Some local magic Chelsea makes formal wishes a cost reality

PORT Macquarie has its own Fairy Godmother who is waving her magic wand and making school formal wishes come true. A little younger and less cartoon-like, 17-yearold Chelsea Connell, who attends Heritage Christian School in Port Macquarie, saw far too many girls struggling to make it to their formal. “In my old town I saw some girls who struggled to afford dresses for their semi formals in year 10,” said Chelsea. “They were buying their dresses at places like Best&Less and you could see on the night they weren’t always happy to be in photos as other girls were, they were embarrassed. “When I came to Port Macquarie I noticed that it had a low socio-economic status in certain places, as well as along the Mid North Coast, and I was thinking, I would hate for anyone to not go to their formal because they can’t afford a dress.” It was then that Chelsea started a Facebook page called ‘Cinderella’s Gift’ and just one month into it, Chelsea has already received 100 dresses that women and girls around the Mid North coast and beyond have donated.

“Formal dresses can be very expensive,” Chelsea explained. “The cheaper dresses can cost $250, mid range dresses cost around $600 and then some girls are spending up to $1500 for designer formal dresses. “Girls are definitely feeling pressured to spend a lot of money on formal dresses, especially when they’ve got friends who may not know their financial situation and are going on about how they are going to spend $900 on a dress, and these girls are looking at dresses thinking ‘can I get this dress on sale? How can I afford it’?” Chelsea says formal season is not only affecting the girls attending the formal, but also their families. “It can cause a lot of problems as well with family dynamics because some parents feel the pressure because they’ve seen their child work so hard in year 12, but then those formal dresses can break the bank,” she says. “Because it’s not just the dress, it’s the hair and the makeup and some schools actually charge the parents to go to formal, so it’s all those other expenses on top of the dress. • Continued Page 6

Locals say three easy steps will save lives By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
Our team for Riding for the Disabled Kempsey-Macleay Centre, Aiden Hodges, Ruth Harradine, Cheryll Beard, Kaylea Moulds, Talicia Armitage, Emily Wright, Victor Rudder, Jacoba Rudder, Tracy Davis and Emily Davis did the valley proud at the 2018 Sydney Royal Easter Show.
Riding show success Podium for all competitors
By SUE PATERICK ONCE again the Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Kempsey-Macleay Centre has shone brightly at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show with all seven riders coming home with a placing. Our team for 2018 was Emily Davis, Kaylea Moulds, Jacoba Rudder, Aiden Hodges, Talicia Armitage, Ruth Harradine and Emily Wright. All the riders and horses performed well, but for Kaylea attaining fifth place in her first competition ride was an amazing achievement. The team of seven riders, three horses and three coaches also entered and won the Best Presented Team and deserve a round of applause. These riders qualified to compete through the Regional Mounted Games held in September 2017. According to Secretary Pauline Harrison, the Kempsey-Macleay Centre first competed at the Royal Easter Show seven years ago with just two riders and has never looked back. “So having seven excited riders make the trip down this year is a testament to the skill and dedication of our coaches, riders and all those who volunteer each week,” she said.
“Riding for the Disabled (RDA) has grown in every way from its early beginnings when pony rides were found to be helpful for children who had polio. “At RDA they say ‘it’s what you can do that counts’ and the activities are good for children and adults with all kinds of disabilities.” Pauline also stressed how beneficial the sheer joy of being around a horse was, not to mention being involved in a fun activity and the comfort of confidence it gives. “The physical benefits are also enormous because the movement of the horse is perfect as a gentle activity to help relax and strengthen core muscles,” she added. There are currently vacancies on the waiting list for RDA riding lessons, which are held every Tuesday in a school term at the Kempsey Showgrounds. Each person is given a 30-minute ride, most are led, some need two side-walkers, while some need to be held completely. A few of the more experienced participants can now ride alone and a few are able to trot. President Marie Purkis said the riders feel very proud of themselves. “Riding gives them a feeling of control because they are up on something high,” she said.
“Most of the participants have never been able to compete in individual or team sports, but they can do this on their own.” She also believes that the movement and warmth of a horse is very therapeutic, and sees the group having a great time socialising with each other and the horses. “We’ve seen children start talking who have never spoken before,” Marie said. “So everyone gets very excited about Tuesday, it’s something we all look forward to.” Riding for the Disabled began in the Macleay Valley in 2005 with the core belief that riding horses develops abilities. It is a voluntary organisation that receives no funding and relies on a lot of support from local community groups. To help raise funds the RDA Centre also holds raffles and a regular sausage sizzle at Bunnings. Like most volunteer organisations, the Centre could use a few more volunteers but you don’t necessarily need experience with horses. For more information on becoming a volunteer or to take part in Kempsey’s Riding for the Disabled then contact Marie on 6562 5708.

