A history of giving By SUE PATERICK
SINCE its inception 30 years ago the Kempsey Cancerian Committee (KCC) has raised an astounding $920,000 to help fund medical research. It is the longest running Cancerian committee in Australia and only one of five in the whole country. To help celebrate this milestone, the KCC invites the local community to a Pearl Gala
Dinner to be held at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club on Saturday May 20. According to KCC President, Helen Packwood, the RSL’s head chef, Lloyd Newell, has created a wonderful menu for the event. She said Lloyd was a great supporter of the KCC. His late Father, the artist Rex Newell, was also a great supporter of this worthy cause. Apart from a Gala sit-down dinner, the glittering night of fun will also include a major raffle, auction, live music, dancing and

interesting speakers. Over the past 30 years, the Kempsey Cancerian Committee has held 26 successful balls, a night in the vines and a cocktail party. All proceeds from its functions go to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF). The KCC has contributed money to providing equipment for the Ovarian Cancer Research Laboratory at St Vincent’s Hospital and also a Laboratory at Westmead Hospital, of which it has the honour of naming rights.

It all began in 1986 when the ACRF held its first ever fundraiser, an Enlist for Life Relay around Australia. Sir Peter Ables, Lady Sonia McMahon and Mrs Barbara Mackay-Cruise began the ACRF back in 1984 to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. The idea for the ACRF’s first fundraiser was to enlist the aid of the Australian Army to help raise $1,000,000 to set up a research laboratory. • Continued Page 7

Koala Hospital Open Day
3
“
We would like as many people as possible down here to come through and enjoy the day - every little bit counts
“
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC COME and check out Port Macquarie’s furry friends at the Koala Hospital’s annual Open Day on Easter Saturday. The Koala Hospital is celebrating its 17th annual Open Day, a day to educate and interact with the public. “There will be lots of activities that don’t usually happen at this year’s Open Day,” said Scott Castle, Assistant Clinical Director at the Koala Hospital. “There will be face painting for young and old; raffles and a chocolate wheel with some incredible goods and services up for grabs; silent auctions and live auctions with the entertaining auctioneer Tony Decker; a chocolate wheel with loads of prizes, and much more.” There are currently 20 koalas in care at the Koala Hospital. “On the day we will have seven koalas on exhibit. There will also be guided koala tours operating throughout the day,” said Scott. Scott is also excited to share the Koala Hospital’s brand new exhibit. “Our latest exciting addition is the interactive museum exhibit,” said Scott. “We are just doing the finishing touches on the new exhibit and then it will be open every day of the year, except for Christmas Day. “The exhibit will feature a sculptured koala habitat installed by Frugal Arts and made with recycled materials, mounted Animalia, a user friendly microscope, life-history and historical koala information, offering an interesting learning experience for all ages.” Another great reason to come along is, of course, to support Australia’s iconic emblem – the koala. “We would like as many people as possible down here to come through and enjoy the day every little bit counts,” Scott said. “The money goes straight back into the hospital; towards improving our facilities and basically feeding the koalas.” Of course all of the efforts to keep these koalas happy comes down to its volunteers. “We have around 200 local volunteers,” said Scott.
The Koala Hospital’s Scott Castle (above) is looking forward to Saturday’s open day which will feature a host of exhibits and fun activities for the public
“They’re on a roster system and we only have a few paid staff. We are always looking for more local volunteers but we also have a long waiting list, a three-year waiting list for international volunteers. They put their name down and we usually have one or two a month. And of course, we are always happy to have more local volunteers to share the roster around, because it can get quite busy.” The event will also have BBQs serving bacon and egg rolls for breakfast and sausage sandwiches and vegie burgers all day. Devonshire Tea will be served outside Roto House beside the Hospital, with Daniel Hopkins serenading. Other entertainers who are kindly donating their time
and talents include the ukulele band Z Chords, Sing Australia, belly-dancing Amelia, and children’s entertainer Troppo Bob. There will be a ‘Hello Koalas’ stand featuring the latest addition to the koala family, Ranger Riley, and Uncle Bill will be performing a ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony to officially open the day. Come along and help save the koalas at the Koala Hospital’s annual Open Day on Easter Saturday (April 15) from 9am until 3pm. The hospital will remain open until 4pm. For more information about the Koala Hospital visit http://www.koalahospital.org.au or call 02 6584 1522.

