Hero of the polls From hospital to the hustings
By CHRISTINA PARKIN FOR one seasoned election campaigner, Carole Vernon, the battle is not yet over. And although current politics is short of heroes, it appears the electorate of Cowper has one. The election we ‘had to have’, the delay in a decisive result and confusion resulting from a campaign of negativity and vitriole, has given the everyday voter less confidence in politicians, the leaders of our nation. Carole has risen from the ashes of the election, determined to continue the fight for her health. “It’s time to let the younger ones rise up and continue,” says Ms Vernon, introspectively. Carole displayed extraordinary bravery and self-sacrifice during the recent campaign for the seat of Cowper. Having major surgery on Tuesday, June 21, Carole booked herself out of hospital the following afternoon to travel to Port Macquarie
to attend the ‘Meet the Candidates Forum’ that night. “I just could not miss the forum – I just had to be there to represent the Greens,” she said. “I’ve been working far too hard for many years and particularly the last three years, to let the issue of my health interfere with presenting the issues affecting our country’s future. “We always knew it was going to be a challenge and different to the 2013 Federal campaign when we got 12.3% of the vote, particularly with the electoral boundary changes. “The inclusion of Port Macquarie with many voters not knowing me and the loss of a strong proportion of ‘green’ voters had an impact.” Once the electoral boundary changes were announced, Carole’s team had to build up a campaign profile and pursue contacts in the media to promote the Greens’ branded message to those voters in the Port Macquarie region. • Continued Page 3

Home Instead has expo focus We are “ committed to
ensuring that our seniors are properly cared for
“
SINCE opening Home Instead Senior Care in October, 2015, owners Rod Lewis and Scott Marsh, together with their dedicated team of CAREGivers have grown the business extensively. Home Instead Senior Care provide nonmedical in-home care for seniors to continue living independently in their own homes. As a reflection of the growth of Home Instead Rod and Scott are delighted to announce that Kara Nicholson is joining the team in a parttime capacity to undertake and drive a variety of community projects. Kara was born and rasied in Port Macquarie and brings with her a wealth of experience including marketing and communications officer for St Joseph’s Family Services and Alzhiemer’s Australia NSW as the Dementia Friendly Community Project Officer. Kara says: “I’m excited to commence working with Rod and Scott at Home Instead Senior Care. It is a privilege to work with an organisation that provides care and support to seniors in our local community. To me it is essential that we provide our seniors personal, responsive, reliable and local care in their own homes for as long as possible. I firmly believe that Home Instead Senior Care offers exactly that; care to seniors with a large dose of the personal element!” The first project on Kara’s list will be to focus on the upcoming Seniors Info Expos to be held in September. Rod and Scott saw a gap in the market earlier in the year and held the inaugural Seniors Info Expo at Port City Bowling Club in April, which was a resounding success. This has led them to investigate taking the Expo out into the broader community and make it easier for
Scott Marsh, Kara Nicholson and Rod Lewis ‘go the extra mile’ at Home Instead Senior Care seniors to access information on the care services that are available to them. “There are many seniors that don’t have the capacity to come to Port Macquarie and attend the expo,” said Scott. “Rod and I decided to embrace the opportunity and take the expo to them. We are committed to ensuring that our
seniors are properly cared for; what better way to do that than providing an expo that showcases the large variety of services available locally? With Kara’s experience she will be the driving force taking the expos throughout the Hastings and Macleay Valleys in September.” The dates have been set and there is an
opportunity to be an exhibitor in the upcoming expos at the following venues: Wauchope RSL Thursday September 1; Laurieton LUSC Thursday September 15; and Kempsey RSL Thursday September 29. For more information on how to become an exhibitor you can contact the Home Instead Senior Care office 02 6583 9944 and talk to either Scott or Kara. If you are a senior who would like to discuss options about the in-home care services available call 02 6583 9944 to book your initial Complimentary Care Consultation. Home Instead Senior Care offers a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week service (including public holidays) and can include personal grooming, showering, dressing, meal preparation, medication reminders, transport to appointments, shopping and social outings. Rod says: “We really go the extra mile to provide the best, most appropriate in-home care. Why? Because to us, it’s personal.”

A graceful ageing T’ai Chi classes a healthy boost, say locals
By SUE PATERICK TAOIST monk, Cheun San’fung first initiated the graceful and gentle practice of T’ai Chi Ch’uan back in the 13th century to promote good health and wellbeing. He developed a series of exercises with a number of movements known as the ‘form’, which was combined with meditation and breath control. According to the Macleay Valley’s own T’ai Chi Ch’uan Master, Wayne Mossop, this ancient art teaches thought without diversion and emphasizes the importance of keeping your mind and body in good health throughout your life. The long-term benefits of T’ai Chi Ch’uan are physical and mental stability. So it is excellent for everything from arthritis to good circulation and depression. “It can formulate a new lease on life,” Wayne said. “For the older community it can aid in falls prevention strategies because it improves inward and outward balance.” In fact running falls prevention classes with Kempsey Shire Council 12 years ago was how
Wayne started teaching T’ai Chi Ch’uan. He then ran classes through the local U3A until enrolments grew too big and it was decided to establish an incorporated body. Wayne learnt T’ai Chi Ch’uan back in 1973 when it wasn’t really well-known in Australia. He was involved in other martial arts, but classes in T’ai Chi Ch’uan weren’t available so he found a Chinese Master to teach him. Forty-three years later both beginners and advanced T’ai Chi Ch’uan advocates can learn from Wayne’s extensive experience at his weekly classes. “Beginners need to show perseverance,” he said. “If they turn up every Thursday it will improve their life.” Beginners first learn the form before going on to the advanced classes where more of the form is taught, along with the finer points of breathing and meditation. “Seeing people progress though the form and learn something that they can do for the rest of their lives is a buzz for me because I know how much they’ll get out of it,” he said. Shan Blake has been attending Wayne’s
classes for 12 years and thinks he is an excellent teacher. “He is very precise and tells you which muscles you are protecting and how good it is for you.” Now in her seventies, Shan still feels 50 and loves the fact she is doing something good for her that she can fit into her daily routine. “T’ai Chi Ch’uan is very good for your balance when you get older and become unsure of your legs,” she said. “You don’t want to fall over and break something because that can have dire consequences.” Wayne’s T’ai Chi Ch’uan classes begin each school term and run for about 10 weeks. It costs $5 to join the incorporation and $5 for each class, which is paid in advance. Classes will resume on Thursday July 21 at the Masonic Hall in Tozer Street, West Kempsey. Beginners should arrive at 8.45am to enrol for a 9am start, and the advanced class begins at 10am. For more information contact Shan on 0448 816 101 or Wayne 0427 625 541.

