A baton of hope By SUE PATERICK
THREE Kempsey residents are among thousands of Australians who will proudly take part in the Queen’s Baton Relay in the lead up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The Queen’s Baton arrives in Australia on Sunday, December 24, and for the next 100 days it will travel 40,000 kilometres through our wide brown land. The distance is expected to take one million steps. Inside the baton is a message from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II calling for the Commonwealth’s athletes to come together in peaceful and friendly competition. Her representative will read this message at the Commonwealth Games’ opening ceremony on April 4. The Queen’s Baton started its epic 388day journey from Buckingham Palace in March and will travel through all the Commonwealth’s nations and territories. According to its website, the relay is a Games’ tradition that celebrates the Commonwealth’s diversity, inspires community pride and excites people about world-class sport and culture. Kempsey is one of several Mid North Coast towns selected to host a leg of the relay. When the Queen’s Baton arrives on Friday February 2, locals Paul Phillips, Mark Morrison and Drew Walsh will help carry it through town towards its final destination on the Gold Coast. Paul Phillips said he was chuffed to be selected. • Continued Page 10

EXPERT CHEMIST DR. GEOFF PAIN Ph.D SPEAKING AGAINST FLUORIDATION At Westport Club from 5pm on Thursday, November 9th Entry is $10, Contact 6582 7836 for information. Dr. Pain is especially interested in health impacts and health risks associated with water fluoridation and fluorine-based chemicals in Australia-wide. On October 9, 2017, the Four Corners ABC TV program highlighted serious health issues associated with the use (and abuse) of fire retardant chemicals used at 18 air force bases around Australia during the past couple of decades. Although acknowledged as highly toxic, but not explicity identified in the program, the offending chemicals are environmentally destructive fluorine-based organic acids (e.g. PFOS – C8HF17O3S). The fluoridating agent used locally is inorganic fluorosilici acid in greatly diluted form. In concentrated for, as trucked and stored on site at the Rosewood Plant, this chemical is highly corrosive and a dangerous S6 poision. It is a profitable waste product for the superphosphate manufacturing industry because councils pick up the cost for its removal and ‘safe’ dispersal into the wider environment. This process in undeniably a form of government approved environmental pollution. Most local citizens accept the assurances of their dentisits, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. NSW Health and Federal Health in turn that fluoridated water assists in reducing tooth decay and is ‘safe’ to drink. Apart from conceding a causative link to dental fluorosis which does not impair functionality, ‘no proven’ long term harms are admitted. Dr. Pain will demolish these claims and suggest how citizens can fight back.

Old hall springs to life Centre of Belmore River community since 1911

“
A SENSE of community and belonging was as evident at last Sunday’s Belmore River Hall Charity Markets as it has been for gatherings there for more than 100 years. Since 1911 this historic old hall has provided a place for the local community to come together and socialise. One of the hall’s volunteer trustees, Trish Bennett, said the Charity Markets were held each year in spring to raise money for the hall’s upkeep and for Variety Australia: The Children’s Charity. This charity supports children and families who are facing challenges through sickness, disadvantage or living with a disability. The markets also support other charities. Trish has fond memories of attending local dances at the hall when she was a teenager and lived in Kempsey. After marrying a local, she became a part of the Belmore River farming community and has lived there for 45 years. Like all Belmore River locals, Trish loves the hall. “It just has such a lovely family atmosphere,” she said. Two brothers from Frederickton, Robert and Fred Debenham, built the hall on a 2.8-hectare reserve to meet the needs of the local farming community. The hall was made from local timber with a tallowwood floor and started life as a reading room and a library. What a thrill it would have been when a stage for performances and two dressing rooms were added. “The residents used to arrive by horsedrawn carriages or by boat,” Trish said. Fred also built a cream boat named Lois that travelled up and down Belmore River collecting cream and milk. He not only carried cream cans to the butter factory in Kempsey, Fred also carried a lot of extra goods and messages for Belmore River farmers. After the Great Depression years Fred was reported as saying that if it wasn’t for the generosity of those farmers paying him for extra jobs he wouldn’t have survived those lean years. In 1930s the hall was sold to a farmer so he could use it for a hay shed, but the local community rallied together to raise the funds to save it. A road across the floodgates was built then so residents had quick access to the hall instead of traversing all the way around the long and winding Belmore River.
Trish said some time after that the Recreation Park Trust and the Belmore River Hall Trust joined forces and the rent for using the 2.8-hectare reserve kept the hall going. Local famers still lease this prime grazing land today and the money still goes towards maintaining the hall.

