Pool stays afloat By BARBARA DYER THE push for a tidal ocean pool at Port Macquarie is being kept afloat with the group behind the campaign having just been registered as a not-forprofit-charity with ACNC (Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission). “Now we’re trying for deductible gift recipient status, but it’s a tough road,” says Kathryn Butler who has been behind the push for the past two years to build a tidal pool. And it has been a relentless, sometimes disheartening task to keep up the pressure on the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to acknowledge that an ocean pool would be welcomed by thousands of residents and used by thousands more visitors to the region. “This ACNC approval is a huge step forward in our fight,” says Ms Butler. • Continued Page 3

Push for a tidal pool boosted

Did you hear the one how Bato...? Well, you will this Sunday HE was a local, a larrikin and an all-round good bloke – and his mates refuse to allow his memory to fade. That’s why this Sunday the Kew Country Club will be holding the 14th annual Ian Barbato ‘Bato’ Memorial Golf Day. “Ian was just one of those sorts of people who everyone knew in town,” said Simon Hancox, organiser of the event. “We all knew his little Suzuki truck he would drive around in and people would wave at him. He was a bit of a larrikin too and that’s why people liked him. Anyone who met him left with a smile on their face.” Up to 120 players will be coming together on the fairways and greens to do what ‘Bato’ did best – make people happy and to help out those less fortunate. Ian Barbato was a well-known community icon who passed away suddenly in 2004. Ian loved to combine a good yarn with an adventure on the golf course and so every year since in his honour, many of his friends and family gather at Kew to do the same and remember the great man. “Ian owned a restaurant at North Haven called The Haven Reef for many years,” Simon said. “He was also a pretty good golfer down at Kew Country Club and many people knew him from that. “I knew Ian through family as our parents are friends. His son Simon and I are best mates. We were even best men at each other’s wedding. Golfing is something that has been apart of his family for a long time so it’s important for us to carry on this memorial day.” The event is not only a great day out for Ian’s family, friends, and golfers, but it also raises money for local charity Riding for the Disabled Association.

A caricature of the late Ian ‘Bato’ Barbato “Throughout the years we have raised over $24,000 for Riding for the Disabled,” said Simon. “Ian was a really well identified community member and so we wanted to help a local based charity that assists local kids. Over the years we have added in extra novelty games and raffles that have helped us raise more money for this organisation. “A couple of weeks ago we already had 25 groups booked, which is 100 people, so I would expect to reach 120 people, if not exceeding it. Hopefully we can raise around $3,500 to $4000 from this event.” The Ian Barbato “Bato” Memorial Golf Day will kick off on Sunday August 5 from 7.30am. To get involved, call the Kew Country Club on 02 6559 4596. The cost is $30 per player and includes a barbecue breakfast from 7am. Pre-booked teams are asked to arrive from 6.45am to complete registration and collect their

playing cards and to have a bite to eat before play commences. Along with the four-man ambrose competition, there will also be a longest drive competition with a twist. Players may only use the extremely long club provided along with some other novelty events along the way. Following the golfing festivities, there will be a presentation in the clubhouse with a raffle. Prizes have been kindly donated by PRDnationwide Laurieton, Laurieton United Servicemans Club, T-Bones meats, Garels Golf, Dollar Savers Hardware, Laurieton Cellars Local Liquor, Camden Haven’s Local Lawyer, Kendall Services & Citizens Club, Laurieton Hotel and the Kew Country Club. For more information, contact Simon Hancox on 0423 941 136 or to book in your team, contact the Kew Country Club on 02 6559 4596.

• From Page 1 “Officially we are a not-for-profit organisation and have an ABN and tax file number; it’s like watching a baby grow.” Ms Butler admits it’s been two steps forward and one step back following a backflip by councillors who, after voting 6-1 in April in favour of a feasibility study, changed their minds just a month later voting 6-3 against. “Some 18,000 signatures supporting the study counted for nothing with Councillor Rob Turner dead set against it.” Ms Butler says that she is not ready to quit the campaign she and a committee have led for two years, adding the recent support from ACNC only strengthened their resolve as funds donated would be tax deductible. “If I didn’t believe in my heart that Port Macquarie would eventually get an ocean pool, I would walk away from this,” she said. “Leslie Williams is supportive but says her hands are tied unless we have council on board. “Now we are trying to work our way around council but it’s a rougher, rockier road.” “We have been advised by Cr Turner to seek advice from the State government because the pool would be sited on Crown Land,” she said. “But we have correspondence from both our state and federal representatives telling us that requests for funding have to come from the council.” Ms Butler said that unlike many issues which often divided community, there were more supporters than detractors for the building of a tidal pool. She said if all those who supported the pool donated just a couple of dollars, they would not need to go ‘cap in hand’ asking for government funding. “The pool is a priority for mayor Peta Pinson and was for Cr Turner when he was running for mayor. But that has now changed,” said Ms Butler. “We are not asking for any funding from council, though that would be welcome. We just want support in writing to the state government.” Meanwhile the committee is looking for new members and, in particular, an experienced treasurer. Send details to pmqtpc7@gmail.com

