Residents see red over blowfly issue
It stinks! By CAROLINE STRAINIG
HOT weather and fewer bin collections – if it sounds like a recipe for an unpleasant concoction that could be a bit ripe on the nose, you wouldn’t be too far off the mark. That’s according to a long-time Hastings resident, who claims the move to collecting red bins every other week instead of weekly is also leading to maggots and a resulting explosion in blowflies, which he says have been absent in the region since towns were connected to the sewer mains in the 1960s. Ron Mooney, 70, who has lived in the area all his life, said the blowfly issue resurfaced again around Christmas when the first major spate of hot weather hit since red bin collection switched from weekly to every other week in September. He said it was not confined to just his own bin. “I walk a lot around town for my health and go past the red bins all the time and talk to people,” he said. “Just this morning I walked past a man who was spraying inside his red bin. I asked him if he had maggots and he said he had, and then started pointing to all the other bins in the street and saying they had too. “They seem to be everywhere now.” However, despite Mr Mooney’s assertion
about how widespread the problem was, the blowfly issue was news to Port MacquarieHastings Council staff. Director Development & Environment Matt Rogers said council had not received any complaints about blowflies. “There’s probably a range of environmental factors that contribute to fly populations in any given year,” he said. “I doubt whether the change in bin service would be a broad contributing factor, but it is possible that individuals may experience an increase in flies if they are not managing their fortnightly red bin service effectively. “If residents are properly sorting their organics and putting them in the green bin, then they will be receiving a weekly service for the types of waste that are likely to attract flies, so good practice organics sorting should minimise any fly issues. “We can provide advice on how to get the most out of the new service and how to minimise any odour or fly issues. There’s also some good tips on the website.”

Touch too wet
THE NSW Touch Football Junior State Cup was abandoned on Sunday morning after two days of competition because of heavy and sustained rain. NSW Touch Association general manager Dean Russell said this was not a decision taken lightly. “However, with five days of consistent rain the water no longer has any area to escape to,” he said. “We thank all parents, coaches, managers, affiliate coordinators, referees and all participants for their patience over the first two days.” On the bright side, organisers have just committed to staging the tournament in Port Macquarie for the next three years, which is a major win for the area because it attracts thousands of competitors and supporters, all of whom spend money locally.

Battlers in limbo By CAROLINE STRAINIG
AN emergency relief service that is the last resort for battlers, the homeless and unemployed will end tomorrow – with no replacement service locked in. The chairperson of UnitingCare Port Macquarie, Lynette Deutscher, said the emergency relief service her organisation had run with government funding for the past 30 years would come to an end on the last working day in February, which is tomorrow. This follows a national tender process late last year in which UnitingCare were unsuccessful tenderers. Ms Deutscher said she was not complaining about the fact the government had decided to put the relief distribution to tender and they had lost, but the fact they had been unable to ascertain who had won the tender. This meant that they could not let their clients know where to turn when they shut the doors. “I had three people in tears in here on Wednesday because of the uncertainty,” she said. She said the service currently received $136,000 in funding from the federal government every year and every cent of that money was desperately needed. “This service has been supporting and assisting needy families and individuals in the Hastings
IN BRIEF Reservoir on track
area for 30 years, with our service operating five mornings a week out of the Heritage Chapel in Horton Street, Port Macquarie,” she said. “We interview between 45 and 60 clients a week, many of them struggling to pay the rent, feed the family, pay the electricity account and meet medical expenses and so it goes on.” She said UnitingCare had waited seven months for a response to their tender application, operating on interim funding. They were finally notified on Tuesday, February 3 they would not be receiving any ongoing government funding and started working to a termination date of the end of February. She wrote to Dr Gillespie asking who had won
the tender so they could advise clients. However, Dr Gillespie wrote back without answering that question. She responded with another letter late last week, pointing out her question had not been answered. Asked for comment by the Independent, Dr Gillespie’s office said they had been unable to tell Ms Deutscher the name of the successful tenderer because details were still being finalised, but emergency relief for the area would definitely be made available through another organisation such as St Vincent de Paul or the Salvation Army. They said in instances where the replacement could not take over on March 1 interim funding would continue through March, and this had been stated in Dr Gillespie’s letter to Ms Deutscher. Asked for comment about the March extension, Ms Deutscher said the Department of Social Services had stated they would extend some funding to existing services to the end of March - if the particular organisation chose to take it. “We did not, because the government was simply making use of existing services to try and cover the gap that they knew would occur before the new services got established. It amounts to just extending the agony of what is inevitable.” The Independent will publish details of who is taking over as soon as they are available.
most expensive towns on the North Coast. A motorist travelling 30,000km per year filling up in Grafton or Tweed Heads South would save around $225 compared to a Port Macquarie or Ballina motorist where average unleaded prices were 7.5 cents per litre higher. NRMA deputy president Wendy Machin said it was incomprehensible that the average price in Ballina was 7.5 cents per litre more expensive
than Tweed Heads South – just an hour up the road. “It simply comes down to competition and a stronger presence of independent retailers who often have discounted prices,” Ms Machin said. “It’s no surprise that Grafton, Tweed Heads South, Muswellbrook and Casino were all ranked within the top 10 cheapest average prices in the state – all have independent retailers.”

