Plucked from disaster
“
It was just one of those things that was beyond our control
“
By CAROLINE STRAINIG A PORT Macquarie father and his son are thanking their lucky stars this morning that they are still alive after being plucked from their stricken yacht in blizzard conditions off the east coast of the US. Reg McGlashan, 65, and his son Jason, 38, had just started sailing Jason’s newly purchased 13-metre yacht Sedona back from Newport to Australia when things went drastically wrong a day out. “About 200nm south of Newport things started to happen,” Reg said, in understated fashion on his Facebook page. “Electrical problems with the motor generator, then the wind generator only gave out six volts, which stopped the autopilot from working, then the motor gave out. We put over a mayday on the VHF radio, but there was no response. “We looked at each other and said ‘EPIRB’. “We then tried calling the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and they got onto the USA, who called on the sat phone. They got a chopper in the air with an ETA of 2.5 hours, which arrived at 7.30am, and we were both winched aboard back to their base at Cape Cod.” Seas were reportedly eight-metres high when

the US Coast Guard reached the vessel and instructed the pair to jump off the yacht into the ocean so they could be winched up without risk of becoming entangled in the yacht’s mast and rigging. A dramatic video on the Coast Guard’s website shows the rescue and the pair shaking hands in relief when they were reunited in the helicopter. In an interview on Sunrise on Tuesday morning Reg cheerfully remarked how cold the Atlantic Ocean was compared to the waters of Port Macquarie and “everything shrivelled up”. He also stressed how they had had the yacht thoroughly checked out before embarking on their journey. “It was just one of those things that was beyond our control,” he said. When the pair will be returning to Australia was unknown at the time of going to press, but in his Facebook post Reg said he couldn’t wait to be back in OZ and to “have a few VBs and wake up next to my wife”. The Coast Guard says the yacht was 150nm south of the island of Nantucket, which is just off the east coast of the state of Massachusetts.

Young models warned “
This guy has allegedly been consistently harassing models as far back as 2009 and once he starts communicating with a model gets increasingly rude
“
By CAROLINE STRAINIG YOUNG women have been warned to be careful of any ‘photographers’ who approach them offering to shoot a portfolio. Kempsey Photography owner Brett Von Holdt posted the warning on a closed Mid North Coast photography Facebook page, asking reputable photographers to spread the word. “Just a quick note to let everyone know that there is a ‘photographer’ in Port Macquarie who is very well known for harassing young female models and pressuring them to shoot in styles they are not comfortable with,” Mr Von Holdt wrote. “This guy has allegedly been consistently harassing models as far back as 2009 and once he starts communicating with a model gets increasingly rude, pressuring and finally abusive. He promises big rewards and big campaigns but can’t deliver.”
Some simple precautions can ensure your photo shoot is a great experience PICTURE: FILE SHOT Mr Von Holdt said the man in question used the same first name all the time but different surnames. Contacted by the Independent, Mr Von Holdt repeated the warning and said it was important
for anyone to check out a photographer’s bona fides before using them, including testimonials from past clients. “It’s also basic stranger-danger – take someone with you if you don’t know the person,” he said.
Beatles hit the right note THE Beatles have come and gone, but don’t worry, they’ll be back again next year – or at least their music will - to do it all again. Yes, Port Macquarie’s annual Beatles Festival was held late last week and over the weekend and yet again hit the right note with locals and visitors. Janette Hyde from Greater Port Macquarie Tourism Association said each event drew its own individual audience and some people went to all of the events. She said the concerts featuring The Beatnix were a highlight, but there were many other stand-out events, like the Valentine’s Day breakfast at Roses Vineyards and bands on the Glasshouse forecourt. “The new Mini Sand Mudder beach challenge with 399 entries was also a new event that was totally embraced by the community and very well organised by Tacking Point Lions Club,” Mrs Hyde said. “The sunset concert on Town Beach with Baby Boomers playing with the surf as their background on Saturday evening was also fantastic, while the car show at Westport Park on Sunday featured a huge range of classic cars beautifully restored and maintained.” Mrs Hyde said the organising committee would be having a wrap meeting at the end of March and was already looking forward to planning next year’s festival. “We sincerely thank all of the sponsors and the community for embracing this event, which will hopefully be around for many years to come,” she said.