Library funding concern

TAKING money away from our local libraries is never OK, but that’s what the NSW Liberals and Nationals have done. In this year’s budget the Liberals and Nationals slashed more than $5 million in funding from our wonderful public libraries. It’s now the lowest level of funding in twenty years. They also wiped out the entire grants program that was especially dedicated to build public library infrastructure across NSW. Instead the NSW Liberals and Nationals are now making regional arts, culture and heritage

projects compete against libraries through their regional cultural fund. That’s just robbing Peter to pay Paul. The next State Labor Government will double funding for public libraries, including an ongoing Public Library Infrastructure Fund of $6.25 million every year. We understand how important local libraries are to every community across NSW and we’re prepared to pay to support them. Peter Primrose MLC Shadow Minister for Local Government

Submissions needed now for NSW NDIS inquiry WHILST the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has been rolling out across NSW, the Berejiklian/Barilaro government has been privatising all public sector disability services, including HomeCare and group homes. Now, the NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care (ADHC) no-longer exists. People with disabilities, their families, carers and advocates, have to navigate an entirely new disability services landscape – and it’s tough. So, the NSW Labor Opposition has secured a

Parliamentary Inquiry into the implementation of the NDIS and the provision of disability services across NSW. Please help us make the NDIS work for everyone by making a submission to the inquiry before 9 August. IS it just me? Everywhere I turn, no matter where I look, it seems the world has been turned inside out, upside down and completely bum-about-face! The things that should matter, don’t and the more ridiculous something is, the more support it seems to get. In case you’re not getting my drift, here’s some examples of what I mean, from the last few months. In June, our federal politicians took a self-approved pay rise – as one of their employers, I don’t remember being asked if I was okay with that – and just to add a bit of salt to the wounds - our hospitality, retail and shift workers have lost their penalty rates for working nights, split shifts and weekends. Seems fair, said no one ever. Tax reforms announced in May, in my humble opinion, has virtually secured government aided, tax avoidance for the major corporations and probably the politicians. Meanwhile Jane Citizen and Joe Blow are frantically trying to make ends meet and hoping for the possible tax savings of $1000 p.a. on their tax bill. As a dual income family – woohoo! Big bloody deal! The retirement age is being lifted to 70 years of age – unless you’re a politician or the head of a corporation in this country – most of us won’t get to enjoy any type of retirement because we’re all going to be too exhausted from maintaining our dual incomes so we can save $1000 p.a. on our tax bill. There’s nothing like having the goal posts moved just as you’re kicking some goals and seeing a plan coming together. It’s a real boost for the morale of the nation. NOT! NSW State government is introducing tougher drug driving laws – with the inclusion of prescription medications e.g. cold and flu tablets, tablets containing codeine, antidepressants and the like. Now I get that we are trying to keep the road toll down for accidents etc., but I think we could end up with a little bit of a problem. Firstly, I don’t know many people

who are not taking some sort of prescription medication these days, be it for depression, anxiety, pain relief, heart conditions and all manner of inflictions, diseases and ailments, especially the 40+ bracket. Taking a stab in the dark, about 55% of the population in the Hastings and Macleay (100,000 combined) would be over 40 and of those probably 75% will be taking some form of prescription medication, daily. Let’s say around 40-45,000 people in our region alone. Wow! That’s a big chunk of our local population and guess what? They’ll all be needing to get to work - until they’re 70! It just gets better, doesn’t it? Not only are we expected to work longer, in order to get ourselves to work without being booked for drug driving charges, it’s no drugs or find another mode of transport. As you can be charged for DUI on a pushbike and riding a horse, we may have to resort back to the shanks pony if we want to partake in the evil sin of pain relief and keep our licenses and jobs. Perhaps if the law had been brought in earlier the state government could have saved the country a fortune on the highway upgrades? It stands to reason, less capable drivers, less vehicles on the roads. I reckon they’ll need that money and more in the kitty for the heap of people who throw in the towel and go on a disability pension, when pain relief becomes more important than driving to work and slaving their guts out till they’re 70. Welcome to the lucky country.

Holistic farming growth spurt go into “landWeplanning, starting with the big picture like the climate, topography and we work our way down to fencing.

