Not a swell idea Plenty of oppositon to Crescent Head car park sale
By SUE PATERICK
Regular Crescent Head visitors, Tracie and Steve Dunn from the Central Coast, are against the sale of the Rankine Street car park, which was constantly overcrowded recently when tropical cyclone Winston generated huge swells.
keep this car park, especially for peak holiday times,” he said. Tracie and Steve Dann from the Central Coast (pictured) often visit family in Crescent Head and neither want the car park sold. “There is no parking at Crescent Head during holiday time and when the surf’s happening,” Tracie said.
“Most people who come here are surfers and they aren’t going to stay at a boutique hotel, we all love camping,” Steve added. Apart from the cabins and caravan and tent FRONT PAGE AD sites offered at the Crescent Head Holiday Park, there are motels, apartments and 109 holiday houses for rent in this small village. • Continued Page 7
If people can’t park “there during peak holiday times, where would they park?
“
TROPICAL cyclone Winston not only devastated Fiji and generated huge seas off Australia’s East Coast, it has also re-awakened public furore over the possible loss of public car parking at Crescent Head. The popular surfing beach has attracted a huge influx of surfers chasing the waves whipped up by Winston, once again highlighting the popular sea-side village’s need for adequate parking. With the sale of its Rankine Street car park still undecided, since Kempsey Shire Council received an approach from a developer to purchase the site in 2013, both the Crescent Head community and visitors are extremely concerned. The developer’s proposal was for a 26-room boutique hotel, 300 square metres of retail floor space, a function room, hotel restaurant and 15 basement parking spaces. Secretary Manager of the Crescent Head Country Club, Colin Ryan, believes the community are the Rankine Street car park’s true custodians. The Crescent Head Development Focus Group, formed to act as spokespersons for the community for current and future proposals, has set up a petition against the sale that has attracted over 2000 signatures. Regular visitor to Crescent Head, Bryson McIntosh from Old Bar, is also against the car park’s sale. “The beach car park is full so they have to

A moving musical story Dance sessions boost for Parkinson’s sufferers
“
There is nothing that will upset their balance – no twirling or sliding, just relaxing and enjoying the music. If they can’t stand, they can still ‘dance’ in their seats.
By CHRISTINA PARKIN
“
THE strains of Abba’s ‘Dancing Queen’ greet me as I enter Rotary Hall to find a mixed group, some sitting, some standing, swaying and making various movements in response to the leader, Sheila Wilkinson. Smiles abound and there is a definite air of fun pervading the room. Closer attention to the participants reveals that some are displaying some of the characteristic symptoms of tremor, or shaking, slowed movement with rigid muscles, leading to impaired posture and balance. An innovative program of music, gentle exercises and an emphasis on the use of a modified form of the Argentinian tango dance is working wonders for those affected with Parkinson’s who attend this weekly session held each Wednesday in Rotary Hall on Hastings River Drive. “Using the stability provided by their partner, those affected can learn to dance, incorporating specially developed movements to stimulate their affected muscles and develop their core strength and balance,” explains Sheila. “There is nothing that will upset their balance – no twirling or sliding, just relaxing and enjoying the music. “If they can’t stand, they can still ‘dance’ in their seats.” Sheila and Russell Wilkinson have been dancing for many years and undertook special training to bring this movement program to people who have Parkinson’s. Although there are groups in Sydney - Port Macquarie, Shoalhaven and Lennox Head are the only regional groups outside the State’s capital. Parkinson’s is categorised by clinicians as a ‘movement disorder’. However it doesn’t just affect movement. Non-motor symptoms such as pain, depression and problems with memory and sleep can also occur and have an impact on the day-to-day life of the person with
Above: Kevin Grimes (right) who has advanced Parkinson’s, has enjoyed the weekly outing so much, he has only missed three sessions in two years. Below: Peter and Liz Thompson from the UK, with volunteer Saima King, enjoying attending the session to celebrate the second birthday of the group.
Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects people from all walks of life. It is quite common, with approximately 70,000 Australians living with Parkinson’s. The average age of diagnosis is 65 years, however younger people can be diagnosed with Parkinson’s too. Writing certainly changes and certainly speech may change as the muscles in the throat
deteriorate. The session also concentrates on exercising the throat with an exercise known as ‘LOUD’ where a phrase is progressively spoken louder and louder until the person is actually yelling. Peter Thompson, is a retired judge visiting from Woodbridge in Suffolk, England. Peter was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2011, before he retired from the bench. Peter and his wife, Liz, had bought an apartment in Port Macquarie
in 2006, and return every British winter to enjoy Port Macquarie in February/March. It was during one of these visits that Peter and Liz read the initial article about the sessions in the Independent and came every week, returning this year. “We don’t have anything like this in the UK, although just before we came back to Australia, the Royal Ballet promoted a special program they were about to conduct in four different centres, one being only eight miles from us in Ipswich,” said Mr Thompson. “We’ll be definitely joining this group when we return. “The exercises and dancing are good for anyone that has a mobility problem.” One of the most consistent attenders is retired school teacher from Kempsey, Mr Kevin Grimes, who lives alone. “I like dancing and the companionship,” said Mr Grimes, who relies on KinCare to bring him to the sessions. “I learnt ballroom dancing when I was younger but I prefer waltzes, although songs like ‘Dancing Queen’ inspire me when I’m doing the exercises. “I’d really like to do this more than once a week.” The session lasts from 9.30-11.00am and the location at Rotary Hall on Hastings River Drive offers flat parking and easy ramp access to the hall. The cost of $2.50 covers the hire of the hall as Sheila and Russell do not charge for their tuition. Morning tea is also included and many look forward to this social aspect as Parkinson’s can be socially isolating for those affected. For more information, Sheila and Russell can be contacted on 6583 8203 or 0438 849 964 or email them at russtystango@gmail.com.

SERIOUSLY, which cereal company is handing out drivers’ licences? I have had so many close calls in the last fortnight with other drivers that clearly should not be behind the wheel of a vehicle. In one day I had some lunatic indicating to go left on a two lane roundabout, he was in the right hand lane, went right all the way around, cut across two lanes of traffic to then go left from where he started? There were cars going in all directions to try and avoid him as no-one could actually work out where he was going. Just five minutes later and I was turning left off Lake Road to come face to face with a large 4WD ute that thought it was a good place to do a U-turn right on the corner! What was worse though, he couldn’t actually turn in the space he chose to, so had to complete about a 10 point turn. It had just started to rain so it was slippery; luckily I was driving to the conditions and so was the other car coming down the hill directly towards me! If we had been going any faster we would have had a Ute sandwich. What a clown! That’s just two of about 6 instances in a fortnight and I might add none of the offenders were P plate drivers. That’s right, they were all older drivers! So I want to know seriously, what cereal packet from the 60s/70s did you get your drivers’ licence from?

