Communication the key By BARBARA DYER

I am a “natural

problemsolver and love getting my teeth into the issues that are presented to council. I am passionate about justice, and believe in a fair go for all.

AFTER nearly 18 years as a councillor, and with two terms as Deputy Mayor under her belt, Cr Lisa Intemann says she is ready to take on the top job. “Eight weeks after suddenly finding myself in the Mayor’s role, I am enjoying the opportunity immensely,” says the Acting Mayor who will contest the by-election on July 29. Her enthusiasm and energy to lead is palpable, as is her commitment to the region she has called home since 1988. “Problem-solving is one of my major strengths,” says Cr Intemann. “As Acting Mayor, I have had the opportunity to see just how much residents seek out the mayor for a one-on-one. There is much more direct contact and I am finding the role both challenging and fulfilling.” With a degree in science, Cr Intemann has a natural talent for analysis and problem-solving, strengths the Wauchope resident says she will bring to the mayoral role. “I am a natural problem-solver and love getting my teeth into the issues that are presented to council,” she says. “I am passionate about justice, and believe in a fair go for all. “But the best outcomes are those considered with facts and figures.” When Cr Intemann moved to the region from Sydney, she quickly settled into local life working in the community services sector and managing two community information centres before going back to University and, in 2010, completing a research PhD. She has also been a librarian and a TAFE teacher and says it is in her blood to get involved. “I went into council in 1995 because I wanted to make a positive difference in how decisions are made,” says this grandmother of five boys. “That first term was exceptional. Frank Harrison was mayor and, like me, he was a scientist. He was interested in more than finances; he was strong when it came to data and understanding facts and figures. We did a lot of long-term strategic planning and I loved it.” It is her strong and continuous background as a councillor, and her deep sense of community, that Cr Intemann says will hold her in good stead for the leadership role. “My three greatest strengths, I think, are communication, empathy and problem solving,” she says. “I try to deal with every communication within 24 hours, not only because the people who write to council want an answer soonest, but also because providing an accurate answer usually involves getting latest information

Port Macquarie-Hastings mayoral candidate Lisa Intemann from the council staff, which takes time.” She has empathy for ‘battlers’ having seen injustice during her work within the community services sector. “How can we have a fair and just community if we have politicians who are just laughable, or worse? “I know council has critics but by any measure we’re a good council, needing mature continuous improvement. We don’t want either business-as-usual or someone blasting in with no real knowledge of how council works. “The role needs a problem solver; someone

who can see the bigger picture. “I have already raised several proposals for improvement with the General Manager. “I want us to operate more efficiently and deliver on the backlog of issues, using our reserves wisely. “I’m all for efficiency not rate rise. The other councillors are also and I’m keen to lead us forward on this.” Roadworks are a priority and on this and other matters Cr Intemann says she wants to hear from local residents. “I want people to know they will be heard and

treated fairly,” she says. “As a NSW Government designated regional growth centre, Port Macquarie is expecting over 1,000 new residents each year, and this presents both opportunities and risks. “We need to make sure that growth doesn’t destroy the local character and our way of life. We need great strategic planning and people who know me, already know that I’m up for that. “Councillors and staff must work together as a team without in-fighting. “I am offering good constructive leadership. “I want to continue doing my bit for the area.” Cr Intemann said while it would be ‘groundbreaking’ to become the first woman mayor of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, it was important that people voted for a mayor based on the candidate’s merit.

Candidate rejects portfolio comments To be clear if elected, I have no intention to suggest such a thing. Committees are a valuable way to gain an insight into broader opinions of the wider population of our LGA, given that residents and ratepayers of the community are involved in them. The community elected nine individuals to represent their best interests and they should be able to approach any Councillor to discuss any concern they may have and likewise Councillors should be across all relevant issues of Council as part of their elected duties. Finally, in your position as President of the Port Macquarie

Hastings Chamber of Commerce I would have expected you to remove yourself at a personal level from making comments involving a local government election given that the Chamber is an apolitical organisation. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this and other matters further if you are inclined to meet me personally in order to know about my policies and the direction I would like to see Council take should I be elected on 29 July. Peta Pinson Mayoral Candidate

certain people - our Council - fail to perform in their proclaimed duties. You are a fantastic spokesperson for us, the residents, because, as you know, we are rudely ignored when trying to state the obvious faults regarding their decisions. So, your column and paper put those frustrations at ease to know our thoughts are printed on paper for all our Council to see – unless they are blind! I like the way you think and act. Trevor Parsons Dunbogan

during the course of the general discussion. I did not then and do not now agree that Councillors need to represent a certain section of the community through a portfolio. This is local government not state or federal politics where Ministers are given portfolios. I think this system may have been introduced as a result of the prior Mayor’s time in state government. Your assumption that I wish to abolish the 13 committees that represent the community interests are unfounded and just that - an assumption.

THIS is an open letter to Mr Haydn Oriti (President, Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce) in response to his article in the July edition of Focus Magazine, in particular comments made about me concerning the Council portfolio system. I was disappointed to read that you had said that you had asked me a question during the “Meet the Candidates” in relation to this system. Haydn, you have never asked me a question at any event about anything, and, if fact whenever our paths cross we have not spoken. I offered the attendees at the forum my views on the portfolio system

