Wauchope revved By BARBARA DYER

WAUCHOPE will welcome hundreds of riders and local families among an expected crowd of 2000 on Saturday to celebrate the one year anniversary of the town being declared the first motorcycle friendly town in NSW. Google ‘Oxley Highway’ and it becomes clear why this stretch of bitumen from Port Macquarie, through Wauchope, and winding up and down hills to the little town of Nevertire 650kms to the west, is a must do for motorcyclists. Described as one of the world’s best motorcycle roads, with more than 300 corners, minimal traffic and plenty to see, it comes as no surprise then that the people and businesses of Wauchope were keen to welcome riders at the eastern gateway to this legendary road. A year ago it was made official, with the Wauchope Chamber of Commerce and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council encouraging businesses and locals to get on board and support the Motorcycle Friendly Town initiative. And their efforts are paying off, ensuring riders don’t just hum through the town, but stop a while to enjoy the hospitality tailored just for them. Motorcycles kits are in place at two servos, two coffee shops, a motel and Long Flat general store. There are racks to hang jackets, gloves and helmets, places for charging mobile phones, kits containing visor wash and chain lube and secure places to park at motels. • Continued Page 10

Cottages still heart of SWR It’s interesting to know that our arts “ and crafts are going all over the world to places like England, Spain and America. We also have lots of return visitors who come here every year for their holidays.

By SUE PATERICK PART of the landscape since 1902, the Pilot House and Boatman’s Cottages at South West Rocks (SWR) are as important to the local community as ever. As far back as 1893, ships plying Australia’s east coast and the Macleay River needed a pilot and four boatmen to help them navigate across the bar that led from river to the sea at the fledging settlement of SWR. In those days the river mouth was at Grassy Head where the pilot and four boatmen were based. A catastrophic flood in June 1893 saw the mighty Macleay River carve out a new entrance to Trial Bay so the pilot station needed to be relocated. The site was selected in 1899 and by May 1902 the new pilot station was built and ready for occupation. Five cottages, a signal house and a flagstaff, two boatsheds and a footbridge over Back Creek were part of the new development. Surrounded by stunning sandy beaches, blue sea and humpback green hills, the cottages were used as accommodation for the pilot, boatmen and their families. The NSW Maritime Services Board provided pilot services for shipping at the site until 1991, although the boatmen became progressively redundant in the 1950s. After a downtown of shipping on the NSW coast in the 1960s, the present Arts and Crafts Centre in one of the Boatman’s Cottages was rented out to Maritime Services’ employees as holiday accommodation. The cottages were restored and handed over to the Lands Department. They are managed by the SWR Maritime Precinct, another group of dedicated volunteers. Christine Crump is a long-time volunteer at the SWR Boatman’s Cottage Arts and Craft Centre and remembers holidaying at the cottage 36 years ago with her husband Allan, then an employee with the Maritime Services. “I liked everything about staying here,” she said. “It was great because we had little children and could go to the shops, Horseshoe Bay and Back Creek.” Allan and Christine still volunteer at the Arts and Craft Centre, now a scene of festive cheer in the lead up to Christmas. The historic cottage is a cute building with

a stunning view and is full of all manner of arts and crafts. Locals and visitors alike enjoy wandering the quaint rooms bursting with colourful handmade goodies like handbags, baby and children’s wear, knitting, crochet and embroidery, quilting and patchwork, paintings and folk art, silk scarves, woodwork and toys, jams and pickles, leatherwork, jewellery and candles. From reading the Visitors’ Book it is clear everyone loves the Boatman’s Cottage Arts and Craft Centre. Visitors from Australia and overseas wrote it had ‘beautiful things’, was a ‘great little shop’, had ‘great art works’, ‘beautiful talent’ and it was ‘good to see these crafts still alive’. The Arts and Craft Centre has 28 volunteers from throughout the Kempsey Shire who all get to display and sell their creative inspirations. Emily Meikle is a volunteer and sells tea light candles, tie-dyed baby clothes, 3-D printed objects and Christmas presents for pets. She loves the comradery, the people she works with and the satisfaction of creating something and putting it out there for others to admire. “Everyone is very encouraging about each other’s work,” she said. “And being new to the area it was a great way to reach out to people and make friends.” Margaret Smith has been volunteering at the centre for 20 years and also loves it. “It’s just the people you work with have become friends now,” she said. “It’s nice to see each other’s crafts and it’s interesting to talk to customers from all over Australia and the world.” Like Margaret, Christine finds her work fascinating too. “It’s interesting to know that our arts and crafts are going all over the world to places like England, Spain and America,” she said. “We also have lots of return visitors who come here every year for their holidays.” The centre’s volunteers have created a wonderful Christmas Cave this year featuring lots of inspirational gift ideas. The SWR Boatman’s Cottage Arts and Craft Centre is open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm. It is located at 5 Ocean Avenue next the Visitor Information Centre, which is in another of the Boatman’s Cottages.

