No one should have to die like she did
Lesley Dunn with a photo of her late mother Ethel
MORE COVERAGE: Are the candidates in the state election game to make public their views on medically assisted dying? Find out on page 10. For a comment from Mid North Coast Health on how Mrs Dunn’s mother was treated turn to page 10. For details of the medically assisted dying forum turn to the advertisement on page 8.
WHEN Port Macquarie resident Lesley Dunn thinks about her late mother, she cries. Lesley admits part of this is because she still misses her, but the other part is because of how she died. Eighty-nine-year-old Ethel died from painful terminal cancer in 2013, and Lesley was there to hold her hand every step of the way. She had been suffering from a metastatic melanoma. What made her death even harder for Lesley was that Ethel had been transferred from a palliativecare unit to a nursing home shortly before she died because of a beds shortage. Eight days later she was dead, and those last days will remain with Lesley for ever. “She was in a terrible lot of pain,” Lesley said with emotion. “She just wanted to die. She just wanted to go.” She believes her mother should have been allowed to die in a palliative care ward instead of a nursing home and the system failed her

completely, but beyond that she should have had the option of a medically assisted death. Lesley complained to the authorities about her mother being transferred to the nursing home and the lack of a formal palliative care plan, but the authorities told her they were satisfied proper protocols had been followed, although they acknowledged a care plan had been lacking. She was not satisfied with that finding, but has now moved onto the bigger picture and the battle to get legislation enacted to legalise medically assisted dying as an option for the terminally ill. “Two days before she died my mother made me promise to do something,” Lesley said. “She said no one should have to die like she did.” Lesley is just one of dozens of people who has submitted a possible question for the panel at the Dying with Dignity forum to debate the pros and cons of medically assisted dying at Port Panthers on Saturday, March 14. She hopes the forum will highlight the issue and pressure the state and federal government to rethink their lack of action in legalising medically assisted dying for the terminally ill. “The polls show overwhelming support, but politicians are ignoring them,” Lesley said. “I would like to see politicians have a conscience vote on this rather than have a vote on party lines.”

Police continue to search bush for missing toddler POLICE were continuing to scour bushland between Bonny Hills and Lake Cathie earlier this week as the hunt for missing toddler William Tyrell (pictured) continued. On Monday search crews operating on a tipoff started searching an area in the vicinity of Houston Mitchell Drive and Long Point Drive. Tensions were high when bones were found on Monday, but forensic examination confirmed these were animal bones. The homicide squad told the Daily Telegraph they were was searching the area for the first time because of their own enquiries and information
from the public. Three-year-old William was last seen playing in his grandmother’s front yard at Kendall in September, 20km from the current search area. Hundreds of members of the local community helped police and SES volunteers search for the youngster after he went missing, but no trace was found. Only last week police widened the search, issuing an international appeal for information as to the boy’s whereabouts. Coincidentally, Bill Spedding, the repairman previously identified as a person of interest

Well known Port Macquarie photographer Steve Harris from Fab Photos and Fab Models also contacted the Independent with some advice for would-be models, saying some of his models complained to him that they had been harassed by the man mentioned in the story. Mr Harris advised aspiring models to take some sensible precautions to ensure the photographer they chose was above board. This included making sure the photographer had a website featuring easily checkable testimonials, galleries of their work and that they were a registered business. Reputable photographers should also be prepared to give out contact details for some past recent clients upon request. Mr Harris said another safeguard was to take a friend along to the photo shoot.

ASPIRING models don’t need to pose in skimpy swimwear for photos to help them get modelling jobs – and some simple precautions should ensure they get a reputable photographer whose work they will be happy with. That’s the advice from people connected with the modelling and photography industries locally after the story warning of a ‘rogue’ photographer appeared in the February 19 issue of the Independent. The man in question had been harassing females to do photo shoots, using the possibility of modelling contracts as a lure. Vicki Carnes of Victoria’s Modelling Agency and Costume Hire in Port Macquarie contacted the newspaper and said the issue of men posing as photographers and using the lure of a possible modelling contract to get people to disrobe for them had been around for as long as she could remember. She said that in her opinion even if the photographer were above board, such shots were totally unnecessary. “In my 15 years’ experience as a licensed modelling agency, I have never once been asked by a client to supply a photo of a model scantily clad,” Ms Carnes said. Ms Carnes also queried the very need for an extensive portfolio in the first place. “Portfolios need only to be done if a girl
Jessie-Lee – over the moon with her photo shoot at Fab Photos PICTURE: FAB PHOTOS would like to go onto a model website and even then head, head and shoulders, waist up and full length in a variety of garments is all that is needed,” she said. Ms Carnes warned photos could end up anywhere in this age of the internet and models should make sure they have a contract giving them rights over any revealing photographs they did not want widely distributed.
‘Don’t tar us all’ A PROFESSIONAL photographer from the Mid North Coast also contacted the newspaper after the story, asking the Independent in any follow-up to make clear that the issue was just one ‘rogue’ photographer who might not even be a professional. “There are many very good, professional photographers here and people should not be put off by the actions of this one person,” he said, requesting not to be named.
Shaken family urges security check A PORT Macquarie family have warned other home owners to double-check their security following what they believe was an attempted home invasion. The family of six – mother, father, son and daughter and the daughter’s two young children – were asleep about midnight one night last month when they were woken by a banging on the front door. The 73-year-old father went to investigate, followed by his daughter. He looked through the blinds on the main door and couldn’t see anyone, but when his daughter did she saw two people standing back flat against the wall, obviously
trying to stay out of sight. Thinking he still had the screen door locked outside the main door, the father opened the main door, only to find the person outside had cut the screen on the screen door, flipped up the lock and was trying to push the main door open back on top of him. He fought back and managed to shut the door. By this time the whole family were up, and yelling in loud voices that they had called the police. The would-be intruders had decamped by the time police arrived, but two days later the family read there had been a home invasion in Kempsey,
and they wondered if it was the same people. The incident has left the family obviously concerned and they have since spent thousands on Crimsafe screen doors and cameras. However, while they did not want their names or address used, they did want to make the incident public as a warning to other home owners to not take security for granted, and make sure protective screen doors cannot be opened from the outside. “On our screen door we had just flipped the lock shut and not deadlocked it, so when they cut the screen they just reached through and opened it,” the mother said.
in the case, was photographed driving by the point where police were preparing to search on Monday. Mr Spedding was allegedly due to repair a washing machine at William’s grandmother’s house the day the young boy disappeared, and police searched Mr Spedding’s house at Bonny Hills and shop in January. Mr Spedding has repeatedly stated his innocence and police have also reiterated they are following up multiple lines of enquiry.

