THERE is plenty to celebrate during the Hastings Heritage Festival, but where better than one of our most notable landmarks, the 150-year-old Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard. Across the region there will be numerous events to mark the heritage festival, from Saturday, April 16 to Friday, April 29 (see Page 3). However a ‘don’t miss affair’ is a walk into the past at the Douglas Vale Homestead on Saturday, April 23. Free entry allows visitors to be met by friendly volunteers dressed in colonial costume as you wander around the magnificent grounds that have been lovingly restored to their pre-1920s glory. You can tour the oldest timber homestead in Port Macquarie, which houses a dedicated museum interpreting the lives of the region’s wine and oyster pioneers. The three-hectare grounds include the vineyard, orchard, rose garden and ornamental ponds. Against this back-drop, you can be entertained throughout the day with musical groups including Sing Australia, the Camden Haven Concert Band and folk singer, Roy Sweeney, while enjoying the famous Devonshire teas and sausage sizzle. Douglas Vale is also unique as the only volunteer-run and not-for-profit vineyard in Australia. The Heritage Open Day runs from 9.30am to 2.30pm and the location is very close to town at 235 Oxley Highway.

By SCOTT HENDERSON BYABARRA is set to welcome a number of internationally acclaimed artists, who on April 16 will host an intimate evening of poetry and photography at the Blue Poles Gallery to raise funds for humanitarian projects abroad. The debut performance of ‘The Flame’ will showcase a haunting rendition of a series of original poems and photographs from the book ‘Red Hill – A Dreaming’ – a collaboration between internationally recognised poet Hilary Elfick, and multi-award winning photographer David John Malikoff. Set to the soundscape of music composed by talented artist Richard Morris, ‘The Flame’ inspires a journey of word and image to explore the significance of fire. This includes a homage to the power and beauty of its role in nature, as well as a celebration of the work done by those involved in the volunteer fire service. For David Malikoff, the opportunity of performing in one of his favourite venues has been a major drawcard. “The intimate atmosphere and energy of Blue Poles audiences is second to none,” he said. “This is the first time I have the privilege of not only performing with a great poet, but exhibiting some of the best images from our books.” All artist fees raised on the night will be used to support Mera Primary School in the Nepalese village of Kharikhola. In recent years, the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise has partnered with Kharikhola to deliver projects to improve education and living standards in the impoverished community. “The kids of Mera School are passionate

Hilary Elfick hopes that the evening brings a unique style of entertainment that resonates with its audience. “Above all, entertainment, but I hope also enlightenment and inspiration. Ordinary people achieving extraordinary things,” she said. “’Red Hill’ and ‘Bush Fire’ are conversations between photographer and poet, but they remain private conversations until they are shared with others. “Only then will the stories’ universal appeal be tested.” ‘Red Hill – A Dreaming’ has already won the
plaudits of a number of leading personalities in the international literary circuit, including UK National Poetry Prize winner Caroline Carver. “It is wonderful. Moving. Mysterious. Extraordinary,” she commented. In addition to the exhibition, the Blue Poles Gallery and Café will offer a three-course meal and selection of local wines to complement the evening. A range of quality images will be available for sale, as well as copies of ‘Red Hill – A Dreaming.’ The event will take place on Saturday, April 16, from 6pm. AT the end of The Island of Doctor Moron’s debut screening in Sydney last month, the audience erupted out of their seats in a standing ovation. Creator and producer, Chris Dockrill, said many people told him that while they loved the live show, the film was even better. The Island of Doctor Moron is what Chris calls a ‘hybrid’ film of his successful highenergy, Australian rock musical, and tickets were sold out two weeks in advance. During the live show in 2014 the crew used 14 cameras and developed a perfect 5.1 sound track directly off a 48-channel desk. “The result is a film that gives its viewers an intimacy with the rock musical that is much closer, more immediate and more powerful than the live show, which in itself was overpowering,” Chris said. “There has never before been a cinematic film of a live, completely original, Australian rock musical and we have made history.” The successful film is set to tour Australia, the USA, Europe and the UK this year and, as Chris promised, Kempsey is the first showing in regional NSW because that was where the idea for the original play was born. MEMBERS of the Camden Haven Historical Society have been busy organising for Heritage Week 2016. There is focus on the Camden Haven this year with the Launch of Heritage Week occurring at the Camden Haven Pilot Station at 10am on Saturday, April 16, by Port MacquarieHastings Mayor, Peter Besseling. The opening will be followed by the launch of an art exhibition of maritime signal flags created by Laurieton Primary School under the guidance of Artist in Residence, Sarah Parker. The project has been inspired by the Pilot Station’s original set of signal flags now in the
Mid North Coast Maritime Museum collection. This is an opportunity for locals and visitors to see the Pilot Station and enjoy a sausage sizzle catered for by the Laurieton Men’s Shed. Other events during the week will be a number of Historical Walks on Sunday April 17 guided by members of the Camden Haven Historical Society. Learn about local history and enjoy an easy walk from the museum (on the corner of Bold and Laurie Streets) to the river along Laurie Street. Numbers are limited to 10 people per walk and the cost is a gold coin donation. The first walk will commence at 10am. There is a lot of interest, so it is suggested that you book your place early by phoning Mike Dodkin on 6559 9105.
There will be a number of new displays in the Laurieton Museum for the week. These include ‘Our Rivers, Our Heritage’ and photographs of Laurieton taken by Alfred Cavalchini in 19161918. The Laurieton Museum will be open on Saturday April 16 and Sunday April 17 from 9am to 1pm, with the entry being a gold coin donation and school children are free. The Camden Haven Historical Society’s Museum, located in the School of Arts Building in Bold Street Laurieton, (opposite the Plaza Picture Theatre) is usually open on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am1pm. Entry is only $2.50 and school children are free.
The films have been curated by Esem Projects, a public arts and heritage group who work with digital storytelling platforms to create multiplatform artworks across digital projection, sound, archives and digital media. The project has worked closely in collaboration with the Port Macquarie Hastings community, including the local RSL, the Port Macquarie Museum and Family History Society. ‘Portraits of Memory’ has been funded through the Australian Government from the Anzac Centenary Arts and Culture Fund Public Grants Program and has resulted in two large scale outdoor digital projected works that acknowledge the impact that the ANZAC spirit has had within our local community today.