Airport expansion data ‘misleading’ I AM opposed to the expansion of current operations at Kempsey airport for a number of reasons, including the lack of community consultation and the misleading data contained in the DA. Economic benefits and job creation have been promoted as a means of gaining approval for the expansion. However, the data supporting the economic and employment evaluation is based on modelling by Deloitte Access Economics, government departments and individual writers dating back as far as 2009 up to 2014 with NONE of it evaluated locally. The predicted creation of 165 full-time jobs based on a cohort of 100 students (noted in the DA) is unrealistic as is the assertion that students will, on average, spend approximately $100 per day locally when, according to the DA, the
London attack IN The Cowper Report (March 30, 2017), Luke Hartsukyer spoke of the Westminster attack on March 22 as “not the first terrorist atrocity carried out by Islamic extremists targeting our democratic institutions”. London’s Metropolitan Police
majority of their time will be in study, flight or in the dining and indoor/ outdoor recreation areas proposed for this development. Operational hours for this DA are stated as 6am until midnight, based on total syllabus hours. However, the AIAC notes in its DA that students would likely complete more than total syllabus hours, requiring increased aircraft movements and flexibility in the hours of operation, i.e. 24 hours a day. AIAC provided the air quality report with no actual tests, only using data released by the maker of the aircraft it intends to purchase, asserting that pollution created by that aircraft can be equated to an average 4WD. This is qualified, however, by the note that this comparison is equal to the aircraft operating at only 30 per
cent power, which means nothing in the real sense as aircraft don’t operate perpetually on 30 per cent power. Therefore diesel pollution from various levels of power in 28,000 takeoffs and 28,000 landings plus overflights will contaminate the area, including our town water catchment and rainwater tanks. AIAC acknowledges the pollution but deems this level of pollution to be low, based on modelling. GHD provided the noise pollution report with data supplied only by AIAC, again from the aircraft maker, based on noise emitted by one aircraft. This report was, like the other reports, purely based on modelling with no actual data gathered to support the assertion that aircraft noise will be masked by ambient noise. AIAC notes in its DA that up to 180 students may be flying in rotation
so it could be expected that the noise levels will be quite substantial. It appears that AIAC is in control of all of these heavily weighted reports. Where are the independent reports? Finally, the preparation of a second memorandum of understanding between council and AIAC, will address the 50-year lease possibly being converted to freehold. A lease makes far more economic sense and leaves the land in question under council control. We need to protect and promote the future of our region as clean, green and environmentally sustainable instead of seeking to sell it off for a few pieces of silver. Rose Cunningham Yarravel
found that it was likely that the attacker - a 52-year-old Briton born in Kent - acted alone and it was unlikely that Daesh ordered the attack. If the Cowper federal representative of our democratic process wanted to incite racial vilification against the Islamic faith and its adherents, the vast majority of whom abhor these attacks,
then naming an easily identifiable group within our community is a coward’s way of doing it. Why didn’t Luke Hartsukyer opt to display the difference between the democratic process and the Daesh process by getting his facts right, embracing diversity in all its manifestations such as differences in
religious beliefs and dress? It would have been more helpful for our efforts to thwart local terrorist attacks if he praised the efforts of our Australian Islamic friends who work hard to minimise the radicalisation of our youth, without any federal funding or support. Colleen Carmody

Thumbs Down IN regard to footpaths in Kempsey. New ones are being constructed in the most unwanted places (West Street to Burnt Bridge), being used only for young kids to ride their motorbikes (illegally) on. Another being built at railway bridge from steps to boat ramp? Elderly residents of Borgerville Gardens have asked for a footpath from their residence to the post box 100m away and can’t get a thing done.

I JUST wanted to show my appreciation to a lovely lady called Megan and her husband who work at the real food market out front of the Glasshouse, Port Macquarie. My car battery died and my toddler and I were stuck in town, and had no NRMA membership so Megan and another man who was walking past came to our rescue and charged up the battery so we could make it to Battery World for a new one! Just goes to show there are some kind hearted generous people in this community!
Thumbs Up I WOULD like to express my sincere thanks to the palliative care team at the Kempsey District Hospital. Doctors, nurses and auxiliary staff for the wonderful support they gave myself and my family during my wife’s illness. You are special people, thank you!

TO the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. Bring back some colourful flowers to the garden at the top end of Horton Street. The new garden looks so boring and doesn’t really acknowledge our earlier English settlers only our Indigenous heritage (which is good) but it would be nice to incorporate the both of these. We are a tourist destination and I’m sure this would be beneficial to tourists as well. And this would address our history and heritage, especially with the historic graves behind the gardens.
Thumbs Up TO Trial Bay Kiosk and Smokey Cape Café. I organised a special lunch to be held at the Trial Bay Kiosk but when we arrived - all 30 of us - the Kiosk was without power because a tree had fallen over the lines. The owners of the business were devastated, but despite this, they had organised an alternate venue for us prior to our arrival, thus saving us from any inconvenience. The Smokey Cape Cafe had to organise extra staff, with very little notice, and then they catered to our every need in a wonderfully friendly manner. The consideration given to us by the Kiosk and then by the Smokey Cape Cafe was second to none and it was wonderful to experience the cooperation between two businesses. A big thank you.

WELL excuse me for thinking out loud, but seriously every day I feel more and more like we are living in the middle of a lunatic asylum! The world is a crazy enough place to make sense of at the best of times but I think we have reached a new height of crazy. I have had so many WT(F) moments in the last month or two, I can’t keep track of them! It just astounds me to the point of rendering me speechless. Globally, well, we have a scary situation unfolding and I don’t like the way it’s heading. I wrote about my concerns for this sort of thing happening last year should Team Trump get in. To the haters who bombarded me with vicious mail, I hope you’re happy. Politically, we seem to have a bunch of elitist thugs (all levels of Government), who – when they’re not making decisions that will impact our country, yet not necessarily be for the good of the entire country - are busy pointing the finger at each other rather than working for the country. We pay for this, in more ways than one! Let’s suspend their pay, put them on an incentive scheme. Different levels of pay for different achievements. Bonuses paid for leaving your ego and personal agenda at home. Maybe Government should listen to the people rather than make crazy decisions on our behalf? Or is it just me?
Thumbs Down
TO the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for getting another grant for a Airport Terminal upgrade. This is our gateway to a great tourist destination but what about that disgraceful entrance road? The next flood may be the one that cuts the airport off.

Kempsey Toyota on top By SUE PATERICK IT was love at first sight when Kempsey Toyota’s Dealer Principal, Paul Payne, first saw the Macleay Valley and its beautiful beaches back in mid-June, 2015. “I thought the place was amazing,” he said. At the time Paul and his wife, Pam, lived in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, which was a four-hour round trip to the closest beach. Even though the Yarra Valley is green with vineries and wide-open spaces, Paul said he felt instantly calm and tranquil when he saw the cobalt sea and knew this was where he wanted to be. “I knew we could live 10 minutes from the beach and thought this is it,” Paul said. “I could be happy here.” Once a sea change was definite, Paul began looking for a car dealership and found Kempsey Toyota was for sale. Paul was running a successful car franchise in Melbourne then and has worked in car sales since he was 18 years old. His first job was with Holden. When he was 40 he opened a big used car dealership in Melbourne. “I left Holden to open a used car site to better understand that market,” Paul said. “I learnt a lot in eight years and then I decided to buy a car franchise.” Even with his lifetime of experience, Paul still found being accepted into the Toyota franchise was a hard and long process with as many as four interviews over a period of 10 months. When Paul took over in August, 2016 he reconstructed the business and employed five more staff. In March this year Kempsey Toyota won the Silver Knight Award for Overall Excellence in Business at the Toyota Dealer of the Year Awards in Sydney at Star Casino.

