A 2-for-1 psychic lifesaver By BARBARA DYER
ANN Carney was 51, and had just recovered from a heart attack, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was both spooky and fortunate that a local clairvoyant had warned Ann that there was a problem during a reading a couple of weeks earlier. “The clairvoyant was offering a two-for-one deal so I went along with a friend for a reading,” says Ann. “I was not overly impressed by the reading, but the clairvoyant said she saw ‘a dark area’ over my left breast.
“It had been a while since my last mammogram so my friend encouraged me to have one. Thank goodness. “Sure enough, there was a lump in my left breast which resulted in my needing a mastectomy.” Fourteen years later, Ann looks back and recalls that the worst part of the diagnosis was the waiting for the biopsy results and later wondering how to tell her three sons. “They were then in their late 20s but, as a mother, it was hard news to share with them,” says Ann. • Continued Page 3 • Ann’s Tassie trek, Page 3

Breast cancer fundraiser By BARBARA DYER
EVEN before her breast cancer diagnosis 14 years ago, Ann Carney was involved in fund raising for Pink Ribbon and breast cancer research. “At the time, people would ask me ‘why?’, and I would say that having cancer was not a prerequisite to helping find a cure,” she says. Ann is still finding ways to raise funds into cancer research and works closely for Breast Cancer Network Australia, which carries the familiar pink lady, blue man logo. “BCNA is doing extraordinary things to support women, men and the families undergoing the hardships associated with breast cancer treatment and the effects suffered post treatment,” says Ann.
“On Saturday, September 16, we will have a major fundraiser with a high tea planned at Abundance Cafe and Nursery. “The cost is $30 a head with profits to BCNA. “We hope for a great turn out from 2-5pm this Saturday. “There will be a fashion parade supported by Heart to Heart lingerie in Wauchope, and tickets can be bought there or by calling me on 0413992468. “After several fund raising events, lunches, raffles and second-hand book sales we have raised $1800.” Meantime, Ann is preparing to do a seven-day trek with her sister Kay along the east coast of Tasmania as part of a BCNA Inspired Adventures team.
“These walks happen all over the world – some women will do the Great Wall of China, others have done Tuscany” says Ann. “Next year women will trek the El Camino in Spain. “I chose Tassie in November as it will let me spend quality time with my sister, Kay. “We will be in a group of women from all over Australia but have to pay our own way over and we have a fundraising target of $3000 for the BCNA. “We leave for Launceston on November 25.” For those unable to make the morning tea, but who would like to donate towards Ann’s $3000 BCNA Tassie trek fundraising target, go to tassietrek.gofundraise.com.au/page/anncarney.