SWIMMERS and dog owners who like swimming their pets have been warned that warm conditions and intermittent rain are resulting in blooms and scums of algae. Water testing conducted last week at Camden Haven River, Googly’s Lagoon and Hastings River near Settlement Point has confirmed some of the algae is a marine blue-green algae called Trichodesmium, commonly known as sea sawdust. This form of algae has the potential to cause skin irritations, nausea and ear infections. It is important to avoid sitting or swimming in water containing algae or touching or swallowing large amounts of algal scum. Seek medical advice if you or your pet experience any symptoms. Please report any unusual-coloured water or algae in public places you see to council on 6581 8111.

Support Red Cross Calling AS Australia prepares to commemorate the landing of the first ANZAC troops in Gallipoli 100 years ago, we ask that you also remember the work of Red Cross by supporting Red Cross Calling during March. Just like the thousands of Red Cross volunteers who worked so hard to support our ANZAC troops in 1915, Red Cross volunteers still continue to care for those who need it most. By making a donation or organising an event for Red Cross Calling during
March, you can support the everyday work of Red Cross such as working in NSW bushfire relief and recovery centres, making daily phone calls to elderly Australians living alone, providing breakfast for children who might otherwise go to school hungry and supporting young parents. To make a donation, or to find out how you can get involved with Red Cross Calling go to our website at redcrosscalling.org.au or phone 1800 008 831. Douglas Vale grapes harvested HARVESTING of the Chambourcin and Villard Blanc grapes took place at Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard last Wednesday. A large team of volunteers worked from early morning to afternoon, ensuring the continued supply of excellent wine. This coming week will see the Isabella grapes picked and these produce the famous Portabella fortified wine. The volunteers would also like to thank the community for the tremendous attendance and support at our recent Tours, Tastings, Treasures and Tea day. Not only did it introduce Douglas Vale to locals but also many visitors. As always, all profits go directly back into the restoration and maintenance of this unique property. Volunteers are now planning ahead for the Heritage Day on Saturday, April 18, which promises to be fun for all the family. Dee Watkinson Douglas Vale Historic Homestead publicity officer

Lifeline telephone crisis supporter Aleisa Byfield continues to answer calls at Lifeline Mid Coast
MORE people called Lifeline in 2014 than any other year since the charity’s establishment in 1963. CEO Jane Hayden said that last year Lifeline received over 930,000 calls to the 13 11 14 crisis line, an increase of over 25 per cent in just two years. “In one way, it’s encouraging that more help seekers know that we’re just a phone call away if people are feeling alone, hopeless or just struggling to cope,” she said. “On the other hand, it also reflects the persistently high numbers of people having thoughts about suicide. “Lifeline undertakes almost 600 suicide safety checks every single day. “Compared with the average of seven deaths by suicide each day, it is clear that Lifeline continues to provide an absolutely crucial suicide-prevention role.”

Ms Hayden said Lifeline expects almost one million calls to 13 11 14 this year, but without extra financial support, many calls will go unanswered. “Our telephone crisis supporters answered just over 795,000 calls from Australian help seekers in 2014 with 70,600 calls from help seekers answered in December alone,” she said. “We are answering more calls but we are also receiving more calls, so we rely on generous community support, corporate donations and government funding to keep up with demand. “Lifeline is a volunteer-based charity and every dollar donated helps prevent a suicide.” If you, or someone you know, is in crisis, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or visit lifeline. org.au/gethelp To donate to Lifeline, please visit lifeline.org. au/donate or phone 1800 800 768.