Electricity was connected to the hall in the 1940s. To celebrate its 100th birthday back in 2011 residents from both the past and present came from near and far. A DVD of the hall’s history and photographs of that celebration was made and can still be
ordered for a cost of $10. If anyone would like a DVD call Trish on 0428674277. Since July this year Belmore River Hall has been undergoing a facelift and the work is almost completed. According to Trish, Belmore River resident Steve Rowe approached local Member of Parliament Melinda Pavey for a $26,000 grant from the Lands Department to help fund the renovation. These renos included disabled access and a new toilet block accessible from the hall. While we have to wait another year for the next Charity Markets, Belmore River Hall is available to hire for events and birthday parties. To hire the hall call 6567 4003.

Energy cost impacts
I REFER to the recent letter commending Council on its proposal to be self-sufficient in its energy needs by 2027 based on the generation of 100 per cent of its energy needs on a costeffective basis. While this strategy is to be commended, as a ratepayer I am concerned at the use of ratepayer money to be spent on infrastructure which has little to no benefit to rate payers who pay rates for common services which benefit all ratepayers and not simply ‘feel good’ projects which can never be cost effective. Council must take into consideration not simply the displacement of cost of its own energy requirements, but the impact it places on the cost of energy for its ratepayers. It has been demonstrated that Australian power prices have risen to be the highest in the world by the subsidy of renewable energy technology with is intermittent and unreliable operation. We need to promote reliable, low-cost generation that benefits all and not stand-alone systems which do not provide the benefits of diversity. An example of this was the past interconnection of all generating plant in the eastern states in order to provide a low-cost reliable system based on economy of scale. The push to install solar and battery solutions to provide individual households with a reliable source of energy as the reliability of Australia’s power network is destroyed by intermittent
power generation technologies results in high capital costs with no net energy savings to customers who install such systems. If customers are prepared to pay over $20,000 per household to provide security of supply for a period of not greater than 10 years before batteries need to be replaced at 75 per cent of their initial investment why do we need to promote individual security over system security from reliable generation sources? We all know we purchase low-cost printers for our computers only to be charged extremely high prices for the ink they use in order to cover the real long-run operating costs of these devices. Similarly, we should not be fooled into investing in generation technologies which are subsidised by governments only to be charged, like our printer ink, for the power we purchase from these devices. In the case of electric energy the cost of energy is a benefit to the producer and not the user. Renewable generation plants approved by state governments must recover its true cost by the sale of its more expensive energy to cover the much higher investment cost. I trust that Council will stand firm to its statement that no expenditure of ratepayers’ money will be spent on new infrastructure until it has been subjected to - and passes - a full cost/ analysis test on its cost including its impact to its rate payers. right, generally, something is not right. If this proposal is to be considered for development the ratepayers and residence need to understand the following: Once it’s gone, it’s gone! The community would lose the last piece of prime waterfront real estate in Port Macquarie, albeit we would gain an art wall which would be installed around the perimeter of the development and follow the refurbished foreshore walkway. A fancy way to say there will be a big fence to ensure guests privacy at the exclusive luxury resort hotel inside. Another convention centre would cause a lot of grief to the existing businesses who offer conference/event facilities and services, but my concern is The Glasshouse. It could take a direct hit, at ratepayer’s expense. Again, too much to bear thinking about! We would lose more centrally located parking until a multi-level carpark was constructed and operational. Once again, I’m not sure Uncle Dan’s is the right spot geographically, considering our aged/aging demographic. We would lose our library until it was integrated into the new Council service centre, which we would need to fund and build. We would lose our community swimming pool, until we can afford to fund and build a new one on a different site - and spend more money if we need to buy an appropriate piece of land. So, rather than sticking our heads in the sand and moaning about it 10 years down the track – let’s be proactive, get this conversation started and work together towards creating the community’s vision for our own backyard! Are you in?
I WOULD like to give my thanks and gratitude to the staff at East Port Veterinary Hospital and especially to Vanessa for the tender care of my Boxer girl ‘Bella’ and the gentle way you finally put her to sleep and out of her pain. Your consideration and understanding shown for my own pain helped me so much in saying goodbye to my faithful and true friend of almost 11 years. Thank you, Vanessa, from my heart - you are a credit to your profession.
Thumbs Up TO Dr Phil Gaut and Erica, Caroline and Cheryl the receptionists at Camden Haven Medical Centre. The girls are always happy, friendly and helpful and always do their best to fit you in to an appointment even at the busiest of times. Dr Gaut is always helpful and explains things clearly and in detail even when extremely busy. Many thanks to you all for your service.