PORT Macquarie is set to get more public housing with a multi-million dollar housing development to be built. The NSW Government’s third Communities Plus Neighbourhood Projects package will include a site in Port Macquarie, said Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams. The site in Grant and Gordon Streets will be offered along with nine other locations in NSW through an Expression of Interest (EOI) to both not-for-profit Community Housing Providers (CHPs) and the private sector. “This is a great win for our community. These sites will be redeveloped to deliver more social housing along with private and affordable housing,” Mrs Williams said. The ten sites as part of the Neighbourhood Projects will deliver an estimated 640 new private, social and affordable homes across New South Wales. There are a lot of indirect health benefits just from sitting around a table meeting some new people and playing a game of cards
Play your cards right and Bridge is a winner By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THERE is one club in Port Macquarie whose members are certainly playing their cards right. The Port Macquarie-Hastings Bridge Club is holding an Open Day on April 21 for the public to see the benefits of playing Bridge. And what better way to make new friendships and keep those brain cells working than playing the world’s most popular card game. “Its an opportunity for people to come and see what the clubhouse is all about,” said Ian Peterson, publicity officer for the Port Macquarie-Hastings Bridge Club. “It’s an important thing in a town like Port Macquarie where our average age is about 10 years older than NSW as a whole. As people tend to get older, a lot of the more active sports like lawn bowls and golfing become easy to drop out of and so does the social network that went with it. “Bridge gives you an option. You’ve always got people and Bridge is a partnership game, you are always playing in a group of four people. You have a partner and you are playing against two other people. It just helps build relationships. You meet a lot of different people and personalities and it’s a pretty good way to spend four hours having a good time.” Ian has been involved in the club since 2010 and says the health benefits from the game are just as important. “There are a lot of health benefits to playing Bridge that tie into an ageing demographic,” Ian explains. “So many people aged 50-plus are concerned about the future in terms of dementia. Bridge is no magic bullet, but it does mean that you are thinking a lot, concentrating a lot, and what tends to happen is you keep your brain and memory sharp. There have been studies
Playing Bridge is not only an excellent way to meet new people, but also helps keep the brain and memory sharp
done that show that if you keep mentally active you tend to sleep better at night, worry less and depression and melancholy are less of an issue. So there are a lot of indirect health benefits just from sitting around a table meeting some new people and playing a game of cards.”
With just under 300 members in the Bridge Club, there are people from all ages and all cardskill sets. “They can come in if they like, absolutely cold, not know anything about it, even playing cards,” assures Ian.

“You don’t have to have any particular skill set, you don’t even have to know how to shuffle a pack of cards, they will teach you that too. “Everything is based on initial instruction and the principles of Bridge and then we practice card play. You learn a lesson on any particular day but you also put it into practice with sample hands.” The facility is air conditioned and holds up to 200 players during the club championships. “There will also be some demonstration play on the day and the people giving the lessons will give a rundown on what’s involved, how long the lessons go for and any questions people have,” said Ian. “We play six days a week and you can pick and choose when you want to play. There are specific sessions for newer players or experienced players so you won’t come up against someone who will whip your tail every week.” Come and check out the fun with the Port Macquarie-Hastings Bridge Club on Friday , April 21 from 11:30am at Hamilton Green, 176 Hastings River Drive. Learn about the fundamentals of Bridge and consider signing up for the New Player Lesson Program starting 9.00am on Friday, April 28 and continuing for 10 weeks. Golf and a great cause By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
The original Kempsey Cancerian Committee, formed in 1987, (back row from left) Dick Adams, Max Packwood, the late Grame Barnett, Darrell Crilley, Brian Irvine and Ross Forster. (Front from left) Helen Packwood, Bob Gilligan, Kay Irvine, the late Gerry Proudfoot, Meg Pamplin and Marg Mottee.
Cancerians celebrate 30 years
• From Page 1 Kempsey Shire Council was approached back then to set up a committee to help organise a fundraising event, a welcoming party and to billet the relay team overnight. The Macleay Valley rallied to the cause and held a fashion parade at the RSL, where $14,000 was raised. “The support from the local community was overwhelming,” Helen said. “Everything was donated, even food.” A grateful Barbara Mackay-Cruise visited Kempsey again after that and the Kempsey Cancerian Committee was formed in 1987. Helen has been a KCC member since the beginning because she lost her Mum to cancer and then her first husband five months later. She was living in Canberra at the time and was left with two young babies to raise on her own, so she came home to the Macleay Valley. “Since then there have been many changes and research for cancer,” Helen said. “They have come a long way and the type
of cancer that my first husband had can now be cured.” Years later Helen found happiness again when she married Max, whose first wife also died of cancer leaving him with three small children. So raising funds to help fight cancer is something the Packwoods feel very passionate about. The Kempsey Cancerian Committee’s 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner starts at 6pm. Tickets cost $80 and will be available at Just Lingerie in Peads Arcade in Kempsey’s Smith Street, but be quick as seats are limited. To find out more contact Vivian Kyle on 6562 5911. The KCC is made up of dedicated people with a lot of great ideas for the future. They would love to welcome some new faces. Give Helen a call on 6566 9205 for more information or checkout the Kempsey Cancerian Committee’s Facebook page.
HOW about a game of golf and support a great cause at the same time? Port Macquarie Legacy is celebrating 50 years hosting its annual Legacy Golf Day, making it the longest running charity golf event in the Hastings area. “It’s our second largest fundraiser for the year,” said Ken Fahey, President of Port Macquarie Legacy. “Our largest fundraiser is our badge week in the first week of September. We have nearly 600 dependents and all of our funds raised in Port Macquarie-Hastings Camden Haven area stays in this area.” The golf day was originally called the Junior Legacy Golf Day and was first held in 1968 by the Junior Legacy Fund Raising Group. This group was formed after one of the Legacy members suggested to a group of young men who regularly drank at the Don Steele bar of the local RSL Club that they could raise funds for Legacy, and they agreed, conducting raffles at the RSL Club. So successful was this group that in 1967 they were given formal recognition and constituted as the Junior Legacy Fundraising Group. “We are really looking for additional golfers and particularly the social club golf teams around the area to come play in the morning session and then the golf club members, and that doesn’t just mean the Port Macquarie Golf Club members, but players from the area will play in the afternoon,” said Ken. Ken says that there is still a strong need for Legacy. “There is still a need for this organisation,
particularly with the younger veterans who are returning and those suffering from PTSD,” Ken explains. “We help with social isolation, particularly for our widows. We have a social group where ladies come together once a month for morning tea and they also have a bus trip where they head off once a month. We also have a junior legacy group, which is a fundraising group who has been operating since 1964. “A lot of younger people who have an affiliation with someone who has served in the defence force or whose grandparents served in the Second World War or Vietnam, they tend to know about us or have received help from us.” The Port Macquarie Legacy receives little to no government support, so it is crucial that the community supports the golf day. “In previous years we have raised around $8,000 and we hope this being the 50th year that we can raise a fair bit more,” said Ken. “We would also love to see more legacy volunteers.” Tee-off for the golf day is a shotgun start at 7am for social groups with a 12-noon tee-off for anyone who is a member of a golf club. For the early tee-off, a sausage sandwich is available from 6.30am. A barbeque lunch of steak, sausages and salad is supplied to all golfers. Entry fees are $30 for social golfers and covers the cost of breakfast and lunch. Entry for members of golf clubs is $20. The event would not be possible without the generous support of the Port Macquarie Golf Club and the business houses of the Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Camden Haven areas. Contact the Port Macquarie Hastings Legacy office on 6583 3570 if you wish to participate or make a donation.