• From Page 1 Carole also identified that there appeared to be a parochial response against Luke Hartsuyker simply because he came from Coffs Harbour and the redistribution had been foisted upon Port Macquarie. Despite encouragement from supporters, Carole held a more reserved judgement that she would be happy to get 8-10% of the vote, even before Rob Oakeshott came along. “I wished he came along a bit earlier so we really got to know what policies he stood for strongly,” she said. “People in Port Macquarie knew, but up here in Coffs, Rob was flocked to as an alternative to the lack of action in Cowper by the Nationals. “We’re just on 6.3% at the moment, and if it was not for the Oakeshott factor, we may have reached our goal of 8-10%. “It’s been interesting – I was quite happy with the candidates’ forums but the Nationals got quite vindictive and nasty toward Rob Oakeshott toward the end. “I suppose it’s a democracy but it’s a wobbly old thing at the moment. I think we’re in for a very, very rocky road involving big discussions in both parties, but I don’t see the necessary qualities in the two options for government leadership to build a workable situation. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t last the full three years.” When asked what the future holds for The Greens in the mid north coast, Carole replied that they have to get into succession planning for the next State and Federal election and get some of the younger ‘Greens’ trained up from the 200 members in the region. Carole and John have been strongly encouraged to start to think of themselves now that Carole has had a major threat to her health. “My son has said ‘you’ve got to stop treating this as a hobby, because it’s a hobby that’s draining you financially’.” For Carole, her surgery has resulted in ‘some slight discomfort’ with sensations of aching and tiredness. “I just kept going, so now we’re going away for a few days relaxing prior to further treatment … and then we will be supporting the local council elections,” says Carol of her immediate future. “I’ve had wonderful messages of support – it seems that every woman who knows me, ‘just knows’. “Even Luke sent me a message that he ‘couldn’t have had a worthier opponent’. “I absolutely loathe the policies of the party, but I don’t dislike Luke Hartsuyker - we’ve both sat out at the ‘bridal table of candidates’ and I respect that we can have a repartee without being nasty and that’s how it ought to be.”

Paragliders are a Bonny attraction I WOULD like to reply to the article by Ramise of Bonny Hills regarding the Mid North Coast Paragliders Club in your letter of the week dated July 7. Roundabout record? IS this a record? When my wife and I returned
from overseas in mid-October last year, we had to detour via Findlay Avenue because work on the Hastings River Drive roundabout had already commenced. Contrary to a recent TV news report that it had taken 6 months to complete, it has in fact taken in excess of 8.5 months. Some may consider this a record time for a roundabout approach upgrade. Based on this duration, I shudder to think how long it is going to take for the planned upgrade of Ocean Drive. G Haynes Port Macquarie

Thumbs Down TO the children bowling over-sized citrus fruit down my road - such a waste! They should eat them and get a good dose of Vitamin C.
Thumbs Up TO two 18-year-olds, who on their way home from Kempsey to Eungai Rail came across a dead Kangaroo on the road around Clybucca. They pulled over, decided to pull the kangaroo off the road to avoid someone having an accident. As they did, they noticed movement in her pouch, they pulled a little Joey out. One wrapped it in his shirt and took it home. They rang NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc. (WIRES) at South West Rocks. They came and took the Joey to care for it. I am so proud of those two 18-year-olds.
AFTER the long-winded federal election campaign, we finally have a Federal Government! Congratulations to all those candidates who won their seats and thank you to all the candidates that participated in our editorial spreads and supported our small local business throughout their campaigns. I have to say though, this was one of the ‘dirtiest’ campaigns I have ever witnessed! I have watched, horrified, some of the low blows being dealt out right across the board and just cringe to think this sort of behaviour is deemed acceptable. Sorry, but, 90% of the last 10 days of campaigning was uncalled for and, realistically doesn’t look like it is going away any time soon! Wait! There’s more. We are just eight weeks away from our Local Government Council elections. I just hope and pray that our local candidates who decide to run (you need to nominate by August 1), don’t run the same sort of smear campaigns as their federal counterparts. I don’t think the community can deal with another hefty dose of the negativity we have just witnessed - not to mention it is totally unnecessary. To the candidates. We will be watching. You will be in the public eye. Keep your nose clean and your minds open! To our readers. Tell us what you would like to see the new councils achieve.
Thumbs Up TO the wonderful staff at Social Grounds coffee shop in Gordon Street. My elderly husband had a bad fall in the street and they came out and helped him inside, mopped up the blood, gave him a cold drink to settle him down. Then refused to take payment for the drink. God bless you and thank you!
TO the inconsiderate person or persons responsible for dumping asbestos waste at the Sherwood Bridge recently. This is a popular spot for swimming and fishing and locals monitor and keep the area tidy each week. A huge thank you to the council employee who cleaned the mess.
Thumbs Up TO the rural fire brigade who on Sunday, July 3 effected a ‘hazard’ burn off at the end of Riverside Drive and adjoining bush, I extend a huge thank you. This long-time resident was very happy to see much of the tall seeded grass adjoining her boundary disappear. Thank you again lads and lasses.