FOLKS! There’s a new development proposal on the table and the whole community needs to talk about it. Presented at last week’s Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce meeting, the proposal is for a seven-storey luxury resort hotel to be built on the Plaza car park Crown land and possibly a convention centre on the Food for Less site - if Woolworths, Crown lands and PMHC come to the party. We all know something must be done with this eyesore amid our beautiful city, but I can’t say I’m convinced this proposal is something the majority of our community would be happy with. For starters, to get anything moving on this site we need to see more than one option, expressions of interest are open so if you have any ideas now is the time to put them on the table. We need some serious community consultation together with all stakeholders to ensure PMHC residents and ratepayers’ input is taken into consideration before any deals are struck, between any parties. Once there is a clear directive from the community on how they want this property developed, we can create a concept to suit all parties. The proposal we saw last week would require a lot of wheeling and dealing to make it work as it requires land buy/swap deals between Crown land, PMHC and Woolworths. That’s just to get the hotel and convention centre happening! Under this proposal Woolworths will move to where the current library and swimming pool are, Dan Murphy’s will follow suit and before you know it we will have a new shopping strip instead of a swimming pool and a multi-storey carpark on the corner of Gordon and Horton Streets. I can imagine the gridlock. Don’t get me wrong! I’m all for progress and I am a true believer in healthy competition, it keeps the economy going. I just have a problem when alarm bells are going off, left, right and centre! No matter how pretty a picture is being painted for the general public to consume. If my gut tells me something is not

Snappers focus on health By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC PORT Macquarie is snapping up some of the best photographs from around Australia. The Your Health Link National Photographic Competition is in its second year and is down to 71 finalists from a record number of 1300 entries from across Australia. The competition run by the Mid North Coast Local Health District offers more than $45,000 in prizes in four different categories – primary school, high school, mobile, and open 18-plus.
Community members were given the topic ‘Healthy Life Healthy You’ which hopes to increase health literacy and decrease childhood obesity. “It’s a health literacy project so it encourages people to think about health and healthy lifestyles by using photography as an interesting and exciting way to do that,” said Carolyn Guichard, Your Health Link Program Manager and Competition Organiser. “Our judges were looking for images that represented a healthy and active lifestyle when

selecting the winning photos.” Ms Guichard said the photographs were of very high standard and it won’t be easy to pick a winner. “There are some amazing photos in the finalists and we are really excited about the ones that have come through and the creativity put into the theme ‘Healthy Life Healthy You’.” Among the 71 finalists there are five from Port Macquarie and 23 from across the Mid North Coast. There will be an Opening Night of the
Competition Exhibition where the winners for each category will be revealed. This will take place on November 17 at the Glasshouse Port Macquarie. The finalists and winners’ entries will then be displayed the following day in a public exhibition at the Glasshouse from 10am to 4pm. Reunion for ‘Nashos’ By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC CALLING all local ‘Nashos’ for the 50th anniversary reunion of the 11th intake of national servicemen in 1968. John Lloyd, from Sydney, is rounding up ex-servicemen from all around Australia to celebrate a 50-year reunion at Kingscliff, northern NSW, on February 7-9 next year. Mr Lloyd believes that there are still many ‘Nashos’ living on the Mid North Coast who would now be aged between 70 and 71. “As we aged and started to retire we moved away from the big city and a lot of people looked for the better lifestyle and moved up to the Mid North Coast,” said Mr Lloyd. “I have quite a few personal friends who are ex-‘Nashos’ up there, but there would be others around as well and the 11th intake is one of the largest intakes that took place in the National Service scheme. “This reunion is for anybody around Australia who wants to attend. “The 11th intake was a little bit special because of the heavy burden on the armed forces due to battle casualties going back to two previous years. “There wasn’t enough numbers in the year 1968 to get a big march in the first half of the year, which is what they wanted, so they called more people in. “I went to Vietnam with the 5th Battalion and there were a lot of 11th intakes that went to Vietnam as part of the 5th Battalion and 1st Battalion and, in fact, all of the 5th Battalion’s infantry first-aiders and medics were all 11th intake, which is quite unique.” Mr Lloyd said reunions like these are not only great to reunite friends, but also aid in the healing process from such traumatic times. “These reunions can give some chaps an absolutely new lease of life,” Mr Lloyd said. “I’ve seen grown men just break down in tears just standing around talking to the mates they hadn’t seen in 40 years or more. “The emotional and psychological damage, it never moves away either. There’s the ‘20 year syndrome’ which says the brain hides things that you want to push back out of memory but it can only do it for a certain amount of time. Twenty years after any traumatic event people seem to go over that event all over again and you see a resurgence in mental issues and even suicide.” For many who performed National Service, and even veterans of today, the hardest part is settling back into society. “I think some people are still scarred,” said Mr Lloyd. “It disrupted careers and it disrupted families. It also divided families within the one household – mothers might have been heavily against it and the father might have thought it was a jolly good idea because it would

