‘Gem’ revealed Kempsey’s treasured past now shining
By SUE PATERICK LIKE a seam of precious metal buried deep underground, the beauty of the old Barsby’s building on Smith Street in Kempsey has slowly been revealed during months of renovation. The most glorious and mouth-dropping feature of this grand old lady is the pressed-tin ceiling. It shimmers seductively above two new premises: one large 600-square metre space and one smaller space. The elegant ceiling looks so old it was a surprise to learn from owner, Rob Taylor, that a lot wasn’t original. Rob purchased two thirds of the old Barsby’s building next door to the Friendlies Discount Pharmacy about two years ago. He enjoys restoring old buildings and making them look as beautiful and grand as they once did. Rob knew the tin ceilings were there and had been hidden under decades of modernisation, but they were in such bad condition he was unsure whether to restore them or cover them back up. In the end he thought the tin ceilings were just too good to hide so he found a great local tradie, who managed to make the new look old and the old look new • Continued Page 3

Our orchids are ‘blooming’ first
Barsbys has been part of Kempsey for more than 100 years
Glittering past revealed You almost expect to hear the clip clop of horse’s “ hooves travelling down Smith Street and not cars
“
• From Page 1 “The ceilings do look great,” Rob said. “It was sad they were hidden for so long and worse that they were so full of holes.” Browsing through Un4gettable 4evermore, a classy new face in the Kempsey CBD which has now opened in the smaller of Barsby’s two premises, is like stepping back in time. You almost expect to hear the clip clop of horse’s hooves travelling down Smith Street and not cars. Almost exactly 111 years ago in January 1907 a devastating fire destroyed most of Smith Street’s western side, gutting 15 premises. The fire began in the offices of the Macleay Chronicle at about 3.30am in the morning and the heat was intense. Flames could be seen 32 kilometres away and, several times, buildings on the opposite side of the road caught fire. It seemed nothing would save Kempsey from total destruction, but the locals fought hard to extinguish the blaze and save their town. From those ashes Kempsey rose again with new buildings soon replacing the ones that were lost. A Miss Cochrane - granddaughter of William Smith who was the namesake of Smith Street built the Macleay Buildings, three shops that would one day become a thriving department store, affectionately called Barsby’s. When John Henry Barsby arrived on June 3, 1908, the new-look Smith Street was ripe for
investment and he was just the man to do it. By June 18 he had bought out the Sydney Drapery Company, a small one-room shop opposite the Macleay Building, and opened for business under the name of J. H. Barsby, Kempsey. Three months later he leased one of the shops in the Macleay Buildings and moved across the road. On September 24, 1908, Barsby, Draper, Clothier and Mercer began trading and over time outgrew that one small shop, eventually occupying the whole lower floor. When John Barsby retired in 1918 the business he founded had grown and prospered. Now called J. H. Barsby & Sons, the familybusiness continued to thrive and serve the Kempsey community for decades. On Wednesday October 30, 1980, fire once again played a vital role in the destiny of Barsby’s. At 2am that morning a north-bound semitrailer carrying toxic chemicals rolled onto its side as it exited the traffic bridge. Drums of chemicals erupted in flames that soared high into the night-time sky. It took only seconds for the Barsby’s awning to catch fire. The timely arrival of the fire brigade saved the grand old department store and the rest of Smith Street from burning to the ground a second time. According to a journal on Barsby’s of
Kempsey, written by the Macleay River Historical Society, the heat was so intense it melted aluminium, cracked and exploded windows and scarred and burnt the brick façade. Although experts deemed the chemicals were not harmful to humans, livestock or fish, it took weeks to remove the toxic waste and for life to return to normal. However, the damage to Barsby’s façade was extensive and over half its stock had to be thrown away due to smoke damage. Several other shops in town also faced a huge clean up. A period of reduced trading and profitability saw Barsby’s close its doors in December, 2014, after 106 years of dedicated serve to the Kempsey community. With the inside now looking as spectacular as it once did, Rob hopes to tackle the façade. To restore Barsby’s public face will take time and money, but he is keen to get started. “I’d like to remove the section of aluminium facade and reveal the original Victorian facade if such removal was supported by Kempsey Council, and they gained approval from the Pharmacy for removal of their portion of the façade,” he said. Once again he will use local tradespeople, and is also looking for someone to take on the larger premises of Barsby’s grand old building so it can be great again.
THE Camden Haven Orchid Society will be hosting NSW’s first orchid show for 2018. This weekend the public will get the chance to see some of the most spectacular blooms grown right here on the Mid North Coast. There will be more than 150 exhibits by orchid growers from Camden Haven, Bellingen, Kempsey, Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Taree and Forster areas. Come and see the flowering orchids from vivid yellows to the most delicate pinks, evergreen bromeliads and foliage plants with exotic spikes. Among the exhibits will be phalaenopsis hybrids and stanhopea species orchids, orchids that are grown in hanging baskets lined with paper bark or coconut fibre and flower out of the bottom of the basket. There will be plenty of fun for everyone from potting demonstrations each day at 10.30am by vice president Allan Wallace on Saturday and president Lloyd Edwards on Sunday. Get some great advice on growing conditions for orchids and plants suitable to the region from the society members and if that’s not enough, stop by the society sales table to take home orchids, bromeliads and foliage plants and accessories. See how orchids are judged with the Mid North Coast’s judging panel who have been appointed to judge the show on Sunday from 3pm. The show will kick off on Saturday, January 13, from 10am to 4pm until Sunday January 14 from 9.30am to 3pm at the Laurieton United Services Club. The presentation to prize winners will take place at 3pm on Sunday by a Director of the Laurieton Services Club. Entry is by a donation to Local Bushfire Services. The show marshalls will be Allan Barnes and Richard Murray.