LOCAL residents are urging a ‘three-step solution’ for increased safety at the popular Shelly Beach in Port Macquarie. Retiree Jay Corr, who has assisted in numerous rescues at the beach, says many life-endangering situations could be avoided completely. He has spoken with many locals who use Shelly Beach and says the ‘three-step solution’ would be a giant leap towards keeping everyone safe. “The first thing people should be doing is educating themselves,” said Jay. “They can easily go online onto Google or Surf Life Saving Australia and learn how to read currents and rips in the water. “The second thing is that there needs to be three signs put up at Shelly Beach to warn people of the rips. These signs should be placed at the bottom of the three stairways that lead to Shelly Beach Lagoon, saying ‘Beware dangerous rips in front of lagoon’. “Thirdly, don’t go out too far. There’s a point of rocks two thirds out at the lagoon and people should avoid going past them. “And of course, if you do get into a difficult situation - put your hand up, don’t panic, and float.” Recently, a 60-year-old man drowned at Oxley Beach in Port Macquarie, near Shelly Beach. It’s incidents like this that the community is hoping can be avoided by the above three steps. “Shelly Beach is very safe,” Jay said. “Lots of families go there. It’s got a barbecue area and it’s a great place to spend the weekends. However, I don’t want to see these incidents anymore. “Out on the lagoon there are different rips that run at low tide, medium tide, and high tide,” explained Jay. “People need to know that there’s not just one rip going out in the water, there’s a side rip that comes in too and people don’t know that and they try and swim against it. “People just really need to educate themselves and take the necessary precautions. No one wants to read or hear about another incident in the water. It can be avoided.” For more information on rips and currents visit: www.surflifesaving.com.au/rip-currents

Support for coal power
I AGREE with the government’s push to build a new reliable coal-fired power plant in NSW. The AGL spin to let the market work is simply to protect their own financial interest at the expense of NSW customers. They have had over 30 years to let the market work, but all that it has produced is less reliable, more expensive energy. As a previous executive engineer involved in the development and initial operation of the electricity market I see that the market is broken and in the control of companies who have vested interests based on their own profits. For your information 100MW of coal generation is far superior to 100MW of renewable energy. To be of the same value because of the variability of wind and solar the renewable generation requires 300% more MW’s and batteries to supply similar levels of MWh (total energy over a 24 hour period) to be equivalent to a coal-fired power plant. While AGL can dominate the market they can reap more profits from customers who can least afford to purchase their energy. The suggestion that a coal-fired plant is more expensive is simply spin since its whole-of-life capital cost is less than 25% of renewable generation. The electricity market has been corrupted by the renewable energy lobby groups since it is not
a fair market for thermal and renewable energy producers. I have worked in both sectors and I am aware that the original market rules to protect customers from price rises and to ensure reliable and secure supply have been rewritten to favour renewable over thermal power production. Snowy 2 is an example of incorrect use of Government funds in order to provide reliable power to other than the ACT. I am fully aware of the problems in South Australia with the excess of renewable energy accepted by the previous Labor Government. We do not want to see NSW fall into the same problems. A new coal-fired power plant takes several years to plan and build. We do not wish to see power restrictions force short term unreliable high cost solutions. To overcome the energy problems the Government must restore centrally planned and approved power generation rather than market driven ad hock generation and introduce regulated rather than market-driven power prices. Regulated power prices take away the pressure to shop around for energy and ensures fair and least cost pricing and supply of energy and transmission/distribution costs to customers. Globally, old mate Trump is throwing the best tantrums ever displayed in the public arena by a grown man. Imagine if you or I behaved like The Don? Simply put? Anyone else would have been taken away in a straight jacket by now. It seems finally we’ve collectively realised that what happens in Trump’s crazy world is now impacting Australia. This week a LIFE AFTER TRUMP TAX debate is being held by the Melbourne Economic Forum in partnership with Victoria University and The Melbourne University, to debate how the Trump tax plan will change the tax equation in Australia, as a direct result of President Trump’s tax plan, which has radically changed the US corporate tax system. I remember writing a column about the global impact of Trump becoming POTUS (President of the United States) when he first nominated and got shot down, big time. I’m not saying I told you so, but, I hope y’all are enjoying the asylum! Nationally, we’ve gone from the disgrace of ball tampering (a daily occurrence for any men I’ve known) to calls for Malcolm to consider stepping aside for a new leader due to the last 30 polls. Peter Dutton – God help us – have both made it known they have leadership aspirations. Andrew Peacock has put his two cents in and John Hewson has possibly made the only sensible statement of all – saying Malcolm’s position was “reasonably secure” because of the lack of any “obvious heir apparent” before finishing off with – “he looks like a leader, he sounds like a leader, he’s just not leading”. For the second time in the space of a week, (there’s a first time for everything) I totally agree with John Hewson – we need a leader with some balls! We also need a leader who is not a radical, left or right. We need a leader who makes decisions based on the best outcome for the whole community, not just the elite and entitled few! Malcolm is never going to achieve that, because he is one of the elite and entitled – he will never successfully represent the majority of the people, because he doesn’t understand people at a grass roots level. In a nutshell, I think it is time for the asylum to take back the control from the lunatics!