Above: Volunteers and artists from the SWR Boatman’s Cottage Arts and Craft Centre, Margaret Smith, Jenny Smith, Susan Francis, Emily Meikle and Christine Crump have helped decorate and stock the Christmas Cave full of great gift ideas in the lead up to this year’s festive season. Stop compulsory flu shots ONCE again, the powers that be are trying to strip us of our rights and freedom of choice as individuals. They tell us what we can and can’t put into our bodies, and now want to dictate that the flu shot should be made compulsory. You have only got to look at people over the years - young and old - who do have the injection to see they still get very sick, and pass it on. The medical profession even admit the flu shot may not cover the strains that are out any particular year. They also use the excuses that people had the shot too late, or it was a ‘bad batch’ etc. They have got away with compulsory fluoride in our water, but at least people have the option if they do not wish to drink it. The can get water systems and filters to keep it out of their bodies. With the flu shot, you have NO CHOICE. Past examples show the flu shot will not eradicate the flu strains, even if the whole population had it. It’s time we put a stop to this, let the Government know now your objections before

it’s too late. Say ‘no’ to compulsory flu shots. Robyn Davidson Port Macquarie

ALP will ban plastic bags

WITH the Victorian Government becoming the latest state to move to ban single-use plastic bags, it is very disappointing that the NSW Liberal/ National Government is now the lone state in Australia still refusing to address this type of plastic pollution. Plastic contributes to 70 per cent of the pollution in our oceans, our rivers and on our beaches. Millions of seabirds and hundreds of thousands of turtles, dolphins, seals and other sea mammals die every year as a result of ingesting plastic. If Labor is elected in 2019, we will take action to free our rivers, oceans, beaches, parks and wildlife from the pollution caused by plastic bags. Penny Sharpe MLC Shadow Minister for the Environment

Lake Cathie site a waste of money SO REFRESHING to see how much Sue East has put into getting the truth about the Skate Park in Lake Cathie. She’s really done her homework on this. In a year or two’s time all the parents who now want it at the Foreshore will realise their kids will be much more interested in the opposite sex, and skateboards will be a thing of the past.

It will be much more sensible to locate it in the area of younger families and smaller kids, and in the new development area nearer the school. The Foreshore, as Council realise, is getting smaller day by day with erosion issues, so it would be a waste of public rates money to spend thousands on a Skate Park. Name supplied.

The evidence of health benefits versus the health risks are phenomenal, unfortunately, phenomenally in favour of the health risks! The evidence has been collated by comparing the long-term effects of people in countries with fluoridated water against those countries who don’t fluoridate e.g. Ireland, half of the country is fluoridated, and the other half isn’t. The results speak for themselves. Countries with fluoridated water have significantly increased cases of cancer, Alzheimer’s, Osteo-arthritis and birth defects just to name a few. Fluoride is deadly! I haven’t got the space or the time to go into all the detail however, all the information is there, you just have to read it. I urge each and every one of you to take some time to find out as much information as you can, asap! Get in touch with Paul Jones from CAF – he has heaps of information – as an informed community we can pull together and make a change. Mayor Peta Pinson and Cr Lisa Intemann were in attendance, neither of them believe our water should be fluoridated, and both urged all and sundry to educate themselves and voice their concerns to council and councillors, so the issue can be tabled again - there are two petitions to be signed to get this show on the road. In the meantime, I think PMHC should stop adding fluoride to our water immediately, until the community has spoken. If there is $1.78 million to be refunded to NSW DOH, so be it! What price do you put on the right to live a healthy life? I believe it could possibly be the best money the PMHC has ever spent! To get involved contact CAF President, Paul Jones on 6582 7836 or you can pick up or sign the petition at YLI Office, 3/60 Lord Street, PMQ.

AS part of the recent paving upgrade at a local club they have installed boom gates at the entrance to the members’ carpark. It turns out that when they start operating this area will not be for the general membership but only for 3, 4 or 5 Star Members. How do you get to be one of these? By spending more money in the club?

TO Matty Roberts from Onshore Home Maintenance for all your professional service. You do a splendid job. Thank you.

Thumbs Down TO all the parties, over the ‘secret deal’ for the Plaza Car Park. No wonder they were in a hurry to demolish the Fisherman’s Co-Op.