WORKS on the new 20-megalitre Sancrox Reservoir are progressing well, with the construction of the telemetry and chlorination building underway, the associated pipe work to the reservoir easement commencing shortly and the roof construction due to commence within the next two weeks. The new 20ML water reservoir is required to cater for the current and future demands of urban development west of Port Macquarie including the Thrumster Urban growth area, the Sancrox Employment Precinct and, in the longer term, the Greater Sancrox Investigation Area.
Story-time outside
A NEW outdoor play space for kids is now open at Laurieton Library and the perfect addition to encourage play during the pre-school weekly story-time group. Under the shade of a large existing tree, children now have a space where they can read and play and where staff have the opportunity to engage them in this colourful outdoor addition. The play space has a slippery dip, sand pit, rubber area, rock and seating.
Tops at drink-driving
THE Mid North Coast has scored highly in another top ten, but it’s one we’d all prefer not to be on. The region came in ninth in the list of the top 10 worst drink-driving locations in the state since January 1 2014.
NRMA data shows petrol prices are still too high EXCLUSIVE data obtained by the National Roads & Motorists’ Association has shown that motorists are still paying too much for their petrol in Port Macquarie. The NRMA analysed average price data for unleaded and diesel prices from January 1 2014 to February 8 2015 to determine which towns had the cheapest fuel and found there was a 7.5-cent-per-litre gap between the cheapest and
BE COOL
Ms Machin said motorists could use the NRMA’s online petrol price tools to help plan their petrol stops when travelling around the North Coast. “Bowser Buster ranks the weekly average unleaded and diesel price of 53 NSW/ACT locations, while close of business average prices are updated daily,” Ms Machin said.

Climate change bank protest ON Friday, February 13 local safe climate and clean energy group Climate Change Australia (CCA) joined national climate group 350.org and investment group Market Forces, to raise awareness about the links between the ‘Big 4’ banks and climate change. The group handed out leaflets to the public in front of the Big 4 banks in Port Macquarie to explain the need to halt investment in fossil fuels, especially the proposed Galilee basin
Protect small business
I WAS very heartened to read in comments by the Member for Lyne published elsewhere that the federal National Party has placed a high priority on “the implementation of measures to protect small business from the unfair practices of the major supermarket chains”. State National Party MPs including the Minister for Crown Lands and the Member for Port Macquarie should take heed of their federal colleagues when making their decision on the future of the Plaza car park in Port Macquarie. The car park must remain in public ownership for the benefit
coal projects. Since 2008 the ‘Big 4’ banks have lent $19 billion to coal and gas projects in Australia. It’s worth noting that major international banks have already decided not to do this because of the investment risk, and because they are more committed to planetary sustainability than our banks seem to be. Choices have to be made. The tide is going out for fossil fuels and it’s coming in for clean renewable energy. Kerri-ann Jones CCA spokesperson of the whole community - including small businesses in the CBD - instead of being sold to Woolworths to make a quick buck. The Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce has raised this very issue with the NSW Minister for Small Business and also directly with Premier Mike Baird, and I completely support their approach. All politicians like to acknowledge that small business is the engine room of the economy – particularly in regional areas such as ours. If the National Party is serious about doing something to protect small business from the unfair practices of major supermarket chains, they have a great opportunity right now in Port Macquarie. AS mentioned on page 6 of last week’s Independent in the story ‘The right to choose,’ Dr Rodney Syme, a retired specialist urologist from Melbourne, will participate in the Australian first Q&A Forum on Dying with Dignity in Port Macquarie on Saturday, March 14. However, now Dr Syme will also be conducting end-of-life choices information workshops while in Port Macquarie. We are extremely fortunate that Dr Syme has agreed to conduct these workshops, the first time he has done so outside of Victoria. Dr Syme has openly admitted to enabling terminally ill patients to die
at a time and place of their choosing by giving them the means and knowledge to end their suffering. He has called on the Australian Medical Association to survey doctor members on the issue of medically assisted dying. The workshops will help people prepare for a dignified death and explain how to avoid an undignified death in dementia. Rarely do people have access to openly discuss end-of-life choices with a doctor and, significantly, the opportunity is not available anywhere else in NSW. The cost is $35 and the workshops will be held on Thursday, March 12

Powerful ‘piffle’ LAST week I received a very strange, unsolicited letter from Mr Rick Colless, a National Party member of the NSW Upper House, skiting that the Nationals “have negotiated” with the Liberals on electricity privatisation. He
asserted that the results of his party’s negotiations will provide regional customers with all “of the rewards with none of the risk”. I thought for a moment that Port Macquarie must have had a new local state member. I replied to Mr Colless that his letter smacked of self-righteousness and his assertions were more than likely piffle. I informed Mr Colless that he should

TO the inconsiderate people who think they have the right to damage other people’s cars and drive off as if nothing happened and leave the cost of repair to that owner. The car was just picked up from the spray painters for the same reason and because of this person we have had to fork out more money to get it fixed again.

New home for car club “
Eventually we would love to have a national title
“
PORT Macquarie will soon have a new recreational facility for a fast-growing family sport – remote-control car racing. A part of the former 1000-yard rifle range within the Hastings Regional Shooting Complex is to be set aside for the laying down of a track on which sophisticated remote-controlled model cars can take part in some hair-raising racing. Shooting complex chairman John Tingle says negotiations are almost complete for the Port Macquarie Remote Control Car Club to lay down a track for their cars in an unused area of the former big-bore rifle range. Shooting on the 1000-yard range was suspended by the Police Firearms Registry in 2013, because the extension of the airport runway to the south brought the runway into the so-called “drop zone” of stray bullets from the 1000-yard range, which points towards the airport at a distance of about 900 metres. Last year the registry withdrew the approval number for the range in the interest of public safety, meaning it could no longer be used for long-range shooting. “Now that the Port Macquarie Rifle Club is no longer a member club of the shooting complex, the 1000-yard range which it used to shoot on is no longer used,” Mr Tingle said. “The PMRCCC was looking for somewhere to be able to run their cars, and the complex committee voted to give them an area, and approval was obtained from the Crown Lands Department and the council.” Until now, the car club has not had a home track, and has travelled to Taree to use the Manning Valley club’s track.