League celebrates 60th birthday By SUE PATERICK
Members of the Macleay Pensioners League Carol Elliott, new President Maureen Mavin, Kelvin Hudson, out-going President Margaret Hudson and Elaine Maguire all enjoy the friendship and fun the organisation offers and are looking forward to another 60 years
“
My husband and I both look forward to going every month. We’re like a big family. really friendly group. “My husband and I both look forward to going every month,” she said. “We’re like a big family.” Carol Elliott, who runs the trading table, also goes for the friendship. “I’d be lost without it,” she said. Outgoing President, Margaret Hudson, has been a member for 20 years and still wouldn’t miss a meeting.
“
OVER tea in blue and white china cups and homemade scones with jam and cream, several members of the Macleay Pensioners League have gathered in the current President’s cosy kitchen to discuss a huge event. For the past 60 years the League’s members have been enjoying friendship, companionship and fun, and will celebrate this momentous birthday over lunch next month. This wonderful organisation all began in 1956 when Macleay Valley local, Mrs Kit Croad, won the lottery and used her winnings to put on a lunch for the shire’s senior citizens. The event was such a success, it was decided to form a committee to establish a regular group. The Macleay Pensioners League (MPL) was born, with Mrs Croad as its first President. This altruistic lady was President for the next 26 years and helped establish a permanent site for the organisation in Clyde Street. The hall itself was once the Austral Street Bowling Club, which was washed off its footings in the 1949 flood. When it was decided to rebuild the bowling club on a new site across the road, the MPL’s Committee organised possession of the old building and had it moved to its current site. The League still owns the Pensioners Hall and carpark and meet there on the first Monday of every month at 10.30am. Apart from getting together with friends, the League runs a raffle and a trading table and it provides interesting guest speakers and other entertainment. There is also Bingo and indoor bowls, plus monthly bus trips and an annual Christmas party. New members are always welcome. To supplement their funds, the League rents out its hall to other local organisations. Elaine Maguire enjoys attending the League’s regular get-togethers because it is a
Her husband and hall trustee, Kelvin, says the meetings are good fun. For 19 years Margaret has held a position on the League’s management committee and is retiring from the top job because of family commitments and other interests. She passes her baton over to Maureen Mavin next month. Maureen took on the job to keep the League going. She started attending meetings about 15
years ago with her Mum, and they both looked forward to going. And, like her fellow members, she also enjoys going because of the friendship and companionship. The Macleay Pensioners League will celebrate its 60th birthday on Monday, August 15, from 11.30 am. The Anglican Church Hall ladies will be providing a sumptuous two-course lunch and a ukulele group will provide entertainment. The meal will cost $10 to be paid at the door and bookings should be made before Monday August 1. Contact Margaret on 6562 6690.

STATE MATTERS

NSW Australian of the Year, Ms Elizabeth Broderick is pictured with Year 4 student, Kayley McFarlane and Holly Campbell, Year 5 from Hastings Public School
Voices of inspiration Who is your ‘Aussie of the Year?’
By CHRISTINA PARKIN 2016 NSW Australian of the Year recipients, Dr Catherine Keenan, Ms Elizabeth Broderick AO and Ms Melissa Abu-Gazaleh, visited schools, community groups and a hospital in the region during their recent three-day tour to inspire communities and encourage nominations for the 2017 Australian of the Year Awards. Students at Hastings Public School attended a session facilitated by professional MC and host, Andrew Gill, whose hobby as a magician certainly had the young students captivated. The students flocked to the recipients at the end of the session, eager to ‘high five’ the inspirational women. “There’s been so many beaut moments on the tour,” said Ms Broderick. “Although there is often an absence of women’s voices in leadership, but what our presence shows the students is that their aspirations can be set high. “The students are at an impressionable age, with future attitudes forming. For young boys, it shows that women can, and do, hold positions
of respect.” When pointing out that all the Australian of the Year recipients on the stage were women, Ms Broderick quipped: “You’ve got to love that.” Professor Gordian Fulde, star of the Logieaward winning ‘Kings Cross ER: St Vincent’s Hospital’ in his role as the Medical Director of the St Vincent’s ER unit joined the tour in Port Macquarie on Friday, July 1, for an inspirational session titled ‘On the Couch’ at the Glasshouse. Local residents had the opportunity to meet the recipients and learn about their significant achievements in their chosen areas of work. The recipients finished their visit with a guided tour of the facilities at the University of New South Wales Port Macquarie Medical Campus and Port Macquarie Base Hospital in the afternoon. The NSW Tour of Honour also served as a reminder that nominations are now open for the 2017 Australian of the Year Awards. “The Australian of the Year Awards acknowledges the contribution to Australian society by our fellow citizens,” said Australia
Day Council of NSW Chairman, Angelos Frangopoulos. “We’re really pleased to be able to bring these extraordinary Australians to rural communities and schools and, with nominations for the 2017 Australian of the Year Awards closing in early August, it’s a timely reminder for people to tell us who they think is worthy of recognition in the next awards by nominating someone who deserves attention. The public are encouraged to nominate people they believe deserve to be acknowledged for their hard work and service to the community in four different categories: • Australian of the Year • Senior Australian of the Year (65 years and over) • Young Australian of the Year (16 to 30 years) • Australia’s Local Hero Nominations can be made at www. australianoftheyear.org.au from now until August 7, 2016.
DIABETES Awareness Week: This week is National Diabetes Week which aims to raise awareness of diabetes - the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia. Over 400,000 people in NSW are selfidentified as having diabetes and that number is increasing at a faster rate than heart disease and cancer. It’s concerning that 280 Australians develop diabetes a day. You don’t have to be overweight or elderly, but you will have to spend the rest of your life managing your diabetes. Prevention is always the best cure, and the NSW Government has introduced numerous prevention initiatives to encourage people to get healthy. These include: Get Healthy at Work is a free, state-wide service for all businesses in NSW. Get Healthy at Work targets modifiable potential lifestyle risk factors for chronic disease including healthy weight, physical activity, healthy eating, active travel, smoking and harmful alcohol consumption. For more information visit www.GetHealthyatWork.com. au Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service is a free telephone coaching service supporting NSW adults to make sustained improvements in healthy eating, physical activity, reducing alcohol consumption and achieving or maintaining a healthy weight. For more information visit www.gethealthynsw. com.au Go4Fun - Healthy Children Initiative is an obesity treatment program delivered through the Healthy Children Initiative for children who are above a healthy weight and their families, and has reached over 7,000 families across NSW to date. For more information visit www.go4fun. com.au Make Healthy Normal social marketing campaign was launched in June 2015 to motivate people to reassess their current lifestyle choices, to encourage new healthy eating and active living behaviours and create a new, healthy normal. For more information visit www.MakeHealthyNormal.nsw.gov.au Complications of diabetes can be minimised or even prevented through prompt diagnosis, effective control of blood glucose, lipids and blood pressure, attention to diet and physical activity and avoiding tobacco. School has a giving heart By CHRISTINA PARKIN
AS the temperature drops, most will plug in a heater or crank up the air conditioner, but there are some in our community who look to their local neighbourhood centre for whatever assistance is available. Some weeks ago, the families of children attending the Port Macquarie Community Preschool cleaned out their cupboards and donated a myriad of spare blankets, quilts and warm clothing to the Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre, located on the corner of Muston and Dodds Street. Combining a recent barbeque breakfast with the selection of breads, bakery goods, frozen items and vegetables that REAP by OzHarvest picked up from local retailers, was a good occasion to offer the donated woollens to those who are disadvantaged, struggling with basic daily living needs, or just doing it tough. “We can always find members of our local community who can use what we offer here – every little bit makes a huge difference to our clients,” says Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre Coordinator, Julie Trowbridge. The REAP by OzHarvest service is principally conducted by Michael Farrawell and Katrina Humble, Pastor for the C3 Church, who does all the administration and applies for grants to keep the service going. Michael and his team of two other drivers, also collect food on Sunday afternoons and deliver to the Wauchope Neighbourhood Centre in Waugh Street for distribution on Monday mornings from 9.30am. Five volunteers also sort and bag up the donated items.
The two soup kitchens each in Wauchope and Port Macquarie, the Big Red Bus on Tuesday afternoons (except school holidays), the Salvation Army and the Youth Refuge are also recipients of the rescued food delivery service provided by REAP by OzHarvest. Some wonderful neighbours and visitors often drop in to the Neighbourhood Centre with produce straight from their gardens. Other donations of items are welcome on Monday to Thursdays from 9-3pm. A gold coin donation is requested each day from everyone who visits this food service. You can contact Julie Trowbridge on 6584 1914 for more information.
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council is passionate about building community partnerships with not-for-profit organisations who play an important role in bringing to life local projects that have a broad local community benefit. The 2016/2017 Community Grants Program, Round 1 will open at the end of July with $90,000 in grant funding on offer to help local community groups. Director Tricia Bulic said: “Port Macquarie Hastings Council is keen to continue to build on the fantastic partnerships already established with our community through offering the Community Grants Program once again. We look forward to seeing what projects can be supported through these funds and the great results the entire community can benefit from.” Community groups are encouraged to find out more by attending one of the upcoming information sessions in Laurieton, Wauchope and Port Macquarie. Council staff will provide an overview of the grants on offer and guide attendees through the process of completing and submitting an application. Last financial year, Council distributed approximately $180,000 to over 50 local community organisations. Information Sessions will take place at: • Port Macquarie - July 18 from 5pm to 6pm at Port Macquarie Council Chambers; • Laurieton - July 19 from 12pm to 1pm at Laurieton United Services Club; • Wauchope - July 22 from 12pm to 1pm at Wauchope Senior Citizen Centre. Applications open on July 25 and close on Friday Augus 26. Successful recipients will be announced in September. To register for one of the workshops, or for more information visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au/communitygrants, email council@pmhc.nsw.gov.au, call 6581 8111 or drop into any of Council’s Customer Service Centres.