THE NSW Government, having dealt with the electricity assets, is now flush with funds for worthwhile investment in non-urban areas. This makes it even more important that the new Mayor of Port MacquarieHastings establish a constructive and apolitical relationship with the Local Member. Leslie Williams, MP has recently identified a few of her priorities for the Port Macquarie electorate noting that many are in the jurisdiction of

local government. Those priorities include “a community education centre for Port Macquarie, a tidal pool, development and improvement of the Food for Less car park in Port Macquarie, an Orbital Road, safer pathways in the Camden Haven and a revetment wall at Lake Cathie, and work to commence on the upgrade of Ocean Drive despite cost increases.” What do the Mayoral candidates have to say about these projects? I’M starting to think the fluoride they’re adding to the water is having some effect. Either that or I’m stuck in some weird modern-day version of the Emperor’s New Clothes and no-one else has noticed! Early last week my phone started ringing off the hook with the appearance of election material on Crown/Council land on Ocean Drive. I directed all callers to the candidates, Council or if necessary the Electoral Commission. You know, go through the appropriate channels. Then came the photos! Seriously! Apart from the fact that you can’t use Council or Crown owned land for electioneering – the material was not authorised as per the legal requirements for an election campaign! Un-bloodybelievable! The offending material was whisked away overnight and needs to either be re-printed or have stickers with the relevant details attached. A lot of you might say, ‘Who cares!’ I think you should all care. You see, if we don’t care about the small rules being broken – during the campaign period – you are leaving the door wide open for a flood of untruths and broken rules. If you want good publicity do the right thing, know your stuff and run a professional campaign! Council hears airport fears By SUE PATERICK KEMPSEY Shire Council held three public meetings last week where 142 residents were able to voice their concerns over the Australian International Aviation College’s Development Application to dramatically expand its operations at Kempsey Airport. The well-attended meetings resulted after the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel (NJRPP) moved to defer the proposed airport expansion back in March, swayed by many issues the community had raised. When registering prior to each meeting this month participants were asked to pick a day and time from three choices and list at least three questions they had about the airport expansion. After reading a handout distributed among the 50 participants at the July 7 meeting, it seemed the many issues that concerned local residents in March were still the same now. A major concern was the sheer number of planes proposed in the Development Application (DA), which would see about 28,000 flights per year by 2018, flying seven days a week from 6am to midnight. If you divide 28,000 flights by 365 days this gives you a figure of 76 flights a day. Other issues included a perceived lack of transparency and community consultation from Council, concerns that the noise assessment was superficial and inadequate, concerns over economic data in the DA, and the impact on the peaceful life people have built here. Possible pollution from aviation fuel to drinking and irrigation water and soil were also concerns, as were health issues, social ramifications, traffic safety, invasion of privacy and who owns the airport. Undisclosed financial arrangements with the company, the dropping of real estate values and building plans that take up the 20 private hangar

Participants at one of the three public meetings held by Kempsey Shire Council last week where a total of 142 residents were able to voice their concerns over the Australian International Aviation College’s Development Application to dramatically expand its operations at Kempsey Airport spaces built with a $2.5 million grant from the Australian Government were other concerns. At the meeting Council also distributed a Kempsey Airport Presentation, which listed an overview of financial information, a Mid North Coast Aviation Excellence Plan for 2011, mention of the MOU but not the document itself, expected benefits of the Australian Intenational Aviation College’s (AIAC) expansion, a brief on the flying school’s current DA, and an outline of a Fly Neighbourly Agreement (FNA). Participants were then asked to write down some questions and a speaker from each table read them out. Final questions were asked from each table before the meeting concluded.

One speaker against the airport claimed there had been a near-miss involving an aircraft and his house. Another spoke of the droning noise that has taken away his peaceful life. Another wondered if Council and the AIAC had considered the cost of a class action? Yet another wanted to know how soil and water contamination will affect his organic certification and others in the Macleay Valley? Someone else told of the significant increase in traffic and near misses on the airport road, plus the road’s subsequent deterioration. Councillors Bruce Morris and Leo Hauville were present as well as Council staff and two representatives from the AIAC - its Head of

Flight Operations Kevin McMurtrie and Engineering Manager Doug Bollard. The upshot of the meeting was that Council staff committed to documenting the feedback from the meeting and reporting it to Council as part of the community consultation required for the preparation of a Fly Neighbourly Agreement for all Kempsey Airport users. Council’s Director of Sustainable Development Robert Pitt said that after the public meetings a report will go to Council to document the community concerns and identify whether they can be addressed in the Fly Neighbourly Agreement or through other legislative means. “Part of the process will need to look at the whole area, including agricultural uses,” Mr Pitt said. There will also be maps made of the flight path circuit and outlines of how that will be managed as part of the Noise Management Plan that supports the Fly Neighbourly Agreement. When asked if Council would put together a public committee to be a part of this process, Mr Pitt said that the draft Fly Neighbourly Agreement that goes back to the community will propose whether an ongoing Airport Consultative Group or focus groups could be included. A resident then wanted the final draft solution brought back to a public forum. Another wondered if the proposed AIAC flights numbers would negate the FNA, but Mr Pitt said Council has an option to enforce the Fly Neighbourly Agreement by making it a condition of the lease for the flying college. A concerned resident then stated that the noise was impossible now and asked how it was possible to have a FNA?

Increased Development at Lake Cathie Puts Pressure on Ocean Drive – “It’s Time to Act” says Pinson Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has given the green light to a number of significant developments in the Lake Cathie area such as Ocean Club Resort, Seawide Estate, Catarina Estate and the soon to be developed aged care facility where the Lake Cathie motel now stands. Obviously, this is as a result of the Port Macquarie-Hastings area boom and is a great thing for jobs in the area. However, with this growth comes a problem with the current surrounding infrastructure. The road network through the Lake Cathie village from Fiona Crescent intersection southbound has not received any rehabilitation since it was first laid decades ago. Developers of these areas have made substantial contributions to Council for these areas and the time is now to upgrade this vital section of road which is soon to be carrying in excess of 10,000 vehicles per day. Developer contributions are a funding mechanism available to Councils that permit the levying of funds (typically a monetary contribution or dedication of land) from developers to provide extra, or upgrade existing public amenities, facilities or infrastructure that will be required to meet the demand created by the additional development. Collected contributions funds are used by Council to provide public amenities or public services, including: • public open space, • public road network, • water supply and sewerage networks, • community facilities, and; • public car-parking facilities, Council levies developer contributions under section 94 and section 94A of the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 and Section 64 of the Local Government Act 1993. Should I be elected as Mayor I will be questioning why this road network has not yet been addressed given the recent development and section 94 contributions and will be proactive in working towards the upgrade of this section of road to happen through Councils rolling works program.