MANY farmers globally are now turning to a holistic approach to their businesses and soon locals can find out why and how. The Holistic Management Course will be held in Wauchope in October and focuses on making sound social, environmental, and financial decisions. “When you drive around Australia, every piece of land you see is a result of human decision, and a lot of it isn’t looking good,” said Brian Wehlburg, Certified Educator in Holistic Management. “Agriculture and farming is hugely complex.” Participants will come away from the course with a holistic context for themselves and their business and family, a business holistic financial plan, and a property holistic grazing plan, as well as a positive outlook and new ideas to achieve their goals. “We focus on how to use animals as a positive tool to make changes to the environment,” said Brian. “We have quite a big section on environmental monitoring, because most people only pick up those signs that the environment is degrading way too late, before they start making changes. “We have a component on financial planning including steps into holistic financial planning which is not just about a business, but about a person’s whole life. “We go into land planning, starting with the big picture like the climate, topography and we work our way down to fencing. A lot of farmers start with fencing and it creates conflict. “We look at time management because everyone seems to be time poor. So we help them manage their time better. “And lastly we help people with some communication tools. To be successful it’s got to be that way, we have to look at everything–

Participants at a recent holistic farming management course monitor pasture holistically, financially, our time, etc. There are lots of people making money, but destroying the environment, or they are making money and having bad relationships within the family or the community.” Brian has already run four courses locally and says there is a huge interest for a change towards holistic farming. “There’s a huge shift towards holistic

farming,” he said. “The grazing and livestock industry is the most popular. But the growth in farmers markets in the last ten years is huge; in America there has been a 74% increase in the last two years in farmers markets equities. “You just drive up and down the coast here and you can see the amount of farmers markets, which is from consumers wanting to know where and how their food is produced.

“There’s a big push from the communities. 86% of Australians are now urban and so a lot of them have lost connection with who produces their food. The farmers markets have created a really neat avenue for that.” The four two-day sessions run three to four weeks apart and takes place on October 3-4 from 9am-4.30pm. The location of the course is yet to be decided, but will most likely take place at the Wauchope Golf Club or a local organic farm. There are only 18 spots available so get in quick. To book a spot contact Brian from the Inside Outside Management on 0408 704 431 or brian@insideoutsidemgt.com.au For more information visit http://www. insideoutsidemgt.com.au

Sculptures to trace gaol’s history

For the children, “Sculpture in the Gaol will be an interactive experience with places where they can draw and make sculptures

Left and below: Some of the entries in last year’s Sculpture in the Gaol at historic Trial Bay Gaol at South West Rocks

By SUE PATERICK THIS year’s theme for the 10th Sculpture in the Gaol at historic Trial Bay Gaol at South West Rocks this August will celebrate 100 years since a German Internment Camp closed there in 1918. When World War I broke out in 1914 all German subjects living in Australia were declared enemy aliens so over 5000 men, women and children were detained. Some men ended up at Trial Bay Gaol and while life was restricted and supplies limited at first, they were allowed to grow their own vegetables and catch fish. To alleviate feelings of isolation after being separated from their families and to relieve the monotony of forced confinement, these internees transformed the gaol into a cultural hub. It had two choral societies, a symphony orchestra, its own paper and a 280-seat theatre where 56 plays were performed in 1917. Sport and leisure activities were big too with sporting clubs organising, boxing, bowling, chess, tennis and nine-pin bowling. They also ran science, arts, literature, finance, management and language programs. Through their own efforts, life for the German internees was a far cry from those of the Gaol’s first inmates. Trial Bay Gaol was built as an experimental public-works prison in the late 1800s so its inmates could build a break wall to make the sheltered bay a safe haven for shipping. Given coastal shipping was the main means of transport in those days, the NSW Government had to act when 90 ships were sunk and 243 people drowned between 1863 and 1866. However, the scheme was a failure because the break wall was hard to maintain and often washed away. The German Internment Camp at Trial Bay Gaol closed in July 1918 just before the end of WWI. Before they left, the internees built a monument on the hill above Laggers Point in

memory of their five comrades who died. Three of these internees were buried there under the cairn site. One of the Gaol’s German internees, Kurt Wiese, lived a long and productive life, becoming a successful illustrator of both his own children’s books and those of other writers. He decorated all the programs for the Gaol’s plays and one of his most famous illustrations in later life was Bambi. So this year’s theme for Sculpture in the Gaol is a great way to honour the artistic nature of the German internees who once called Trial Bay home. In fact, one of the cells is devoted to an interactive interpretation of Kurt Wiese’s work by artist Sandra Murphy. There are over 80 exhibits this year and organisers are delighted to share the beautiful sculptures and the artists’ creativity. About 200 Dunghutti community members have made a sculptural installation for the event titled Nganhang Nyinda - meaning Me You,

and children from Dalaigur Pre-School have painstakingly worked alongside family to create hundreds of clay nests and eggs. These nests and eggs will be laid inside a bark canoe hand-made by an Elder at Dalaigur, who engaged with Dunghutti Men’s Work. Many local schools have also made sculptures for the event and artists are both local and from far-flung places like Brisbane, Sydney, Taree and Walcha. There will also be an Escapee Trail through the CBD of seaside South West Rocks where some wonderful artworks await discovery. For the children, Sculpture in the Gaol will be an interactive experience with places where they can draw and make sculptures. At the Children’s Craft Activity section they can make a block print for a comfort quilt that will be given to children who have experienced child protection issues. When Sculpture in the Gaol opens on Gala Day on Sunday August 5 the entry fee will be just $2 per person.