How long have you lived in the Hastings? I was born and bred here. What do you love most about the Hastings? The easy accessibility of the area which has grown considerably introducing new businesses to town every year. And the location – I would not live anywhere else. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I have worked in the retail trade for over 30 years and love meeting different people every day. What do you like the least? Having to travel for 90 minutes each day for work. How do you start your day? With a good breakfast. What do you do in your spare time? I am the current president of the Port Macquarie Hastings Municipal Band and the Mac Adams Centre. These positions keep myself and the committee busy either playing or organising performances, fundraising and the general running of the band. I am also researching my family tree. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Belonging to the band since its inception in 1979 and now being president. Many awards have been achieved over those years including NSW State C and D Grade Champions and East Coast Australia Champions. I also enjoy being part of an organisation which is able to entertain people.

Thanks, now it’s back to work! THANK-YOU for all of your support this election, which now allows me to continue to work in all corners of the Cowper electorate for every resident of the Mid North Coast. I particularly thank all of the volunteers who have contributed throughout the campaign, all the way through to and including polling day on July 2. To deliver for you locally, we must continue to have stable government nationally and your support allows me to continue to deliver this. I am honoured to continue as the Federal member for Cowper and take over the mantle from my colleague Dr David Gillespie as Port Macquarie’s conduit to Canberra. Once the make-up of the Government is finalised and writs are issued, the next stage for Port Macquarie is for me to progress the commitments made by the Coalition to the city. The Coalition has pledged $1.25 million to complete an upgrade of the Port Macquarie Airport terminal. The airport is a key to further unlocking the tourism and business potential of the Mid North Coast, so this is a priority project for the Federal, State and local governments. Sports is an important part of life in Port Macquarie and the commitment of $100,000 to an upgrade of Oxley Oval and $20,000 for new and improved cricket training facilities at Stuart Park sports fields builds on the Coalition Government’s $2.8 million investment in the