Transport hub offers plenty of benefits THE Draft North Coast Regional Plan has considered a strategic direction for delivering transport infrastructre and services in the State regions over the next 20 years with a vision of improved transport connectivity and freight networks. Transport of freight infrastructre provides business with good access to South East Queensland, the Hunter, Sydney and International markets
while supporting jobs. The plan is to provide guidelines for locating freight facilities along the Pacific Highway to support the cost effective and efficient movement of freight. It is also proposed to enhance the connectivity of the region’s road and rail freight and transport services as well as the possible development of Kempsey Airport which could
provide aircraft related services. The matter of the establishment of a major transport hub in the Macleay Valley was supported by council at its last meeting. It is understood the site proposed has access to both the rail and the Pacific Highway. The establishment of a transport hub will have both national and international benefits which will boost
the economy of not only the Macleay Valley, but the newly identified regional cities of Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour. It will be essential that council continues to pursue Government support. John BowelI OAM South Kempsey

Roundabout concern WITH reference to an article that appeared in your paper concerning roundabouts, written by Anthony Pennell. I agree with him entirely. I have written to Council twice about the same problem, in particular the one on the Oxley Highway where Lake Road and Sherwood Road join the Oxley Highway, but I am afraid with no result, except that I was informed that it belonged to the RMS. Do we have to wait for a fatal accident to occur before something is done about it? B Parsley Port Macquarie
(Editor’s note: This letter included a PMHC response from 2011 which stated: ‘A number of criteria are applied in assessing the required sight distance for motorists using roundabouts hence the amount of vegetation that can be present within the roundabout …. a clear line of sight of approximately 5 seconds, ie 70m for vehicles entering the roundabout assuming an approach speed of 50km/h and a clear line of sight of approximately 4 seconds, ie 20m to vehicles circulating on the roundabout assuming a circulating speed of 15kmh … A consequence of removing all vegetation at roundabouts is an increase in approach speeds …. with removal of vegetation motorists
are more likely to negotiate the roundabout at a higher speed thus reducing safety … the presence of some vegetation encourages vehicles to slow on the approach…improving safety for motorists.’)
Problem highlighted WELL done Anthony Pennell (Independent 18 February 2016)! You could not have written a better letter regarding the difficulty negotiating the Lake/Sherwood Rd roundabout on the Oxley Highway. At that intersection, traffic lights are urgently needed (far more so than at Wrights Road).
THUMBS
UP
I have lived at one of the lifestyle villages Anthony mentions for three years, and during that time traffic on the Oxley Highway has increased dramatically. An associated issue is the need for footpaths/cycleways along the Oxley Highway to the Lake Innes Shopping Centre. Older folk are continuously being told to keep fit, exercise and walk. At the moment a walk to Lake Innes Coles, or Bunnings, is almost a suicide mission. Please, Port Macquarie Hastings Council and RMS, give this matter your consideration immediately. TO the parent of three kids who were climbing along the wall outside the Glasshouse, about 1.5 metres off the ground. Just one slip and there could have been serious injury. Council should not have even allowed this ledge to even exist!

Thumbs up
Thumbs Down TO the major retailer in Kempsey with the dirtiest under store car parking area. Litter of all kinds abound together with heaps of tree leaves covering some of the parking area. Most uninviting. It appears no cleaning is done. This compares most unfavourably with other undercover parking areas in town which are clean, tidy and inviting and have signs prohibiting bike riding and skateboarding.
TO the paramedics who treated me after a golden orb spider bit my hand. I was in excruciating pain and they were so professional, calming and efficient. Well done boys, you should be cloned.
Thumbs Up TO the kids at the Town Beach Skate Park. I often walk my dog along the breakwall and am so impressed that you are inclusive to all and look after the younger kids. Makes me think your parents should be so proud. Now if only the small minority would learn to use the bins provided.
THANK YOU to the 3-4 pilots that fly over our house every weekend in formation, my kids love seeing you.
Thumbs Up I HAD a surfing accident few weeks ago and cut my chin. I went to see the life guards at Town beach who stopped the bleeding and called an ambulance. The doctor at the base hospital did 5 stitches. Everything happened in less than 2 hours. I wanted to say thank you to the life guards on Town Beach, the paramedics and the medical team at the hospital. They were very professional, friendly and they all did a very good job.

Kempsey Saints volunteers are kicking plenty of goals By SUE PATERICK
Kempsey Saints Football Club volunteers Brett Sutherland, Luke Flanagan, Jason Fisher, Martin Peek, Ky Flanagan and Eathan Fisher-Peek busy onsite extending the club’s amenities block
FOR two months a group of dedicated volunteers from the Kempsey Saints Football Club have been hard at work upgrading its amenities and canteen block in the Eden Street Fields. Every weekend a work gang of the club’s committee members and parents have been onsite extending the existing building, hoping to have everything up and running before the season starts in April. The Kempsey Saints Football Club’s colour is green and it consists of Under 6s to Premier First Grade soccer players over 15. Its competitive ages play down to Forster, but only go as far north as South West Rocks because Kempsey is the northern end of the league’s Mid North Coast Section.
Luke Flanagan, coach and committee member, said the Club’s old building had a very small canteen and toilets, but no change rooms. “Part of the stipulations for premier league is to provide change rooms for officials and players,” he said. Because the oval is in a floodway, the building could only be extended by 30 per cent. Luke said the club was appreciative of the support of local businesses: O’Donnell and Hanlon, Ben Paix Plumbing, Alex Plumbing, K and T Earthworks and Eric Walsh Electricals. Committee member, Jane Walsh, said donations from the community would be more than welcome to help fit out the canteen and buy paint. Contact Jane on: janiew2008@ hotmail.com
Council service review ‘a must’
LAST Friday, Port Macquarie-Hastings Councillors took another step forward in reviewing the entire range of services that are delivered to our community by council. This task was committed to early in the first year of this council term and provides for an indepth look at both the services that are currently being provided, and the level at which those services are provided to the community. Community feedback on council’s services is gathered over a period of time through community surveys, submissions, reference panels, specific community feedback sessions and from general discussions.
INSIDE COUNCIL
With Mayor Peter Besseling Portfolios: Communication, Government and Community Relations
What is very clear is that council delivers a vast range of services and determining the appropriate service level relates very much to the finances available to deliver such services.
The review has presented councillors with a very detailed look at a range of services, which have been identified previously as ones of significant interest to the community and councillors. This detailed information is viewed alongside community feedback and a range of service levels are considered, which are categorised as gold, silver or bronze or minimum. The financial implications of delivering these services (at each of these levels) is also reviewed so that decisions are always made with a view to how they will affect council’s operational expenditure and overall budget. This brings a realistic approach to the process
and targets what can actually be achieved rather than simply what would be great to have. To ensure the best interests of the community are always considered, the data collected from community feedback is considered at the front-end of the process, right alongside the financial implications. This serves to remind all councillors about why each of us are spending so much time and effort in looking at not only what is being delivered but also how it is being delivered. It is all about trying to match community expectations (as closely as possible) to the delivery of services and infrastructure in the most efficient and effective means possible.