The fun will kick off with a Welcome to Country at 11am and Kempsey Mayor Liz Campbell will launch Sculpture in the Gaol for 2018. At midday there will be storytelling and we will learn about the magnificent canoe. A smoking ceremony will follow, then a walk up to the German Monument will take place to honour the German internees who died at Trial Bay. There will also be historic talks and a behind the scenes museum tour showcasing some of its internationally-significant collection. Gala Day will end at 3pm with a Flag Closing ceremony by the Navy Cadets to commemorate the internees and their guards leaving Trial Bay Gaol a century ago. Alex Robinson from the local RSL Club will then give a speech. Over 7000 visitors enjoyed this fabulous month-long event in 2017 so come along this year and wander through these atmospheric ruins and vote for your favourite artist and artwork. Sculpture in the Gaol ends on Saturday, September 1, when the winning artists will be announced. Apart from Gala Day when entry is $2 per person, entry to the Gaol is $8 for a concession and children, $11 for adults or $30 for a family. For more information go to www. sculptureinthegaol.com.au

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson It’s hard to believe that it’s 12 months since I became Mayor, and what an exciting and interesting period it has been. The time has really flown by, and I have learnt so much, developed new skills, grown personally and really enjoyed getting to know our community on a different level. Being Mayor is an extremely diverse leadership role, with no two days ever being the same which I love … it really does keep me on my toes. Whether it’s making important decisions with my fellow Councillors on matters that impact our community, being out and about listening to your ideas and concerns, advocating for positive change, or performing official duties such as welcoming new Australian citizens, I am always focussed on delivering the best I can … every single day.

One of the things that’s really impressed me is how community focussed Council are, and there are so many of our staff that have a real passion for community engagement. I’ve been involved in lots of community pop-ups, events and community meetings that help us understand what you are thinking, and give you the opportunity to have your say. Relationships to me are key, not only within our local community but it is really important that we continue to build strong relationships with our Federal and State Members. The feedback that I receive is that we are working well together, and I will continue to place a high focus in this area, for the greater benefit of our community. Catering for our growing community, whilst protecting everything thing that is great about living in our little slice of paradise is particularly important. We all want to build our community responsibly, look after our pristine local

pmhc.nsw.gov.au environment and ensure that our children, their children and the many generations to come can enjoy what we have today. We are already experiencing growing pains, and I’ll be looking closely at how we’re going to provide new housing, community facilities, cultural experiences and jobs. Getting around efficiently and safely is also of real importance, with roads & transport, pedestrian and parking improvements areas you’ve clearly highlighted to me, and I’ll be working particularly hard in this area. I really want to thank everyone who has supported, encouraged and embraced me since becoming Mayor. It’s been a great year, and I’m really looking forward to continuing my learning, connecting with our community and ensuring we remain the best place in Australia to live. Until next week, Peta

Regional business optimism By SUE PATERICK

We are fortunate “that there is

positive sentiment in business within the five key catchment areas of the valley, particularly in tourism and trades

A COMMONWEALTH Bank report released recently showed that while almost 50 per cent of all regional businesses could see opportunities for growth, it acknowledged there could also be some difficulties to overcome. Launched on July 18, the Regional Business Insights report provided a snapshot of regional businesses in Australia and the opportunities and challenges these businesses were facing. On the up side CommBank Executive General Manager for Regional and Agribusiness Banking, Grant Cairns, said businesses cited strong markets, growing populations and improving infrastructure as underpinning the potential to expand. “Australia’s growing population, Asian demand for our high-quality food and consumer products and the increase in infrastructure spending are underpinning optimism in regional Australia,” he said. “And this is creating a knock-on effect of new openings for a range of industries.” According to Mr Cairns, the first step towards innovation and success was clarity around business challenges and opportunities. “While nearly half of all regional businesses saw the potential to grow, one in five thought there was no opportunity or were unsure of what the opportunity might be,” he said. “The research suggests regional Australia could achieve even better results with greater clarity around how to achieve meaningful growth.” Mr Cairns believed regional businesses tended to think broadly about potential openings and had much sharper insight when it came to challenges. The main challenges cited in the report were

Macleay Valley Chamber President and Lending Specialist with Regional Finance Solutions, Gary Scott, thought there was a positive sentiment in the local business sector but acknowledged some could face challenges. competition - particularly from online shopping, input costs and red-tape. Mr Cairns thought online business was a double-edged sword in regional Australia and while it opened up the potential to trade outside local boundaries, it also gave competitors greater access to regional communities. “And that’s a significant challenge for many

regional businesses,” he added. Macleay Valley Business Chamber President, Gary Scott, said their own research through the NSW Business Chamber indicated the retail sector in most regional areas was facing challenges and Kempsey was no exception. “We are fortunate that there is positive sentiment in business within the five key

catchment areas of the valley, particularly in tourism and trades,” he said. Mr Scott, also a Lending Specialist with Regional Finance Solutions, pointed out several positive comments in a business study carried out last year on the effects of the Pacific Highway bypass. Dr Bruno Parolin’s report stated that based on the surveys undertaken, Kempsey had a bright future and that there was indeed life after the bypass. The report also said that Kempsey would continue to play a role as an important midjourney service centre serving the needs of motorists travelling along the Pacific Highway. Dr Parolin also pointed out that because of proactive measures by Kempsey Shire Council and the initiatives of businesses, Kempsey had the potential to become a major destination for visitors.

