MOTHER’S Day on Sunday is a celebration of all mums and a chance to reflect on the vital roles they have played in our lives. For Kempsey Mayor Liz Campbell, Mother’s Day isn’t about gift giving at all. It is all about the cherished memories she has of her own mum who had a tremendous influence on her life. “I really miss my mum, and that’s part of what Mother’s Day is when you’re a daughter or a son and you’ve lost your mum,” said Liz. “She had a big influence on my life and once you no longer have your mother in your life it is very different, but we had so many good times. “That’s why for me it’s not really about the gift giving; it’s about remembering all the good times. • Continued Page 5

Lecture to mark Billie’s fine work in the Macleay By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
The Macleay Living Sustainably group - Genna Furber, Poppy Jones, Megan Whatmough, Nona Harvey, Bede Hogan, Alison Lee and Cherry Muddle - joined together to help raise awareness about living sustainably and climate change
Mums join Adani fight By SUE PATERICK
A GROUP of young mums and a few friends have decided to band together to share ways of sustainable living, with the aim of combating climate change and protecting the environment for future generations. Calling themselves Macleay Living Sustainably (MLS), the group’s first big event will be hosting two 30-minute documentaries about the proposed Adani coal mine in Queensland and the impacts it will have on the Great Barrier Reef and the environment. If built, the mine will be one of the biggest in the world. Founding member of MLS, Genna Furber, said they first got together because they realised that as a society we were not grasping the enormity of climate change on the environment now and into the future. “We thought we would have more impact as a proactive group,” Genna explained. “At first we didn’t know what we wanted to do, we just thought we would get together to make change that would help our planet.” The group started small, beginning with how to recycle plastic bags, learning which superannuation companies didn’t support fossil fuels, and holding a clothes swap. “We then wanted to do a larger project and decided to raise awareness about Adani’s mine,
which will have devastating impacts on ground water, the Barrier Reef and our climate,” Genna said. The #StopAdani documentaries will screen at the Oddfellows Hall at 22 Kemp Street in West Kempsey on Friday, May 18 from 6pm. One of the documentaries, A Mighty Force, captures the power and passion of people taking extraordinary action to stop the proposed coal mine. It depicts a young Aboriginal woman standing up for country in Central Queensland; a Melbourne Rabbi putting pressure on his MP; Sydney volunteers calling voters during an election; a Queensland farmer leading a massive creative protest; and tens of thousands of people mobilising for a day of action right across Australia. The other film, Guarding the Galilee, was the #StopAdani campaign’s first documentary. It screened over 400 times to around 10,000 people across Australia, bringing communities together to build a movement that now has well over 100 active groups across the country. The combined membership of these groups and the organisations of the Stop Adani Alliance (SAA) exceeds two million Australians. There will be two speakers in the between the films, Cherry Muddle and a member of the Greens Jeremy Buckingham. Cherry is a MLS member and spent about