“
It’s time mothers ‘went public’ By CHRISTINA PARKIN IT’S time breastfeeding went truly public, according to long-time mothers’ advocate, LeeAnn Foord. “I can’t believe that the issue of breastfeeding in public is still as controversial as it was 30, or even 50 years ago,” said LeeAnn, who has recently retired as a counsellor with the Australian Breastfeeding Association after thirty years. Attending her first (then) Nursing Mothers’ Association meeting in the Sydney suburb of Campbelltown, was the first time Lee-Ann had left her seven-month-old daughter home with her husband Wayne, in the evening. “It was my first time going anywhere without her,” explained Mrs Foord. “I enjoyed the meeting so much that I didn’t miss a single meeting for six years. “In those days, we laid our babies on lambskins on the floor and dressed our toddlers in puddlesuits – a neck to toe nylon outfit that protected clothing while the toddler was outside or involved with a messy activity.” Lee-Ann was a counsellor and Group Leader with Campbelltown before coming to Port Macquarie in 1995 and joining the Hastings Group. Lee-Ann held a number of regional, state and national positions with the Nursing Mothers’ Association, which renamed itself the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) in 2001, once society became more accepting of the public use of the word ‘breastfeeding.’ The ABA recently had its 52nd birthday, and now boasts 1100 trained voluntary counsellors and community educators, and with over 230 groups give coverage throughout Australia and with a 24-hour breastfeeding helpline, mothers have access to reliable information and ongoing support. In 1974, ABA published the first Australian book on breastfeeding, and it helped push
Lee-Ann Foord
‘I can’t believe that the issue of breastfeeding in public is still as controversial as it was 30, or even 50 years ago,’ says Lee-Ann Foord for a law, passed in 1984, making it illegal to discriminate against women breastfeeding in public. Mrs Mary Paton, one of the six founding members of Nursing Mother’s, said you would be labelled disgusting if you fed your baby in public in the early 1960s. If the baby was hungry, ‘you’d have to go home, run to a car or a ladies’ toilet’. Over 50 years on, some mothers still feel intimidated if they dare feed their babies in public. To assist with this need, Lee-Ann Foord was a founding member of the national Baby Care Room working group which developed resources for local councils to build these facilities into council or shopping centre amenities. “As a counsellor, I’ve also been responsible for the hiring of breast pumps to new mothers referred from their local maternity unit or baby health centre,” said Mrs Foord. “I also recall when I was an organiser for the counsellor phone roster for Campbellown, which was an STD call from Sydney, that there were times my phone was so busy, I had to take the phone off the hook to visit the bathroom.” ABA now has a national Breastfeeding Helpline, which was formed in 2009, and receives
over 88,000 calls a year run by voluntary trained ABA counsellors from their home and often with their children close by. The continuation of this Brestfeeding Helpline – 1800 mum 2 mum (1800 686 2 686) – was recently threatened by closure when the Australian Government proposed withdrawing its funding, but has now received a welcome funding extension reprieve. Lee-Ann has also been involved with the training and assessing of new counsellors through two different national training schemes prior to the current one which provides nationally accredited and recognised qualifications in counselling or community education. From conducting hospital visits to new mums, to school talks on caring for babies to being the regional representative for the Holiday Coast Region and an Assistant Branch President for NSW, Lee-Ann has shared her compassion and empathy with many new mums and mentored many new counsellors. “Lee-Ann has always worked quietly in the background, offering her expertise and support at meetings, fundraisers and public awareness campaigns,” said local Group Leader for the Hastings ABA group, Ms Lydia Wills.
“She has been a strong role model, an empathic peer and an encouraging and supportive friend.” Lee-Ann’s exceptional listening skills and the personal experience of her brother’s suicide, led Lee-Ann to become a trained Lifeline counsellor and she has now specialised in suicide prevention to become Lifeline Mid North Coast’s ‘Life Matters’ Coordinator. In 2015, Lee-Ann was awarded a national suicide Prevention Australia LiFE Award for excellence in suicide prevention - community development at the 2015 National Suicide Prevention Conference. Lee-Ann’s other passion extends to having a first degree black belt in the hapkido martial art. Having contributed so much to the Australian Breastfeeding Association, is there anything that Lee-Ann has gained from her efforts? “I’ve enjoyed the friendship, knowledge and support from other like-minded mothers, but I gained skills and opportunities to try new things without judgement,” explained Mrs Foord. “For example, my experience and skills with ABA seriously contributed to my suitability for employment with Lifeline. They could see how well I worked with volunteers and with running groups. “However, I feel the lesson I’ve best learnt through ABA is the ability to support the choices of a family without telling them what to do and without judgement.” The Hastings ABA group welcomes contact from all mothers and Group Leader, Ms Lydia Wills can be contacted on 6581 4892. A retirement event is being organised to farewell Lee-Ann, so if you have been a past ABA member, counsellor or mum who would like to attend, please contact Lydia for details for the event to be held in April.

More than just a sale By SUE PATERICK
THE cattle were lowing when the Kempsey Saleyards awoke last Thursday and farmers and breeders from far and wide gathered to sell and buy livestock. According to Ian Argue from Kempsey Stock and Land, the market is good at the moment and returns are three times greater than they were three years ago. “But it’s not just a cattle sale, it’s a place where producers come and find out what other producers are doing,” he said. “It’s a place to network and a great day’s outing.” Hundreds of producers attend the fortnightly Thursday sales where over 850 cattle are sold. They come from Taree, Valla and Wauchope, but professional buyers also attend so cattle end up in Queensland, Victoria and the NSW Tablelands. Ian explained that cattle follow the season, which has been good here but bad in Victoria. Cattle are purchased to fatten up and sell on, to kill for supermarkets and butchers at local abattoirs, Eversons Food Processors, while others are killed to transport overseas. Ian said the whole town of Kempsey benefits from the cattle sales, as producers spend money in local shops, produce stores and buy fuel. Breeder and cattle producer, Brian Sowter, agrees. “The Kempsey Saleyards are a big asset for the district with the amount of money the sales bring in,” he said. “It’s a big industry and the amount of cattle going through the saleyards will grow in numbers, especially when the Pacific Highway is finished. “And we’ll have to keep improving the yards or we’ll get left behind.” Lynne Connors from Adalohn Farm near Port Macquarie attends the Kempsey cattle
There was movement at Kempsey Saleyards last Thursday with over 100 producers attending the fortnightly cattle sales sales every few months and was selling steers last Thursday. She likes the way Kempsey Saleyards are run and attributes this to Ian Argue, who she says is a great auctioneer. ‘I think the saleyards here are one of the better ones around the region.” Ken Morgan from Bonsmara Stud at Yarras west of Wauchope always attends the Kempsey cattle sales. “The service we get here outstrips all the other saleyards I’ve had to deal with,” he said. “The Argues are a great family and Ian is an absolute gentlemen, who shows a lot of interest in what you’re doing.” From South Africa originally, Ken is breeding South African cattle called Bonsmara