Foreign ownership THE Federal Nationals have secured a major policy win with the implementation of new reporting measures for foreign ownership in agriculture, local federal MP Dr David Gillespie said. Dr Gillespie said the Abbott-Truss Government had announced better scrutiny and reporting of foreign purchases of agricultural land. The government was also considering recommendations regarding foreign investment in residential real estate. “There does need to be better enforcement of the rules for foreign purchases of existing homes so that young people are not priced out of the market,” he said.

Campers a concern
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council needs to act on the illegal campers at Shelley Beach now. l had a cousin and husband come from England to stay with us at beautiful Port Macquarie and her daughter came from Caloundra in Queensland for a long weekend. We wanted to show them our wonderful beaches and started at Lighthouse then onto Shelly Beach. At Shelly the campers were taking four car spaces for two camper vans. Had all items out from their van - beach chairs, cooking items and washing hanging from their vans. One gentleman was doing his washing up at the shower, which is for swimmers when needed, not for washing up your utensils. l said to the French backpackers that it was not a camping site, and we have facilities for the campers that do visit our beautiful town. His reply, “You have a good day.” My reply,

THE current proposal to allow commercial TV networks to be able to broadcast sex, nudity and swearing from 7.30pm needs to be condemned. The plan is to bring forward by one hour the exposure of children to these aspects of life. It should be resisted because the adverse impact on impressionable children will, despite parental guidance, be greater. Research
Clean up the mess first Campers a concern “Yes l will. When you move from this beautiful beach and into a campsite!” My cousin and her daughter could not believe that is happening and nothing has been done about it. We have to let these backpackers we mean business and all the towns they visit do the same. They will be telling all their friends that visit our beautiful country, all the free stops to take. Not on! Pamela Brennan Port Macquarie confirms that the “normalisation” of violence, in particular, compounds the problems that lead to domestic violence and the potential involvement in a range of anti-social behaviours. The intention to also allow earlier advertisement of alcohol will bring similar issues. Abuse of alcohol and the adverse effects on developing brains are well recognised problems with huge personal and societal costs. The “adult violence” classification that depicts violence in some detail is also planned to be removed.

IN reply to John Tingle’s ‘A much better rant’ (Letters, January 29). The facts are that John Tingle as president of the Resident Action Network endorsed PMH Council’s decision not to seek an exemption from the pegged rate rise for 2015-16. If he wants to comment and the RAN to be relevant, he must accept that council will not be able to keep a rate rise pegged to 2.4 per cent. He should also outline what information he has about council’s intention concerning rates after the 2015-16 financial year. Without this information why would anybody endorse council’s behaviour in the rates area?
He suggests that council does not pursue growth. Council encourages growth by facilitating it with infrastructure and services, which are resulting in already strained and deteriorating infrastructure. Regarding my “ingenuous solution” as mentioned by John Tingle – I suggest he consults a dictionary, where among the explanations he will find “candid”. Making assertions without offering alternatives reminds me of several political parties in the federal sphere. With my genuine suggestion of a moratorium on development, and no alternative from John Tingle, maybe
The existing constraints on the broadcasting of alcohol advertisements, sex, nudity and swearing allow interested adults the opportunity to decide to view these adult issues if we wish. We must protect our rights but also cherish our children and their futures. People with opinions might take the opportunity to express them by contacting our local federal MP. he is ingenuous. Maybe it’s time for everybody to – as one politician said – take a Bex and lie down and consider where the infrastructure of the PMHC should be in five years. I would welcome suggestions form John Tingel’s RAN and others; otherwise, it is the existing ratepayers who will continue to feel the burden. I say, clean up the mess first, before facilitating new development and growth. Does the RAN or John Tingle have a problem with that? John Simon Lake Cathie

Dementia stat on the rise NEW figures show that in the state electorate of Port Macquarie 3500 people will be living with dementia by the year 2050. The updated figures were released by Alzheimer’s Australia, who say the figures underline the need for a comprehensive state-wide dementia strategy to be implemented in NSW across health, transport, policing, housing and other government services. Alzheimer’s Australia NSW CEO John Watkins said updated dementia prevalence rates show that the numbers of people with dementia
in NSW is now estimated to be almost 112,000. This is expected to increase to an estimated 128,500 people by 2020 and up to 272,000 people by 2050. “In the state electorate of Port Macquarie there is an estimated 1730 people living with dementia, which is expected to increase to 1940 by 2020 and 3500 by 2050,” he said. “These figures show dementia is an issue that is only going to get bigger and we really need a whole-of-government approach to appropriately tackle the challenge.
“This means doing things like taking a serious look at how to provide much better care for people with dementia when they need to go to hospital, increasing specialist palliative care for people with dementia and adequately funding health-related transport to support people living with dementia to access health and medical-related appointments. “Dementia is an issue that cannot be ignored and will not go away. It demands effective, comprehensive action by the NSW Government.”