Music causes a sour note IT’S a great pity that Tacking Point Tavern’s recent major renovations apparerntly failed to include significant soundproofing. As a result the vicinity has had loud live music thrust upon it for lengthy periods of time. This has resulted in the peace, tranquillity and privacy of residents being invaded in favour of the Tavern’s ‘entertainment’, whether they like it or not. Anecdotal evidence suggests homes within an approximate two kilometre radius of the tavern are affected – almost anywhere on Emerald Downs and significant parts of Lighthouse Beach and Crestwood. This amounts to several hundred homes and probably thousands of people. Ironically, these same residents are a key part of the tavern’s customer catchment area – talk about biting the hand that feeds you! The quality of the entertainment is not at issue only the volume of it. Everybody has their own taste in music and should be free to enjoy it – however, this right does not come at the violation of the rights of all those who choose not to be in attendance. Nor is it simply a question of the timing of the music – the volume is equally intrusive whether mid-afternoon or later at night. Design methodologies and sound insulation solutions are certainly available to provide musical entertainment for patrons without
impacting the surrounding residential area. If the Tavern was disposing of kitchen-waste carelessly or simply incinerating unwanted packaging and materials, Council’s water and air pollution inspectors would quickly descend on the facility. Similarly, if a private party generated similar noise levels to the tavern’s live music the police would soon be involved and remedial action taken. Can we therefore expect Council or licensing authority action on this grievous noise pollution activity by way of a blanket ban on live music until such time as Tacking Point Tavern is able to demonstrate greatly improved consideration and respect for its neighbours? HELLO 2018!!! Hopefully the majority have made it through the festive season without too many dramas, have spent time with family and loved ones and are looking forward to what the new year has in store. Christmas for our family was as low key as you can get and it was thoroughly enjoyable. It might seem a bit ‘bah humbug’, but we didn’t bother with a tree, gifts (for the most part) cooking a Christmas lunch or dinner. We started the day with breakfast and a fruit platter and just added cold meat and cheeses as the day went on. It was great! One of the quietest Christmases I’ve ever had, yet one of the best. We sat, ate, drank, talked and laughed all day over a 1000-piece puzzle, most importantly, we spent some quality time together. For the first time in I don’t know how many years, I actually stayed up and saw the New Year in. I celebrated with a fantastic bunch of people. Thank you for the invite and the warm welcome! It was an awesome night. I’m taking that as a positive start and I’m looking forward to what unfolds in 2018. My theory is that it can only be upwards from here and I’m sticking to it! I’m feeling quite optimistic about 2018 – I’ll keep you posted. It’s been awesome to have just over two weeks in a row to relax and not have to think about a deadline. Sadly it’s back to reality now and the hamster wheel of newspaper land. With that in mind, I do want to address a bit of housekeeping. The only thing that disappointed me over the Christmas/New Year break was the amount of people that thought it was okay to bombard me with text messages, voice messages and