Community L nks

with Robbie Lloyd

Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.

Distress at work MOST of us have met people on-the-job who have been feeling overwhelmed by life, or experienced the sudden loss of a family member or pet. We know that ‘stuff happens’ and people get upset. But how do you handle supporting such vulnerable people in their moment of need? It’s actually a very sensitive and important moment to come up with a sensible response. Just saying ‘There! There! You’ll get over it’, or ‘imagine if you were living in the Baghdad’ or some such answer, can just make things worse. That’ why the college is offering a special program called Accidental Counsellor right now. It’s for all those workers who feel like they need to know how to handle supporting other people when they’re suffering, but they know they’re not professional counsellors. For example, a recent study at Wollongong University showed that hairdressers are informal counsellors for many clients. They surveyed 130 hairdressers and found that hairdressers spent 43 per cent of their time discussing problems of moderate to serious severity with their customers. These included physical health issues, job/workplace problems, children, intimate relationships, anxiety and depression. This Accidental Counsellor training will teach you an easily understandable and practical framework for effective in-themoment support for vulnerable people. You’ll get to try out some key techniques in a safe and supportive environment. And our educator Margaret Bailitis is a qualified psychotherapist and a Lecturer in Holistic Counselling. Farmers need our help now IN parts of Australia, particularly in some parts of inland Australia, we are seeing the impact of the drought. I thought it was worth highlighting some of the drought measures that have been announced. Farmers wishing to know more about Farm Household Allowance eligibility should see their local Rural Financial Counsellor or call the Department of Human Services Farmer Assistance Hotline on 13 23 16. Farm Household Allowance: launched July 2014; more than $230 million invested by the Federal Coalition Government to help more than 7,900 farmers. Rural Financial Counselling Service: Some 130 counsellors helping 4500 people a year. Pests and weeds: Some $25.8 million over four years from 2015–16. This is in addition to the $50 million announced as part of the Agriculture Competitiveness White Paper to support established pests and weeds nationally. An additional $15 million has been committed to make sure wild dogs and pests don’t decimate lambing in drought-affected parts of NSW. Farm Liaison Officer: Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud recently announced this position to aid farmers in Qld and NSW. Regional Investment Corporation: will deliver nationally-consistent loans including for farmers

in drought. Banking: The Coalition doubled the amount farmers could set aside from their taxable income. Tax: Accelerated depreciation for new water infrastructure, fodder infrastructure and fencing to help farmers prepare for drought, assist with cash flow and encourage on-farm investment. Drought-affected taxpayers who need support with tax debts can ring the ATO on 131 142. Concessional Loans: More than $834 million in concessional loans have been approved. Mental health: Aussie Helpers received another $1 million recently during the Prime Minister’s drought tour for an innovative counselling service accessed via SMS. State Government Package: Freight and fodder subsidies are the responsibility of state governments.

CHARITIES Benefit From Return and Earn Reverse Vending Machines: With our area now having four Reverse Vending Machines, local charities can also benefit financially by nominating to be a donation partner. Every reverse vending machine kiosk has four options for donation when people return their drink containers. One of these donation partners can be a not-for-profit community group from our local area. The four donation partners change every three months. Suggestions for local community groups to be considered include sporting groups, Scouts, Girl Guides, Government and non-Government schools, music clubs and drama groups. The list of donation partners changes on August 27 and then November 26. If your not-for-profit group would like to be considered, contact my office on 65840977. Women’s Health Week: Women’s Health Week (September 3 to 7, 2018) is an opportunity for women, workplaces and communities to take the time to access and share evidence-based information that is aimed at promoting good health in ways that support sustained behaviour change. Truce first ‘called’ in 867

TRUCE a long time ago (and still is) represented a cessation of hostilities between two armies. The term has broadened so it now represents a cessation of hostilities between two opposing forces – say a tiff between two groups (tiff is a quarrel). The word truce goes back at least to 867. It was spelt in various forms such as trewes, even trieux. Historically, the word is simply the plural of the noun version of true. In old English this was treow, or trewe, which meant faith or pledge, or friendship. Eventually the singular disappeared. Then it represented a suspension of hostilities for a specified period between two armies at war, even combatants in a private feud. The word represented faithfulness. Then it represented an unlimited period. Then it followed an order by the church during certain days and seasons in medieval times. In the middle ages a suspension was decreed by the church for certain seasons, such as advent and lent. In 1067, hostilities between Saturday night and Monday morning were forbidden. It was only partly effective and was eventually superseded by the King’s Peace. Then it followed a truce in a sporting contest.