President Bob Kennett – delighted with a ‘powerful’ boost from the state government
Show’s future looking brighter
WAUCHOPE showgrounds is a big winner in the latest round of the Public Reserves Management Fund. Member for Oxley Andrew Stoner said the NSW government had committed more than $700,040 to support the development, maintenance and improvement of public reserves across the Oxley electorate. The major grant in the Hastings area was $231,342 to the Wauchope Show Society for the placement of power lines and establishment of bore water for the arena and animals at the showground. The show society also received an $11,641 grant for improvements to facilities by TAFE
apprentices from another fund. Wauchope Show Society president Bob Kennett said the major grant would enable them to put two-thirds of the showground’s power underground, and they would be applying for another grant to finish the job later this year. The grant also includes putting down a 32-metre bore, which will supply water to the horse stables, arena and toilets and cut the society’s water bill. The 105th Wauchope Show will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11. For more information visit wauchopeshowsociety.com.au
DO you have an event that will put Greater Port Macquarie on the map? The call is now open for local event organisers to apply for sponsorship assistance through Council’s Event Development Sponsorship Program. The newly launched program aims to support event organisers as they develop, stage and sustain locally grown major events. Up to $5000 in sponsorship per event is available to help grow local events. Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor Peter Besseling said council was committed to supporting local event organisers to grow their events to a selfsustainable major events status. “Our region has a fantastic reputation when it comes to hosting major events. Council recognises that we have a proactive community who are keen to add to our major events calendar but might need a little help in getting their events off to a running start,” Cr Besseling said. “Council’s new Event Development Sponsorship Program provides the perfect opportunity for local event organisers to do this.” Events such as the Parkes Elvis Festival and Tamworth Country Music Festival all started from humble beginnings and are now synonymous with their host destination. “We would love to see a locally owned event achieve a similar standing in the future for our region,” Clr Besseling said. Event organisers can download the program guidelines from council’s website - pmhc.nsw.gov. au - to check their eligibility for sponsorship, with funding now available for 2014-2015.

On 20 and 27 June 2012 the Environment Protection Authority (EPA conducted unannounced inspections at the Volcanic Resources Quarry. On June 20 and 27 2012 an unspecified amount of sediment laden water discharged from the quarry pit on the Volcanic Resources premises through a hole in a dam wall. Upon discharging through the dam wall, the sediment laden water entered an unnamed creek, flowed from the premises onto the neighbouring property and then entered Herons Creek. On 27 June 2012, sediment laden water was again observed by the EPA to be discharging through the same point and similarly entered Herons Creek. On each occasion the EPA took a number of water samples for analysis. The Company was prosecuted by the EPA in relation to both of the above incidents. The Company pleaded guilty to the charges. The Company was fined a total of $22,000, and was also ordered to pay the EPS’s legal costs in the amount of $24,500. This notice was paid for by the Company as a result of an order of the Land and Environment Court of NSW.

Medically assisted dying to be debated at forum
The right to choose Dr Frank Brennan will be one of the experts on the panel
Push for change ORGANISATIONS such as Dying with Dignity NSW are trying to lift understanding of all aspects of dignity in death and to legally allow, in controlled circumstances, a choice for any mentally competent person who wishes to be given medically assisted dying at the time of that person’s choosing. DWD says there is a huge desire throughout Australia for people suffering from terminal diseases to be legally permitted to die with help from doctors. However, politicians are not listening to their electors.
PORT Macquarie residents will have the unique opportunity to hear the case both for and against medically assisted dying on March 14 at Port Panthers’ auditorium. Some of Australia’s leading medical and palliative care experts, together with federal, state and local politicians and candidates will gather in a forum organised by the Port Macquarie branch of Dying With Dignity where you can ask that niggling question you want to hear both sides of the argument about. Two of those experts are Dr Rodney Syme from Melbourne and Dr Frank Brennan from Sydney. Dr Rodney Syme is a retired specialist urologist, author of ‘A Good Death’ and vicepresident of Dying with Dignity Victoria. He has openly admitted to enabling terminally ill patients to die at a time and place of their choosing by giving them the means and knowledge to end their suffering. He has called on the Australian Medical Association to survey doctor members on the issue of medically assisted dying. Dr Frank Brennan is a palliative-care physician based in Sydney. He visits Port Macquarie every two months to see patients and work with the local palliative care nurses. He believes palliative care is a relatively new discipline; essentially its definition is the care of people with life-limiting illnesses. He strongly believes this kind of palliative care will ensure