By CHRISTINA PARKIN SYDNEY might have its ‘Vivid’ festival, but Port Macquarie will have its own unique illumination of historical scenes projected at night onto the walls of the Port Macquarie Historic Courthouse and the Ritz building. The projections will occur during the evenings from Monday, April 18 until Tuesday, May 3. Stories and footage of community members holding objects of personal significance, have been captured in large scale portraits, providing us with an exhibition of memorypieces that connect us today to the experiences of Australians at war.

FOLLOWING our story ‘Roadwork Roulette’, I was driving to Kempsey last Thursday, as I do every week and witnessed the aftermath of yet another accident on my way. I didn’t see the cause, I was heading north, those involved were heading south and it occurred smack bang between Cooperabung and Kundabung. I didn’t stop as others had stopped to help the man whose ute had ended up half way up an embankment and being held there precariously on its side by trees. The driver’s side front end of his vehicle had pretty much been ripped off and the shocked driver was being attended to by a passerby. I called my office to call the police, who, in turn called back to say they had not had other reports, so it must all be good. Not having a go at the police, if an ambulance had been needed I’m sure they would have attended the scene. What really amazed me? The fact that the construction workers on the highway kept working, the stop go man turned his back on the incident, all within 50 metres of the site gate. The man was in high vis gear, maybe a contractor? Whatever the case, if that was any other work site, Work Cover would have been all over it and the site shutdown! Please explain?

Train services should not be cut
I RECENTLY returned home from visiting my sister in Wyong and booked my luggage through to be picked up at Wauchope station. The station attendant told me I may not be able to do that in the future as they are talking about cutting staff from country railway stations. After thinking about this, I suppose that staff would be cut from night services. I went out to Wauchope Station this week to see what arriving
staff, I would have to take my own suitcase into the carriage with everyone else’s luggage and then ask the staff on the train to unload it. However, I don’t think there is much room for luggage on each carriage and I certainly wouldn’t be able to put it up on the overhead racks. I think Wauchope station staff give me exceptional customer service and I would hate for anyone of these helpful fellows to lose their jobs.

We pensioners need these courteous men to keep us safe and to provide a luggage service for those of us who are a little bit disabled. I know that I definitely still want to have the trains that arrive at the station at night time. I don’t want these train services to be cut. Ratepayers robbed WE, the ratepayers were all robbed! How? Well, we pay rates in advance. We paid rates in advance for the year 2014 -2015. We paid for 52 red bin collects in advance, the council took our money. But 3-4 months into the year the red bin collection was halved and turned into fortnightly pick up. We paid in advance; where’s our money? We were also told that the new system; fortnightly collects would be cheaper. From the horse’s mouth! Cheaper? Was yours cheaper? Where’s our money?
We are nothing but mushrooms; fed on b/s and kept in the dark! No wonder we distrust the government on all levels. I saw three council blokes working and 10, yes 10 looking on in Buller Street last week – not a good look! I saw rubbish all over Central Road to Lake Road. A real mess and take a look around the west end of Coles; that’s a mess! Chatting to a senior council employee recently, I was told: “They rely on the public to bring things to their notice.” Council take note: The western end of Waugh Street, Port Macquarie was
listed to be fixed up 10 years ago – (as per council ganger); it’s still not done! How much in rates has been sucked out of Waugh Street? It’s all units! Fair Go! Name withheld Port Macquarie
Give CBD face-lift I WONDER if anyone in council read the recently published letter ‘Share the wealth’? The logic in that made a lot of sense. Looking up High St Wauchope, it’s easy to see that with

a little imagination the CBD would be transformed into a unique area. The effort that our business people put into their shop presentations deserve better than a 50+ year old patched and cracked grey concrete footpath at their doors, bare dirt masquerading as a garden, plus a handful of planter boxes. Walk around the corner into Hastings Street, the shamefully dirty grey footpath can’t be missed, with a few wilting plants that have survived under the fig trees. The rest died weeks ago. TO Port Macquarie who should be so proud of the Glasshouse. Having just returned to Sydney from a lovely Easter in Port Macquarie, the Glasshouse is indeed a wonderful building and both a credit to your town and a spectacular highlight for tourists and locals alike.

TO the appalling state of the general cemetery in Widderson St, Port Macquarie. We had a family funeral there last week and had to stand in knee high grass. It was very distressing for some members of the family.

He yelled ‘Mind Out’. There was very little room to manoeuvre the trolleys. Fortunately, a tragedy was averted. Yes, he did drive off at speed proudly displaying green P Plates!

Farewell ‘Auntie Lolly’

ATTENDING the recent funeral for Roslyn ‘Lottie’ Mosely, I couldn’t help but think of those wise words of Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. Lottie was one of those people – full of love, life, spirit, generosity, acceptance and good humour – and her sudden death at 51 on an overseas trip to Costa Rica took everyone by surprise. The anguish felt by her family and friends was palpable and the enormous attendance at her funeral was testimony to the grief that many feel with her loss. People came from near and far to acknowledge to Lottie’s family, how much Lottie meant to them and equally, knowing that she was no longer to be around, to register how much the loss would affect them. Lottie loved her family and friends dearly – not just her four beautiful children, Aliera, Reno, Aaron and Shannai, but her grandchildren – Brody, Malachi and Brielle, siblings and mother Phyllis and she took every opportunity via Facebook to let them know. A proud Dunghutti woman born in Sydney and raised in Newcastle, Lottie was very involved with her children’s sport in athletics and basketball, later becoming manager of a NSW representative team. Before becoming an Indigenous mentor with Kiewort Ertech at Onslow WA, Lottie found her niche as a pre-school teacher. Lottie was a natural children’s educator and the children of Dalaigur Pre-school would flock to their beloved ‘Auntie Lolly’ whenever they met her outside of the centre. A citation for Lottie when she was a finalist in the 2010 Bi-annual Community Child Care Awards stated that: “Lottie has that ‘X’ factor