POLICE NEWS Man assaulted
JUST after 2am on Sunday morning a 26-yearold male was walking in Horton Street in Port Macquarie when he has had a verbal altercation with a 23-year-old male. The older male has walked away towards the intersection of Horton and Williams streets and then was allegedly struck in the back of the legs by the younger male. An altercation started and the older male was knocked to the ground, where his head was allegedly stomped on by the younger. When police arrived, numerous witnesses pointed out the accused on the opposite side of the road. He was arrested and conveyed to the police station, while the victim was treated by ambulance and conveyed to the hospital for scans on his skull. The accused was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray. He was bailed to appear at the Port Macquarie Local Court on March 18.
High-range PCA The cars they race are electrically driven and virtually noiseless and are capable of speeds of 100 kmph. It is a fast growing sport, and the PMRCCC hopes to arrange interclub meetings with other remote-control car clubs several times a year. Mr Tingle said establishment of the track would not interfere with the activities of the six shooting clubs which make up the complex, because the car track would be in an area away from the several ranges of the complex. “It’s interesting that the closure of the 1000yard range has created an impression with some people that all shooting on the complex has stopped,” he said. “But the six remaining clubs continue to operate, as before, on their own
ranges, which are not affected in any way, by the extension of the runway, or the closure of the old range.” Car Club president David Ford said club members were over the moon about having a permanent home after many years of meeting at vacant blocks of land and travelling to competitions outside the Hastings. He hoped the track would become a tourist attraction in its own right. “Eventually we would love to have a national titles with up to 150-200 entrants and of course their families and supporters would all come to,” he said. Enquiries about the club to David.ford@ hearing.com.au
AT about 8.30pm on Sunday police received information that a white Holden Commodore was being driven in Mahogany Way in Wauchope in an erratic manner, mounting kerbs and front lawns of homes. When police arrived, they found the vehicle parked halfway on the kerb and roadway with a trail of pasta from the vehicle into the yard of a home. At the house police spoke to the 41-year-old female registered owner, who appeared to be well affected by intoxicating liquor. She was breath-tested and upon a positive reading was placed under arrest for the purposes of a breath analysis. At Wauchope Police Station she returned a high-range reading seven times over the legal limit. Her licence was suspended, and she was issued with a court attendance notice to attend Wauchope Local Court on March 12.

Premier’s Award to Sunrise Rotary Picture: PMHC Lee Wood, Lucilla Marshall, Julie Priest and Jacqui Morgan trying out the new table
Anyone for table tennis?
PORT Macquarie now has a permanent outdoor table-tennis table near the skate park on Town Beach reserve, thanks to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s place-making team. Fabricated from 10mm steel, the new weather-proof table-tennis table offers a free activity for all residents to enjoy. Permanent table-tennis tables have been enjoyed in public spaces for decades across China, Berlin, Barcelona, Paris, London, Copenhagen and New York and the idea is now
spreading to Australia. “This is a great opportunity for kids, seniors, families or groups of friends to come down and have a go at playing the world’s most popular racket sport,” Community & Economic Growth director Tricia Bulic said. “As well as providing enjoyment for the community, the table also represents a wonderful piece of urban art.” You can bring your own bats and balls or hire them for free from the Town Beach kiosk.
THE Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise has been recognised for its outstanding community work with a Premier’s Award presented by Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams on behalf of the NSW government. “The club has put its stamp on many local projects and supported an untold number of community organisations and events exemplifying Rotary’s primary motto Service above Self,” Mrs Williams said. “The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise is an exceptional team of people comprising community and business representatives who continue to initiate projects that benefit others. “Their latest project steered by Neil Black is the Tacking Point Lighthouse Restoration Project and it has been a privilege to be able to provide them with financial support to ensure its success. “The club also supports the Mera School in Kharakhola Village in Nepal, recognises local sports players through the Annual Hastings Sports Awards and is a significant contributor to Rotary Lodge and the global program of polio
Rotary’s Robert Clarke receives the award from Mrs Williams eradication. “The Rotary Club is a worthy recipient of the ‘Premier’s Award’ – the first awarded to a community organisation in our electorate.” Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise president Robert Clarke said it was a proud honour to receive the award. “Our members work as a strong volunteer team with thousands of volunteer hours invested in our community every year,” he said.

A Community Engagement and Communications Plan is under development and will include a strong focus on education and awareness raising of the FFF program. Local government must ensure we are fit for the future A MODERN local government sector with strong councils providing the services and infrastructure communities need is a shared objective of Port Macquarie Hastings Council, its community and the NSW government. All councils are asked to assess performance against the criteria; sustainability, infrastructure and service management, and efficiency. The NSW government envisages that such councils will be smarter, sustainable and strategic and have community assets that are well planned and maintained, have right services, right people and right place, be efficient, focussed and community leaders.