my

LAURIE BARBER

Shakespeare had a go at it when he said in a Comedy of Errors “Keep then faire league and truce with thy true bed”. N Bacon said in District Governments England: “The King foresaw the storm and thought it safest to cry truce with the people”. Websters described truce as freedom from trouble or pain, in addition to a cessation of hostilities. Macquarie describes truce as an agreement to stop trouble and pain. During World War 1, on December 24, 1914, there was an unofficial ceasefire on the western front for Christmas. This was an unofficial truce. No official treaty was signed, and the war resumed after a few days. Collins described truce as an agreement between two groups of people to stop fighting. On November 29, 1952, the newly elected US

Vice-president Dwight D Eisenhower went to Korea to learn what might end the Korean War. The battle line was drawn approximately at the 38th Parallel. On January 15, 1973, President Richard Nixon of the USA ordered a ceasefire of the aerial bombings in North Vietnam. These are examples of truces, some that ended in ceasefires. There were many of them. An armistice is a formal agreement of warring parties to stop fighting. It is not necessarily the end of a war, since it may constitute only a cessation of hostilities while an attempt is made to negotiate a lasting peace. It is derived from the Latin arma meaning “arms” (as in weapons) and stitium, meaning “a stopping”. An armistice is a modus vivendi and is not the same as a peace treaty, which may take months or even years to agree on. The 1953 Korean war armistice agreement is a major example of an armistice which has not been followed by a peace treaty. Armistice is also different from a truce or ceasefire, which refer to a temporary cessation of hostilities for an agreed limited time or within a limited area. A truce may be needed in order to negotiate an armistice. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midoast.com.au

Fun, fitness with your best friend GRAB your best friend and head to the Coopernook State Forest for some fun fitness. The Dirty Dog Tail Run is back on August 19 for the third year and hundreds of dog-lovers will be getting together for an adventurous day out. “It’s not competitive at all, it’s about getting people outdoors with their dogs,” said Danielle Donnelly, organiser of the event. “It’s a real social thing too. We get around 150 people come along for the race and afterwards many of them will stick around hours after for a barbecue and a chat with other dog owners.” This year two different courses will be offered – an 8.5km run, and a shorter 4km course, both including lots of interesting forest smells, muddy spots, and obstacles. “My background is in events and I had been organizing events for years, but found that there weren’t many events that you could take your dogs to,” explains Danielle. “I’ve got a Golden Retriever and a Border Collie and I wanted to do events with them so I created the Dirty Dog Tail Run. I also wanted to take the event into the forest and away from the usual dog parks. Another reason I started the event was to also raise funds for animal welfare.” There will be plenty of fun for the hounds and their humans too, such as a barbecue,

Above: The Dirty Dog Tail Run is is designed specifically for dogs. Below: There will be plenty of fun activities. games, a pooch smooch booth, dog beer drinking competition, and the ‘Walk of Terror’, which will test the willpower of the strongest pets. Danielle says there will be dogs of all sizes, shapes, and backgrounds attending. “There will be Dachshunds, tiny little Chihuahuas, big Great Danes, rescue dogs, and much more,” Danielle said. “I designed the whole event around the dogs – every detail of the event has been created from the perspective of what a dog would enjoy. “Most of all it’s about celebrating the bond between dogs and their owners, and giving them the chance to enjoy a great day out together.” The event has been partnered with the NSW State Forest. “We’ve been able to educate people on State Forests as dog friendly spaces, which most

their volunteers in rehabilitation and rehoming an incredible 90 animals each year, with that number growing. The Dirty Dog Tail Race takes place on Sunday August 19 from 9am in the Coopernook State Forest, north of Taree, with races taking place in half hour segments. Every dog must be on a lead. Entry is $60 for the 8.5km race and $40 for the 4km race. The Dirty Dog Tail Run is proudly sponsored by NSW State Forests, Love ‘em, Rufus & Coco, Koly’s Pet Treats and BeerDog’s Brewhouse. Foresters warn that we must learn from Greek tragedy THE Federal and State Governments must learn from the Greek fire tragedy before we experience another Black Saturday bushfire in Australia. That is the stark warning from the Institute of Foresters of Australia. Bob Gordon, National President of the Institute, said: “‘We have experienced similar tragedies to the unfortunate Greek community. We have some understanding of what they are feeling at present and our hearts reach out to them in their time of sorrow. “The Institute of Foresters of Australia stands ready to help if the Australian Government offers to aid Greece. Our members include people with high levels of professional knowledge and experience to guide the Greek authorities towards a better approach to forest fire management.” Bob Gordon notes similarities between ineffective fire management in Greece and the path being followed by Australian politicians and fire agency leaders: “The two most disastrous fires, in the past 60 years, have

