Thank you mate! By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

YOU come in all shapes, sizes, abilities and ages. You are the fabric that keeps our’s and every community together. You give without taking. Offer without judging. Always with a smile. You are the volunteer and this week is your week. Across the Mid North Coast, in fact across Australia, this week is National Volunteer Week. It’s a chance for us all to say ‘thank you’. Your Local Independent this week includes a special feature (Pages 12 and 13) highlighting the work of our volunteers. It is true, we could not operate without our volunteers. From sports teams through to funding for vital research to find medical cures, within every school, at our beaches, when floods or fires strike, when we need a shoulder to cry on – our volunteers are there. This region has a proud history of producing the very best volunteers – so many people who give selflessly. So thank you. You are all champions. (P.S. As we thank our volunteers, remember there is always a need somewhere for more helpers.) • Read more about our great volunteers on Pages 12-13

One of our great volunteer organisations - the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie – recently awarded their Emergency Service ‘2017 Volunteer of the Year’. There were joint winners, Kim Rayner (Surf Life Saving) and Bruce Blackburn (Rural Fire Service). Pictured with them at the presentation were (left) Kevin Sherwood (Area Controller, SES State Emergency Services) and (right) Gil Padarin-Innes, President of the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie.

Sweet smell of success “

It is an amazing sight to see the beautiful, rich, dark-chocolate coloured soil of garlic beds, with the river in the background and all these beautiful people planting this crop

MACLEAY Valley garlic producers have reported perfect conditions for planting the new season’s crop of sweet organic Russian garlic. Macleay Valley Food Bowl producers Marcus Skipper and Sally Ayre-Smith, who own Sweet Water Farm, are the largest certified organic garlic producers in the region. They have just finished planting 1.5 tonnes of garlic. The planting was carried out with the help of a group of French travellers - the Willing Workers On Organic Farms or WWOOFers and some of Sweet Water Farm’s neighbours. WWOOFers work on farms in exchange for meals and accommodation. “We couldn’t carry out our planting and harvesting every year without the WWOOFers,” said Sally. She said recent weather conditions had been ideal for planting. “It is an amazing sight to see the beautiful, rich, dark-chocolate coloured soil of garlic beds, with the river in the background and all these beautiful people planting this crop,” Sally said. Sweet Water Farm’s garlic is planted in April each year and harvested mid-November. Once harvested, the curing process takes around six weeks and the garlic is then available for sale. The Mid North Coast produces between 70 and 80 tonnes of garlic each year. According to the NSW Department of Primary Industries, Australia annually produces between 300 and 500 tonnes of garlic. Sally and husband Marcus moved to the Macleay Valley from Sydney in 2007 and decided to become garlic farmers after purchasing their 25-acre property at Sherwood. “Life was very stressful in Sydney. We had big careers and Marcus had a few health issues so we thought ‘That’s it! We’re out of here’,” Sally explained. “We drove up from Sydney and found this place and fell in love with that view.

Above: Garlic farmer Marcus Skipper, who owns Sweet Water Farm, is enjoying perfect weather conditions for a bumper harvest this year. Below: The Willing Workers On Organic Farms or ‘WWOOFers’ are crucial to the crop’s success.

“We were looking at how we could make a living so we had an agronomist come out to give us some advice. I decided to go to TAFE and did a Certificate III course in organic farming. “I then bought the school’s garlic that year, which was a 100kgs for $1000. We started with

that and now we grow 7 tonnes of commercial garlic a year.” The thriving business has recently seen Sally and Marcus become involved in the development of NSW’s first certified organic distribution centre, which will be constructed at

the Farrawell’s Industrial Estate adjacent to the Highway Service Centre. The distribution centre will be owned and run by a number of local growers as well as South Australia based company, Natural Organics. Sally said the construction of the $2 million centre, which will also feature a retail shop, is scheduled to commence in the near future, with an anticipated opening date this July. Kempsey Council’s Economic Sustainability Officer, Kristy Forche-Baird, said the construction of the centre made it a perfect time to establish an agribusiness in the Macleay Valley. “The opening of the centre is yet another great reason to establish a high value agribusiness in the Macleay. The centre will bring increased demand for locally grown organic certified produce, increasing supply opportunities for local growers,” she said. “For existing landholders looking to diversify or people looking to start a new agribusiness venture, Council has produced the Macleay Valley Food Bowl Agribusiness Investment Guide, which provides useful economic and climate information, land capability mapping and the identification of high value crops and livestock suitable for local growth.”

Wauchope’s old footpaths aren’t safe THESE photos show the reality of what can happen when someone has a fall on a degraded footpath. What you can’t see are the bruises or the shock that’s sustained as well. This is also the reality of what can happen any day of the week on old and degraded footpaths in the Wauchope CBD. Councillors have been aware of falls suffered by residents for years because of footpaths that are arguably

the oldest in the Hastings. Regardless of the fact that that they have an obligation to provide safety in public places, this situation is ignored. Now we have them voting for the ultimate indulgence – tenders are out for BESPOKE furniture. It’s obvious that the majority of Councillors don’t live in our neck of the woods! Many have issues with proposed airport expansion I AM writing to confirm some information stated previously, regarding the proposal for increasing flying activity at Kempsey Airport by Australian International Aviation College. As stated earlier, the proposed additional flight activity of 27,000 movements is information proposed by the applicant, Australian International Aviation College. The movements are over a calendar year, operating 6am to midnight 365 days a year. This represents a significant increase compared to closer larger airports such as Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie.

These facts are clear requests made by the college in MOU’s and DA’s made to Kempsey Council and any claim to them not being factual can be substantiated at the Council. The disputed details regarding Port Macquarie Airport not having a tower was an indicator implying Port Macquarie’s facilities were far more extensive and up to date compared to Kempsey regarding air traffic monitoring and tracking. The fact that an aircraft can only be measured one at one time might be correct. However, having that noise (drone) as a constant 18 hours a day, 365 days a year is unacceptable. I reiterate, multiply an individual

THANK you to a total stranger named Grant and his young grandson who, out of the kindness of their hearts, helped me move several heavy pieces of furniture in his ute to my home. He wouldn’t take any money for his kindness, he was just happy to help me out. You were sent by an angel that day. I still feel very emotional and teary about a stranger helping me like this. What a wonderful, generous and gracious person you are and your young grandson was a delightful and courteous young boy. Bless the both of you and your families.