Lottie was also recognised in the 2013 International Women’s Day awards as a remarkable woman of the Kempsey community, for her efforts in the early addressing of literacy
in Aboriginal communities and as a trained facilitator for PuP – Parents under Pressure program. However, it was Lottie’s insights into bringing Aboriginal cultural perspectives into the classroom which endeared her to her charges at Dalaigur Pre-School in West Kempsey. Lottie

and the team at Dalaigur adapted the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) program based on speech pathology principles by teaching children about the shapes and sounds of letters, as a pre-cursor to reading and writing, with more cultural links. Current Director, Ms Juli Morris, remarked that the Dalaigur community felt that all the words and feelings expressed won’t reflect enough just how magnificent and vibrant a woman Lottie was. “Lottie invested 18 years of her life in Dalaigur and together with the director at the time, Janet Jensen, travelled the country promoting Dalaigur and they can be proud of the solid reputation they have built and the legacy they have left us all to carry on and continue,” said Ms Morris. As a result of the adapted ALNF program markedly increasing the pre-literacy learning skills in 100 per cent of the children who participated, other pre-school centres in Kempsey were soon keen to take part. Lottie’s dream of giving Aboriginal children a good start to entering education became a reality and is now a significant theme of the ‘Closing the Gap’ government initiatives. Not to let the grass grow under her feet, Lottie took on a new challenge and applied to work in administration in the Wheatstone Liquefied Petroleum Gas Project near Onslow in Western Australia. Before long, Lottie, now known as ‘Ros’, was recognised for her exceptional people skills and was appointed as an Indigenous Mentor. Another goal, to travel overseas to Costa Rica was realised by Lottie, but within a couple of days of arriving, her family had been contacted about her sudden death. Lottie has left an extensive legacy, proving that the power and passion of ‘one’ can achieve so much. Rest in Peace, Auntie Lolly.

Grants boost projects STATE MATTERS With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
NEW Community Projects: Two local community projects are set to receive makeovers with over $61,000 in grants. Last year community groups, councils, charities and private organisations were encouraged to put forward projects that would help improve our local area under the NSW Government’s Social Housing Community Improvement Fund (SHCIF). I’m thrilled that Mission Australia Housing and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council were successful and will proceed with their projects. Mission Australia Housing will use the $11,398 funding to upgrade their Hollingworth Street property with improved garden and safety facilities, while Port Macquarie-Hastings Council will undertake $50,000 worth of improvements to Oxide Park by installing picnic tables, park benches and a mobility scooter training circuit. The NSW Government promised to build stronger, more vibrant social housing communities and we’re delivering on that today with these projects. This is all about creating communities that people are proud to call home and I am looking forward to seeing the projects come to life. These two projects are among more than 120 across NSW that will benefit from $4.2 million in funding through the NSW Government’s Social Housing Community Improvement Fund (SHCIF). The SHCIF is a three-year commitment to build stronger social housing communities through improvements to fencing, lighting, disability access and a whole range of community projects including playgrounds, communal gardens, basketball courts and skate ramps. To find out more about the announcement of Social Housing Community Improvement Fund visit: www.facs.nsw.gov.au/SHCIF Manufacturing Expo On Again: The Port Macquarie Manufacturing and Engineering Expo will be held again in October following the success of last year’s event, thanks to the support of the NSW Government. I have successfully secured $5000 funding for the Expo which will showcase the potential of the Mid North Coast and is a valuable experience for businesses and the community in Port Macquarie. When I approached the Minister for Regional Development and Small Business John Barilaro, he didn’t hesitate to provide support by approving a ‘one off grant’ for the Expo. Last year’s Expo was an outstanding success and I know planning is well underway for this year’s event.

By SUE PATERICK WITH summer temperatures and blue skies shining on the annual Kempsey Show recently, it was warm in the Poultry Shed and noisy. Deep-chested roosters with plumes of shiny tail feathers crowed proudly, and loudly, to let everyone know just how beautiful they were. Calmly filling up each bird’s water bowl, Bobby Forrest didn’t seem fazed. A self-confessed lover of chooks, he hasn’t missed a show since he was 17 and has run the show’s Poultry Shed as a volunteer for 40 years. Along with his mate, Terry Burley, Bobby ensures the chooks have enough water and food for the duration of the two-day show. Born in Kempsey, Bobby grew up at Millbank and used to walk 3.2 kilometres to school in his bare feet. About 53 years ago he decided to get a few chooks as a hobby, and found he liked ‘mucking about’ with them. This enjoyment has won Bobby and his chooks quite a few ribbons in that time, but the highlight was beating 4000 other entrants to win Champion Bird of Show at the Sydney Royal Easter Show last year. Winning was a bit of a shock for Bobby and his wife, Jean. Before he passed away, Jean’s Dad, a chook
Kempsey Show regular, Bobby Forrest, with his beloved, and prize-winning chooks lover too, had tried for 40 years to win at the Royal Easter Show. “I only wish he was here to see us win,” Bobby said. Sticking to Australian breeds, Bobby has had Australorp bantams all his life but his favourite are Langshan bantams because they are so quiet and easy to handle. At this year’s Kempsey Show, Bobby won first prize with both breeds. Living on about 24 hectares at Aldavilla, he has about 50 chooks. His advice to anyone starting out is to pick a breed they like and buy the best quality birds. Two pullets and a cockerel is a good mix to start with if you want to breed, but if you just want eggs stick with four or more pullets.
A good fowl yard is an absolute must. It has to be fox proof and to ensure that, Bobby digs iron down about one third of a metre. It is pure pleasure that keeps him breeding chickens, which he would rather give away than sell. “We try to help other people improve their breeds, especially young juniors,” Bobby said. “It’s a good way to encourage children to get into chooks and enter the show.” And keeping the Kempsey Show going and prospering for another 135 years, is as important to him as it is to the whole community. “I think everyone makes an effort and without good helpers the show wouldn’t work,” Bobby said.

