Mayor’s fresh approach By BARBARA DYER

PETA Pinson is a mix of all that is strong, driven and determined, tempered by what, she acknowledges, are feminine qualities. “I believe that, though I was voted in for my abilities, being the first female Mayor of the Port Macquarie-Hastings area will bring more balance to the Council chambers,” says Mayor Pinson. “There will now be three strong female representatives. “I believe that men and women think differently and problem solve differently which will bring a new perspective to Council decision making.” The community which elected her can expect to see a very different attitude, with the new Mayor determined her term will be one of transparency. “The community owns the information on how Council operates,” she says. “I am all about making that information readily available to the community and have heard from many people about their frustration in getting answers to legitimate questions. “I believe greater transparency will build trust between the Council and the community we represent. “I will also be wanting to ensure we spend ratepayer money wisely, with infrastructure delivered to a standard, and not just a price.” Peta Pinson is the daughter of an army soldier, but it is her grandparents who raised her and supported her throughout her life. She struck out for independence early in life, both financially and romantically. “I left high school to get a job and pay the mortgage on my first house when I was 18,” the Mayor says. “And soon I will celebrate nearly 30 years married to Craig with whom I have two children, Ashleigh, 27, and Brendan, 25, who is married to Teleise. I am also grandmother to one super cute grandson, Jaxon who is 18 months old.” Peta says she has a passion for politics and social justice. She is committed to her job and giving her best. “I like work, but I spend too much time there,” she admits. “If there is a deadline for something I will push myself to achieve it.” When it comes to holidays, Peta says her ideal break would be on a ship, where there is nothing to do except relax. “I love cruising,” she says. “Travel is a great love of mine and my husband’s and if I have a bucket list, it is to visit so many places in the world that we have not yet seen, working our way there as the years go by.” And her hobbies? “Shopping!” she laughs.

Peta Pinson, the newly-elected first female Mayor of the Port Macquarie-Hastings region, believes greater transperancy will build more trust between Council and the community

“Especially shopping for shoes.” Certainly her new job will give her plenty of time to test out new footwear, whether it be pounding the pavement as she stays in contact with the community that has elected her, or attending the numerous events which will make demands on her time. But Peta is up for the challenges and the changes that they bring. “My philosophy on life is that, if you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got,” says Peta. “I believe in change. Change is good and brings with it new opportunities and new energy. “In my life there have been a few occasions when I have asked myself ‘What were you

get to know Family? Small and precious Tourism? Underdeveloped and has so much future potential Work/life balance? Searching for it Relaxation? A good book or movie Wine? Always with cheese or chocolate thinking?’. But looking back though I realise I would never have known what I was capable of if I had not tried something new and beyond my comfort zone. “I think the motto that best sums me up as a person is ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try again’. “It is those types of people who are my role models and inspiration. “I am inspired by people who won’t and don’t give up. They are the real heroes and role models to me. “They can be any age, any race, any religion and any gender. The people who succeed in the face of adversity. “Last September, I met Turia Pitt at a business conference in Coffs Harbour.

“I told her I was standing as Mayor and she signed a book for me with the words ‘never give up’. “As we know, I did not win that election, but looked at that message during this campaign. “People like Turia inspire people like me.” But, for the next three years at least, it could be that Peta Pinson will inspire others. How would her friends describe her? “I think they would say I was generous, compassionate, chatty, intense, fair, strong and driven,” says Peta. So, is our new Mayor afraid of nothing? “Frogs,” she laughs. “Frogs! I am terrified of them!” But, she is not afraid of where her new path will lead her. “Now that I am older (almost 50) I try not to look too far ahead,” she says. “I don’t have a 10-year plan, for example. “I have realised that by constantly looking down the track you are not paying attention to what is happening now. “I try to stay more in the present and focus on what is going on there with a plan for the future instead.” • See Q&A with Mayor Pinson, Page 6

The community has spoken so now all let’s work together From the Heart... Sandy Mackenzie HOW exciting! The Hastings community witnessed history being made on Friday, August 4, 2017, with the election and declaration of PMHC’s first ever lady mayor, Peta Pinson. The result came after preferences were counted in favour of Peta by 873 votes ahead of Rob Turner. It was a close race, right to the end – but, it was also an outright win to Peta in both the primary and preference votes - end of story! The community has spoken and from the conversations I’ve had, most are excited for the change of leadership in the community first and foremost, closely followed by change in how PMHC consults, manages and delivers infrastructure such as roads, sporting facilities and other public amenities projects with ratepayers’ money and last but not least, changes to the levels of accountability and complete transparency within management of PMHC. The message I get loud and clear, there is no accountability and this needs to be stopped. Basically the community is sick of throwing good money after bad, while being slugged with the rate rise we were never going to have. The rate rise that would have been 52.4% (according to a notation in the IPART documentation) if it had not been brought to the attention of the community by Peta Pinson at

the 2016 election! I noted with interest – the detractors had started well before the result was called and to be honest I am absolutely amazed at how blinded by total bull…. these people are. It is always the same people and some of their attacks are not just totally misguided and misinformed but outright malicious! Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for everyone having their own opinion and voicing it – but opinion can often be far from fact and fact can be distorted to fit an opinion – it is called having an agenda. Lordy, there were some agendas behind this mayoral by-election and the majority of the community saw right through it! Without going into it all – the general plan was for the preference votes from Intemann, Turner and Edwards to get Lisa or Rob over the line, should Peta win the popular vote, which would have kept the bloc in Council rock solid. The same ploy as voting above or below the line last year – takes advantage of the lazy voter and takes the chosen one over the line. The difference this election? People did not want more of the same. If they bothered to preference, they did not preference as was expected. The plan backfired. The reality is while pointing the finger at Peta and manufacturing untruths – there were deals being made – Sharon Griffiths and Peta Pinson were the only two mayoral candidates that can say they ran as independents and earned every vote they received. Interestingly enough, at the time of writing, Sharon Griffiths is also the only sitting Councillor who has bothered to contact or extend congratulations to Peta Pinson on her win. Where’s the manners? So! No matter what sour grapes stories you hear from the noisy minority, because they are