I welcome your comments about what is important to you and can be emailed at pinson4mayor@gmail.com or contact my office on 6585 2519. Written and Authorised by Peta Pinson, 39 Commerce Street, Wauchope NSW 2446

Author’s ‘baby’ a tribute to midwives By BARBARA DYER IT has been almost 40 years since the story was conceived, but local author and historian Dr Noeline Kyle is ready to deliver her latest baby. Women’s Business: Midwives on the Mid North Coast is a comprehensive and fascinating look at the women who delivered every baby born in the regions bordered by Armidale, Kempsey/Macleay Valley and Port Macquarie/ Hastings up to 1950. The Lake Cathie resident says her book gives insight into their training, careers, family life, travel between towns and villages, friendships with other midwives and nurses; their contribution to the community and their business acumen. “Because these women were, ultimately, business people,” the author explains. “This was in the days when women essentially had a choice of only a few careers, with teaching and nursing or midwifery the major ones. “To work as a nurse in hospital meant to remain single – or marry in secret. Midwives, on the other hand, had a choice. “Back then, midwifery was small business and these women advertised in every local paper looking for work.” Dr Kyle’s research began when she was delving into her own history to write a biography of her great grandmother, Nurse Mary Kirkpatrick, who became known simply as ‘Nurse Kirk’. (Memories & Dreams: a biography of Nurse Mary Kirkpatrick.) “My great grandmother set up the first maternity hospital in Kempsey,” says Dr Kyle. Having delivered papers on how to make history both accessible and interesting, the retired university professor has set out to do just that in her latest book. “Although I am a historian, I am more likely to attend a writing festival than an academic conference,” she says. As a writer, she says she ‘fills in the gaps’ with narrative, but admits the research into the midwives of the Mid North Coast was ‘hard’. “I would access the state records and take

out about 20 probates at a time looking for links to family in the local area,” she says. “Many of the midwives worked into their

70s and 80s and many remained single (and, ironically, childless). “They were very collegial, mobile and resourceful, advertising and looking for work all the time. “For this reason, newspapers have been a rich source of information but I have had a few descendants contact me and that gave me some really nice stories with family photos a bonus.” Through hours of extensive research, Dr Kyle was able to ‘map’ the movements of midwives as they moved around the region from Port Macquarie to Armidale. “They set up maternity hospitals, often working from rented properties and utilising large verandas for hospital beds,” she says. “My book looks at the role of some 200 midwives in the community up to 1950; their contribution to the profession and the 70 hospitals that they established or managed. “Many decades since, they are still remembered in these country communities.” Among the stories is one of Hastings district midwife Ann Reid whose daughter-in-law Mary

• NOELINE Kyle, above, has a prestigious heritage, descended from arguably the region’s most famous midwife, her great grandmother Mary Kirkpatrick who, with husband David, migrated from Belfast in 1884. Dr Kyle is also the niece of Australian country music legend Slim Dusty. By the time Mary Kirkpatrick had arrived in Kempsey in the late 1890s, she had separated from her husband, becoming a single parent to sons David and George. In order to support her sons, Mary trained as a midwife and ‘Nurse Kirk’ opened the first private maternity hospital in the district, in Kempsey in the early 1900s. Her eldest son David Gordon Kirkpatrick married Mary Partridge, and three daughters and a son were born during the Great War years. Their most famous son, though, was born last, on June 13, 1927. He was also named David Gordon Kirkpatrick, but later would to become known as country music legend Slim Dusty. The young Kirkpatrick family lived next door to the large Kyle family in the close-knit farming community of the Nulla Nulla Creek in the Macleay Valley near Kempsey. The neighbours were best friends and later became family, when two of the Fitzpatrick siblings married two of the Kyle siblings. Slim Dusty’s sister Kathleen Fitzpatrick married Lawrie Kyle - author Noeline Kyle’s mother and father. “Slim’s wife Joy McKean is one of my favourite aunts,” says Noeline. Appropriately, the launch of Women’s Business: Midwives on the Mid North Coast will be held at the Slim Dusty Centre in South Kempsey this Saturday at 10.30am. Books will be on sale and all are welcome to the launch and book signing by the author, with refreshments available.

Louisa Reid opened a hospital at Flagstaff House in Port Macquarie. Dr Kyle ‘retired’ from academia in 2001 but, it seems, she has never been busier and continues to research and write women’s history as an Honorary Professor at the University of Sydney. She is also an enthusiastic mentor for others who want to research local and family history through workshops, publications and her webpage, writingfamilyhistory.

Giving is in Chris’s blood By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

LOCAL Chris Roberts is a real lifesaver. In fact he has saved more than 700 lives over the past 52 years. When Chris was 19 he came across a blood bank in central Sydney and since then he has made it his mission to give as much blood as he could for as long as he could. “That’s 52 years ago and I’ve only ever missed (giving blood) once and that was because I forgot!” said Chris. Chris has lived in over 10 different places in NSW in both the country and the city working as a school teacher, but he always made sure he donated blood no matter where he was located. “Irrespective of where I lived in NSW or what my work or family commitments were, I have donated every three months,” Chris said. “I’ve lived in the city and the country of NSW and I’ve also donated in Queensland, Victoria, and I’ve even donated when I was on holidays in Greece.” Donating blood may not seem like the most enjoyable experience, but Chris says it’s quick, easy, professional, and rewarding. “No matter where I gave blood, each visit followed the familiar routine of filling out forms, having an interview, small blood sample, blood pressure check and a cross check of details for accuracy,” explained Chris. “One small prick with a needle and six minutes later 475 millilitres of lifesaving blood is in the bag, sealed and labelled – ready to save a life. A quick drink and bite to eat and I’m refueled for the rest of my day. “You can only donate four times a year and I’ve done that and I’m still healthy and I’m going to keep donating while possible. It’s been a long time donating and I’ve never had any major problems afterwards because they are very strict on the procedure.

Left: Chris Roberts has donated blood 232 times in more than 50 years which has helped save around 700 lives

“It takes about 10 minutes to donate and then you have a cup of tea and something to eat afterwards so the whole process would take half an hour to 45 minutes, at the most.” Chris’s lifesaving blood has assisted more than 700 people who required blood transfusions and he urges others to get involved. “They (the Australian Red Cross Blood

Service) tell you that your donation helps three people, so technically I’ve helped over 700 people,” said Chris. “I try to tell people about donating. I don’t think they realise how easy it is. It doesn’t take long, it doesn’t hurt much. There are strict guidelines. If you’re not healthy, you’re not allowed to donate.

