Just passing by THERE is nowhere better in Australia to go whale watching than off Port Macquarie. While it is still early in the whalewatching season, Anthony Heeney from Port Jet Cruise Adventures said they had some great action already. • See Sue Paterick’s story, Page 3 Pictured: A huge humpback whale thrilling watchers with Port Jet Cruise Adventures as it breaches in the pristine waters offshore at Port Macquarie. Winter’s welcome guests Sometimes we “encounter a whale

in five minutes and sometimes we don’t even have to go across the bar

By SUE PATERICK THE chill of winter on the east coast of Australia heralds the start of whale watching season as these magnificent creatures migrate from Antarctica to feed and give birth in the warmer Pacific Ocean. And for us landlubbers there is nothing more exciting, thrilling and enthralling than to watch these gentle giants rise glistening out of the deep blue sea and dive back down again with a mighty splash. On a paddle trip at Byron Bay many years ago I was left breathless when a gigantic humpback whale swam under my canoe. This amazing mammal swam around our little group for ages and looked me directly in the eye before it waved its huge flipper goodbye and disappeared below the surface with a swish of its enormous tail. When a whale dives it leaves a ring of calm water called a whale footprint. I shared a similar experience with a group of girlfriends at Port Macquarie several years ago when a mother humpback and her very cute baby were frolicking close to shore and our boat on their return trip home to Antarctica. While it is still early in the whale-watching season, Anthony Heeney from Port Jet Cruise Adventures said they had some great action already. “There has been whales breaching and a lot of interaction with whales coming over to us to say hello and swimming under the boat,” he said. “They like to do a bit of people watching but they don’t have to pay.” Anthony said they were lucky in Port Macquarie because they didn’t have to go far out to sea to find whales. “Sometimes we encounter a whale in five minutes and sometimes we don’t even have to go across the bar because they are in the river mouth,” he said. The most renowned whale in history was a big white one known as Moby Dick. Perhaps Migaloo, the famous white whale of today, is a distant relation. According to Anthony, Port Jet Cruise Adventures were the first people to spot Migaloo last season. “He’s awesome, big - about 14 metres long - and white,” Anthony said.

Above: The whales are on their northern migration, including Migaloo, above, the famous white whale. Port Jet Cruise Adventures were the first people to spot Migaloo last season. Below: You don’t have to travel far off Port Macquarie to see whale action. (Photos courtesy Port Jet Cruise Adventures)

“He came over to have a bit of a play with us.” Years before Migaloo was named or even noticed, we were camping at our favourite beach with some friends when we spotted a baby white whale swimming in the sheltered bay with its mum. I like to think we were the first people to ever see Migaloo. Whales, dolphins and porpoises are part of the cetacean family and there are 86 species

swimming in the world’s oceans. About 46 of these species inhabit Australian waters and there are two main types of cetacean: Mysticetes (baleen whales) and Odonotocetes (toothed whales). Mysticete whales have two blowholes and baleen plates on the upper jaw, which they use to filter plankton and small fish when feeding. This group includes humpback, fin, sei, right, grey, minke, Bryde’s, bowhead and blue whales.

Blue whales are the world’s largest animal weighing up to 190 tonnes and growing to 33.6 metres long. Odontocete whales have one blowhole, teeth and use echolocation to find their prey, which is fish and squid. This group includes sperm whales, killer whales, belugas, narwhals, beaked whales, dolphins, pilot whales and porpoises. According to Southern Cross University’s Whale Research Group, most of the whales and dolphins we know today have been around for 10 million years. Humpback and southern right whales are the most common sightings along Australia’s coastline, but minke, orca, pygmy, sperm, and Bryde’s whales can be spotted too. Bottlenose and common dolphins also call our waters home. Anthony and his wife Jodi bought Port Jet Cruise Adventures three years ago when they were looking for a sea change from Tamworth. They used to holiday at South West Rocks and Port Macquarie and Anthony was actually out whale watching when the owner mentioned he was selling the business. Apart from whale watching trips, Port Jet Cruise Adventures run river cruises exploring the Hastings River and whiz past Port Macquarie’s stunning coastline in one of the fastest boats in NSW. They will soon be operating whale watching tours from a large catamaran with glass viewing windows in the floor just to make it an even more spectacular and memorable experience. They operate seven days a week depending on weather and sea conditions. Check out www.portjet.com.au for more information or phone 0419 620 765.

We’re gambling with our lives

FOR most of my life, and that is a fair few years now, I have constantly heard the brag about how Aussies are such fanatical gamblers. We would gamble on two flies on a wall. The Melbourne Cup stops the nation. We will bet on anything. Almost always our affinity to gambling is worn as a badge of honour. Something we can be so proud of. Regularly I would read, listen or watch the exploits of some of our most famous Australians – Diggers, sports stars, community leaders – and so often they would be associated with gambling. It could be a game of two-up or just a day at the races. These gambling antics always come across as fun times. Mates coming together and lots of laughs and smiles. There never seemed to be a down side. Slowly as a nation we are realising there is a massive downside. Unfortunately we have dug ourselves such a huge gambling hole, that we will struggle to get out of it. Gambling is part of our psyche. However the youngster generations who grew up being fed the gambling heroics line are in an age where gambling is as accessible as air. Just a couple of decades ago you were limited as to how, when and where you could gamble. We reached a tipping point with social issues such as drink-driving, domestic violence and