Director of parish education John McQueen with Mrs Williams and school principal Tony Watts at the announcement How long have you lived in or around Port Macquarie? My wife Julie and I have lived in Port Macquarie for the past 18 years. Prior to that we lived in the Manning Valley for eight years and were regular visitors to the Hastings. What do you love most about the Hastings? What’s not to love? The beaches, the lifestyle and natural beauty are all fantastic, and we have a great café and restaurant culture here. Where do you work and what do you love most about your work? I’m the senior advisor to the Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams. I love the diversity and the unique opportunity to learn about and assist our local community. What do you like least about your work? There is nothing I dislike about my job, but I must admit sometimes when we hear stories about the challenges some people face it can get to you a bit, but it is heartening and rewarding to be able to help them. How do you start your day? I like to keep fit so most mornings I get up at 4.30 to go to the gym for an hour or so, I grab the work papers and mail before heading home for breakfast, a shower and heading into work. What do you do in your spare time? I like listening to music, reading books, going out to dinner with friends, cooking, good wine, swimming and spending time with my wife. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Being happily married for 34 years! What makes your day? See above! How do you like your coffee? Skinny cap or strong black.

Ready for a shave: Julie Chapman, Robyn Mani, Tresna Bell, Ann-Marie Wright, Natalie King, Bree Brown, Pat Thompson and CEO Paul Geddes IN support of colleagues and friends who are journeying through various cancer treatments, nine members of Port Macquarie Private Hospital’s staff have committed to shaving their heads next month. The story started when four operating theatre staff members were diagnosed with either breast, bowel or skin cancer. A discussion began among some of the theatre staff about how many present and past staff had battled cancer or passed away from it. In an act of community spirit, five staff put their hands up to shave their heads in the World’s Greatest Shave, which will take place on Tuesday, March 3. From there other staff - including hospital CEO Paul Geddes - also volunteered to shave their heads. “The community spirit is very alive and the

THE NSW Government and St Peter’s Primary School in Port Macquarie will jointly fund the construction and refurbishment of general learning areas at the school. Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said the project would see $566,607 in funding from the NSW government and $242,832 from St Peter’s allocated to provide two new classrooms and refurbish 10 existing classrooms. “The funding will greatly enhance the learning experience for students at St Peter’s Primary School,” Mrs Williams said.
Gaye’s doing it too
Gaye Robins from the Parklands retirement village in Port Macquarie will also be shaving her head, but in her case on Saturday, March 14. You can donate at the World’s Greatest Shave website and can also support her by attending an afternoon tea at that village at 2pm on that day.
Even the Devil had a dictionary IN 1811 Ambrose Bierce in his Devil’s Dictionary described any dictionary (excluding his own) as “a malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language”. Over the past 20 years several people have asked me many questions about the words, in the English language. One in the past few weeks came from “Max” who said I have often remarked about “my big dictionary”. “It must be huge,” he said. My dictionary comprises 20 large volumes and when I bought it many years ago I think it was selling for about $5000. To be fair, my family bought it for my birthday and was given a discounted price, but it still cost a few thousand dollars. Dictionaries as we now know them have been with us for at least 600 years. I have what is named The First English Dictionary dated 1604, by Robert Cawdrey. Cawdrey said his first edition was “a table alphabeticall, conteyning the true writing and understanding of hard words”. So a dictionary didn’t set out to publish all the words in our language, just in Cawdrey’s case ”the hard words”. I am sure Bierce had a devil of a time with his 1811 dictionary. The first “proper” dictionary was that put out by Samuel Johnson. He was a bit of a homourless man who regarded some of the greats of the English language as his neighbours and drinking

partners who had just as many problems as he had. I went to his house in Gough Square, just off Fleet Street, London, many years ago. I knocked on the door of the little cottage with a cat on the front mat, but nobody answered. A week later I knocked on the door again and nobody answered, so I went to the four-storey building next door. An old man answered my knock and I explained that I wanted to look through Johnson’s house. “Sure, come on in,” he said. Johnson lived in the four-storey building, not the little cottage. Johnson spoke many times of the superiority of the English and - how should I say it because I have been castigated about this - Johnson had little time for the Scots. He said on one occasion “the finest prospect a Scotchman ever sees is the high road that takes him to England”. He didn’t think much of the Irish either. “The Irish are fair people; they speak ill of everybody”. And his views of the French? “A Frenchman must always
be talking. An Englishman talks only when he has something to say.” His dictionary says of oats: “A grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people.” My big dictionary says the word dictionary goes back to 1526 in writing, but no doubt people were speaking about the word dictionary before that. These days we don’t worry about spelling, or even grammar. Our computer does much of it for us. It even puts a little red line under our mistakes. My big dictionary was published by Oxford. The completion of this dictionary was a monumental task that took more than 50 years. Dictionaries weren’t always compiled by fine, upstanding citizens. The Dictionary of American Underworld Lingo was compiled by Bad Bill, Hal the Rebel, Jojo and the Colonel, whose occupations included armed robber, terrorist and purse snatcher. In case anybody thinks I have tried to belittle Samuel Johnson—he wasn’t such a bad bloke really. One of his most trusted advisers was called Barber. www.lauriebarber.com or lbarber@midcoast. com.au.