New mail box to promote a love of reading If you pick up a book and start reading “from an early age it will follow through
“
your entire life
By SUE PATERICK TO promote literacy and a love of reading in the Macleay Valley, Kempsey Children’s Services are today (Thursday April 12) launching a Community Mail Box Library at 10.30am. Kempsey Children’s Services provide quality early learning programs and believe creating a love of books throughout the community is important. The Community Mail Box Library has been erected outside 6 Austral Street and community members are invited to leave a pre-loved book and take another one home to curl up with. No one has to pay or leave any details they just need to love reading books. Once read, books can be returned to the Community Mail Box Library so someone else can enjoy it too, and the community is asked to donate books they no longer need. Community Officer for Kempsey Children’s Services, Jane Walsh, is enthusiastic about the idea of a community library because it will promote the joy of reading. “If you pick up a book and start reading
from an early age it will follow through your entire life,” Jane said. Even though the Service caters for young children, Jane said donated books could be suitable for any age group from nought to 90. She did stress that the books should be of good reading material for whatever age. A staff member from Kempsey Children’s Services will check the mail box daily. To donate books just pop them into the mail box or if it is full leave your books at the office at 8 Austral Street. There is no time limit because the Community Mail Box Library is expected to be open for business indefinitely. As actor in a Game of Thrones, Jojen Reed, apparently said: “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, the man who never reads lives only one.” Pictured: Jane Walsh, Community Officer from Kempsey Children’s Services, with the new Community Mail Box Library the Service launched today (April 12) to promote literacy and reading.
Timely reminder of local wreck By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC A UNIQUE piece of local history is unraveling at the Port Macquarie Library. An exhibition presented by the Australian National Maritime Museum - ‘Submerged Stories of Australia’s Shipwrecks’ – is proving very popular. “A total of 19 ships were lost in World War II on the NSW Coast to submarine attacks and of course this wasn’t released to the general public in war years,” said Ted Kasehagen, Coordinator at the Mid North Coast Maritime Museum. “The government didn’t want people to panic that there were so many submarines on the NSW Coast. Of course people heard about the submarines in Sydney Harbour, but there were 19 ships lost to Japanese submarines that many people still don’t know about.” The exhibition at the Port Macquarie library, which runs through until April 30, features a local shipwreck – the Wollongbar (II) - which was carrying cargo during World War II when it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on April 29, 1943, and sunk off Point Plomber,16km north of Port Macquarie. A total of 32 people aboard the ship perished. The Wollongbar (II) was carrying produce including thousands of butter boxes and bacon, which the locals took advantage of when they were washed up, making cakes and biscuits several days later. The Mid North Coast Maritime Museum has a dedicated permanent Wollongbar (II) room with memorabilia and further details of the tragedy. “The exhibition at the library highlights about 16 shipwrecks, including the Wollongbar (II) and people will be able to come in and read the banners that display information about these shipwrecks,” said Ted. “We will also be having a free entry day at
Pictured at the opening of the exhibition at the Port Macquarie Library are, from left, Mid North Coast Maritime Museum committee member Ted Kasehagen, Mayor Peta Pinson, Museum president Jan Howison, museum committee member Keith Chambers, and State Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams. the Maritime Museum on April 29 as it marks 75 years since the sinking of the Wollongbar (II).” Ted says that shipwrecks play a pivotal role in Australia’s history. “These days you’re not allowed to dive on the Wollongbar (II), but there are some expeditions that see divers go into different wrecks all around Australia and the world and they find a lot of artifacts that are laying in sand or embedded in coral, and that gives us a great insight into those time periods,” he explains.
“The Mid North Coast has some great stories of shipwrecks going back into the late 1800s, particularly between Taree and Kempsey. “One example of another Australian shipwreck was in 1975 when a bulk ore carrier struck the Tasman Bridge in Hobart, Tasmania. It took out two pylons and 127 metres of bridge decking and all the roadways collapsed and about 5 cars went down into the river. There was loss of life from people in those cars and also among the crew on the ore carrier.
“Many shipwrecks occurred because of storms, which resulted in the ships hitting reefs.” Don’t miss out on the exciting exhibition until April 30 ‘Submerged – Stories of Australia’s Shipwrecks’ at the Port Macquarie Library, Corner of Gordon and Grant Street, Port Macquarie. Entry is free. For more information about the Mid North Coast Maritime Museum, 6 William St, Port Macquarie, visit www. maritimemuseumcottages.org.au

Formal ‘fairy’ Chelsea Connell
Chelsea cuts formal costs Billy Axford plays Conrad Birdie in the Players Theatre’s latest production, Bye Bye Birdie
New look for old classic By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE Players Theatre is bringing a fresh new look to a musical classic. Many people may be familiar with the hit 1961 musical ‘Bye Bye Birdie’, inspired by Elvis Presley being drafted into the army in 1957. Now, local director Daniel Parlevliet is bringing this stage phenomenon back to life, but with a fresh new face. “I’m taking a bit of a different approach with this production,” Daniel said. “With this version I’m taking a modern pop star look to the character originally played by Elvis. “So he won’t look like Elvis at all like most other Bye Bye Birdie musicals do. I’m just giving it a fresh look. “I’m also going minimalistic with the actual set pieces and really letting the singing and dancing take the main action.” This will be Daniel’s second production for the Players Theatre in Port Macquarie after his success with ‘The Producers’. “This production is going very well. I actually think we are ahead with our rehearsals, so it’s all running very smoothly and we are ready for opening night,” Daniel said. This musical comedy follows the character of rock star Conrad Birdie (played by Billy Axford) and his devastated fans, and particularly struggling songwriter Albert Paterson, whose song Birdie was just about to record. Rosie, Albert’s girlfriend and secretary, pushes Albert to write a new tune that Birdie will perform on television to a fan selected in contest – Kim McAfee, played by Emily
Albert Peterson (played by Ian Castle) and Rose Alvarez (Amanda Gordon)
Director Daniel Parlevliet
Holley. The Players Theatre is delighted to see the return of Ian Castle, who plays Albert Peterson, opposite Amanda Gordon who takes on the role of Rose Alvarez. “Ian was a prominent performer for many years for The Players,” said Daniel. “The last show he did with us was ‘Boy from Oz’ a few years ago. He hasn’t been on stage for us since then. “Amanda and Ian used to be our leading actors in a lot of the shows together, so it will be great to have them and their talents back on stage together. Ian said he is very excited to be back on stage.” Bye Bye Birdie is a production to be enjoyed by the whole family.