Not a swell idea
• From Page 1 Kempsey Shire Councillor, Bruce Morris, who moved that Council not proceed with the car park’s sale at its February meeting, said in three years he hasn’t seen any formal plans for the boutique hotel and doesn’t know who the developer is. At the meeting he also called for the adoption of a Community Development Plan or Master Plan for the strategic development of the Crescent Head village, and the satisfactory resolution of the lack of vehicle parking. And if Council’s evaluation finds that the Rankine Street car park should be sold, Cr Morris also moved that the sale process be recommenced. His motion was ultimately overturned with Council voting to proceed with the Crescent Head CBD Masterplan and a Community Development Plan. Cr Morris said he wasn’t against development, just bad development. “If we can’t find alternative parking, we shouldn’t sell the Rankine Street car park,” he said. “If people can’t park there during peak holiday times, where would they park?” Cr Dean Saul, who recorded his vote against Council’s final motion, said the community has strongly voiced their opposition against the car park’s sale. “The feeling is that the Rankine Street car park is an important part of Crescent Head’s social fabric, as it allows access to the Country Club for the aged and infirm,” he added. “They don’t want to see further high rise buildings at Crescent Head because it would destroy the village’s charm.” All Councillors were asked to comment but none were received at the time of publication. Robert Pitt, Council’s Director of Sustainable Environment, said Council had not committed to the car park’s sale. “Council has committed to involving the community in the process, and its report details the steps it intends to follow if and when a firm development proposal is received,” he said.

How long have you lived in or around the Macleay? About 27 years What do you love most about the Macleay? Apart from its natural beauty, its pristine beaches, wide river, clear creeks and glorious hinterland, the Macleay Valley has a strong sense of community. People give each other a hand when it’s needed and we all love the wonderful place we call home. The Macleay is still very much a country region and I also love our slower pace of life. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I’m a photo/journalist for Your Local Independent and have been submitting several articles a week about the Macleay Valley since October, 2015. I love meeting local folks who do remarkable things in their lives and in the community, often working away quietly but steadily, and then sharing their tales with you. How much some people give of themselves never ceases to amaze me. What do you like least about your work? Being able to help and support my local community is a dream job. I love it, but there is never enough time to write all the stories there is to tell in this lovely valley. How do you start your day? With a cup of Earl Grey tea and then an hour of yoga. What do you do in your spare time? I love hanging out with friends, taking our dogs to the beach and snapping lots of photographs. I also do a bit of creative writing and have just started an Associate Diploma in Creative Writing from Southern Cross University, so no spare time really. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Raising a mixed family of four great children and three grandchildren, with one on the way. I love being a nanny. I’m also proud of the small contribution I’ve made as a journalist to my local community.

We must cherish community elders HELPING End Elder Abuse: To recognise the third anniversary of the NSW Elder Abuse Helpline and Resource Unit, the NSW Government has provided an additional $60,000 to expand ‘train the trainer’ program, as well as offer to support more research into the prevalence of elder abuse in Australia. The abuse of older people in our community will not be tolerated. The NSW Government is determined to help put a stop to elder abuse, and will continue to strongly support the NSW Elder Abuse Helpline and Resource Unit. Since it was created by the current NSW Government in 2013, the Helpline has received more than 4000 calls. It receives over 100 calls a month mostly from family members and service providers. Most calls relate to psychological or financial abuse and neglect. If you see or hear something that isn’t right, tell someone or call the Elder Abuse Helpline on 1800 628 221. Wauchope council meeting THIS month, residents are invited to attend Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s Ordinary meeting in Wauchope - on Wednesday March 16 starting at 5.30pm at the Wauchope Showground Hall in High Street. Changing the venue for council meetings forms part of the ‘Taking the Council to the Community’ program, providing greater community access to meetings and decision-making processes. “It is important for council to continue to engage all of our Local Government Area in both feedback and in decision making,” said Mayor Peter Besseling. “Along with our community engagement meetings, holding council meetings in various locations allows for greater public access to address council.” Business papers for the meeting will be available for viewing during office hours at council offices and libraries from Monday, March 14, or on council’s website www. pmhc.nsw.gov.au/councilmeetings from Friday, March 11. Residents can address council on agenda items or in the Public Forum for items not listed on the formal agenda. Anyone wishing to address Council will be required to complete and submit the appropriate forms no later than 4.30pm on Tuesday March 15. Forms are available from any Council Customer Service Office or you can download them at www.pmhc.nsw. gov.au/agenda and www.pmhc.nsw.gov.au/ publicforum. Alternatively, you can phone 02 6581 8111.
This time you can’t blame ‘the sub’ my
SOME journalists are good at reporting the news and some are good at putting words together. Some are no good at all. Some newspapers, seeking to cut costs and provide more income for shareholders, have lowered their standards and have decided either to outsource sub-editing or demand that the people who write the stories do their own subediting. The readers have noticed. Sub-editing is a skill that is developed. In years past subs toward the end of their journalistic careers have developed the skills necessary to become subs. Some have been good at it and some have chosen to retire gracefully. The advent of computers saw many older journalists quit rather than learn new skills. I should say at this stage that I spent much of my working life as a sub-editor. In the early days subs sat in a little room of their own, and hours would be spent in discussions over words, such as whether they should allow ‘hospitalise’ or whether ‘chopper’ should be used for helicopter. To be called into the subs’ room was similar to an errant schoolboy being sent to the principal’s office. Everybody looked and tongues started wagging about ‘what has he done?’ Very few women were journalists in the early days I am writing about. Each newspaper had a style and journalists had to follow that style.
LAURIE BARBER
Some subs had a reputation for drinking and errant behaviour, but they were the brains of the newspapers. They gave their particular newspaper its personality. In the early days by-lines did not exist. Reports were the property of the newspaper and reporters were writing for that newspaper. They reported what happened and the readers were free to make up their own minds. Radio and television changed all that. Newspapers, with shareholders in mind, found ways to cut costs. Did it matter if an occasional hospitalise or chopper made it into the news columns. Would the reader notice anyway? I still hear the comment lamenting the lack of proof readers on newspapers. With some exceptions, proof readers were not responsible for the editorial style and accuracy of newspapers. In the old days, when printers set editorial matter into type, proof readers were employed to ensure
that what the printers set was what the editorial department wanted. It had nothing or little to do with editorial standards. Some newspapers still employ proof readers, but this is mainly to do with advertising. One day proof readers will be a thing of the past. I have to say that sub-editors were not always the most popular people on their newspapers. Firstly, they were criticised by readers if a mistake appeared in the paper. Then they were criticised by reporters for cutting their stories or eliminating the ‘best’ bit. Have you ever wondered how every line in every page finished exactly where it was supposed to finish? Blame the subs for that. I lament the downgrading of subs on newspapers, but I also lament the rise of computers in every line of business. Where will it all end? Newspapers have reduced their staff and some have gone too far. As I write this, I notice that a paper, which retrenched several people recently, had five advertisements for staff. Perhaps one day we will see on every news story a comment along the lines of ‘not a single error appeared in this story’. Of course, that is the aim of all newspapers, but don’t hold your breath. lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au.