Granny flat promo launched Big demand for affordable rental By CAROLINE STRAINIG
Mayor Peter Besseling joins school children for a LEGO session
LEGO let loose at library THE timeless appeal of LEGO was underlined yet again at the Port Macquarie Library last week. Children rushed to turn their dream creations into reality as soon as the LEGO Brick By Brick: Build Your Own National Capital exhibition was opened by Mayor Peter Besseling. Even the mayor had a go at making something, taking a trip down memory lane back to when he was a small boy and used to play with LEGO.
The exhibition will be at the library for six weeks, given children the chance to recreate a national capital building from a plan or create their own building from scratch. The National Capital Authority developed the display as an engaging way to tell Australians about their national capital. The activity will run Monday to Friday, 10am - 4.30pm, until April 8. With over 30,000 LEGO bricks to play with, there should be no shortage of building material.
PORT Macquarie home owners have been urged to build granny flats to cash in on strong demand for affordable rental accommodation. The Regional Development Australia launched a granny flat promotion last Thursday at Charles Sturt University, chosen as the venue because granny flats are a much sought after form of accommodation for university students. The university is also expected to expand by at least 200 students a year over the next 10 years so that demand is only going to increase. The RDA Affordable Housing Promotion had a soft opening on February 1 with the unveiling of a website - housingpromotion.com.au - with information about building a granny flat and lowinterest loan offers from lending providers. While the major banks are still making up their minds, credit unions have jumped on board in a big way, seeing the promotion as an extremely positive move for the community. Seven were listed on the website earlier this week, with Community Mutual leading the way with a very attractive loan rate of 4.50 per cent. Many were also slashing fees. RDA Mid North Coast CEO Lorraine Gordon said there was a growing demand for affordable housing among low-income earners in our community, ranging from students to the elderly, single parents and people living with a disability. Building a granny flat was also a great investment in terms of return.
Mid North Coast CEO Lorraine Gordon “Our website illustrates that rental yields on a granny flat can be triple the yield of a median rental house,” Ms Gordon said. “This promotion allows the home owner to build a granny flat on very favourable terms that will bring an attractive rental income, adds value and income to the family home and gives our construction industry a much needed boost. It’s a win-win.” Port Macquarie-Hastings Council was also praised for leading the way in the region in terms of making the application process as simple and easy as possible.

MACLEAY Valley Travel has a wonderfulthree-week tour to the Iberian triangle departing later this year. The Iberian triangle incorporates the countries of Spain, Portugal and Morocco, which are ancient and enigmatic lands with a mixture of historical and cultural influences through successive occupations by Celts, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and the Moors. This special triangle of nations provides the traveller with a unique opportunity to savour the subtleties of its fascinating and complex origins, where history, custom, language and religion have interwoven over the millennia,
leaving extraordinary rich, diverse and vibrant cultures. Spain today embodies all the contrasts of an ancient land of the Mediterranean with its rich and varied culture and language, while the Republic of Portugal is a small but vibrant nation with a deep sense of its history and tradition. Morocco is also a true feast for the senses and its marvellous Kasbahs, medinas and souks with their bustling activity and colour are an absolute treat for the visitor. THE controversial topic of free-camping was tackled at Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s ordinary council meeting last week. Council noted the preliminary results from the freedom-camping management trial survey, which was undertaken in September. During the management trial no-camping signs were erected in a number of popular camping locations and campers in these areas were surveyed. Director of Community and Economic Growth Tricia Bulic said that the research would provide a better understanding of the demographic of free campers and the data would be further analysed to help formulate management options and develop a draft free-camping management strategy. Three hundred campers completed the survey and 100 local residents and users of the recreational also had input. Of the 300 campers, 76 per cent were international visitors with the main reason for visiting being a stopover on their way north or south. The draft strategy will be presented at a council meeting in March. Andrew Crane of the Save Our Parks group, which is campaigning for controls on free-camping, addressed councillors about his group’s concerns at the meeting, including showing images of some disturbing sites they had photographed at local parks, which included

Good news on cancer front Prostate results show high cure rate
Adam – “I have a passion for young people”
Meet YFC’s Adam Burton
I’VE seen God working through in me throughout my life. Though I have not always known God – I have always been known by God! His hand has been on my life and with the benefit of hindsight I can see it so clearly. Before I became a Christian in year 8 I hated school. It was a drag to go through the same stuff every day. After being sent to a camp in Forester I became a Christian and things in my life started to make sense. They were never easy. Within the first month of my conversion three people close to me all died. Where was God? At the end of year 12 last year, I was praying about where I was to go next. I felt it in my heart to contact the director of Port Macquarie Youth for Christ who I had become familiar with and consider the internship. Within four days I had an interview and got the position. What a blessing. I have a passion for young people in our community and a passion to see the lost found, broken fixed and lives changed by the gospel lived out and not just preached. Adam Burton Port Macquarie YFC intern
RESEARCH published in the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology shows that external-beam radiation therapy – which is available here on the Mid North Coast - is a highly effective treatment option for prostate cancer. Men with localised prostate cancer who are treated with external-beam radiation therapy have a cure rate of 95.5 per cent for intermediaterisk prostate cancer and 91.3 per cent for highrisk prostate cancer. The five-year survival rate using this treatment is 98.8 per cent overall. When compared to other common treatment options such as surgery or brachytherapy, external-beam was as effective and in some cases more effective. The radiation oncologist at the North Coast Cancer Institute, A/Prof Tom Shakespeare, led the eight-year study comparing the effectiveness of external-beam radiation therapy with other common treatment options such as surgery or brachytherapy. The patients were treated by Prof Shakespeare at NCCI cancer centres in Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Lismore. “The main outcome that we have seen from this study is that external-beam radiation therapy is one of the most effective treatment options for prostate cancer,” he said.
Professor Tom Shakespeare
“These are great results showing that radiation therapy is as effective, or even better, than other common treatment options such as surgery or brachytherapy. “In fact, based on the literature reviewed, it appears that external-beam radiation therapy is a superior treatment in many cases. “The other important finding was that patients treated with radiotherapy had some of the lowest side-effect rates in Australia.
“Based on these results, it is critical that all patients can access multidisciplinary care or be referred to a radiation oncologist for a discussion of this treatment option. “Unfortunately, this does not always happen. “As a regional oncologist I am also proud to demonstrate that regional centres such as the North Coast Cancer Institute can achieve these excellent outcomes, similar to the metropolitan centres of excellence in Sydney or Melbourne.”
Image obsessed
Do we really need to take so many photos of ourselves today?
THE growth of online social media has created a culture of young people obsessed, even addicted, with creating, cultivating and maintaining their online image in order to gain a sense of worth. Perhaps we have modernised the ancient myth of Narcisus, a young man who, it is said, fell so in love with himself that he spent all his time by the river gazing at his own reflection and not really living. Are smart phones and the internet becoming that self-reflection for many young (and older people) people? But our image is not our own. We were made in the image of God and created to be a reflection of that. I believe in a culture of young people who know whose image they are made in. Whose identity is not based on what they look like on the surface, or how “impressive” their image appears to others, but on the knowledge that they are loved by God. Young people who reflect Christ’s love in heart, word and action. Mike Albany Storytelling & Communications Manager Youth for Christ Australia