smoking. For far too long, we as a community, turned a blind eye to these issues. Despite too many people dying on our roads, too many women being bashed at home and too many deaths from smoking- related diseases, we adopted a ‘she’ll be right’ attitude. However, eventually, one by one these issues started to stink under the public spotlight and finally action was taken. How long before we take real action on gambling? Already there are people voicing concern. But those voices are being muffled by those who are reaping a massive payout from the suffering of gambling. And the gambling pain is all around us. And rooted through almost everything we do. How many sporting clubs rely on poker machines? Yet a recent statistic I read stated that $11billion dollars is lost by Aussies on the pokies each year. And who is losing that money – mostly the people who can’t afford it. How often do we see gambling advertisements during prime sporting events? And the tag line ‘Please gamble responsibly’ seems to absolve everyone of any guilt. The tipping point for gambling is coming, but just how many lives will be ruined before we as a nation stop gambling away our future. Name and address supplied

But the biggest joy was to witness the sportsmanship during and after the match. Players shaking hands and giving each other a pat on the back. I think these youngsters should be the role models for many of our senior, elite players, instead of the other way around. A lot of our so-called ‘stars’ could learn a lot from these real stars. study done to assess whether it’s viable and if so, where is the best location – and then raise the funds from there. Let’s look at this from another angle. Rather than letting six people tell the community what the priorities are, lets’ all be proactive and pull together – people power is an amazing force to be reckoned with. If you really want to see an ocean tidal pool constructed in Port Macquarie then we need to get together, adopt a ‘God helps those who help themselves’ type of attitude, support the Port Macquarie Tidal Pool Committee Inc and help start raising some funds. I’m pretty sure that if the community rallied together financially and donated a couple of dollars each to the cause it would significantly increase the chances of initial support and ongoing funding from local, state and possibly federal government in the future. So, I’m challenging all our readers, no matter who or where you are. If you’re on the MNC, in Australia, overseas or one of the 18,000+ who signed the petition in favour of an ocean tidal pool, to put your hands up if you can help, hands in your pockets if you can donate. Let’s get this show on the road and spread the word! WHAT is it about footpaths that turn people into ‘road hogs’. Surely if people are walking towards each other it is correct and sensible to imagine a line down the middle and then stay on your side. Amazed at how many people refuse to ‘give way’ and force children, pregnant women, the elderly to go off the path and often onto unstable footing. The ‘road hogs’ are mainly selfish people in their 30s and 40s. Grow up!

I WAS sent the link to a very interesting article from ABC News (Why Sydney’s unique ocean pools are the envy of other Australian cities By Sue Daniel for Curious Sydney), about the history of ocean tidal pools, specifically in Sydney and NSW. What an enlightening read – over 100 ocean tidal pools have been created over the years to serve our communities - 35 of them in Sydney alone. According to the article (http://www.abc. net.au/news/2018-06-07/sydneys-oceanpools-who-built-them/9808500) ocean tidal pools became fashionable in the late 1800s, when swimming became a competitive sport and a new wave of athletes needed a safe environment to train. We stopped building these pools in the 1960s as there was a trend towards inground pools and aquatic centres and no shortage of fresh water. Apparently swimming in chlorinated water seemed more hygienic at the time? So, building of new ocean tidal pools went by the by. The most interesting part? The local councils, community groups, private individuals and enterprise together with residents, formed organisations to construct ocean pools – for all members of the community to enjoy the benefits of ocean swimming in a safe environment. It really got me thinking about the push for an ocean tidal pool for Port Macquarie (and hopefully others on the MNC in the future) and how as a community we can pull together to make sure the 18,000+ voices who have signed the petition in favour of an ocean pool can see that come to fruition. Councillors Cusato, Dixon, Hawkins, Intemann, Levido and Turner may have decided an ocean tidal pool is not a priority for PMHC, however there are 18,000+ constituents (nearly half the voting ratepayers) saying they want to at least have a feasibility

“ A good working dog will have a natural herding instinct and is born knowing how to bring “

the cattle back to their owner. The biggest skill for the owner is to control the dog.

Why they are our best friend By SUE PATERICK TO a farmer a good working dog is as valuable as unlimited water and fertile soil. “A good working dog is worth one good man,” said Jesse O’Mullane, property manager and livestock salesman with Ray White Rural in West Kempsey. And Jesse should know because he is a station manager and contract musterer who owns 13 dogs. His business is buying and selling livestock. His furry co-workers are mainly shorthaired border collies these days because they are easier to handle and get along with than a kelpie. Although he still has a few kelpies, Jesse reckons the breed needs a lot more work and is harder to handle. In saying that his favourite dog is an old male red kelpie called Ralph. Jesse used to manage Comara Station, a massive 5567-hectare property in the Macleay Valley’s hinterland where jagged mountains ‘admire’ their reflections in the serpentine Macleay River. He still manages a large property at Lower Creek and has a small 364-hectare farm at Clybucca. Picking a good working dog is a skill and a lot of farmers look for different things.