now the minority. Let that sink in people - they are now the minority - Peta Pinson was elected in fairly and squarely by the Hastings community, as an Independent. No ifs, buts, nos or maybes. It is fact! There is absolutely no doubt Peta has a mammoth task ahead of her and it isn’t going to happen overnight or without support. Support needs to come from all levels of the community and most importantly from the sitting Councillors, GM, directors, managers and staff of the council. I know there are many staff looking forward to having a fresh, yet experienced set of eyes in the organisation and then there are those who don’t like change and those who literally will/should be crapping their pants! The community has chosen their new leader and aren’t going to be too impressed to see any pushback from the organisation they have chosen Peta to lead. But, pushback we have already seen. OMG, Rob Turner, what were you thinking? After a flurry of phone calls this morning (Monday) I watched the interview on Prime7 News from August 3. Sorry, but that was a woeful display of spitting the dummy and being a sore loser – is this the first time you have not got your own way? Quite frankly – that interview, coupled with Lisa’s bitter comments on Facebook last week were deplorable! I hope that is not an indication of the attitude of the other Councillors – the exact attitude that Adam Roberts spoke to YLI about last year when he resigned from his role as Councillor, the same attitude that I hear about all the time – holier than thou – law unto themselves – misogynistic boys club – bullies! The exact attitude that is all about ego and feathers its own

nest! Here is a newsflash! The line regarding this type of behaviour was officially drawn in the sand on Friday August 3, 2017, when it was declared Peta Pinson is the new Mayor-elect of PMHC. This is the dawning of a new era with a new leader because the community voted for change. We do not want your ‘business as usual, this is how we do things, she’ll have to fit in with us’ attitude. It sucks big time! It’s not acceptable! It will not be tolerated! It’s time for the sitting Councillors to be honest. You are either in the job for the good of the entire community, as you were voted in for and support Peta Pinson to make sure necessary changes can be made, or you are in it for your own benefit, in opposition to change and so out of touch with the community you probably need to pack up your baseball bat and go. PS: I spoke to Sharon Griffiths last week and she asked me to clarify my column last week with the following statement: “I decided to run for Mayor for a couple of reasons. Community members were asking me to run and it gave the community the opportunity for choice. Spending 10 days at the Port Macquarie pre-poll has also given me loads of feedback which is valuable to understanding community priorities and issues. Unfortunately, I was unavailable on election day as I had a prior family engagement that I had committed to well before the election date was set. I look forward to continuing as a councillor, assisting community members, finding means to deliver community priorities and improve council functions.” Thanks for the clarification and honesty Sharon.

Gaol show a perfect escape By SUE PATERICK THE imposing ruins of Trial Bay Gaol at South West Rocks (SWR) pierced the aquamarine sky last Sunday morning (August 6), making the perfect backdrop for the ninth Sculpture in the Gaol exhibition. Inside the locally-quarried pink and grey granite walls, hundreds of people had gathered for this annual art event’s official opening and to admire the 60 sculptures on display. Showing off their artworks alongside these talented sculptors were entries from numerous local schools; including Kinchela, Smithtown, South West Rocks and Stuarts Point Primary Schools, plus Melville and Kempsey High Schools, the Macleay Vocational College and Kempsey Adventist School. This interesting and thought-provoking exhibition attracts more than 5000 visitors to Trial Bay every year and is a great venue for artists to showcase their works to a wide audience. The Gaol is located in glorious Arakoon National Park where the fishing-hook-shaped coastline snares Trial Bay and dangles its sheltered beach tantalizingly toward the setting sun. The bay was named after a shipwreck in 1816 when 13 convicts seized the brig Trial while it was anchored in Sydney Harbour, and sailed it north with eight to 10 crew and passengers still aboard. All hands vanished when the brig was wrecked off Trial Bay. The Gaol was opened as a public works prison in 1886, and then used to house German internees during WWI. To wander among its amazing ruins is an eerie experience, but to see it filled with sculptures is moving for people of all ages.

Crowds flocked to the official opening of this year’s annual Sculpture in the Gaol held at the imposing ruins of Trial Bay Gaol at South West Rocks Retired Kempsey High teacher Rob McAulay she said. thought the sculptures were an inspiration to Fellow student Isabella Ahern thought the everyone. sculptures were very creative and unique. As did Port Macquarie’s Deborah Sallaway, Friends Wayne Tracey, from Copacabana who was experiencing Sculpture in the Gaol for on the Central Coast, and Tony Murphy, from the first time and enjoying her first trip to SWR the Hunter’s Lake Munmorah, have both been in 25 years. coming to SWR for more than 30 years. “About 10 of us came up on a little bus trip They love the place. with Limitless Tours, and I’m really enjoying the Wayne reckoned the sculptures were fantastic exhibition,” she said. and interesting. “I find it interesting how the artists have put “It’s spectacular and really worth a look,” nature and their experiences in their artworks.” added Tony. Young Mahila Hoskins from St Josephs “The thought that has gone in to it is Primary School thought the sculptures were amazing.” awesome. MC and musician for this year’s ‘Sculpture “Some are very delicate and have a lot of in the Gaol’, Craig Stewart, started the official detail and must have taken a long time to make,” proceedings.

As part of the Welcome to Country, Bennelong then played the didgeridoo and Auntie Cheryl Blair welcomed the huge crowds in the local Dunghutti language. Kempsey Mayor Liz Campbell opened the exhibition and acknowledged the Dunghutti nation. She said it was a pleasure to be here in ‘the most beautiful place in the world’ and to welcome artists, school children, locals, visitors and art enthusiasts to such an amazing event. “This is the best one ever,” she said, beaming. Mayor Campbell also acknowledged everyone involved in organising the event, particularly the South West Rocks Chamber of Commerce, National Parks and Wildlife Service and all the sponsors. “Events like this significantly help to attract locals and visitors to this stunning corner of our valley,” she said. “It’s very important for the prosperity of the Macleay Valley that we continue to offer a variety of attractions that keep visitors coming here and locals engaged. “After nine years Sculpture in the Gaol is a leading example of how to provide creative fun for all, and is something that keeps people returning to enjoy the artistic talent of this beautiful and historic setting.” While admiring these magnificent sculptures in one of the most dramatic and beautiful places on earth, pick up an Escapee Trail map and checkout the sculptures around the seaside town of South West Rocks. The winning sculptures in each event are selected by People’s Choice. The exhibition runs until Saturday, September 2 and is open daily from 9am to 4.30pm. Cost is $11 per person, $8 with a concession and $30 for a family of two adults and two children.