THERE’S something in the water - literally! Last Thursday evening I attended the Citizen’s Against Fluoridation Inc (CAF) forum held at Westport Club, and listened to Victorian environmental chemist and guest speaker Dr Geoff Pain share his knowledge on the long-term effects of water fluoridation. Frightening! Congratulations first to CAF president, Paul Jones who organised and hosted the forum. What a great turnout and well-run event! Well done! Your Local Independent has had a long association with CAF, having published numerous stories prior to and since the commencement of PMHC water being fluoridated in 2012. Let’s just say I thought I had a reasonable understanding of the whole situation. Couldn’t be further from the truth! Basically, the guts of the matter in plain English - the NSW Department of Health directed that water could be fluoridated, should a council refer the question of water fluoridation to the NSW DOH. Since 1980 water fluoridation has been part of community discussions, in 1991 a community poll was held at the same time as PMHC elections with 20,533 voting ‘NO’ to fluoridation and 8,198 voting ‘YES’. Fast forward a decade, after much deliberation and to-ing and fro-ing in May, 2010, the NSW DOH and PMHC signed a $1.78 million funding agreement to construct a ‘water fluoridation dosing plant’ and this stuff has been slowly drip-fed to you since 2012. Not only is it being drip-fed to you, the dose being fed is more than the amount that is considered ‘safe’ but, if we choose to turn off the fluoridation within 15 years we must refund the money. Similar to asbestos, fluoride can also occur naturally, is used in loads of everyday products and is known to be TOXIC! Whatever the case may be, water fluoridation is toxic, and we should not be forced to take any part in this for any longer! Why?

Palliative care survey opens

Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor Peta Pinson with some of the local students who took part in this year’s Youth Frontiers Program

A short-cut to success By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

AN initiative that has given local students a short-cut to a more fulfilled life is guaranteed for the short term. The NSW government has recently confirmed that the Youth Frontiers Program will be funded for another three years. The program connects over 1,200 students from across NSW with ‘mentors’ for a sixmonth period, building on leadership skills, encouraging positive choices, self-esteem, supporting academic achievement, and encouraging involvement with the community. Students, parents, teachers, and the community have been blown away with the affect the program has had on these students’ lives and just how important it is to have a mentor at every stage of life. Students who participated in the most recent program worked on different community

projects that increased awareness around autism, empowering young women, educating young people about the environment and conservation in the local area, animal welfare awareness, youth mental health education, and other creative initiatives like crochet skills classes and accessible dance classes. A showcase event was held recently to celebrate the achievements of the local students who participated in the program. Students presented their projects and shared their journey on the Youth Frontiers Program. Many spoke of experiencing increased confidence, leadership and life skills. “I was totally inspired and energised by the young participants that I met today,” said Mayor Pinson, who attended the showcase event. “What an important program and more so, the importance of mentoring our youth must not ever be underestimated”. A vital part of the program is the mentors who come from diverse backgrounds and are

carefully screened. They can be found all over NSW from the ages of 18 through to 80 with the main goal to bring life experience to young students and the desire to want to support them to reach their potential.” Mid Coast Communities has delivered the Youth Frontiers program within Mid North Coast electorates this year, on behalf of the YWCA NSW. Mid Coast Communities congratulated all students who have completed the program and who have inspired the community with new ideas and projects. Mid Coast Communities also thanked Wauchope High School and St Columba Anglican School, all the mentors and other community stakeholders who have supported the students throughout the program. For more information visit https://www. youthfrontiers.com.au/

THE NSW community is being asked to participate in a palliative care survey to ensure everyone receives the support and services they deserve at the end of life. Minister for Health Brad Hazzard and Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Rural Health Leslie Williams have also released a consultation paper based on feedback from community roundtables held across NSW earlier this year. Mr Hazzard said providing quality palliative care services to every resident of NSW is a key priority for the NSW Government. “We are investing an extra $100 million over the next four years to provide more tailored, community-based palliative care services, on top of the approximately $210 million already spent each year,” Mr Hazzard said. “We are listening carefully to the community’s views on where and how palliative care services can be improved so that we have a strong plan for the future.” Mrs Williams said the consultation paper and feedback from the survey will inform a new palliative and end-of-life care policy in NSW. “Getting the public’s feedback on palliative care priorities is vital if we are to produce better outcomes for everyone when the inevitable occurs,” Mrs Williams said. “The survey will only take about 10 minutes so I strongly urge everyone to take this opportunity to have their say.” The NSW Health Palliative Care Roundtables Consultation Paper and survey can be viewed at www.health.nsw.gov.au/ palliativecare http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/palliativecare/ Pages/Palliative-care-consultation-paper-andsurvey.aspx

Cause worth sweating for

Ian Robinson at Serpentine Chalet

By SUE PATERICK TWO groups of 17 people pitted themselves against the heat and extreme conditions of the Northern Territory’s Larapinta Trial earlier this year to raise funds and awareness of domestic violence. The 223-kilometre Larapinta Trial in the purple, gold and ochre hills of the West MacDonnell Ranges is one of Australia’s most spectacular bushwalking and trekking experiences. Although a relatively new trail, it is fast becoming world renowned. The White Ribbon Foundation invited Ian Robinson from Kempsey Family Support Service to take part in a five-day trek, which was held in September this year. Ian is a White Ribbon ambassador because of his work as a Men in Families/ Men’s Domestic Violence Behaviour Change Program Group Work Facilitator. While he lives in Coffs Harbour, Ian also works in Kempsey with men who have children up to the age of 12 years and he works around various issues. His job also sees him facilitate 12-week programs with men who wish to change their behaviour and take responsibility for the abuse and violence they have used in their relationships. Ian had never been to Australia’s red centre before and felt proud both groups of trekkers collectively raised $217,000. The money will go to Northern Territory schools for early intervention and primary prevention programs that teach young boys all about respectful relationships. He said a lot of businesses in Coffs