occurred since Greece removed forest fire suppression responsibilities from the Forest Service and handed them to the Hellenic Fire Service (the para-military organisation that carries the responsibility for urban firefighting) in 1998. “It makes sense to use people who understand the rural and forest environment for forest fire suppression. That includes foresters working with locals who understand the bush and fire behaviour. “We will have fewer catastrophic forest fires if we properly manage the forested estate on both public and private land. “It is easy to blame climate change, but we know that successful suppression of ‘easy bushfires’, and not conducting large scale low intensity prescribed burns in public and private forests, leads to forest fuel accumulation. The more fuel available for a fire to burn, the harder it is to extinguish and the more damage it can do.”

Australian politicians have been warned to take heed of the harsh lessons from Greece

Brief window for ‘burn-off’ By SUE PATERICK

SMOKE shrouded the Macleay Valley at times during the past week due to hazard reduction burns, but with months of dry weather predicated it is a necessary requirement of Australian life. Both the National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) and the Rural Fire Service (RFS) were taking advantage of the fine, dry and still weather to ignite bushland as a protection against bush fires this summer. The NPWS were burning in the McCoys Creek area west of Kempsey last week and Yarrahapinni the week before.

The RFS performed a number of hazard reduction burns at Collombatti, Eungai Creek and Stuarts Point over the weekend. Approximately 60 RFS members took part in the hazard reduction operations and additional crew assisted NPWS conduct a hazard reduction burn north of Valla Beach. According to RFS Lower North Coast Zone Manager Superintendent Lachlann Ison, hazard reduction plays a vital role in helping to reduce the intensity of bush fires. He stressed that it was important to take advantage of suitable weather conditions as soon as they occurred. “Each year only a small window of

opportunity exists where weather conditions are conducive to controlled burns,” he said. “For a hazard reduction burn to be successful, we require the right wind and temperature conditions as well as ground fuels to be sufficiently dry.” He advised residents in affected areas of hazard reduction burns to take appropriate precautions, such as keeping doors and windows closed, removing washing from clothes lines and making sure pets were in a protected area. Motorists in the area should also slow down and take care if driving through smoke, keep the windows closed, switch the car air-conditioner to recirculated air mode and turn on their

headlights. “It’s a very bust time of the year and undoubtedly will get even busier,” Superintendent Ison said. For more information go to Fires Near Me at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fires-nearme While the ABC weather map showed dry conditions would cover much of Australia over the coming months, it looked like the Mid North and North coasts might get a bit of rain. Let us all hope so but in case it stays dry now is the time to clean up around the house and property so you can be prepared to act and survive a bush fire.

Bobbi’s turn in spotlight ONE local cowgirl is riding her way to the top. 13-year-old Bobbi Ward from Kundabung, near Kempsey, recently competed in the biggest rodeo in Australia and came out on top. “Bobbi won all-round cowgirl at the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft Rodeo Association rodeo in Mareeba (Far North Qld),” said Bobbi’s father Dean Ward. “She competed in the 11-14-year-old Junior Barrel Race and the under 18 Breakaway Roping and finished second in the roping and won the barrel race.” Bobbi’s 10-year-old brother Levi is usually the one taking the spotlight in rodeo, but this time it’s Bobbi’s turn. “Levi is over in America at the moment about to compete in rodeos, but Bobbi is keeping busy here with rodeos,” said Mr Ward. “The Mareeba rodeo is a massive rodeo which goes for three days. Bobbi was very overwhelmed actually because it was the first time she has competed in the under 18 roping so she was very happy when she caught a calf, let alone finishing second out of 36 kids. “Roping is not an easy thing to do, you don’t often see young kids doing it. It’s also a massive age group with kids 8-18 competing. She’s very proud of herself. You can’t wipe the smile off her face.” Bobbi, who is currently in year 7 at Westport Primary School, has big plans for her future and hopes to make something out of rodeo. “She just loves rodeo,” Mr Ward said. “She is leading the 11-14 Australian title at the

13-year-old Bobbi Ward in action in the barrel race moment, so she’s right up there with the best. We travel all around the country to make sure the kids get to compete in as many rodeos as they can, sometimes as far as Perth.” One thing is for sure, rodeo has a place for young girls like Bobbi. “There is definitely equal opportunity in rodeo,” said Mr Ward. “There are many girls like Bobbi who compete, and also many women who go on to compete later in their life. “Once the girls turn 18 there are so many

different competitions they can compete in and there are big prize money events. There’s definitely a future for women in rodeo.” The family’s current sponsors are Tumblegum Bakehouse, Mavin Truck Centre, RedPoint, NRMA Kempsey, Kempsey Stock and Land, Fishers Asphalt, Gulf Western Oils, and Hooked Rodeo Hardwear To sponsor Levi, Bobbi, or their sister Franki who also competes, contact Dean Ward on 0407 996 969.

continue at about $40. You can’t add that to the cost of power and have prices come down. It is obvious they could only go up. The government wants to end the subsidies for renewables that are pushing our power prices higher. That is a central element of our plan to get them coming down. The government will soon meet state and territory governments to get their approval for the plan. We have to have their unanimous support to make it work. Victoria, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory are unlikely to provide that support. The federal opposition also opposes it. If the Labor states and territories do not come on board that will cost Australian families dearly.