Q&A with our first female Mayor BARBARA DYER’S Q&A with new Mayor PETA PINSON Q. The by-election was a very close result coming down to preferences, with you becoming Mayor by fewer than 900 votes. Did you expect it to be so close? A. To be honest I thought I may lose by preferences even though I had won on the primary vote. Three of the five candidates were preferencing each other and I was unsure how I would be able to compete with that. As it turned out the community decided on who they wanted to preference and I was able to hold my lead to become the next Mayor. Q. Rob Turner has said he believes he lost the election because he is a sitting councillor and people simply did not want to go back to the polls to replace him in the event he was elected Mayor. Do you agree it was just a case of people not wanting to go to another byelection in three months? A. I cannot agree because, collectively, 28,267 people voted for the three sitting councillors as opposed to 17,590 who voted for me in the primary vote. This suggests to me that not everyone considered the return to the polls for the second by-election as the reason for voting. I think the voters made their decision based on wanting a change for our Council. Q. At what point did you start to feel confident about becoming our next Mayor? A. After the preference count was almost over and I received word late on Wednesday afternoon that I would cross the line. Q. Our next Mayor, and our first female mayor. You have been elected because you are the best person for the job, but do you think ‘being female’ will bring something to the role? A. Yes, I believe that through my election as Mayor there will be some more balance to the Council chambers. There will now be three strong female representatives. I believe that men and women think differently and problem solve differently which will bring a new perspective to Council decision making. Q. Transparency has been a theme for you both in this campaign and the 2016 campaign. How will you bring this about in the very Council which you consider has lacked transparency in the past? A. Transparency is about making information readily available to the community. The community is the one who owns the information in how Council operates. Many people have complained to me that getting answers from Council to legitimate questions has been difficult and, at times, frustrating. Transparency leads to trust which builds better relationships. I would like to see the relationship between the community and Council improve and I believe greater transparency will assist in that process. Q. Given a comment by one councillor that

New Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor Peta Pinson it was hoped you would fit in, did you intend “fitting in”? A. I intend on representing my community as an individual and that means working with the other eight elected councillors towards the best interests of our community. I do not believe it is a matter of fitting in, but rather a matter of working together as individuals in order to ensure that Port Macquarie-Hastings area ratepayers’ money is spent wisely, and that infrastructure is delivered to a standard, and not just a price. Q. There are those who will say that your position as managing director of Stabilcorp road pavement repair and maintenance company may in the future present a conflict of interest. What is your response to that? A. In the week prior to the lead-up to the election, I resigned my position as Managing Director of Stabilcorp. There is no conflict of interest because my company has never contracted to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. I have publically stated that while I am elected, my company will not submit any tenders for work with Council. Further to that, my husband’s company MCRS will also abstain from seeking

to submit tenders for work with Council. There is no conflict of interest. Q. You felt the 5.39 per cent rate increase was too much, hurting, quote: “the disadvantaged … our seniors, who are struggling already to pay high rates”. What would you have liked to happen? A. I would have liked Council to review its own operating costs and manage finances to reduce wasteful practices before going to the ratepayer to fund shortfalls in the Council budget. I will never vote for rate rises (SRV). Q. You are not only the new Mayor, you are also new to Council. How are you feeling about the dynamics of the Council team? A. Like anyone who starts a new job, there is some general adjustment to a new role. I campaigned to be elected to the position and now I look forward to creating workable and positive relationships with the Council team. I would imagine the dynamics will change over time. Q. There will be a period of adjustment and, given your recent dealings with this Council, a few bridges to build. How are you feeling about the challenge?

A. I am looking forward to working through any challenges before me. I know that there are some discussions which must be had in order for us all to move forward. I intend to speak to each councillor individually to discuss their visions for the future and what they see is important to them to achieve for the rest of this term. I look forward to building a solid relationship with the General Manager over the coming years and am excited by the possibilities ahead of us. Q. You have said you are ‘deeply honoured and humbled’ that people in the region have voted you in as Mayor. How do you feel about the enormous challenges ahead? A. I am proud and honoured to have made history by being elected as Port Macquarie -Hastings Council’s first female Mayor. It is an enormous responsibility and the community has placed their trust in me to lead the Council into the future. I will take it one day at a time and seek out my many mentors to help me navigate the way. I have many friendships with people who have many years of life experience and I am confident that their wisdom and experience will be of great help to me in the years to come. Q. Prior to the 2016 election, you said your entrepreneurial background and focus on innovative solutions were positive attributes required for the mayoral role. Now you are Mayor. What other attributes and skills do you bring to the job? A. I consider myself to be a great learner and listener. I thrive on learning new skills and enjoy listening to the viewpoints of others. I do not have all the answers and will listen to our community on what the expectations are. I am also a win/ win thinker which means that I look for the path of least resistance in order to achieve a result. I also am relationship-orientated and think that building strong relationships is the foundation to success in anything you do. I intend to build strong relationships with the community groups, business groups and sporting groups during my three-year term. Q. You have denied an affiliation with The Nationals. How did these rumours begin? A. I think these rumours began because I have over time formed friendships with many people who are connected to the National Party. I am not a member of any political party and I do not intend on joining a political party. I have been asked to do so by a number of groups in the past to which I have declined. I consider myself to be an independent thinker and I stood alone in my campaign in September and again this time around. I have many friends from all walks of life and from various political and religious persuasions. The rumours are simply rumours. I know what the truth is, and I am more than comfortable with that. Q. What do you mean when you say you ‘stood alone’? A. My husband and I have financed my own campaign and I have not received donations from anyone. I did not preference anyone and relied on the vote of the community to bring me to this moment.

SWR Seniors keeps fun alive FOR 32 years the South West Rocks (SWR) Senior Citizens have been bringing older people together to just have some fun. President Carol Foran thinks it’s a friendly group. “It’s company for older people who would otherwise be sitting at home not doing anything,” she said. “Some of our members don’t get out that much.” The late Bill Bale held a public meeting in 1985 to see if anyone would be interested in forming a group for senior citizens. He felt such a group would be a wonderful asset for the local community. Another local resident, Dolly Ingram - as she was then, was also instrumental in helping form what would become an active volunteer organisation. At a luncheon in July, 2017 this community-conscious group raised $1400 for the Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day appeal to help fight breast cancer. The SWR Senior Citizens also hold a range of interesting and fun activities each week. There is a guest speaker at its regular meetings on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 10am at the SWR Residential Care Conference Centre in Gregory Street. Every second Thursday the group’s wordsmiths meet for Scrabble at the conference centre from 10am. The men run a Toy Boy Shed

each Thursday morning from 8am in a garage at Horseshoe Bay, where they make wooden cots and children’s tables and chairs, plus wooden birds for the garden. From 9am on Friday mornings the SWR Senior Citizens can be found in the SWR Country Club’s auditorium playing indoor bowls. At 1pm on Friday afternoons there is bingo at the conference centre. On the third Wednesday of each month, if this lively group isn’t off enjoying an outing or a coach trip, there is a games day at the conference centre with nibbles, sandwiches and tea and coffee. At the beginning of each year the SWR Senior Citizens have a barbeque at Horseshoe Bay, and on the last Saturday in November or the first Saturday in December they have a Christmas party for about 100 people at the SWR Country Club. To warm up in June or July they hold a soup day and serve a variety of hearty and delicious home-cooked soups. Every year the SWR Senior Citizens also go on a holiday for five or six days and have been on a cruise up the Queensland coast and to Cooma in the Snowy Mountains.