five years in the Whitsunday Islands helping to save the Great Barrier Reef from many impacts, including Adani’s mine. By showing these films MLS hopes to engage the community so it will become more proactive in stopping the Adani coal mine from going ahead. According to the Stop Adani Alliance, the movement in 2017 pushed Australian and Chinese banks to say no to funding the mine, pressured the Queensland government to veto the $1 billion loan, and saw engineering firm Downer break $2 billion in ties with Adani. The Alliance says that so far in 2018, rail operator Aurizon have withdrawn their application for taxpayer funds to build Adani’s railway. “Yet, with Adani having sunk billions into their Queensland mine, and ongoing political support for the project, they aren’t just going to walk away,” SAA added. “The fight to stop Adani is not over but as Juru Traditional elder, Carol Prior, says in the film, ‘Adani are dealing with a mighty force and the more it grows, the harder we’ll be to beat.’” Entry to see the #StopAdani documentaries is $3 and it is a BYO event, alcohol is allowed. THE Macleay Valley lost a great friend in January of 2016 with the passing of Billie Crawford. And she will now be properly honoured through the introduction of the Billie Crawford Inaugural Lecture on May 24. “It’s been a couple of years now since we lost Billie and we wanted to have an ongoing annual lecture as a permanent memorial to her name and the work she did,” said Dr Noeline J Kyle, Honorary Professor, University of Sydney, and organiser of the Lecture. “Billie did so much for the community and she helped so many people. She had a special interest in women, particularly Aboriginal women. She was also very interested in the migrants, and was particularly involved in many of the community organisations.” Billie spent her years in the Macleay Valley walking the roads, hills, and valleys, seeking out heritage sites that had been forgotten. “Her great love, of course, was the history and heritage of the Macleay Valley,” said Dr Kyle. “She would save heritage sites that had been forgotten.” Billie moved to the Macleay in 1968 and after her retirement from the ABC in 1983 she worked in the community at the Historical Society. She made a huge contribution to the Historical Society as President, focusing her time on writing and researching the Heritage Report for the Kempsey Council. Billie also supported Reconciliation for Aboriginal women, was involved in producing talking books for the blind, and worked in the community tirelessly until her death. “One of the reasons why we wanted to have something like a lecture was to acknowledge how wide her reach was and her many friends,” said Dr Kyle. “I grew up in the Macleay and I met Billie. She was a wonderful person.” Billie’s tracks are still plotted everywhere around the community. “I’m a volunteer at the Kempsey Museum and every file has got Billie’s marks on it,” said Dr Kyle. “You can see her in our records everywhere.” Award-winning historian Dr Julie McIntyre will present the lecture in the Mates room at the Slim Dusty Centre on Thursday, May 24 from 12.30pm to 2pm. Dr McIntyre will be discussing the topic ‘Remaking the Macleay: A migration history’. The lecture will be accompanied by an Exhibition of Migrant Heritage on the Macleay, another one of Billie’s passions. To RSVP phone 02 65627572 or 0403 868 051. Impacts of flight increases
I WRITE on behalf of the Save Kempsey Airport Action Group Inc. regarding the impact on your lives from the planned increase in pilot training at Kempsey Airport. We support Council’s vision to make Kempsey Airport a more commercially viable facility for commercial aviation. However, pilot training on an industrial scale is incompatible with residential, agricultural and tourism areas. Under the current DA approved by Council in 2015, less than 50 students at a time undergo training using a fleet of two to three aircraft. Flying is allowed from 7am to 7pm Monday to Fridays (5pm Saturdays & Sundays), with night flying permitted 12 days per year up until 10pm. No flying on public holidays. The Australian International Aviation College has asked Council for approval to increase these hours. Weekdays would extend to 9pm and to 10pm during daylight saving. Weekends would increase to 8pm all year and flying would be allowed on all public holidays. Ultimately, AIAC wish to train up to 250 pilots at a time using a fleet of 25 to 30 aircraft. You may not think this will affect you, but it will. It will affect the tourism industry, the Macleay Valley Food Bowl, the organic farming industry, and the lives of people in the villages
and rural areas of the lower MacLeay and the holiday coastal strip from South West Rocks to Crescent Head. Pilot training involves three phases: 1. Circuit Training: Repetitive, noisy, circuits within 5.6km of the airport. This footprint covers West Kempsey, touches South Kempsey, Burnt Bridge and Pipers Creek. It also covers the residential areas of Aldavilla, Sherwood, Yarravel and Euroka. 2. Intermediate Training: Conducted at higher altitudes in the area stretching from South West Rocks to Crescent Head and inland to Frederickton and Kempsey. 3. Navigation Training: Longer distance flights, including night flights. The claimed economic benefits of the pilot training are a furphy, being based on expenditure analysis of international tertiary students studying three to six-year degree courses at major universities. These dubious benefits are far outweighed by the adverse impacts on people’s lives and livelihoods. A decision to apporve or reject the increases will be made at the Council meeting on May 15. Adam Ulrick, President Save Kempsey Airport Action Group Inc.

WOW! Another big week here in newspaper land! It’s been crazy busy, being so short staffed, but a lot of good has come out of the situation. Thanks to everyone who reads From the Heart, and those that take note – we have had a positive response to my housekeeping vent. Thank you all, you have no idea how much time it saves when you leave clear precise messages – it takes 90 per cent of the guess work out for starters. Massive thanks also to Rosalie who came forward and has volunteered some time to help in the office until I can organise replacement staff. Rosalie, you are a gem! Just amazing. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Mother’s Day came early for some of the YLI team… My eldest daughter Nadine arrived on Saturday for a weeklong stay and a bit of family time – a rare occurrence in our family due to distance and work/study commitments – and it’s been great! The only negative? We couldn’t co-ordinate my second daughter Shannon from Tasmania to be here at the same time and complete the family. Unfortunately, with a limited timeframe, the price and logistical nightmare of coordinating flights/trains etc, she would be lucky to have enough time to have dinner with us before she had to start making the return trip. Maybe next year. The mind-blowing thing I discovered? It’s often easier, cheaper and in lots of cases quicker, to get flights to NZ, Singapore or Bali for a weekend, in some cases with accommodation/meals included. Is it me, or is there something completely wrong with this picture? Surely as regional centres we should be eligible for some of the cheap domestic deals on offer between major centres? How can one

TO Busways Port Macquarie. After a tiring trip home on the train from Sydney recently, what a pleasure is was to be met at Wauchope by their lovely bus to Port. Their driver was courteous and helpful and also funny, so I think all the passengers enjoyed the trip as much as I did.