All the Good stuff in our Community
‘Spiritual war’ is real
WE all go through tough times, most of them brought on by ourselves because we choose to take the wrong fork in the road. I’ve done this most of my life until the past eight years where I have cleaned up my act, for the most part. I am definitely not “as pure as the driven snow” but I know I’m now definitely on the right track. The hardest part of being on the right track is that we come under what Australians call the tall-poppy syndrome, which is actually spiritual warfare. “Warfare,” you say, “what a crock!” I’m here to tell you that spiritual warfare is real, very real! I know because I’m living with it and deal with it every day and believe it or not chances are you are too; you just haven’t identified the problem. The thing is, when you finally find your purpose in life everything and everyone is going to come up against you, especially when you live in faith under God’s grace. This is Satan’s way of distracting you from fulfilling your purpose. By now many of you (readers and advertisers) are probably thinking “what the?” Well the ‘what the’ is this: I firmly believe that my purpose is to be the custodian of this paper and to make sure that you all get to read about and align

your businesses with all the ‘good stuff in our community’. To make this happen we have gone out on a limb by running this monthly feature and change the entire focus of the paper to share positive community news. The reader response has been absolutely amazing, and we have received loads of very positive feedback. Thank you! The flip side of the coin? In the six-and-a-half years that I have been involved with this paper I have been asked on numerous occasions by businesses/organisations to run a regular section such as this and change the focus of the paper, so they are comfortable spending their advertising dollars around good positive community stories.
Excuse my sarcasm; as an expat Kiwi I’ll quote the Tui beer ads “Yeah Right!” So much support promised; so little action taken. However, I soldier on in Faith knowing that this is just another distraction designed to try and cut me off at the knees and not fulfil my life purpose. Spiritual warfare at its best! Now don’t get me wrong; this is not an opportunity to have a go at people - this an opportunity to share how to overcome this situation of spiritual warfare. Here’s the thing, every day I get up and come to the office where our small team does our community a service; completely in faith. Every day I thank God for this weekly miracle, that we are able to serve our community in a positive way that impacts people from all walks of life in so many ways. Every week we see growth in our paper and more support from businesses which shows us that our work is appreciated, every week we do battle to ensure that our service grows and every minute of every day I give thanks and praise to God that with him we are winning the battle and with that I stake my claim and with God’s authority just say . . . get behind me Satan!
Co-op’s great idea THE Hastings Co-op thought it would try something a little different for Valentine’s Day recently. Due to the success of the random shareholder giveaways the co-op did during the car promotion last year, they thought they’d do it again but instead of a voucher this time CEO Allan would pay for a customer’s groceries. The first winner at Port Macquarie IGA was Kevin, who exclaimed, “I think I might have a heart attack!” The joke lasted as long as it took one of the staff to inform everyone that, only recently, Kevin had had a triple bypass (don’t worry he’s fine)! The second winner, Erica, a shopper at Timbertown IGA, was equally shocked, as was the third winner, Jann, a shopper at Wauchope Supa IGA. Near heart-failure aside, Hastings Co-op staff think the RAOK went really well.
Port Macquarie IGA winner Kevin is congratulated by CEO Allan (left)
Q: Do we worship on Saturday or Sunday? A: A reader sent me a question supported by some strong points as to the importance of worshipping on a Saturday, the biblical sabbath. Rather than enter into a never-ending debate, let me simply say that according to God it doesn’t matter when or where we worship but how we worship. In John chapter 4 in the dialogue between Jesus and the woman at the well (she was a Samaritan and Jesus was a Jew). The woman was thrown by a revelation Jesus gave her about her husband and to try and divert the
with Kerry Medway discussion, she began to espouse the difference between the two places of worship for Jews and Samaritans. Jesus declared (John 4:21 and 23): “Believe me woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. A time is coming
and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in Spirit and Truth. For they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.” True worship according to Jesus is not where or on what day, nor even in what church. The true worshippers
of God worship him in spirit, i.e. we need to be born again of the spirit of God and worship him heart-toheart and spirit to Spirit. Secondly, the true worshipper must worship God for who he is, the revelation of himself in his word, the Bible. We are to worship God in the truth of who he is, not as a grandfather in the sky or a figment of our imagination. If you don’t know God personally, seek him out through one our local churches and discover his amazing love in Jesus Christ.

School remembers apology THE apology to Australian indigenous peoples was delivered by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on February 13 2008. The apology recognised the effects of various policies regarding indigenous peoples. Port Macquarie High School remembered the apology by holding a short ceremony on the anniversary. Indigenous students of the school learned about the significance of the apology and presented principal Ms Haddon with a framed apology to be put on display at the school.