Kempsey Shire Council invites artists and art based collaborative teams to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the creation of two public sculptures to be installed in the roundabouts on the southern (Slim Dusty) and northern (Dunghutti) Pacific Highway interchanges to Kempsey. Since the completion of the Pacific Highway bypass in 2013, Council has been undertaking major road and streetscape development along the old highway corridor. The Gateway Sculptures are an important component of this process, and will create a distinct identity and sense of place for the Shire. They will be visible on approach for northbound and southbound traffic entering and exiting into Kempsey from the Pacific Highway. Concepts are sought that reflect the history, landscape and community of the area while showcasing the Macleay River. Artists can apply to undertake one or both Gateway projects.

Their dedication and tenacity paid off with the team successfully taking out third place overall and being awarded the ‘2017 Rookie All Star Award’, competing against students from Australia, China, Taiwan and Brazil. Six of the 18 robotics students will now represent our region and its technology future. They will battle it out against world teams testing their skills of problem solving, teamwork and collaboration at the FIRST® Robotics World Championships to be held in Houston in April. The NSW Government has also announced that in addition to targeted police enforcement to deter dangerous behaviour such as speed, drink-driving and non-seat belt use, people can expect to see more education and awareness campaigns in highrisk locations over the Easter break. There’s no such thing as safe speeding. For every kilometre you’re over the speed limit you’re not only endangering your own life, but the lives of all other road users. If you’re having a few drinks, it’s important that you have a Plan B to get home safely. Double demerits will be in force this Easter from midnight Wednesday, April 12 to midnight Monday, April 17 and again for the holiday period from midnight Thursday, April 20 to midnight Tuesday, April 25. Lismore Floods: Our thoughts this week are with local communities on the north coast, including Lismore and Tweed Heads, following the devastating floods that have sadly claimed a number of lives. Tax cuts boost local business SMALL and medium sized businesses on the coast will receive tax cuts so they can grow their company and employ more people as part of the Federal Coalition Government’s visionary Enterprise Tax Plan. These historic cuts will allow many local businesses, like the butcher, newsagent and pub, to keep more of the money they have earnt to invest and grow their business so they can employ more local people. Nationally, these tax cuts will put $5.2 billion back into the hands of small and medium sized businesses to expand on their hard work. Once the Enterprise Tax Plan is fully delivered, it will permanently increase the size of the economy by 1.2 per cent of GDP – that’s more than $17 billion in today’s dollars every single year. More than 3.2 million small and medium sized businesses employing 6.5 million people across the nation will benefit from cutting the tax rate. That is more than half of the Australian workforce. The Coalition Government is also pleased to confirm we have delivered on all the tax cuts which were promised during this term of government – inside the first year of the term. Passing these cuts is critical to growing the national economy because seven out of eight people are employed by private enterprise.
CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
Small and medium sized businesses with a turnover of up to $50m will benefit from the tax cut while the Coalition Government remains committed to passing the entire 10year Enterprise Tax Plan because we know it will grow the economy, increase investment and create more jobs. That ultimately puts more money in the pockets of Australian workers. In contrast, Bill Shorten has no plan for job creation and no plan for growing the economy. In fact, his frontbench cannot name one single pro-jobs, pro-growth policy they have. The Coalition Government knows hard-working families who own and run their own companies are the engine room of the economy. The successful passage of these vital tax cuts has now left Mr Shorten with a multi-billion dollar black hole in how he will pay for his reckless spending. He must tell residents why he will again take higher taxes and higher deficits to the next election.