airline justify charging more than $750 for a return trip between Hobart and Port Macquarie – especially when most of the trip is spent waiting in Melbourne and Sydney terminals for the best part of a day – when another airline is charging $150 return from Brisbane to Darwin? It’s previously been touted that we don’t attract enough passengers to get the better pricing – if that’s the case, the increased numbers in tourism to the region must obviously all be drivers? Or something doesn’t stack up…can someone enlighten me? Our biggest Mothers’ Day congratulations goes to our amazing freelance journalist, Lizzie Stipcevic and her husband Matt, on the early arrival of their first born, Ivy Grace! Lizzie was interviewing and writing the front-page story for YLI on Friday (with threeish weeks to go) and Sunday evening we hear she’s delivered a beautiful, healthy baby girl. Well done Lizzie and welcome to Ivy Grace! What a fabulous Mother’s Day present for the new grandmothers. Congratulations! I know I’ll be making the most of Mother’s Day, (I’m making a weekend of it!) and I hope all the mum’s out there; young and old, do the same. Put your feet up and relax and let the family pamper you…you deserve it! On that note, I’d like to wish all the mums out there a very Happy Mother’s Day. I hope your day is filled with love and blessings, spent with the ones you love, doing what you love to do...

A BIG thanks to the young couple who stopped at the roadside late last Wednesday night to see if I needed any assistance. I most definitely did and the young man kindly changed my tyre for me. Nice to know there are people in our community who are concerned about others and are prepared to help out a stranger. Thanks again.
Thumbs Up TO the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for getting interested in the Port Macquarie Koala. However, my fears are that it’s all too late. When we moved to Port Macquarie five years ago they were a common sight. Not today, I haven’t seen one for six months. Except for a few signs painted on the road, our Council seems to have done nothing. I guess it’s goodbye Koalas.

Liz’s mum a fine role model “ You really need
the support of the people around you as a mum and a working mum
“
• From Page 1 “Growing up Mother’s Day was something we made special for Mum. We would make sure she didn’t have to get anyone else breakfast and we would make her handmade gifts. “We would always eat lunch and dinner together and go to church. It was more about the feeling for us, not so much about the gifts.” Liz will be spending Mother’s Day at a conference in Adelaide, but she says that every day feels special with her family. “I have a really close connection with my children so we see each other quite a lot,” Liz explains. “My husband Ray and I have three children between us - my daughter, who is in her 40’s, my stepdaughter, who is nine years younger, and my son, who is 34. I also have six grandchildren and I’m really fortunate because two of my children live in Kempsey, so I get to see a lot of them.” Liz was elected as a councillor in 2008 and then went on to become deputy mayor. In 2011, Liz was elected mayor by the council and went into the election in 2012 when she was elected to a four-year term. She was re-elected in 2016 and is coming up to her seventh year as mayor of Kempsey. “I’ve always worked while my children were growing up,” said Liz. “It is difficult, and as you grow older and your children become independent and have their own children, you see them going through the same thing. “It’s a two-income family model that we have now, and as a mother that starts the feeling of guilt, having to divide your time between your priorities. “You really need the support of the people around you as a mum and a working mum. We also need workplaces that are happy to have mothers that work. We are trying even harder now at council to make sure that it is a place that values the fact that people do have families.” Many mothers have felt the guilt of leaving
Kempsey Mayor Liz Campbell the home to return to work, making balancing children and work difficult. “I think when mothers have younger children they are pressured to stay home, although I’ve never been influenced from what others think or say about going to work or not,” Liz said. “When I grew up my mother worked and she was one of the few women in those days that did. She ran a travel agency in Kempsey with my father and then they built the first aged care nursing facility in town. I grew up in a home with
a mum who was also very involved in community work, and that was just the way it was. “I became a mother when I was very young and I didn’t have any other option than to go to work, but I know other people who stayed at home with their children. I don’t know many people these days who have only stayed home and looked after children, but that in itself is a major role that women play if that’s how they choose to live their life or if they are financially able to do that, that’s a fantastic thing.
“I think now we’ve made it so it’s very difficult for women to have that choice, so that choice has really been taken away for a lot of people. So then we need to think about who takes care of the children, the home, and what becomes of the home.” There is definitely a strong female presence on the Mid North Coast with women like Liz as mayor of Kempsey, Peta Pinson the mayor of Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams and Melinda Pavey as state Members of Parliament, and Kerry Grace, the CEO of the Regional Development Authority, to name a few. “Being on the Mid North Coast, we do have a high representation of women in the workforce,” said Liz. “It’s important that women have the support of people around them. It’s very difficult indeed to be a mum and a working mum. I know that I have fantastic support from my husband. I also know that I have in my family a single mum with two children and it’s hard, so everybody’s situation is different. “It’s also different for fathers these days because they need to, are, and want to be more involved with their children and the home, and to make that successful. It’s hard, it’s what life is, and that’s a good thing.”