“You’ve got to stop donating blood when you’re 81 and I’m 70 so if I’m able, I’m going to donate for another 11 years. I’ve never had any major accidents or illnesses so I’ve just been lucky enough to be able to donate every 3 months for 52 years.” Chris is passionate about blood banks being available to everyone and has even written letters to ask the blood bank to increase their services to country areas. “Only three per cent of the population donate blood and anyone aged 16 to 81 can donate blood,” Chris said. “Most people need a blood product in their lifetime if they get sick or are in a car accident so it’s very important that people donate. “Last year I turned 70 and missed my first appointment; because I forgot! Over the years I have tried to remain as healthy and accidentfree as possible between donations. As of March 2017, I had given 232 whole blood donations or 108 litres of blood. As far as I know, I have donated more whole blood than anyone in the Port Macquarie area.” At a recent blood bank function Chris was awarded a certificate for his commitment to giving blood. To find out more about donating blood and your local blood bank visit http://www. donateblood.com.au Port Macquarie’s Donor Centre is located on 14/6 Clarence Street.

Advertorial

Local radio host keeps

Tracks on his guests

COMMUNITY radio station 2WAYFM announcer John Shearer hosts a weekly show called Tropical Island Tracks each Thursday at 10.30am. Over the last couple of months, guests have included Rob Oakeshott, Gerry Byron, Sandy Mackenzie and Luke Hartsuyker, just to name a few. Originally the show was going to run for 12 weeks, but the feedback has encouraged John to continue presenting the show. There is an eclectic mix of guests in the coming months, including Karen Roberts from U3A, State MP for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, local queen of Pin-Up, Dale Velvet Rose and Jeff Walsh who is a descendant of an original Port Macquarie family. Each Tropical Island Tracks guest is asked to provide five or six musical pieces (songs/tracks) they would like to take with them should they be stranded on a deserted island or in the bush. They also have to consider some other items they would deem necessary to take with them and why. Without being invasive, the idea is to find out more of the ‘who, how, what and why’ of the guests who play such a role in the structure and fabric of the community. John said: “It has been a lot of fun doing the show each week. You find out a lot about a person through their taste in music. “There is a lifetime of memories attached to music and it speaks to each of us in different ways.” Tune in to 2WAYFM 103.9 each Thursday at 10.30am and find out a bit more about some of the locals in our community. Seniors receive energy savings HELPING SENIORS WITH THE COST OF LIVING: The NSW Government has secured a two-year deal with one of Australia’s biggest energy suppliers, creating savings of up to 25 per cent for seniors in our community on their gas and electricity usage charges. Minister for Ageing Tanya Davies recently announced the renewed commitment from energy retailer AGL, which began offering new discounts to NSW Seniors Card members from July 1. The NSW Government had been working hard to secure these competitive discounts for seniors. Older people have worked hard all their lives and given so much to their communities, so I am pleased to see the renewal of this partnership that eases the cost of living pressures for them. AGL will offer Seniors Card members a 25 per cent guaranteed discount off electricity usage and 19 per cent guaranteed discount off gas usage charges on a two-year energy plan. Given we are now well and truly into winter, the timing of this renewal could not be better. We know every dollar counts for seniors. Our community functions better, is more inclusive and effective, thanks to the contributions made by older people. When they are active and involved in community life, everyone benefits.

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

IN an electorate like ours where there is a significant portion of older Australians, there is strong demand for Aged Care services. I certainly recognise the need to continue to invest in our Aged Care services to ensure that they’re readily available for those who need them. The Federal Government is committed to supporting older Australians and I will continue to ensure this commitment is maintained locally. This funding will allow Home Nursing Group to employ more local people and expand their Aged Care services available to local Port Macquarie clients. Not only will this funding allow Home Nursing Group to take on more Port Macquarie locals on top of the almost 300 they currently service, but it will also see a greater range of services provided as they plan to include in-home Occupational Therapy in their portfolio. These additional services will mean more local jobs, a boost to our local economy and healthier, happier locals. Home Nursing Group will be using these funds to hire Occupational Therapists who will assist locals to overcome obstacles which may be already in their homes. These occupational therapists can assess these difficulties and put processes in place to help the client overcome these hurdles.

Centuries-old word is not just ‘a guy thing’

DOES the word guy refer to women as well as men? Maybe it once referred to men only, but in my opinion it now refers to women as well as men. A lot of publicity has been given lately to the question of whether guy can refer to women as well as men. I don’t know how the subject reached the news columns, but it obviously started with somebody who had little else to do. The American Heritage Dictionaries editors say in their book Word Histories And Mysteries that the word is used for “a group of persons of either sex”, Wilfred Funk says the word is used as “a synonym for an individual”, several dictionaries use the word for “fellow”. Fellow can refer to women. Wikipedia says it can generally refer to people of either gender and I can quote myself as saying in a column piece 21 years ago that guy applies equally to women as well as men. I found a few other sites that said words have the meanings that usage gives them. I can understand this. I have found that words are constantly changing in their meaning. Quora said guys was gender-neutral. (Gender, that should mean sex, is covered in another column). Admittedly, some old dictionaries said that the word guys refers only to men, but

my

LAURIE BARBER

these dictionaries are gradually changing their definitions. Most dictionaries said guys covered persons of grotesque appearance, but I know this is not always the case. Don’t blame me. I’m just quoting the books. President Bush, the earlier one, once called the president of Jordan a guy and got away with it. I think guy was a hangover from the time of Guy Fawkes. Do you remember the case of Guy Fawkes? Guy Fawkes, also known as Guido Fawkes, was born in York in 1570 into a Protestant family but later converted to Catholicism. He fought for many years war on the side of Catholic Spain in what was called the Eighty Years War. Then, because of his knowledge of gunpowder, he was conscripted by a group of