Way back when With Pastor, Kerry Medway IN September 2000 a team of men under the banner of Promise Keepers and led by Dennis Bax, Trevor Suitor and Roger Munro constructed Rhema House on Hamilton Green. Many men from the local churches banded together, builders, tradesmen and labourers along with local Christian businesses who donated their skills and labour along with materials to Port Macquarie’s Christian radio station

The building was almost built on one weekend and after five months, with much joy and excitement, Rhema Radio staff and volunteers moved equipment and furnishings into the new building. PORT Macquarie Base Hospital’s Maternity Unit was an unexpected beneficiary of World Sound Healing Day earlier this month. Jaye Roberts, a massage therapist and acutonic practitioner who owns Sivana Bliss Retreat in Port Macquarie, took part in the unique global sound event which coincides with Valentines Day every year. Those who attended her meditation session at Hastings Public School were not only taking part in a worldwide peace and harmony event, but they also made a donation to the hospital’s Maternity Unit. Nurse unit manager Sandra Eadie thanked Ms Roberts and those who participated in the event for the $200 gift, which will help support new mothers during their stay in hospital.

He hears our words but doesn’t listen to them! God loves you just the way you are…..right now! Exactly as we are now, not when we’ve repented, transformed, had a revelation, changed habits or decided to DO Church and act all religious…….. He loves us as we are now. Amen. John 3:16 ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son.’ That was not for those that had repented but for everyone as we are now. It’s your choice; all we have to do is ask God the Father from our hearts to reveal himself. That’s what he calls praying. NOTE: When we pray he hears our words but doesn’t listen to them, he listens to our hearts. There are lots of Gods out there so to be sure, to be sure, when we pray to our Heavenly Father refer to him as our Lord God Almighty, God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Creator of the heavens and the earth………..then spill your heart. He doesn’t want promises and good intentions from you. No amount of good deeds, tithing or sacrifice will make us worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven. That sort of nonsense comes from a religious spirit and churchism. He loves us and wants a relationship with us exactly as we are now – warts, farts and all! Just ask him. Amen!

Graeme Connors heads south to bring us North AFTER a state-wide tour of Queensland, multi-award-winner Graeme Connors’ 25th anniversary celebration of his landmark album North is now headed our way. Graeme will be bringing North and his own special brand of magic to the Glasshouse on Thursday, March 5. As one of Australia’s most loved songwriters, he creates cinematic-style stories with music
that we can hold on to and songs that somehow make sense of our lives even when we can’t. Recently voted by his peers #3 Best Australian Country Albums of All Time, North was written about his Queensland roots, describing life in the north with songs like Cyclone Season, Let the Canefields Burn and the iconic title track A Little Further North Each Year.
Queensland’s #1 singer songwriter has always had the spirit of his hometown and state in his songs and it shines all through this album. In the first half of the show he will perform the complete album North, from beginning to end, in the same order as the songs were recorded on the album. The second half of the show will be stacked with the hits and audience favourites from 17 CDs.
Country Series Friday 6 March 2015, Port Macquarie SPECIAL GUEST APPEARANCES:
Manu Feildel,
Chef and Host of Channel 7’s MKR
Carol & Adam,
NSW contestants from Channel 7’s MKR
RACING & GRAZING * Free Gourmet Barbecue
Graeme hates being pigeonholed as a country singer and finds his music attracts a wide crosssection of fans who love other varieties of music like the blues and folk songs. He also works hard to keep things fresh and new. “Every album is a separate project and I do my best not to repeat myself because I don’t want to do the same thing twice,” he said. “The result is it’s a fairly eclectic mix. Some quite country, a lot of story-telling. I am hard to pigeonhole in a particular genre and I find my music attracts many people who would not consider themselves country fans.” Tickets for his Thursday, March 5 performance at the Glasshouse which starts at 7.30pm are priced from $49. To book visit glasshouse.org.au or ph 6581 8888.

Elvis to the Max
ELVIS fans will be able to indulge their passions to the max next month – literally. One of the world’s first and most successful Elvis impersonators, Max Pellicano, will be bringing his hit show Elvis to the Max to the Glasshouse on Thursday March 19. It has been said by media worldwide that the Max Pellicano tribute goes beyond mere impersonation. Critics have described his performances as “Elvis resurrected” and “reincarnated”. “His recreation looks, moves, vocal style, impressions and humour - is so accurate, it’s awe-inspiring,” one critic said. An interview with Max and a sneak peak at his current show will be printed in the Independent next week. Tickets cost from $59. To book visit glasshouse. org.au or ph 6581 8888.