What are you planning?
Wauchope set to ‘shave’ lives By LIZZIE McLEOD
Kempsey South Public School Year 6 student, Adam Boyes and teacher, Toby Davies, showing off their newly developed skills
No need to run away to join circus By CHRISTINA PARKIN MANY a reader will remark ‘They didn’t do that in my day’ when told about the opportunities for learning circus skills with Circus Oz, which was made available to students at Kempsey South Public School last week. “The kids just absolutely loved it,” remarked Relieving Principal for Kempsey South Public School, Mrs Sharyn Blackwell. “They loved trying new things and put so much effort into concentrating for long periods.” The three-day workshop at the school culminated in an energetic performance for friends, family and peers where students from Years 4, 5 and 6 demonstrated choreographed dance, mini-tramp, plate spinning, hula hoop, juggling, and rolla-bolla to foot-stomping applause. The workshop enabled the students to have
exposure to ‘different’ kinds of jobs in addition to developing their concentration, fine and gross motor skills, increasing their self-esteem and to just ‘have a go’. Dance and television star Ghenoa Geller, of ‘Move It, Mob-Style’ fame, also worked with the students to learn hip-hop dance styles and use acrobatic tricks. “There is often an element of ‘shame’ when asked to get up in front of a crowd, but the students enjoyed the opportunity because their skill levels had really increased,” explained Mrs Blackwell. Kempsey Shire Council partnered with The Red Cross, Circus Oz, The Glasshouse Theatre and Kempsey South Public to deliver this unique program. Circus training involves fun, combined with hard work. While nurturing attributes such as self-discipline, students can develop confidence and have a laugh at the same time.
THIS month Wauchope is coming together to help ‘shave’ lives and support those living with blood cancer. Each year more than 150,000 people will get sponsored to shave or colour their hair to support Australians with blood cancer and fund research, and this year Debbie Watt has taken on the challenge. Debbie says that the Wauchope event – on Sunday March 13 at the Wauchope Country Club - will not only support locals dealing with leukaemia, lymphoma, or myeloma, but will also be a fun day for the whole family. “It’s family day. So we’re having bare foot bowls, face painting, hair colouring, sausage sizzle, steak sandwiches, there’s a juke box, and of course naturally we are doing the shave,” said Debbie. “There’s lots of people in this area that have actually got blood cancer. There’s a few people that have touched me with their stories and that’s why I am doing it.” The World’s Greatest Shave is now one of the world’s most well-known fundraisers. It is no wonder it has become so supported in Australia, as today, 34 Australians will be given the news that they have leukaemia, lymphoma, or myeloma, and many will turn to the Leukaemia foundation for help. “It (The World’s Greatest Shave) is just fabulous. More and more people are getting
involved in it, it’s just great,” says Debbie. “We expect 100 plus people to be down there, at least. “There’s a lot of locals coming and as well as one of the football clubs – Thunder – a local rugby union club.” Not only is Debbie having her head shaved, but there will also be the opportunity for others who would like to join in and support the shave. “There are also shaves down there for $10, a lot of the guys are going to do it,” says Debbie. “So far as I’m aware me and a chap called Cedric are the only ones that are having their heads shaved.” The money raised on the day will go towards research needed to find treatments for blood cancer and to support families when they need it most. This includes providing people with a free home-away-from-home near a hospital during their treatment. It will also provide transport to appointments, and as much emotional support needed, free of charge. To support Debbie and the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave, head down to the Wauchope Country Club on Sunday, March 13. It costs $10 to shave, or a $2 donation to colour. There will also be a BBQ to enjoy on the day and many family fun activities. The event starts at 2pm and finishes at 5pm.

THOSE Interested in applying for funding under Round Three of the National Stronger Regions Fund (NSRF) have until March 15, 2016, to submit applications. The NSRF aims to support priority infrastructure projects in regional communities, stimulating jobs and growth. This latest round of the National Stronger Regions Fund is open to submissions from local governments and incorporated not-for-profit organisations. I encourage applicants with projects demonstrating strong long-term economic benefits and the potential to tackle local disadvantage to submit their application as soon as possible to avoid missing out. The NSRF will provide $1 billion over five years for capital projects involving the construction of new infrastructure or the upgrade or extension of existing facilities. The Coalition Government has a strong commitment to strengthening the regions, and through the first two rounds, has already provided $505 million in crucial funding towards 162 projects across the country. Grants must be between $20,000 and $10 million and grant funding must be matched in cash on at least a dollar-for-dollar basis except for those applicants in remote and very remote locations. For Round Three, remote and very remote applicants need to contribute at least one dollar for every three dollars of NSRF funding sought. More information on the programme is available at: www.infrastructure.gov.au/nsrf.
By CHRISTINA PARKIN THE Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) has launched a new children’s book, ‘Mildred Makes a Difference’, to help raise funds for the community-owned service and teach children about the lifesaving work of the helicopters and their crews. Mildred is the brainchild of Kylie Morris, Community Liaison Officer for Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service for the mid-north coast. Written by Mel and Mick Wilson, another Community Liaison Officer, and illustrated by local artist, Mick Rees, the soft-cover book ‘Mildred Makes a Difference’ is ideal reading for young children, eight years and under. It outlines the adventures of Mildred and her gang as they undergo transporting the paramedical teams and is part of a series designed as a fundraiser for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. “We’re looking to do school and pre-school readings and leaving a little worksheet for colouring-in with the classes, along with an order form for the book,” explained Ms Morris. “The book retails at only $10 and all money goes to keeping the helicopters flying over our skies for free.” Mildred is the name of a real helicopter based at the base at Broadmeadow, which was named as a result of a bequest from Mildred Scanes of Nelson Bay. With three other books planned for release, children will have the opportunity to meet ‘Betty the Bell 412’ from the Newcastle base, ‘Barry the BK’ from Tamworth and a brand new helicopter, ‘Gus the Augusta AW139’, who will be joining the service in 2017. The cost of maintaining this vital community service is $6.5 million per annum (the average
Westpac Rescue Helicopter paramedic Sean Maher reading ‘Mildred makes a Difference’ to a group of pre-schoolers cost per mission is $8,500), but well and truly worth it when you consider the helicopter airlifts around six people per week. There are three main mission types: primary (responding to incidents/collisions/ emergencies); secondary (inter-hospital transfers) and search and rescue. Established in 1975, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service includes four helicopters operating across the Hunter, New England – North West, Central Coast and Mid North Coast regions. The service undertakes more than 1000 missions each year and operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, tasked by the emergency services of NSW. Since 1975 the service has enjoyed a successful partnership with the Westpac Banking Corporation. Each year the service relies on the support of the community and corporate sector to help fundraise over $5million of its annual operating budget. “All funds raised within our flight area, stay in our region and go directly towards ensuring the Westpac Rescue Helicopter is available
to respond to emergencies in our region,” explained Ms Morris. Ms Morris is inviting schools and pre-schools to organise a special reading of ‘Mildred Makes a Difference’ to help them understand the role of emergency services in their community. “We are hoping that P&C committees might consider funding the purchase of the book as a reader for their young primary students,” she said. “It is authentically Australian and describes a situation that any family in our region may well experience in an emergency. “It makes an ideal gift for a young child as well.” You can track the work of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter on Facebook at: www.facebook. com/rescuehelicopter.official or follow the adventures of Mildred at www.facebook.com/ mildredandfriends and purchase books online at www.mildredandfriends.com.au. Alternatively, copies of the book are available at the office of Your Local Independent for $10 each. Schools interested in organising a book reading can contact kylie.morris@rescuehelicopter.com.au