TO the four-wheel drivers who think it’s cool to drive up into the sandhills now that Lighthouse Beach is no longer navigable due exposed rocks. They should be made aware that they are destroying the sandhills and the vegetation that binds them together. Where are our rangers? Chasing surfers away from our car parks no doubt!

Thumbs Up I WANT to thank the lovely lady who works at Ryan’s Bakery, I think her name is Mandy. She went out of her way to bring a single loaf of sourdough bread to my home in Wauchope in time for Easter. This was because the sourdough loaf is only baked a couple of times a week and it was just being prepared when I went into the shop on Thursday morning, hoping to get a loaf for Easter. She saw my disappointment and immediately offered to bring it to me after she left work. The Ryan’s sourdough loaf is delicious and by far the best one available in the district.

Thumbs up TO David, Bridgette and Casey at Sundial Dental in Wauchope for a very professional and confidence-boosting time at the dentist. High recommendations for anyone wanting an uplifting experience at the dentist.

I ABSOLUTELY loathe junk mail! Junk mail is everywhere. You’ll find it either lying around wet and soggy on the front lawn or filling your letterbox most days instead of – mail! With the age of the internet, junk mail just got more invasive. I clear 40 or more junk mail items from my computer – every single day. Today is extra special though, today out of 48 junk emails, before lunch, I received two infringement notices – one from Fines Victoria, a traffic infringement for negligent driving in Victoria on the 12th April and the other from Western Australia Police for the same day… apparently, they have photographic evidence to boot! So far, I’ve managed two fines to the value of $337 from two separate states on the same day. Clever aye? Hold on, it’s all good; I’ll be able to fund payment of the ‘fines’ with the six different notifications that I’ve been paid a total of $108,744.07 overnight! Woohoo! According to all the scam/spam crap that lands in my email – I should be able to live comfortably, without buying anything ever again, just on the FREE vouchers, vacuum cleaners, cars, holidays and everything else imaginable. Add to that the average of $75,000-$100,000 per day that I get told has been transferred to my account and I should be retiring! Wouldn’t it be nice!

Thumbs Down

making a decision until a more comprehensive and accurate study on noise pollution, chemical contamination, traffic issues and other environmental issues were to be studied. Another recent revelation is that Kempsey Councillors have rejected a proposal that the AIAC College loan Kempsey Council $500,000 to improve and increase the fuel facility at the airport. The college also quoted to build this construction. This quite clearly reeks of conflicts of interest on behalf of Council as well as the college. Glen Ravenscroft Temagog

Many of the pilots, hanger owners, operators and airport users, along with the majority of landowners around the airport, have issues with this proposal. Pilots have voiced that the airport cannot manage that quantity of traffic, indeed it will create a precariously dangerous situation. Some of the pilots and hangar owners spoke at the meeting held by the Joint Regional Planning Panel voicing these concerns back on March 15, 2017. The Panel elected to suspend

LETTERS Councillors were not the innocent victims of state govt’s dismissal IN your May 4 article “Glasshouse Pays Off” Adam Roberts seems to be under the impression that the then councillors were innocent victims (who “bore the brunt”) in the dismissal of the Council by the state government. In my understanding there were two reasons for the sacking: 1. The Council delivered a slap in the face to the Minister for Local Government by defying his demand not to award a contract for the construction until the government’s enquiry was finalized, and 2. Any excuse was better than none for the (Labor) government to sack a National Partycontrolled council. This wasn’t the first. The first point explains the councillors’ role, which was not an innocent one. They, not the Council staff, made the decision to defy the Minister. A lot of people who opposed the building of the Glasshouse were more concerned with the location than the design or even the cost. The present site is handy to the business interests of some of the then councillors, but useless for motorists to stop and seek tourist information. It is still unsatisfactory in relation to parking facilities. The alternative site, where Coles is located, would have been much more convenient for everyone except the owners of tourist-related businesses in the CBD. John Neilson Port Macquarie

Is the Council listening to local commmunity? WAUCHOPE still awaits the pontoon and bank repairs promised for Rocks Ferry Reserve by Council. Funds have been provided for the pontoon by the state government over a year ago and consultation has occurred with the community Again, the grant money provided may have paid for the complete installation of the boat pontoon, but two years later, as costs continue to rise, ratepayers may again have to chip in the difference to the cost. Design is to occur for the children’s water play area and grandstand with half of the funds provided by the federal government. We can only hope that this does not get delayed and see those funds fall short for the total project with residents paying considerably more due to rising costs. Wauchope will have money spent on sports fields. The budget intends to provide $10 millon for the development of the Wauchope sports field which will possibly run out to $20 million by project end. The Wauchope land floods and so does Tuffins Lane (which has been purchased by the Catholic Church), so what is the gain?

Appropriate planning to determine project costs (including fill and drainage) and what sports fit with the location that could bring state or higher competition with local facilities in mind needs to be undertaken. To relocate sports groups from one area to another is an ineffective use of ratepayer money. When spending money Council should reflect on community aspirations. Community money was spent on the Wauchope pool upgrade and then locals were denied the indoor heated pool. A dog park, a slip lane to Cameron Street to reduce congestion, footpaths, improved pavements and roads - these are what the community has been requesting for many years. Wauchope will have money spent on a sports field which the community has not been asking for, is Council listening to the community? There is no issue with the planning and preparing for the Wauchope sports field development but there should be triggers (risk, growth, etc) which instigate the timing for project commencement rather than randomly completing projects Sharon Griffiths

I RECENTLY visited my family in Sydney, travelling from Wauchope to Strathfield by train. Whilst waiting at the station in the morning I watched as the stationhand sold tickets, booked in baggage, answered the phone, closed the shutter and locked the office when the train arrived. He then pushed the baggage trolley all the way to the back of the train to load the baggage. He also had to help any disabled person who

needed help boarding the train. That was a lot of work for one person. I don’t know if he had to clean the station and toilets as well or mow the grass. As Wauchope is a major station on the North Coast line I believe it should have two people working to meet the train. Sandra Wilson

IT’S time to recognise the commitment of those Australians working to protect the Sandy Macke environment and delivering more sustainable agriculture. Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister, Luke Hartsuyker, has urged all Landcare groups and volunteers to nominate those hard-working, passionate people for recognition in the 2017 Landcare awards. “Landcare is an important part of the Australian Government’s billion dollar-plus investment in improving the condition of our natural resources including soil health, and it’s vital we acknowledge those individuals, partnerships and organisations that are carrying out this essential work,” Mr Hartsuyker said. All winners at the state and territory level will go on to be finalists at the 2018 National Landcare Awards. To find out more or submit a nomination visithttps://e-award.com.au/2017/ landcareawards/newentry/about.php.