“The audience will most likely recognise the songs ‘Put On A Happy Face’ and ‘A Lot of Livin’ to Do’ because Bobby Rydell did a cover of them after he was in the movie,” Daniel said. “The audience can expect a great night of entertainment with some great local talent.” Bye Bye Birdie will be hitting the stage on Friday, April 13, right through until April 29. Come and see the musical comedy on Fridays and Saturdays from 8pm-10.30pm or on Saturday’s and Sunday’s from 2pm-4.30pm at the Players Theatre, 33 Lord Street, Port Macquarie. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the door and online through the Players Theatre Inc website at playerstheatre.org.au or through the Glasshouse on 02 6581 8888.
• From Page 1 “I recently read somewhere online that Australian formals on average cost $1,500 and that’s what really got me thinking. Not everyone has $1,500 lying around for a dress, shoes, makeup etc.” ‘Cinderella’s Gift’ is all about making girls feel special on their big night. “I’ve heard of people who haven’t been able to go to their formal because of the cost. Nobody should have to miss out on one of the biggest nights of their high school years because of the cost,” Chelsea said. “I’m here to help any girls from around the Mid North Coast needing a dress. My house is already so full with over 100 dresses that have been kindly donated. I even had some ladies from Dubbo who contacted me and donated dresses. “I’ve had offers from guys to donate suits, so maybe one day in the future I would help guys too, but at this stage I will do at least a year just for girls formal dresses.” Chelsea will be attending her own formal in November after she finishes her HSC. She intends on starting university in 2019 in either a Bachelor of Law, teaching, or social work. For anyone who would like a formal dress for their school formal, simply get in contact with Chelsea via her Facebook Page Cinderella’s Gift, her email cinderellasgift@ gmail.com, her mobile - 0448 713 881 - or even through the school counsellor who can get in touch with Chelsea. “The formal season hasn’t started yet but soon I’m going to do open days with appointments where the girls can come in one at a time, or with their friend if they like, and they can look through the racks of dresses,” Chelsea explained. “I’m planning on staying in Port Macquarie and doing university here at this stage, so I’d love to keep ‘Cinderella’s Gift’ going, and if I couldn’t for some reason, I would pass it onto someone else so that girls here can continue to have this service.”
FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson What a huge month April is already proving to be, it really does have a festival feel, and with the perfect weather who wouldn’t want to be out and about enjoying everything our region has to offer. You may have noticed an increase in visitors, with the Queensland school holidays underway, and our local kids taking a well-earned break from next week. There is so much to do in what we’re calling Festival Month, and I really encourage you all to embrace the opportunity, get together a group of friends and experience something new. In the last week I’ve had the pleasure of attending the Wauchope Show, which is without doubt one of the best regional shows, and a real showcase of everything our hinterland and rural areas have to offer. But perhaps the
pmhc.nsw.gov.au
best part of the show was seeing our community connected and having a lot of fun.
Macaquarie CBD will come alive in a vibrant extravaganza of light, colour and everything creative.
The Seniors Expo at Port Panthers on Monday was also a real buzz, and I really enjoyed mixing and chatting with as many of you as I could. Enjoying a taste of Meals on Wheels and trying out the virtual reality glasses were real highlights for me, and the enthusiasm and spirit at the Expo was certainly contagious.
I’m also really looking forward to the first ever Wauchope Creative Festival, bursting to life on Saturday 21 April.
Coming up we’ve got Youth Week, where our young people will come together and celebrate Unity through Diversity, with an innovative and fun range of activities being put together for everyone to enjoy. Our Heritage Festival is always a great way to reconnect with our past, with a range of interesting and entertaining tours, celebrations and presentations taking place from mid April until mid May. And don’t forget Artwalk on Thursday 19 April, where the Port
The family favourite Moonlight Movies are also screening in Bonny Hills, Wauchope and Port Macquarie during the last week of April … don’t forget the popcorn! WOW … with so much to see and do during Festival Month I’m already exhausted! So join me, let’s get out and about and make the most of living in the best place in the world. Until next week, Peta. Choir is a shining example of ‘belonging’ LAST weekend saw the 2nd Anniversary Fundraising Concert for the School of Hard Knocks, Port Macquarie Hastings, Absolutely Everybody Choir and as I looked around the audience and saw the joy on the faces of the choir members and volunteers, the enormity of what it is that we have created hit home. We have, through this and other important programs for the marginalised and vulnerable, created a ‘Community of Belonging’ - a safe place, a purpose, an opportunity to reconnect with life, a gentle ‘re-entry’ for many after life’s challenges. Wider community support for our mainstream programs allows us to continue to support programs that enrich lives. This is what we community colleges do. This is what makes us unique and gives us a special role to play in the lives of the people we serve. We occupy the space somewhere between the rock and the hard place that people sometimes find themselves in, where they need assistance, a new start, a resting place or just a hand up. Sometimes, and I think I speak for the college staff when I say this, we fail to look up long enough from the day to day work we are doing to see the beautiful fruits of our labours in the difference that we are making in people’s lives. Communities of Belonging such as this beautiful Choir; such as Nautilus, our high school for disengaged young people who need to find a new way to learn; such as The MakerSpace, which supports people who need access to hands-on learning in order to find a new path. Our dream is to continue to create them and you can help.