and Afghanistan, they have a huge problem
“Another aspect is when people got out,
re-associating with civilian life as they were
promised their old jobs back, but in reality, private industry in many cases couldn’t give them their old jobs back because somebody else was doing the job while they were away. “The other part was that you spent two years in close association with mates, the camaraderie was built up, and of course that all split up again. You try and keep in touch but as the years go by that doesn’t always work out because you came from Australia-wide. So that’s why this reunion is so important for so many of us.” The reunion will be held on February 7-9 next year at the Kingscliff Bowls Club. All 11th intake servicement, plus partners and family, are invited. Overseas service is not a requirement. The format is a casual gathering on February 7 for a ‘meet and greet’, a formal three-course dinner on February 8 and finishes up on February 9 for ‘recovery and catch-ups’. There is plenty of budget-priced accommodation close by. Contact Tony van Sleeuwen ASAP on 0418 308 008 or via email at tonyvs47@bigpond. com. FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson Hello and welcome to my first weekly column in Your Local Independent! The purpose of this column is to provide a platform for the community to engage with me as well as opening communications regarding Council’s progress and achievements as well as addressing any concerns that the community has within the Port MacquarieHastings area. I have been so busy since being elected and many events have happened. Last week I had my official photo taken in the official mayoral robes. This photo will hang on the wall outside the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Chamber in the company of the nine men
who have had the honour of being the Mayor of Port Macquarie-Hastings before me. On face value, this may not seem a particularly extraordinary experience for a new Mayor, but I can truly say that in that moment of slipping on the robes and mayoral chains I realised that no woman had ever worn the robes before. The extraordinary opportunity that has been bestowed upon me is not taken for granted and I consider it a true privilege to be given this leadership role by our community. I am very proud to represent you as the 10th Mayor and first ever female Mayor of Port Macquarie-Hastings. After 85 days in the job, I’ve greatly enjoyed accepting invitations to spend time with many across the region
pmhc.nsw.gov.au and learning about the contributions of our community – whether it be attending a CWA meeting, speaking with business or community groups or visiting local schools. I’ve also chaired three Council meetings and had many conversations with other levels of government (including our local members and Ministers) to ensure we can all work together for the benefit of our community. In future in this column, I look forward to sharing more with you around my focus, how Council works, and most importantly, how we can collaborate as community and council to achieve great things over the next three years. Take care until next week, Peta

Fans revved up for Ford fiesta By BARBARA DYER
The Timeless Quilters, which meet every week at Port Macquarie Sailing Club or at Emerald Downs, were dressed for the occasion - their annual Pink Ribbon Day. The quilters raised $884 through raffle ticket sales and trading tables, and donated the proceeds to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute’s Breast Cancer Service.
Pink ladies put fun in fundraiser PORT Macquarie’s Timeless Quilters have proved, once again, they are not only gifted quilters but they also have generous hearts. Almost 40 members and 10 guests gathered at Port Macquarie Sailing Club on Thursday for their annual Pink Ribbon Day in support of breast cancer patients. This year, the quilters opted to keep the proceeds of their fundraiser local and donated a generous $884 to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute’s Breast Cancer Service in the Hastings. The quilters are generous supporters of local patients and local families, donating regularly to Port Macquarie Base Hospital’s Special Care Nursery, the Paediatric Unit, Palliative Care and the Renal Unit. President Sue Jenner said the focus of the quilters’ annual Pink Ribbon Day had always
been breast cancer and this year the women wanted to support local breast cancer patients. “Our Pink Ribbon Day is about the fun in fundraiser, but we also know our donation will be appreciated by those in the local community who have a breast cancer diagnosis,” Ms Jenner said. The Mid North Coast Cancer Institute’s Breast Cancer Nurse Specialist, Joanne Woodlands, said the Timeless Quilters’ generosity would make a very real difference to her patients. “Breast cancer is still the most common cancer for women, but community support through donations to cancer centres such as ours are really helping us to improve treatment options and support for women, giving them a better quality of life” Ms Woodlands said.