Youth Week launch By CHRISTINA PARKIN
AN enthusiastic Youth Week committee recently launched their program at the Glasshouse forecourt. Coordinated by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, in partnership with the Hastings Youth Advisory Council (YAC), this year’s Youth Week will take place between April 11-17. With a theme of ‘It starts with us’, Youth Week is an opportunity for young people from across the region to share ideas, attend live events, have their voices heard on local issues and celebrate their contribution to the wider community. “We are really excited about this year’s program and encourage the youth of Port Macquarie-Hastings to be part of the many events,” said Aaron Patton, President of the Hasting Youth Advisory Council. Lots of activities will be on offer during Youth Week and for the first time there will be a free bus service for youth from Kendall, Laurieton, Bonny Hills, Lake Cathie and Wauchope to the Waves and Melodies event on Saturday, April 16. On Thursday, April 14, between 12 and 6pm, there will be a Street Art Mural workshop where temporary walls will be installed on Town Green, Port Macquarie, where young people will have the opportunity to work alongside local artists such as Dimz, Sigh and Adam Murray to learn more about street art styles. The ‘Inflatable Race’ is set for Friday, April 15, where young people will gather at Settlement Point to register then battle it out in the cut throat world of inflatable toy racing from 11am. Competitors should bring their inflatable device or toy to start on the reserve, race into the water and paddle like crazy around the 500m course in a team or as an individual. The race will be followed by a busk-off competition

The park will be lit into the night, with a games area and projection display, which finishes at approximately 8pm. For youth over 18, they can join the YAC at the Waves and Melodies after-party at the Pier on Clarence Street, where bands from the day will be rocking it into the night. Identification

Our young voice MISSION Australia is calling on NSW’s young people to express their concerns and hopes for the future by taking part in the largest annual nationwide poll of young Australians, the Mission Australia 2016 Youth Survey. Leading community organisation, Mission Australia opened its 15th annual Youth Survey during National Youth Week (April 8-17) providing a platform for 15-19 year olds to have their say. Mission Australia NSW State Director Ben Carblis said: “Young Australians are our future and we must do everything we can to provide opportunities for their voices to be heard, to better understand and nurture their ambitions and support them to fulfil their potential. “Our annual Youth Survey is important as it provides insight into their concerns and allows us to ensure they are considered by key decision makers including politicians, policy makers and community organisations. “We are keen to hear from more than 5000 young people from NSW this year. Their responses will enable us to understand life from the perspective of the young people in NSW in 2016.” In 2015, the top three barriers young people saw as impacting the achievements of their study/work goals after school were academic ability, financial difficulty and family responsibilities. Over one in 10 respondents from NSW indicated that they saw a lack of jobs and physical or mental health as barriers to the achievement of their study/work goals after school. Mr Carblis said: “This year we have included new focus questions to understand young people’s experiences of discrimination as well as questions focused on young people’s sense of community.” Mission Australia’s 2016 Youth Survey is open to all Australian young people aged 15-19 years old. How long have you lived in or around the Hastings? I moved here with my family in 2012. We love it! What do you love most about the Hastings? Everything! The climate, the beaches, the people – why would you want to live anywhere else? Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I work at Wauchope Country Club and I love pretty much everything about my job. I particularly love the fact that, because we are a community-based, not-for-profit organisation, we are able to support a wide range of community groups and do things that make a positive difference to people’s lives. What do you like least about your work? I’m a pretty bad golfer so I guess what I like least is explaining to other golfers what went wrong this time. How do you start your day? I have four kids at school, so every day starts with a mad rush to get everyone organised and out the door on time! Once I get to work priority one is usually coffee. What do you do in your spare time? I’m a pretty keen gardener and I love the beach so I spend a lot of time outside. I also love food so cooking is another passion. What is the achievement you are most proud of? I have been married for 16 years and I have four beautiful daughters. My family is definitely my greatest achievement and a constant source of pride and joy.
IN my travels around Port Macquarie I’ve come to meet an outstanding group of dedicated, and often unrecognised, volunteers and carers, who form the heart of the Port Macquarie community. One of those is Greg Laird, an outgoing, community-minded and caring man who is also incredibly humble about his achievements in the community. I recently had the honour of meeting Greg, President of the Port Macquarie RSL Sub Branch and Branch Secretary Kevin Lakey to present them with Australian flags, which are used at the funerals of local returned services personnel. Greg is an Australian Defence force veteran who has dedicated decades of his own time promoting the work of the Returned Services League, educating Port Macquarie youth about the RSL’s work, conducting RSL funeral services, promoting veteran welfare, zone eight bowls and their involvement in hospitals and nursing homes. He also arranges Anzac Day commemoration services, marches and events, including an historic first-ever event in Tumbarumba, well before Anzac Services were widespread and many Australians had lost their connection with the traditions of Anzac dawn services and Vietnam War commemorations. He has worked tirelessly to help the National Servicemen’s Association, the Royal Australian Air Force Association and cadet groups.