Musicians Charlie (Paul) Underwood, Greg Viney and Garry Grey from new band Lick The Spoon will make their Macleay Valley debut at the Gladstone Quality Markets on May 20
Talented trio tunes up for Macleay debut By SUE PATERICK GET down and boogie to new band Lick The Spoon at their first Macleay Valley gig at the picturesque Gladstone Markets on Sunday, May 20. Between them the band members have 128 years of experience as musicians. Garry Grey plays double bass and cajon, Charlie (Paul) Underwood plays percussion, washboard and Middle Eastern drums, and Greg Viney strums a five-string banjo, mandolin, bouzouki, fiddle and tenor guitar, The band describes its music as a fusion of Bluegrass, with Irish and Middle Eastern influences. “We all share a common love of acoustic music, storytelling, humour and fun,” Greg said, “We also share a love of nature and its bush lifestyle, and play original music based on Australian stories and our experiences of living in the hinterlands of the Mid North Coast.” Greg also thinks the Macleay Valley is blessed to have so many great musicians living in the area and many fine travelling musos who
choose to perform there. Greg has lived in the MacLeay Valley since 1981 and thinks it is a great place to bring up children. “The air is clean, you can still drink the rain water and we have the finest beaches in the country,” he said. “We also have beautiful mountains just to the west so why would you live anywhere else.” Greg loves being a musician because music has been important to humans since the beginning of time. “Music has a way of bringing people together and it’s an integral part of my daily life,” he continued. “I play every day and take great delight in learning new tunes.” Greg also reckons playing music keeps him feeling young and keeps his brain active. For friend and bandmate Garry Grey, music is an artistic expression that just comes naturally. He also thinks playing music is a neverending path because there is always something to learn. Being a team player, Garry enjoys the concept
of making music with similar minds who share a common goal. He has lived in the Macleay Valley for 37 years and enjoys its pure nature and its clean air. “Plus it’s a pleasure to be far away from the maddening crowds of a city,” Garry added. “Our quiet and empty beaches are pure bliss and a pleasure to behold too!” Charlie Underwood likes being in a band because he also enjoys being part of a group of like-minded souls. “I enjoy creating stories and music and having fun,” he said. “I also like sharing the laughter and joy with other people.” Charlie lived in the Macleay Valley for 13 years and during that time he met and played music with some talented people. He then moved to the Hastings Valley and has lived there for the last 15 years. “I’ve found the Mid North Coast to be an excellent place to live and play music,” he said. Lick The Spoon also pays at parties, concerts, festivals, shows, bush dances and any gathering that wants something different. To find out more or to book the band email
ratchett1@tsn.cc or phone 6587 5172 and 0401 663542. The Gladstone Quality Markets are held on the third Sunday of every month from 9am to 2pm and are one of Macleay’s most popular markets. Held in the historic village of Gladstone on the banks of the dark green Macleay River opposite the Heritage Hotel, the market hosts quality, local, hand-picked stallholders that sell art, ceramics, handmade soaps and organic beauty products. Gourmet foods such as jams, preserves, farm fresh produce, sourdough bread and locallymade muesli are also for sale, as is barista coffee, buffalo gelato and cheeses, locally-smoked fish products and gourmet pies. There is also a selection of native plants for gardeners, plus live entertainment by local musicians and performers, as well as regular face-painting and a jumping castle for the kids. Wandering the markets is a great way to catch up with friends and family, and Gladstone’s interesting shops and its art gallery offer hours of browsing once the market is over.
FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson I’m really looking forward to visiting Mrs York’s Garden in Port Macquarie this Saturday, as our community comes together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the naming of this beautiful community space. It was a Tuesday afternoon in May 1968, when Mayor, Alderman CC Adams unveiled a name plate officially naming the garden that sweeps around the headland, ‘Mrs York’s Garden’. Five years before the official naming the headland was described as ‘a piece of no man’s land’, and the area was abounding in long grasses, noxious weeds and was generally unkempt. Following Mrs York’s request, the area was gazetted as a Floral Reserve, and that’s when Mrs York set to work, contributing almost all of the
money herself to beautify the reserve. Mrs York said that she had much pleasure in establishing the area as a garden as townspeople and visitors had in enjoying its beauty. She said it made her very happy when sick or troubled people gained solice in the garden, or when garden lovers came to see what can grow on the foreshore. What an inspiration Mrs York was, and it was so sad that we saw the garden decline after she passed away in 1971, aged 77. In May 2015, an enthusiastic team of volunteers called the Friends of Mrs York’s Garden were joined by Council, Landcare and members of the public to launch a community based project to restore the area of headland, and bring back the beauty of Mrs York’s Garden. It was a very special occasion, with four of Mrs York’s
pmhc.nsw.gov.au granddaughters … Glenys Pearson, Megan Carter, Julie Midson-York and Melissa Darnley attending on the day. What they have been able to achieve in just three years to re-establish the garden after so many years of neglect is quite extraordinary, and you will often see the Friends of Mrs York’s Garden hard at work, restoring the areas beauty. 1968 was our sesquicentenary year, and now in our bicentenary year it will bring so much pleasure to so many to celebrate 50 years, and re-dedicate the garden. So why not join me from 9.30am on Saturday morning, marvel at the wonderful job the Friends of Mrs York’s Garden do, relax and enjoy this wonderful community space. Thank you Mrs Amy Bertha York. Until next week, Peta.