Preschool boost

FAMILIES in Crescent Head will have more opportunities to find preschool places following an investment of $99,720 to upgrade the Crescent Head Community Pre-School Inc as part of the NSW Government’s $8 million Capital Works program. Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey, together with the Minister for Early Childhood Education, Sarah Mitchell, announced the allocation on a recet visit to Crescent Head today. “It’s great that local families will benefit from an upgrade to this local service. Research demonstrates that children benefit socially, emotionally and cognitively from access to quality early childhood education so this program has a real and lasting benefit for families with young children,” Mrs Pavey said. The Capital Works Grants program provides funding for not-for-profit, community-based preschools to increase the number of places for children at 15 hours per week.

Choir’s singing unites us By SUE PATERICK

LIKE our ancestors, the Yarrapinni Choir uses singing to unite people, cultures and communities. Choir teacher Ruth Nolan, from Stuarts Point, said singing evolved before language and our ancestors communicated through rhythm and melodies. “Ordinary people sang as part of daily life until 100 years ago, and we sang while we worked, played and prayed,” she said. “We don’t do this in Western culture anymore. “Our modern lifestyle and technology has separated us, but singing unites us.” Ruth was born in England and was part of the folk revival. She sang with acapella groups in pubs in England where everyone knew a common core repertoire, whether singing in Newcastle or London. “I missed that when I came to live in Australia,” Ruth said. “There isn’t a culture of commonly-known songs here but I think world music has filled that gap.” In the 1990s Ruth ran singing camps that hosted teachers from other cultures who sang old traditional songs and material collected in South Africa by Miriam Makeba to preserve language and culture. The singing camps attracted people from near and far. A Creative Arts Therapist, Ruth believes singing is therapeutic and uplifting. “It’s fun by yourself but when you sing with a group of people it can also be very powerful, especially acapella as there are no instruments,” she said. “The way all the voices of an acapella choir blend together can become very pure.” This sublime purity is enhanced when singing in a foreign language like Latin. “Singing in a group is a very spiritual experience and you can actually feel physical vibrations in your body,” Ruth continued. “The feeling is amazing, uplifting, calming and joyous.” Ruth also believes when singing our bodies become an instrument for emotional expression. “Joyous singing is also pathway into mindfulness and is a fun way to use both sides of your brain,” she said. The Yarrapinni Choir first formed in 1994 when a group of people wanted to get together to sing. It became a reality when some of this diverse group of artists, dancers, members of the Stuarts Point Players and environmentalists heard the Bellingen Acapella Choir perform at a benefit night. “When we all heard this magnificent choir, we decided to form a choir of our own and asked Bellingen’s Brian Martin to teach us,” Ruth said.

Ruth taught the first class and then Brian came along to teach after that. “Everyone loved it,” Ruth said. Influential acapella singer from Thora, Fiona McKenzie, took over the Yarrapinni Choir next until she headed off to Africa for musical inspiration. Ruth stepped up as teacher for three months to keep the choir going. Terry Parkhouse from Grassy Head also took over as singing teacher on various occasions. Terry is in his eighties, proving anyone can begin a new career at any age. According to Ruth, he came to singing late in life at the age of 60 and still sings with the choir. “Singing and composing just became part of his life,” she said. When Ruth moved back to Melbourne for

seven years, Fiona took over again and infused the choir with African freedom songs and gospel. The Yarrapinni Choir, with Ruth back at the helm, also sing traditional songs with a Gypsy influence from places like Czechoslovakia and Macedonia. “We sing songs that have an uplifting quality that are about freedom, solidarity and healing,” she said. “Some are sad and very haunting.” The Yarrapinni Choir has performed at the Funkya Unkya Markets at Eungai, the Yarrahapinni Festival, and the Macleay Valley Art Council’s Oddfellows Hall in West Kempsey. It also formed a Pop-up Choir at a textile art exhibition at the Macleay Valley Community Art Gallery in Gladstone last year. “It was an informal performance,” Ruth added. “And while singing at the gallery, a shopkeeper came in and asked if we would also sing in her shop.”

The Yarrapinni Choir meets in Macksville on Tuesdays between 6pm and 8pm at the Uniting Church Hall at 54 Wallace Street to learn new songs, practise repertoire and develop singing skills. Cost is $10 and school-age children are free. Ruth is very grateful to the male bass singers who form part of the choir’s Kempsey branch and travel up to Macksville each week. She teaches this very informal and fun group weekly at 12 Cochrane Street in West Kempsey. “I teach the Yarrapinni Choir repertoire in Kempsey so that we have extra singers by drawing on both groups for performances,” Ruth said. The Kempsey branch meets on Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm and cost is $15.00 per class. For more information on becoming a Yarrapinni Choir member contact Ruth on 0431 868 149.

Waterways report A NEW report card on the health of waterways in the Macleay Catchment was launched recently at Riverside Park, Kempsey. The report will guide future environmental programs for a number of agencies. The report was undertaken by the UNE Aquatic Ecology and Restoration Research Group and coordinated by Kempsey Shire Council, North Coast Local Land Services (NCLLS), Northern Table Lands, Local Land Services (NTLLS) and the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH). It measures key indicators of aquatic ecosystem health and compares results against national guidelines to determine how healthy the rivers and estuaries are for the plants and animals that live in them. Launching the report card were representatives from Council, NCLLS, OEH and the UNE Aquatic Ecology and Restoration Research Group.

The Macleay Valley’s first Ecohealth report card was launched at Riverside Park by Mayor Liz Campbell, centre, Council’s Senior Natural Resources Officer Ron Kemsley and representatives from North Coast Local Land Services, Northern Table Lands Local Land Services, the Office of Environment and Heritage and the University of New England

Airport survey is part of plan THE Kempsey Shire Council will include a community survey and workshop in developing a Fly Neighbourly Agreement for all users of Kempsey Airport. The proposal to proceed with a Fly Neighborly Agreement, which will include a Noise Management Plan, was endorsed at a recent Council meeting. Council general manager David Rawlings said the Agreement would bring together many of the details of Kempsey Airport operations, including future operations of the Australian International Aviation College (AIAC) and the requirements of different authorities and regulators that Council has to work with in operating an airport.