HERE are just some of the many comments that have flooded in since last week’s frontpage story, Residents see red over blowfly issue (Independent, February 26). In that story a long-time resident claimed the change from a weekly to every other week red bin service had resulted in the reappearance of maggots and blowflies after a 50-year absence. However, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council was unaware of any issues, and said there should not be any if residents sorted their organics properly.
Carol Appleton: WE have never had flies, blowflies and maggots like this before. Well, in fact, we have never had maggots in our bin ever until a couple of months ago. Although it’s our green bin that is giving us more grief than the red. We meticulously sort our rubbish, and I believe that it’s the placing of meat and table scraps in the green bin that has caused the issue. Even though this bin is emptied each week you are unable to adequately seal up the scraps by securing in a plastic bag – those green ones they gave us do not cut the mustard. Some would say freeze the scraps until bin day – but how big is your freezer! So, unfortunately, we now seal the scraps up like Fort Knox in very un-environmentally-friendly plastic bags and put in the red bin. Seems to defeat the whole purpose of the new bin system. Katharine Causer: YES, every fortnight just about since the bin collections were cut to every other week. I find maggots breeding in my red bin in dog pooh, which I don’t want to put in the green bin. My neighbour has the same problem with nappies. We never had an issue previously. Sandy Mackenzie: YES, we have a massive problem – flies and maggots. We started using that little countertop organic bin supplied for food scraps, but we ended up with fruit flies in the house, so we have gone back to putting it all together and putting in the red bin. Also the organic bags in the little organic bin are biodegradable and start breaking down immediately, so you have to empty the bin straight away. If you forget it, in the morning it is running with rotting liquid and ants and fruit flies

You would only get flies in your red bin if you are putting your food scraps in instead of the green one
Kevin and Jennifer Brett: WE were interested in reading Ron Mooney’s comments in the Independent (February 26). We agree, however, although the green bins are emptied each week, they are also a breeding ground for blowflies. We try to keep the scraps of organic matter until the last minute before emptying but the flies still manage to lay their eggs, resulting in maggots! Suzanne White: IF we all used our green bins properly, the red bins wouldn’t smell.

YM Toomey: I HAVE not had a problem since the bi-weekly collection has been introduced. So, maybe the reason for the gentleman in the story’s problem is that he is not recycling properly. Most food scraps can be recycled. The council has provided bags for the purpose of recycling food scraps and that is collected weekly. Any wrapping that may have had food in it should be rinsed before depositing it in the red bin - no smell - no flies. Dirty garbage that cannot be recycled in the green bin or in the yellow bin should be wrapped in newspaper before depositing in the red bin.

Sonia Harward: I SOLVED the problem by spraying surface spray inside the lid and around the top of the red bin. Stephanie Crawshaw: I THINK council should hang their heads in shame over this garbage issue. Whatever the cost I think the citizens of the Hastings are entitled to a garbage collection service that is in keeping with good health procedure. Now we not only have the stench of the red bins being only emptied once a fortnight, but also the stench from the green bins which now receive the household scraps. As well as this we have the smell in our kitchens from the little bins with the green bags and the problem of these same green bags disintegrating when being removed to the green bins. All in all, one very unsatisfactory situation. Please let us go back to weekly red bin collection for all of the household refuse . . . at least that way there was only one smelly bin and over one week, which was not too bad. Mariet Ludriks: I SO agree with Mr R Mooney about the stench and blowfly/maggot problems in and around the red bin after two weeks. I went to put my red bin out on Sunday night in the dark. As I grabbed the handle to wheel it to the curb, I heaved as I had also grabbed a handful of squirmy maggots wiggling on the lid. I have flycatchers all over my garden (they work excellent) but really don’t want to be
supplied. Use two bags and put all food scraps (council gives a list for each bin). Place the bags into the green bin for a weekly collection. What could be more simple? What a great idea council. Well done!
Harry Creamer: I AM happy with the changes. The fortnightly collection focuses my mind on getting the best ‘bang for my rates buck’. I try to fill the red or yellow bin as a long-term clear-up and downsizing strategy!
Trish Forrest: I CAN’T understand how people cannot get used to the new bin arrangements. Every week you see people putting out all the bins as not sure which one, so when one person puts out the wrong one others follow. Also you would only get flies in your red bin if you are putting your food scraps in instead of the green one. Come on, Port Macquarie, do the right thing and sort your rubbish - it doesn’t take much.
Norma Priestley: THE flies around our red bin are hardly noticeable. Nothing should be in that bin to attract an explosion of blowflies. Council has made provision for a weekly collection for those who really need one. Use the little bin and green bags
Tareq Rashdan: I READ your article about the red bin collection and I have to agree the smell and flies are all over the place. I hope you keep on putting this issue so maybe the council gets some sense back and go to the same arrangement we used to have.
What are you putting in your red bin? responsible for breeding more.