AS the influence of the internet spreads to every area of our society, the potential for cybercrime also increases. Cybercrime is conservatively estimated to cost Australians more than $1 billion each year. Now, more than ever, it is important to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself, your family, and your business from the risks of cybercrime. The Australian Government is committed to working in partnership with the business community to promote a safe and secure internet which enables businesses and individuals to thrive in the online environment, while managing the associated risks. There are some simple steps we can take to stay safe online. The Stay Smart Online website – www.staysmartonline.gov.au – provides a number of important free resources to help. Here’s a word thrown about at weddings
VERY few ministers of religion these days encourage throwing of confetti in the church, or even in the near grounds. Their argument is that confetti is difficult to eradicate from all sorts of places. Imagine their argument if confetti consisted of eggs, lollies or pieces of fruit. Then they would have something to complain about. Confetti wasn’t always the little pieces of paper we see these days. Years ago confetti consisted of almonds, eggs, coins, fruit, candles or even flowers. Some people might even say they were the good old days, when we could aim a projectile at the enemy down the road and get away with it. The word goes back to Italy in the Middle Ages. Think of confectionary and you will get an idea of confetti’s origins. In the Middle Ages participants at carnivals used to throw objects, sometimes rotten eggs and sometimes eggshells filled with perfume, at the watching crowd. That reminds me of the school bus from Cardiff, with the boys downstairs and the girls upstairs, and the smell of rotten egg gas throughout the bus, but don’t let me be distracted. In 1597 a bloke called Juan Fernandez de
my
LAURIE BARBER
Velasco banned the throwing of eggs and other activities that we needn’t mention here and the custom went into recess for about 100 years. Anyway, eggs were expensive. When the custom was reintroduced they were still throwing things that were likely to hurt, so mud balls became popular. Milan was a popular centre. “Go to Milan and become covered in mud.” Milan was also a silk manufacturing centre, so mud gave way to silk. Throwing things became popular at weddings and those Italians who couldn’t afford mud or silk began throwing lollies (and this is where we get the word confectionery, but this column isn’t about confectionery). Then some bright spark hit on throwing paper. By this time the custom had extended to places such as the USA and UK, where people
used to throw things to bring good luck and fertility. They decided to abandon the idea of throwing almonds, various nuts, rice and dates and instead of this threw coloured paper. It is not true that mothers-in-law threw paper still in the boxes. Well, I wouldn’t go so far as to say “not true”, because I believe it has happened. But the custom of throwing confetti spread to many parts of the world. Now we don’t throw rice, or even money, but we throw bits of paper instead. It’s a silly custom, I agree, but they have to do something on their wedding day. Charles Dickens said in 1846 “the spectators would strike down great bags of confetti”. In 1883 a fellow called Charles Brinsley-Richards said in Seven Years At Eton “the confetti which are flung from the balconies of Roman houses at carnival time”. Sometimes, they threw flowers. But if you have been jilted at the altar, you could throw consider throwing confetti at the newlyweds next time around. You might even consider not taking it out of the box before you throw it. You could always call out “oops”. lauriebarber.com; lbword.com.au

Opening in October 2015, Home Instead Senior Care is a locally owned and operated premium service offering home care for seniors which ensures their clients can maintain an independent life-style in the comfort of their own home. Rod and Scott, along with their dedicated team of CAREGivers, believe in the importance of open and honest communication, which is the key to building a foundation for strong relationships between their team and clients – all based on mutual trust and respect. This principle has served Rod and Scott well and is the basis for the successes Home Instead Senior Care has achieved along the way. The first accolades came when Home Instead Senior Care was announced winners for New Business in the 2016 Holiday Coast Credit Union Greater Port Macquarie Business Awards - a fantastic achievement in their first 12 months of business. Moving forward, 2017 is proving to be another successful year with the announcement that Home Instead Senior Care Port Macquarie and Mid North Coast are now an Australian Government Approved Provider of Home Care Packages. Rod Lewis said: “This is good news for a few reasons. For seniors who have an existing home care package, they now have choices. There is the option to stay with their current provider or
Home Instead Senior Care owners Rod Lewis and Scott Marsh change providers if they aren’t happy with their current service. For seniors waiting for Government subsidised home care packages, there were over 10,000 home care packages made available in March through the national queue which will
be allocated to individuals who can then choose the provider of their choice from the list of Australian Government Approved Home Care Package Providers available from ‘My Aged Care’ (Australian Govt Department of Health). “The best news? Many seniors think services
from Home Instead Senior Care are financially out of their reach. Not anymore! These changes mean that anyone is eligible for government subsidised home care packages can now access the premium services that we offer. Home Instead Senior Care offers five-star service. We tailor everything we do within the individual packages to fit with the client’s wishes and preferences. Our services can be offered up to 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Scott and Rod have run several successful information sessions across the Mid North Coast regarding the changes to the Home Care Packages in February this year and will be running two more sessions at Port City Bowling Club on Thursday, April 20 at 10am and 1pm. These sessions are a great opportunity to hear all about the services that are on offer and how Home Instead Senior Care may work for you. If you would like to attend one of the information sessions RSVP by calling Rod or Scott on 02 6583 9944. You are also welcome to call for a no obligation, free Professional Care Consultation. Riding high at the Easter Show THIS week five riders and three horses from the Riding for the Disabled Association (NSW) Kempsey-Macleay Centre competed at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. It was the sixth year that Macleay Valley riders have competed. Talisha Armitage, Dean Harvey, Aiden Hodges, Jacoba Rudder and Emily Davis all qualified through the Regional Mounted Games held in September, 2016. They competed in the Bending, Flagging, Key Hole and Barrel Racing events. One team consisting of a coach, mount and rider also paraded in the Best Presented event at the show. All three horses competed in the Horse of the Year event, which was sponsored by the Royal Agricultural Society. President of the Riding for the Disabled Association’s Kempsey-Macleay Centre, Marie Purkis, said this event was keenly contested. “Being a part of the Royal Easter Show is a wonderful experience for all our riders and we are very proud of them,” she said. “To ride at the Show is the ultimate so it’s very prestigious. “Plus, the whole atmosphere is exciting and I’m sure they had fun.” This year East Coast Horse Transport was engaged to get the horses safely to and from the Show, picking up the Manning/Great Lakes horses on the way down. Riding for the Disabled began in the Macleay Valley 12 years ago and has six horses, four coaches and 20 volunteers. The coaches are Chereyll Beard, Tracy Davis, Lesley Russell and Victor Rudder. Marie said the riders get so much confidence from riding horses because they are doing something on their own.