Chinese-owned AIAC’s $18m plan to expand its flying school and increase the number of daily flights has upset some residents concerned by the increased air traffic and associated noise. The Development Application states that there will be 23,000 flights taking off from Kempsey Airport in 2018 between 6am and midnight, seven days a week. “It is intended to prepare a Noise Management Plan which will form the basis of the Fly Neighbourly Agreement and allow for balanced consideration of all airport impacts and users,” Mr Rawlings said The purporse of the Noise Management Plan is to gain a detailed understanding of the

The Old Cheese Factory Riverside Restaurant

impact of noise on surrounding residents from aircraft operated by the AIAC and other aircraft operators. The plan will help determine the appropriate numbers, frequency and the duration of aircraft movements taking into account resident expectations and operational requirements of airport users. Community engagement will be an important part of the process, including a survey and independently facilitated workshops. It is expected that an ongoing Airport Consultative Group involving community, Council and airport users will be an outcome of the process. “Conducting the community engagement,

preparing the Noise Management Plan and the subsequent Fly Neighbourly Agreement will require specialist consultants who bring a level of expertise and independence to the process,” Mr Rawlings said. “At this stage it is proposed that it may take just over 12 months before the Agreement is formally entered into, but the resolution of council to proceed gives a clear direction on managing the airport use and involving the community.” The Joint Regional Planning Panel will be advised of council’s resolution in reference to future consideration of the pending Development Application lodged by AIAC.

Locals open up over their ‘favourites’

Gerry Byron COMMUNITY radio station 2WAYFM, will be hosting a series of local guest personalities on their latest program, Tropical Island Tracks. Each week, announcer, John Shearer will be introducing a local, community based personality to the listeners. John says: “We value our place in the community and strive to be an informative source for all our listeners. “Tropical Island Tracks will allow us to get to know our guests and hopefully unravel more about them over the interview. “Without being invasive – the idea is to find out more of the who, how, what and why; these people play such a role in the structure and fabric of the community.” Each Tropical Island Tracks guest is asked to provide five or six musical pieces (songs/tracks) they would like to take with them, should they be stranded on a deserted island or in the bush. They also have to consider some other items they would deem necessary to take with them and why. First cab off the rank, last week, was Ross Cutrupi from Panthers Rock and Roll Dance Club. Today at 10.30am, is Port’s own Centre of Entertainment, Gerry Byron. A former rugby league player who is well known locally for hosting interactive entertainment events, Gerry is well known and loved in the community and will certainly be worth tuning in for. Over the coming months, John has a plethora of locals confirmed to participate on the show including: Andrew Norman from Noshtalgia Café and Sandy Mackenzie from Your Local Independent newspaper. The show is intended to be informative. It’s certainly going to be entertaining!

THE Federal Coalition Government is providing almost $6 million to continue support for prostate cancer specialist nurses in 15 locations across Australia, with the Mid-North Coast set to benefit. Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting men, with over 16,000 Australians expected to be diagnosed this year and although it has a 95 per cent fiveyear survival rate, more than 3000 men die from it each year. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia will use the funding for 14 fulltime nurses through to 2019-20, to support men with prostate cancer. The Mid-North Coast Cancer Centre will be funded through the program to provide a prostate cancer nurse for our local area. This funding will continue to support prostate cancer nurse positions here on the Mid-North Coast so that men with cancer, and their families, receive the support and information they need. The program has been in operation since 2014 and these nurses are on track to assist around 4000 men and their families by September, 2017. Men diagnosed with prostate cancer often see a range of health care professionals over a length of time. By funding these nurses we can make sure men battling prostate cancer receive the necessary and timely coordinated care they require.

Italian theatre the start of zany comedy

IN the 16th century the Italian theatre developed the commedia dell’arte, where comedies developed from ordinary life. One of these characters in the commedia dell’arte was a clown who mimicked the actions of his principal. The stock name for such a character was Zanni, which developed from the Italian name Giovanni, which in English was a name for John. I wasn’t able to find an illustration before the time of Shakespeare. Writing in Love’s Labour Lost, Shakespeare wrote: “Some carry-tale, some pleaseman, some slight Zanie, that knows the trick to make my lady laugh”. By the early 17th century anybody who made a laughing stock of himself to amuse others was called a zany. From that developed the meaning of slightly crazy. Over the years the emphasis has been slightly less crazy, but crazy nevertheless. Zany began life as a corruption of the Italian word for Giovanni, but he was also known as Merry Andrew. But his name was spelt as zanni. Commedia dell’arte (which roughly translates as “theatre of the professional”) began in Italy in the early 16th century and quickly spread

my

throughout Europe, creating a lasting influence on Shakespeare, Molière, opera, vaudeville, contemporary musical theatre, sitcoms and comedy. Commedia dell’arte is a form of theatre characterised by masked “types” which began in Italy in the 16th century and was responsible for the advent of the actresses and improvised performances based on sketches or scenarios. The name zany was broadened out to buffoon in the 17th century, but the name zany does not seem to have established itself as an adjective until the 19th century. But the name seems to have adopted a slightly softer image, very softly. Previously the clown adopted a slightly awkward, even ludicrously awkward, method. Nevertheless, a crowd of people conducting themselves like fools at a party could be

considered as acting in a zany fashion. And I have seen many of them, so I expect have you. In the commedia dell’arte a clowning servant was zanni and his role was to make fun of his master or those around him. By the time the word entered the English language, it meant any foolish person. My 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue said zany meant “the jester, jack pudding, or merry andrew, to a mountebank”. (A mountebank was a person who deceived others, or behaved as a charlatan”.) Ambrose Bierce in his 1881 dictionary said a zany was a popular character in Italian plays who imitated with ludicrous incompetence the buffoon, or clown “and was therefore the ape of an ape, for the clown himself imitated the serious characters of the play”. Words similar to zany might include comical, eccentric, kooky, loony, clownish, hair-brained, nutty. Other words include combine, harlequin, pantalone which became pantaloon, even slapstick. Maybe you would be better off if you steered clear of zany, unless you know the person really well. Maybe not even then. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.