Cut to power prices under threat THE government’s bid to cut power prices for families and businesses on the Mid North Coast is under threat from our political opponents. They say our National Energy Guarantee (NEG), which could save you up to $550 a year, does not focus enough on renewable energy. We reject that. The government has signed an international agreement to cut our emissions by 26% by 2030. Our energy boffins expect we will beat that target. The cost of building renewables is coming down and more will be built even without subsidies. Emissions are likely to come down closer to 30% and perhaps more under our plan. That is a big contribution to emissions reduction - while our plan also has elements to

ensure the lights stay on. Our opponents want a 45% reduction in emissions in the same timeframe. That means they will have to provide subsidies for wind and solar projects to make sure enough are built to meet their big target. Those subsidies could add $80 or more to the wholesale price of a Megawatt hour of power. That could double the wholesale price for much of the time. Subsidies for roof top solar would also

footytips

Also-rans are the concern Sydney): What a blockbuster! This is all about the Rabbits. After getting to the top of the ladder they have plateaued in recent weeks. This will be a real litmus test of how they are travelling and how genuine they are as a GF contender. The Storm just keep winning and won’t have an off week. They smashed the Raiders last weekend and are in ‘take-noprisoners’ mode. The Rabbits could shake Melbourne’s invincibility aura if they are really on their game. However form says Storm. Your Local Independent tips: Storm Dragons v Warriors (Saturday, August 4, 3pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong): Another great finals indicator. Both teams were far from where they want to be last weekend. The Warriors were terrible when whacked by the Titans and the Dragons could not get up for their crucial game against the Roosters. A solid win here could put either side back on the finals tracks. The Warriors have the extra pressure of falling out of the eight if their ordinary form continues over the next few weeks. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Eels v Titans (Saturday, August 4, 5.30pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): This will be interesting for two teams out of the finals race. The Titans were excellent last weekend against the Warriors. Their 36-12 win over a team needing to win to push their finals claims, was entertaining. But it would have also had their fans shaking their heads. Where was this over the past several weeks? The Eels just want this season to end. Your Local Independent tips:

Titans Roosters v Cowboys (Saturday, August 4, 7.35pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Another game where a top side (Roosters) can’t afford to take their eye off the prize. The Cows finally came back into the winner’s circle last weekend and have the lineup to trouble any side. However it is doubtful they can mentally bridge this gap. The Roosters are firming as a GF contender, especially with their powerful run home over the Dragons last weekend. Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Sharks v Sea Eagles (Sunday, August 5, 2pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium, Cronulla): The Sharks will be still annoyed with their loss to the Broncos last weekend and will be very keen to run into a top four spot over the next five games. However Manly can cause a boilover here. They were just edged out by the Panthers last weekend. Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Panthers v Raiders (Sunday, August 5, 4.10pm, Panthers Stadium, Penrith): The Panthers had a win last weekend over Manly, but were still far from convincing. They need to find the confidence from earlier this season if they are to have any chance come finals time. The Raiders were spanked by the Storm last weekend and the Panthers have to do similar to convince themselves they are back. Your Local Independent tips: Panthers

The Rabbits “could shake

THIS weekend’s NRL round will be a classic example of what damage the also-rans can cause. Last weekend we saw the Titans cause some severe damage to the Warriors – on the field and points ladder. The potential is high for the same this weekend. Several games involve top eight teams pitted against teams who are looking at 2019. However the potential for disaster is real. Let’s pick some winners: Bulldogs v Broncos (Thursday, August 2, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): This should be a canter for the Broncos. But there-in lies the danger. Brisbane players cannot afford to mentally take a week off against the Dogs. Remember, last weekend the Tigers had more to play for than the Broncos, yet fell to the Dogs. Brisbane’s form has been excellent in recent weeks and can sneak into the top four if they keep winning. Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Knights v Wests Tigers (Friday, August 3, 6pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle): As already stated, the Tigers shot themselves in the foot last weekend and could have been just two points outside the eight. Mathematically they can still make it, but need to knock over Newcastle. The bookies have them as favourites. This will come back to how keen the Knights are to finish on a high. They were edged out by the Cows last weekend, but at home may have the edge over the mis-firing Tigers. Your Local Independent tips: Knights Rabbitohs v Storm (Friday, August 3, 7.55pm, ANZ Stadium,