Give credit where credit due THE infrastructure crisis? Sure, there is a lot to do in Port MacquarieHastings. Undoubtedly. But let’s give credit for what has already been done which critics never seem to do. Council’s infrastructure team complete mountains of work annually, for example, during 2013-14: • 21m upgrade 0f Port Macquarie Airport completed • More than $60,000 of bridge and culvert maintenance carried out • More than 700km of unsealed road graded at a cost of $2.1m • More than $640,000 of maintenance works and stormwater drainage completed • Major reseal and pavement rejuvenation of over 13km of road • Kooloonbung Ck pedestrian bridge completed • Small town’s sewerage schemes completed at Beechwood
• Maintenance programs for parks, reserves and boating infrastructure completed • Lots of upgrades of footpaths, carparks, cycleways and seawalls, playground. And there are many more highlights as listed in council’s annual reporting. But what’s more, the presence of infrastructure that is at, or near the end of its useful life isn’t necessarily a bad thing anyway. Would it make sense for every single car on the road to be brand new? Of course not. Many cars ultimately end
up getting driven till the wheels fall off. And that makes perfect sense. Why would you dispose of an asset that still has lots of service life left? The fact that some issues with infrastructure can cause temporary closure or disruption is exactly how most personal capital assets work. A part goes out on your car. It needs to be towed and fixed. And it is out of commission during that period. That’s annoying, disruptive, and costly. But does it mean that we should all go out and buy a brand-new car? I don’t think so. And that’s certainly not how many of the people I know behave in the real world. Obviously you have to build in a margin of safety on items like bridges where a failure would be catastrophic, but the same general principle applies. We shouldn’t wait for them to fail before replacement, but we do and should get the full useful life out of them. Why would we expect council to spend the budget on its capital assets in a manner differently from how we spend our own money on our
at the Food For Less Short Street car park in Port Macquarie. Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie will be cutting the black ribbon on the event. The local and famous black dog Murphy will be attending the check-in and will be available for photos with bikes, bikers, car enthusiasts and members of the public. Registration is available online now or from 8am on the day. The Lions Club will have a breakfast sausage sizzle and Lifeline Mid Coast will have merchandise commemorating this year’s event and resources on depression and suicide intervention. Riders and drivers will depart from the Short Street car park at 9.30 am and will first go to Laurieton, then have a 20-minute stop at Kew, then onto Wauchope and another 20-minute stop
at Beechwood and back into Port Macquarie for lunch at Hibbard Sports Club. There will be raffles after lunch and from 1pm the band Rock Hard Outlaws of Rock will be playing to round off the day. Everyone is welcome to attend. Organiser Todd Taylor is passionate about the ride. “Suicide is the leading cause of death in Australians under the age of 45 and I’ve experienced depression before,” he said. To join the ride in Port Macquarie please register as soon as possible at blackdogride. com.au For more information please contact Todd Taylor on 0407 806 809 or email ncdoc-todd@ hotmail.com

Hop aboard the Black Dog Ride
MOTORISTS are being invited to join motorbike riders in the Black Dog Ride later this month. Every March thousands of Black Dog Riders hit the highways to raise vital funds for Lifeline, and raise awareness of depression and suicide prevention. The nationwide event last year attracted nearly 5000 riders, raising more than $200,000 for Lifeline. In 2015, motorcycle enthusiasts will depart from 30 locations across Australia on Sunday, March 22, including Port Macquarie. However, this year the organisers of the Black Dog Ride in Port Macquarie are inviting car enthusiasts to join the fun. They would also like to invite the public to cheer on the participants and come and view the bikes and cars and meet their owners from 8am
own personal possessions? It’s to be expected that some percentage of our infrastructure will perpetually be at, or near, end of life, as that’s the nature of the capital asset lifecycle. So there are some things that need to be taken care of and we need to continue to do that. Council and staff have a strong focus on stretching our limited infrastructure budget as far as possible and you will most likely see additional budget being allocated to roads and stormwater for 2015-2016. But scaremongering about dangerous bridges isn’t the right answer. And where I see the biggest infrastructure needs are on local roads, where federal and state dollars are least likely to be applicable. It’s no surprise to me that most of the pothole-ridden roads we drive on are local ones, where they are the maintenance responsibility of an entity (council) that lacks the large, dedicated infrastructure revenue streams available to the state and federal governments.
Black Dog Ride organiser Todd Taylor would love to see hundreds of motorbike riders and car owners join the Port Macquarie ride

BROUGHT TO YOU BY ALL ROUND FINANCIAL SERVICES
How long have you lived in or around Port Macquarie? I have lived in the area from the age of seven, when my family relocated from the Northern Territory to Kundabung. I first moved to Port Macquarie 22 years ago. I have moved out of the area a few times so that I could gain other experiences but I keep coming back, as this is home to me. What made you move to here? I first moved to Port Macquarie straight after my HSC, to complete my Associate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality, at the Port Macquarie TAFE. What do you love most about the Hastings? I believe Port Macquarie and the surrounding areas are some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Whenever I go walking along the beaches or foreshore I always feel very privileged to live amongst such beauty. What do you love most about your work? I have two roles at the moment. As Country Labor candidate for Port Macquarie, what I love is being able to advocate on behalf of others. In my second role as carer for my mother, what I love the most is my mother. Her faith and ability to laugh even in the hardest situations is inspirational. How do you start your day? As slowly as possible. I like to start the day by spending some time getting my thoughts together over a strong coffee. What do you do in your spare time? My favourite pastime is sitting with a friend or friends, sharing a good meal/coffee and having great conversation. Most of my spare time is spent researching various topics such as recipes, crafts, the latest sustainable technologies and politics. How do you like your coffee? Strong, dark roasted and smooth. White, no sugar. What makes your day? I love when I see someone go out of their way to show some kindness to a complete stranger. It always makes me smile and makes me realise that sometimes just a little kind act can totally change someone’s day.
Program for book lovers PORT Macquarie-Hastings Libraries will launch their first ever one-book, one-community program later this month. Book lovers can immerse themselves in the classic thriller novel An Iron Rose, by Peter Temple, with 200 copies of the paperback edition freely available to borrow through Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Laurieton libraries. The one-book concept was developed in Seattle, US in 1998 to build a sense of community while promoting literacy. The purpose of the program is to bring together a community and encourage people to join in the shared experience of reading and discussing the same book. For the Port Macquarie-Hastings inaugural one-book event, An Iron Rose by accomplished crime fiction writer Peter Temple has been chosen by the library for its ability to keep you engaged in the story and its characters. “Life gets busy and the project is about rekindling the forgotten pleasure of reading a good story and sharing it with friends,” council director community and economic growth Tricia Bulic said. “These days many people, despite their best intentions otherwise, do struggle to find the time to read books or don’t read much outside their genre or area of special interest. Some may feel that reading can be a lonely experience – it is anything but.” Apart from being immersed in a story and its characters, this project aims to create a collective literary experience by bringing together people from across the community with a common love
of a good story. The program will culminate in a readers’ celebration and discussion evening on Tuesday, March 24 at 6.30pm at Port Macquarie Library located in Grant Street. All are welcome and entry is free. Simply phone 6581 8755 to RSVP. Copies of the book are freely available for the community to borrow as a paperback, ebook, audio book or as a book club set from all Port Macquarie-Hastings libraries. Residents are encouraged to participate in the program and post comments on the library website http://mnclibrary.org.au/ and leave their library card number, for a chance to receive a book voucher awarded to a lucky reader each week in March.