Regional Indoor Sports Centre. The biggest road infrastructure project in regional Australia continues to power on through the Cowper electorate. I had the privilege to meet some of the staff working on the Pacific Highway upgrade recently during a tour with Premier Mike Baird. The engineering feat of crossing the Hastings River is impressive and it was a hive of activity as we surveyed what has been achieved so far in constructing this vital bridge. From Port Macquarie to Ballina, construction of the Pacific Highway Upgrade will continue to drive Mid North Coast business and job growth for years to come – providing 4,000 direct jobs and 12,000 indirect jobs between now and 2020. Other roads in the Port Macquarie area will benefit from Coalition Government programs, including a $55 million fund for Port MacquarieHastings Council for important local projects, bridge and road upgrades for the period up to 2018. Once again, thank you for your support.
CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
I AM honoured at the support given to me once again by the people of the Lyne electorate. The wonderful support shown to both Charlotte and I locally since I took on this role in 2013 has been incredible and from the bottom of our hearts we thank the community for their ongoing faith in the job I have been doing as Federal Member. I have worked very hard since 2013 trying to get around a big electorate listening to the issues and concerns people are raising at the Federal level and I have been taking those concerns back to the discussions I have with my colleagues in Canberra. As we have continued to take action to repair the budget to fix Labor’s debt and deficit mess, I have been delighted to see that under the Coalition’s first three budgets, this electorate has received record funding. Aged care funding in Lyne has increased from $90-million a year in 2013 to $105-million a year today, an extra $2-billion has been made available to fast track the Pacific Highway upgrade between the Oxley Highway and Kempsey and we’ve secured record funding for the Hastings and Manning for roads and infrastructure. Throughout the election the Coalition put forward a number of positive policies in the local area as part of our jobs and growth strategy.
Skedaddle while I watch the movie my
WHEN I was a young boy at Cardiff, one of my mother’s favourite words was ‘skedaddle’. I took ‘skedaddle’ to mean something like ‘get lost’. On a cold and wet day recently, I watched the movie ‘Cheyenne Autumn’. I love westerns, but I can just imagine the people at the TV station saying something like: “They’ve seen this a hundred times, but show it again; they might not notice”. Surely other people like watching a good western, even if Carroll Baker at the end of a long walk looked as though she had just strolled through the garden smelling the roses. John Ford’s film told the story of 300 half-starved Cheyennes’ long walk from the reservation in the Oklahoma Territory to their home in Wyoming. It was a long movie, with the so-called intermission taken up by a bizarre short segment starring James Stewart. Some outlets refused to show the Stewart segment, because it had nothing to do with the remainder of the movie. The role of the Cheyennes was supposedly taken by modern Navajo Indians, who slipped in some off-colour jokes spoken in Navajo. Twice in the movie, (we called them pictures when we went to the ‘Star’ at Cardiff in my younger days), they used the word skedaddle.
LAURIE BARBER
I said to my wife: “Here’s where they say skedaddle.” But she wasn’t that interested. On the second occasion, a man near a railway line was asked if he had seen them and he replied that they seemed ‘to have skedaddled’. The Cheyennes’ walk started in 1878. My thoughts were that the word ‘skedaddled’ didn’t enter the English language until well after this. Investigations showed that I was wrong in the assumption. It was an American Civil War word, although I still wonder how this backwoods man standing in the snow beside the railway line in the middle of nowhere and warming his hands by a fire, knew of the word ‘skedaddle’. After all, they didn’t have computers, television or radio in those days to enable him to keep up with the rest of the world. They probably didn’t even yell out ‘paper’ as the trains went by. My big Oxford says the word ‘skedaddle’, is of uncertain origin, was probably Swedish or
Danish, and it became prominent in the Civil War. The American Civil War lasted from 1861 to 1865. Also spelt ‘skidaddle’, the word’s meaning was something like fleeing the battlefield. The word, according to Michael Quinion, crossed the Atlantic quickly and appeared in Anthony Trollope’s novel ‘The Last Chronicle of Barset’ in 1867. Although some words in other languages have sounded similar to ‘skedaddle’, almost nobody can pinpoint the word’s origins. My big Oxford says the word is colloquial, and adds “probably a fanciful formation”. August 10, 1861, is the first use in print that I could find. On that day, the New York Tribune said: “No sooner did the traitors discover their approach than they ‘skidaddled’ (a phrase the Union boys up here apply to the good use the seceshers make of their legs in time of danger).” The big dictionary says that in general use, the word means ‘to depart hurriedly’. It could find only one use of skedaddle in the milk sense when the New York Times in 1863 said somebody was ‘skedaddling all that milk’. I have no idea what that meant. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Geoff is still bowling along By CHRISTINA PARKIN
ASPIRING to be 100 years of age is not a common ‘bucket list’ item, but for Phillip Geoffrey Thomas, he never worried about it – it just happened. Geoff, pictured, as he is known to his friends, celebrated his century of living with his fellow residents and staff of Regis Manor in Port Macquarie last Saturday, July 9. Having outlived his family, Geoff had his nephew, David Thomas and David’s wife, present to join in the festivities on the day. “I’ve had a good life – I can’t complain about it,” claimed Geoff. “Sports were always good exercise and all our family loved to play a lot of sports, whether tennis or hockey – we even had a bit of a court in the back yard,” explained Mr Thomas. Geoff grew up and lived in Lithgow
for many years before moving to the coast. Although his first job was selling shoes for the local Co-op, Geoff worked in the local Lithgow munitions factory until the end of the second world war (1945). Geoff then decided to go into business running corner stores in Lithgow ‘that sold everything’, according to his nephew. Geoff recalls his love of cycling all around the state, but particularly in the central west and around Bathurst. He loved to compete with his teams in both track and road racing before he married his first wife, Lil. When Lil died suddenly, Geoff cared for their son, Neville, with the help of staff who covered for him while Geoff was away buying for the shop. It was on one of these occasions in 1958 that Geoff had to be located in Sydney when his son
had died tragically at the age of 14 in a shooting accident. It was a few years later that his partner of 40 years, Rosie, came to Lithgow and helped Geoff in his shops and teamed with him in tennis until the late 70s when they moved to North Haven on his retirement and then into Port Macquarie in Innes Street. Trying to keep busy, Geoff and his brother Eric bought a farm at Moorlands to grow and sell vegetables to local shops. Geoff had a trusty exercise bike he used daily for nearly 30 years, and it had to make the move with him when he followed Rosie to live in Regis Manor in 2008. Although Rosie has since passed and Geoff is a little wobbly on his feet, he still loves his daily walks and his lawn bowls.
We’re suffering election fatigue WELL, just when we’ve all had enough of elections, another one is almost upon us. That’s right, when you read this, there will only be eight weeks until the Port MacquarieHastings Council elections which are on Saturday, September 8. This is timely because it was about eight weeks before when the elections were due in 2012 that I decided to run as a candidate. The five years of administration had been frustrating for many of us and I decided that I could either continue to whinge about it, or put my hand up to help fix it. As chair of Council’s Economic Development Steering Group (EDSG), I have been in an ideal position to help drive some positive changes,

and good progress has been made. Councillors and Council staff have worked very closely with local business leaders to address many different aspects of the local economy such as tourism marketing, industry action plans, and a strategic approach to major infrastructure and future road network planning and investment.