For all of this behind-the-scenes work, Greg has been honoured with life membership of the Returned and Services League. Kevin who is a former major, served for 38 years in the Australian Army Artillery and his son Major Ian Lakey has followed in his footsteps. He joins Greg in completing so much of the wonderful work the RSL undertakes in Port Macquarie. On a recent visit to St Agnes Catholic Care of the Aged retirement village in Port I had the pleasure of meeting managers Tina Madden and Cath Quirk. Both ladies work at St Agnes and Lourdes Villages, but it is more than work to them. They deeply care for the welfare of all the residents, arranging outings, birthday parties and activities for those at these Port Macquarie aged care villages. I know I have only scratched the surface of the pool of amazing Port Macquarie volunteers and community carers. There are plenty more.
TWO local community projects on the Camden Haven are continuing to gain momentum as the hard work of dozens of local volunteers begins to pay off. In Kendall, the local tennis club’s ongoing development is going from strength to strength with the further work soon to be undertaken on the clubhouse. For well over ten years now, Wendy Hudson and her dedicated committee at the Kendall Tennis Club have continued to raise funds and undertake significant work at the Club which has seen the installation of new tennis courts of championship standard and a new clubhouse. The club’s numbers have now grown to 324 members. I’m delighted to announce a $12,000 grant under the Australian Government’s Stronger Communities program towards the clubhouse upgrade including the installation of air-conditioning, new equipment and security upgrade. The $28,000 project will furnish the new clubhouse with a lounge area consisting of a large modular lounge, cabinet, coffee table and large screen TV. The project will also furnish a seating area with five tables and 20 chairs along with display cabinets, championships and officer bearer board. There will also be a games area with a pool table and table tennis tables.
There’s plenty of history in vandalism
I CAME across a store recently that said it was a supplier to vandals, or something like that. I had forgotten about it, but then I found a store that described itself as a ‘vandals supplier’. I don’t know if there is a difference, but I wondered why a store would advertise itself in such a way. It had a long list of items and they were all advertised as ‘of top quality’. The town where I live doesn’t have much trouble from vandals, but I have heard of other towns where people take great delight in destroying things. But I wondered why those people were called ‘vandals’. Didn’t they occupy a key place in the world’s history? This vandals supplier probably found its niche in the world’s best, or worst, names. But then I found that the word ‘vandal’ goes back, in print, to at least the year 1555. The word, with a capital V, named a Germanic tribe that caused mayhem throughout western Europe and further afield, even northern Africa. They were, literally, the first vandals. They didn’t worry about writing rude words on train carriages or bare walls. No, they killed people instead. They apparently found this much more fun. But how did a word that described a group in Europe become a word we still use to describe people who cause social disruption in our own shores?

Well, so far as I can understand, the Vandals become prominent during the last days of the Roman Empire. Then, after a few defeats, they slid into the background for a few years, but their name lingered on. After a few acts of barbarism and destruction, the name Vandals sprung to mind. The first use of the word ‘vandals’ in print that I could find came in 1663, when they were linked with Goths. The Goths weren’t much better, although they later became Christians, so I suppose there was an element of goodness in them somewhere. Somebody found a way to write an adjective. In 1648 a bloke called Winyard writing in ‘Midsummer Moon’ said ‘the whole university resembles Greece overrun by Turkes, or Italy Goth’d and Vandald’. In 1780 William Cowper, lamenting the Vandals’ burning of books, said the Vandals had
burnt a ‘nobler pile than ever Romans saw’. In 1801 came a comment about ‘modern Vandals’. But about this time came ‘the second inroad of the Vandal race’. Even a senator was described as a vandal. He must have been bad. Notice that about this time the Germanic people had given way to a generic word and anybody who destroyed things was described as a vandal, with a lower case v. The word prompted other words.‘Vandalic’ represented destruction. ‘Vandalism’ was coined by Henri Gregoire, Bishop of Blois, who in 1703 talked about the Vandals’ ruthless destruction of anything beautiful or venerable. He left his criticism a bit late. Most people had forgotten about the Vandals by that date. Then there was ‘vandalistic’ and ‘vandalise’ and a few other words that all meant roughly the same thing. I came across a wall recently where somebody had written ‘question everything’. Underneath, somebody else had written ‘why’. But next time you see a person writing on a train carriage or a blank wall have pity on him. He might simply be trying to keep alive a culture that went into hibernation a few hundred years ago. Is your SMSF in the ATO Spotlight