Port plays part in Festival Workshop targets Facebook

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC BE a part of the Sydney Writers’ Festival right here in Port Macquarie. Writers from the Mid North Coast will be heading to the Glasshouse to take part in the live stream from Sydney for the Sydney Writers’ Festival. “I’m looking for inspiration and gaining knowledge to do with writing,” said Wendy Haynes, event coordinator, from the Port Writers’ Inc. “You are learning about the life of writers as well, and I suppose, understanding where a lot of the stories come from.” Audiences will be able to actively participate in the sessions by submitting questions to the guest authors in Sydney via a live feed. This year’s festival is tied together by the theme of ‘refuge’. Wendy will be attending the Friday sessions and says she is looking forward to connecting with other writers. “There will be three authors talking to Michael Williams about the challenges and consequences of writing from life and family life, so that could be writing a memoir or a biography,” said Wendy. There will also be presentations from Michaela McGuire, a prizewinning journalist and best-selling author.” The Mid North Coast is known for its creative flavour, and events like these cater for the many writers across many different genres and forms. “I think the passion for writing in Port Macquarie is growing,” said Wendy. “We’ve gained a lot of membership and contacts from the Grassroots Writer’s Weekend and I think more people are coming out of the woodwork. “Some are into creative non-fiction, some like to write educational manuals, a lot of us are fictional. We’ve got a quite a few poets and I like doing children’s writing. “There’s such a huge variety and we all look

Booker Prize-winning author Richard Flanagan at last year’s Sydney Writers’ Festival at it differently. We’re all in different areas in life and our writing.” The Sydney Writers’ Festival will take place from Friday, May 26, to Sunday, May 28, at the Glasshouse Port Macquarie. Many of the top Sydney Writers’ Festival events will be live streamed and available for viewing in the Ross Family Studio at the Glasshouse throughout the weekend. New waste bins RESIDENTS throughout the Kempsey Shire will soon receive their new domestic waste bins, with the six-week process of deliveries having started on May 8. Kempsey Shire Council’s Manager of Technical and Civic Services, Trevor Dickson, says the bin delivery is one of the large logistical milestones in implementing the new waste collection service that starts in July. “The bin delivery is being managed by our new contractors Cleanaway and it will take about six weeks to get three new bins delivered to all 12,000 residential properties with a waste service. We are aware that moving to a system of three bins and weekly green bin collection is a big change to manage and all along the way we are making lots of information available to help residents sort their household waste properly,” said Mr Dickson. Attached to the new bins will be an information kit containing a Waste Services Guide and fridge magnet. The Guide covers what can go in each of the three bins, provides handy hints and maps for each of the waste facilities in the area. Each household will also receive a kitchen caddy and roll of compostable liners to help make it easy to collect and carry food scraps to the green bin. “The old bins will be collected after the last pick-up at the end of June so we are asking residents to make sure they secure the new bins in their yard until it’s time to start using them. If people are away and can ask friends or neighbours to bring their new bins in from the street that would fantastic. Council are working directly with strata managers and real estate agents to manage the delivery of appropriate numbers of new bins to large unit blocks. Mayor’s resignation came as no surprise There was no “surprise about

The Rinse Cycle By Adam Roberts - Former Councillor,

the decision to resign and I did think that the decision was a good one on his part, as well as being overdue

Port MacquarieHastings Council

THIS week’s announcement by Peter Besseling to resign as mayor may have surprised a few people given he was only just re-elected to lead a fresh four-year term. For some people, they saw the situation coming and again, others thought that the decision was long overdue. For me personally, there was no surprise about the decision to resign and I did think that the decision was a good one on his part, as well as being overdue. It’s no secret that I haven’t been a keen Besseling supporter in recent years but I will acknowledge that he has given more than four and a half years of his career to trying to make a difference for the Port Macquarie Hastings community in the office of mayor. Having been deputy mayor during his first term, I did get the distinct impression that he was, in most cases, genuinely interested in seeing positive outcomes for the community. I did also see a lot of decisions and behaviours that I was less than impressed with and I made a point of making a point of that, with him in person or voicing my opinions on those matters publicly. Peter Besseling should be commended for his service in the office of mayor, equally he should be commended for stepping aside to pursue another career and in effect, potentially clearing the way for some refreshment to this most important of community roles. With a vacancy in the office of mayor, the current deputy mayor Lisa Intemann will step up between now and the declared election of a new mayor. That alone will be interesting to watch. Lisa has indicated that she will not run for mayor. After a resignation from a councillor or mayor, a by-election must be held for the vacant position(s) within three months. There has already been comment from the Council’s General Manager that this election may take place in July this year. Just two short months away. To add an extra layer of complexity to the situation, Peter’s right-hand man Cr Rob Turner put out an announcement that he will run for the office of mayor almost simultaneously with the mayor’s announcement to resign. Cr Turner will also resign as a councillor

10

Peter Besseling following the May council meeting to make way for his bid for mayor. Cr Turner’s rationale for resigning as a councillor to run for mayor was so that in the event of him actually being elected as mayor, a further by-election wouldn’t be called when he vacates a councillors’ chair. A councillor cannot hold both the position of mayor and councillor concurrently, even though a mayor is technically still a councillor. To the untrained eye, you could be forgiven for thinking that this is a very thoughtful strategy for mayoral hopeful Turner. For the sceptic or political strategists amongst the audience, this is sure-fire way for Cr Turner to make a strategic exit from council should he be unsuccessful as a mayoral candidate. An additional layer of consideration here is that Cr Turner was campaign support for both Peter Besseling, Rob Oakeshott and has always been a staunch supporter of Besseling’s political moves for around a decade or more. You could say that Rob Turner and Peter Besseling are ‘two peas in a pod’ in a lot of respects with very similar political views, predominantly left-leaning and in most cases voted in-sync with each other on major decisions of council, in my observations. It’s certainly no fluke that Cr Turner’s ‘welltimed’ mayoral candidacy announcement was timed to perfection to no doubt maximise his election chances. One wonders how long these two have been planning this little play. Unfortunately for both gentleman, the Besseling brand has been on the slide in public

opinion of late so it will be an interesting campaign for Turner. Among a few other things Rob pledges to ensure that council, under his stewardship, will be ‘business as usual’. For me, this ‘business as usual’ approach is the most troubling part of this whole scenario and should also be a huge concern for the broader community. Business as usual in my opinion will no doubt continue to cost the community millions and set us back more years and add to the current ‘do as little as possible’ approach to major projects and infrastructure delivery in the local area. Cr Turner ran on a Besseling Group for the last Council election with a large part of that campaign ‘talking up’ the achievements of the last Council term. Which mind you, included roughly a 50 per cent under-delivery of promised capital works or infrastructure. The Besseling-Turner alliance also promised the community they’d say no to hefty rate rises but have already proven to support rate rises within months of being re-elected. With two positions on Council now up for re-election, the community has a massive opportunity to disassemble the current controlling bloc and vote in two new candidates who can genuinely provide community representation and different perspectives to major issues up for debate. I do understand that there are a number of potential candidates that are strongly considering running for mayor. My vote would certainly be going to a candidate who wants to bring in a fresh approach, and certainly not a ‘business as usual’ mindset or forward plan.