Panthers goes bonsai
BONSAI trees, Samurai swords, a Japanese tea ceremony, Geisha girl paintings and kimonos are just some of the things that are on offer this weekend. The Hastings Bonsai Group will be holding their second annual three-day bonsai exhibition at the Port Panthers auditorium from 9.30pm to 5pm this Friday and Saturday, and 9.30am till 3pm on Sunday. Bonsai is the ancient art of growing trees in pots or trays, and dates back 2000 plus years. More than 100 beautiful trees will be on display, some almost 70 years old This year, the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is celebrating 25 years of friendship
15
with sister city, Handa in Japan, and the bonsai exhibition will be a part of the celebrations. On Saturday afternoon, after the official opening at 1.30pm by Mayor Peter Besseling, at 2pm there will be a performance of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony by a group of Japanese ladies from Newcastle - maybe a first for Port Macquarie. There will also be bonsai demonstrations and fun competitions over the three days. Entry is $4 for adults, $2 concession and children under 16 free. Club enquiries to Lance on 0419 850 056.
POPULAR French chef Manu Feildel from Channel 7’s top-rating program My Kitchen Rules will be a special guest at Port Macquarie’s second heat of the Country Championships on Friday, March 6. Manu will be joined by MKR’s NSW contestants Carol and Adam, the latter a former professional tennis player. Port Macquarie Race Club will conduct the second of seven $100,000 qualifying races, with Tamworth, Wagga, Grafton, Goulburn and Dubbo to follow next month. First and second in each heat will then head to Royal Randwick on Saturday, April 4 to compete for a $300,000 purse in the final of the Country Championships (1400m). At each of the Country Championship days, the race club will host a designated ‘Racing and Grazing’ area that provides patrons with a free gourmet barbecue and live entertainment, with Port Macquarie offering music by Besty & Andy’s Funhouse. Port Macquarie Race Club CEO Michael Bowman said the Country Championships series was a fantastic initiative. “Our club is looking forward to a massive afternoon of racing and entertainment. My Kitchen Rules’ Manu is an extremely popular celebrity and no doubt many will attend just to see him in person,” Mr Bowman said. “Putting on a $100,000 race gives horses, trainers and jockeys in the region the chance to shine. Already we have fielded many inquiries from connections asking about the event.
Manu – on his way to the Mid North Coast next month “Aside from the racing, the free gourmet barbeque and live entertainment will be excellent crowd pullers so we’re expecting a sizeable crowd.” The NSW government has been a strong supporter of the championships, investing $10 million to ensure the series continues to be a world-class event. This year’s championships will be held on Saturday, April 4 and 11 at Royal Randwick, where the 12 grand finals of Australian thoroughbred racing will be centre stage incorporating eight group-one events as well as the initial provincial and country championships.

WESTPORT WOMEN’S
VERY little to report this week as rain caused the pennant, Thursday’s social and Sunday afternoon games to be abandoned. Tuesday twilight saw a reduced turnout due mostly to the extra pennant games played by members - as a result there were no draws. We hope to see you next week so please put your name on the lists in the Dolphin room or ring the bowls office on 6588 7220 to register. Visitors are welcome on all our bowling days – please put your name on the lists in the Dolphin room or ring the bowls office. Members are requested to remember the quarterly meeting on Thursday, February 26 at 1.30 p.m. unless the rain persists when the meeting will commence at 10am.
Social bowls: Wednesday winners: J Davies and R Carkeek. Thursday winners: P Harper and M Bugler. Friday: Wet weather washed out bowls. Sunday: Although the skies cleared it was still too wet for bowls.

LAKE CATHIE WOMEN’S
TUESDAY’S pennant results favoured the visiting teams, who all won! Our grade 1 and 2 sides both lost to North Haven, and grade 4-2 lost to Port Macquarie City. Both grade 3 sides were playing at Port Macquarie City and lost. However, two of the teams won their rink. Friday was to be a busy day at Lake Cathie with both grade 3 teams, our grade 4-1 pennant ladies and also the final of the under 3-year singles set down to be played. However, the weatherman had other ideas, and these events will now take place at a later date. On Tuesday, the lucky rink winners were Carol Banks, Wendy Kennedy, Joan Bird and Jennie Wallis from Port City. Saturday alas was a washout. The nomination sheet for major singles is on the board. Entries close Tuesday, March 17 with the first round to be played on or before Tuesday, March 31. Next Tuesday, March 3, is our monthly trade table and the 10am. Golden Girls morning tea. The grade 3 and grade 4 pennant sides are playing at
home so the club will be buzzing. There is also a quarterly meeting after bowls, so please stay as there are some important topics. Wednesday, March 4 is classic pairs day – a great competition and good prize money – uniform or whites please. The teams can be mixed and it costs only $12 for the three games but lunch is extra. Saturday, February 28 is second chance draw night. Great prizes to be won and join us for an Irish Night with Dave. Sure to be lots of fun!

Paddlers ready to defend crown
PORT Macquarie’s outrigger paddlers will return to the scene of one of their most memorable triumphs when they set out to defend their Sydney Harbour Challenge crown this weekend. The Maroro club surprised many of its rivals by taking out the open mixed race at last year’s inaugural Sydney Harbour event.
After a strong pre-season and a successful regatta at Newcastle last month, Port Macquarie will take three crews and plenty of confidence into the 25km event. However, head coach Wes Byrnes said his charges were under no illusions as to the size of the challenge facing them this Saturday.
Weather reduces sailing fleet AFTER a few damaged boats from a heavy weekend at the Booti Booti Cup at Forster last weekend, then a few days of rain and a promise of light winds for this Sunday’s race, the fleet for the Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s double-header was quite diminished. The morning summer series race had only three monohulls. Simon Gandy and Stuart Symons on Voyager won on yardstick, followed by Tony Walker on Deep Purple and Rob Barwick on Magic. The handicap results were Magic, Voyager, and Deep Purple. The afternoon club championship race for the catamarans was a one-horse race where Tony
Kuhn on Stella had a great sail around the course for both yardstick and handicap points. In the club championship race for the monohulls Terry Howard on Ratz joined the fleet and took the yardstick win ahead of Deep Purple and Voyager. The handicap results were Voyager, Ratz and Deep Purple. Next Sunday is the Harold Dick Memorial Marathon starting at 11am. Conditions permitting, the fleet will race from the sailing club to Town Green, then up to the Dennis Bridge on the Pacific Highway, and back to the sailing club. Volunteers are needed.