THE Fords and their fans will be out in force come the weekend for the annual Mid North Coast Ford Owners Club Show ‘n’ Shine. With weather predictions looking kind for Sunday, the event at Westport Park could top the 150 entries who drove or were trailered in for last year’s event. “It will be a real mix of vehicles too,” said Annette, herself the proud owner of Ford’s last model, the XR6 Sprint which was rolled out last year, according to the makers, ‘to give Falcon fans an unforgettable vehicle’. “Only 500 were released, and I have number 22,” says Annette, adding that while hers would certainly be among the latest models, the Show ‘n’ Shine would bring in the old and the new. “There will be a mixture with older cars and historic plates; hopefully we’ll some early Model T Fords making an outing and this year we expect to see some Ford Jeeps and a large number of Mustangs. “But it’s open to all Fords of any age.” Perhaps there might even be a few who will ‘convert’ says Annette, admitting her first car was a Holden. “We are a family club with a mixed membership of couples and singles and families with kids, including second generation Ford owners.”
Cars will bump in between 7-9am for Sunday’s All Ford Day Show ‘n’ Shine at Westport Park with entry $10 per car, payable on the day. “All money raised will be donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Hastings Support Group,” said Annette. “At 1pm there will be a presentation of trophies sponsored by Miedecke Motor Group. “We will also have Shannons Super Rig, market stalls, food and drink stalls and a barbecue run by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Rescue Service Hastings support group. “There will be a pin-up competition hosted by vintage online clothing store, Velvet-Rose’s Pin Up Dressing Room, with the winner announced at noon. The green Shannons Super Rig is a hub for the motor enthusiast whenever it rolls in; the impressive 21-metre long truck and trailer unit unfolding into an eight metre by eight metre state-of-the-art hospitality, entertainment and information centre. The truck becomes a self-contained automotive expo, encompassing large plasma screens, driving simulators, Sony PlayStation gaming consoles, automotive memorabilia displays, a web kiosk, outdoor events stage, viewing deck with barbecue facilities and the Shannons Goggomobil. Raffles will be held with prizes of accommodation and breakfast, $500 worth of tools and vouchers for everything from meat to hair products. The Show ‘n’ Shine at Westport Park on Sunday, November 5 is a day for the family and Ford fans.

Your help can ‘Maker’ difference THINGS are cooking round in Albert Circuit, where the college has set up its new MakerSpace Centre at No. 4, to encourage young people and adult learners to explore their skills in hands-on, practical learning projects. Now we’re keen to find others with an interest in sharing this exciting way of learning skills and helping create new pathways to work. So we’re holding a special Garage Sale, BBQ and Working Bee at 4 Albert Circuit on Saturday November 18, from 8am to 2pm, inviting everyone to come and get involved, plus find some great bargains. If you have some spare time, we could really do with a hand to keep developing the MakerSpace. We’re going to be doing some renovations on the building, plus seeking donations of tools, supplies and garage sale ‘stuff’. Over many years the college has proven the value of shared learning experiences, both formal and informal. MakerSpaces create opportunities where community connections are supported and encouraged, with educators and students pooling their skills and knowledge, sharing in the tasks of teaching and learning. Programs at the Makerspace will offer youth and DIY adults opportunities to join in learning experiences including: building and maintenance, landscaping, small engine and bicycle repair, textiles and design and all sorts of creative arts. If you have time to volunteer a few hours a week, come and see us on November 18 and get the vibe of our new learning environment. Or else call the college on 68537288 and check out our webpage at www.portace.com. au

SUPERMARKET Savings For NSW Seniors: NSW seniors can save on average $200 a year on their groceries, thanks to Seniors Card discounts the NSW Government has secured with the Woolworths Group. NSW Seniors Card holders are now eligible for a five per cent discount on Woolworths WISH eGift cards that can be used towards purchases at Woolworths Group stores, including supermarkets and Big W. Savings on supermarket home deliveries, insurance and mobile phone products are also available through the Seniors Card website. We know for people living on fixed incomes every dollar counts. As a government we are committed to driving down the cost of living, especially for seniors, who contribute so much to our communities. EVERY day we interact with the online world - whether it be checking Facebook, reading the latest headlines, buying a new pair of shoes or checking your bank balance. However behind this convenience is an environment that we must treat with caution, today more so than ever. In the last 12 months, the Australian Cyber Security Centre has identified 47,000 cyber incidents, a 15 per cent increase on last year. Cybercrime is also estimated to cost the Australian economy more than $1 billion a year. There are five simple things everyone can do to improve their cyber security: 1. Limit what you share - be proactive in managing your privacy. You don’t need to publish your birthdate, birthplace and profession on Facebook. 2. Create strong passwords - at least 16 characters long. 3. Protect yourself online - regularly update all software, and ensure you have anti-virus software on all your devices. 4. Back up your data – as often as you can. 5. Avoid online scams - watch out for suspicious messages, links and attachments.
Looking into the origin of X-ray
MOST of us have had X-rays at some time. But X-rays were originally called X-strahlen. In fact, they still are, depending on which country you’re in. For a while the rays were called Rontgen rays. A brief history: The name X-strahlen was given by the discoverer in 1895, German physicist Wilhelm Konrad von Rontgen, who was conducting entirely different experiments. He found that radiation was passing through objects that were opaque to ordinary light. On November 8, 1895, Wilhelm Konrad Röntgen accidentally discovered an image cast from his cathode ray generator, projected far beyond the possible range of the cathode rays (now known as an electron beam). Further investigation showed that the rays were generated at the point of contact of the cathode ray beam on the interior of the vacuum tube, that they were not deflected by magnetic fields, and they penetrated many kinds of matter. A week after his discovery, Rontgen took an X-ray photograph of his wife’s hand which clearly revealed her wedding ring and her bones. The photograph electrified the general public and aroused great scientific interest in the new form of radiation. Hence the term X-rays, also referred as Röntgen rays, though this term is unusual outside of Germany).