Sport facilities receive a boost MAJOR Upgrades To Local Sporting and Community Facilities: Almost $690,000 will be spent improving local sporting and community facilities in the Port Macquarie area. The NSW Government is funding these projects as part of the Stronger Country Communities fund. I am pleased to announce that $237,640 has been granted for the installation of sports field lighting to the hockey fields in Port Macquarie. An additional $19,580 is also being provided for automated lighting systems at two additional sports fields. $186,973 is being spent on a new training field and lighting at the Port Macquarie Regional Sports Stadium. The new training field will benefit a number of rugby league clubs as well as touch football and other major events. These sporting facilities are extremely well used by hundreds of people each week so any improvements will greatly benefit multiple sporting groups. $255,030 has also been allocated to construct new public toilets in the Short Street Carpark in Port Macquarie. The new facility will include an accessible toilet and ambulant toilets. These new toilets will be self-cleaning and will be the first public amenity of this type in the area. The new amenities will be located closer to

Short Street to improve accessibility. The old amenities will be demolished when the new facility is commissioned. Funding for this important infrastructure is through the Stronger Country Communities Fund. Upgrading Spencers Cutting: Early work has started on the Oxley Highway upgrade at Spencers Cutting, paving the way for major work to start soon on the $25 million project. This exciting project is part of the NSW Government’s $50 million commitment to improve safety and traffic efficiency on the Oxley Highway. There are about 13,000 traffic movements daily on the Oxley Highway between Wauchope and Port Macquarie. The Hastings is a recognised growth area with traffic volumes expected to significantly increase in the next 10 years.

THE deadline to apply for the Coalition Government’s highly anticipated Regional Growth Fund is fast approaching and we are calling for applicants to get cracking with only one month remaining to submit Initial Applications. The $272 million Regional Growth Fund would support major projects in regional, rural and remote areas that delivered longterm economic benefits. For communities like ours, outside the major capital cities, this is a unique opportunity to ‘think big’ on new or expanded projects, with 50 percent of project funding on offer as part of the Coalition Government’s focus on regional jobs. The Regional Growth Fund will support additional investment for sustainable economic growth, including from the private sector, other levels of government, and notfor-profit organisations. Initial Applications will close on April 27 and all eligible organisations are being encouraged to submit an application as soon as possible. For more information on the program, including the application process, visit www. grants.gov.au
Origins of an unofficial anthem MATILDA went waltzing a long time ago and Australia has never been the same since. I was watching television recently when the song Waltzing Matilda came on. Some people have said it should be the national anthem, but would you stand to attention while somebody sang a song about a man who committed suicide? Anyway. Matilda has a lot of meanings, including a woman’s Christian name, but I was more interested in Waltzing Matilda. Waltzing Matilda is Australia’s best-known bush ballad, based on an old Scottish ballad and has been described as the country’s unofficial national anthem. The title was Australian slang for travelling on foot, waltzing, derived from the German auf der Walz with one’s belongings in a matilda (swag) slung over one’s back. Susan Butler says Mathilde was a common name for a girlfriend in Germany. The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker, or “swagman”, making a drink of tea at a bush camp and capturing a stray jumbuck (sheep) to eat. When the jumbuck’s owner, a squatter (wealthy landowner), and three mounted policemen pursue the swagman for theft, he declares “you’ll never take me alive” and commits suicide by drowning himself in a nearby billabong, after which his ghost haunts the site.

LAURIE BARBER
The Macquarie says to waltz Matilda was to wander about as a tramp with a swag. The German meant to move in a circular fashion, as apprentices moving from master to master. The original lyrics to the song were written in 1895 by Banjo Paterson and were first published as sheet music in 1903. The Macquarie says Waltzing Matilda was first sung in public at Winton in 1895, The book Singer of the Bush, page 250, starts “Oh, there once was a swagman camped in the billabongs”. But the original manuscript. published on the next page, says “billabong”. And he crossed out what seems to be a few words, one of which is Australia, and he inserted Waltzing Matilda. Crooked Mick in the Dinkum Aussie Dictionary says: “Almost everyone in the civilised world believes it is the Australian national anthem. Quite a few Australians think so as well.”