It’s party time as Cancerians close in on magic $1m By SUE PATERICK THE MACLEAY Valley may have a small country atmosphere but its inhabitants sure have a big heart, especially when it comes to raising funds for cancer research. According to Kempsey Cancerians’ committee member, Vivian Kyle, the Macleay Valley has helped this volunteer organisation raise almost $1 million over the past 30 years. During this time the Kempsey Cancerians have held various fundraisers with all the money going to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF). “It’s just incredible but typical of what this shire gives,” said Vivian. “The community gives you something and then asks what else it can give.” This is the Kempsey Cancerians’ 31st year, and its members hope to exceed the million dollar mark. They will hold a Mad Hatters Cocktail Party at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club in York Lane on Saturday, May 19 from 6pm. According to Vivian, this fun event is not a formal sit-down affair. Over 35 sponsors have donated goods for this great night so there will be a live auction and major raffles offering items such as a surfboard
Kempsey Cancerians Helen Packwood, Samantha Dyet, Vicki Reardon, Ali Mavin, Maree Hayes and Alice the Labrador are busy raising funds for cancer research and are looking forward to the Mad Hatters Cocktail Party this month signed by Mick Fanning, a Rex Newell painting, Bemurrah Homestead stay, a beer fridge, ladies pamper pack and much more. The main balloon raffle prize is a beautiful nine-carrot natural emerald ring donated by Irvine’s Jewellers, plus there are many more great prizes. Organisers predict a fun night with Ritchie Gudgeon’s music keeping the guests dancing the night away, plus there will be many seating options available.
Dress is cocktail wear and given the theme of the night is Mad Hatters, guests (both male and female) are asked to don a hat or a fascinator. The blokes have been given special permission to keep their hats on inside the RSL Club during the event. Tickets cost $85 and are available at Just Lingerie at Shop 3 in the Pead’s Arcade 34 Smith Street in Kempsey, but be warned they are selling fast. This year the Cancerians have also been
selling $2 raffle tickets around Kempsey and South West Rocks. First prize is a $1000 Gift Card, second is a Jumbuck six-burner hooded BBQ - including half a lamb, $100 meat voucher and a hamper - and third prize is a $250 Mavin Petroleum Voucher. “Everyone is just so happy to give and if they can’t make it on the night they are buying raffle tickets,” Vivian said. “For a place as small as the Macleay Valley, it’s amazing just how big the locals are at giving.”
DON’T SPREAD FLU GET A FLU SHOT NOW An annual flu shot is your best protection against influenza Influenza is more serious than the common cold. Last year, more than 650 people died in NSW from flu related complications. By getting a flu shot you’re protecting yourself and the community from serious illness this winter. This year’s influenza vaccines have been updated to provide the best possible protection. Speak to your GP or pharmacist and get a flu shot now. FLU FACT: You can’t catch influenza from the flu shot.

Program suits those studying from home MANY people find learning at home a more comfortable option than attending face-toface classes. We cater for such folks with our Blended Learning program, which offers a mix of classroom and on-line sessions, plus selfpaced workbook-based learning programs. We also offer workshop-style sessions, where students can join a Community of Practice, which meets monthly to share experiences, swap ideas for assessment tasks, and provides access to peer support. Sometimes learning at home can become daunting when the topic is complex, so these workshops break down such fears through shared exploration of topics. We are also exploring the virtual learning world, using systems like Google Classroom, Moodle and other types of e-learning services. Plus many students have to complete online modules as a requirement of completing their qualification, such as the Working With Children compulsory on-line certificate program. But our main aim is to ensure everyone gets work placements and work experience that gives them real face-to-face exposure to the industry in which they want to end up working. So while some students may choose online as their preferred study option, we will ensure that is coupled with real hands-on engagement with workplaces. Come in and see what your next study journey might look like. Please call in at 77 Hastings River Drive, or give us a call on 6583 7288. And you can check out the website at www.portace.com.au.