Above: A happy Ian Robinson from Kempsey Family Support Service with his trek buddies at Glen Helen Gorge. Below: Ian’s group somewhere between Old Telegraph Station and Simpsons Gap on the Larapinta Trial in the Northern Territory.

Harbour donated to the cause which helped spread awareness of the prevention of domestic violence. Ian will also be raising awareness in Kempsey later this month during a talk about the White Ribbon Foundation with Kempsey High School students. It is the seventh year Ian has spoken at the high school as part White Ribbon Day and the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women and Girls campaign. The campaign begins on White Ribbon Day on November 25. Part of Ian’s talk will involve getting the students, both male and female, to swear an oath - I will stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women. This year he will also relive the highs and lows of his trek through the outstanding Larapinta Trial. While some hardy trekkers camped along the trail itself, Ian and his intrepid group returned each night to the relative comfort of the rustic Glenn Helen Resort.

They stayed in semi-permanent tents and after an arduous day’s trekking, he looked forward to a cool shower, a few cold drinks, good company and food. The resort is a 45-minute drive from Alice Springs. Ian said it was like an old pub and there was nothing there but red dust. Early each day Ian set out with his companions and a trek guide to explore different sections of the Larapinta Trail, which has a difficulty grading of medium. They trekked for 23 kilometres a day in temperatures in the high 30s. “It was very intense and very hard,” Ian said. “I thought they would have to carry me out in a wheelchair!” For Ian the trek’s highlights were getting back to the pub and cooling off in a swimming hole in a section of the Finke River at Glen Helen Gorge. The Finke River is rumoured to be one of the world’s oldest rivers. “It was so hot and to just float in that cool water with massive cliffs on either side was

amazing,” he said. The stunning landscape of the surrounding Finke Gorge National Park and Palm Valley inspired the magnificent paintings of artist Albert Namatijira. It is home to the Western Arrernte people. Ian’s hardest trek was climbing Mount Sonder, 1380 metres above sea level. They left camp at 2am in the morning to be on the summit for sunrise with just headlamps to see by. When they came back down the mountain in daylight and saw what the sheer drops they had walked past, Ian and his group were shocked. He thought, “What was I thinking?” According to the guide, that reaction was one of the reasons the trek started in the dark because if everyone saw what it was like beforehand they wouldn’t go up. “I had blisters like I’ve never had before and I hurt a tendon in my leg,” Ian said. “Nothing can prepare you for those sorts of conditions, the unevenness of the trails, the inclines and declines and the heat, which all required digging deep to get through each section.” He kept saying to himself that he was doing this self-imposed torture for a very worthy cause. Injuries aside, Ian was glad he did the trek because of the friendships he made and the awareness and money they raised. “It was a really humbling to walk with women who had been incredibly impacted by men’s violence,” Ian said. “To see the resilience of these women was just inspirational.”

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson Welcome to week 3 of my column in Your Local Independent. The feedback I’ve been receiving is extremely encouraging and I’m hoping to hear more and more on how I, as Mayor, and Councillors can represent you on the matters that are important in our community. This week I’d like to share my thoughts around the future of the Plaza carpark and old Food for Less building sites in Port Macquarie. There is some speculation around that Council has entered into some sort of deal with developers and the State Government around the future of these important spaces on our precious foreshore. I can assure readers that there are no secret deals or behind-the-scenes discussions

occurring, and Council’s primary desire is to see great outcomes, that are in alignment with community expectations. At a recent Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce meeting presentation, developer Jan Lindrum outlined a potential vision for the foreshore that included a hotel and related infrastructure, and whilst this has prompted significant discussion this is clearly just one opinion with no basis or plan behind it. A Development Application (DA) has been lodged by Woolworths for the demolition of the old Food for Less building, and should this DA be approved, it will then be up to Woolworths to undertake the demolition and ensure the site is safe. At this stage the future of the site is unknown.

pmhc.nsw.gov.au The adjacent Plaza carpark is Crown Land, and owned by the NSW Government. Council are the trustees of this land meaning that we are responsible for the dayto-day management and upkeep. Once again, the future of this site is unknown. As your representative in the community, I will be ensuring that I work extremely hard on your behalf to ensure that any discussions or planning for these important foreshore sites happens in a transparent way, and in partnership with our community. We all want the best outcomes for our valuable foreshore, and I look forward to keeping you all in the loop. Until next week, Peta