the like over this time. If it had been messages of Merry Christmas/ Happy New Year all would be forgiven, and I wouldn’t even be having this discussion. Thanks to those that did send me season’s greetings. I was on the only proper break I get every year and my phone did not stop! By Christmas Eve I had made the decision I needed to ignore and delete all messages from numbers I don’t know or I was not going to have a break. I’d end up locked up, one way or another! To be brutally honest – I thought it was beyond rude and it annoyed the absolute crap out of me! Surely, I’m entitled to two weeks of selfindulgence a year? Moving forward - can everyone and especially those who left messages or sent texts regarding a Thumbs Up/Down, classified advert, What’s On, or anything else over the last three weeks, please use the guide at the bottom of this page (P4) and contact us during office hours to speak to the appropriate person. The thing is, there is a procedure in place and we have that procedure for a reason – it’s how we make things happen. So, if you want something in the paper you’re going to need to follow the procedure. It’s a reasonably simple request and oh, please don’t call me for every little thing, especially after hours or when I’m trying to have a holiday! If we can get this right, 2018 promises to be a fantastic year!

Lyn’s hobby gives kids a better future By SUE PATERICK IT was the beautiful pictures on stamps that attracted Kempsey’s Lyn Saul to start collecting them when she was just 10 years old. “I think stamps are just gorgeous because of what’s on them,” she said. “But I have too many to be favourites.” As she says this, Lyn holds up a few stamps depicting Henry Lawson’s poem The Drover’s Wife, some of Herd Island and others with native Australian flora and fauna. When she moved to Kempsey 35 years ago, a neighbour contributed to Lyn’s philatelist hobby when he dropped off three large boxes of stamps. With so many stamps on her hands Lyn rang a girlfriend who also collected them and asked her who she collected for. Since then Lyn has sorted millions of stamps into groups and sent them down to the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC). One of Australia’s oldest charities, the RIDBC provides a wide range of educational programs for children with hearing and/or vision impairment, including children with additional disabilities.
Up until three years ago Lyn used to send down four or five boxes but these days of social media and texting, she is lucky to send down two. “People have stopped writing letters,” she said. “But I still write them.” Once at the RIDBC, the stamps are then sold to the Philatelic Association of NSW. Over the years Lyn has received many thanks. On one card the RIDBC’s Fundraising Executive for Community Partnerships, Nadine Kanaan, thanked Lyn for her many years of dedication. “It is kind-hearted and selfless people like you who make a real difference to the lives of people in need,” Ms Kanaan wrote. ‘I love helping people and doing things, but I’m always happy to get a thank you,” Lyn said. “Just the smiles on people’s faces when you do something nice for them is rewarding.” Anyone who knows Lyn, knows she is always helping people through a range of charities. If you would like to help Lyn help others then drop off some of your old stamps at the West Kempsey Post Office so she can pick them up.

The Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and its picturesque surroundings (inset) represent the last remaining fabric of the pioneering wine industry of the late 19th century
Douglas Vale set for huge Open Day By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard is gearing up for another successful Summer Open Day on January 20. The volunteers at Douglas Vale have really gone all out for this year’s open day, which features informative tours of the homestead, their famous wine tastings, delicious food and relaxing entertainment. “We’ve got so many exciting things on this year,” said Kay Morrison, the vineyard’s Events Coordinator. “There’s a model ship-building exhibition by Ian Goulding titled ‘Wine Merchants and Mariners’ which tells their own unique story of the ships which entered the harbour here in the early days. “We’ve got Wendy, Edna and Kerry from the Port Macquarie Art and Craft Centre who will display their skills of pottery, cards and leatherwork.
“There will be complete entertainment from bush poetry and ukulele to country and western singers and bell ringing. “We’ve also got visiting local authors Sue Baker from North Haven, Michael Davis from Taree, and Desley Pulmear from Wauchope who write fiction for children and adults.” Another exciting local group to look out for at the Open Day is the Hastings Photography Group. “Our members will be showcasing their print photographs for sale at the Open Day as well as speaking with anyone who wants to know more about photography and how to use their camera,” said Harry Bryant from the Hastings Photography Group. “We have 48 members with our youngest member being 11 years old and our oldest being in their 80s, and we are always welcoming new members. “People learn how to use their cameras and all the settings on it and how to make sure they
get a good image, how to treat their photographs, all aspects of photography really. “We also have lots of workshops and a weekly coffee morning so it’s also a very social group. We do regular field trips coinciding with bird season or flower season, whatever is current at the time.” Members meet twice each month at 7pm on the first and third Tuesday of the month at Emerald Down’s Community Centre. Field trips and photo shoots are also held regularly at various locations. The Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard is the only volunteer-run homestead in Australia. “We put on the Open Day to raise money to keep things operating because we don’t receive an income and there’s a lot of expenses in running a homestead and a vineyard like we do, so we rely entirely on our open days and wine sales,” explained Kay Morrison. “The homestead was originally 44 acres and it

The brave people who started the conservation fought for it to stay and now it’s still standing today. “It’s very special because there are a lot of artefacts in the homestead that were donated to Douglas Vale from family members. “It represents the last remaining fabric of the pioneering wine industry of the 1800s.” The Open Day runs from from 9.30am to 2.30pm on January 20 at 235 Oxley Highway, Port Macquarie (between the two schools). Entry is by gold coin donation. Douglas Vale is also open every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 3pm. German zoo seeks koala tips By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
One of the most “popular exhibits
that they have are the koalas...they just don’t have animals like them over there
“
THE Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie is teaching experts around the world how to properly look after our furry friends. Head of Europe’s Koala Breeding Program, Mario Chindemi from the Duisburg Zoo in Germany, recently visited the Koala Hospital to gain information on the care of the iconic Australian marsupial. “Mario recognised that we are very advanced in our care of koalas and he came in for many hours across a few days to learn about what we do here,” said Sue Ashton, media spokesperson for Koala Preservation Society Australia Inc. “They have nine koalas in their zoo in Germany and they breed from them, but they have had trouble with their breeding programs so they’re really interested in how we care for our koalas.” The Duisburg Zoo in Germany has been around for more than 80 years and is one of the largest zoological gardens in that country. It is especially well known for its dolphinarium and, since 1994, for breeding koalas. The zoo controls the koala-breeding program for all the zoos in Europe. The Koala Hospital exchanged ideas on koala preservation with Mario and also taught him a thing or two to take back to Germany. “We showed Mario how we anesthetise our koalas, because when they come in to us we have to anesthetise them to give them a proper examination,” explained Sue. “They didn’t have the right formula for that. They had been given formulas from San Diego Zoo, but it just wasn’t right and they were having trouble with that. “We gave him our manual on how to care for koalas and that covers how to anesthetise them, antibiotics we can give them, and the formulas we give them. He was a bit like a sponge, and he was so happy to get the information.”
Mario Chindemi, from the Duisburg Zoo in Germany, is shown around the Koala Hospital by Jane Duxberry, the President of the Koala Preservation Society Australia, during his recent visit to Port Macquarie Mario’s visit is further acknowledgement week. They are flown in and it’s really expensive of the Koala Hospital’s worldwide reputation but it’s the only way they can feed them. It’s been as a leader in koala research and in the rescue, a challenge for them.” The Duisburg Zoo houses 8000 animals, rehabilitation and release of wild koalas in including many different species and runs a Australia. “Initially the Duisburg Zoo tried growing successful conservation-breeding program for eucalypts but because of the cold climate they Europe, but it’s the koalas that keep the crowds didn’t have any success,” Sue said. “They are coming. “One of the most popular exhibits that they now growing them in glass houses but they can’t harvest enough to feed them, so they actually have are the koalas,” said Sue. “Mario says that import eucalypt leaves from San Diego twice a people just love them, they are such a docile and