English Catholics to blow up the Houses of Parliament and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. But he was discovered and he leapt to his death to escape being drawn and quartered. He was 35 years old. Since then November 5 was commemorated and, in Britain at least, his effigy was burned on a bonfire and usually this was accompanied by a fireworks display. These effigies came to be referred to as guys. Some people didn’t like Guy Fawkes and this was why Guy was regarded as a person of grotesque appearance. Some dictionaries use the word odd. Guy Fawkes Day was sometimes referred to as Pope Day. Guy has many other uses For instance, running away, to direct the course of a vehicle, to command an army, to manage an office, to direct as person in his actions. Guy was in use a couple of hundred years before Guy Fawkes was born. It had many meanings, including a leader, a rope used to lower something, or a suspension bridge. I have found it in use in print in 1350, but Guy Fawkes wasn’t born until 1570. The guy I am referring to seems to have been Spanish in origin. But I like the bit about an office manager being referred to as a guy. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Funds a win-win for home nursing LOCAL aged care service Home Nursing Group has welcomed $1 million in new Federal Government funding, saying it will allow them to expand their services for residents of the Mid North Coast. Gorm Kirsch, owner and managing director of Home Nursing Group, said the funding boost was a win-win for the region and older residents. Mr Kirsch was speaking after the news was delivered by National Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker, at the Port Macquarie Senior Citizens Centre. “This makes it easier for people to stay in their homes longer, to enjoy the retirement they deserve,” Mr Kirsch said. “Not everyone chooses to go into a nursing home. “Most of us want to end our lives in our own homes surrounded by the family and things we love. “With this $1 million funding, we can offer more choice for our clients in their own homes, including in retirement villages. “We will also be able to introduce occupational therapy to our list of services, with the hope of preventing accidents in the home. “And we can also help with home modifications where required. “We will also have a real focus on palliative care, which will help families caring for their loved ones at home. “Ultimately, this funding will be used to ensure people are able to stay safe and comfortable, in their homes with familiar surroundings, while maintaining a high level of choice, control and

National Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker, left, with Gorm Kirsch, owner and managing director of Home Nursing Group independence.” Mr Kirsch added his Home Nursing Group was passionate that ‘home is where the heart is’. “We’re incredibly proud to have been awarded this funding, which will help us to continue supporting the most vulnerable within our communities,” Mr Kirsch said. “It means we can offer a greater level of

comfort and care for older people, enabling them to stay safe and comfortable, in familiar surroundings, while maintaining a high level of choice, control and independence.” Making the announcement, MP Mr Hartsuyker said it was a welcome investment in the Port Macquarie region. “This $1 million will help people on the

Mid North Coast from Port Macquarie to Coffs Harbour, to stay living in their own homes as long as possible, throughout their retirement or latter years,” he said. “About two-thirds of the funding will come to the Port Macquarie-Hasting Council area. “In an electorate like ours, there is strong demand for aged care services for older Australians. “This funding for Home Nursing Group will support about 300 older Australians in the Port Macquarie community.” He said the funding would also benefit younger people through employment opportunities. “This funding will allow Home Nursing Group to employ more local people,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “It will be put toward expanding their allied health, therapy services and flexible respite services as well as occupational therapy which was not previously available as part of their inhome care services. “It is, however, a critical component of keeping older people safe and healthy in the homes they love. “These additional services will mean more local jobs, a boost to our local economy and healthier, happier locals.” Home Nursing Group supports more than 1,000 older people at home in 21 local communities in Northern NSW, covering the Mid North Coast between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour, as well as the New England North West region.

Preferential vote is key SATURDAY, July 29, 2017, sees the Port Macquarie Hastings voters go back to the polls to elect a new mayor due to the resignation of Peter Besseling, just months after he was re-elected in the September, 2016, local government elections. This by-election is set to cost ratepayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some say, as much as $400,000. Five candidates have put their hand up to take on the role of mayor including three sitting councillors and two previously unelected, but not first-time candidates. In this upcoming election we have a preferential voting system in play. Voters can vote for more than one candidate if they wish, sequentially, 1 through and up to all 5 candidates - or stopping at any number in between. Provided voters put at least a 1 in the box of one candidate, the vote card is valid. If the voters’ chosen candidate does not get elected and they only vote 1, then that vote card is exhausted and not passed on to another candidate. Some voters will opt for choosing a second or third candidates by placing a 2 and 3 in the respective boxes, just in case their first or second choice candidate(s) fails to progress through the vote counts. Whichever candidate has the least amount of first preference votes after all the number 1 votes have been counted, will be eliminated from the race. Any of that first eliminated candidate’s voting

The Rinse Cycle By Adam Roberts - Former Councillor, Port MacquarieHastings Council

cards that have a number 2 on them will be transferred to the candidate whose box is marked with that 2, thus becoming a vote for that second preferred candidate. After another count including the number 2 marked cards, the candidate with the lowest vote count is eliminated and the preferences will transfer again. This general process repeats until there is an eventual winner. Some candidates run in an election simply to help ‘pass on’ any preferences to another candidate. For example, Turner, Intemann and Edwards in my experience - all have a strong leaning to the left side of politics and it would be no surprise to see their ‘how to vote flyer’ suggest keeping preferences to those candidates. Pinson and Griffiths are the clear conservative candidates in this election. Remembering, voters do not have to follow a candidates’ ‘how to vote flyer’ and it’s good to understand the candidates’ stand on issues important to the voter.

Taking a surface-level look at the candidates in this election - we have current deputy mayor Lisa Intemann, a sitting councillor. There was a query over Rob Turners’ eligibility as a candidate with Turner having tendered his resignation (as a councillor), which was receipted in writing by the council’s General Manager. He then ‘un-resigned’, which is currently the subject of an urgent request for an adjudication from the State Government. Conservative candidate Peta Pinson comes under notice with a strong business background and a very impressive showing in the last mayoral election, securing around 30% of the primary vote. An excellent result for a first-time candidate. Electing Pinson would no doubt shake things up and would not force another election – thus saving the ratepayers another possible $400,000 bill. Sharon Griffiths is currently a councillor with a solid track record of standing up for the community and voting accordingly in the chamber over nearly five years. Griffiths registered solid support as a councillor candidate in the last election and had some handy votes in the mayoral election. Lauren Edwards is a candidate for The Greens in a vastly conservative electorate. Summing up, if either Turner, Griffiths or Intemann is elected as mayor, it will force another by-election within 3 months of this upcoming election.