History is key to $1 sale “
With Cr Lisa Intemann Portfolios: Roads and Infrastructure, Future Planning.
PEOPLE have asked me why council felt justified offering just $1 to purchase the Plaza Car park land - a site valued at least several million dollars. Council’s decision can only be understood in light of the history of the site. In the 1960s a local developer dredged sand from the river and used it to build up a large area of land in the vicinity of what is now Kooloonbung Creek. The developer gave part of the reclaimed area free of charge to the state government for car parking, with the land subsequently gazetted as a reserve for car parking. The land is now known as the Plaza car park, providing 260 odd public parking spaces. Apparently initiated by Woolworths, the government entered into private negotiations for a sale, and by ministerial authority decided to sell the car park without conducting the normally required ‘public interest test’. At the information session last year, the community was assured there would be no nett loss of car parking arising from the Woolworths purchase and development. This is unfortunately not how things are turning out. The proposed Woolworths development
SUNDAY 1 MARCH
This is a short-sighted land grab by the state government, with all the costs and none of the benefits going to the local community
creates a new demand for nearly 350 parking spaces, with only about 210 being proposed to be provided in the new building. In effect that means the local community will be down by 400+ parking spaces – 140 from the new development, and 260+ spaces lost from the existing reserve. Not even counting traffic impacts, this parking deficit will have an enormous negative impact on congestion and amenity in the Port CBD. Council is offering $1 so as to retain the land in public ownership for parking. If the Woolworths proposal goes ahead, the cost to council for replacing the lost parking spaces will be to the order of $8 million, which is both unaffordable and puts council’s CBD parking management plan into chaos. It is also reputably more than the land could be sold for. This is a short-sighted land grab by the state government, with all the costs and none of the benefits going to the local community, absolutely contradicting the notion of partnership between levels of government. It is another example of privatisation against the public interest, penalising communities to the benefit of lazy governments and large corporations. What do you think should happen? Brought to you by All Round Financial Services How long have you lived in or around Port Macquarie? Not long, only three wonderful years, although I’m so comfortable here that I feel as if I’ve lived here for longer. What do you love most about the Hastings? The natural environment, clean seas, beautiful beaches and the presence of wildlife. Wherever I go I see koalas, monitors, kangaroos and beautiful bird life. I also love the easiness of living here. Nothing is too far away and we have just about everything we need right here in the region. And I’ve met some fantastic people. Where do you work and what do you love most about your work? I have my own natural medicine clinic on Horton Street. My absolute passion is for herbs and a healthy diet - providing the body with the right environment to achieve a healthy balance. I really appreciate the holistic approach of naturopathy because it allows for everything – diet, lifestyle and personal attitude. My motto – “You can’t medicate your way out of something you ate yourself into.” What do you like least about your work? I’m very busy and keeping up with the latest research can be tricky - every week there’s a new diet or health fad to familiarise myself with. I love new ideas but keeping up in this fast-paced world can be interesting at times. How do you start a your day? Exercise and a protein smoothie – oh and a coffee! Sometimes an early meeting means no exercise, but I manage to squeeze everything in most days. What do you do in your spare time? Anywhere outdoors does it for me, especially swimming in the sea. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Well I just completed a 3500-word assignment for my MBA with CSU, so I’m very pleased with myself for getting it done and handed in. No marks yet, so I shouldn’t speak too soon! Seriously though - my son who is recently engaged to a lovely woman. I’m so proud of the man he has become. How do you like your coffee? Ginger tea or green jasmine tea is my preferred hot drink but a small strong latte goes down nicely too.