Charity angle in stock auction By SUE PATERICK
We decided “to donate a
steer every year because we wanted to help other people so no one had to go through what we did
“
NOT only will buyers come from far and wide to purchase quality cattle at Kempsey Stock and Land’s 29th Annual Steer and Bullock Sale, proceeds from several animals will go towards cancer research. For the past several years Allan and Claire Prior from the Lower Macleay have donated a steer to help fight cancer after losing their beloved son, John, to the dreaded disease. Claire still finds it hard to speak about her son’s death two years ago but hopes their story will encourage others to donate a steer too. “It is the most heart-wrenching thing to lose a child,” Claire said. “So we decided to donate a steer every year because we wanted to help other people so no one had to go through what we did.” At last year’s sale about $5000 was raised with the money going to the Cancer Council and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. This year Doug Thompson from Pee Dee Creek will also be donating a steer. “Cancer touches everyone regardless of age so we’re asking other people to get on board as every cent helps fund cancer research,” Claire added. “I know we’re all struggling on the land to make ends meet, but even if it’s a calf for $200 it all helps to fight this terrible disease. “The suffering they go through just shouldn’t be allowed.” According to Ian McGoldrick from Kempsey Stock and Land, about 1500 to 1800 head are expected to go under the hammer at this year’s sale and these animals have been sourced from the Macleay Valley and Mid North Coast of NSW. “This is an annual event that attracts a lot of buyers from the Northern Tablelands, Hunter

Valley, Northern NSW and Queensland,” Ian said. “The market is very strong at the moment and
we’re expecting a good sale this year.” Ian will be calling the sale on the day, along with Ian Argue (Principal of Kempsey Stock and
Land), Laurie Argue and Ben Tyson. Mavin Hino, Chemvet Australia and DeeAmber Rural Supplies are sponsoring the event and have donated $5000 in cash and prizes for three categories. These categories are the best pen for weaner steers, the best pen for feeder steers and the best pen for bullocks. Prizes include a Bulka Bag of ‘The Basics’ Fertilizer’, which consists of super fine lime, boron, zeolite and trace elements on a poultry manure base in a pelletised form, and a Vetmec anti-parasitic cattle injection. The Annual Steer and Bullock Sale will commence at 9am at the Kempsey Regional Sale Yards on Friday, January 12. For more information contact Kempsey Stock and Land on 6562 6600.

Hastings P&C’s wish is granted A CHRISTMAS wish has come true for the Hastings School P&C. An application from the Hastings School P&C for a Club Grant was recently approved by the Board of Directors at Port City Bowling Club. “The approval will finance the construction materials required to complete the ‘Path To Completion’ project and we couldn’t be any happier with the decision and timing,” said Hastings School P&C member and ‘Path to Completion’ coordinator Adam Rumble. “This path is the final stage of a project undertaken by Hastings School P&C connecting the school’s covered outdoor area to the Braemar Drive gate and also incorporates a Sensory Garden area for the younger students.” The ‘Path to Completion Project’ started when parents had to negotiate a challenging rainforest path to get in and out of the school. Adam and the P&C proposed a new flat and weather-resistant path to guide parents and their children safely to and from school. The P&C also took on the project of a sensory garden, which involves an interactive play area and a space to relax for the students. “The support shown by Port City Bowling Club and the Club Grants program is very much appreciated,” said Adam. “It’s a fantastic initiative that connects communities with their local clubs.” The ‘Path to Completion’ project has already commenced with a small footbridge completed and key local businesses secured for various sponsored aspects of the path’s construction. The P&C still needs volunteers to come along this weekend - January 12, 13, and 14 from 8am until 2pm to help with the path and a general working bee that will also be taking place in
preparation for the school year. Volunteers are requested for all days but especially on the Saturday when a ‘mega working bee’ is to take place spreading mulch, tidying up the rainforest path and undertaking numerous minor maintenance improvements. Volunteers are asked to bring overalls, shovels, wheelbarrows, rakes, personal sun protection and water. “We are still hoping that we get more volunteers for the weekend. The more the merrier,” said Adam. “The main day will be Saturday the 13th which is when most bodies will be needed for the working bee.” The P&C are still welcoming sponsors onto the project and are also appreciative to all the sponsors who have already given so much. The sponsors involved in this project so far are – Port City Bowling Club, Bunnings Port Macquarie, Ground FX, Native Impressions Landscaping who are providing excavators, Greenplace who are providing skilled labour, Remondis Port Macquarie, Woodvale Tree Services, and Crescent Head School who donated plants. For enquiries and further information contact Project Coordinator Adam Rumble on 0448920152 or email pdavman@bigpond.com. PICTURED: Port City Bowling Club director Wayne Evans presents the grant to Hastings School P&C president Amy Vallentine and project coordinator Adam Rumble (rear). Also pictured are Hastings students Jack Rumble, Lucinda Gaudry and Summer Rumble, along with PCBC’s Russell Stockham (CEO), Bronte Dodds and James Kelleher.