Some farmers look for a dew claw, which is a sign of coming from older breeding stock and they think this is a good trait because more modern dogs no longer have dew claws. “I just go on look, the type of dog and the breeding,” Jesse said. “But you don’t know how good a dog will be until you work it.” A good working dog will have a natural herding instinct and is born knowing how to bring the cattle back to their owner. The biggest skill for the owner is to control the dog. According to Jesse, border collies, kelpies and coolies are lead dogs. “So they stop the cattle running and bring them back,” he said. “Whereas cattle dogs are good for dairy herds because they’re heelers so they nip the cows’ ankles to keep them moving forward.” Jesse starts training his dogs at about 14 to 15 months but will teach a dog with promise basic commands like sit, stop and stay when it is younger. If a young dog is not a stand-out in the team then Jesse can’t run too many at once, otherwise his good dogs might pick up a bad habit. There is an old saying among farmers ‘a good dog is only as good as the worst dog’. “Although a really good dog knows its job and won’t be lead astray,” Jesse said.

Tax cuts to boost business THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

MID-NORTH Coast businesses and thousands of local workers will benefit when new phases of the Coalition’s tax concession plan come into effect on July 1. Most people will, understandably, be more interested in the first of the personal tax cuts but the importance of corporate tax cuts should not be under-estimated. If we want businesses to invest and grow jobs they need incentive and encouragement just as much as individuals do. The third phase of our corporate tax reforms means that businesses with a turnover of $50 million to $100 million will get a 2.5% cut to 27.5% from July 1. Our smallest businesses have been enjoying that level of tax since 2015, and it is steadily reaching deeper into the business world. Next financial year it will be extended to companies with turnovers from $100 million to $250 million, going to $500 million the following year, and then to $1 billion. By 2025 the plan is to have all Australian businesses, regardless of size, on a rate of 27%, decreasing to 25% by 2026-27. The Coalition’s political opponents describe this as an expensive give-away to bosses and big corporates, but it’s not. It’s an investment in our future. Corporate tax rates are being slashed around the world, regularly, as countries seek to keep their businesses competitive and growing. The rate in the United States is now 21%. In the United Kingdom it is 19.5%, in Japan 23.4%, and in South Korea 22%. In Switzerland it is 8.5%. Very, very, few developed countries now have corporate tax rates as high as ours. If Australia does not reduce our top rate of 30% we will be left far behind. Investment will decline as companies look elsewhere and jobs growth will slow. In the coming weeks Parliament will vote on this plan. Businesses and workers on the MidNorth Coast, and right across the country, will benefit if it is passed, and have less to look forward to if it is not.

Port is a pilot site for solar THE largest rooftop solar panel system on a healthcare facility in Australia is currently being installed at Port Macquarie Base Hospital. Port Macquarie Base Hospital has been chosen as a pilot site for the large-scale solar project which aims to demonstrate that large-scale solar is cost effective and feasible for hospitals. It is expected that other health districts across NSW will be investigating large-scale solar as well. More than 2000 Photo Voltaic (PV) panels are being installed as part of a $900,000 project by the Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) to meet the objectives of the NSW Health Resource Efficiency Strategy and to help put downward pressure on the district’s energy bills. Solgen Energy Group was awarded the tender to install the solar system on the main hospital building and the adjacent Mid North Coast Cancer Institute. The 609 kW project will cover most available roof space at the hospital, significantly reducing the site’s dependency on the grid. This will save the hospital about $130,000 in electricity bills per year. Money saved through the life of the project will be returned to frontline health services. In addition to the solar project at Port Macquarie Base Hospital, the District is undertaking a $7 million program to implement a

range of energy conservation measures across its health facilities. The Energy Performance Contract (EPC), being undertaken by Veolia, will deliver energy, gas and water savings to improve sustainability and deliver cost savings. These measures will include the installation of LED lighting, rooftop solar panels, window tinting and rainwater harvesting. The budget to undertake these two projects has been sourced from the Crown Finance Facility, the NSW Government fund that has been specifically allocated to improving Government energy productivity. Since 2016 NSW Health has invested $26.4 million in energy conservation programs across the state’s public health network. Over the coming months significant energy conservation work will be carried out on a number of sites across the Mid North Coast Health District.

Waterways survey KEMPSEY Shire Council is asking residents to provide feedback about how they use some of our waterways and how they would like to see them looked after. Council is reviewing and updating the Estuary Coastal Zone Management Plans for the Macleay River, Killick Creek and Korogoro Creek. Coastal Management Programs will replace the existing plans and will be a guide for council to preserve and improve the habitats, recreational amenity and resilience of these estuaries into the future. Council, with financial and technical support from the Office of Environment and Heritage, has engaged Coastal Management Consultants BMT to undertake stage 1 scoping studies of these estuaries. The studies, which are currently being undertaken and should be completed by late 2018, require evaluating current management measures to consider either new or alternate measures for improvement. Council’s Senior Natural Resources Officer, Ron Kemsley, said as a component of the scoping studies, council wants the community to provide input by filling in three online surveys to help council understand the community’s needs and management priorities for these waterways. To participate in one or all three of the surveys go to council’s engagement website Your Say Macleay: https://yoursay.macleay. nsw.gov.au/