priorities for all Councillors. Glasshouse governance and management has improved to the extent that the net operating position for 2016 is an improvement of about $1million compared with 2012. A great result - which means more money for capital works and road maintenance. Road re-sealing has now occurred in many of the villages over the past two years, and major reconstruction works on some of our busier roads have improved the state of our roads markedly. So with a new council election just around the corner, there is still plenty more to do, and once again, I’m putting my hand up for election. But this time it’s to ensure the good progress continues for the next four years.

But by far the number one priority for the EDSG has been to ensure the development of an innovative, efficient, business friendly and solutions-focussed culture within Council. This has not been easy, and it certainly hasn’t been an overnight revolution, but my view is that solid progress has been made, with the General Manager being a passionate advocate. It is early days yet, but the culture of the organisation is far more closely aligned to community expectations than where it was after five years of administration. From a broader perspective, two areas that were big issues during the election campaign in 2012 were the Glasshouse and the state of our roads. Unsurprisingly, these became high

THE Kew Corner Store is a good example of how great customer service can bring a business back to life after a highway bypass. Located on the corner of the ‘old’ highway (now Nancy Bird Walton Drive) and Kendall Road, Staffan Andler has continued to offer great coffee and fresh tasty ‘fast food’ for itinerant travellers and workers who venture off the highway. Although his base trade is locals, the extended hours from 5am to 7pm on week-days and 6am to 5pm on other days means that dropping in to the busy Kew Corner Store is sure to be rewarded. Staffan has made a commitment to supplying as much of his stock as possible from local growers, producers and suppliers.

Staffan and his staff have created a friendly and cosy environment to sit and enjoy a coffee and a chat. With the construction of a ramp from the parking area to the back entrance, prams and wheelchairs now have an easy access. There’s even room for the kids to run around the adjoining yard, overlooking the golf course. Coming to Australia in 1990 from Sweden, Staffan decided that Australia was the place to stay. Working since as a chef, data cabler and in a retail store at Cowra, Staffan loves to talk with his customers. Only a few months ago, he was identified by a traveller who remembered him from Cowra, dispensing similar recipe advice! “I like people and grew up in a small village with people knowing each other. Australia is friendlier than Sweden – and a much nicer climate,” he says. “I like being involved with the local community and helping people.”

Top left: Book sales attract avid readers to find books they haven’t already read. Right: Batar School building is now the home of the Bookends@Kendall store Entertainer, Bob Berrigan, enjoys playing his part in recreating a piano bar inside an AATKings coach
Holiday fun on wheels AN invitation to climb aboard and enjoy a cuppa on the ‘Piano Bar’ coach was met with delight last Friday when the AATKings marketing team came to the Hastings. Passers-by were invited aboard while the bus was parked in Bold Street Laurieton. Climbing up the steps was rewarded with the sight of lounges, dimly lit lamps and a singer seated at a piano positioned at the back of the bus. Local Taree entertainer, Bob Berrigan, sang and played piano for the Friday morning shoppers. “It is a fun spin on giving people a taste of quality coach travel,” explained Kate Reekie,
Marketing Manager for AATKings. “It provides an interesting platform to talk about holidays, while providing entertainment for our partners and their clientele. “Two years ago, we re-created a lawn bowls pitch and the challenge was being able to park on a level enough road. “It took a week to transform this coach and secure the piano at the rear. “The concept has been so well received by all that come aboard that we have also received offers by musicians to hire the bus. “We may have to reconsider returning the coach to its original purpose.”
Make sure you book in for this sale DO you enjoy a good read? Well, Bookends@ Kendall is holding a huge second-hand book sale on Saturday, July 16, at the Kendall Hall from 9am. “Book lovers will have the opportunity to fill an entire shopping bag for $5 from a wide range of books,” says Michelle Lopert, book sale coordinator. “Bargain hunters will have a field day filling their bags, and this year we have a big selection. We’ll be serving cappuccinos and homemade snacks to revive exhausted bargain hunters.” The Bookends store is located next door to the Kendall Hall, higher up the hill. It was once the old Batar School and received a total make-over with a Kendall Op Shop grant.
Created in 2007, it is now a thriving bookshop and book exchange, with a monthly book club. “Bookends is a community non-profit venture that is run entirely by volunteers and relies on book donations,” Ms Lopert added. “Book prices are purposely kept low to foster a healthy turnover of books and to encourage reading and literacy.” So mark Saturday, July 16, on your calendar, pop over to Kendall and make a day of it. There’s plenty of arts and crafts stores in Kendall and a cozy cafe. “What better way to get through winter than nestled in front of the fire with a bag of books. And they don’t come any cheaper,” says Ms Lopert.

LOCAL residents are not the only ones to have problems paying their bills. The Camden Haven Neighbourhood Centre (CHNC) now faces closure unless more income can be found. The centre was created in 1998 after a public meeting identified the need for a centrally located facility to offer information about local services and tourist information. “People won’t realise until it’s gone,” claims Julie Daniell, Publicity Officer for the CHNC. “We are deceptively under-highlighted as to all the services we offer.” Rent for two rooms of the Heritage-listed building is paid monthly to the Port Macquarie Hastings Council. The group of volunteers sell second hand bric-a-brac and books to raise enough money to cover their expenses of telephone, internet, office, electricity and insurance expenses.