HAVE you ever dreamt of building your own city? Here is your chance! Port Macquarie Library will host the LEGOTM Brick By Brick: Build Your Own National Capital exhibition from Saturday, February 21 for six weeks, giving children and budding designers the opportunity to build their own national capital using LEGO bricks. Visitors of all ages and abilities are encouraged to take part and create their own national capital buildings, bridges and attractions or use the available construction sheets to replicate some of Australia’s national institutions and buildings. The National Capital Authority developed the display as an engaging way to tell Australians about their national capital. With over 30,000 LEGO bricks to play with, the possibilities are endless. Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor Peter Besseling expects the activity will be very popular with LEGO fans of all ages. “This will be a great activity for the whole family, and we invite parents, children and people of all ages to come along and have a go at the build sheets provided,” he said. “Kids will be encouraged to take the build sheets away and try the designs at home with their own LEGO.” The activity will run Monday to Friday, 10am-4.30pm, at Port Macquarie Library until April 8. DON’T try explaining to your wife why you were home late last night. She might offer you one word – “mansplain”. I have never used that word during the past 12 months - in fact ever. I don’t know of anybody who has. But this word was chosen by Macquarie Dictionary as its word of the year. The committee that selected the word offered by way of explanation “they felt that it was a muchneeded word and it was a clever coinage which captured neatly the concept of the patronising explanation offered only too frequently by some men to women”. (I don’t know how use of the word “that” by this dictionary committee added to the sentence.) The word assumes the woman is ignorant of the subject matter and needs having things explained. Some people regard it as patronising. The word seems to suggest the man knows more than the woman but, as we all know, most women feel they know more than the men. I’m sure you have come across such a man one who knows more than anybody else about any subject you care to mention and is not

Clean dream for the Greens IMAGINE a Mid North Coast in which power bills are no longer painful, dangerous greenhouse gas emissions are eliminated and tens of thousands of new jobs are created. That’s the vision of Greens candidate for Oxley candidate Carol Vernon, who says it is not a pipe dream, but the Greens’ fully-costed plan for a clean-energy future. “Rapid developments in technology and falling costs for renewable energy technologies like wind generators and solar power have made this scenario very achievable,” she said. “The Greens’ plan is to rapidly transition households and businesses to a clean energy economy to enable the closure of the state’s fossil fuel power stations and to end the reliance on gas. “Increasing numbers of independent studies are showing that the lights will not go off and industry will not shut down without fossil-fuel power. Tens of thousands of new jobs can be generated in activities like research, development, manufacture, construction, operations and maintenance. “A key part of the plan is to ensure that every household has the financial and technical help it needs to be part of the energy revolution. This includes lowinterest loans to install new appliances and technology to manage energy usage so that bills are stabilised and reduced, and emissions from energy use are eliminated.”

backward in explaining it all to you. Of course, you nod your head in all the right places, while thinking “this bloke hasn’t a clue”. The word mansplain was selected by the New York Times as its word of the year in 2010 and added to the online Oxford in 2012. Some commentators have complained that the word has been overused, but I don’t know where. I have never heard the word used anywhere, but then I have led a sheltered life. “Yes dear” is the way to stay out of trouble. From what I can gather, the word came into vogue about 2008. In April of that year Rebecca Solnit published a blog with the heading “Men explain things to me; facts didn’t get in their way”. She didn’t use the word mansplain, but explained the circumstances that led to her supposed criticism. The word appeared a month
later on a social network called Live Journal. It was just the word needed to describe various American politicians. I won’t suggest it should be used against some Australian politicians. You can make up your own mind about that. Some say the word mansplain is sexist. There should be a word womansplain. There is! I don’t think its meaning is similar to mansplain . From what I can gather, womansplain means a woman is trying to explain why a man thinks as he does. You won’t hear much about womansplain, because some women have been known to complain about its use. A few other words including “plain” have been suggested, but I don’t have room for them here. But my advice to men is: Don’t tell women you know more than they do, or they might tell you a few things in reply. By my calculations, this column is number 1000 but, as I said at the start of the year, I could be out by one or two. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Back and better than ever Home owners flock to Designer Living grand reopening DESIGNER Living Kitchens’ grand reopening has exceeded all expectations. Dozens of suppliers and business associates keen to wish them well attended a cocktail party last Friday, and hundreds of Hastings residents eager to get a great price on a brand-new kitchen flocked to their opening-day celebrations last Saturday. From 8am to 4pm on Saturday there were balloons, promotional bags and a sausage sizzle and festivities. Other highlights included the opening of a new clearance centre and a fire brigade demonstration of how to put out a fire on your stove top.
Part-owner Todd Barnes said the day was a huge success and staff were kept extremely busy handling enquires. “People just loved the new showroom and the range of product lines we have,” he said. “It’s a great testament to our staff and a big well done to the team.” Mr Barnes said anyone who missed out on the day could still take advantage of some special offers. “You can get up to 20 per cent off certain kitchens for the next couple of weeks so hurry while stocks last, terms and conditions apply” he said. The celebrations mark Designer Living