Mud is not such a dirty word THE name mud did not come from Dr Samuel Alexander Mudd. It preceded him by a number of years. Dr Samuel Mudd, 1833 to 1883, was the surgeon who treated the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth after Booth had assassinated Abraham Lincoln. I was sitting in the club, minding my own business, when I heard another person include in his comment “his name is mud, so far as I’m concerned”. Anybody mentioned in the same breath as mud is not much good. The word mud goes back to 1883 – not that far back. But mud originally meant, as it does now, wet and soft soil. It was originally spelt various ways, such as mudde, mode, moode, moude, mude, mudd and a lot of other spellings. The expression, ‘here’s mud in your eye’, could have several explanations, according to American Chrysti Smith. She said it could apply to bread added to wine (“drink it all down”) or it could apply to a horse finishing well back in the field. It began appearing in the 1920s. My big dictionary has three pages of mud. The phrase ‘as clear as mud’ comes through all of this. It also meant the walls of a cottage, or an oil and gas well or the dregs or a fool. But mud can combine with other expressions.

my

LAURIE BARBER

How about - mud in our eye, his name is mud, mud-caked, mud bar, mud hog, mud showman and about 100 or more other definitions. What about as clear as mud, mud cabin, mud grey, mud bath, mudguard, mud crab. They even made a film, called Mud. It starred Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon. The Australian National Dictionary lists mud, mud crab, mud-eye, mud fish, mud lark, mud oyster, mud fish, mud map, mud mapping, mud rain, mud tank, up to mud, mud crabbing, muddy and mud fat. It also lists Mudgee, Mudgee stone, Mudgee wattle and mudguts. The Macquarie Mud Run is an approximate 10km course around and across the Macquarie River at Dubbo. Of course, they have restaurants and bands. And don’t forget the mud things that women do to their faces to make them beautiful. It doesn’t work.

Then they have mudlark (a sort of racehorse) and muddie (mudcrab). And don’t forget mud map. I could go on. Let me tell you about Dr Samuel Alexander Mudd, although he was not Australian, or New Zealander. He was born and died in Maryland USA. His claim to fame is that he was imprisoned for conspiring with John Wilkes Booth in the assassination or US president Abraham Lincoln. He grew up on his father’s tobacco plantation and studied medicine. Some say he formed a friendship with Booth. After Booth shot Lincoln on April 14. 1865, he broke his left leg while fleeing the Ford’s Theatre. Mudd attended to his leg and arranged for a carpenter to make some crutches. I don’t know what happened to the carpenter, but Mudd was imprisoned for a while. He was pardoned by president Andred Johnson and released from prison in 1869. His conviction, to my recollection, was never overturned. But I still wonder about the fellow whose name was mud. I don’t think it was me. lauriebarber.com; lbarber.com.au.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson We truly are a connected community, and with nearly 35% of us aged over 60, it’s really important that we place a high focus on providing pathways, crossings and other pedestrian facilities that are easy to access and safe, so we can all get around with minimum fuss.

public areas and buildings across our region. They focus on developing projects that will improve physical access for people with a disability, and make sure these projects adhere to the Disability Discrimination Act. They also play an important role in helping Council prioritise projects, and help identify opportunities to get the money to pay for them.

Our towns, villages and major centres are becoming increasingly busy, requiring a continued focus on improving facilities for pedestrians and footpath users of all abilities.

Council also has a Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan which coordinates investment in safe, convenient and connected pedestrian routes, and looks at areas identified by our community as important for walkability, safety, convenience and mobility. Improvements including footpaths and pedestrian refuges have recently been completed in many of our towns and villages including Wauchope, Kendall and

You may also have heard the announcement of a new crossing that is soon to be constructed on Bold St, Laurieton which will really help improve safety on this busy road. If you have the opportunity, we’d love to hear your feedback on proposed changes for the Port Macquarie CBD, including new and improved crossing points and lowering the speed limit to 40km/h. Please let us know what you think by going to our website or popping into a Council office or library. Making it easy to get around benefits us all, and I’m really looking forward to continuing the hard work in delivering improvements for our entire community. Until next week, Peta.

A model way to raise funds THE region’s biggest collection of models will be on show at the Panthers Port Macquarie in July. The 2018 Model Expo will be run by the Port Macquarie Scale Modellers for the second time after a very successful show last year. “We hosted it last year for the first time and through the gold coin donations we brought in $2,400,” explains Allan Masters, member of the Port Macquarie Scale Modellers. “It was roughly four times more than anyone had ever raised before and the show has been going for nearly 20 years. “We gave the money to the Port Macquarie Maritime Museum which came in handy because a year ago their displays on the waterfront at the bottom of Clarence Street had termite damage and it cost them $3,000 to get repairs done, so that $2,400 came in handy. “We did something right last year, so we hope to do even better this year.” For two days, the Panthers Club auditorium will be filled with fascinating examples of scale models including radio-controlled ships, cars, aircraft, period ships, working railways and steam engines, and much more. Models have been constructed from timber, brass, fiberglass, and even paper. There will also be plastic scale models including ships, armoured fighting vehicles, aircraft, science fiction, and figures. “We hope it will be bigger and better and brighter than ever this year,” said Mr Masters.