Timely lodgement of SMSF annual returns is a serious concern for the ATO and whilst most SMSFs lodge annual returns on time, the ATO has stated that those that lodge late or not at all are attracting their attention to consider if these funds could possibly be at a high risk of non-compliant behaviour. If you have established your SMSF anytime during the period 1 July 2014 to 30th June 2015 you needed to have lodged the funds income tax return with a registered tax agent by 28th February 2016. For most other funds lodging through a tax agent this will usually have a due date in May 2016, however it’s important to note that if your fund has lodged late in the past you will lose this concessional lodgement date and may well of already past your due date for the 2015 financial year. The ATO is giving special attention to SMSFs that have never lodged returns and/or continue to lodge late. Amongst other action the ATO will also consider using the new administrative penalties (in place since July 2014). What this means for you? Its ultimately up to you as Trustee to ensure you have provided the documents
to your accountant and auditor with sufficient time to get your SMSF returns lodged on time. Failure to lodge your SMSF returns on time will not only incur late lodgement penalties payable by your SMSF, it could also attract the attention of the ATO and its administrative penalty regime. SMSF trustees need to be aware that these administrative financial penalties cannot be paid from SMSF assets: instead the penalties are imposed on SMSF trustees directly and must be paid from personal savings. What you can do? Contact your accountant or advisor in the first instant. You cannot lodge your SMSF tax return until the audit has been completed and signed off by your SMSF auditor. Further the auditor should be an approved SMSF auditor and the accountant who prepared the tax return for your SMSF cannot also be the fund’s auditor. Take a slow walk through Kendall’s glorious gardens By CHRISTINA PARKIN AUTUMN weather is a perfect time to enjoy the fruits of hard work in a garden and the Kendall District Gardeners invite you to their 2016 Open Gardens on Saturday, April 23. There is now eight gardens, with six new gardens that have never been on show before. ‘Ningana’ in Albert St was last opened about ten years ago. A rainforest walk takes you to a large grassed open space where wallabies and wildlife congregate at dusk for supper. Owners, Jill and Roy, also rescue and nurse injured native fauna back to health and slowly release them back into the wild. Getting up close to recuperating birds and animals will be a feature of exploring ‘Ningana’. Wendy and David’s ‘Symphony of Seasons’ is a large, wild garden, full of plants and paths that take you through a forest of trees, a lake full of waterbirds and lotus and a large open grassed space big enough for a cricket match, complete with resident peacock and his four wives. Down the road, Barb and Neil Monument’s garden is a different style with large manicured open areas, tall trees stretching across areas among small groups of palms, purple Lasiandras and other species. Drive on to Laurel Street and hidden down the short lane next to a church is Janice and Derek’s treat of a garden. Their blue old-time house will bring a sigh and memories of a time past, with many mature unusual trees in the process of
rejuvenation; the more you look, the more you discover. At Kew Road, Monique and Ron have moved from Tassie and are a perfect fit. Monique trains gun dogs and the hedges give the feeling of a maze – ordered and structured, but always green. There are flowers and other plantings of vines and shrubs to admire before you cross to the eastern side of the highway for the next two gardens. Phelps’ Garden is always changing with new plantings. Fruit trees including plums, apple, pears and quince, are among other interesting developments, with the more interesting native Lilly Pilly ‘Cascade’ and some flowering ground covers. One of the best specimens you’d see of Pittosporum rhombifolium, covered in its orange berries, is a mature tree now. Further on is Kerry and John’s almost perfectly manicured urban garden. Majestic Cabbage tree palms across the front of the property set the scene. It seems to have everything the heart can desire – a pool surrounded by smaller palms, plenty of designed space, and seating all around. Entry into the eight gardens is $10 and registration for the day is at the School of Arts Hall from 10am to 4pm. Allow at least two hours minimum to see all the gardens. All funds raised will be used for the upkeep of the School of Arts Hall. Items will be available for sale, along with lunches, morning and afternoon teas. The Hope Shop was opened 13 years ago in the Hastings with a vision to bring life, love and practical support to our local community. For the past 10 years volunteers have been helping and supporting Hastings Women & Children’s Refuge and other 15 local welfare organisations. Besides that, the organization also helps to integrate into the community people with special needs from our region, drug and alcohol counseling program, support groups, local churches and many others. Producers will produce laughs By LIZZIE McLEOD CHORUS girls popping out of filing cabinets, Nazi pigeons, and a gay Hitler are just a taste of what to expect from the Players Theatre Port Macquarie this May. ‘The Producers’ is The Players’ latest musical and is based on the 1967 Mel Brooks movie of the same name. The musical tells the story of a failing producer named Max Bialystock and an unhappy accountant, Leopold Bloom. The two come together to gather the worst script ever written, the worst director, and the worst cast in town in a scheme to get rich by producing the biggest flop in Broadway history. Firstly, the two need to raise two million dollars the old fashion way - from elderly, sex starved widows. This is the beginning of an hilarious and show stopping musical that is a true representation of Brooks’ signature humour. The cast features Rob Doyle as the incompetent producer Max Bialystock and Mark Morabito as the mousey accountant Leo Bloom;
the original Broadway production starred Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick and ran for 2,502 performances, winning a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards. Supporting the two actors are Simone Berry who plays Ulla, Adrian Davis who plays Roger DeBris, Matthew Symons as Carmen Ghia, and Christopher Phillips as Franz Liebkind. Daniel Parlevliet will debut as Director, making the switch off stage to focus on his new role. By CHRISTINA PARKIN MUSIC speaks all languages and there is no age that is too early to enjoy the many cultural and learning benefits music can bring. Bang, Crash and Rattle is an early childhood music program run by Bethany Cook at the Mid North Coast Conservatorium in Hollingworth Street (old Girl Guide Hall) on Wednesdays 9.3010.15am. It is an excellent example of how much fun babies and children can have with music. The program is aimed at babies from six months to young children five years old and the various activities are short and sharp to keep them interested with a mixture of movement and static activity. A parachute is used to play one of the many games, instruments are brought out and there is dancing towards the end once the children have warmed-up and are feeling more relaxed. “Sometimes a child will just sit back and observe, but they are still taking it all in and parents have told me that they start singing or using an activity at home they observed here,” said Ms Cook, mother to a young daughter, Isabella. Often the shyer children might sit back for a number of weeks, and this was true for Hudson O’Grady whose mother, Jasmin, noted that Hudson, normally shy, ‘loves music and it took

him three sessions but now he’s really getting into it’. Teacher Leah Toole, noted that there is not a lot of emphasis on music in the curriculum. “I’d love to see music pushed a lot more as it has so many benefits,” said Mrs Toole. “It’s a great foundation.” Bethany learnt piano at five years, has participated in the Port Macquarie Hastings Municipal Band and got interested in early childhood music studies as part of her primary teacher training and has now completed studies in Kodaly music programming. The Kodaly philosophy of early childhood music education is a specific music program which assists with beat recognition, rhythm, pitch exploration, finger work as an exercise to develop both sides of the brain, tempo – fast/ slow; dynamics loud/soft and a mix of activities so all age groups are engaged. It is well known that actively using and studying music is closely linked with assisting with the development of mathematical skills. At present, the Crash, Bang Rattle program is free due to the generosity of a recent bequest and parents and carers are invited to bring their children along a few minutes earlier than 9.30am to enjoy the sessions. COLD Chisel original and Australian rock legend Ian Moss is coming to Port Macquarie. Moss is already blowing away audiences with his ‘Tenth Anniversary Six Strings Classics Tour’. The ‘Six Strings’ album immediately became an instant classic in Australia and was recorded in Sydney. It included ‘Cold Chisel’ greats, platinum solo singles, new songs, and relics from Hendrix and Creedence. “The tour is going great,” said Moss in an exclusive interview with Your Local Independent. “I had a great night at the Enmore theatre in Sydney which is a real highlight. It’s a great fun tour. It’s easy, every Friday and Saturday I get to travel about a bit, which I like to do.” Fans have raved about Moss’s new songs as well as his ability to take on classic favourites and perform them with his own style and emotion. “A different take on a favourite - that’s not that hard. It seems to be working well for me and I do quite a different take on some of the songs,” he said. “So for me it’s all about, no matter what the take is, if you’re focusing on what the story is about and you’re delivering that story then you’re drawing people in to listen to that story. It’s all going to work because they know the song. “New songs might be slightly different and I do three or four new songs, which are going down really well.” Moss is an Aussie music icon, as well as a five-times ARIA winner, delivering story telling through his silken voice along with his acoustic guitar in hand. “All you got to do is move forward and we do that,” he says. “We can’t just go around playing the same album year after year. We’ve got to write new songs and promote them, but the more you play them the more people listen to them and the more they are going to get to know them and feel comfortable with them.” When asked what the next 10 years would bring, Moss simply laughs, and says: “World domination!” “I’m still keen to get over to Europe and the United States. Outriggers a bronzed success “