TWO well-deserved awards were presented at the February meeting of the Port Macquarie branch of the Fellowship of Australian Writers NSW Inc. Gwen Rees-Hopton was presented with an Australian Writer degree from the FAW. Gwen is an inaugural member of the Port Macquarie branch of the FAW and is a prolific writer. Her most recent book was The Stages of a Dream, the story of the Port Macquarie Players Theatre. The second award of the month went to Connie Jones, who was given a life membership of the Port Macquarie branch. Connie is also a talented writer.
An Iron Rose is a classic thriller by Peter Temple - five-time winner of the Ned Kelly Award. Mac Faraday is a man with a past living a quiet life in the country - until his beloved friend Ned Lowey is found hanged. Is it suicide? Faraday won’t accept that and starts to ask questions. Why did Ned visit Kinross Hall, the local home for juvenile girls? Why did he keep press cuttings about the skeleton of a girl found in an old mine shaft? Author Peter Temple has written nine novels, including four books in the Jack Irish series, and has won the Ned Kelly Award for Crime Fiction five times.
That’s where the rub came from WILLIAM Shakespeare played bowls. I know, I know. It’s a bit difficult conjuring up the image of the bard sending down a few, occasionally with the wrong bias no doubt, and then ducking into the clubhouse for a quick ale before he hurried home to Anne. But the history books all seem to say he was a bowler. I don’t think he ever played pennants though. I was asked the other day where the expression “there’s the rub” came from. This is where Shakespeare comes in, because in Richard II, Act 3, Scene 4, he writes: Queen: What sport shall we devise here in this garden to drive away the heavy thought of care? First Lady: Madam, we’ll play at bowls. Queen: ‘Twill make me think the world is full of rubs. And that my fortune runs against the bias. The words “there’s the rub” come in Macbeth when Shakespeare writes: “To die, to sleep - to sleep, perchance to dream. Aye, there’s the rub, for in that sleep of death what dreams may come.” Okay, I know that just because a fellow wrote of terms that were used in bowls, that doesn’t make him a bowler, but some of the people who wrote about Shakespeare said he was a bowler.
my
LAURIE BARBER
One even went so far as to say he played lawn bowls, not lanes (a reference, no doubt, to tenpin bowling). Shakespeare, in my opinion, was suggesting that an obstacle, such as a fault in the green, sent the bowl in another direction (it happens to me all the time). It also appears in the history of golf, but I couldn’t find any reference to Bill ever playing golf. Actually, Shakespeare made many other references to sport in his plays. I don’t have room for them all here, but they include archery, bearbaiting, billiards, blind man’s bluff, falconry, fencing, football, leapfrog (a letter writer to a newspaper I edited a long time ago said, with some indignation, that he had seen a man and a woman leapfrogging on a local beach, but he rang us later to say he had been mistaken), quoits,
tennis and wrestling and a whole host of sports that seems to have died out over the years. He also referred to other practices in bowls. Rub has several meanings and the word takes up a few pages of my big dictionary. In its early days it was spelt as rubbe. In the bowls sense the first use I could find came in 1586. In 1593 Shakespeare wrote about the world being full of rubs and his fortune running against the bias. In 1876 Encyclopedia Britannica wrote that a rub was “when a jack or bowl, in transitu (their term, not mine), comes in contact with any object on the green”. Author Gregory Titelman in the book America’s Popular Sayings said rub meant something that hindered the movement of the ball in the game of bowls. He said the saying “there’s the rub” was first used by Shakespeare in Hamlet’s famous soliloquy. I haven’t been able to ascertain whether Shakespeare won the weekly meat tray at his bowling club, but I’ll keep looking. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Join in the fun at Hibbards THE Hibbard Sports Club has gone from strength to strength since a group of members formed a steering committee to purchase the club from Panthers last November. Secretary-manager Teresa Carney said the response from the Port Macquarie community to the change of ownership had been fantastic. “Everyone just loves the fact that the club is now owned by locals and every cent you spend here is staying here,” Ms Carney said. “We had 650 members by the official first trading day under the new ownership on
Wednesday, November 26 and earlier this week this has doubled to 1206 which is way ahead of what we had hoped.” The club already had three world-class bowling greens, a great bistro and bar – which is renowned for its cold beer - but Ms Carney has also introduced some enticing specials. “Wednesday nights we are having pasta nights, which are proving very popular. If you buy two meals you receive the second one half price and also you receive a free soft drink with each kid’s meal,” Ms Carney said. The Hibbard Sports Club has a great function
area which can cater for up to 80 people with various menus available and the club also offers free hire for meetings of a community nature. Other attractions include bingo on Monday afternoon and Thursday nights and a club raffle on Wednesday night. Men’s bowls is played on Tuesday and Thursday, ladies’ bowls on Wednesday and mixed on Friday and the bowlers also run a raffle on Friday night. The bistro is open seven days a week, with lunch from 12-2pm and dinner from 5-8pm. Other facilities include Keno, a TAB, outdoor
barbecue area, children’s playground and an adjacent hydro golf and putt-putt golf complex. Joining is easy - just fill in a membership form and hand it to one of the staff. The cost is only $5 and membership entitles you to members pricing on food and beverage purchases as well as earning loyalty points. Call in and say g’day and find out how the club is living up to its tag of “the friendly club”. You’ll find them in Boundary Street, Port Macquarie, ph 6584 9276.