“We have 86 tables taken so far and I’ve got two tables myself which I will display about a dozen models, including my 1.8m yacht.” People will get the opportunity to talk to members about their models and will even get to watch models being constructed. “For me, I mainly model boats and what is so interesting to me about models is the detail you can achieve when building them,” Mr Masters said. “I’ve always been fascinated by models and some of the old people, which I class myself as one, they’ve all got stories to tell. So it’s a good field day of people coming in chatting to you. For example, one bloke said to me that he had an old sailing boat that was a wreck and wanted somebody to do it up and so I fixed it up for him. “Anybody who wants to get involved can come along to our meetings.” A selection of suppliers of hobby kits, tools, and materials will be at the Model Expo which takes place on Saturday July 7 from 9am to 5pm and Sunday July 8 from 9am to 4pm at the Panthers Club, Settlement City, 1 Bay Street, Port Macquarie. Entry is by gold coin donation, with funds raised going to the Port Macquarie Maritime Museum. For anyone wanting to join the Port Macquarie Scale Modellers, meetings are held every second Tuesday of the month at the Panthers from 7pm.

Record numbers for choral concert CHOIRS from across the Mid North Coast are coming together for a spectacular performance in Port Macquarie. The Hastings Choristers are holding another ‘Choral Kaleidoscope’ concert. This time they will be joined by over 150 other choir members from around the region. “This concert features a number of choirs performing a wide repertoire to provide an afternoon of great choral music,” said Dr Colleen Smee, Vice-President/Publicity Officer of the Hastings Choristers. “Last year we had excellent feedback because it gives people an idea of the range of choirs we have in the region and the range of music they perform.” Showcasing the variety that different choirs can bring to an audience, the Hastings Choristers will be joined by Wingsong from Wingham, SoRomantic from Bellingen, Company of Voices from Forster Tuncurry, and Port Macquarie choirs Bel Canto, Cantorus and Cantabile. Colleen says that bringing together different choirs from different areas creates a truly unique concert that will have something for everyone. “Different people can belong from different kinds of choirs,” said Colleen. “I really value being in the Choristers because we perform challenging music and because I have a musical background, I love the challenge and I love reading the music. But not everybody would want that, so they might enjoy another choir.” The audience can expect light, bright, easy listening music as well as the technical brilliance of classical pieces with beautiful harmonies. The aim of the concert is to share the joy of singing and demonstrate the advantages of belonging to a choir. “Social and health benefits abound when people come together to sing their hearts out,” Colleen said. “Choirs celebrate diversity as members can be any age and from any background, the common factor being their love of singing and performing together. Quite a few of the choirs that are coming don’t usually perform in concerts so it’s quite exciting for them too to come and actually perform in a concert. “Being a part of a choir is also great for your physical body because you have to do a lot of breathing to be able to sing, and you’ve got to be able to hold it, whilst standing for periods of time.” The concert will also showcase some serious talent. “It is a real coup for our community securing The Hunter School of Performing Arts Senior Choir to perform in the Kaleidoscope concert in Port Macquarie,” explains Colleen. “The choir has a reputation for musical excellence and a wide repertoire of music styles, so it is a rare treat to be able to attend a local concert to hear this wonderful choir, as well as all the amazing mid-coast choirs.” The Kaleidoscope Concert takes place on Sunday June 24 at the Uniting Church Port Macquarie at 2pm. Tickets are Adults $20 and $10 for Under 18s, available at the Glasshouse Box Office (6581 8888) or at the door of the venue before the concert. The doors will open at 1.30pm. “There are more choirs than ever this year for our Choral Kaleidoscope concert,” said Colleen.

Your Local Offices Covering the Mid North Coast

Pictured above and below: Some of the catch from last year’s Charity Fish Auction hosted by the Lake Cathie Amateur Fishing Club

Great catch for local charities YOU won’t get a catch fresher or better value than at Sunday’s Charity Fish Auction. Fishing clubs and locals will come together again to donate their weekend catch to be auctioned at the ‘Charity Fish Auction’ run by the Lake Cathie Amateur Fishing Club. “Our club has been raising money in the form of a fish auction for over 30 years with all proceeds donated to the Lake Cathie Rural Fire Service and Laurieton Marine Rescue,” said Melissa Donchi, President of the Lake Cathie Amateur Fishing Club. “Last year we raised $10,000. “It’s a great opportunity for the public to come in and grab a bargain too. Last year the average price per kilo for fish was $8. Flathead usually sells for $42 per kilo in store, so it’s quite a reasonable price at the auction.” Fishing is open to anyone who would like to donate their catch, and entry is free for everyone. All fish must be at the weigh-in area by 11am on Sunday, where it will stay on ice until the bidding begins promptly at 1pm. “You don’t have to be registered to take part in the fishing, you just have to turn up on the day, but you do need a New South Wales fishing license,” explains Melissa. “You also have to be at the weigh-in no later than 11am on the Sunday. Most of the people who fish in the event are in fishing clubs on the Mid North Coast, but it is open to the public. They usually start fishing Friday lunch time if they can get work off, or Saturday morning.” The public can expect to see around 250 local fishermen, fisherwomen, and children donating their weekend, often with no sleep, catching many species like bream, flathead, snapper, jewfish, blackfish, whiting, tailor, leather jacket and perl perch. “The most sought after deep-sea fish is the snapper, and then estuary fish that are really