The grand reopening happened almost one year from when the kitchen manufacturer’s premises in Acacia Avenue in Port Macquarie burnt down on March 1, 2014. Pop along and say g’day and see what a great kitchen or bathroom deal Todd and the team can do for you.

Hastings Macleay Freemasons Association’s Alan Williams, Masonicare representative Robert Drysdale, nurse unit manager Jenny Baroutis and the Hastings Macleay Clinical Network coordinator Dr Robert Pegram, with the $10,000 donation which will assist the families of children with cancer. Freemasons help sick children FREEMASONS from throughout the Hastings and Macleay have raised $10,000 to support local children with cancer. The Hastings Macleay Freemasons Association handed $5000 to Port Macquarie Base Hospital’s Paediatric Oncology Trust last Thursday. The money was matched dollar for dollar by the Freemasons’ official charity in NSW/ACT, Masonicare. The donation brings the Freemasons’ support for the children’s Trust to $30,000 in five years. The Mid North Coast Cancer Institute’s nurse unit manager at Port Macquarie, Jenny Baroutis, said the Masons’ gift would provide muchneeded support to local families whose children were undergoing cancer treatment. “When a child undergoes specialised cancer treatment, there can be significant financial pressures for parents,” Ms Baroutis said.
“The Freemasons have given these families one less thing to worry about.” Association grand inspector of workings Alan Williams said the local Masonic Lodges of Lachlan Macquarie, Trial Bay Daylight, Kempsey Macleay, Loftus Kempsey, Lodge Star of Wauchope, Hastings and Port Macquarie Daylight had worked hard to ensure the fundraiser’s success. “With the support of Tony Green from The Good Guys in Port Macquarie, we were able to offer some great prizes for our raffle. Our Masons and the public did the rest,” Mr Williams said. “People supported us because there was a realisation that this fundraiser was for an important cause. “They might not be involved in the hospital system; they might not be a patient, but most people know someone whose life has been
The
touched by cancer.” The Paediatric Oncology Trust supports children with a cancer diagnosis and their families. It assists families with the costs involved in travelling to specialist cancer centres, for accommodation, for specific equipment required for recovery and for the incidentals incurred in not being at home. Ms Baroutis said the Freemasons’ gift was gratefully received. “We really do appreciate everyone’s support - from the Masons who gave their precious time to sell tickets to the public who supported the raffle,” Ms Baroutis said. “Please be assured, you might never meet the children you have helped but their families will find comfort in the support you have provided, and that makes a world of difference during what can be a very difficult time.”

THE swarms of blue-green jellyfish that have invaded some Hastings beaches in recent weeks will become commonplace unless action is taken to tackle climate change. That’s according to Climate Change Australia (Hastings) president Harry Creamer, who said there was a clear link between burning fossil fuels, emitting more carbon pollution and releasing more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and the acidification of the world’s oceans and the rise of jellyfish. “We must commit to serious efforts to tackle climate change, here in Australia, and by working with other nations. This is the critical decade for action – there is no time to lose,” Mr Creamer said. Mr Creamer at Lighthouse Beach with one of the jellyfish PICTURE: MATT BELL