Volunteer Week - May 8-14

Two million volunteers Lifeline sends out NATIONAL Volunteer Week throws the spotlight onto the two million-plus people in NSW who volunteer and also starts the search for the 2017 NSW Volunteer of the Year. Last year more than 100,000 people were recognised for their volunteering efforts in the Volunteer of the Year Awards and this year The Centre for Volunteering looks forward to receiving more nominations from grateful communities, organisations and individuals. Nominations for Volunteer of the Year can be made online at www.volunteering.com.au. Gemma Rygate, the CEO of The Centre for Volunteering, said: “Supporting volunteers is in our national interest. Volunteers contribute an estimated $290 billion to the Australian economy – that’s more than the mining sector, bigger than tourism. “Volunteering has much more than an economic value. Volunteers build social resilience and bring kindness and empathy into our increasingly complex communities.” Volunteers grow capacity: Dr David Digges, the 2016 NSW Volunteer of the Year, not only provides pro bono dental services to those in need, he also established the National Dental Foundation so other dentists can more easily volunteer their skills. Volunteers build communities: Like Narrandra’s Gayle Murphy, a primary school teacher who chairs her Local Health Advisory Committee which provides the link between the health service and the local community. That is not the limit of Gayle’s volunteering – she also helps care for two Narrandra icons - its koala colony and the Tiger Moth biplane, housed in the local Tiger Moth Museum. David and Gayle’s stories are just two of the “I volunteer because ...” profiles

the Centre for Volunteering will feature throughout National Volunteer Week. You can find other inspiring volunteering stories and photos at The Centre for Volunteering’s website: www.volunteering. com.au National Volunteer Week is also a chance to highlight community concerns regarding Federal Government changes to the Community Grants program that will destabalise funding to the organisations that nurture and promote volunteering – the volunteering support services. Volunteering Support Services source, place, train and manage volunteers to ensure their work is effective, professional and safe. The loss of this funding stream threatens the ongoing viability of many volunteering support services and in turn will weaken volunteering. “I urge everyone who appreciates what volunteers bring to our lives to sign the petition to restore direct funding to Volunteering Support Services,” Ms Rygate said. The Centre for Volunteering is the peak body in NSW which promotes and supports volunteering and community participation. The Centre is a not-for-profit organisation with 40 years of history. The Centre for Volunteering connects people and organisations to strengthen the community. It represents the two million volunteers and more than 2000 volunteering involving organisations across NSW. The Centre also works with key government and corporate organisations on Corporate Social Responsibility and employee volunteering programs.

a message of hope

WITH more than 10,000 Telephone Crisis Supporters giving their time over the past five years, Lifeline is this week celebrating National Volunteer Week by acknowledging the kindhearted work of its volunteers – past and present – based in communities across Australia. Lifeline Australia CEO Pete Shmigel said the week was an important time for the national charity to thank its volunteers, promote a wholeof-community response to suicide and send a message of hope to those struggling with life’s challenges. “With about a million interactions across our 13 11 14 crisis line and online Crisis Support Chat service last year, we know better than most the extent of Australia’s national suicide emergency,” Mr Shmigel said. “However, we also see daily reminders of the strength and resilience that exists within individuals and within communities; our 3000 active Crisis Supporters seek to draw out these attributes in every contact. “And while it’s not an easy job, we know our volunteers – beyond their service with Lifeline – take away lifelong skills that support their workplaces, families, friendship groups and even whole communities.” Mr Shmigel also acknowledged the thousands of other volunteers that support Lifeline’s vision of an Australia free of suicide in their own way. “Whether you’re a book sorter, truck driver, or retail shop staff member, you play a crucial role in ensuring we have the resources to be there for Australians when they’re struggling or having thoughts of suicide,” Mr Shmigel said. Other key Lifeline volunteer facts and

numbers include: • Between 2012-16, Lifeline’s Telephone Crisis Supporters (TCS) provided about 89 years of crisis support to Australians • About 50 individual TCSs have done at least one shift every month for the past five years • Lifeline’s Crisis Supporters come from all backgrounds and professions, including lawyers, journalists, teachers and even TV personalities • Crisis Supporters have been trained in every State and Territory, with most located in NSW (43%), Qld (18%) and Vic (16%) National Volunteer Week (8-14 May) is an annual campaign from Volunteering Australia to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s six million volunteers. For 24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention services, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or visit www.lifeline.org.au/gethelp

Volunteer Week - May 8-14 ‘Meals’ turns 50

Tacking Point Lions Club with the trailer used to raise money for local charities and community groups

Grants a big boost for workers IN my years representing the electorate of Cowper, many things have changed, but one thing has remained remarkably constant - the incredible commitment and dedication of our region’s volunteers. From the men and women of the State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, and Volunteer Marine Rescue who put their lives on the line to keep us safe, to the WIRES rescuers who look after injured wildlife, and all manner of organisations in between, we are blessed to be served by so many selfless volunteers. The Australian Government recognises the

vital role of volunteers in our communities with a number of important initiatives, including support for Volunteering Australia and National Volunteer Week. We’re also backing the hard work of local volunteers through the Volunteer Grants program. I was very pleased to announce last week that 40 wonderful local volunteer groups will share more than $130,000 in funding under the latest round of the program. The funding will support local groups like the Tacking Point Lions Club, which was awarded $4,485 to help restore a trailer that will

be used to raise money for local charities and community groups. I’ve worked with Tacking Point Lions on other projects, and I cannot imagine a more worthy recipient for this funding. I have no doubt they will put the refurbished trailer to great use in the service of our community. On behalf of the Australian Government, thank you to every community volunteer for the extraordinary contribution you make to our society!