Health services to be boosted RESIDENTS along the Mid North Coast are set to benefit from increased and improved health services into the future as a result of significant funding from the Coalition Government being directed towards rural and regional health. In my role as Federal Assistant Minister for Health, I have made two extremely important policy announcements over the past week which will support young health professionals to stay in rural and regional areas. The first is a new scholarship scheme which will provide financial support to GPs, nurses, dentists or allied health professionals to increase their skills and capabilities. The program which will be administered by a consortium of Rural Workforce Agencies will, for the first time, be allocated based on the needs of communities. The $33m program will, for the first time, prioritise existing postgraduate professionals over undergraduates with the aim of upskilling them to provide greater access to health services for regional, rural and remote communities across Australia. Secondly, I announced around $3m in additional funding to support the establishment of the Mid North Coast Regional Training Hubs which will provide young doctors the ability to stay, study, work and live in the area.

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

In conjunction with UNSW and the Universities of Newcastle and Wollongong, the Coalition Government is seeking to provide a career pathway for junior doctors wishing to train as Rural Generalists and deliver the specialised procedural skills training that is critical to ensuring the health of residents and visitors of the Mid North Coast. With an ever-growing population across the region placing increased strain upon services, these policies underline the commitment of the Coalition Government to deliver greater access to improved health services. Finally, as Federal Parliament breaks for the winter recess it provides me with a great opportunity to get around the electorate and see as many of you as possible. If you happen to see me please don’t hesitate to come up and say ‘hello’.

There’s a chill in the air, might be time to think about winterising your pool!

Bowel disease info night By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

INFLAMMATORY bowel disease sufferers are not alone. Members from the community and their families affected by Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis are invited to an information evening hosted by Port Macquarie Gastroenterology and Endoscopy. “These diseases are very prevalent in the Port Macquarie region and are becoming more and more obvious,” said Clyte May, Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Port Macquarie Gastroenterology and Endoscopy. “In just one practice alone we have at least 150 patients just for those two diseases.” Clyte says that people suffering from these diseases often feel alone and sometimes even avoid seeking treatment. “These diseases are not exactly easy to talk about because they are all around their bowels and their bowel motions and their tummy, so they are not things that are easily spoken about,” Clyte explained. “They are the diseases that don’t get a lot of attention in regards to public fundraising events like some of the other diseases do. “A lot of these patients suffer in silence to a great extent until they come and see their health professional, either myself or one of the doctors.” The night will be an informative evening allowing for many question and answer opportunities with Gastroenterologist Dr Stuart Kostalas, Clinical Nurse Specialist Clyte May, Dietitian Emma Schwartzkoff and guest Gastroenterologist Dr Praka Sundaralingam . “They can sit and have a chat with some of the patients in a very non-confronting and non-intimidating area and they also get easy access to myself, a dietitian and a couple of gastroenterologists,” Clyte said. “It will be very

much a question and answer forum so they can fire any burning questions or niggling concerns at us. “The night is there for education and so that they are really informed about the disease and the nature of it, the management strategies that

are out there that are available, the ones that have always been there that we have just developed, or new ones that are coming out very shortly. “So its just making it so that they actually have a big say from a point of knowledge in the management of their own disease and their

life and it makes a big difference to not just their disease and how well controlled it is, but hopefully get them into remission for as long as possible, but their quality of life is impacted hugely.” Clyte says that it is important that these diseases are made more aware in communities as it can put huge stress not just on the patient, but for their families too. “There are new treatments actually and there’s always new treatments for these diseases because they are so debilitating and they’re life long, they are chronic, there’s no cure for these diseases,” said Clyte. “There’s lots of research going into it, but mainly overseas because overseas governments give more money for research. “These diseases can impact the whole family if someone can’t work or can’t travel or can’t go out because they need to be near a toilet or they’re constantly in pain or needing to go to hospital all the time. So that has an impact on everyone around them.” The patient information meeting will be held on August 3 from 6.30pm in the Rushcutter Room at the Panthers, Port Macquarie. Family and loved ones are welcomed. Light refreshments will be served. This is a free event, however please register your intention to attend by emailing Clyte at clytemay@yahoo. com.au

Birds flock to tranquil Teal Lagoon

Responding to audience demand for rich and engaging stories and the industry’s concern about the lack of diversity in the Australian screen sector, Talent Camp provides an opportunity for new talent, new perspectives and new voices that reflect the richness and depth of contemporary Australian society. The week-long Talent Camp, focusing on story development, screen producing and career pathways, will be delivered in Sydney between September 18- 22 by industry experts. including renowned producer Kath Shelper and story developer Brita McVeigh. For more information and to apply visit www.aftrs.edu.au/talentcamp. The deadline for applications is 9am, July 17.

By SUE PATERICK NOT even the flap of a bird wing can destroy the tranquillity of the Boyters Lane Information Hut, Bird Hide and Boardwalk at South West Rocks. In fact, the numerous birds that call Teal Lagoon home or drop in during their migration are the main attraction of this charming local facility that overlooks the reflective wetlands. Teal Lagoon is an important birdwatching site and flocks of birds have been sighted there - eagles, falcons, cranes, purple swamphens, ducks, quail, cormorants, herons, grebes, doves, pigeons, larks, fantails, finches, wrens, thornbills, honeyeaters and many more. The wetlands are a complex ecosystem where land and water environments meet and include swamps, marshes, billabongs, lakes, salt marshes, mudflats and mangroves. Past members of the Rotary Club of South West Rocks, Diana and Roger Gammon, remember the idea for Teal Lagoon began when Kempsey Shire Council was looking to expand sports facilities in South West Rocks and the Boyters Lane area was being considered. In response to concern about nutrients running off the proposed sports fields into the Macleay River, the Rotary Club applied for a grant to build an artificial wetland. When the sports field idea in Boyters Lane was