Taste Wauchope hospitality Twilight event showcases locals
MORE than 25 beer, wine, spirits and food producers will delight foodies at Wauchope Showground on Friday night (March 11) for Hastings Co-op’s Twilight Tastings event. The second annual event, which showcases producers from near and far, has a particular focus on the Hastings’ farm-fresh produce, free tastings and exclusive offers. Event organiser, Lisa Attkins, who manages Hastings Co-op’s Timbertown and Wauchope Supa IGA Liquor Plus stores, said she has been overwhelmed by the response from local producers. “Last year we had around eight producers involved, but the numbers have swelled to more than 25 this year and we have a range of new partners and attractions,” Ms Attkins said. “As well as being able to sample premium beer, wine, spirits and food, there will be live music from Hannah Pead, a fundraising barbecue run by Wauchope Lioins Club, a bar operated by Wauchope Show Society and lots more. “It’s all about celebrating beer, wine, spirits and food in a relaxed environment where suppliers can share their products and locals can try something new. “This is a totally family-friendly event, with a jumping castle, slushies and a popcorn machine and Saxby’s soft drinks for the kids.” Delights will range from organic chocolates,
Preparing for Hastings Co-op’s Twilight Tastings are, from left, Andrew Willows, Melissa Ward, Lisa Attkins, Carol Leach and Kylie Joseph Meltique Beef and local strawberries and cheeses to award-winning wines from local wineries, well-known spirits and boutique beers. “It will be a great opportuity to talk directly with producers and grab a great deal, which is

the Hastings Co-operative have decided to do it all again, ‘even bigger and better’. “We are celebrating our 100th birthday this year, so what better time to do what we do best – give back to the community,” she said.

Help celebrate 100th birthday HASTINGS Co-op is calling on locals to help prepare for a string of 100-year birthday community celebrations. “Given the Co-operative’s strong involvement in the region over the past 100 years, we’re hoping there are people who would be happy to share historic documents, artefacts and photos for a range of events, including a display at the upcoming Wauchope Show,” chief executive officer Allan Gordon said. “Even old machinery, newspaper clippings, cook books, labels or uniforms would be great, as we take a walk down memory lane – and
celebrate how far we’ve come as a community. “There are so many local families who contributed to Hastings Co-op’s journey so far and we would love to display some of those memories.” With the help of local historians, Hastings Co-op is planning to fill the stage of Wauchope Showground’s hall with memorabilia at the annual show on April 1 and 2. Bills can bring some nasty surprises, so it pays to check them carefully
Checking your bills can soften the blow NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe is warning the public to carefully check their bills, pointing to a recent case in which a consumer detected significant errors in two bills in the space of a week, saving themselves nearly $400 out of bills totalling $1000. Mr Stowe said many people assumed their bills, whether for home loans, utilities, credit cards or even supermarket purchases, were error free. “Don’t always assume a service provider has got it right,” he said. “A bill may be less fact than fiction. Every consumer needs to play detective with their accounts. Interrogation can often save you serious money. “All bills and accounts are worthy of scrutiny. In the cited case significant errors appeared in two bills, one a mortgage account and the other a phone bill. “When the providers were contacted, they admitted their errors and agreed to reverse the incorrect charges. “Just because many payment systems are automated doesn’t mean there is no margin for error. “Read your bills carefully when they arrive. Make sure you haven’t been overcharged or been double billed and contact the trader or your credit card provider if you pick up any errors. They will usually help resolve incorrect
billing. “Scanning errors can occur in transactions like grocery shopping. Read your receipts as soon as you get them and let the cashier know if you detect a mistake. “Check subscription renewal notices to make sure you are only paying for the correct renewal period. “Challenge unsubstantiated price increases on subscriptions, insurances and other products and services. “Shop around for comparison prices and contact your current service provider. You will often find they are happy to review your account to keep you as a customer.” Mr Stowe said consumers should feel comfortable challenging businesses about bills. “It pays to speak up and question any items you don’t recall paying for or don’t understand,” he said. “A savvy consumer is an assertive consumer. “Keep your receipts and keep your cool when dealing with traders who may have overcharged or double charged you. “Credit card fraud is also something everyone should be alert to. Thieves can charge to your card by simply using your card numbers and expiration date. “Don’t forget to check automatic or direct debits for errors too.”

Business MONTHLY Don’t mess up our ‘back yard’ DUMPING household rubbish in public bins at sporting grounds, beaches, parks and reserves is illegal and causes big problems for our community. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Director Matt Rogers said: “It seems that people do not understand the money it costs to clean up illegally dumped waste every year. It’s an eyesore, damages the local environment and attracts vermin and pests such as rats, foxes and cockroaches. “Our sports teams, locals and tourists all have to contend with full bins and overflowing rubbish.” President of the Hastings River District Cricket Association Shane Williams said: “The feedback from our clubs is they often can’t use the bins provided because other people have dumped household rubbish in them. If the bins are overflowing our cricket teams have to take their rubbish home with them, and we’ve seen litter blowing across the oval and down onto Oxley beach.” “For a tourist destination, these bad habits of illegal dumping in public bins from some of our community members are an embarrassment to those who do the right thing,” Mr Rogers said. “So if you are caught dumping rubbish - be prepared to pay big fines”.