MEALS on Wheels Port Macquarie have just celebrated 50 years of service. The not-for-profit organisation has been delivering nutritionally balanced meals to people in the local area for 50 years. Age and disability often reduces people’s ability to get out and about, and so Meals on Wheels has made it possible for people to stay in their homes where they are happiest, and can maintain independence. The Port Macquarie branch officially commenced operations on April 3, 1967. However, what stands out the most from this organisation is its volunteers and their connection with clients. “It’s very much a food delivery but it’s also making sure that our clients have that contact with people in the community,” said Kara Nicholson
Community Liaison Officer from Omnicare. “Our area is an ageing demographic, so you could definitely assume we have a need for this service and its volunteers.” National Volunteer Week takes place from May 8–14 and it celebrates the generous contribution of volunteers across Australia, like the ones from Meals on Wheels. In the course of a year, over 14.8 million meals are delivered by more than 78,700 volunteers to about 53,000 recipients Australia-wide in cities, regional and rural areas. Of these, about 4.5 million meals are delivered by 35,000 volunteers in NSW each year. “A lot of our clients are living alone,” said Kara. “It’s an opportunity for the person delivering the meals to come in and have a chat with them and make sure they are okay, just being a friend. So it’s that social inclusion, sitting down and talking to our clients, and making them feel a part of a community as well.” For more information about Meals on Wheels visit http://nswmealsonwheels.org.au

Uke concert and workshop

MUSIC lovers are in for a treat on Saturday May 13 when Newcastle duo Jack’n’Jel (aka Mark Jackson and Jane Jelbart) will have the Conservatorium’s Scout Hall premises in Hollingsworth Street ringing with fine harmonies and musical stories. They’ve performed at international and local folk and ukulele festivals, exploring the emotional canvas with the uke, guitar, banjo and a tiny trumpet, engaging and involving their audience in their own original songs and imaginative covers. “Their last visit to Port Macquarie in 2013 was a sell-out success,” says local ukulele teacher Ruth Allen, who describes them as ‘a relatively rare commodity - performers who can

Mark and Jane will also be offering a ukulele workshop prior to the concert. Using their Ukestration concept they guide uke players beyond ‘hum and strum’, dividing songs into parts so that players of all levels can participate and learn new skills and approaches to this popular instrument. The workshop, sponsored by the Mid North Coast Conservatorium of Music, kicks off at 4pm and the concert will start at 5.50pm. Tickets on sale at the door $25 (or $10 for the concert only).

New funding system will benefit students

ENSURING our children are well educated is one of the keys to helping them achieve their full potential. It’s the reason why many charities see education as the way to support children and families out of intergenerational poverty, and it’s why one of the United Nations’ eight Millennium Development Goals was “to achieve universal primary education”. In Australia, and throughout the western world, a good education is a sought-after commodity. Australian schools are among the best in the world, but despite ever-increasing funding, the relative performance of Aussie students is dropping. This trend must be stopped. That’s why the Prime Minister recently announced a major investment in Australian schools. The Government will invest an additional $18.6 billion in Australian schools over the next decade to create the genuine needsbased funding system envisaged by David Gonski. At present, Federal Government funding for schools is allocated according to 27 different special deals. This mish-mash of opaque funding arrangements has left some students to miss out on important extra funding simply because of the state they live in or the type of school in which they are studying. We’re scrapping these special deals, and introducing one consistent national funding system that will ensure

students get the assistance they need to reach their full potential, regardless of whether they live in Port Macquarie or Cape York. But funding by itself will not improve the performance of Australian schools. We also have a responsibility to ensure that funding is being used on evidence-based initiatives that are proven to boost student results. Mr Gonski, who led the review into school funding which established the importance of needs-based funding, has been asked to lead a second review, this time into how we can ensure that the additional funding can best be used to ensure that Australia’s youth are once again leading the world in academic achievement. This new funding investment, coupled with dedicated teachers and engaged parents, will ensure that Aussie students are reaching their potential.

ICONIC Aussie musician John Williamson back in the 1980s wrote about raising much-needed funds to save our furry little mate ‘Blinky Bill’ when he sang, “Oh pass the hat around between your friends, there’s no time to contemplate, maybe if we show some love , maybe it’s not too late.” Decades on and our local community is still proactive about raising money to support The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital to allow them to continue saving the lives of our precious koalas. The Koala Hospital opened its doors on Easter Saturday and played host so visitors and locals could experience firsthand the incredible work the staff and volunteers do to keep our koalas alive and well. Sausage were sizzling, there were competitions and magic shows and even a live charity auction, Port Macquarie called by Tony Dekker, Director of LJ Hooker, contributed to funds raised on the day. IPART has approved a new permanent special variation to replace an expiring special variation granted in 2012 to fund operating maintenance and capital improvements to the council’s road network. Dr Boxall said the decision means that Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s general income will increase in line with the 1.5% rate peg. “Based on the council’s application, we estimate in 2017-18, the average residential rate will increase by $17, average business rates will rise by $56 and farmland rates will go up by $28 on average,” Dr Boxall said. IPART has attached conditions to the approvals requiring the additional income to be used for the purposes outlined in the application, and that councils report to their communities about how the additional revenue is spent. Bellingen and Port Macquarie-Hastings councils are among 8 councils across NSW (of a total of 128) to make a special variation application to increase rates for 2017-18. IPART approved 4 applications in full, declined 2 applications and 2 applications were partially approved. The full reports on the councils’ applications are available on IPART’s website <http://www. ipart.nsw.gov.au>. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council - special variation summary Requested special variation - 5.39% single year increase to be retained permanently in the rate base to replace an expiring special variation. Approved in full. Increase in the average residential rate 201718 ($) - $17 Summary of purpose - Replace an expiring variation to continue funding operating maintenance and capital improvements to the council’s road network. Note: All percentages include the 1.5% rate peg applicable to all NSW councils in 2017-18, and the rate peg in subsequent years.