SMALL businesses throughout Cowper are set for simpler Business Activity Statements (BAS), an extension to the instant asset write-off program and the opportunity to opt in to the single-touch payroll thanks to positive changes now in force. Nationals Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker is excited about the potential impact that this will have for small businesses in the region. “Local small businesses are set to benefit from simpler paperwork and yet another year to use the instant asset write-off program,” Mr Hartsuyker said.“Reporting wages, Pay-AsYou-Go (PAYG) accounts withholding and superannuation information to the Australian Taxation Office can also be very timeconsuming for small business, so I know many small business owners will take advantage of opting into the single-touch payroll.” For more information, visit www.business. gov.au/smallbusiness

Cara contender for award By BARBARA DYER

If I was to be named a finalist at the NSW Telstra Business Women’s Award, it would be great recognition for our team

WHETHER applying for a government grant to help a small sporting club or working with local councils to find cost savings, Lake Cathie business consultant Cara Dale is in her element. She has recently been nominated for a NSW Telstra Business Women’s Award and will be a worthy contender. In her efforts to secure millions of dollars in funding on behalf of schools, councils, business and non-profit organisations, this former business banking manager who heads up C2Hills Consultancy, leaves no stone unturned. It is these successes at state and local level that makes Cara a candidate for the NSW Telstra Business Women’s Award. “C2Hills Consultancy specialises in helping to grow business through researching grants, completing grant and project applications, drawing up plans and liaising with industry representatives and government departments,” she says. “I think my strengths are thinking outside the square and bringing sides together.” “I like to provide solutions to long-term issues and just love being thrown a curved ball. “I have been lucky to work with various councils who have trusted me to turn everything upside down to find a solution.” C2Hills Consultancy has a team of five consultants, with three NSW and federal lobbyists and are approved Export Market Development Grant consultants with Austrade. “We provide a voice for regional projects across the state and have secured tenders for a number of businesses and community facilities locally,” says Cara. These have included $460,000 in grants for Wauchope Show Grounds to refurbish the underground power supply and remove ageing

Cara Dale, with her 10-year-old daughter Christa. Cara has recently been nominated for a NSW Telstra Business Women’s Award. power poles, as well as paying for pavilion upgrades, footpaths and other infrastructure. C2Hills also put in grant applications to allow

the Camden Haven Showgrounds to build a new laundry and North Haven Public School to finance robotics and playground upgrades.

“We also helped local businesses source funding for marketing and growth opportunities and numerous sporting clubs win smaller grants for equipment and sponsorship for elite sportspeople,” says Cara. The work of C2Hills has been as diverse as arranging diploma level training when it was not available locally, to consulting on large scale infrastructure. “One project to build a new dual lane bridge in Carrathool had languished for more than 20 years but we stepped in and full funding was given in less than 10 months,” says Cara. Nothing is too tricky for this driven and passionate businesswoman. “If I was to be named a finalist at the NSW Telstra Business Women’s Award, it would be great recognition for our team, but I would invite some of the clients we have worked with on significant positive projects around NSW to share the accolade,” she says.

This can only be achieved with them by having regular interaction and / or access to your SMSF financial information through online platforms. This will enable your accountant to help you make decisions based on current information and is critical to avoid costly mistakes when it comes to contribution caps and pension limits. 5. Relationships matter It’s your accountant’s responsibility to make an important contribution to your SMSF’s growth, but if you don’t trust them, or feel comfortable talking frankly and openly with them, you won’t be able to take full advantage or optimise the benefits of running your SMSF. Your SMSF accountant should be a trusted partner who is also able to provide licenced advice and constructive support as you run your SMSF. If that’s not an accurate description of your relationship, it’s time to ask why. “A SMSF Specialist Accountant who is licenced to provide you with financial advice surrounding your retirement will enable you to understand the rules, provide efficiencies in the administration and compliance for an affordable cost that you can control, and ultimately provide you with strategies that optimise the benefits of a SMSF effectively allowing you to reach your financial retirement goals.” Disclaimer The contents above is current at time of print and is intended as general news and not advice, as each taxpayers situation will vary depending on the specific circumstances relating to that taxpayer. Professional legal or Accounting advice should be sought on how these measures relate to you and your circumstances.

Kempsey seeks new GM STAFF at Kempsey Shire Council were recently advised that General Manager David Rawlings, will be leaving the organisation after eight years at the helm. The decision was made following an Extraordinary meeting of Council. Mr Rawlings is now on leave and Council’s Director Corporate Management, Daryl Hagger, has been appointed Acting General Manager while the recruitment process for Mr Rawlings’ replacement is carried out. Mayor Liz Campbell thanked Mr Rawlings for his valuable contribution to the organisation and community. “This Council and our community have benefitted greatly from the experience and leadership David has provided over many years, particularly in addressing the significant loans borrowings and debts council was carrying when he commenced. “Councillors have identified the need to undertake significant change within the organisation, particularly in relation to the culture and our vision for future projects and services. “We have agreed that it is time for

a fresh leadership approach in order to move the organisation in a new direction,” said Mayor Campbell. In a message to staff Mr Rawlings explained his decision and acknowledged the hard work of many people to provide outcomes for the community. “I’ve worked with the Council to come to this decision and having been in the role for eight years. It’s the right time for change. “For my career and the life stage of my family, this is the most appropriate time for me to seek new opportunities and allow space for Council to operate in a new way,” said Mr Rawlings. Recruitment of a new General Manager is expected to take a number of months. “Just recently, Council adopted an ambitious Delivery Program, focused around significant investment in our economic and social growth over the next four years,” said Cr Campbell. “I want to assure the community that delivering on the things we have outlined for the future is the highest priority for this Council.”