For their next holiday in 2018, the group is discussing another cruise down south to Tasmania this time. On a coach trip last month they explored the Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard in Port Macquarie. Classified by the National Trust of Australia, the homestead and outbuildings were built in 1862 and have been authentically restored. This volunteer-run, not-for-profit enterprise, cushioned in 2.8 hectares of beautiful gardens with 150-yearold plants, produces six exclusive wines at its established vineyard and also boasts a dedicated museum. “Douglas Vale was a great venue and a very nice experience,” Carol said. “It was lovely to see the old homestead and the grapes growing.” A bonus for this trip was a wine tasting and enjoying some scones with jam and cream. The SWR Senior Citizens has 150 to 200 financial members with 60 or more turning up at the monthly meetings. If you or someone you know would like to become a member just turn up at a monthly meeting or contact Carol on 65665586.

President of the South West Rocks Senior Citizens, Carol Foran, enjoys helping get older people together to have fun and make friends. She also volunteers at the Anglican Op-Shop.

Creating new enterprising options for young people IT is well established that traditional pathways to further study and university have dominated schools and universities but many young people need a more practical and enterprising pathway. At Port Macquarie Community College, we try to create new enterprising options for young people to explore. That’s why we’re creating a ‘Maker Space’. We have a big ‘empty shell’ in Albert Circuit to convert to classrooms and workshop spaces for young people’s handson new, creative ventures. These may include the Deadly Treadlies bike recycling project, popular in the Northern Territory for many years, as well as small engine maintenance, and screen printing for streetwear and other products, woodworking, all kinds of creative arts, IT and design, 3D printing basically all things to do with making stuff! To do this, we need your help! If you would like to support young people finding new ventures for their future development, please let us know if you’ve got spare equipment, tools, materials or time to give a helping hand. We have a wish list of equipment, tools and materials being put together and we will also need helpers to make over our makerspace so please let us know if you would like to help! We are aiming to give youth the chance to succeed and to move forward to a bright and productive future. Call in and say hello sometime to see the range of imaginative options we’re trying to keep offering. We’re situated at 77 Hastings River Drive, at the bottom of Clifton Drive. Please ring 65837288 for details, or visit our website on www.skillslinktraining.com.au to see all our other programs and courses.

Grants for fish habitat action FUNDS Available To Improve Local Fish Habitats: I am encouraging community groups, local councils and individuals to apply for funding to improve local fish habitats through the NSW Government’s Habitat Action Grants Program. Small grants up to $2000 and large grants up to $40,000 are now available for community groups, councils and individuals. The NSW Government is investing over half a million dollars in funding from recreational fishing fees to improve creeks, rivers, estuaries and surrounding areas across the state. The Habitat Action Grants Program has proven to be very popular in previous years. Since 2009, the NSW Government has invested more than $4 million towards projects such as reducing erosion by stabilising river banks, removing invasive weeds and reestablishing native vegetation on riverbanks, removing barriers to fish movements as well as re-snagging waterways and restoring lost habitats. Applications for Habitat Action Grants are now open and close on Monday, September 18. For more information about the program, application forms and examples of past projects visit www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/hag or contact a Department of Primary Industries Fisheries

Manager on 6626 1396. Nominate A Carer: Nominations are now open for the NSW Carers Awards. The NSW Carers Awards aims to recognise and raise awareness of the valuable contribution unpaid carers make to the people they care for and the wider community. This is a great way to thank and acknowledge the significant contributions carers make to our community. I encourage anyone who knows a dedicated carer to put forth their nomination so their extraordinary contribution can be celebrated. Organisations, employers and education providers who demonstrate best practice in supporting carers can also be nominated for an Award. The 2017 NSW Carers Awards will coincide with this year’s Carers Week, which will run from October 15-21. To nominate a carer go to careforacarer.nsw.gov.au or call my office on 6584 0977. Entries close on August 31.

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

YOU may have heard in the news recently about the Federal Government’s PaTH Program and the internships now available to job seekers. But did you know that the PaTH Program has been up and running for some time now and seeing really positive results? As of May, 2017, our electorate of Cowper had the second highest number of young people find permanent employment through the PaTH Program – 130 young people in our region had found a job through PaTH. “PaTH” stands for “Prepare-Trial-Hire” and is a Coalition Government initiative to create more pathways for young people to move off welfare and into a job. Last week, I met with 19-year-old Lincoln Delaforce. Lincoln is now working at Port Macquarie’s Crown Oysters and they’re very pleased with Lincoln’s job performance. But Lincoln probably wouldn’t be working for Crown Oysters right now if it wasn’t for him taking full advantage of the opportunities given to him through PaTH. PaTH opens a number of doors for local businesses and job seekers, and I encourage those looking to hire or be hired to visit www.jobactive.gov.au/path for more information.

Inept use of a made-up word I WAS at the bowling club when a fellow walked up to me and shoved a piece of paper in my hand. The heading said ineptoracy. It had a spelling mistake. The heading should have been ineptocracy. But who was I to judge? After all, the word was unusual, so maybe it was a new word. He might even have made up the word. As I looked closer the word, allegedly from the Department of Defence, had an explanation that led me to believe it was a made-up word, similar to ones that cross my desk on a daily basis. The explanation said: “A system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society are least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.” Now, there are enough clues there to convince you that it is a made-up word. But peopled are making up words every day. Several people are are making up definitions for inept every day. I qualify for most of them, although I hesitate at stupid, screwball, witless and a few other words. So I checked.