Happy smiles – regular visits to your dentist will help them stay that way
Healthy mouth, healthy body A HEALTHY mouth is a critical part of good overall health. Sadly however, most people tend to avoid the dentist until they are forced to go due to pain or other symptoms. Fortunately there are some very simple steps that can be taken to ensure a healthy mouth in the long term. That’s according to Lake Road Dental, who stress the importance of making regular visits to your dentist. “At least one dental visit a year allows your dentist to properly check the condition of your teeth and mouth, provide a full mouth clean and diagnose any cavities or conditions present in the mouth,” a spokesperson said. “It also means that any issues are diagnosed earlier, which likely means less invasive and cheaper treatment. It is all too often dentists
see teeth that have been left unattended for too long and hence require extensive and expensive treatment. A regular clean also prevents gingivitis and gum disease. “As teeth age their natural defences against decay-causing bacteria decreases. Hence it is essential to implement a thorough oral-hygiene routine at home. For most people this is as simple as brushing twice daily for two minutes at a time and flossing between all teeth at least once a day. Anything more is based on advice by your dentist.” Visit Lake Road Dental at 47 Lake Road. Port Macquarie, ph 6583 1233 or 65 High Street, Wauchope, ph 6586 0007. Saturday appointments are available.

Encounter our past THE Glasshouse Regional Gallery will open its doors with a stunning and thought-provoking new exhibition tonight. The East Coast Encounter exhibition reimagines the encounters between James Cook and his crew with Aboriginal people in 1770. The exhibition presents this shared story from various perspectives. The artists explore ideas about custodianship of country, exchange, communication and miscommunication, what it means to be ‘foreign’, and seeing through another person’s eyes. Gallery curator Niomi Sands said it was a significant exhibition of some of Australia’s most celebrated artists. “This exhibition provides an interesting survey of artists’ interpretations of our shared past, and the Glasshouse Regional Gallery is delighted to be the first stop on a two-year national tour,” she said. There are several opportunities for the
community to get involved beyond just viewing the works on display. The first is the opening tonight at 6pm, which will involve local mid north coast artist Sara Wade and Newcastle artists Peter Tilley and Andy Devine. Then there will be a plein-air painting day on Saturday, March 14 and an artist talk with Euan Macleod on Thursday, March 12. The East Coast Encounter will be on show until April 5. Other exhibitions that opened recently include Sam Wade, on view February 13 March 22 and Black Harvest (Andy Devine and Peter Tilley) on view February 13 - March 22. The Glasshouse Regional Gallery is open 10am – 5pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am – 4pm Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. For information about tickets to tonight’s opening and the plen-air painting day and artist talk visit glasshouse.org.au or ph 6581 8888.

Comboyne’s turn to show everyone IT’S show-time again! The 78th Comboyne Show will be held on Saturday, February 28 starting from 9am at the Comboyne showground. As always, it promises to be a day of family fun, and some surprises in the fresh mountain air. Show president Rod Fisher values the Australian agricultural show tradition, but also likes to offer show visitors some new country experiences. As well as the high standard of exhibits in art, craft, photography, cooking, produce, flowers, poultry and championship dog show, there will again be the entertaining and unique program of mountain goat racing. “This event really seems to have captured people’s imagination,” Mr Fisher said. Major sponsor for the goat racing, Sundial Dental at Wauchope and Port Macquarie, is enthusiastically supporting the event. They have won races in previous years and Dr Peter Elfar and staff will again be participating. The goat race program will include the dramatic, popular and entertaining politicians’ race with brave local, state and federal government members and dignitaries. Other highlights include the radio station $500 charity challenge race. 2MC’s Mark Strachan won this event last year and is keen to defend his title, but rumour has it he will have plenty of competition from other local radio stations. Comboyne’s Championship All Breeds Dog Show is noted for its friendly atmosphere, with owners and breeders of the beautiful dogs happy to chat with visitors when they are not actually in the ring being judged. Top dogs from all over the state come to the show, some being grand