In 2008 the National Film and Sound Archive said there were more recordings of Waltzing Matilda than any other Australian song. My big dictionary says to walk or waltz Matilda means to carry one’s swag or to travel the road. John “Nino” O’Grady says Waltzing Matilda means wandering around the country with all your possessions on your back looking for work “and hoping you won’t find it”. He goes on to say “young professional Australians” visiting other countries like to sing it because “it makes them feel superior”. GA Wilkes says the matilda might have been blue and it was sometimes called a shiralee or a duncan “for reasons unknown to me”. Bill Hornage says jumbuck has been kept alive only because it is in Waltzing Matilda. The Macquarie dictionary says Matilda was the daughter of Henry 1 of England and then it goes on to say matilda is “colloquial a swag”. But as Henry Lawson said: “A swag is not generally referred to as a bluey or matilda. It is called a swag.” The Bulletin, and I believe it was written by Henry Lawson, for it is in the same year, he says: “No bushmen thinks of going on a wallaby or walking matilda. He goes on the track.” lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com

SMSF’s – Capital Gains Tax Relief – Time is Running Out
The Lost Plot Community Garden is about to celebrate its fourth birthday
Garden celebrating its fourth birthday By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
COME and see why so many locals are spending their spare time at The Lost Plot Community Garden. Port Macqaurie’s very own community garden is celebrating its fourth birthday with a community picnic, pizza competition, children’s games, quizzes, and gardening workshops. “The garden has grown in popularity over the last four years and the membership has grown from a handful of volunteers to more than 130 members,” said Stephanie Baker, media officer for The Lost Plot Community Garden. “There are often mothers with small children at the working bee held at the garden on Thursday mornings and we have a small raised garden where the children can plant and water their veggies.” The birthday celebration will take place on Saturday, April 21, from 11am and people are encouraged to bring a picnic and relax amongst the veggies and flowerbeds. The kids will be entertained with gardening workshops, games, treasure hunts, garden knowledge quizzes, and a pizza competition. This event is a great opportunity to show off all the hard work the volunteers have put into the community garden and to showcase exactly why it has become so popular over the past four years. “All community members are encouraged to visit the garden,” said Stephanie. “There are two working bees a week, on Thursday and Saturday mornings. During these times, members are involved with planting veggies, maintaining and improving the garden and keeping an eye on the orchard. We all share morning tea and enjoy being in the garden. We encourage everyone who wants to actively get involved with garden activities to become a member. Members come from all walks of life and include people of all ages.” The community garden not only grows its own seasonal produce, but the volunteers also make their own compost and have quite a large composting facility. “We believe these areas are very important for towns and cities as it encourages people to learn about where their food comes from,” explained Stephanie. “It is also a great way to learn how to grow veggies. There are lots of people involved in the garden with so much knowledge to share. “Towns and cities are getting very built up these days, so it is so important to create these oases of greenery where people can retreat to. The garden is completely organic, providing
fresh healthy produce. The value of this cannot be underestimated.” The garden also regularly runs workshops on a range of sustainability topics, encouraging community members to learn about different ways to live more sustainably. This year’s topics have included a Bees Wax Wrap workshop and a Composting and Wormfarming workshop. With an annual membership, anyone can access the garden and its produce. “While the garden is accessible to anyone, we ask that people take out an annual membership if they wish to take produce from the garden,” Stephanie said. “The membership is $20 for a single person or $30 for a family. Produce is generally harvested at the working bees and shared amongst members attending. “We generally plant seasonal vegetables, so the garden is moving into its winter vegetable crop, including broccoli, spinach, snowpeas, garlic and more. We have recently extended the garden by starting a food forest in a previously un-used part of the site. We have a range of fruit trees, including bananas, citrus, finger limes, figs and other fruit such as kiwifruit, raspberries, passionfruit and melons.” There are currently 130 members of The Lost Plot Community Garden, and more volunteers are always encouraged. “The garden will always benefit from having more volunteers to assist with the upkeep of the garden, providing new ideas and generally being part of the gardening community,” said Stephanie. “A higher number of volunteers, particularly those available during working hours, may also enable us to provide greater opportunities to engage different age groups to the garden, for example youth and the elderly.” Don’t miss out on the birthday bash celebration on Saturday April 21 at The Lost Plot Community Garden, Central Road, Port Macquarie, from 11am. The pizza competition kicks off at 11.30 and includes a judging panel of local celebrity chefs. To enter email info@thelostplot.org.au Competitors will bring their own dough, toppings and creativity. Pizzas will be cooked in the wood-fired pizza oven provided. There is a $10 entry fee for the pizza competition, with all proceeds going towards the garden. There are also great prizes up for grabs. To find out more about this free community event, search Facebook @Port Macquarie Community Gardens or visit http://thelostplot. org The Lost Plot Community Garden was started from a State Government Grant given to council, which provided part of the garden infrastructure.