The Camden Haven Concert Band

my

LAURIE BARBER

I consulted Collins, Heinemann, Macquarie, Webster, and Readers Digest (Readers Digest said “an inept cook” but I by-passed that). I checked Johnson and the First Real Dictionary from 1604. Another Readers Digest dictionary in my possession said inept meant ”inefficient, incompetent, unskilled untrained, unqualified, without dexterity, bungling, ineffective, ineffectual, awkward, clumsy, maladroit”. I would question unskilled. The most ept person in the world (yes, there is such a word) has to get a skill somewhere. Maybe he should have gone somewhere else to get his skills. My 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary didn’t also include ineptocracy, so I confidently expected it was a made-up word. My big dictionary listed several words that included inept. They included inept, inepticality, ineptitude,

ineptly and ineptness, but no ineptocracy. The word came from middle French, if you forget the Latin. The earliest use of the word inept, that I could find, was in 1603. In that year Body of Man said: “A ineptitude to learn sheweth a drie and different braine”. In the same year Leviath talked about the differences between apt and inept. In October 1895 Cornhill Magazine said “the lawyers of the land were singularly inept when our soldiers and sailors were at their best”. Under inepticality the big dictionary said somebody who was a very pleasant person showed attacks of total inepticality. Ineptitude meant the quality of being totally inept. Ineptly meant in a totally inept manner, even the quality of being inept. Ept came into the language very late, would you believe 1938, as an antonym for inept. It meant, according to my big dictionary, adroit, appropriate, effective. But I wonder if ept came from the word apt Apt, according to my big dictionary, started life in 1791 to mean fitting. It gradually changed to “to make fit” and then to suit. Probably not, although some dictionaries say yes. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Support for dyslexic students By BARBARA DYER

“Dyslexia

can be hereditary and it is a lifelong challenge, but children with dyslexia can learn to read

AS many as 25 per cent of Year 4 students in the region lack literacy skills and would benefit from a program designed to support children with dyslexia, according to Kelly King, president of the Dyslexia Support Mid North Coast Group. “The occurrence of dyslexia is widespread with 10 per cent of the population being directly affected and up to 20 per cent on the dyslexia continuum,” Ms King said. “This means that in every classroom, there may be three up to five students with dyslexia, who will struggle to participate on the same basis as their peers.” Ms King said these children would greatly benefit from two free seminars in Port Macquarie on August 21, for teachers and parents. “A learning support co-ordinator who helped transform the way her school teaches early literacy will be visiting Port Macquarie to share her experience and secrets behind their literacy success,” said Ms King “Dyslexia can be hereditary and it is a lifelong challenge, but children with dyslexia can learn to read. “And the same teaching practices that help overcome dyslexia can greatly improve any child’s reading ability.” Sonja O’Connor of Bishop Druitt College in Coffs Harbour will conduct two seminars at the Port Macquarie Library. Ms O’Connor has a Masters in Special Education and is an Associate Member of the Australian Dyslexia Association (AMADA). “Working in this area, I soon realised that my university training had not suitably trained me to teach or remediate in the area of teaching children to read,” said Ms O’Connor. “I set about finding the answers and, in the

Children love to read but up to 25 per cent of Year 4 students in the region lack literacy skills process, discovered my passion for working with students with dyslexia and training teachers to meet the needs of kids falling behind in literacy.” Ms King said the strategies used at Bishop Druitt College had lifted literacy rates for all children, not only those diagnosed with dyslexia. “Dyslexia Support Mid North Coast recommends the seminars to parents if their child is struggling with reading, literacy and attention,”

she said. “It’s not necessary to have a diagnosis of specific learning disability or dyslexia to attend. In fact, many children are undiagnosed, but struggle daily in the classroom.” Ms King said that while the incidence of dyslexia was no higher in regional or city centres, a lack of services outside major hubs made diagnosis and support harder to manage. She said schools were effectively a frontline

for diagnosis. “By the time a child reaches Year 3 or 4 before the problem is discovered, they are so far behind they may never catch up,” Ms King said. “Our aim with these seminars is to help close the gap through early diagnosis.” The seminars explore the key characteristics and common misconceptions of dyslexia and practical strategies to support students’ literacy. Both presentations will be held at Port Macquarie Library on Monday, August 21, with a teacher seminar from 3.30pm-5.30pm and a parent seminar 6pm-8pm. Supporting

Council awarded

Raise your voice because there are definite health benefits from being in a choir

Sing! It’s good for you Concert celebrates local choirs By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC FEELING down? Join a choir. According to the Hastings Choristers, people who sing in a group are happier than those who don’t. “The research very clearly tells us now that if you sing in a choir or a group with other people, the health benefits are amazing, the endorphins go just like exercise,” said Robyn Ryan, Music Director of the Hastings Choristers. “All cultures since history was recorded sang together and that gave a sense of community and a sense of well being. People who sing in choirs are actually happier and healthier than those who don’t.” Robyn says the health benefits of singing together are spreading throughout the mid north coast. “We have a lot of choirs locally in the Hastings area, and even some in aged care facilities,” said Robyn. “Arts Health Australia do a lot with creative ageing and it’s seen as very important for older people to be singing and doing arts and activities, so the research is out there and people are starting to catch on.”

Not even an untrained voice will stop people from receiving the benefits of choir. “I am involved in four choirs and I have people who don’t have the best voices, but you know what, they go home from rehearsals with a smile on their face and they feel amazing” said Robyn. “And they do get better.” The Hastings Choristers will be celebrating choir in their upcoming concert ‘Choral Kaleidoscope’. “This concert is a celebration of choral music presented by six choirs from across the mid north coast,” explained Robyn. “Each choir will perform a bracket of songs reflecting their own repertoire choices. “Company of Voices are coming from Forster, Kantabile are coming from Taree, Kala Rava are from Port Macquarie, then we’ve got an elite children’s choir called Bel Canto from Tacking Point Public School. I direct the children who are aged between 9-12 years and they sing in the Opera House every year. They are very talented. “We’ve also got my two adult choirs, the ladies from Cantabile and then we’ve got my mixed adult choir Cantorus. The audience is guaranteed a really varied program.”

ABBEY & VIDEO Have moved to Tritto’s old sport store next to Coastline Credit Union

The concert will include everything from pop, gospel, classic, folk, and everything in between. “It’s really unique to have such a wide variety,” Robyn said. “The audience loves it because they are listening to one music genre and then straight after another comes on, so there’s a really nice change.” Many locals will already have seen the talent displayed by the Hastings Choristers at their most recent show called ‘In the Mood’. “We were absolutely thrilled with out last concert, we had more people at our last concert than we have ever had,” said Robyn. “We expected around 100 people in the club and we catered for 100 people, but 240 people came. We had such a great response.” The Hastings Choristers concert ‘Choral Kaleidoscope’ will open on Sunday, August 27, at the Port Macquarie Uniting Church from 2pm with the doors opening at 1.30pm. The Uniting Church has no stairs, making it very comfortable and suitable for elderly people. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for under 18s. Tickets can be purchased at the door or at the Glasshouse Box Office on 6581 8888 or www.glasshouse.org.au

PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council have been recognised for hosting a series of exceptional Youth Week events in 2017 and for promoting disability inclusion across the region at a recernt awards ceremony held in Sydney. At the NSW Local Government Week Awards, Council took out the award for ‘Best Local Youth Week Program’ and received a Highly Commended award in the Disability Inclusion category for their ‘Access Friendly Businesses Program’. Each year, Council hosts a range of activities in support of Youth Week that focus on inclusion, skills development, well-being and creativity with this year’s events including a youth music conference, skateboard competition and initiatives raising awareness for youth homelessness. “Our Youth Advisory Council work hard to bring together Youth Week each and every year and to be recognised as having the best program in the state in 2017 is an outstanding achievement,” said Director Jeffery Sharp. Council’s efforts to promote disability inclusion were also recognised, and while not receiving the top gong, were celebrated for their commitment to bringing businesses closer to people with disability, and championing places that are disability inclusive. “We’ve worked in collaboration with the Access Committee to create a program that now road tests local businesses and tourism destinations and lists those who are disability friendly,” Mr Sharp said. So far more than twenty five businesses have been reviewed as being ‘access friendly’ under the program, with those businesses who are not accessible given practical advice.

CHARLES Sturt University (CSU) in Port Macquarie has gained significant recognition in NSW Mid North Coast after winning three awards at the recent region’s business awards. The campus won Business Excellence Awards as ‘Employer of Choice’ and for ‘Excellence in Sustainability’, while also achieving a Local Industry Award in the ‘Community and Education Services’ section. “Charles Sturt University is proud to have won these awards as a recent newcomer to the region,” said acting Head of CSU in Port Macquarie, Mr Greg Linsdell “We have drawn on our long, proud history of providing quality higher education in regional NSW and brought the best elements of this to Port Macquarie. “The awards recognise these qualities of sound employment prospects, sustainability and outstanding service to our local communities, which we will continue to develop for the ‘public good’ of Port Macquarie and the wider North Coast region. “Indeed, these awards reflect the essence of our institution encapsulated in ‘Yindyamarra Winhanganha’, a Wiradjuri phrase meaning, ‘the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in’.”

Pamper yourself to bliss and beauty

Bring nature into your special day FORMAL is out, free flowing is in when it comes to flowers. And Australian natives are the pick of the bridal bunch according to Leanne Davis, owner of Ellerslie Flowers in Kempsey. “The trend is for lots of colour with burgundy very popular in roses, Red Safari and carnations, complemented by silver foliage,” says Leanne.

“Our bush natives add bursts of texture while beach weddings bring out boho in simple mandelas, pathways of petals and floral archways. “Brides are also opting for installations such as flower walls and fragrant floral and leafy chandeliers. “The green forest theme is another beautiful

trend but, for something really unusual, we were inspired by a bride who had us make her floral jewellery. “We aim for unique dream bouquets and offer one-on-one private consultations for brides and other flower events. And please, don’t leave your flowers at the venue. Send guests home with fragrant reminders of your beautiful day.”

THERE is no denying that when a wedding day rolls around, all eyes are on the bride. If they are lucky, the bride will invite her bridesmaids, mum and future mother-in-law as well for a pampering session. Or she might just revel in some ‘me time’. Lush Skin & Beauty is Kempsey’s premier skin therapy clinic. At a time when a bride to be might be feeling a little stressed out, Lush Skin & Beauty is a haven, offering traditional beauty pampering with advanced medicalgrade skin treatments for the ultimate prewedding outing. Organising the big day might rob a bride to be of her glow, but Lush Skin & Beauty is ready with wedding packages or just some timeout and pampering for her and attendants. What could be more enjoyable than to lie back, be pampered and know that with every lotion, potion and treatment, you are being assured of looking your best on your wedding day.

Weddings Fine food gets great reception

ONCE the happy couple are wed, guests’ minds will naturally turn to the next big event – the reception. And the most memorable part of that will probably be the food. With a trend these days for cocktail receptions, finger foods, and casual but classy wedding catering, Tumblegum Bake House & Café ensures that guests will be talking about the food in glowing terms.

Right accessories create that perfect bridal look EVEN casual wedding attire can be given a special look with the right accessories and shoes. Louise McKeon of Harley&Rose Lifestyle and Fashion in West Kempsey says her boutique specialises in men’s suits and formal women’s wear. “High-low is a popular look in women’s dresses, with the high front and long at the back,” says Louise. “And to step it up a notch, we have some beautiful shoes and accessories. “Women are loving our On The Silk Road range of handmade jewellery from Byron Bay. “We have some gorgeous fine pieces and can also arrange to have the perfect piece made for the bride on her special day.” But, at Harley&Rose, it’s not always about

From the platter range of sandwiches and wraps to impressive cakes and tasty party foods, Tumblegum ensures that premium quality ingredients offer both taste and value for money. With locations in West Kempsey, Kempsey and Port Macquarie Tumblegum Bake House & Café offers a smorgasbord of foods, made fresh to cater for hungry receptions guests, cocktail parties, corporate gatherings and any function where the hosts want to impress.

the bride and Louise said their range of about 25 suits in diverse textures and colours catered to any groom, whether he wanted to go formal, or opt for the popular linen suits in earthy colours in sizes up to 42. “The trend is for the groom to wear a jacket, and the groomsmen complement his style with vests and crisp shirts without a jacket,” said Louise. And what we don’t have in stock, we can certainly order with a catalogue extending the range on offer.” Louise sources her clothing range from the southern fashion capitals of Sydney and Melbourne. “Whatever the special event, from a wedding to a school formal, our friendly staff are available to help and advise with a style to suit,” she says.

WHEN the wedding photographer says ‘smile’ Kempsey Dental Centre want to ensure the bride and groom have the brightest and best smiles possible. The best way to achieve that is through takehome teeth whitening. “Ideally, we’ll hear from the wedding party at least a month before the big day to carry out a check, take impressions for teeth whitening trays and a couple of weeks before the big day, start the procedure to ensure that on the wedding day, the bride’s and groom’s smiles are the biggest and brightest,” says practice manager Jessica Rose. “It’s a simple process after that, with the trays in for half an hour to an hour.

“To ensure an appointment in time for their wedding, we’d encourage the bride and groom to book their treatment the day they book the church.” Ms Rose said to complement the new smile, some people opted for Botox to banish any frown lines, or prevent them forming. With teeth whitened, and any worry lines wiped out, some brides might even go a step further by adding a sparkling gem to their teeth. “It’s only temporary and should never be a long-term thing, but it can add a bit more bling to the wedding day,” says Ms Rose. Just three ways to ensure the close-ups on the big day are as dazzling as possible.