X-rays can penetrate or pass through the human body and produce shadow-like images of structures such as bones, some of the organs, and signs of disease and injury. Rontgen called his discovery X-strahl, which I am told translates to X-ray in English. Rointgen called it the X-ray or X-strahlen, due to the fact that the essential nature was unknown. Today every hospital is equipped with an X-ray outfit, whatever they are called. Some early workers lost their lives because they did not understand radiation. X -rays have been in use in many other areas, including trucks at border crossings, some dental surgeries and some shoe sales outlets, as well as radiograph, art, crystallography. image, star, therapy and a whole host of other words. I have been told that X-rays have been seen as x-rays, lower case or upper case so take your pick
In 1896, Rontgen said “a sheet of aluminium 15mm thick (as I will call the rays for the sake of brevity) to pass but greatly reduce the fluorescence”. My Macquarie describes an X-ray as the examination of the interior of a person, among other definitions, Webster describes it as one used in medical diagnosis and Collins says a stream of radiation that can pass through some solid material to help a doctor see if there is anything wrong with you. Samuel Johnson in his 1755 dictionary said no words began with X. Times have changed since then. X-rays have been used in many contexts, but do not confuse X-rays with X-rated, which I am not allowed to watch. I was sitting in a restaurant having a cup of coffee when a woman came across and asked if I had ever heard of high dudgeon. Dudgeon means in a state of anger, or offence, or resentment High dudgeon means something similar, only more intense. High dudgeon, according to me, but I have been wrong in the past, means resentment or high anger or resentment. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Understand the true cost of aged care “
As Financial Advisors, it’s our job to ensure that our clients can minimise their care fee wherever possible, get the optimal use out of their resources and maximise their entitlements
“
IT is no secret that Australians are living longer. In fact, the Intergenerational Report published by the Federal Government in 2015 states that Australians have one of the longest life expectancies in the world. The report also predicts that the number of our population aged over 65 years is expected to double by 2025. It will be necessary for communities and families to plan ahead for the challenges that Aged Care will present so that older generations and their families can be in control of where they live and the care they receive in their later years. Financial Advisor at Morgans, Chris Young (pictured), says that most families often leave it until their loved one is in need of urgent care before they start to navigate the complexities of the Aged Care system. “We can still help them at this point however leaving Aged Care planning to the last minute can limit families’ care options and can cause a lot of unnecessary anxiety,” says Young. He advises that there are major considerations that families need to consider when planning ahead for a loved ones Aged Care. When families are sourcing Aged Care
accommodation, the cost of this service is of key consideration. Young explains: “It can be confusing for people accessing Aged Care services to understand the true costs involved. Most people are convinced that they will need to sell their existing property in order to afford their Aged Care, however this is not always the case. “As Financial Advisors, it’s our job to ensure that our clients can minimise their care fee wherever possible, get the optimal use out of their resources and maximise their entitlements.” The earlier that families can start having conversations to forward plan their transition to Aged Care the better. The transition process in critical or unexpected circumstances can lead to a huge emotional and financial minefield. To help people navigate the financial considerations involved in planning for Aged Care, Morgans are running free information seminars. To attend one of these seminars, please call 6583 1735 to reserve your seat or visit morgans. com.au/portmacquarie

Iconic Wauchope store turns 25 HASTINGS Co-op’s flagship store, the iconic Wauchope Department Store, will mark its 25th birthday on Thursday (November 2) with an instore celebration and sale - and the unveiling of its highly-anticipated Christmas windows. Chief executive officer Allan Gordon said the store’s longevity and success was attributed to its loyal customer base and team of dedicated staff, both old and new. “The Department Store has always prided itself on offering a unique shopping experience, and has become a mecca for those who love to browse for something different,” he said. “Since purchasing the former Parkers Store back in 1992, it has become a shopping magnet for locals and visitors from near and far, and we hope to be offering hand-picked treasures, designer labels and unique finds for many years to come.” The Department Store was originally named The Family Store and prior to that was operated by two generations of the Parker family. Hastings Co-op purchased the business in 1992 in a bid to help grow Wauchope’s retail centre and attract visitors to the town. Thursday night’s quarter century celebrations will include the unveiling of the Christmas window displays, which have been a labour of love for staff for many months. Other attractions
include: live music, late-night shopping, 25 per cent off storewide, sweet treats from Hastings Co-op’s Stirling Green Café and complimentary birthday cake and champagne. Manager Judy Standring said each of the windows in this year’s display had different themes featuring intricate figurines, animated characters and sparkling colour. “The Christmas displays have become a Wauchope tradition and we have people travelling from as far at the Macleay, Coffs Coast, Manning and Hunter valleys to appreciate them,” she said. To cement The Department Store’s reputation for being ‘Christmas Central’ in Wauchope, the dates for the annual Christmas sale days and instore Santa photos were also announced. The sale days will be held on December 1 and 2 and Santa photos will be taken by Melissa Lee Photography from 10am to 1pm on December 2, 9 and 16. Attractions at this year’s annual Christmas sale days include book signings with author Di Morrissey, Napoleon Perdis cosmetics consultations and giveaways, spot prizes, Bago Bluff tastings, Santa photos, a Triple M live broadcast and a performance by Hastings Home School Choir. The store will also have late night shopping to 7pm on December 18, 19, 20 and 21.