$30m in grants for NSW groups THE 2018 Community Building Partnership Grants Now Open: Applications are now open for the 2018 Community Building Partnership Program (CBP), unlocking $30 million for community infrastructure projects across NSW. A total of $330,000 is available for projects in each NSW electorate, including the Port Macquarie electorate, and I urge not-for-profit groups to apply for the funds they need to deliver projects with social, environmental and recreational outcomes. Local sports clubs, charities, men’s sheds and Scouts or Girl Guides are just some of the groups that benefit from this program. This grants program makes a real difference to our local communities. Since 2011, we have invested $2.2m in CBP projects across the Port Macquarie electorate. The NSW Government has made improving local infrastructure a key priority. If your organisation or club needs extra funding for the building, refurbishment or enhancement of facilities, then I’d strongly encourage you to apply. This is a great opportunity to get the support our community group needs to make real improvements in the places we meet, train or recreate. Take the time to prepare and submit your application so you don’t miss out.
STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
Applications close at 5pm on Friday, June 15. Applicants must read the program guidelines to ensure their club or organisation and proposed project are eligible. For more information, visit: the www.nsw.gov.au/cbp or call my office on 65840977. Funding for Two Local Preschools: Two preschool services in Port Macquarie will each receive $7000 to help increase the number of Aboriginal and disadvantaged children participating in quality early childhood education in the year before school. The funding is part of the NSW Government’s Community Grants program. The successful preschools were Port Macquarie Community Preschool and Port Macquarie Community Preschool - (Annex). Grants like these go a long way in communities across Port Macquarie and I am proud the Liberals and Nationals are investing in these initiatives.
Noms open for tourism awards NOMINATIONS are now open for this year’s North Coast Regional Tourism Awards. The awards, which started in 2004, are held annually to acknowledge excellence in tourism across NSW and are now a major industry event for regional NSW. As part of Kempsey Shire Council’s economic development program and as owner of the five Macleay Valley Holiday Parks, Council is encouraging local operators to enter the awards. “The awards provide an opportunity for those working in tourism to gain an insight into their industry, achieve recognition for their success and promote tourism within their region,” said Council’s Economic Sustainability Officer, Kristy Forche-Baird. “Entrants can be made up of tourism businesses, events, marketing organisations, clubs and individuals.” Winners of the Regional Tourism Awards gain finalist status upon entering the NSW State Tourism Awards, and if successful, go onto the National Tourism Awards. The closing date for submissions is Friday 25 May. The awards will take place on Thursday, July 26 at Opal Cove Resort, Coffs Harbour. To find out more about the awards and to make a submission go to: www. regionaltourismawards.com.au
Ring fingers point to Egyptians THE wedding ring was - long ago - a form of purchase so that the husband could tell all around him that the woman was his. I was talking to a group recently when the subject of weddings came up. I don’t know how the topic came up. But author and etymologist Rudolph Brasch said that in the olden days men would bind the ankles and wrists of the woman who became his property and servant. He said the wedding ring developed from the engagement ring. The choice of hand retained the assumption that the woman was the husband’s slave. The right hand always stood for the power and authority and the left hand expressed submission. There was a lot more, in the words of Rudolph Brasch and others. But other theories were in circulation. For instance, before medical science discovered how the circulatory system functioned, people believed that a vein ran directly from the fourth finger on the left hand to the heart. Once you’re married, tradition dictates that your engagement band be moved back to the third finger on your left hand. When you do so, your wedding ring should remain closest to your heart (where your spouse placed it on
my

your wedding day) and your engagement ring is placed next to the wedding ring. According to a tradition believed to have been derived from the Romans, the wedding ring is worn on the left-hand ring finger because there was thought to be a vein in the finger, referred to as the ‘Vena Amoris’ or the ‘Vein of Love’ said to be directly connected to the heart. Though the exact origin is unknown, historians primarily believe ancient Egypt started the tradition most like our modern wearing of a wedding band. Archeological discoveries, some dating back more than 3000 years ago, led them to this conclusion. Imagery on artifacts, such as papyrus scrolls, reveal an ancient culture that exchanged rings braided from reeds and hemp. Experts learned how this society viewed the circle as a symbol of endless love between a man and woman. Additionally, Egyptians
wore wedding bands on the ring finger of their left hands. They also believed this finger held a special vein directly connected to the heart Ring has a few meanings, but we are concerned with the meaning of circle and the very old word kragu. This was taken over by the old French ranc, from which English gets rank and renc, which, according to John Ayto, may be the source of rink. My Macquarie gives a lot of definitions for ring, but mainly of a circle “as a token of marriage” or “to a group of persons cooperating in illegal purposes”. The illegality was not explained. The Collins says “the parson had two daughters, who did a bit of ringing”. I have no idea what that meant. It goes on to say that if you wear a ring it is an indication that you are married. Webster says something similar. Guinness talks about the ringing of bells, but I couldn’t find anything about weddings., The 1881 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue talks about begging. I think I know what that means. My big dictionary has 10 pages on the word ring, but I don’t have space to tell you about them. lauriebarber.com;bword@midcoast.com.au