River Rats ‘paddle’ to far north THE Kempsey Macleay Dragon Boat Club decided to go north last month to escape the rain and cold and ended up in Kununurra - about a 9-hour drive south west of Darwin. Fifteen members left Sydney to fly to Darwin and spent a week sightseeing before flying onto Kununurra to participate in the 55-km Ord River Marathon. Kununurra Dragon Boat Club hosted the event with a welcome dinner the night before. The next morning was an early start with buses transporting paddlers to the starting line at Lake Argyle where breakfast was provided. Teams consisted of 14 paddlers and a sweep (steerer). Aluminium boats were allocated to all teams and everyone was off and paddling. A powered support boat carried each team’s non-paddling friends and often stopped to take photos.

The adventure was split into four legs with drinks and tucker provided by a support road crew after each leg. Kick off was about 7am and finished at 5pm. The first leg was the most interesting as crews had to wind their way through spectacular gorges and over rapids before the river opened up. It was estimated that each paddler paddled a total of about 20,000 strokes to complete the course. While this was not a race but more of a sightseeing endurance paddle, the Rats couldn’t help themselves and ensured that they were first to cross the finish line. The day ended with a celebration drink, dinner and dance in the setting sun on the shores of Kununurra. The Rats finished their trip with more sightseeing by car, plane and helicopter of the Kimberley region before returning home. - MARK BRADNEY (Club Captain)

Who is your top sport? SPORTING heroes are deeply embedded in Aussie culture and for the Hastings, the search to find our local sporting heroes has been launched and nominations are now open. Sarah McIntosh, last year’s winner of the Laing and Simmons Sportsperson with a Disability category, has been working hard to better last year’s performances and her last two wins in the category. Sarah, a Year 7 student at St Joseph’s Regional College, lives at Bonny Hills and trains with the Camden Haven Swimming Club. At the Australian School Sports titles in Darwin, Sarah competed in twelve events and came home with eight bronze medals, two silver medals and broke ten S14 individual event records. These results have enabled Sarah to qualify for the School Pacific Games in Adelaide in December. The Port Macquarie Hastings Mayor’s Sporting Fund and the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise have again joined forces in 2017 to deliver the ultimate sports awards presentation ceremony. There is $7,000 in prizes to be awarded to local athletes to help them achieve their sporting dreams. Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise President, Jenny Sinclair said: “Last year’s record number of nominations was inspirational, so we are looking forward to encouraging and supporting even more athletes this year.” The nomination period covers all sporting activity and achievements from October 1, 2016, to September 30, 2017. Following the successful introduction of an online nomination form last year, nominations are open from Monday July 10 at http:// sunrise-rotary.org.au/sportsawards/ and will close at midnight on Friday, September 30. All nominations must be submitted online. The highly sought-after awards now include eight

Focus totally on run to finals

Titans captain Ryan James

WELL, that’s State of Origin for another year! Your Local Independent (YLI) went to press before the match, so hopefully it was a great one - and injury free. This weekend’s games are the final Originaffected matches, with just the six clashes before the focus is on the run into the NRL finals. The Broncos and Storm have weathered this period relatively well, however the Cowboys will be feeling JT’s loss for the remainder of 2017. Normally it is those three Queensland teams who are most rattled by Origin commitments. However this year the Sharks also shouldered a heavy SOO load (four players). They came through OK, dropping just the two games – to the Storm and Sea Eagles – and are now sitting in second place after a bye last weekend. Have a close look at the ladder. Only three wins separates seventh from fourteenth. These next eight games will be a desperate scramble for these teams. Most years 26 points is the rule of thumb between getting in and missing the eight. So you can do the maths. How many wins

15, 5.30pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle): It’s a home game for the luckless Knights who take on an Origin-weary Broncos. The Knights have had winning leads in their past two outings and most punters would love to see them with a ‘w’. It is a danger game for the Broncos. However they sit on 24 pts and fifth place. With just percentages separating them from Manly (fourth) and the Cowboys (sixth). Wayne Bennett will see this as a must-win and will have his team prepared mentally. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Titans v Sharks (Saturday, July 15, 7.30pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast): You would think the second-placed Sharks would canter home. But not-so. There is a glimmer of finals hope for the Gold Coast. Their wretched injury run is almost over and if their Origin troops are front and centre then they will have the resources and reason to cause a home upset. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Sea Eagles v Tigers (Sunday, July 16, 2pm, Lottoland, Sydney): Manly were ordinary last weekend in losing to the Panthers, but that was their first hiccup in a while. The Tigers’ players appear to be already looking towards 2018, so this should be 14th – 16th July 2017 a comfortable win for the Sea Eagles. Friday 14th July, 6pm, Mt Smart Stadium • Your Local Independent tips: Warriors vs Panthers Sea Eagles Friday 14th July, 7.50pm, GIO Stadium Rabbitohs v Cowboys (Sunday, Raiders vs Dragons July 16, 4pm, Barlow Park, Cairns): Saturday 15th July, 5.30pm, McDonald Jones Stadium Tough one. Rabbitohs (16pts) must Knights vs Broncos win to keep their finals hopes alive. Saturday 15th July, 7.30pm, Cbus Super Stadium However the Cows have shown in Titans vs Sharks recent weeks they can win without JT. Sunday 16th July, 2pm, Lottoland In fact over the past five weeks they Sea Eagles vs Wests Tigers have won three, lost one and had the Sunday 16th July, 4pm, Barlow Park bye last weekend. Crucially this game Rabbitohs vs Cowboys is in Cairns turning it into a home game for the Cowboys. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys

does your team need to make it. Let’s tip some winners this weekend. Warriors v Panthers (Friday, July 14, 6pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): Very good match-up. Both on 18 points. Both promised plenty in 2017. Both have been very inconsistent this season. The Warriors are coming off a bye while the Panthers were smart in upsetting Manly 16-8. If you had to put your house on this one, the Warriors are at home and in recent weeks have been looking more like finals contenders. • Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Raiders v Dragons (Friday, July 14, 7.50pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Another tough one. The Dragons solid run ended during the Origin period. Their last five outings have resulted in three losses, a win and a bye. However the Raiders were even worse with not one win from the last five rounds – two byes kept them in touch. Raiders have promised all season, but tipsters have lost patience. • Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Knights v Broncos (Saturday, July