The Queen’s Baton Relay started its epic 388-day journey from Buckingham Palace in March and is pictured on its trek through Pakistan
Games Relay honour • From Page 1 “What can you say, it’s an honour,” he said. Paul has a heart of gold and works hard for his community. He has been in a wheelchair since 1991 but doesn’t let anything hold him back. “Other people are way worse off than me,” Paul said. For the past eight years he has been a volunteer group co-ordinator for Kempsey Shire Council’s (KSC) Graffiti Blasters. He volunteered in various capacities at Kempsey’s PCYC for 10 years before the Graffiti Busters and admitted to getting bored if he had nothing to do. Mark Morrison is the principal of the Macleay Vocational College and is a mentor and offers support for disadvantaged students. His contributions saw him receive the Kempsey Shire’s Citizen of the Year in 2015 at the Australia Day Awards. Like Paul, Mark also felt honoured to be asked to carry the Queen’s Baton. “Anything to represent the wider Macleay Valley community is an honour,” he said. “I was proud to be asked to represent my community.” While Mark thinks the Macleay Valley is beautiful, he believes it is the wonderful generosity of its people that makes it an awesome and amazing place to live. “The Macleay Valley is full of wonderful volunteers who just get things done and people who just keep on giving,” he said.
“I am a little humbled to be asked to carry the baton because there are far more deserving people than myself.” Drew Walsh is a young role model, playing and coaching junior sports, assisting farmers with flood relief and running anti-bullying and safe-driving talks at high schools. Drew received the Kempsey Shire Youth Citizen of the Year Award at the 2017 Australia Day Awards. He told the Independent he felt pretty privileged to be asked to carry the Queen’s Baton because he is the youngest of the three Kempsey locals to be asked. He is also proud to be taking part because he loves the Macleay Valley. “I wouldn’t live anywhere else,” Drew said. “It’s the ideal spot because it’s close to the beach and the mountains and has a lovely community.” He is relying on his rugby union fitness to run his leg of the relay. Other baton bearers for the Kempsey leg include former Crescent Head resident and Olympic bronze medallist swimmer Leith Brody, plus a host of South West Rocks and Port Macquarie residents and others from Taree and Sydney. Kempsey Shire Mayor, Liz Campbell, congratulated all of the baton bearers on their selection and said being a part of the wonderful tradition of carrying Her Majesty’s message was a fantastic opportunity for Kempsey.

MID North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) staff are celebrating after being named among the winners at the recent 19th annual NSW Health Awards at Sydney Olympic Park. The team behind the Working Together to Stop Violence project took home the trophy in the Safe and Healthy Workplace category, presented by Minister for Health Brad Hazzard and Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Rural Health Leslie Williams. Recognising the need to create a safe and compassionate workplace for its 4,000 staff, MNCLHD embarked on a journey to become the first Local Health District in Australia to achieve White Ribbon Workplace Accreditation. The 15-month accreditation process engaged the entire MNCLHD workforce to work towards a common goal of creating a safer workplace for people who disclose a situation of domestic and family violence.

Kempsey Ladies
CONGRATULATIONS to all the ladies from Crescent Head, Frederickton and Kempsey who took part in the annual Somerville Shield which has been contested for the last 35 years against South West Rocks. The Macleay Valley girls came out on top to bring home the Shield after three nail-biting, but good-spirited rounds. They were particularly pleased to retain their lead with the last of the three being played on SWR home soil, and would like to congratulate the SWR girls on their strong last round. Robyn Eller from Crescent Head received the best aggregate award with a score of 93 over the three rounds. Top work Robbie, those knees did the job! Last Wednesday at the Kempsey course, the ladies played an 18-hole Stableford event. Jennie Preston had a terrific round with 37 points. Her closest rivals were Nancy McNamara on 33 in Division 1, and Wendy Rogan on 32 (the Division 2 winner). Sharron McNamara claimed two NTPs along with Jill Stringer, Pam Bruce and Nell Campling with one each. Each week in November will be a fun game with mystery partners and Christmas festivities. This would be a great time to come and have a round if you would like to try golf. Just come out to the club and make yourself known before 9am on any Wednesday morning, or phone Nell (our re-elected captain) on 0412 649 099.