Emoji delivers Blake’s dream By BARBARA DYER

Blake Donnelly has plenty to smile about after a trip to see The Emoji Movie at Majestic Cinemas in Port Macquarie last month

KEMPSEY man Blake Donnelly long dreamed of overseas travel. But he never dreamed his first overseas trip would be to Tokyo, after Blake won the major prize worth more than $13,000, through a competition he entered at Majestic Cinemas in Port Macquarie. Now, thanks to Independent Cinemas Australia (My Cinema) and The Emoji Movie, the 31-year-old will visit the home of emoji and all things technology. Blake says much of his win is thanks to his mum Julie, who left him filling in an entry form while she was at the snack bar, during a trip to see The Emoji Movie at Majestic last month. “While Mum was getting refreshments, I filled out the form but then just forgot about it,” said Blake, still excited after hearing the news last week. “It was a great movie, and I love technology, but I never thought I would win.” When the phone call came, Blake was at his pop’s house and assumed the phone call would be for his grandfather. “But it was for me, and they said they had some good news for me,” recalls Blake. “They said I had won the major prize. I thought they were kidding.”

It was a great movie, and I love “technology, but I never thought I would win

It was no joke and Blake has won his dream trip which includes return economy flights from Sydney to Tokyo, airport and hotel transfers to Tokyo, five nights luxury hotel accommodation in Tokyo, entry to the Sony Museum, a pass to Disneyland Tokyo, entry to the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan), $1000 spending money and travel insurance. “Mum wants to come; I would love to take my whole family,” said Blake. But for those who can’t make it, Blake will have a new mobile and will be taking photos of his trip and no doubt including plenty of ‘wow’ and ‘smiling’ emojis. It will be his first sight of the city known for mixing the ultra-modern and the traditional. Blake received his prize and congratulations from the team at Independent Cinemas Australia (My Cinema), Majestic Cinemas and Sony Pictures at a ceremony on Tuesday. Blake said he had a year to take the prize which needed to be arranged within a couple of months, adding he was getting busy sorting out a passport. “I am going to love the trips to Disneyland and the tech museum. I just love all things to do with animation,” he said. He might have waited 31 years for the trip of a lifetime, but Blake says the prize, valued at $13,170, was well worth waiting for.

Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.

Join us for opening of new Centre THIS Saturday (November 18) will mark the beginning of an exciting new energy happening in Albert Circuit, behind the community college’s headquarters in Hastings River Drive. You are invited to our day of festivities for the grand opening of the new MakerSpace Centre at No. 4 Albert Circuit from 8am to 2pm. There will be a massive garage sale, and hands-on working bee projects to help create a community space for practical workshopping and creative arts. It’s all designed to stimulate young people and adult learners to try out hands-on, practical learning projects, which may even lead to new social enterprises. We are keen to invite donations of goods and equipment, and to meet volunteers with an interest in sharing in making this space ring with new activity. If you have any sewing machines and equipment, arts and craft supplies, and building materials, we welcome all donations. There will be a free BBQ lunch for helpers at the working bee, so if you have some spare time please come and join in the fun. The programs at the MakerSpace aim to offer young and old easy ways to join in learning experiences including building and maintenance, landscaping, small engine and bicycle repair, textiles and design, and all sorts of creative arts. If you have time to volunteer on Saturday, or afterwards for a few hours a week, please come and see us on Saturday and sign up. Or else call the college on 6853 7288 and check out our webpage at www. portace.com.au

IN 1980 the NSW Education Department produced a book called Sydney and the Bush. It was a hard-cover book selling for $4.50, unless you wanted it posted and then it would cost $6. On page 232 it had a photo of Harold Wyndham, who was the director general of education – that’s how old it is. But I remember thinking “the bush” seemed a put down of all things away from Sydney But I did think of “the bush” when I read in a Sydney newspaper a headline that referred to the bush in unflattering terms, indicating that if you did not live in Sydney then you have not lived. The headline produced at least one letter castigating the newspaper for implying that people should all live in Sydney. The letter asked: What of the people who live in country towns? I lived in Sydney for three months and I couldn’t get out of the place fast enough. Anyway, my Australian National Dictionary says bush comes “frequently with the”. It has several pages of bush’s definitions and one of its definitions is “the country as opposed to the town, rural as opposed to urban life”. Then it had “people lacking in urban sophistication”. I was looking for bush week. The only example I found in several pages of small type