“It’s the charges for insurance, both public liability and volunteer’s insurance, which is the major drain on our finances,” explains President/ Secretary, Joyce O’Neill. “We have written ‘begging letters’ recently and brought the matter to the attention of the Mayor, and besides a couple of small donations which we are grateful for, we have had little response. “Many of our volunteers are older citizens who are happy to share their time and local knowledge, but we don’t have the resources to create an annual fundraiser.” The CHNC handles over 4000 enquiries a year with 30-40% of these coming from tourists, particularly sailors who prefer to moor in the Camden Haven, rather than the Hastings River. Some of the volunteers are trained by the Australian Tax Office to give help to 400 people a year to lodge their tax returns online.

Unfortunately, a website can also be detrimental to a business if the site is not easy to navigate or is not user-friendly. With this in mind, a lot of thought, planning and collaboration, Your Local Independent has recently launched their new website. “For us the website had to be fresh, easy to navigate and most importantly enhance the newspaper and its end value to our readers and advertisers,” said Managing Editor Sandy Mackenzie, pictured. “Really it is just another platform to engage our readers with our advertisers and vice versa. The new website has some fantastic benefits for our advertisers which is very exciting for all concerned. “Our e-paper flip book is hosted on the website and as you read it - just as you would the print version - you can click on the advertisers’ web addresses, go directly to their website or email them directly from the e-paper. “It is a fabulous value-add for our clients at no extra cost to them.”

A very tasty business MID North Coast businesses involved in all aspects of the food industry, from paddock to plate, are invited to attend a free Industry Development Day, “Producer to Provedore”, from 8.30am to 12pm on Monday July 25 at Newman Senior Technical College in Port Macquarie. The Industry Development Day will be hosted by well-known chef Matt Golinski, who has beennamed as Producers’ Ambassador for Tastings on Hastings 2016, proudly presented by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Mayor Peter Besseling said: “The event offers farmers, producers, distributers, retail outlets, cafes, restaurants and chefs an opportunity to take part in a dynamic discussion about how to create a stronger focus on sustainably sourced local food within our Locavore region”.
Matt Golinski has worked with food businesses and Councils in other areas, such as Gympie, that have seen the benefits of making local food the focus of their regional identity, with flow on effects including building a sense of community, an increase in tourism and a stronger local economy. Attendees will have the chance to shape the future of the local food industry, network with other organisations, and learn how to make the sourcing and supply of local produce an advantage for their business. Matt will lead a workshop that explores how to build links between local suppliers and overcome challenges with availability and seasonality, creating menus around local produce, and ideas for marketing and promoting a local food focus. WEEKLY Grease is the word in Port from July 22 By CHRISTINA PARKIN FOR many teens, the movie ‘Grease’ has earnt a cult-like status, despite having been sanitised and tamed from the original stage show first performed in Chicago in 1971. Port Macquarie’s Players Theatre will be staging this original version from July 22 to August 14, directed by Hamish Keddie with young HSC student, Lindsay Kaul, taking on musical director. The stage-show musical, set in 1959 at a fictional Rydell High School, was named after the US 1950s working-class youth subculture known as ‘greasers’. The score attempts to recreate the sounds of early rock and roll while the story follows ten working-class teenagers as they navigate the complexities of peer pressure, politics, personal core values and love. References are made to social issues such as teenage pregnancy, peer pressure and gang violence; its themes include love, friendship, teenage rebellion, sexual exploration during adolescence, and, to some extent, class consciousness/class conflict. “This stage-show version is more realistic, gutsy and has lots of sexual innuendo,” says director, Hamish Keddie. “Our production is definitely not G rated more PG.” Hamish is a drama teacher with Hastings Secondary College – Port Macquarie Campus

and he says he has always wanted to direct a production of ‘Grease’. Hamish enjoyed directing ‘Camp Rock’ and ‘High School Musical’ in 2014, ‘Popstars’ in May and has a vision for bringing a more youthful cast and love of theatre into the Players Theatre organisation. “My leads for this production of ‘Grease’ are in their twenties and we have about 25 younger people here all involved with all sorts of roles – sound and lighting, music, set design and construction and costume,” explained Mr Keddie. The whole gang sings and dances around the summer romance of Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski’s, through such hit songs as ‘Greased Lightnin’, ‘We Go Together’, and ‘Mooning’, recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. Now back in the context of school, peerpressure and cliques, their relationship becomes a bit more complicated. Can Danny maintain his cool dude status and still get to make the demure Sandy his girl? “The Players Theatre have been very lucky to be able to perform this show as it is extremely hard to get the rights and not one word can be altered,” says Mr Keddie. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Glasshouse or online at www.playerstheatre.org. au

“
VETERAN local greyhound official Rex Nairn refuses to believe the sport is doomed in NSW. “Of course we will fight,” he says. “There is just too much at stake – too much to lose.” Nairn is president of the Hastings River Greyhound Racing Club, which has been based in Wauchope since 1953. However Nairn, like most greyhound fans, was rocked by the news last week that the NSW government is shutting down the sport. In a shock announcement, Premier Mike Baird, said greyhound racing in New South Wales would be banned from July 1, 2017. This came on the back of a special commission of inquiry which found overwhelming evidence of animal cruelty, including mass greyhound killings and live baiting. There are three greyhound tracks on the Mid North Coast – Wauchope, Taree and Kempsey. Nairn, 73, who has been involved in greyhound racing since he was 18, said momentum against the ban was growing rapidly. “A fighting fund of three-quarters of a million dollars has already been raised,” said Nairn. “Meetings have been scheduled. There are plenty of politicians on both sides of the fence who are against the ban. “I am very confident that the decision will be overturned. This fight is far from lost.” In announcing his reasons for the ban, Mr Baird said the inquiry found: • Between 48,000–68,000 dogs were killed in past 12 years in NSW because they were too slow or otherwise unsuitable for racing; • Live baiting is widespread, with about 10– 20 per cent of trainers engaged in the practice; • Greyhound Racing NSW had a policy of deliberately misreporting the number of dog deaths and injuries; • The industry is not capable of reforming over the short or medium term. Mr Baird said the Government had received
too much at stake.