Positives to Music of Bach centre stage at Kendall all situations THE Kendall National Violin Competition will feature the music of J.S. Bach at its annual celebration concert this Sunday, September 17. The concert starts at 2pm at the Kendall School of Arts. Following on from the finals of the National Violin Competition, which takes place this Saturday, the celebration concert will feature the 2017 winner, an orchestral string ensemble and Sydney flautist Suzanne Sherrington. The program includes Bach’s intriguing Goldberg Variations arranged for string trio, his festive Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 and his joyful orchestral suite in b minor. Goetz Richter, Artistic Director of the Kendall National Violin Competition, will lead the performance. “This is a great way to relax some of the tension from the previous day and really celebrate with the joy and vitality of Bach’s music” he said. The final round of the Kendall National Violin Competition on Saturday features four talented violinists from around Australia in recital with pianist Jeanell Carrigan. They will play for an international group of judges from Australia, New Zealand and the US and the Kendall audience. Their performances will also include the premiere performance of ‘Paper Boats’ by young Australian composer Emma Greenhill, winner of the Kendall Competition’s ‘Watermark Composition Prize’. Following the celebration concert on Sunday, the ensemble will also present performances at three local primary schools under the direction of Mr Richter, who is an Associate Professor at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. For further information, including ticket bookings, visit www.kendallviolin.org.au or call Mavis Barnes on (02) 6559 4339. • From Page 1 The registered nurse was well aware of what lay ahead and appreciates that she did not need radiation or chemotherapy following the mastectomy. She says such a diagnosis is often harder on a younger woman or a mother of younger kids. “Often the whole fertility issue comes into question if follow-up treatment is needed,” she says. “I did not have that, but I have not forgotten the fear and the anger I felt,” she says. “I had survived a heart attack a year earlier and I was angry. “Even though it’s behind me, I think you always remain vulnerable. “But I also know there are always positives to any situation and, for me, it was meeting nice people, the strength I saw in the women who supported me, and ending up with nice small boobs following reconstruction and a breast reduction. “It might not always change the prognosis, but positives can make things a little more bearable.” Ann says although she was determined not to collapse in a heap, but did get ‘very drunk’ after hearing the diagnosis. “A month later I was talking to my son about it and he said he was expecting bad news when he saw me drinking and smoking,” Ann laughs. (Ann is a trained ‘laughter therapist’ and sees the measurable benefits of laughter in her own life and that of others.) “He said he thought I was going to tell him I was a lesbian! “He’d have preferred hearing I was a lesbian, rather than that I had cancer.” Today Ann’s life is not about her cancer story; it’s about the others she can support through fund raising and education about early detection. “I can’t say enough about early detection and breast screening,” she says. “I never felt a lump but, luckily, the screen picked up the cancer.”

Anger over septic charge
ON receiving my rate notice from Kempsey Shire Council for the 2017-18 financial period I instantly became angry over the septic charges. It is allotted to be inspected every second year, which I knew. I was charged last financial year with no inspection and I have been charged again this year - for 2016 ($140 for two tanks), and 2017 ($150 for two tanks) totalling $290. I went into the customer centre to state my displeasure about being charged one year for a service that doesn’t happen only to be told it used to be $200 but now they balance it out. I answered, “Sorry, I have lived here for 29 years and it has always been $50 since the law came in.” I want answers Kempsey Shire Council. How come you can charge for services that are not done? Inspections are every two years so therefore ratepayers should only pay every two years for the service (inspection). It is hard enough paying the rates on a pension, let alone paying for a service that you don’t supply. I also received a pamphlet with my rate notice telling me all the ‘do’s and don’ts’ of a septic tank, but yet we have an environmental system
next door where the water is pumped out on to gardens automatically and the stench would knock you out. I thought it was supposed to be like drinking water. It’s the same at your sewer works on North Street - the odour at night is disgraceful. Just driving through there is bad enough, imagine the poor residents having to eat their tea. Again, I was told the water is crystal from the works. Yeah, Yeah! Ha, Ha! When it rains it is like an island out the back, but you tell us households that there are to be no odours or leaks from our tankst but enviro tanks and sewer works are okay. Well done. To rob the householders (ratepayers) for services not received is blatantly wrong. These legislations need to be looked at and overhauled. You take our rates and do nothing in our area. Why? Because we live on the west side of town. In the 40 years I have owned my property you could count on one hand the work carried out in our estate. Hang your heads in shame and look beyond the township. V Finch Yarravel

The ‘Blokes’ Club’ is still alive and kicking LAST week I shared a bit about the rough patch I’d been through over the last year, with the vague hope that it might be relevant to someone reading it - in the lead-up to World Suicide Prevention Day. In a nutshell, I shared my story purely to let people know, it doesn’t matter who you are, what you do, where you are or how you look at it, there are times in life we struggle and we need to learn it is okay to ask for help. In fact, you need to get help to move forward. It certainly wasn’t about me having a pity party - that officially came to an end in April – or drawing attention to get accolades about how great I am for getting my life on track. If I was great I wouldn’t have let my life go off track in the first instance! About 95% of you got it and your messages of thanks, support and encouragement are awesome! Thanks also for the couple of invites to dinner. I’m flattered, but no thank you. On the other end of the scale? Every, single, time, I share a part of my story, without fail, a handful just have to take it to another extreme! To be quite clear, last week’s column was not about me ‘needing’ or ‘wanting’ a man in my life! There’s been plenty of occasions over the past 12 months where it has been suggested that ‘there are other ways I could work with someone’ among other things. One guy I was interviewing for a job, offered me money and whatever else I might require on the side, in the interview – nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