Small halls a big hit By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC SMALL halls are making a big impact in the music festival scene. Wauchope and many regional towns across Australia will be bringing big music names to their halls at this year’s Festival of Small Halls. “I think sometimes it can be quite difficult to get to remote towns because of the distance to travel and a lot of the time the artists are only over in Australia for a short period of time,” said Courtney Wild, Tour Producer/Manager of Festival of Small Halls. “This festival is great because we are able to get these artists to these places.” In its fifth year, the folk and contemporary music festival will cover distances as far as Koah, just west of Cairns, all the way down to Tasmania. “It’s a great concept where some of these halls don’t get used as frequently as they used to,” Courtney said. “They used to be the centre of the town, so to get live music again is really great for the communities. We’ve been made very welcome and people always say, ‘Thank you for coming’. “It’s quite a social event and we often stay at the halls afterwards and chat with the people and they tell us about the town and we tell them about the tours. It is a very special and social event.” American folk raconteur Vance Gilbert and acclaimed Australian singer-songwriter Liz Stringer will join the festival, playing 20 community halls across Queensland and New South Wales. “It was such a joy to be part of the Festival of Small Halls last year,” said Liz. “In Tasmania

Wauchope Hall will be a hive of activity on November 26 for example they were experiencing almost unprecedented numbers of bushfires (just like the Mid North Coast) and we were welcomed by all seven communities with open arms and all of the energy we put into the shows was returned in spades by warm and enthusiastic audiences. Wind fails to deliver THE sixth race of the spring series at the Port Macquarie Sailing Club was held on Sunday with a promising north-easter that failed to deliver. There was a handicap start and the first lap was great sailing, but as scattered little storm clouds moved through, great calm patches developed over the course. This allowed the faster boats that started later a chance to catch up as the slower boats were often becalmed. The only help was that the run-in tide wasn’t particularly strong. This was evident in the catamarans, where even though Frank O’Rourke on Dino (pictured below) started 20 minutes after the first boats, he still won on both yardstick and handicap, with large gaps to Tony Kuhn on Stella, Dave Winter on Spica, and Kelly Miller on Hummer. Rob Barwick on Drift retired after his boat lived up to its name when the breeze died. The monohulls also had the same order on yardstick and handicap. Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant were first, followed by Simon Gandy and Tom in Voyager, Stuart Symons and Eric Edge in Big Bang, Phil and Blake Lillehagen in Elmo, Steve Bohlsen in Splash Dance, and Elsa Gandy and Caitlyn Hicks in Flying Fish. Next Saturday is the ‘Queen of the Lake’ marathon at Queens Lake Sailing Club starting at Midday. Next Sunday is the third round of the sprint series and Dave Winter is rostered on duty. We are also having a visit from our representative from Australian Sailing.
were Steve Newman, Mark Arndell and Kevin Pampling. Good to see Mark getting back into the game. Friday’s nominated pairs once again saw 10 teams take to the greens. The winners with a +17 were Alan Schroder and Tim Renshall while the runners-up, on a countback of ends, with +3 were Brien Clarke and John Lewis. Saturday we had the semi-finals of the Club Triples Championship with Phil Saville, Rick Simpson and Jeff Purdy defeating Andrew Hackney, Ian Hackney and Peter McDonald 1910. Peter Ostler, Paul Harrison and Steve Latham came out on top against Ken Ansley, Bill Reid and Tim Renshall 22-16. The final on Sunday turned out to be a very much one-sided affair with Steve’s team holding off Jeff’s side 26-9. Congratulations to the winners and the others can get ready to saddle up again next year. This week we have the usual Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs at 1pm (single entries will also be accepted) and Wednesday afternoon single-entry club select triples, also at 1pm. Keep in mind the popular Wednesday Twilight Triples kick off around 6pm.Visitors are always most welcome and encouraged to register for both of these events. The entry sheet is also now up for our very popular Pig Day which will be held on November 18. There is also a sheet up for those players wishing to nominate for the pennant teams next year, so please support your club and register. Saturday at 1pm will be the semi-finals of the Club Mixed Pairs Championship with Adolf Giacovani to play Anne Steel and Ross Laurie to play Paul Harrison. The final will be held on Sunday morning at 9am, so get on down both days and support the players and enjoy some good bowls. The Travelling Bowlers are off to the Westport Club on Sunday morning so please see the notice board for details. Our thoughts are with Eddie Jones and his family as he recovers in Wauchope Hospital.