New book targets ‘kidults’ THE GOOD THING ABOUT…KOALAS is a ‘kidults book. Entertainment and education for children, information and motivation for adults. Humorous and factual, it was conceived and written by G Henshaw and illustrated by Ben Creighton, both locals in the Port Macquarie /Hastings area. The book is part of an awareness programme of LIVNG with KOALAS, a social enterprise launched to help with the conservation and regeneration of the wild koala population in the local area. The Port Macquarie/Hastings Council estimate the number of koalas surviving in this region, previously a real stronghold for koalas, could be less than 2,000, with numbers rapidly decreasing. Sadly, and to the shame of all Australians, the koala is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as a VULNERABLE species, with many experts now agreeing they could be extinct in the wild within 50 years. They will be rarely seen in this area within 25 years. Action needs to be taken now. Everyone can get involved. See the LIVING with KOALAS website for details www.lwk.net.au and get in touch. The difference between human action and inaction is… extinction for the wild koala population.

New effort to boost tourism THE region’s wineries, cellar doors and tourism operators are being urged to join a new national effort to attract more international wine tourists to Australia. Local businesses are being encouraged to apply to the Australian Government’s $5 million International Wine Tourism Competitive Grants program and work together to develop unique and innovative wine tourism experiences throughout the region. With the support of the Coalition Government, Australia’s wine industry is transforming its marketing efforts and this presents opportunities for local businesses. These grants will help fund wine tourism marketing campaigns, wine events, infrastructure and innovative products to attract international tourists to the Mid-North Coast and Hunter wine regions. Locally, we know the value of giving tourists a great time and providing a first-hand experience into how we make and enjoy our wine and food. Our wine region has a great story to tell and we want to tell it to the increasing number of international visitors who are making the trip to Australian shores to enjoy our region’s wines. There is also the $5 million International Wine Tourism State Grants, which will provide