(Photo: ROBERT BRANDOLINI) the report of the commission, conducted by former High Court judge Michael McHugh, and the findings were damning. The ban also comes after the ABC’s Four Corners program exposed widespread and extreme animal cruelty and cheating through the - Geoff Mitchell by two shots in an extra end. Wednesday Social Bowls was won by Mal Pye – Petr Gunn; consolation to Peter Willis – Bryce Stewart. Thursday Social Bowls winners were John Carn – Adrian Fakes and consolation to Bruce Chapman – Max Glasse. Friday social winners were Dave Dickman – Brian Stokes and consolation to Terry Murray – Eric Faulkes – Ron Thompson. On Sunday, 48 bowlers played with prizes to the teams of J Wallis, J Scholz and J Munson.

The winners on the day by a fan of the cards was Kaye MacKenzie, Rhonda Schubert and Ann Swanson. The consolation prize was picked up by Fay Paine and Lil Allen. Saturday, July 9 we had 2 rinks of social bowls, the winners with the lowest winning margin was Dot Galbraith, Tina Hamilton and Sally Webber. use of live baiting to entice and train greyhounds, which then led to the special commission. However Nairn said the industry had not been given a chance to reform and stamp out the ‘the few bad eggs who are a part of every industry and sport’.

WEDNESDAY, July 6, saw 107 ladies play in a Stroke event, the first round of our championships
“The people who have made this decision have no idea of the flow-on affect,” he said. “Locally there are plenty of people involved in the sport of greyhound racing. But what about the people who come into the area for a race meeting. What about the petrol they buy, the meals they buy, the overnight accommodation. “There are so many more people than just the immediate greyhound fraternity who are affected by this.” Nairn said non-TAB tracks such as Wauchope were a big part of the solution, however ‘greyhound and government bureaucrats just don’t understand’. “In the past 12 years the number of meetings allocated to non-TAB tracks have been reduced dramatically, about 500 a year,” he said. “So do the maths . That’s 500 meetings, times 10 races a meetings, times eight dogs a race. That equates to 40,000 less opportunities to race a dog in NSW. “And the dogs that go around at the non-TAB tracks are mostly the slower greyhounds. So the answer is right there in front of them.” Nairn said Wauchope was now down to 15 meetings a year, from about 40 when he took over as president in 1998. His wife Yvonne has been club treasurer since 1999. “Yvonne didn’t particularly like greyhound racing before that,” says Nairn. “Now she loves it. She even owns a race dog, Adjustable Duke. She’s devastated by the news and is so concerned for the thousands who owe their livelihoods to the sport.” and for the July monthly medal. The A Grade Winner was Yvonne Heslin 73, r/up Sheena Gunn 74; B Grade Winner Margaret Perkins 73 r/up Nathalie Tessede 77 c/b; C Grade Winner Marian Leonard 78 c/b r/up Maureen Armstrong; placegetters to 82 c/b. Ego is now Sharks’ concern AS Your Local Independent was going to press the final blows of Origin 2016 were being landed. Whatever the result in that interstate war – we already know where the trophy is headed this year – the fallout at club level is pretty clear. Barring any major injuries, the major winners as we head into the final lap of the NRL season (we are up to round 19 of 26) are the Sharks. Not only were they the big improvers of 2016 pre-Origin, but like the Cowboys and Broncos, they also had to shoulder a large rep commitment and yet have come through as leaders on the ladder. Their 26-10 win last weekend over Penrith was the icing on the cake. They were without five players, yet as YLI suggested, the winning culture has pervaded the entire squad. Just a pity we didn’t tip in that direction. The major casualty of Origin, is the Broncos. They have slipped to sixth on the ladder. This is nothing new for the Brisbane club. There is no doubt they will re-group quickly, but they now need to sustain a long sprint home to stay in this race. The also-depleted Cowboys fell on Monday against Canberra, but remain in third spot. The difficulty for teams such as the Sharks, Cowboys and Broncos, is that they have used up a lot of petrol over the past month, but still face a taxing run to the line. There are six games this weekend as we finish the Origin mop-up. Good luck: Dragons v Titans (Friday, July 15, 7.50pm, UOW Jubilee Oval, Sydney): Both teams are coming off a bye and the most recent form is a woeful performance by the Dragons in Round 17 when they were lapped by the Sea Eagles. Meanwhile, in that round, the Titans put up plenty fight against the Warriors in NZ. Dragons
are 8th and Titans 9th. Dragons have the home ground, but Titans are hungrier. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Sea Eagles v Warriors (Saturday, July 16, 5.30pm, nib Stadium, Perth): Both teams are coming off a bye and a win before that. No doubt the wounded Manly supporters are getting more value from their team in recent weeks, however the same can be said for the Warriors, who are in 7th and have finally awoken from a long 2016 slumber. • Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Rabbitohs v Broncos (Saturday, July 16, 7.30pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): There will be plenty of tired Brisbane players after another long Origin campaign. However they will now have their minds set on October glory. The Rabbitohs have been very disappointing this season, but still have the cattle to hurt any opposition. The
can’t seem to win games they should, such as against an Origin-weakened Sharks last round. And the Eels, despite a mountain of bad Press, just don’t seem to be reading it. That worsened this week with another off-field scandal and also the official loss of 12 points. • Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Roosters v Sharks (Monday, July 18, 7pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Unless the injury gods struck in Origin 3, the Sharks should add another scalp on Monday night. Their only emerging danger is ego and weight of expectation. Up until now the hurdles in front have been real and there was an expectation that they would fall at any of them. Now there is a growing expectation that they will clear them all and win Cronulla’s first title. If the players start looking too far ahead they will crash. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks

Broncos will need to have a tough mind-set, but there’s nobody better than Wayne Bennett to make that happen. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Knights v Storm (Sunday, July 17, 2pm, Hunter Stadium, Newcastle): The Storm will win this and celebrate a very successful Origin campaign. They sit on 30 points and second place. Just a win behind the Sharks. Craig Bellamy continues to prove what a great coach he is, not only maintaining a winning culture, but also uncovering first grade-quality players from nowhere. Knights players will have thought this sort of season finished in the Under 10s. ‘Fraid not’. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Panthers v Eels (Sunday, July 17, 4pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): Toughest one of the round. The Panthers are working hard, but just