popular is the flathead and the bream,” explains Melissa. “The most expensive fish we had auctioned off last year was the mulloway jewfish and one of those alone sold for $250. “We auction individual fish and bulk lots of fish so there’s plenty of choice and bargains for everyone.” The Lake Cathie Rural Fire Service and Laurieton Marine Rescue have played a huge role in the community and local fishing clubs. “The Marine Rescue has actually rescued our members a few times out at sea and brought them back,” said Melissa. “They go out deep sea fishing quite regularly. They weren’t hurt, but were broken down. Another one of our members’ boat overturned and the Marine Rescue brought them back in. “The Rural Fire Service has a huge impact on the area and they don’t get a lot of funding. The money we donated to them last year was used to buy radios for when they are out in the bush. They use them to keep in contact with each other so that if someone’s injured or hurt than they have a direct link with each other.” Some of the prizes and raffles up for grabs on Sunday include quality donations from various local business and accommodation packages. There will also be a sausage sizzle, cupcake and coffee stalls, raffles, entertainment, and a jumping castle for the kids. Auctioneer Chris Perry will be entertaining the public with his fun and energetic auction skills. Come along and bid for a fresh feed of quality local fish at a great price this weekend on Sunday June 17 from 1pm at the Lake Cathie Bowling and Recreation Club. The weigh-in will take place at 11am and the auction will start at 1pm. Entry is free.

2018 Tax Changes for Individuals

Saving lives on Macleay roads The statistics don’t lie. Don’t die! Almost half of road trauma in NSW occurs on local roads. If you think that doesn’t affect our community – you are wrong. Between 2012 and 2016, 13 people were killed and 156 were seriously injured on the roads in the Kempsey Shire Council LGA, at an estimated cost to our community of over $138 million. Even more costly is the huge personal and emotional burden that families and individuals bear in our community as the result of road trauma. Country residents are four times more likely to die in a road crash than those who live in metropolitan areas, and the vast majority are killed on roads close to home. How often have you or someone close to you said, ‘Yeah…BUT I’m almost home’ or ‘Yeah...BUT I know these roads’? The statistics show that locals are dying on our roads. It is our mates and our family members. Kempsey Shire Council is working to remind the community and drivers about the risky choices and decisions we make every day on our local roads. Driving too fast and driving when tired are two of the biggest causes of crashes in our community with 60% of all accidents involving a single vehicle that has run off the road, failed to negotiate a bend or crashed into a stationery object. Ask your friends, your family or yourself how true this may be. Kempsey Shire Council will be conducting an Information Day at the South West Rocks Sports Oval on Saturday 23 June lining up with a huge day of local soccer and rugby league. Come out, learn more about ways you can help to reduce road trauma and have a great day at the footy supporting your local teams.

It’s nearing the end of the financial year again and as you prepare to complete your 2018 year tax return its worth considering that there have been a raft of changes affecting individuals tax returns for 2018. Here are just a few: Car claims to be closely examined by ATO. As part of a broader focus on work-related expenses, the ATO will be examining large car deductions claimed under D1 for the 2017/18 income year. They are particularly concerned with taxpayers making fraudulent claims which are reimbursed by an employer. Travel deductions for rental properties not allowed. 2017/18 is the first year in which deductions for travelling to a residential rental property will no longer be allowable for certain taxpayers. A deduction is not allowable for travelling to collect rent, maintain the property or complete an inspection, and extends to individuals, partnerships and trustees of a trust. CGT main residence denial for foreign residents still in transitional rules. Individuals who are foreign tax residents will no longer have access to the CGT main residence exemption from 9 May 2017. The exemption is removed if the owner is a foreign resident for tax purposes on the date of the event. However, grandfathering rules are still in existence up to 30 June 2019, where foreign residents who held property at the original date can still access the exemption. “Catch-up” superannuation contributions to begin next year. Individuals with a total superannuation balance of less than $500,000 will be allowed to make additional concessional contributions where they have not reached their concessional contributions cap in previous years, with effect from 1 July 2018. Unused amounts will be carried forward on a rolling basis for a period of five consecutive years from 1 July 2018. Downsizer contributions available from 1 July 2018. An individual who is aged 65 or over may make “downsizer contributions” from the proceeds of the sale of a dwelling that was the person’s main residence, applicable to the proceeds from contracts entered into on or after 1 July 2018. If you need more information or wish to discuss any of the above changes and how they affect you, please feel free to contact our office, especially in the lead up to the end of the financial year. Disclaimer The contents above is current at time of print and is intended as general news and not advice, as each taxpayers situation will vary depending on the specific circumstances relating to that taxpayer. Professional legal, Accounting & Financial advice should be sought on how these measures relate to you and your circumstances.