AS Australia’s population continues to age, it is certain that aged care policy is going to play an important part in ensuring senior Australians can enjoy their later years. That’s why I recently invited the Minister for Aged Care, Ken Wyatt, to the Mid North Coast for two Aged Care Forums. I hosted two forums, one at the South West Rocks Country Club in South West Rocks, and another at the Westport Club in Port Macquarie. The response from the community was massive. On the day nearly 500 seniors attended the forums to speak with the Minister and share their views on Australia’s aged care sector. Many issues were raised across both forums but what was clear is that senior Australians want to stay living in their family home for as long as possible. They enjoy living in the communities they’re a part of and want to stay surrounded by their friends and familes. The forums here, and others like it right across the country, will help inform the Coalition Government’s aged care policy platform. If you would like a copy of my Aged Pension Guide, and information on the My Aged Care system, please contact my office on 02 6652 6233or via email at Luke.Hartsuyker.MP@aph.gov. au

‘Bush’ typically an Aussie term my

LAURIE BARBER

was “what do you think this is, bush week?” The Macquarie dictionary had bit more information. It said bush week was “an imaginary holiday time when country people come to town” and “a time when people are taken advantage of”. The Dinkum Aussie Dictionary said bushweek (one word) was a situation where everything was a bloody mess. That was written by Crooked Mick. Sidney J Baker has an attempt and quotes “what’s this, bush week?” The word bush comes from the Dutch word bosch. The Australian Dictionary of Insults and Vulgarities, compiled by Blind Freddy, says bush week can be explained as if an ignorant cockie behaved in the city as if he was still in the bush. Around 1919 some people tried to organise a Bush Week to publicise the attractions of living in country towns, but nothing came of it. Several

other attempts have been considered with only minor success. Sydney people, and I expect people living in other capitals, did not want to know what life was like in country towns. Several other expressions contain the word bush. They include going bush, bush work, bush craft, bush lawyer, bush telegraph, bushranger, bushwhacker, bushfire, bushed and about a hundred other terms that fill up several pages of my big dictionary. About half of them are Australian terms. A long time ago, well before the bush week attempt of 1919, Morris’s Dictionary of Australian Words said the bush was any place well away from the influence of the big towns. The book What’s Their Story says bush has produced more compounds than any other word. It goes on to say bush has been referred to as a political constituency. The book Sydney and the Bush contains a joint pastoral letter on page 95. It condemns the principle of secularist education “because they are the seedlings of future immorality, infidelity and lawlessness”. I still think they could have picked a better title. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Choristers sing out for local men By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

Left: A group of Hastings Choristers - there’s a need for more male voices

CALLING all men – The Hastings Choristers wants you. The Hastings Choristers are holding a Singalong Messiah Workshop this month and have already had a number of bookings, but are still searching for some deeper notes. “We have had a good response to registrations, the only disappointment so far is that we don’t have enough tenors and basses - enough men,” said Robyn Ryan, Musical Director of the Hastings Choristers. “We would really like to encourage both women and men to get involved. “I think the thing is that people are thinking they aren’t good enough, but this isn’t a concert that’s too academic, it’s a peoples’ Messiah and it’s for everybody.” All shower singers alike are encouraged to take that step they’ve always wanted to take. “It will be a wonderful opportunity for people who secretly love to sing but they have never plucked up the courage,” Robyn said. “We know that there are a lot of men singers in Port Macquarie who would just love the experience and we just want to encourage them to come along and have a go. No one’s going to say ‘you’re not good enough’ or ‘you’re singing out of tune’, we welcome everybody.” Robyn believes that there are many reasons holding many men and women back from singing, mostly a lack of encouragement. “There are a lot of people out there who have been told when they were in college or university that they can’t sing in tune, so it’s really that lack of encouragement they’ve had which has stopped them from singing,” Robyn explained. “For men, way way back in country towns they typically played sports and didn’t sing, but now the research shows us that people who sing in choirs are healthier and happier and you make new friendships. I have got both men and women-

only ensembles and they each go home with a smile on their faces each week. “There’s a lot of people who are sitting down doing Sudoku or crosswords, and its seen as a way to avoid dementia, but there’s nothing better than learning and reading music, and singing. It really does benefit your total health and wellbeing.” The Messiah might be known as a big, classical work, but the Hastings Choristers have made it easy and enjoyable for all by just including the choruses, making the concert much shorter and attainable. The Sing-along Messiah will be held on the weekend of November 25 and 26 at the St Agnes Church, Hay Street, Port Macquarie. And if you’re not up to getting up on stage, audience members will also be singing as well as the choir. Registrations close on Friday November 17, so get in quick and register online at http://www. ticketebo.com.au/hastings-choristers/sing-alongmessiah.html Singers will get great value for money with the weekend tutorials and concert, a t-shirt, and some great new skills. Singers will have to get their own music, which is available at Coastal

Music in Port Macquarie. The Sing-along Messiah workshops will take place from 9am – 4.30pm on the Saturday and