As part of the 2016 Federal Budget was legislation which forces anyone with more than $1.6 million of super in pension phase to either withdraw or move back into accumulation phase the excess. Further, Transition to Retirement Pensions (TTRP), also revert to the accumulation phase. This includes all pensions held, not just within your SMSF. So, from 1 July 2017 earnings on assets that have now reverted from Pension to the Accumulation Phase will become taxable. Members affected by these changes may be entitled to Transitional CGT relief because of the need to transfer assets out of retirement phase in the 2016/17 financial year to comply with legislative changes. To explain in a very broad nature, if you were receiving a TRIS and sold an asset that supported that pension in 2017 financial year, there would likely be no or minimal tax on the gain due to the Exempt Current Pension Income %. However post 1 July if you sold that same asset and made a capital gain whilst NOT in retirement phase, there would be capital gains tax payable and no exemption available. The Transitional CGT relief recognizes this and an election allows you to lock in the unrealized capital gain accrued on pension assets that will no longer be eligible for tax free earnings from 1 July 2017. Therefore members needed to consider if they were eligible for capital gains tax relief and how, if any, implications would affect them. The legislation and implications are complex so early planning and discussions with your SMSF advisor were essential. The Transitional Capital Gains Tax Relief is only available for the 2017 year and is elected by notifying the ATO with your 2017 SMSF annual return. How can we help? If you are concerned that the Government’s introduction of CGT relief have affected you and you would like more information, please feel free to give me a call or arrange a time to meet so that we can discuss your particular circumstances in more detail. Games duo a perfect match Kris and Haley part of 16-strong MNC squad
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC A PORT Macquarie couple are part of a 16-strong Mid North Coast squad competing in next week’s Special Olympics Australia National Games in Adelaide. Kris Brown, 35, from Port Macquarie will be competing in the golf competition, while wife Haley will compete in tenpin bowling. Kris’s father Kenn said the Special Olympics continued to play a major role in his son’s life and was the reason Kris had found the love of his life. “One day we were at a bowling tournament at the Special Olympics years ago and Kris was holding hands with a girl and I thought ‘what’s going on here?” said Kenn. “He married that girl and they have just celebrated their five-year wedding anniversary. “Haley is actually going down to Adelaide too, she’s one of the best tenpin bowlers in the state. “That’s by far the best thing I’ve got out of a Special Olympics, a daughter-in-law, because she makes Kris so happy. I didn’t think it was something that would ever happen, the fact that it has happened is really, really lovely.” Kris has a mild intellectual disability, but that has never stopped him from achieving his goals as a sportsman. “I coached Kris at golf 23 years ago when I ran the junior program at our club in Victoria and Kris was part of it, and when we moved up here to Port Macquarie he had given golf away,” explained Kenn. “He took it up again 18 months ago and he’s won two state titles since. “But I often say to Kris, ‘I don’t care if you win or lose, I just want to see you out there and enjoying yourself and being a really good sportsman. If you win, that’s a bonus.’ And for some of the athletes it’s the highlight of their year, if not their life.” Kenn says the atmosphere and the relationships that come from these games is what keeps him and Kris coming back for more. “I’ll be taking Kris down to the games in Adelaide along with a group of boys and some of them have never even been on a plane before,” said Kenn. “With all their different disabilities, they just accept each other for who they are. You go to competitions and it’s honestly like catching up
Above: Kris and Haley Brown
Kris Brown will be competing in the golf competition at the Special Olympics Australia National Games in Adelaide with family. The competition is certainly there, there’s no doubt about that, but the friendliness about it, it’s inspiring. “I think a lot of our able-bodied people in the community can learn a lot from the Special Olympics. “One of the most wonderful things about Special Olympics, and it’s something a lot of people really don’t appreciate is, we have people with all sorts of intellectual disabilities, between 8 years of age and 80 years of age.” Kris plays golf locally at the Port Macquarie
Golf Club and is grateful for all the support he receives from fellow golfers. “The golf club has given Kris a free membership and we are very appreciative of that,” Kenn said. “And Rohan who owns Drummond Golf in Port has really taken Kris under his wing. “On a night when it’s raining, I’ll take him down there and he will practice indoor with the computers they have set up for golf. To get that sort of support, it makes a big difference.” Kris and his family moved to Port Macquarie
15 years ago when his older brother passed away as a result of a brain tumour. His ashes were scattered off Town Beach. “We came up for a new start for Kris,” said Kenn. “I helped start Special Olympics up here because it didn’t exist, and now we’ve got 5565 athletes and it’s just fantastic. “From my perspective golf is something a father and son can do together and I’m so proud to be going down with him in Adelaide as his coach. “I’m blessed to have a 35-year-old son who still wants to spend time with his dad.” The Mid North Coast contingent includes 10 competitors from Port Macquarie, three from Taree and three from Forster. The Taree trio are Jasmin Chamberlain, Sui Watts (equestrian) and Gavin Andersen (tenpin bowling), who will be joined by Forster’s Jason Holley and Grant Percival (tenpin bowling) and Kiara-May Gaul (swimming). The Port Macquarie athletes are Cameron Skinner (basketball), Kris Brown (golf), Kylie Barefoot, Haley Brown, Jennifer Davis, Aaron Fox, Chelsea Kelly, Renee Lewin, Vikki Thompson and Darren Wallis (tenpin). Perfect conditions for summer series sailing
Rob Barwick on Drift who won on both yardstick and handicap in the morning race
PORT Macquarie Sailing Club held the last of their double headers last Sunday, consisting of the 9th race of the summer series in the morning and the 6th club championship race in the afternoon. It was a perfect warm and sunny autumn day with a great little north-easter that strengthened a little for the afternoon race, and a run-in tide that started with the start of the first race and continued all day. The catamaran’s morning race only had 2 starters, and Rob Barwick on Drift beat Dave Winter on Spica on both yardstick and handicap. The monohulls 9th summer series race was won on yardstick by Simon Gandy in Flying Fish ahead of Sharon Carney and Jeff Walsh in Red Star, Steve Bohlsen and Ed Molony in Splash Dance, 9 seconds ahead of Elsa Gandy and Caitlyn Hicks in Sail Fish, Tony Walker in Deep Purple, Peter Nyberg and Sean Watson in Sunset, and Jane Cooper and Jane Houland in Britannia. Splash Dance took the handicap win, followed by Red Star, 13 seconds ahead of Flying Fish, then Sailfish, Deep Purple, Sunset, and Britannia.