By CHRISTINA PARKIN PORT Macquarie’s outrigger paddlers have been rewarded for their consistency with three bronze medals at the NSW Outrigger Canoe (OC6) titles. The result follows the club’s domination of the Senior Master Women’s division at the recent NSW OC1/2 titles, where national title holders Kerry Owens and Karen Newman won gold again. At last Saturday’s OC6 regatta in Port Stephens, Port Macquarie entered Master Mixed and Senior Master Mixed teams in the 18km long course, as well as an Open Mixed 12km short course crew. Club President Garth Norris said he was extremely proud to see all three teams come away with a medal. “I’m fairly certain this would be the first time in our history that we’ve taken 18 paddlers to the State titles and everyone has made it on to the

Louise Finnegan and Harry Fay did an excellent job,” he said. “The Master Mixed crew of myself, Wes Byrnes, Karen Newman, Kerry Owens, Fiona Baker and Marty Haynes also performed well to finish third in a highly competitive race.” But Norris said perhaps the biggest story of the day was the achievement of the open mixed team, which included two debutants – Erminio Castelletto and Grant Shaw. “The two rookies teamed up with Cathy
Sailing club defies storm threat PORT Macquarie Sailing Club’s Race 12 last Sunday afternoon, April 10, was in doubt with an unpredictable south-easter, a storm hovering in the south-west threatening to kill the breeze (which it eventually did), and a strengthening run-out tide. It was decided to run three short sprint style races to get some sort of a result early, but allow a full afternoon of racing if conditions allowed. Three of these short races were sailed before the breeze did die, the results collated as a mini-series, and the series results entered into the points scores as a single race result. The first short race for the catamarans was won on yardstick by Tony Kuhn on ‘Stella’, followed by Jack Corthals on ‘Harpic’, Dave Winter on ‘Stella’, Rob Barwick on ‘Snot Rocket’, and Ron Apps on ‘Kimbo 3’. ‘Spica’ won on handicap ahead of ‘Harpic’, ‘Stella’, ‘Kimbo 3’, and ‘Snot Rocket’. Dog owners: pick up waste
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council is reminding dog owners to pick up their pet’s waste whilst enjoying public spaces, parks and beaches after a recent increase in notified contamination cases. Local public parks and beaches are for our entire community to enjoy, however a number of irresponsible owners are leaving their dog’s waste behind, creating dirty and unhealthy environments that impact the enjoyment of those accessing public areas. “It is disappointing that that we are seeing an increase in dog waste being left behind”, said Director Matt Rogers. “Council has also received reports of some residents taking dozens of the waste disposal bags that are provided by council free of charge, or even the whole roll at a time leaving little or no bags for other dog owners. “The weekly bag top up service provided by council does not always last the seven days, and residents can help us stretch this service further by taking only what they need for that visit, and reporting misuse.” A free waste disposal bag supply and collection service is available at the following dog friendly beaches: Nobby’s and Lighthouse Beaches in Port Macquarie, Bonny Hills, North Haven and Dunbogan. “Dog owners can also pick up doggy leash bags and replacement waste bags for a small fee at Council’s Customer Service Centres in Port Macquarie, Laurieton and Wauchope,” said Mr Rogers. Council is reminding owners that leaving dog waste behind is against the law and Rangers can issue on the spot fines of $275 for those who fail to comply.