Funding increase to help people with disabilities PEOPLE with disability will receive more support in their search for a job through increased Federal funding under the Coalition Government. More support is being provided to new and existing Disability Employment Service (DES) providers from July 1. DES providers in our local area will help connect people with disability to the right job for them, and support local businesses and organisations to find talented candidates. People with disability in our community will now have more choice of provider and more say in the supports they receive. Work provides security and independence. It also expands our social networks, gives us a sense of responsibility and self-worth, and enables us to contribute more fully to society. The Federal Coalition Government is committed to improving employment outcomes for people with disability. The providers servicing our region include: Castle Personnel Services Limited, Community Programs Association, Enterprise & Training Company Limited, Job Futures Ltd, JOBFIND LWB PTY LTD, Joblink Plus Limited, Key Employment Association Limited, Mai-Wel Limited, OCTEC Limited, Ostara Australia Limited, PEOPLEPLUS ENTERPRISES PTY LTD, Rehab Management (Aust) Pty
CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
Ltd, RichmondPRA Limited, Serendipity Pty Ltd, Tursa Employment & Training Limited, VERTO Ltd, Wesley Community Services Limited. More than 13 per cent of people who are of working age have a disability, however only 53 per cent are participating in the workforce, compared to 83 per cent of people without disability. Our Government will invest more than $3 billion in DES over the next four years. To find a DES provider or for more information, visit www.jobaccess.gov.au. Lifeline: The Federal Coalition Government will provide $33.8 million to Lifeline to significantly boost their telephone crisis service and help those with mental health issues. Over one million Australians reach out to Lifeline each year and it receives the largest call volume of any crisis support service.
This funding will mean the charity can answer more calls, helping them answer close to 100 per cent of calls. Funding will also support the coaching and development of crisis supporters, equipping them with more skills to deal with the complex range of issues which can be brought up during a call. We know how important Lifeline’s 24hour service is to the community, and we will continue to support this vital organisation. Sometimes it’s hard to reach out for help but during times of need Australians should know someone will be available to hear their concerns and offer them help. We are forever grateful to the crisis supporters and staff of Lifeline, no doubt they have saved countless lives. The Federal Coalition Government is investing over $4.2 billion dollars into mental health services this year and we have made mental health a national priority. Our government has contributed more than $57 million since 2011-12 to Lifeline’s 13 11 14 telephone service. We have also provided over $213 million (from 2011-12 to 2018-19) for a range of nationally available telephone and web based services, including Kids Helpline Reachout, and On The Line.
Roberts spearheads great result for locals SUPERSTAR Madi Roberts was among the local competitors who took their fair share of honours at last Saturday’s IRONMAN 70.3 Port Macquarie. Roberts, TEAM Port Macquarie Running Festival (All Blokes) and the female team (All Chicks) all won their categories. Fresh from her win at IRONMAN 70.3 Taupo and having also dominated at IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns last year, Roberts was once again on fire, delivering a stunning performance that was inspired by her family and the massive local crowd support. “I have been living and working on the Gold Coast since I finished Uni up there but I am originally from Port Macquarie and I had so much local support,” she said. “It was really good racing here at home. I had people everywhere, all over the course from Port Macquarie Tri Club cheering me and it made the run so enjoyable. I had my mum and dad here, and my sister up from Newcastle and my coach and teammates so it was really good. “My dad Andrew hasn’t seen me race much because I normally travel all over the world with my mum with me so it is great for my dad to see me win here. It is special to race at home.” Roberts puts her winning streak down to working with new coach, Andrew Ivy of Elite Sport Specialist, and she is hoping the winning
form continues throughout 2018. “I have improved so much and I can only thank him for that,” she said. “I think 70.3 is my distance and I am only 23, so I think if I do step up to IRONMAN I would like to wait until I am 28. I’d like to turn pro for 70.3 next year after I see how I go at the Worlds in South Africa in September.”
Local athlete Tony Green got the job of anchoring Team Port Macquarie Running Festival’s assault on IRONMAN 70.3 Port Macquarie and he didn’t let anyone down, storming home to give the local crowd something to cheer for. “I have done triathlon but mainly run marathons and fun runs, but Kevin, who organizes the Port Macquarie Running Festival, sponsored the team and he got us all together,” he said. “I was lucky enough to have young elite triathletes Sam Lewis and Harry Jones as my team members and they gave me a flying start so it was all set up for me to have a good run.” Queenslander Brock Millard took the win in the men’s event with a stunning performance (4:15:09) that was set up by a strong swim and bike combination. Melbourne’s Troy Page took line honours and second place overall, in his first trip to Port Macquarie. “It is my first time in Port and I have loved it,” said Page. “I found it amazing out there.I couldn’t be happier right now. I have done it for my two little boys, aged three and one, who inspire me. “I train with my dad and without his advice I would be lost. “Dad has always been in triathlon and a good age grouper and he has inspired me to get better and better. He gets up at 2.30am with me to train.”
and Coffs Harbour, are down 42 per cent since 2010. Mr Green visited Taree in the ManningHastings region to meet with local hoteliers to discuss a range of issues at the AHA NSW SubBranch meeting. He also visited Sawtell for a meeting with hoteliers from the Mid-North Coast branch. Mr Green praised local hoteliers in both areas for their hard work over many years. “The consistent drop in assault rates on licensed premises is indicative of the work hoteliers in the Manning-Hastings and MidNorth Coast areas are putting in with local
police and their wider communities each and every day,” he said. “The figures speak for themselves – assaults on licensed premises in the Manning-Hastings area are down 53 per cent since 2009, and are down 42 per cent on the Mid-North Coast over a similar period. “These are great results and show what can be done when communities work together to combat the issue of anti-social behaviour.” Mr Green said a range of local and statewide issues were under discussion at this week’s meetings, including digital licences, the container deposit scheme and licensee training.