Medically assisted dying:
What the pollies say THE Independent asked the three candidates who have announced their candidacy for the seat of Port Macquarie in the upcoming state election on Saturday, March 28 where they stood on the issue of legalising medically assisted dying for the terminally ill with suitable safeguards. Here are their responses: Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams: NO comment. Suggested the Independent ask National Oxley candidate Melinda Pavey because Mrs Williams is not attending the Dying With Dignity forum in Port Macquarie due to a prior commitment. Labor candidate for Port Macquarie Kristy Quill: BEING a carer of someone with a terminal illness the topic of medically assisted dying is a very personal one. From the moment I was asked to be on the Dying with Dignity panel I have struggled to solidify my position on the topic. My core beliefs mean that I cannot support euthanasia, yet due to my personal experience, I have great compassion for others who are have a terminal or incurable illness and those who live each day in unbearable pain, so I find the decision a hard one. I believe that everyone should have access to the highest level of palliative care and painrelief options available. I will fight to make sure that hospital staff and those working with the terminally ill have the resources and the highest training in the most advanced palliative care techniques.

Comment on ‘For mum’s sake’ IN the front-page story, For mum’s sake, Lesley Dunn voiced concern about the fact her mother was transferred from a palliative care unit into a nursing home against her wishes. The Independent gave the Mid North Coast Local Healthy District the opportunity to respond and received the following statement: “The Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) again extends condolences to Ms Dunn on the passing of her mother in 2013,” a spokesperson said. “The concerns raised by Ms Dunn have
been thoroughly investigated and the outcomes discussed with her and responded to in correspondence. “In 2014 the MNCLHD officially opened a purpose-built Palliative Care Unit at Wauchope which has increased the capacity to support patients with life-limiting illnesses. The MNCLHD has full confidence in the staff and processes of care that support the unit. “MNCLHD is unable to provide comment on any concerns raised in regards to aged-care facilities.”
of a state Labor government. Greens candidate for Port Macquarie Drusi Megget THE Greens, like most Australians, believe terminally ill people should have the right to end their lives on their own terms. As people we love face ongoing suffering and pain in the grip of terminal illness, we owe it to them to provide the choice of a dignified, pain-free death. If I were stuck in a bed with no hope of recovery, I would want a choice of a dignified, pain-free death. Doctors have to stay within the law. This limits options. To answer this problem, in federal government in 2014, Senator Dr Richard di Natale proposed a bill which defines a “dying with dignity medical service” to authorise medical practitioners to administer a substance that would assist a terminally ill person to end their life in a humane manner. It also indemnifies doctors from prosecution by the state. Safeguards are built into the bill which requires three independent medical practitioners to agree that medically assisted death is appropriate. As a Greens member and as a human being, I think medically assisted dying is sensible, humane and loving. Dying with Dignity is legislated for in many countries and I support this for Australians.

My House My Home
Why build a granny flat? Regional Development Australia has launched a granny flat promotion in the Hastings, with a host of home-loan providers jumping on board to offer very competitive loans. The RDA says rental yields for a secondary dwelling in this area could be as high as 14.8 per cent. In general, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council also imposes the least charges of any Mid North Coast council for homeowners and investors building a secondary dwelling (under 60sqm). Council charges equate to between 3-5 per cent of the build cost. However, be aware that contributions jump up considerably the moment your granny flat exceeds 60sqm. Affordable housing demand The most obvious demand is being driven by the construction of a new Charles Sturt University campus in the Innes Lake district, close to the Port Macquarie town centre and a short drive from Wauchope. The university has expressed a growing need for more student accommodation. Over the next five years Charles Sturt University will need an additional 600 beds for students moving to the area. This number increases to 900 additional beds over the next 10 years. Social housing There is also a significant demand for social housing in Port Macquarie - Hastings which may present an additional investment opportunity for investors willing to look at “headleasing” through Housing NSW. There is currently a five to 10-year wait on the social housing register for one-bedroom and two-bedroom dwellings in Port
Macquarie, and a 10+ year wait in Laurieton? Who is offering what As of Monday, these were the best loan offerings on housingpromotion.com.au (check with the individual institution regarding establishment fees etc): • Community Mutual: 4.50 per cent • Holiday Coast Credit Union 4.64 per cent • Coastline Credit Union 4.69 per cent • Greater Building Society 4.89 per cent • Suncorp 5.06 per cent • BCU 5.08 per cent • Newcastle Permanent 5.15 per cent Council charges and restrictions Permissible zones (attached dwelling): R1-R5, RU1-6 and (detached dwelling) R1-R5 General fees • 149 Planning certificate - $53 • Notification fee - $144 • Occupation certificate - $120 • Other fees (admin, scanning etc) - $95 Example: One bedroom ($50,000 build) • DA fees ($50,000 build) - $320 • Construction certificate ($50,000 build) - $1150 • Inspections - $605 • Long Service Levy (State) - $175 • Section 64 water contributions $0 • Section 64 sewer contributions $0 • Section 94 contributions $0. Total payable: $2662 Approval complying development three weeks, approval, DA 6-8 weeks.
Solarbright can provide you with the right system for your needs at a great price
Many granny flats are portable, like this old container turned into an attractive granny flat with decking and landscaping Average rent Indicative rental prices for a one-bedroom granny flat in the area are between $150-$215 per week. Let’s take the example above of a simple one-bedroom studio granny flat costing $50,000 to build, with an additional $2662 in council charges. Assuming weekly rent at the lower end of $150 per week, the rental yield would be 14.8 per cent. Compare this to the rental yield for a median rental property in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area based on the most recent ABS Census figures (2011), the yield is 3.3 per cent. My House My Home
Here comes the sun Bringing an aged beauty back to life
RESURFACING is not restricted to updating old, tired-looking bathrooms and kitchens. Old pieces of furniture that have sentimental value can also benefit from resurfacing. You can’t re purchase memories or the attachment that these pieces hold yet many sentimental pieces don’t fit with today’s décor or become impractical to use in your home. Given you can’t bring yourself to throw them out, they are stored away never to be seen again. By resurfacing you can bring these back into your everyday living and enjoy the sentiments and memories they hold - the whole reason you have kept it over the years. A classic example of this is the traditional cast-iron, claw-foot bathtub. These aged beauties can become tired and worn over the
years and I’ve even seen some being used as livestock feeding or water tanks. Resurfacing these timeless aged beauties will bring them back to the centrepiece of any bathroom, especially if you’re fortunate to have a matching pedestal basin. The transformation can be done over just a few days to bring these pieces back to their former glory. So if you have a piece of furniture that you want brought back into your life, consider resurfacing to bring back the memories and sentiments into your home. For more information visit northhcoastresurfacing.com.au or contact Craig from North Coast Resurfacing on 0430 649 124.