the NSW wine association with funding to invest in international wine tourism research, planning and implementation activities. Together, these grants enhance the wine tourism experiences of international visitors - helping grow wine exports and further strengthening the reputation of our region’s wines on the international stage. The grants are part of the Federal Coalition Government’s $50 million Export and Regional Wine Support Package over three–year strategy to increase the value of wine exports up to a record $3.5 billion and attract an additional 40,000 international tourists to Australian wine regions. They are administered by Wine Australia. For more information on how to apply, visit http://erwsp.wineaustralia.com. Applications close 5pm, Friday, 2 March 2018 ACDT.
THE North Coast Public Health Unit has warned of the potential health risks associated with recent and predicted hot weather. Public Health Unit Director Paul Corben said with more hot summer conditions forecast it is important that people take precautions to prevent heat-related illness. “Heat-related illness ranges from mild conditions to very serious medical emergencies. While heat-related illness can affect anyone, certain groups of people are particularly vulnerable,” he said. “These include older people, infants and children, people with a chronic medical condition and those who live alone. Mr Corben said the following simple precautions will help minimise the risk: • Drink plenty of water, and remember to carry some with you when out and about. • Avoid alcoholic, hot or sugary drinks. • Plan your day around the heat, particularly in the middle of the day, and minimise physical activity. • Keep the sun out by shading windows with curtains, blinds or closing shutters. • Keep windows closed during the day until it cools down and in early morning. • If you don’t have an air-conditioner, try to spend time in an air-conditioned place like a shopping centre, library or cinema. • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibres like cotton. • When outdoors, stay protected from the sun by wearing a hat and sunscreen.
Clown origins in country, not circus my HOW many of you have ever been to the circus? I have, and I would say just about everyone has experienced the circus atmosphere at some period in their lives. As people grow older they see little need to continue going to the circus, although they would go if only to accompany little ones, to see the smile on their faces as they take in the circus atmosphere, especially the clowns, Did you know clowns were boorish fellows and the word goes back to way past 1563? I did not know. I thought clowns were just there to make people laugh. Then I thought about it and I reckon those boorish people several hundred years ago must have had a terrible life, being on the receiving end of jokes and torment. Some people say the word clown comes from around Scandinavia and it meant a clumsy fellow. The word was originally spelt as cloune, cloine or as cloyne and it appeared in the English language as cloyne or cloine and then as clowne. Remember that people couldn’t spell in those days. Some still can’t, but I will deny I ever said that. Some dictionaries still don’t include the word clown. The Webster says clown represents “a clumsy, boorish fellow, an awkward country fellow, a man of coarse manners, a person without refinement, a lout”. It does mention a performer

in a circus or play “usually in ridiculous dress and make-up”. Then it goes on to mention rude, coarse, awkward, ungainly and so on. I could read some of my best friends in there. My Collins says a clown is someone who does silly things to make people laugh. Eliezer Edwards’ 1901 dictionary says a clown comes from the Latin colunus. It was formerly spelt colone, according to Edwards, but the original meaning was one who tilled the ground. His dictionary is well out of date by now. But the Merriam Webster people refer to colonus, a farmer, so Edwards was on to something, but why single out farmers? I know lots of farmers, some of whom are reasonably respectable. A lot aren’t, but that’s another story. John Ayto admits the origins of clown are obscure, but he goes on anyway to mention that it seems to refer to a boorish country fellow and then mentions colonus.
He mentions that country people lack sophistication. What a terrible thing to say about country people! Another dictionary talks about “a lump of clay”. Another makes reference to Bozo, but that is a name some clowns used. My big dictionary (20 volumes, published by Oxford, answering many queries) says it has some difficulty understanding some of the links. It talks about a kleun, a bouncing girl, but it says that in English the word clown comes from some low German source. It does mention clod, lot, lump along with country. It also mentions a peasant, rude manners, a man without refinement, an ill-bred man. Then it mentions other expressions, such as clown’s heal, clown’s lungwort, clown’s mustard and clown’s treacle, none of which I have experienced. In 1881 a comment was made along the lines of “How could a country gentleman have a son who was so great a clown in his manner and his talk”. At least some gentlemen come from the country. Most of the dictionaries seem to have mentioned the circus clown, but then you know about them. They act the fool – and I can imagine that was the only way the original clowns could gain acceptance, by playing the fool. lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