Will the May Budget Halt your Transition to Retirement? If you’re born before 1 July 1960 you have reached what we call, in the superannuation world, the preservation age. To me this is when you have reached that golden age of having the best of both worlds. You are that special person that has reached the age you can continue to work AND be able to commence a TTRP (Transition to Retirement Pension). Some individuals would start their TTRP to provide flexibility allowing them to gradually move into retirement by reducing their working hours. A major highlight for many who have reached this age and still working is the access to tax advantages associated with the superannuation income stream (TTRP) while redirecting extra contributions into their super account from their salary. The most advantageous tax concession is that once your superannuation is put into the pension phase you gain tax-free earnings on assets financing the super pension and, if aged over 60, the pension you draw is tax free.
However, I note that whilst attending the SMSF Association national conference in Adelaide a couple of weeks ago it was revealed that the government could be looking to move or make changes to the Transition to Retirement scheme. Treasurer Scott Morrison advised however that any changes will be protected by grandfathering provisions for those people who are already in the system. Of course every individual and their circumstances are different and there are lots of rules and regulations into implementing such a strategy. If you’ve reached this age and considering taking advantage of the TTRP/ salary sacrifice strategy then you should seek advice from your Accountant or Adviser in the first instance. It might also prove to be wise in implementing this sooner rather than later just in case any changes come about. If you need assistance or more information, contact Tania at Maven Accounting an accredited SMSF Specialist Advisor on 02 6584 9201

Kendall violin winner returns By LIZZIE McLEOD
TALENTED young violinist and winner of the Kendall National Violin Competition, Harry Bennetts will be performing at the Kendall School of Arts on Sunday, March 13. Since winning the prestigious Kendall competition in September last year, Bennetts has been performing throughout Australia. He has played with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and even toured with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, which named him as one of their emerging young artists. “The Kendall National Violin Competition has quite a high standing in the music world of Australia and this is the eighteenth year it has been running,” said committee member, Ensi Payne. “It is a national competition and there is a set program. Musicians send in a disc of their work for the first round to the Sydney University and to other judges. And when they’re selected, there is a semi-final with 8 violinists. They’re all very good, brilliant young violinists - 22 years and under. “And from the semi-final, which is conducted at the Sydney conservatorium, there is then four finalists. The lucky thing is that they will come to Kendall for the finals.

“The judges come here and we usually have a very good audience for the finals which is held in September.” Winners of the The Kendall National Violin competition not only receive lucrative prizes, but more importantly a major boost to their careers. “An Australian made violin is presented to the winner and for the next few years there’s a money prize of $4000 which is to be used in furthering their music education,” said Ms Payne. “They also have a small tour that goes to Nambucca, Kendall and a Sydney venue. This is a paid tour and gives the young violinists the experience of performing to an audience as a soloist. “Overall, the competition is a great thing that has happened for this area.” Goetz Richter, Artistic Director of the Kendall National Violin Competition, said: “Harry has chosen some wonderfully romantic music for his recital - it will suit his splendid musicality and technique and it is sure to captivate audiences.” Harry Bennetts will be performing on March 13 at the Kendall School Of Arts from 2pm. Tickets for the recital are $25 for adults and $10 for students and can be purchased from KNVC, P.O. Box 86, Kendall 2439 (Cheque and SAE) or by phoning Mavis Barnes on 6559 4339.

Don’t miss this classic “
Both Lance as Oscar, and Tim as Felix, have done a wonderful job bringing these diverse characters to life
“
By CHRISTINA PARKIN PAUL Simon’s hit 1965 classic play, The Odd Couple, has come to the Port Macquarie Players Theatre opening on Friday March 4 and is running for nine performances closing on Sunday, March 20 2016. Directed by local photographer Steve Harris, and assisted by Jenny Gould, the show features dynamic performances from Lance Thompson (Oscar Madison) and Tim Gibbs (Felix Ungar). “I selected the Odd Couple because I grew up with the TV series and loved the humour and the characters so much I decided to take on Paul Simon’s play as my first venture into directing,” said Mr Harris. “I am thankful to have the highly experienced Jenny Gould assisting and a great backstage and technical crew on this production.” True to the TV series, the play is set in Oscar’s apartment in New York when Felix turns up after a family crisis. Oscar takes pity on Felix and offers him a spare room and that’s when things become unstuck. The pair become the Odd Couple, with the neurotic Felix driving the laid back and slovenly Oscar to the point of madness. The success of the 1968 film version of the stage play, which starred Jack Lemmon as Felix and Walter Matthau as Oscar, served as the catalyst to bringing the characters to television,

Lance Thompson as Oscar Madison looks on while his card-playing mates appease the annoying Felix Unger, played by Tim Gibbs, collapsed in the chair which starred Tony Randall (as Felix) and breaking up the regular card nights. “Actors Jay Corr, Bert Parlevliet, Paul Jack Klugman (as Oscar). The TV series was Holcroft and Justin Hurst are the card playing broadcast from 1970 to 1975. “Both Lance as Oscar, and Tim as Felix, have mates and Judy Campbell and Kristina Gardner done a wonderful job bringing these diverse play sisters Cecily and Gwendolyn Pidgeon. “The play is written so well that the conclusion characters to life and audiences will be carried away by the antics and high farce that occurs in will take everyone by surprise,” said Mr Harris. The Odd Couple officially opened on Friday the play,” said Mr Harris. “Along with Tim and Lance, we have March 4 at 8pm and then performances are assembled a great ensemble cast who help to each Friday and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday build the comedy and provide the two main afternoon at 2pm. Do yourself a favour and revisit an old protagonists with plenty of issues to bounce off - whether it’s an unsuitable love interest or favourite.
Flickerfest is back THE 25th Anniversary of Australia’s Short Film Festival will makes its appearance in Port Macquarie on Saturday March 12 from 7pm at the Majestic Cinema. The 10-day festival kicked off with an ‘under the stars’ screening at the Bondi Pavilion in January before touring to many regional areas, which rarely have an opportunity to view this collection of the world’s best short films. The Macleay had three successful screenings at Crescent Head, Gladstone and Kempsey in early February. Flickerfest remains a platform for celebrating the most entertaining and innovative short filmmaking from around the world. As Australia’s leading Academy Award accredited and BAFTA-recognised Short Film Festival, and the country’s largest Australian and international short film competition, the best of shorts from Australia and around the world, is not to be missed. ‘The Best of Australian Shorts’ will be screened and this will be a one-off chance to see these amazing shorts before they continue their journey around the world. Flickerfest’s Film Director, Bronwyn Kidd, is delighted that the short films are to screen in so many venues around Australia from February through to May. “This year’s short films from Australia, as well as overseas, won’t disappoint,” says Ms Kidd. Tickets are on sale now from the cinema box office. Go to www.majesticcinemas. com.au for more information or call 6583 8400. footytips
Good start, now let’s get serious SO, Round One behind us. How did you start the tipping season? If you had followed Your Local Independent then you would have scored six. Not bad for starters, considering typical upsets. Except for you die-hard Tigers fans, who would have thought the star-studded Warriors would have stumbled against Wests Tigers. Obviously that won’t be the last upset of the season, but at least we are starting to see the lay of the land. The Rabbits, Broncos, Cowboys and Bulldogs all showed they will be genuine top four chances in 2016, so hard to tip against them each week. However Wests Tigers, Dragons, Raiders and Titans indicated they will give tipsters plenty of food for thought. Here we go for Round Two. Good luck!: Panthers v Bulldogs (Thurs March 10, 7.05pm Pepper Stadium, Sydney): Panthers were disappointing in their opening round loss to the Raiders, whereas the Bulldogs showed the same tough tenacity the club is renowned for in their win over Manly. Penrith will probably be without injured stars Matt Moylan and James Segeyaro. They will improve, but not enough to stage their first win. • Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs Broncos v Warriors (Fri March 11, 7.05pm Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Buckle up because this will be a corker! The premiership favourites (Brisbane) v the team touted as the big improvers. Throw in the Bennett Factor and the explosive Kiwi power and this game will ignite. The Warriors were ordinary in their opener, displaying their biggest annual flaw – an inability to be consistently solid for 80 minutes. Patches of brilliance isn’t enough. On the flip side the Broncos kicked straight into gear in their opening round. This will also be Brisbane’s first game at home for 2016.
• Your Local Independent tips: Broncos. Raiders v Roosters (Sat, March 12, 2pm, GIO Stadium, Sydney): Injuries have already dented what looked like a promising start for the Raiders. Key playmakers Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer are both likely to be missing for this clash. Meanwhile the Roosters will be embarrassed into a better showing. Against Souths last week they ‘looked like Tarzan, played like Jane’, except that would be unfair to Jane. But they have too much quality to be that bad two weeks in a row. • Your Local Independent tips: Roosters. Rabbitohs v Knights (Sat, March 12, 4.30pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Things don’t look too optimistic for Nathan Brown’s Knights. They are away again and this time to the Rabbits, who were awesome in Rd 1. The only light on the horizon is the Rabbitohs’ casualty ward which is expected to include Reynolds and Sutton. However Sam Burgess will be even better with a game under his belt and brother George and Luke
for high-risk punters. Again, no major reason why Craig Bellamy can’t yell his team to another win. However the Storm have a nasty habit of losing to teams they should belt. Also the Titans have a new belief in 2016, despite no-one rating them. They are one team that can be the dark horses of 2016. They found their attack despite the wet conditions last week. Let’s go for the upset! • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Tigers v Sea Eagles (Monday, March 14 6pm, Leichhardt Oval, Syd): Despite plenty of quality players out, the Tigers showed in their opener against the Warriors that they are top eight hopes in 2016. Manly’s fans will already be eyeing rookie coach Trent Barrett with scepticism. Manly are still quality and they will be better this week. • Your Local Independent tips: Sea Eagles.