10am – 1.30pm on the Sunday with the concert starting at 2pm and finishing at 3.30pm. Choir participant tickets range from $10 to $50 and concert audience tickets range are $10 for students and $20 for adults. The concert will be accompanied by renowned Sydney organist Heather Moen Boyd, playing the stunning new organ in the Catholic Church. Concert tickets will be available at the door or through Glasshouse Box Office – Ph: 6581 8888 or at www.glasshouse.org.au (transaction fees may apply). Wauchope is revved • From Page 1 And, unlike grey nomads who may pull in to make a cuppa and lunch in their van, riders will dismount, spend their cash, or even stay the night. In fact figures have put the average spend for motorcyclists in general at around $150 a day versus the self-contained grey nomads at around one-third of that. One of the key organisers of the event, Todd Taylor, said he was expecting hundreds of bikes and many more spectators to the event which would feature a show and shine, stalls, buskers, a swap meet, the bike gymkhana and the popular egg and spoon event. There will be games for all with a motorcycle theme, including throwing a ball into a helmet, face painting and a jumping castle. “The event will be held at Wauchope Showgrounds and we begin at 8am running until 4pm,” said ‘Toddy’. “Everyone is invited to celebrate the first anniversary of this milestone for riders. “Admission is $10, with under 18s free. “There is also camping available for a charge and swap meets sites are available for $20.”

Road petition about to By SUE PATERICK RESIDENTS living along Pipers Creek Road and surrounding areas near Kempsey, recently united to call for immediate action to tar a road they see as busy, dangerous and a health hazard. The last straw came when Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) performed a maintenance grade, which some residents claim, turned the normally rutted and rocky road into a dust machine littered with slippery marble-like rocks. Pipers Creek Road is a main road for this Dondingalong community with many other roads linking into it and has been the scene of numerous motor vehicle and motor bike accidents, some very serious. In fact, there were four accidents in the four months leading up to September. After a serious motor bike accident outside his house in early September and then having to endure plumes of choking dust when Pipers Creek Road was graded, resident Rick Furber was forced to act. He wrote a letter to KSC explaining the intolerable conditions the Pipers Creek Road community were living with and began a petition to tar the road. Council responded by placing several traffic counters on both Pipers Creek Road and Wirrang Drive. Mr Furber’s petition has received 315 signatures so far and he will present it to Council at its next meeting on Tuesday, November 21. He said the majority of the people who signed his petition were mainly residents and their families and friends who all thought Pipers Creek Road was dangerous. “The second highest comment was that gravel wasn’t the answer because the road went from rough as guts to slippery, dusty

The dust plume behind a car in front of Mr Furber’s house on Pipers Creek Road and dangerous after the grading,” Mr Furber explained. “Householders were also worried about their health because the air and their drinking and irrigation water was polluted by dust, which made their homes very hard to live in.” Other residents commented that they were

sick of broken promises because tarring Pipers Creek Road had been talked about for 35 years. “And in that time residents have been concerned about accidents, health issues, damage to their vehicles, motor bike safety, and the safety of school children getting on and off buses in clouds of dust.”

Singing sensation COME and enjoy a great afternoon of singing angels on Sunday, November 19, at a benefit to help support a local lad when Wednesday perform at the Oddfellows Hall in West Kempsey. The local a‘Capella group (aka Phoenix) plus some friends will put on a great afternoon of entertainment. An entry fee of $15 will go toward the Steven Stewart Fund. Steve Stewart is 24-year-old local lad, currently living in Victoria with his partner, who had a spinal stroke due to unknown causes that left him paralysed from the neck down. Doctors are still investigating the cause of the stroke. Steve attended Kempsey High School and worked at Macleay Valley House. The event begins at 4pm and will finish at 7pm. Organisers request everyone to bring their own drinks and nibbles and enjoy some sublime pleasure in a relaxed café-style atmosphere. Sweets and tea and coffee will be provided.

Don’t waste this chance The view from Mr Furber’s kitchen window shows the level of dust the residents of this Dondingalong community endure every day after every vehicle Another concern was the amount of heavy vehicles using the road including regular logging trucks and school buses. “People were also concerned about the speed limit going from 80 on a sensible sealed road to 100 on a slippery gravel road,” Mr Furber added. “Apart from being dangerous, driving that fast generates a huge plume of dust that descends on those of us who live on the road and it settles into our lungs, eyes, noses, water tanks and houses. “We’ve noticed that if a vehicle travels at 60 or below the plume of dust is greatly reduced.” Mr Furber said people were also worried at

the speed the logging trucks drove along the road and believed limiting the trucks to 40 kilometres would improve safety and dust levels. The results of the traffic count on Pipers Creek Road stated there was an average of 150 vehicles per day on the gravel sections and between 240 and 449 on the sealed sections. However, Mr Furber maintains that the count could have been a lot higher because the first two weeks of the three and a bit the traffic counters were on Pipers Creek Road was during the school holidays. “That means there were 80 less school buses during that time, not to mention less vehicle

traffic because people were away on holidays or just not going into work and school,” he said. At his presentation to KSC this month, Mr Furber will request that Council tar the road. “I lived here for over 30 years and during the last five years the dust and safety issues have been horrendous,” he said. “The safety and health of the Pipers Creek Road community and that of our families, friends and visitors should be paramount.” Mr Furber urges anyone wanting to further support his petition to tar Pipers Creek Road to attend the next Council meeting.

