless competing as part of a family group. The cost is $40 per adult, $30 student/

concession and $120 for teams of four, which includes a free T-shirt/cap and free barbecue meal. There are also lots of prizes for lots of crazy reasons, plus free live entertainment from 5pm on Town Beach. All monies raised will go to Marine Rescue and Headspace, so in addition to having a great afternoon’s fun you will be helping two great causes at the same time. To compete you must register and pay by 5pm today at Challenge Fitness in Port Home Zone, 160 Hastings River Drive, Port Macquarie, email challengefitnessnsw@bigpond.com or ph 6584 1122.