champions and some even international imports. The prize for best in show is an original portrait of the winning dog, also promoting our quality local artists. Make sure you have a look at the inspiring new multi-purpose building of unique design (by local artisan Andrew Turner), which is currently in the final stages of construction. You will find it at the southern end of the showground. The full program of entertainment for all ages includes great fun rides for the kids, face painting and Wauchope Youth Theatre Group’s old-time circus performances and musical duo. You can also relax in the shady marquees, browse the market stalls and enjoy the variety of food, including Comboyne’s famous country cooking, with tearoom cakes, salads, Devonshire teas, the big country barbecue plus pancakes, great coffee and ice-cream. What more could you want? Comboyne is beautiful this time of year – come along to enjoy true old-fashioned country hospitality, meet the locals and take in the wonderful mountain scenery, while enjoying a full day of family fun and entertainment. Find out more on the show website at comboyneshow. com Saturday entry is just $5 for adults and free for anyone under 16. There is free parking available at the showground (just follow the signs). On the Sunday, March 1, the showground will be a day for the horse lovers, with equestrian events only. No pavilions will be open, but there will be great country food available, and entry will be by gold-coin donation, to aid the Comboyne Rural Fire Service.

BOWLS Round-Up WESTPORT WOMEN’S THE pennant season for 2015 got under way last week with wins to grade 4 over Port City, Grade 2 over North Haven and an unfortunate loss for grade 1, also against North Haven. All pennant teams are playing at home today and at Lake Cathie next Tuesday, February 24. Those ladies not involved in pennants enjoyed their social game last Thursday with Vivian Clive, Janette Fulford and Ella Wright coming out winners with Jenny Crisp, Faye Laut and Val Carroll taking runners-up prizes. Tuesday twilight games had another successful evening with Leonie Laws, Darrell Irving and Paul Dimock taking winners’ prizes. It is a great time to play in the cool of the evening. Sunday afternoon bowlers battled a stiff breeze but still enjoyed their games and the very relaxed atmosphere. Joy Elford and Dot (pick me) Burley were out-of-the-hat winners. Members are requested to remember the quarterly meeting next week, Thursday, February 26 at 1.30pm.

LAKE CATHIE MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP fours final resulted in a great win for the team of Stewie Hedges, Neil Proctor, Frank Ryan and Geoff Worley, who defeated John Atkins, Harry Hicks, Danny Murray and Mark Atkins. Both teams are to be congratulated on their fine effort. Results of weekly games show Monday’s winners as Ray Stokmanis, Esther Bailey, and Bill Bailey. A great turn out on Thursday saw B Westaway, Reg Garvey and Wayne Garvey go into the winner’s circle. The monthly triples roast morning was a huge success with a host of travelling bowlers from Port Kembla Grange and Port Macquarie joining visitors from North Haven and other clubs, with of course local members. Nine travelling nonbowlers enjoyed the games from the comfort of the club house before joining players in the usual wonderful roast luncheon.
LAKE CATHIE WOMEN’S THIS year’s pennant season got off to a good start with some excellent bowling but mixed results. On Tuesday grades I and 2 lost to Port Macquarie City. The two grade-3 sides played each other and grade 3(2) def grade 3(1). The grade 4s were both playing away – grade 4(1) def Wauchope but grade 4(2) lost to Kew. Later in the week the 3 (2)’s playing away lost to Port Macquarie City and the 3(1)’s had a win at home against North Haven. All the results are posted in full on the championship noticeboard weekly. This Tuesday grades 1, 2 and 4(2) play at home and on Friday grades 3(1), 3(2) and 4(1) all have home games, so if you are free please come along and cheer on the pennant players.
In the under 3-year singles semi-final game, played last Friday, Barbara Roberson def Vicki Bayliss. The final is carded for Saturday, February 21 between Barbara and Rhonda Bateman. It promises to be a very good match. On Tuesday the lucky winning rink was the pennant team of Lorraine Gentles, Anna Innes, Lynne Watson and Patricia O’Brien. On Saturday Patricia’s team came out of the hat again as the lucky winners. As a club we were sad to learn of the passing of Jackie Page from North Haven Bowling Club. We shall miss her cheerfulness and laughter, remember fondly her unforgettable concert acts and admire her bravery. She was an inspiration to many people and is now at peace.