Funding available to build better regions COUNCILS and other organisations are being encouraged to apply for Round Two of the Federal Coalition Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF), with applications now open for funding to support further job creation and economic growth in regional and rural Australia. We are particularly keen to support local businesses and job creation, while also ensuring the needs of the community are met. The fact BBRF has two streams - Infrastructure Projects and Community Investments – means communities have even more flexibility in developing proposals. With submissions closing on December 19, 2017, for both streams, I encourage all eligible organisations to get their application in. The program is designed to back projects that create further investment in the community. Applicants should demonstrate how their project will drive economic development, make their region a more attractive place to live and

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

foster partnerships across their community. Infrastructure investment, and planning and capability building are significant to improving outcomes in a community. A clearly articulated regional aged care strategy, for instance, can have as big an impact on residents as building a new aged care facility in a single town. When combined, both streams will encourage job creation, economic growth, and encourage social cohesion across Australia. BE a part of Port Macquarie’s Biggest PT Session ever. Locals Kerrie Winn and Skye Petho, along with their personal trainer Kylie Jones of GI Jones, are putting on the biggest personal training session Port Macquarie has seen, and it’s all for a good cause. “I am passionate about assisting both girls with their fundraising endeavours as I know the money raised will, through Cancer Council NSW, assist those cancer patients going through their cancer journeys here in the Hastings region,” said Ms Jones. The session will be held down at Town Beach where the ‘Stars of The Hastings Dance for Cancer’ will be welcoming families and friends from all over town to raise funds for Cancer Council. “These women have been involved with raising funds for cancer for a long time and have also raised $6,000 for the ‘Stars of The Hastings Dance for Cancer’ event in a week’s time,” said Katie Mead, Community Relations Coordinator for the Mid North Coast Cancer Council NSW. Skye is a cancer survivor herself who was diagnosed 12 months ago with breast cancer and is now in remission. She knows just how important these types of events are for anyone going through cancer treatment. Kerrie has also been touched by cancer. “I lost a close friend to cancer and I wanted to be able to give back to the community through the Cancer Council charity,” Ms Winn said. Even though there are numerous fundraisers throughout the Mid North Coast annually for cancer, there is still a need for more. “At the Cancer Council we make sure that

approximately 373 new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed, effecting families, carers, and communities. “We are really lucky at the Cancer Council because we have such a strong name and we are a very transparent organisation and people trust us because we do what we say we are going to do,” Ms Mead explained. “We use those funds effectively and we have really great outcomes and are constantly updating our donors with research outcomes and changes made due to the funds they are giving us.” Whether fit or not, join in the fun at Port’s Biggest PT Session Fundraiser this Sunday November 19 from 8am at Town Beach. Entry is by donation and any amount over $10 will automatically go into the draw for the Telstra Samsung Galaxy Tablet. Other raffle items include a $100 gift voucher from Skye Petho, award winning glass artist and owner of Arthouse Industries, and a further $100 voucher from Kerrie Winn, owner of Harvey Norman Port Macquarie.

TWO new community clubs will take to the field in the 2018 Football Mid North Coast competitions. The FMNC has approved applications from Iona Football Club and Western Phoenix FC, taking the total number of clubs in the zone to 31. FMNC covers an area from Stuarts Point in the north, Bulahdelah in the south and Gloucester in the west. FMNC Chairman Mike Parsons said the expansion comes as player numbers are on the rise. “2017 saw over 7000 registered participants within our zone and the game is certainly in a healthy state,” he said. “We welcome Iona FC and Western Phoenix FC into our football family and look forward to seeing them on the park next season. Both clubs have dedicated people involved and are well placed to cater for new people looking to play.” Iona FC Football Co-ordinator Tony Judge said the club would be focused on player development. “We’ll be looking to provide a professional, friendly, encouraging learning environment particularly suited to helping junior players reach their full

potential as footballers,” said Judge. The club, which will wear maroon as its main colour, will be based at St Columba Anglican School with all training and FMNC matches to be played on the school oval. Western Phoenix FC will also be focused on junior development, according to Club President Ben White. “We are delighted to be the latest addition to the FMNC family,” he said. “The ‘Phoenix’ will aim to provide a professional development education program for all of our members.” The Phoenix home ground will be Charlie Watt Reserve in Telegraph Point. Their players will take the field in purple, black and gold colours. FMNC Club and Referee Development Officer Justin McIntyre said both clubs would be a welcome addition to the zone. “Both the new ventures presented well to the FMNC board and their applications ticked off all the boxes required. They have a positive attitude towards the growth and development of our game and I’m sure will prove to be welcome additions to the zone and our wider community,” he said.