REGIONAL students and schools will benefit from measures announced in this year’s Budget. The Federal Coalition Government is providing $53.9 million to increase the number of regional students who are eligible for Youth Allowance by raising the parental income cut-off for the regional workforce selfsupporting independence criteria. It is estimated an extra 2,300 students from regional Australia will be eligible for Youth Allowance as a result of these changes. Our Government is working to address the challenges faced by students in regional and remote areas. The changes ensure students are well supported to travel between home and boarding school and are encouraged to finish their schooling. The Government has also accepted all 11 recommendations of the Independent Review into Regional, Rural and Remote Education to support more regional and remote students to get an education. The Coalition Government is committed to ensuring that regional and remote students have the same access to education and the same opportunities as kids who live in big cities. The cost of student accommodation was a significant issue for rural and remote families.

TAFE NSW Port Macquarie student Katelyn Dwyer has been honoured for her academic achievement and work ethic at the 2018 TAFE NSW Excellence Awards gala ceremony in Coffs Harbour recently. Ms Dwyer, who completed a Certificate IV in Business Administration at TAFE NSW Port Macquarie in 2017, was announced as the winner of the prestigious Trainee of the Year Award. “It’s been a great year for me – this year I have been nominated not only for the TAFE NSW Excellence Awards, but for the Hunter Valley Training Awards Company Excellence Awards as well,” Ms Dwyer said. “Up until now, winning the gold medal at WorldSkills for VET in Schools Business Administration in 2014 has been my greatest achievement, but winning this award takes it to the next level.” TAFE NSW Regional General Manager, Susie George, commended the winners for setting a benchmark in their chosen areas of study and helping inspire other students to follow suit. “These awards recognise our most passionate, industrious and skilful students, and the fact that TAFE NSW teachers have endorsed the student’s hard work and achievements, makes it even more special,” Ms George said. “I have no doubt these students will go on to forge highly successful careers and will be wonderful ambassadors for TAFE NSW.” Ms Dwyer finds teaching very rewarding, and with her passion for administration, she has set herself the goal of becoming a vocational teacher in the area of Business Administration Services. “My most memorable feedback from the teachers at TAFE NSW Port Macquarie was when they suggested I follow steps to becoming a teacher of business administration. I had never considered that option, and they opened my mind to a whole new possibility,” Ms Dwyer said. “Their belief in my abilities was extremely encouraging, and I am taking steps towards that career path now, by undertaking a Diploma in Business Administration as well as the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.” TAFE NSW business teacher, Karen Kennedy, praised Ms Dwyer for her dedication to her studies. “Katelyn is a very confident young lady who has the determination to succeed in all that she undertakes. During my time with her as my student she would only settle for the very best. This was evident both in her administrative skills and her personal skills.”

Elephant Trail Race receives a funds boost MEMBER for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has announced that one of the region’s latest events, the Elephant Trail Race, has secured $16,339 from the NSW Government’s 2018 Incubator Event Fund. Mrs Williams said the NSW Government Fund assists rural and regional events in their first or second year to grow attendance and boost the local visitor economy. “Whether it’s food and wine events or music and sporting festivals, events play an important role in driving additional overnight visitation to the Port Macquarie–Hastings region. “The Elephant Trail Race is a fantastic way to fuel our local economy by putting more heads on hotel beds, diners in our restaurants and shoppers in our boutiques, and

I am delighted this event will benefit from the NSW Government’s funding support,” Mrs Williams said. NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said the NSW Government is doing everything it can to supercharge regional communities, with an extra $500,000 committed to boost the Regional Flagship Events Program. “We are supporting a phenomenal 33 Incubator Events in Round Two, this is the highest number of events we have announced in a single round since the Fund opened in 2016,” Mr Marshall said. “The extra $500,000 has allowed us provide additional marketing support for rural and regional events held this year, which is a major coup for our regional tourism industry.

“We are growing the regional tourism pie across NSW, making sure everybody gets a slice. This funding boost will have a positive impact on local hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions – helping to stimulate local economies and create more jobs.” The Elephant Trail Race is one of 33 successful events in rural and regional NSW which will be held between July and December this year. The Incubator Event Fund offers oneoff grants of up to $20,000 to those staging an event for the first or second time to fund elements such as staging, venue hire, research, marketing and publicity activities. For more information on the Program, go to www.destinationnsw.com.au/rfep.

Come and pay tribute to a legend THE Slim Dusty Centre at Kempsey will host the official Slim Dusty Day celebrations on Saturday June 16, with entertainment from 10am to 2 pm. A highlight on the day will be performances by young country music artists Keely Johnson and Tyson Lucas. Both of these talented young musicians are set to have an incredible career in country music. Keely Johnson is mentored by Lee Kernaghan and has performed all across Australia. She was recently in Nashville where she was being coached by Renee Grant-Williams, who has worked with artists such as Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban. In addition to her music career, Keely has raised over $700,000 for children’s cancer charities and founded her own “The Golden Octopus Foundation”, which is raising money to allow children to be able to stay in their own home towns across Australia, instead of having to travel and stay for long periods at major hospitals in the state. She was awarded the Queensland Young Achiever Award in 2017, and has been nominated for the Young Australian of the Year. Keely is currently recording her first album. Love and respect of traditional country music sets Tyson Lucas apart from many other artists. He received his big break playing a young Troy Cassar-Daley at the Tamworth Country Music Awards and released his first EP “It’s OK to be me” at the 2018 Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Keely Johnson performs with Lee Kernaghan “I want to bring the focus back to classic country in Australia,” he said. The award winning singer/songwriter has successfully released 2 singles; one of them titled “We Just Want To Be With You” reached Number 2 on the Country iTunes Chart. Join us for a BBQ, live music, lucky door prizes and more. Slim Dusty’s wife and partner of more than 50 years, country singer/songwriter Joy McKean will also be joining in on the