Perfect start to new season PORT Macquarie Sailing Club held the first race of their summer series on Sunday on a glorious sunny day in a light north easter with the start of the run-out tide. There are no handicap results until after the 3rd race has been sailed. The catamaran fleet had a good turn up after many of the Arrow cats had just returned from the National titles at Saratoga where Frank O’Rourke on Dino came 2nd again this year, and Rohan Nosworthy on Return was 3rd. However, on Sunday, Tony Kuhn on Stella took the win on yardstick ahead of Jack Corthals on Harpic, Rob Barwick on Drift, and Dave Winter on Spica. The monohulls had a lot of close on-water racing, especially between Terry Howard in Ratz and Phil and Blake Lillehagen in Elmo. Once the yardsticks were applied, Ratz took 1st place, Tony Walker in Deep Purple snuck into 2nd, just 23 seconds ahead of Elmo in 3rd. They were followed by Stuart Symons and Steve Couch in Big Bang, and Jane Cooper and Norman Broomhall in Jupiter. Next Sunday is race 2 of the summer series with a 2pm start. Help is needed for the duty.
Terry Howard in Ratz, who won the monohulls on yardstick.
A comical history LOCAL historian and John Oxley buff, Richard Grimmond, has compiled a new comic book ‘A Bicentenary Comic Book for Kids (of all ages)’ to commemorate the Bicentenary of Surveyor General John Oxley’s arrival in the Hastings in 1818. The 14-page black and white comic style book features illustrations and text by Richard Grimmond with quotes from John Oxley’s journal. It is a fun and quick way to learn more about John Oxley’s journey of discovery to our region. “October 2018 marks the bicentenary of Surveyor General John Oxley’s arrival in our region after his exploration journey from Bathurst, down the Macquarie River, over the New England range and down the Hastings River to the place he named Port Macquarie, after the then Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie”, says Port Macquarie Historical Society President Clive Smith. “The Bicentenary Comic Book tells the story of Oxley’s journey in a simplistic and entertaining way and will appeal to both children and adults. “1818 was an important year in our local and Australian history, as Oxley’s expedition had far reaching consequences not only on white settlement but on the lives of our first inhabitants. “In commemorating the bicentenary of John Oxley’s arrival it is important that we
Richard Grimmond with his historical comic book remember our first local people, the Birpai, and ensure that our commemorations are respectful of the impact that white settlement had and still has on our First Nations Peoples.” Port Macquarie’s white settlement began in 1821 when a British convict establishment was built here. The Oxley Bicentenary Comic Book is available for purchase from the Port Macquarie Museum and costs only $2.
On the back cover Richard Grimmond has named many places, people and businesses that use the name Oxley today. The Port Macquarie Museum will host a number of events during 2018 to commemorate the Oxley Bicentenary. The Port Macquarie Museum is located at 22 Clarence Street, Port Macquarie, within Port Macquarie’s cultural heritage precinct. For enquiries phone 02 6583 1108.

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC IT’S a case of New Zealand’s loss is Port Macquarie’s gain. Versatile Kiwi singer, songwriter and musician Mark Taipari has been performing for over 35 years and now he is bringing his harmonica and guitar across ‘The Ditch’ and basing his ‘Aussie invasion’ out of the Mid North Coast. “My fans in New Zealand are really sad to see me go but I’m really looking forward to taking my career to the next level and hopefully getting a great fan base in Australia,” said Mark. “I think people will really enjoy my music on the Mid North Coast because it’s very relaxed but I can also play such a variety. I play for the people. “I’ve played in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Coolangatta, and a few beach towns in Australia before and I loved it. “I’ve been in the music industry since I was 15 and I’ve had a great career here in New Zealand, but I am also looking forward to playing alongside other musicians in Port Macquarie.” Mark will be coming to Port Macquarie for six weeks later this month and will be playing at venues across the Mid North Coast. “I am renowned for bringing a place alive at functions and clubs but also for playing relaxing and smooth sounds for a quieter

relaxed situation,” said Mark. “I know many songs that are not on the list and play them by request.” Mark says he has the best job in the world because he not only gets to play his own music but he also gets to perform his Neil Diamond Tribute Show. “I would play a few Neil Diamond songs at gigs and people would be taken aback by how similar I sounded to him,” explained Mark. “My friends then told me I should start a tribute show and it just wasn’t my style, but then I started researching more of his songs and his life and I was blown away by his life and his music. “I get people saying to me that they feel like they are at a Neil Diamond concert and they get quite emotional, and that is such a huge compliment. I really admire Neil Diamond. I enjoy it so much now and I really hope to bring that show to Australia too.” Mark is keen to play in as many venues as possible on the Mid North Coast, from pubs, clubs, garden bars, restaurants, and corporate events. Mark Taipari will be kicking off his Australian venture on Saturday January 27 at the Port City Bowling Club. For more information visit Mark’s Facebook Page or his website www.marktaipari.com Have a listen to Mark’s music by searching Mark Taipari on youtube.com which dates you are not available.