don’t have any experience with horses as there is always something to do. Contact Marie on 6562 5708 for more information
New device helps diabetes sufferers FREE continuous glucose monitoring devices are now available for eligible children and people under the age of 21 years with type 1 diabetes. Nationals Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker said this new lifesaving technology will reduce the hassle of the daily finger-prick for people with diabetes. “This will be life-changing for children, young people and their families,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “Eligible young Australians will now be able to access these devices for free through the National Diabetes Services Scheme – saving around $4000 per year. “This was a commitment made by the Government before the 2016 election, and I am delighted to be delivering for the people of Cowper. “The $54 million initiative will help families and children to better self-manage their diabetes, reducing visits to emergency departments and missed school days. “The finger-prick method for blood glucose testing is effective and accurate, but it can be a difficult and upsetting process for some children and their parents, with up to 10 tests needed every day – including several times every night. “I’ve been contacted by one mother who said a continuous glucose monitoring device would mean the end of 2am wake-up calls for blood glucose tests. Continuous glucose monitors will automatically alert users or their parents if glucose levels are getting too low without the need for continuous finger prick tests.” Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that attacks a person’s ability to produce insulin. To access continuous glucose monitors products, children and young adults will need to consult with an authorised health professional, who will assess the patient’s suitability against specific eligibility criteria, as part of an overall management plan for diabetes. Eligibility assessment forms will be available to download at www.ndss.com.au
No mention of cash stockpile RECENTLY, I re-read the Port MacquarieHastings Council submission to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) seeking a permanent Special Rate Variation (SRV). Not because I love reading mind-numbing council reports or submissions. Rather, a decision is about to be made on whether IPART will allow the rate increase. An SRV is effectively a rate increase, over and above the NSW Rate Peg allowance. Earlier this year, with eight councillors to one in support, PMHC made an application to IPART to raise rates over and above the rate peg amount by 3.89 per cent - bringing the total amount council will try to raise rates this coming year by more than 5 per cent permanently. The submission contains what appears to be a substantial amount of work completed

by the council, particularly the ‘community engagement’ section but also on accompanying strategies, plans and council policies relevant to the SRV. What is missing from the submission and also the ‘community consultation’ aspect of the
process and subsequent application, are some fundamental truths about council’s current financial position and the approximate 50 per cent achievement versus planned works when it comes to project delivery. Nowhere in the submission or ‘information’ provided to the community throughout the process specifically explains the (now) $239,000,000 cash-stash and the reasons for that cash stockpile growing exponentially, month after month. It’s my strong view, that if you ask the ratepayers if they would like to see more invested in roads and infrastructure, including water, sewer and drainage, then of course most would say yes. It’s also likely the case that if you told the community that you had more than one quarter
of a billion dollars in cash accounts which grows at approximately $25,000,000 a year over the last four years because you can’t spend money on projects quick enough, then most ratepayer would tell you where to shove the requested rate rise. Without trying to labour the point, the council’s SRV application includes written submissions from community members who provided in-their-own-words feedback to council on the application for an SRV. Of the five submissions received and included in the application, all five opposed the rate rise. One submission, in part read and I quote, “A biased survey without full disclosure provides no basis for yet another rate increase.” IPART are set to make their determination around mid-May 2017.

DAYLIGHT savings is a great time to remember to test your smoke alarms. 50% of residential fires occur during the winter time. Smoke alarms expire. All alarms in your home need to be within their date of expiry, as all smoke alarms have a ten year useful life. They need to be cleaned regularly. However many are faulty and need to be replaced sooner due to lack of cleaning and servicing. You may have pressed the test button and assumed your alarm is working but this may not be the case as pressing the test button only tests that the alarm has power and that the siren is working. Pressing the button does not test the alarms ability to detect smoke and actually work in the event of a fire. Janeck Kaczorowski, area manager for Smoke Alarms Australia, notes the risks in residential properties are high. “In our recent study in NSW shows that since January 2015 we have serviced 60,000 properties. 61% of these properties had been non-compliant. This campaign is a great way for people to use their creativity to highlight our scenery, attractions, eateries and accommodation
“
THE NSW Government is inviting holidaymakers and locals to share videos of their short breaks in our area as part of a marketing campaign to promote travel to rural and regional NSW. Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, said the campaign presents a great opportunity to showcase the Mid North Coast. “Our area has so much to offer holidaymakers. This campaign is a great way for people to use their creativity to highlight our scenery, attractions, eateries and accommodation to potential visitors looking for their next escape,” Mrs Williams said. “I encourage locals and visitors to get out their cameras and start capturing and sharing the moments, experiences and landscapes that make the Port Macquarie electorate a great place to visit. “The very best video contributions will be used in a curated series of eight short films that will promote rural and regional NSW as an outstanding holiday and short break destination, capturing the attention and imagination of holidaymakers. “Tourism offers great prospects and benefits for our local economy. In the year ended September, 2016, regional NSW welcomed 21.4 million international and domestic overnight visitors who injected more than $10.7 billion into those local economies,” Mrs Williams said.
The marketing campaign is in addition to the record $43 million of funding over four years already committed by the NSW Government to boost tourism in regional areas. Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said the ‘What I Love About Holidays in NSW’ campaign will use videos and photos taken by travel enthusiasts and locals to showcase the vast array of experiences, landscapes and attractions on offer in rural and regional NSW. “We are encouraging locals, visitors, avid photographers and filmmakers to capture their extraordinary holiday experiences and share them with the world,” Mr Marshall said. To take part in the campaign, people are urged to upload their videos to www.visitnsw.com/ ilovensw. Videos and photos can also be shared on Twitter and Instagram using #ILoveNSW. To help encourage people to take part, Destination NSW has already curated five example videos which are housed at www. visitnsw.com. In just one month, those videos have attracted more than 1.2 million views, highlighting visitor interest in Regional NSW. The eight best video contributions will win a Canon prize pack, which includes a Canon camera and a photography tutorial. For more information visit www.visitnsw. com
Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor Peter Besseling, and locals Jess Dunlop and Emma Hoskins enjoy free WiFi at Town Green
Free Wi-Fi at Port’s Town Green
LOCALS and visitors to the Port Macquarie Town Green can now benefit from free WiFi access under a trial launched by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. Named PortConnect, mobile device users can surf without charge as part of the 12-month trial that aims to enhance the experience of enjoying the CBD foreshore. The service offers tourists to the area another way to share their experiences using #iloveportmacquarie on social media, thereby encouraging more people to visit and explore our region. “Free WiFi has been identified as a key service expected of tourism destinations like Port Macquarie, and the service being offered at Town Green is a step towards improving infrastructure throughout our region,” said Mayor Peter Besseling.
“Our foreshore is such a beautiful and popular location, and locals will be just as keen to make use of the service when they’re out and about enjoying events and experiences on the Town Green. “Council recognises that an increasing number of local businesses and tourism operators in the region offer free WiFi and we hope this will complement their offering,” Mayor Besseling said. With a generous download limit of 500 megabytes available, Port Connect users won’t need to monitor their individual data plans so closely. And with increasing student numbers in Port Macquarie, the Town Green will be a great place for them to meet up and compare notes using the service.