The afternoon’s 6th Club Championship race for catamarans was won on yardstick by Tony Kuhn on Stella ahead of Jack Corthals on Harpic, Drift, and Spica. Stella also won on handicap, followed by Drift, Harpic, and Spica. The yardstick winner in the monohull division in the afternoon race was Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant, followed by Jane Cooper, now with Sean Watson as crew in Britannia, Simon and Elsa Gandy in Flying Fish, Splash Dance, and Red Star. Deep Purple failed to finish, and Peter Nyberg in Sailfish had to withdraw with a broken mast. Britannia took the handicap win followed by Sailfish, 5 seconds ahead of Splash Dance, then Big Bang and Flembouyant. Next Sunday is race 10 of the summer series starting at 1pm, and Jeff Walsh is rostered on duty. The club presentation night has been put back a week to May 19 to avoid Mother’s Day, so get your name on the list in the clubhouse or on Facebook.

footytips
Finally: a reason to smile IN any sporting endeavour it is very important to celebrate a win, especially when you have been through a rough trot. So last weekend’s tipping effort of seven from eight from Your Local Independent deserves a ‘well done’. Undoubtedly this is one of the toughest seasons ever to tip a winner and you will often hear the Monday lament of ‘I only tipped two winners’. The upside is that we have one of the most even comps in a long time and there are plenty of ‘fresh faces’ in the top eight. I defy anyone to have tipped, that after round five, we would have a top eight that did not include the Storm, Sharks, Broncos or Eels. But that is the case in 2018 and it has breathed new life into the competition. Fans who have been kicking stones for a long time all of a sudden have a reason to look forward to the weekend. And what about the Dragons and Warriors. Both are yet to taste defeat and are looking really good. The same can be said for the Panthers and Wests Tigers. OK, enough ‘gloating’, we have winners to select. Roosters v Rabbitohs (Thursday, April 12, 7.50pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): This is a rivalry that goes back more than a century so buckle up for a red-hot clash. The Roosters are one of the few top sides from last year who have continued their 2017 form into this season. A good win over the Sharks will have them in the right frame of mind. Rabbitohs were good last weekend despite going down to the in-form Dragons. There could be an upset, but doubtful. Your Local Independent tips:
Roosters Storm v Knights (Friday, April 13, 6pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): You would have to think the Storm are due to hit back. They are having issues overcoming the loss of Cooper Cronk, but there is no one better than Craig Bellamy to find the answer. The Knights on the other hand will have plenty of confidence after downing the Broncos. They are expected to have an unchanged side. The Storm will be tougher than Broncs and are at home. Your Local Independent tips: Storm Dragons v Sharks (Friday, April 13, 7.50pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong): This will be another cracker! Local derby and the Dragons will be very keen to prove they are the new kings on the hill. St George are expected to be unchanged from last weekend, while the Sharks have an interesting selection dilemma. Josh Dugan is back, but where to play him? At fullback? And move Matt Moylan, who was very good in that position last weekend. Or play Dugan in the centres. The Dragons are at home and no reason to tip against them. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Warriors v Broncos (Saturday, April 14, 3pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): Warriors have another home game, and again, there is no reason to tip against this unbeaten team. The Broncos have some issues and are shaping as one of the disappointments of 2018. Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Cowboys v Bulldogs (Saturday, April 14, 5.30pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): Both are on

one win. However there is no doubt the Cows will be back. They have many of the faces who defied the odds at the back end of 2017, and have just hit a bit of a ‘dull spot’. Tipping this will be the weekend that they get their mojo back and start to climb back up the ladder. The Dogs were ordinary against the Raiders last Thursday and are on the road again. Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Raiders v Eels (Saturday, April 14, 7.35pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Raiders were better last weekend, but the hapless Eels were just as bad. There are plenty of suggestions as to why Parra are going so bad. The effort seems to be there, but the execution is terrible. The bookies have the Raiders as early favourites, so suggest we stick with that. Your Local Independent tips: Raiders Panthers v Titans (Sunday, April 15, 2pm, Panthers Stadium, Penrith): There is a possible upset looming here. After an ordinary start, the Titans have hit some form. They may be without inspirational leader Ryan James (judiciary duty!) but have plenty of back-up in the engine-room. The Panthers took an eternity to put away the Eels last weekend and you can be assured the Titans will keep coming at them. Let’s go for an upset up in the mountains. Your Local Independent tips: Titans Sea Eagles v Wests Tigers (Sunday, April 15, 4.10pm, Lottoland, Sydney): You can’t tip against the Tigers at the moment. After edging out the Storm last weekend

they will be on a high. Mentally they are due for an off week and that might come this weekend if they underestimate Manly. The Sea Eagles are likely to have brilliant fullback Tom Trbojevic back from injury. Interestingly the bookies have Manly as slight early favourites. But best you go with the form line.