Keary should both be back from suspension. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs. Eels v Cowboys (Sat, March 12, 6.30pm, Pirtek Stadium, Sydney): If you are looking for an upset, maybe here is your chance. No reason why the Cows shouldn’t tick two in a row, however mentally they will be down after long celebrations, English trip, then their opening win and they are away. Eels looked promising last week. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys. Sharks v Dragons (Sunday, March 13, 3pm, Shark Park, Sydney): Sharks will be sweating on Paul Gallen’s fitness. There will be plenty of home support, however as stated last week, the Dragons have an added steel in 2016 and showed that in a narrow loss to the Storm their opener. • Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Storm v Titans (Sunday, March 13, 5.30pm, AAMI Park, Melb): Here is upset Number Two

That’s oarsome! THE Central District’s Rowing Association (CDRA) Championships are always a fiercely contested regatta due to the points on offer for the winning teams, as well as the prestige of being named the region’s best performing club. Of the 76 events on offer for competitors, Port Macquarie crews participated in 28 races and performed strongly to place either first or second in 19 of the races entered. Most of the Port Macquarie rowers entered multiple events across the weekend and were kept busy manoeuvring craft on and off the water and staying hydrated and relaxed between races. “It can almost be more exhausting preparing for the races than the actual racing itself,” says Trish Bulic, a long-time member of the PMRC. Club Captain Brian Glawson said: “I’m delighted with everyone’s commitment and their results over the weekend, particularly with the adverse weather conditions on Saturday making it challenging for some of our less experienced rowers.”
Port Macquarie’s winning Men’s C Grade Masters rowing team from left to right: Alan McCartney, Darby Munro, Deb Gardner (cox), Adam Causley, Mick Watts, Ray Harwood, Warwick Fisher, Brian Glawson and Steve Thomas The women’s eight, which was due to race at CDRA for the first time in the club’s 31 year history, was affected by Saturday’s bad weather resulting in not enough teams entered and organisers deciding not to run the race. However the Port Macquarie men’s eight made
up for the girl’s disappointment winning gold in their C grade Men’s Masters Division. Experienced rower Ray Harwood said: “The crew rowed one of their most composed races and the win was a great result making the many 6am training sessions worthwhile.”
finally Bianca Williams and Carissa Davidson came ninth. All three teams were coached by ‘Chalkie’ Bob Smith and were featured in Your Local Independent when they won gold, silver and bronze at the Stramit Country Surf Life Saving Championships at South West Rocks on February 6 and 7. Proud mum, Mrs Alicia Bales, commented: “All the girls did brilliantly, especially as they are all at the younger end of the age bracket. “All the results were very close for the final,” remarked Leanne Goggin. “It was literally ‘toenails’ between the results.” Other achievements at the 2016 NSW Surf
Life Saving Age Championships included a bronze medal for Harry Askew from South West Rocks SLSC in the U10 Male Surf Race; and two fifth placings for the Port Macquarie SLSC teams competing in the U12 Male Board Rescue (Ty-Jesse Brabant and Jesse Hiatt) and the U13 Female Beach Relay for the Port Macquarie A team of Mirren Davies, Elizabeth Duffy, Freja Hamer and Ava Sinclair. Grahame Buckley was a life member of the Wauchope Bonnie Hills Surf Life Saving Club. Grahame Buckley was also a well know rugby league identity. He made his first-grade debut for the St George Dragons during the 1978 season and made 55 appearances in total over a span of seven seasons including being involved in the
The next regatta for the club will be the State Masters Championships to be held mid-May at The Sydney International Regatta Centre. If you would like to be introduced to the joys of rowing visit the website at www. portmacquarierowingclub.com.au.
Success veiled in sadness WAUCHOPE-BONNIE Hills Surf Life Saving Club’s successful assault on the 2016 NSW Surf Life Saving Age Championships has been veiled in sadness following the death of club stalwart Grahame Buckley. Grahame, 58, died during training last week. However his memory certainly lifted the club’s competitors at the championships, contested at Ocean Beach, Umina on the Central Coast. In fact all three junior girls’ in the under 10-13 years two-person rescue and resuscitation teams from the club managed to win through eight heats to compete in the final. Mia Bales and Piper Searle came fourth, with Kiera Alchin and Jadzia Stronell seventh, and