Baiting program to target wild dogs NORTH Coast Local Land Services is coordinating a wild dog group ground baiting program with public and private landholders in the Lower Macleay and surrounding localities in the beginning of May. A ground baiting program for wild dogs will be undertaken, in conjunction with both private and public land managers, for the week commencing Monday May 8. This program has evolved through widespread consultation with land managers and is an integral part of an overall control strategy as outlined in the North Coast Region Wild Dog Management Plan 2015-2020. Peter James, Senior Biosecurity Officer said of the baiting program: “It’s important for landholders to understand that wild dog control cannot be a ‘one off’ approach, but requires regular baiting at key seasonal periods, preferably based on a nil-tenure approach where

neighbouring landholders are undertaking the control at the same time. “Over the last three years we have seen more land managers getting involved in group programs, rather than just trying to tackle the problem on their own and it’s fantastic to see the Lower Macleay now taking this on board.” This program will target wild dogs using 1080 fresh meat baits and will include, but not be restricted to, the following localities Collombatti, Clybucca, Bellimbopinni, Jacks Crossing, Gladstone, Kinchela, Belmore River, Verges Creek, Old Station and all remaining areas of the Lower Macleay Floodplain. This program is designed to reduce the impact of wild dogs on agricultural livestock, domestic and native animals. The program will be undertaken using best practice control techniques by land managers who are trained and qualified in the use of pesticides.
Strategies will be implemented to reduce the risk to non-target species. Lands managers who do not currently possess a current Pesticide (AQF) Qualification can attend a 1080/Pindone training course provided by North Coast Local Land Services. It is important for land managers to be trained in wild dog control techniques and North Coast Local Land Services offers regular Vertebrate Pest Training programs (VPT) across the North Coast region. The three hour VPT course, which is free, gives landholders a clear understanding of 1080 and Pindone use and the legal obligations that apply. Land Managers who are interested in participating in this important pest animal control program should register their interest by contacting the North Coast Local Land Services on 6563 6700 or Peter James, Senior Biosecurity Officer on 0429 842 966.
TIME is running out for budding young artists to enter the Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Brigade Kids Champion Competition. Children from Kindergarten to Year 2 across NSW are encouraged to use their creativity and imagination to help promote fire safety, and have the chance to win great prizes. FRNSW Acting Commissioner Jim Hamilton said children are often unaware that a tiny flame can grow into a dangerous fire. “Their young age and inexperience with the dangers of fire puts them at high-risk,” he said. “It is important that we teach children an escape plan and practice it frequently. The Brigade Kids Champion Competition is intended to raise awareness of the importance of fire safety amongst children from a young age. “This competition complements our Fire Education Program which aims to reduce the severity of the tragedy and trauma caused by fires that can have lasting effects on children.” Supported by the NSW Department of Education, the Brigade Kids Champion Competition encourages children to create a poster that promotes one of three essential fire safety messages: • Practice your Escape Plan and have a Safe Meeting Place • Get Down Low, and Go, Go, Go • Call Triple Zero (000) in the case of a fire. The Brigade Kids Champions Competition closes on April 23, with entries to be submitted at www.brigadekids.com. Entries will be judged by a panel of representatives from the NSW Department of Education, Association of Independent Schools of NSW, NSW Teachers Federation, Catholic Education Commission NSW, the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, LEGO, Scholastic Australia, Hi-5 and the FRNSW Commissioner. Winners from each category have the opportunity to win an Xbox One from Microsoft, LEGO City packs, and fire safety certificates amongst others.