THE Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has approved applications from Bellingen Shire and Port MacquarieHastings councils to increase general income above the 1.5% rate peg from 1 July 2017. Bellingen Shire Council has received approval to permanently increase its general revenue by 6%, including the rate peg, to fund a sealed roads renewal program, reduce its infrastructure backlog and improve the council’s financial sustainability. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has had its application for a permanent increase of 5.39% approved, replacing an existing special variation expiring on June 30, 2017. The additional revenue, which includes the rate peg, will fund ongoing road network maintenance and renewal. IPART Chair Dr Peter Boxall said special variations are designed to give councils the flexibility to generate additional income above the rate peg to meet their specific needs, with an independent process to assess the increase. Applications are assessed by IPART against the NSW Government’s published criteria, with submissions received directly from stakeholders also considered. “In making these assessments, we have considered each council’s financial need for the additional revenue, its community consultation on the proposed changes and the capacity and willingness of ratepayers to pay the requested increase,” Dr Boxall said. “Although both communities were divided about the increases, the councils have demonstrated they have provided opportunity for input and considered the impact on ratepayers.” Through the rate peg and special variation process, IPART determines the allowable increases to councils’ general income. Councils decide how to allocate the increase among different ratepayer categories, such as residential, business, farmland and mining. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council:

Get ready for SWR festival By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

ENTRIES are now open for the South West Rocks Running Festival. The festival is in its 36th year and just keeps growing. “It’s been getting bigger and bigger every year,” said Tracy Walker, event secretary. “When people hear the word marathon, they think it’s too much, so we introduced the 5km to encourage people into the sport. It is now the most popular event.” The event also caters for the younger runners wanting to compete. “The kids event was started to try and encourage a healthy lifestyle and to get them interested in the event,” Tracy said. “It is just a fun run but they do get the finishers medal at the end, the same as the adults.” Tracy also says there’s some local talent to look out for. “A young lad, Finn Askew, from South West Rocks has been racing ever since we’d had the shorter races,” said Tracy. “He’s been doing those and he’s been doing quite well in the triathlon as well. “There’s also 10-year-old Ruby Trapel from South West Rocks. She’s another young one who will probably be entering. She will probably go in the 5km this year. “She’s been doing really well especially in triathlon in the kids events, she’s a little powerhouse. They’re both really competitive kids and both doing really well in whatever they do. Trent Morrow, the ‘Marathon Man’, competed last year and I think he will also be competing this year. So we’ve got a lot of talented athletes who have competed in this event.” The race course is along the scenic South West Rocks Road to Hat Heat Road returning

White shadow across the NRL JUST when you thought it was going to be a dull weekend! The Test was last Friday night. Then City v Country on Sunday. It was almost a case of putting the cue in the rack for a few days for league fans – not much to read here. Easy wins for the ‘Roos and, well, who really cared about the other one. But then across the weekend the big hits just kept coming out of left field. First JT is in the casualty room again, this time with a bung shoulder. Suddenly the Cows and Maroons are looking shaky. Not sure how long Thurston will be out, but one week is too long for NQ. Then the you-know-what hit the fan as a cocaine cloud descended again over the NRL. Firstly Cronulla chairman Damian Keogh was charged with possessing a prohibited drug. He has stood down. Then Kiwi Test players Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Proctor were also embroiled in a cocaine

scandal. The news was especially hard for the Gold Coast Titans. The club has fought hard off the field to prove they are a franchise worth following. On the field they have worked just as hard, proving they are a team with real heart. They battled through a horrendous injury toll, put two wins together and then get smashed by the Proctor incident. They are about to prove just how tough their player group really is. OK, we have had a week off from the NRL, so let’s tip some winners. Bulldogs v Cowboys (Thursday, May 11, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The first of several really tough ones this weekend. The Cows are without JT, but the Dogs are without Josh Reynolds. Of course, like all teams, they have had the week off – except for rep players. Cowboys were touched up by the Eels before the break while the Dogs overcame the Raiders.

BIG disappointment of 2017. But you just can’t believe they will not turn it all around soon. • Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Storm v Titans (Saturday, May 13, 5.30pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Number one v Number 12 as part of a double header at Suncorp stadium. Every reason why the Storm should win this one, but YLI just loves the way the Titans keep proving the doubters wrong. Both teams have players out. Sniff an upset. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Sea Eagles v Broncos (Saturday, May 13, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Second of the double-header at Suncorp. Both teams coming off a win. Broncs will be without Jimmy ‘The Jet’ Roberts, but have plenty of depth. Hard to go past the Broncos at home and considering they are now up in fourth. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Knights v Raiders (Sunday, May 14, 2pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle): Knights’ long season continues while the Raiders really need to string some wins together. Canberra are still back in 10th. They have lost some real close ones, but still lost. Knights are not far 11th – 14th May 2017 away from a big upset, but Raiders too Thursday 11th May, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium hungry to let it happen this weekend. Bulldogs vs Cowboys • Your Local Independent tips: Friday 12th May, 6pm, UOW Jubilee Oval Raiders Dragons vs Sharks Roosters v Eels (Sunday, May Friday 12th May, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium 14, 4pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Wests Tigers vs Rabbitohs Really good one to round off the Saturday 13th May, 3pm, Pepper Stadium weekend. The seventh-placed Eels are Panthers vs Warriors more consistent. Their last round win Saturday 13th May, 5.30pm, Suncorp Stadium over a weakened Cows showed they Storm vs Titans have plenty up their sleeve still. The Saturday 13th May, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium Roosters were pipped by the Warriors Sea Eagles vs Broncos Sunday 14th May, 2pm, McDonald Jones Stadium so will be really keen to get another Knights vs Raiders ‘w’. The pendulum swings to the Eels. Sunday 14th May, 4pm, Allianz Stadium • Your Local Independent tips: Roosters vs Eels Eels

Both teams on five wins – four losses, but Cows aren’t heading in the right direction. • Your Local Independent tips: Dogs. Dragons v Sharks (Friday, May 12, 6pm, UOW Jubilee Oval, Sydney): Just gets tougher. The Dragons have been in some really good form, but lose Josh Dugan. While the Sharks are near full strength. Both coming off last round losses. Let’s give Dragons another chance. • Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Tigers v Rabbitohs (Friday, May 12, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Tigers have Aaron Woods on the injury list, while the Rabbits are at full strength. Both teams on three wins six losses. Tigers could pull another surprise, but unlikely. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Panthers v Warriors (Saturday, May 13, 3pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): OK, so when do we turn the porch light off for the return of the real Panthers.