THE Flickerfest short-film festival is returning for the third year with a smorgasbord of short films at the Glasshouse on Sunday, March 15. Flickerfest will screen an entertaining, inspiring and award-winning programme that features some of the best Australian shorts, giving local Flickerfest audiences the first look at the hottest short films from around the country. Highlights this year include the witty Bush Mechanics, which tells the story of four young Warlpiri men on a journey to visit a powerful elder living at a remote outstation. As they drive across the red dirt roads of the central Australian desert they must overcome mechanical mishaps and the trickery of a mischievous Munga Munga spirit. It’s hard to go past the hilarious Florence Has Left the Building which takes place during the annual Christmas Eve concert at the Marigold House assisted-living facility. All her friends are dying and Florence wants out. When the facility double books two rival Elvis impersonators, Florence takes the opportunity for one last hurrah. It stars a very unrecognisable Jacki Weaver. Nor can one forget the moving and insightful Grey Bull, about Martin, a South Sudanese refugee who happens upon a bull which he believes is his spiritual totem. Deciding to rescue it from the abattoir he works in, Martin is torn between his ancient cultural identity and his family’s new life in Australia. A locally made short film from ABC Open will screen alongside the main program, Ken Spink’s Creating a Team. Flickerfest screens at 2pm. Sessions are approx 110 mins and under 15 years have to be with an adult. Tickets cost $35 and are available from the Glasshouse, glasshouse.org.au or or ph 6581 8888.

ENTERTAINMENT Weekly
Elvis right to the Max THOSE who love Elvis Presley and his music will be in for a special treat on Thursday, March 19. One of the world’s first and most successful Elvis impersonators, Max Pellicano, will be bringing his famous Elvis to the Max show to the Glasshouse. Fans who have seen it say it’s about as close as you can get to “The King in Concert” this side of heaven. Max’s uncanny resemblance and equally chilling performance have mesmerised Australians over the last two decades. It has been said by media worldwide that the Max Pellicano’s tribute to Elvis goes beyond mere impersonation. Max has been a professional actor and entertainer since 1974 when he graduated from
Elvis or Max? You’d be hard put to tell the difference, but this is in fact Max Pellicano
the California State University with a degree in Dramatic Arts. He first brought Elvis (as an actor) to life on stage in a production of Bye Bye Birdie. “I was doing musicals and theatre and had to study Jailhouse Rock for my role as the Elvistype character, Conrad Birdie,” he said. “I studied the way he walked, the way he talked and the way he moved for months. I guess you could say I got into impersonating Elvis in a kind of round-about way.” His performance led to an Elvis tribute show and the rest is history. “I learnt long ago that the fans don’t want the legend to die. They want to keep the memory going,” Max said. He stresses he is an actor recreating a character and it is an illusion. Some see it differently though – and he does get strange requests from time to time, including one in Los Angeles. “A couple stopped me on the street and wanted me to go to church with them to be their child’s godfather,” he said. “I didn’t know them and I asked if they really wanted me to do it and they said yes! They even wanted me to wear an Elvis costume.” Max says his current Elvis to the Max show is based on the biggest concerts Elvis ever did, so includes many of his best-known hit songs, but also a few the audience will not be so familiar with. “Elvis released so many songs – 429 in all – that there are plenty to choose from,” Max said. Naming a personal favourite is a bit like choosing between your children, but if he had to opt for just one it would be Burning Love. “I never get tired of singing it,” he said. Tickets for Elvis to the Max at the Glasshouse on Thursday, March 19 cost $59 each. To book call in at the box office, visit glasshouse.org.au or ph 6581 8888.