Devocean pays off in mono race
PORT Macquarie Sailing Club’s race 11 of the Summer series was held on Sunday in a nice little north-easter with a run-out tide that was very strong at the start and eased off as the race progressed. Frank O’Rourke on Dino was first on yardstick in the catamaran division, followed by Gary Powell on Angry Ant who was visiting from Speers Point Sailing Club. Next was Tony Kuhn on Stella, and Rob Barwick on Drift. Jack Corthals on Harpic retired with gear failure. Drift took the handicap win ahead of Angry Ant, Stella, and Dino. Club Commodore Kelly Miller in Devocean won the monohull division on yardstick ahead of Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant. They were only four seconds ahead of third place getter Tony Walker in Deep Purple. Jeff Walsh and Jane Cooper in Big Bang were fourth, ahead of Steve Bohlsen in Splash Dance and Phil and Jake Lillehagen in Elmo. Alice, Grady, and Lizzy McNee in Shearwater did not finish. Deep Purple took the handicap win, ahead of Splashdance, Devocean, Big Bang, Flembouyant, and Elmo. As next weekend is Easter and many people are away or busy, there will be no point score race on Sunday. The informal Easter Cup race will be run for those interested in a sail, starting at 1pm. The following weekend (April 23) is race 12 of the summer series (1pm start). Simon Gandy is rostered on duty. PICTURED: Kelly Miller on Devocean, who won the monohull division on yardstick

THEY say that it is the final score that counts, not how it happened. Congratulations to our Grade 6 and Grade 7 pennant teams who are through to the Sectional play-offs against Zones 1 and 2. Grade 6 lost both games to Kew on the weekend but managed to scrape across the line with a 0.5 margin. Grade 7 had a more comfortable margin, finishing with 39 points, 8.5 points ahead of Port City. Doug Porter and Phil Smith won their Minor Pairs game during the week and move through to the next round. Elaine Sharples, Reg Penney and Charles Duthie were the rink winners on Monday. Lucky losers were Anne and Ken Norberry. Thursday was a washout once again. We are looking at returning to a 9.30 a.m. start on Thursday to allow more time to judge the trend weather-wise. In the event of no play in the morning due to weather, an afternoon triples game commencing at 1 pm will take place, weather permitting. The social bowls on Saturday resulted in Vic Ley and Keith Woods grinners and Graham Fairburn and George Butlin lucky to lose.

Why coaches seldom smile WHO would want to be a rugby league coach! As the old adage goes, the day a rugby league coach is appointed, he is one day closer to being sacked. So far this year NRL season – and remember we are just up to Round 7 – the fans/media have been calling for coaching blood. Jason Taylor (Tigers), Trent Barrett (Manly), Paul McGregor (Dragons) and Des Hasler (Bulldogs) were facing the blowtorch almost as soon as the season kicked off. Yet now, just a few weeks later, both Barrett and McGregor are being touted as club saviours as both teams have hit some stellar form. Meanwhile Hasler has been re-signed for another two seasons. And what about poor Taylor, sacked after just three games into 2017. Then the Tigers thump the Cowboys in Townsville. Was that because Taylor wasn’t there, or an indication of where he had the Tigers headed. The bottom line for the tipster is that any
turmoil within a club has an effect on how the team performs. If there is disquiet over coaching, expect that to translate to on-field performance. The tricky thing is, working out if the rumours are true or not. In the case of the Dogs, Dragons and Sea Eagles, the street-corner experts were off target. OK, tipping a winner is still proving hard yards. It’s Easter weekend. No Thursday game, but there is a Monday clash. Bulldogs v Rabbitohs (Friday, April 14, 4pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Both coming off good wins and both three from six for the season. Even the bookies have this one as being very close. The Dogs have been a little inconsistent this season, but should be more settled after Hasler’s re-signing. However the Rabbits are showing more consistency. They out-pointed the Panthers, but the Dogs will be tougher. • Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs Knights v Roosters (Friday, April 14, 6pm,

• Your Local Independent tips: Storm Raiders v Warriors (Saturday, April 15, 5.30pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): The Raiders were less than perfect against the depleted Titans while the Warriors put the Eels back in their place. You sense that the Raiders are about to find another gear. It’s also in Canberra. • Your Local Independent tips: Raiders Dragons v Cowboys (Saturday, April 15, 7.30pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong): The Cows without JT face a fired-up Dragons outfit in Wollongong. There is every chance the Dragons could put plenty of points on the Queenslanders. St George are now on top of the ladder and are considered real premiership contenders. The Cowboys have depth, but you don’t take JT out of a side to see them improve. • Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Panthers v Sharks (Sunday, April 16, 4pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): Let’s go for the upset. The Sharks deserve favouritism after being the first team to lower Melbourne’s colours this season. However they spent a lot physically and emotionally in that clash. The Panthers have been 14th – 17th April 2017 mis-firing and are due. Home ground Friday 14th April, 4pm, ANZ Stadium is key. Bulldogs vs Rabbitohs • Your Local Independent tips: Friday 14th April, 6pm, McDonald Jones Stadium Panthers Knights vs Roosters Eels v Tigers (Monday, April 17, Friday 14th April 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium 4pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Tigers Broncos vs Titans shelved their concerns with a win over Saturday 15th April, 3pm, Lottoland Sea Eagles vs Storm the Cowboys, but the Eels are another Saturday 15th April, 5.30pm, GIO Stadium team who aren’t far away from getting Raiders vs Warriors it very right. Emotion can only carry Saturday 15th April, 7.30pm, WIN Stadium you for so long and the Tigers bubble Dragons vs Cowboys may not burst, but will deflate a little on Sunday 16th April, 4pm, Pepper Stadium Panthers vs Sharks Easter Monday. Monday 17th April, 4pm, ANZ Stadium • Your Local Independent tips: Eels vs Wests Tigers Eels
McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle): Again, just can’t tip the Knights. The Roosters will be filthy after being stomped by the Broncos. Complacency not a danger. • Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Broncos v Titans (Friday, April 14, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Usually a tough local derby, but the poor old Titans just have too many troops in the sick bay. The Broncos’ win over the Roosters pushed them up into the eight. They may not be at their best after a tough six weeks and with Hunt out of action for up to eight weeks, but the Titans just have too many out. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Sea Eagles v Storm (Saturday, April 15, 3pm, Lottoland, Sydney): I pity Manly. After some very good form they stumbled last week against the Dragons. Then this week they take on a Storm outfit that will be furious after losing the GF replay last weekend. Any loss annoys coach Bellamy. That one would have him seething.