Now, we’ll beat Monday curse WE have to find a way to beat the Monday night hoodoo. Five from eight last weekend was not a bad result for those that followed Your Local Independent’s (YLI) tips in what was another tough round for tipsters. However YLI is finding it hard to get a winner on Monday night. The culprits last round were the Storm, who stumbled 18-12 to the Bulldogs. That match, a home game for Melbourne, was a real barometer for both teams. It showed that the Storm will win more than they lose in 2016, but will probably not be strong in the top four chances this year (so remember that through the season). The Dogs, however, are up there. They didn’t look like winners on Monday night, but won ugly. They will deserve to start favourites in most games this year. OK, here is how we should tip for Round 7 (remember another Thursday night start): Sea Eagles v Eels (Thurs, April 14, 7.50pm, Brookvale Oval, Manly): Manly are at home and backing up from a win over the Warriors last round. The Eels, on the other hand, are really flying high – on third place on the ladder and backing up from a big win over the fancied Raiders. A good guide is the bookies, and they have these two on almost equal footing. Manly are finding form, but the Eels deserve to be given some kudos for their start to 2016. • Your Local Independent tips: Eels Cowboys v Rabbitohs (Friday, April 15, 7.50pm, 1300 Smiles Stadium, Townsville): No-brainer. The Rabbits are shaping as the pretenders for the ’16 title. They were ordinary when allowing the Roosters to get off their ‘duck’ last weekend, while the Cowboys showed they remain the real deal by toppling Penrith. Cows are at home and will be celebrating.
• Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Titans v Dragons (Sat, April 16, 3pm, Cbus Stadium, Gold Coast): A deceptive one. We will go for the Titans, even though there are some injury and suspension doubts (as this is being written). The Dragons have looked woeful in their past two outings, but are a better side than that. The Titans have surprised most with their start to the season. They are at home and should be too strong. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Bulldogs v Warriors (Sat, April 16, 5.30pm, Westpac Stadium, Wellington): It’s a home game for the Dogs, but in Wellington! Despite this, the form guide indicates a Dogs win. However, Canterbury are backing up from a Monday night game where they spent a lot of juice against the Storm. The Warriors are the competition enigma. When will they fire? An upset here is a real possibility, but the Dogs are the sort of team who bring out the worst in the
Tigers v Storm (Sunday, April 17, 4pm, Leichhardt Oval, Sydney): Tigers started well but have dropped their last four. They will be better at home, but the Storm are too disciplined and should come away with a win here. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Roosters v Panthers (Monday, April 18, 7pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Another interesting one. The Roosters are on the board after beating the Rabbitohs in the last round. The Panthers had another close loss. Have no doubt the Roosters have the roster to forge an assault on the eight in the second half of the season, but the hard luck story to date has to be the Panthers. They are back in 12th with just two wins, but they are better than that. Let’s bury that Monday night hoodoo. • Your Local Independent tips: Panthers

NEW ideas and training combinations proposed by two Port Macquarie Flamin’ Dragons coaches, David Pees and Andrew Blundell, enabled the NSW Northern Region team to bring home six gold medals from the recent 2016 National Dragonboating titles held in Adelaide. The NSW Northern Region teams are proud title holders in six categories – Open 200m and 500m, Women’s 200m and 500m and Mixed 200m and 500m. The journey began in September 2015 when the pair volunteered to coach the Northern Region Dragon Boat team for the state titles in Penrith in January, 2016. Paddlers came from as far north as Ballina and south to Forster, and usually the training was conducted at Mylestom near Coffs. Andrew explained how the squad undertook two weekend camps, one at Grafton and one in Port Macquarie with the Saturday of both being up to 9 hours training and another three on the Sunday – and the hard work has paid off. Dragon boat training includes both on and off the water fitness sessions with those working toward qualifying for the team firstly undertaking

WAUCHOPE Men’s pennant teams were triumphant in all 3 grades last Saturday. The 2’s (9) recorded a good win away over Port City 5754 despite 1 side dropping 9 shots on the last 2 ends. The 5’s (9.5) registered a win at home over Kempsey RSL 59-48 while the 7’s (9), also at home, regained their winning form.

THE Single Stableford event played on Wednesday, April 6, had forty seven ladies participate to have Ann Portch take out the A grade with 39 points, followed by Inez Gavin on 36 as the runner up. B Grade went to Ros Judge with the best score on the day with 40 points. Tracy Kirkman was the runner up with 36 points. C Grade was won by Jan Grant on 33, and Pam Willis was the runner-up with 31. Jane Horne had a good day with birdies on the 2nd and 3rd, helped by a gobble. Other birdies were collected by Jacki Bartlett on the 16th, Inez Gavin on the 18th, and Linda Ison on the 9th. Gobbles were also scored by Jill Semchyshn on the 10th and Ann Portch on the 16th. Nearest the pins on the 4th were scarce, with Narelle Quinn the only one to land on the green for A grade. On the 18th, Inez Gavin for A Grade and Shirley Tisdell for B Grade were closest. Balls went to 29 points. The first round of the Singles Match Play has been completed, with wins to Narelle Quinn, Linda Ison, Jenny Taylor, Jeanette Hardy, Inez Gavin, Finola Moorehead, Sarah Wilcox and Tracy Kirkman. The Pennant teams played at Kew Country Club in the second round where once again the Waratahs were successful 5 nil against Harrington Waters A. The Wauchope Wattles went down to Forster/Tuncurry 3/2. Only eight ladies competed in the Stableford event for the Saturday Business Ladies on Saturday, April 9, with Karen Roods continuing her good form to take out the winner’s voucher with a score of 37 points. Barbara Varcoe was the runner up with 32 points.

“The gold medals we have as a state team are as much the Port Macquarie club’s as they are for me and the paddlers, especially when we had 12 Flamin’ Dragon team members dominate the squad.” Recognition of the hard work was publically announced in Dragon Boat circles with the CEO of Dragon Boats NSW, Glen Tasker, stating that ‘having dominated the NSW Championships, the Northern Region paddlers must be congratulated. The paddlers were not defeated during the regatta. Wauchope Men’s Veterans
IT was a great day for Wauchope Men’s Veteran Golf Club members on April 5 when 140 players hit off in the inaugural 4 person Ambrose. The winning team was Bert Splithoff, John Walters, Jim Bain and Kevin Miller with a score of 55&1/4. Runners up were Glenroy Smith, Geoffrey Todd, Ron Dixon and Leigh Glasspell with a score of 56 & 3/8. That was a great score and even a greater result when you consider that one member of that team, Ron Dixon turn 95 in July! Nearest the pin comp was conducted over grades A, B and C on holes 4 and 18 with an overall NTP on Hole 7. On the 4th, A grade was won by Richard Pierce with 1.3m, B grade went to Chris Kemp with 1.4m and remarkably there was not one player in C grade that made the green! On the 18th hole, A grade was won by Neil Gavin with 0.870m, B grade went to Bob Spratford with 3.57m and C grade was won by Gus Digiorgio with 5.37m. On the 7th hole, the winner was Graham Cumming with 3.18m. In the ball comp, balls went down to a team score of 59 & ¾. This gave 11 teams or 43 players, a bonus ball each. Next week’s game is a best two of four stableford.