Cellarbrations lifts bar on your big day GONE are the days when wedding guests are served just beer, wine or ‘buy your own’. And gone are the days when the bride and groom had to figure it all out for themselves. Simon Wetzler, of Cellarbrations West Kempsey, is more than happy to advise on the choice of drinks, including the huge and evergrowing range of organic alcohol, preservativefree and even gluten-free options. “Our staff are really knowledgeable and the bride and groom can pretty much leave it to us to assess quantities of alcohol needed,” Simon said. “We drop off the drinks in eskies, and while

the couple are off enjoying their honeymoon we will return for the empties.” Taking it to the next step, Simon said Cellarbrations West Kempsey could help match the wines with the food; could advise on the type of glassware needed and even where to hire glasses. Simon said Cellarbrations West Kempsey enjoyed being part of the community and their Friday afternoon free sausage sizzles and sporting sponsorship was their way of giving back to the people who support them.

Annual concert will be a classic By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

TUNE into an afternoon of classical music. The Camden Haven Concert Band is gearing up for their annual concert - ‘A Classical Extravaganza’. This year’s theme is ‘A Classical Bouquet’, bringing the audience an exciting and varied musical selection through the classical musical eras, compiled by Musical Director and Conductor Iain Pole. “There’s quite a diverse range of music in the concert from spiritual and contemplative, cheeky and quirky to dramatic and bold, which showcases the range of music that we can play,” said Vicki Syme, Secretary of the Camden Haven Community Bands. “You’ll hear familiar tunes plus undiscovered gems by Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Bizet, Moussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, R Strauss, Gershwin and many more.” However, what sets this band apart from others is not only their range of music, but also their diverse age group. “There will be about 35 members performing at the Classical Extravaganza and they range in age from 10 years old through to 80 years old,” said Vicki. “Because we are a community band we really accept anybody, provided they have a basic reading of music and play an instrument. We think that music crosses all barriers of age. It brings together people of diverse age groups, and we have friends of many different ages and everyone gets together and has a good time.” The Camden Haven Community Bands Inc has been around since 1995 and is a not-forprofit organisation of volunteers who provide a community service playing at a variety of local events and venues, and they have some serious talent. “We have some very talented players and a lot of players have gone onto pursue careers in music,” Vicki said. “It’s a great platform for learning and sharing music.

Above and left: Members of the Camden Haven Concert Band. The band is about to present ‘A Classical Bouquet’ “We perform around 12-15 times a year at events such as Australia Day, the ANZAC Day march, Christmas Carols, school fetes, school concerts, street parades, and we especially like to play concerts to introduce the kids to music and different instruments.” The upcoming concert is a much more challenging concert than the community outdoor performances so Vicki hopes the community will come along and see all the musical instruments they can play. “The concert band consists of woodwind, brass, and percussion, it’s like an orchestra without the strings, but we do have a bass guitar player,” explained Vicki. “In the woodwinds there’s flutes, piccolo,

oboe, clarinets, bass clarinets, and saxophones. In the brass we’ve got trumpets and trombones, euphoniums, tuba, and the French horn. Then there’s the percussion - the drum kit, a couple of timpani - the big kettle drums, and we have a couple of people who play lots of the little percussion instruments as well.” Picking up a new skill is easy and fun according to the adult beginner band. “We have people who join the adult beginner band and as they get better and better they move onto the concert band,” said Vicki. “Some of them had never played an instrument or read music before but always wanted to and other people who just wanted to learn a different instrument or get better have joined the adult

beginner band. It’s made for people to start from scratch. It’s a process of learning to play the instrument as well as learning to read music as you go along.” Come along and watch talented locals from the Camden Haven Concert band in action at the ‘Classical Extravaganza’ concert on Sunday August 13 from 2pm at Laurieton School of Arts and again on Sunday August 20 from 2pm at Kendall Community Hall. Adult tickets are $10 and children’s tickets 12 years and under are $5. Tickets are available at the door and afternoon tea is included. The group of local car enthusiasts presented their ninth consecutive donation - $6280 - to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute at Port Macquarie during a a recent special ‘thank you morning tea’ hosted by staff. The group’s latest donation drives their fundraising tally over the past nine years to a remarkable $54,000, with every cent going to support local cancer patients through the purchase of specialised medical equipment. The man whose familiar 1952 blue Vauxhall ute accompanies the raffle ticket sales, Ron ‘Rocket’ Turnbull, said he was delighted at the level of public support for the fundraiser. “Every May/June people put their hands in their pockets to support our raffle, which combined with donations at our Swap Meet at Port Macquarie Racecourse every June, means we can help support local cancer patients,” Mr Turnbull said. “Every cent raised helps patients

who need support… people who are from throughout the Hastings Valley. “We had a great Swap Meet this year, and we thank the SES volunteers who again helped our visitors with parking and then donated their takings on the day to our fundraiser.” Mr Turnbull, a prostate cancer survivor, also thanked IGA Wauchope, Settlement City, Blue Illusion fashion house, Cancer Services staff at the hospital, Port Macquarie Racecourse and Bunnings for their support of the raffle and swap meet. MNCCI Nursing Unit Manager Jenny Baroutis said the generosity of people like Mr Turnbull, who with his wife donates $175 worth of groceries for the raffle each year and then spends hundreds of hours selling tickets, was greatly appreciated. “We are able to provide support through equipment and hardship assistance because of generous people like Rocket and generous community organisations, such as the Hastings Auto Restorers Society,” Ms Baroutis said.