the country’s most awarded stars, with a career spanning nearly seven decades. Slim was the first Australian to have a No. 1 international hit song, with a version of Gordon Parsons’ “A Pub with No Beer”. He has received an unequalled 37 Golden Guitar awards, as well as two ARIA awards and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and the Country Music Roll of Renown. The 2000 Sydney Olympics was very special for Slim. As he had sung it in a hundred country halls and as many tent shows, Slim sang Waltzing Matilda as the last song, the last goodbye to an estimated global audience of nearly 4 billion. “Just me, the world and my guitar . . . amazing,” he mused later. What is the Slim Dusty Centre? The Slim Dusty Centre is the home of the Slim Dusty Museum. In addition to paying tribute to the country music icon, it helps to tell the story of Australia and its history. The Centre also hosts a travelling exhibition gallery and a function centre. There is an onsite gift shop selling Slim Dusty merchandise, souvenirs and locally made products, and also a café. The Centre successfully opened its doors to the public on October 17, 2015 with over 200 people per day visiting the multi-purpose facility during the first weeks. footytips

Clear air for tipsters THERE is a rare glimpse of clear air for rugby league tipsters this weekend. No Origin players missing or fatigued … until game two that is. And a look at the table reminds us what a fresh-faced comp we have in 2018. Panthers on top, then the Dragons, Rabbits and Warriors. It is a season that is bringing a whole new dimension of support. Almost a turning of the page. We are also seeing a little more consistency in results, with the new breed proving that at the mid-way point they are the real deal. Let’s hope they keep it up. Time to tip some winners; Eels v Rabbitohs (Thursday, June 14, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Eels are last and the Rabbits are having a hot season. Even their win over the Cowboys last weekend won’t convince too many people to get behind Parra. The bookies have the Eels as $3.55 outsiders in the early market – and that is being generous. The Rabbitohs were far from convincing against the Titans last weekend, but they have Greg Inglis, Dane Gagai and Damien Cook coming back from Origin. Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Cowboys v Warriors (Friday, June 15, 6pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): Even having their Origin stars rested and back may not be enough to pull the Cows out of the hole they have dug themselves. They are 1-4 from their past five outings and just can’t seem to find the answer to whatever is ailing them. The Warriors meanwhile had a good win over Manly last weekend and have the added bonus of the likely

inclusion of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, back from an ankle injury. The game is in Townsville, and the Cows have the cattle, but … Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Roosters v Panthers (Friday, June 15, 7.55pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): What a cracker! Both teams in good form. Both won last weekend. Both with genuine premiership credentials. The Origin aches and pains, which resulted in both teams having narrow wins last time out, have disappeared. The battle of the halves – Cleary v Cronk – will be worth the admission alone. This should be a great indicator for the second half of the season. The bookies can’t split them, but Panthers are top of the table for a reason. Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Bulldogs v Titans (Saturday, June 16, 3pm, Belmore Sports Ground, Sydney): Two teams really struggling for respect in 2018. The Titans were solid in their 18-16 loss to the Rabbits last weekend, but must find an answer to some very worrying defensive lapses. The bookies have the Dogs as slight early favourites $1.72 to $2.15 – and they are at home. But recent form suggests you can’t back either of these teams with any confidence. Go the home advantage. Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs Dragons v Sea Eagles (Saturday, June 16, 5.30pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong): The Sea Eagles started to take flight a few weeks ago but have since been grounded with a 2-3 winloss stat from their past five games. They were given a touch-up by the

Sharon Griffiths

Warriors last weekend and no reason to think they will be any better here. The Dragons had the Monday game this week (a win over the Dogs), so there may be some late injury concerns there. There is also a suggestion coach McGregor may even rest one or two of his Origin stars. That’s confidence. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Sharks v Broncos (Saturday, June 16, 7.35pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium, Cronulla): Winning form is good form and the Sharks have won four of their last five, including a good one over the Tigers last weekend. The Broncos have not been as convincing and that’s the reason they sit outside the eight. They were also on the wrong end of a 32-16 scoreline against the Storm last weekend. Jimmy ‘The Jet’ Roberts will be back after missing that clash. The money is for the Sharks (home game) in the early market. Broncos certainly in with a strong chance, but Sharks have form and home advantage. Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Knights v Storm (Sunday, June 17, 2pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle): Similar story here. The Knights are 1-4 from recent games, but have not had a great deal of luck. Last weekend they were edged 18-16 by the Roosters. The Storm are expecting a few key players back from injury and suspension. One of those is Billy Slater, but coach Bellamy will not be in any hurry to bring his star back. No reason why the Storm machine won’t keep on doing what they do well – winning. Your Local Independent tips: Storm

Wests Tigers v Raiders (Sunday, June 17, 4.10pm, Campbelltown Stadium, Sydney): Ninth (Tigers) v tenth. This will be tight.