Let the games begin NRL WRAP CASEY O’CONNOR THE countdown to the NRL season has been full of anticipation, excitement and drama but the wait is almost over. Tipsters are nervously asking if they are ready to take on the challenge of another season. Fans, players, coaches and officials are all unsure how these opening rounds will pan out. From the kick off at Suncorp tonight until the first weekend in October many of us will be consumed by the greatest game of all. Let the fun begin. The Broncos and Premiers, the Bunnies go head to head tonight after both tasted recent success in the UK. The Bunnies have picked up where they left off in 2014. Already they have the Auckland Nines and World Club Challenge trophies in the cabinet. No Sam Burgess, Ben Teo and John Sutton this season – no worries. Glenn Stewart joins the line up along with several new faces. Inglis has been handed the captaincy and is setting a great example; already eyeing off premiership 2015. The Wayne Bennett influence has been immediately noticeable at Red Hill. Busy off season recruitment sees a very different playing roster in 2015. Look for a big performance in the opener from Adam Blair and Ben Hunt. They are relishing the opportunity to work with Lockyer and Langer who are playing a big role at the club this season.
The Broncos pre-season form includes that tough and then bizarre extra time win over Wigan. Positive signs for the Broncos faithful. Bennett surprised many announcing Justin Hodges as Captain – the first of what will no doubt be many surprises as the season unfolds. This should be a great season opener - expect bold moves from the wily Bennett. Friday night footy returns with the Eels taking on the Sea Eagles. The Eels are a team on the move. Losing J Hayne was a blow but forces others to take more responsibility. Parra’s new signings include Anthony Watmough, Beau Champion and UK players. Impressive signs in recent trial games and Parra are sure to make their presence felt this season. The Sea Eagles have wallpapered over the cracks in the past couple of seasons but the board room struggles are beginning to have a major impact on the field. Ongoing drama in the playing group is not good. They have lost their share of players but still have Foran and DCE for this season. Off to Hunter Stadium for the first Saturday game of the season. In spite of a horror year the Knights won their fair share of games at the back end of 2014. Free from ownership dramas and with a new coach; new attitude and some important signings fans will be expecting a good start. Capable of beating anyone if they are on their game. The Warriors - awesome one day, horrendous the next - drive tipsters, fans, coaches, selectors and opponents insane. Have the talent to beat any team but often prefer to beat themselves. Don’t have a good away record but wins never surprise. The Tigers would be happy to meet the Titans in this game but should beware. Big crowd expected and the Titans have plenty to prove. There have been

so many changes players may need name badges to identify each other. Tigers are the brash new kids on the block – everyone is expecting big things from this young group under their new coach. The young Tigers should challenge the top teams. They are overdue for an injury free season. Out of adversity often comes strength. Look for a bold showing here from the coast. The Cowboys are a serious football team. They have a great record at home but need to improve their away record to win the premiership. Made some strong acquisitions in the off season and will be boosted by the re-signing of Jason Taumalolo. The Roosters were minor premiers in 2014 but were missing the hunger they showed in their premiership year. Blake Ferguson has been impressive in trial games and will be a real asset. Great playing roster. Another good season beckons but the Cowboys should be smiling in Townsville. The Panthers surprised everyone in 2014. They were still handy when the whips were cracking despite injuries to key players. Teams and tipsters should be wary of the Mountain Men in 2015. Penrith have an almost unchanged roster combining youth and experience. We will see some exciting youngsters make the transition to first grade this season. The Dogs are sure to be snapping at the heels of the top teams. They have a strong forward pack and have recruited well in the off season. Brett Morris joins his twin brother at the club after the Dogs lured him from the Dragons Den. They will be led by Englishman James Graham who returns as captain. With new signings and the Blues halves combination they look contenders. Might be the game of the round.

Sailors in for long haul Brad Fittler with nine-year-old Emily Bermingham
Kids have ball with legends
SOME of rugby league’s biggest names visited sick children at Port Macquarie Base Hospital (PMBH) last Friday while helping a friend present $10,000 to the hospital’s Paediatric Unit. Brad Fittler, Nathan Hindmarsh, Matt Cooper, Steve Menzies, Josh Perry and Ian Schubert are taking part in the 2015 Hogs for the Homeless Charity Ride, a fundraiser for Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets. The former Test, State of Origin and NRL players took time out from their busy 3200km Harley-Davidson motorcycle ride to talk to some of PMBH’s youngest patients. The visit is the third in as many years organised by Blake Cannavo, the managing director of Port Macquarie’s Bamford Engineering and Consulting and head of the Australasian arm of cyber-security business Iboss. While the NRL stars always produce big smiles in the Paediatric Unit, it’s Blake and Belinda Cannavo’s generosity that continues to help sick children, nurse unit manager Cheryl Nolte said. “The Cannavos are wonderful supporters,” Mrs Nolte said. “In three years they have donated $25,000 – a gift that helps us continue to provide first-class care to our young patients.”
THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s Harold Dick Memorial Marathon was sailed in a strengthening north-easter with a surprisingly strong run-out tide, still seemingly boosted by the recent rains. This meant that the bottom buoy that is normally set off the Town Green in a marathon was set up near the jet-ski area so if anyone had problems, they wouldn’t be washed out to sea. The catamarans took off quickly in the northeaster that had filled in on the bottom end of the course near the coast, but on the run up river, they caught the end of the breeze at the Hibbard
ferry, and then had the frustration of the rest of the fleet catching them as they came up river with the filling breeze. Once they got past the Maria river, the wind filled in up to the bridge, so the cats once again took off from the fleet. Frank O’Rourke on Dino was first home, followed by Tony Kuhn on Stella and Dave Winter on Spica. The monohulls had a more consistent run as their slower pace at the bottom end of the river meant that the wind had filled in more as they ran up river. Tony Walker on Deep Purple had a great sail to take the yardstick win, ahead of
Simon, Elsa, and Dale Gandy on Voyager, Stuart Symonsand and Monica Hales on Big Bang, and Ron Apps on his trimaran Kimbo 3, which the handicapper had decided to run with the monohulls. Gabby Carrol and Jeanette Parkes on Britannia were having a good sail, but a wild gybe and a capsize on the town buoy brought their run to a halt when Jeanette learnt the hard way why it is called a boom. Next Sunday is race 8 of the summer series starting at 2pm. Rob Barwick is rostered on duty. There is also a club meeting at midday.
Successful Port swimmers, from left, Dane Perry, Ambrose Kranitis, Caitlin Dewbery, Riley Dures, Toni Hurkett, Ashlyn Dures and Sam Harris