Council programs prove popular at NSW Awards

By CRAIG SWIFT-McNAIR General Manager - Port Macquarie-Hastings Council

LOCAL Government Awards: In some exciting news, Council has been recognised for outstanding achievements at the Local Government NSW Awards held last week. Council were Highly Commended in the NSW Disability Inclusion Award for our ‘Access Friendly Businesses Program’ and we were named the Winner of the ‘Best Local Youth Week Program’ for 2017. The Access Friendly Businesses Program is where a project team from our Access Committee effectively ‘road test’ local businesses and tourism destinations and list those which are disability friendly. So far 27 businesses have been reviewed as access friendly, and now proudly display a sticker at their shop entrance to recognise this. Our 2017 Youth Week program was packed full of events such as the Regional Youth Music Conference; the Waves & Melodies Music Festival; a skateboard competition; the Opportunities Festival;

an Instagram Photo Competition; a Scavenger Hunt and the Homelessness Matters Day. In total, more than 3100 people attended our 2017 youth week program, which is a 300 per cent increase on attendees at the 2016 event. A big thanks and congratulations to everyone involved and for your ongoing commitment to creating a vibrant future for our community. New Community Halls Interactive Map Launches: Port Macquarie-Hastings Council owns and maintains around 18 community halls throughout the region, and you may not know that these halls can be hired by the community, for events and gatherings. To help find a community hall to suit your needs we’ve just released a new interactive map on our website that lists all of the halls. This adds to the interactive maps for parks, reserves and playgrounds that are proving extremely popular, and provides the locations and facilities to help you find the perfect place to hold your next social event, wedding or yoga class! To check out the community halls visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au/community-halls

Jets here for trial match By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

THE Newcastle United Jets are coming to Port Macquarie. The Hyundai A-League club will play a trial match against the best players from the Football Mid North Coast Premier League competition at Regional Stadium in Port Macquarie on August 15. “The match brings the football community together and it increases the opportunities and the promotion of our games,” said Justin McIntyre, Clubs and Referee Development Officer, Football Mid North Coast. “It’s not something they normally get to have here, an A-League club in our own backyard.” Port Macquarie has had its share of talented players such as Angus Thurgate who has gone on to make the Jets youth squad. “It’s also a good opportunity for the best of our Premier League to showcase their talents up against an A-League side and see how they measure up,” McIntyre said. “Angus Thurgate is a local boy who’s gone through our system and has gone on to make the Jets youth squad.” Two representative sides will take to the field for a half each against the Jets. Waters was one under par overnight. He got to four under par with five holes to go but then bogeyed the 14th, double bogeyed the15th and then bogeyed the 17th to be back to even par. However most of the leaders had problems over the closing holes. Jubelin had a short putt at the last hole for outright second but the youngster missed it and then missed the return putt. Jubelin will be going to the US in two weeks to take up a golfing scholarship. Mullens was also\ the runner-up last year. Wauchope’s Jane Horne won her fourth Morgans’ Ladies’ Seaside Classic by seven shots from four other players. Horne had previously won in 1994, 1999 and 2015. After the first round Horne trailed Port Macquarie’s Geri Lavender by three shots but her second round of 83 was the best round of the day. She had 168 for the 36 holes. The Jets will also be keeping busy in their two-day stay by holding a coaching clinic for kids in Taree on Monday August 15. “The kids coaching clinic sold out in just over 24 hours,” said McIntyre. “They had a maximum of 200 U6-U12 players and they have 245 going. “The Jets will also be going to four or five local schools on the Tuesday between 1.30pm and 3pm. I’m trying to cover Kempsey, Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Lake Cathie, and Laurieton. “And hopefully after the match on Tuesday our players will get to have a meal and a cold beer with some A-League players.” The August 15 match at Regional Stadium will start at 7pm. footytips

Frustrations of footy tragic JUST four rounds to go. And, now, with each week more fans’ teams fall by the wayside and many start barracking for their ‘second choice’. What frustrates many of these fans is the seemingly inexplicable drop in form by some teams. The ‘hard cost’ – injuries to key players – can be an explanation. However if we look at the current comp many fans are just left shaking their heads. The Dragons – here was an opportunity to make a finals run and finish deep in the eight. But their woeful recent form now has them a game outside the eight. The Titans – played with grit all season. They amazed pundits with their ability to stay in games despite having more than half their roster in the casualty ward. They play themselves into finals contention, get most of their players back then put in the worst three performances of the year to become also-rans.

Then of course you have the opposites, teams such as the Eels, who were ‘OK’ for the majority of the year, then suddenly hit the ‘go’ button when it matters. The frustrations of the footy tragic! Let’s try to tip some winners: Rabbitohs v Bulldogs (Thursday, August 10, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The Dogs just want this season to finish. Their proud fans will be filthy at their recent performances. They have a pretty soft run home, but no wins guaranteed. The Rabbits will be buoyed by their Houdini act against the Dragons. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Eels v Knights (Friday, August 11, 6pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Eels were chasing a top eight spot, but after six straight wins now have a top four slot in their sights. The only danger here will be complacency. The Knights have shown in recent weeks that if you snooze you will lose against them.

• Your Local Independent tips: Eels Broncos v Sharks (Friday, August 11, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): The Sharks, coming off a loss, have three tough games ahead of them. While the Broncos form against the Titans may be deceptive (the Titans were terrible). However you can’t beat wining form. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Dragons v Titans (Saturday, August 12, 3pm, UOW Jubilee Stadium, Sydney): The battle of the ‘Drunken Sailors’. These two should be playing for nothing because that’s what they have given fans in recent weeks. Pride must kick in this weekend. If that is the case then the Dragons, at home, have the edge. But who knows what this game will turn up. • Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Storm v Roosters (Saturday, August 12, 5.30pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): Roosters will be very keen to hit back after their fade-

out against the Sea Eagles last weekend. Storm just keep rolling. As we say each week, it is understandable if the Storm have an off-week. Better now than late in September. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Panthers v Cowboys (Saturday, August 12, 7.30pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): Should be a close one. The Panthers are starting to show the potential many expected 20 rounds ago. But they are still far from convincing. The Cowboys were tough for the first 40 last weekend against the Storm before a huge injury toll sunk in. With some of those players back, hopefully, the Cowboys will be able to play out the full 80 this weekend. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Warriors v Raiders (Sunday, August 13, 2pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): Warriors have recorded five losses on the trot and that won’t change this weekend. The inconsistent Raiders still have a slight final 8 sniff, but must win all games coming home. This weekend’s assignment will be far from their toughest (Rd 26 v Melbourne will be!). But nothing is certain with 10th – 13th August 2017 Raiders this season. Thursday 10th August, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs vs Bulldogs Friday 11th August, 6pm, ANZ Stadium Raiders Eels vs Knights Tigers v Sea Eagles (Sunday, Friday 11th August, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium August 13, 4pm, Leichhardt Oval, Broncos vs Sharks Sydney): Manly showed last weekend Saturday 12th August, 3pm, UOW Jubilee Oval Dragons vs Titans that they are still a dark horse for this Saturday 12th August, 5.30pm, AAMI Park finals series. To confirm that there must Storm vs Roosters be no doubts and a comprehensive win Saturday 12th August, 7.30pm, Pepper Stadium over the 15th-placed Tigers. Leichhardt Panthers vs Cowboys Sunday 13th August, 2pm, Mt Smart Stadium is a tough away venue for any team, but Warriors vs Raiders Manly should canter home.