Dramatic fall in assault rates at licensed venues
ASSAULT rates on licensed premises in the Manning-Hastings area have more than halved over the last decade, AHA NSW Director of Liquor and Policing John Green said during a visit to the region earlier this week. Independent Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) figures reveal assault rates on venues in Manning-Hastings, covering the Taree and Port Macquarie areas, are down a massive 53 per cent since 2009 - the lowest on record. BOCSAR figures also reveal assault rates on licensed premises in the neighbouring MidNorth Coast area, which includes Kempsey

Your Local Independent - The Hastings and The Macleay
footytips
Six okay in tough year OK, six tips correct last weekend if you followed Your Local Independent. That’s not bad considering just how tough it is to pick a winner this season. Last week’s form gave us further insights into a very interesting ladder. The Dragons proved they are the top dogs with a big win over the everdangerous Storm, while the Warriors continue to push the argument that they are the real deal in 2018. There is no denying the evenness of this comp with seven teams on 10 points. Makes it hard to get to the top of that tipping chart, but makes for a very enthralling competition. Let’s tip some winners: Tigers v Cowboys (Thursday, May 10, 7.50pm, Leichhardt Oval, Sydney): Has the wind been knocked out of the Tigers sails? After such a promising start to the season the Wests Tigers now sit in 7th spot on the ladder after being touched up by the Warriors last weekend. And just as they were falling from favour, the Cowboys are clawing back. Some of the early front runners in 2018 had to run out of gas. Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Knights v Panthers (Friday, May 11, 6pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle): Both teams coming off a loss, but the Knights would have more concerns with their 36-18 capitulation to the Rabbitohs. No doubt the new faces at Newcastle are still a work in progress. The Panthers meanwhile came home strong against the rejuvenated Cowboys. This game is at the Knights’ home base, but, just like the bookies, we expect the Panthers to have the edge. Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Bulldogs v Eels (Friday, May 11,
7.55pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Second-last v last on the ladder. Not what we would have expected after nine rounds. However both the Dogs and Eels are coming back strongly and both were just edged out of wins last weekend. Just brief lapses have cost both teams in recent weeks. The Dogs certainly were far from disgraced against the Broncos. Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs Warriors v Roosters (Saturday, May 12, 3pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): Warriors second on the ladder and Roosters sixth, but with a cluster of teams on 10 points. The Warriors’ 26-4 demolition of the Tigers last weekend showed just how potent they are in 2018. Roosters are an interesting proposition. They are ‘there-abouts’ without really hitting the form they are capable of. Their 2220 win over Manly last weekend was a classic example. They won, but we know they can play a lot better. Home ground could be the key. Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Storm v Titans (Saturday, May 12, 5.30pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Part of a double-header at Suncorp, so Melbourne give up their home ground advantage. And this is what makes this one interesting. The Titans should be fodder for the Storm, however the Gold Coast lift whenever they play at the Queensland capital. So, we will go for the Storm, but the $5.10 on offer for the Titans is a very attractive carrot. Your Local Independent tips: Storm Sea Eagles v Broncos (Saturday, May 12, 7.35pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Manly give up a home

game here – just when they really needed it. However there are hints of an upset here as well. The Sea Eagles were far from ordinary in their loss to the Roosters last weekend. Meanwhile, some would consider the Broncos lucky to get over the Dogs. You get the feeling Manly’s off-field issues have been sorted, so let’s go for the upset. Your Local Independent tips: Sea Eagles Rabbitohs v Dragons (Sunday, May 13, 2pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Always plenty of feeling when these two teams get together. The Rabbits are a much more consistent side in 2018. They are keen to take that rating up a cog. However it’s hard to take the ‘premiership favourites’ tag away from St George, especially after the way they eclipsed the Storm last weekend. The only issue for the Dragons is how much they were physically and mentally drained from last week’s encounter. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Raiders v Sharks (Sunday, May 13, 4.10pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Both teams coming off wins last weekend. The Raiders certainly appear to be shedding whatever was ailing them at the start of the season and have climbed to 11th on the ladder (8pts). But as mentioned, there is a real log-jam on 10pts, so a couple of more wins and they could be in the eight. The Sharks struggled past the Eels last weekend and, like the Roosters, just can’t seem to lift out of the lower gears, although injuries have played a role here. Raiders are at home and building.