The piece de resistance was the guy who wanted me to either take over or manage his business, get him out of the pooh and hand over half my business to him as security – oh, and the occasional shag wouldn’t go astray, just to seal the deal. Bear in mind, I had not met either of these guys before the business meetings. I thought we were past that crap? Obviously not! I must be both naïve and delusional! Can you imagine if a gay guy, shaking hands at the end of a business meeting with a straight guy, casually said: “How about a shag to seal the deal?” I don’t reckon Mr Straight guy would be too happy, so why is it deemed acceptable that it is okay for him to say the same to a woman? Look! I hate generalisations, stereotypes and putting people in boxes, especially when it comes to gender, but, if the shoe fits… This behaviour is unacceptable bullshit, displayed by chauvinistic, ego-maniacs! The good old boys club mentality, alive and kicking! They are narcissistic control freaks! To be avoided at all costs! I’d just prefer if they’d all act like pigeons and flock off!
BANK Holidays. Why is this still a thing in 2017? Although a couple of institutions kept their doors open on August 7, the majority did not. This caused significant inconvenience to thousands of individuals and local businesses who were unaware of this event which no longer has any relevance and does not serve any purpose. Time to scrap it!
Thumbs Down TO people who arrive late for their appointments and
still expect to be seen or, worse still, don’t turn up at all (or ring to cancel). Your lack of consideration costs the business money, and it is not fair to the people booked after you. You are supposedly adults, be responsible for your own actions and don’t blame others.
Thumbs Up I WOULD like to thank Dan and Adrian at Port Macquarie Car Wash for supporting me when I come to wash my car as I am often unable to do it myself. A big thank you. It pays to go to the one place and I recommend going to them.

Living their sporting dream form, to go out there and be themselves in a lot of ways By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC A LOCAL program is kicking plenty of goals by ensuring everyone can live their sporting dream. The All Abilities Futsal and Basketball Program in Port Macquarie is providing worldclass training and the opportunity for people with disabilities to play futsal and basketball on a weekly basis. “We are looking for people that are a part of the disability community who want to have a chance at these sports,” said Chris Whitfield from All Abilities Futsal and Basketball. “We also have people who fall more under the mental health bracket with schizophrenia and manic bipolar disorder as well as people with down syndrome, autism, and intellectual disabilities.” The program has been going since May and has changed its sessions from Fridays to Saturdays to allow more time for people who work or receive care during the week. “I think everyone really deserves the right to have a bit of choice to get into sport and get as much out of it as what I and everyone else in the community has,” Chris said. Playing futsal and basketball gives people a chance to develop their skill set, dexterity, hand eye coordination, balance and much more. However, it’s the benefits such as personal growth that keeps people coming back each week. “Their self confidence really goes up,” Chris explained. “It gives them a chance to have their own little platform, to go out there and be themselves in a lot of ways. “For other people it helps with dexterity,

hand-eye coordination, foot-eye coordination, balance, and getting fit.” The program also looks at developing pathway programs so that players can look at getting into mainstream teams as well. “We have one guy who is already playing on my futsal team outside of this team on a Monday night,” said Chris. “I’ve been a really big sporting person my whole life so I’ve always seen the benefits in sport and how important it is for it to be available for everyone.” Chris currently works in the disability industry with Centacare and has brought on experienced sporting coaches for the program. “Clay from the Indoor Sports Stadium donated us court time and Mitch who is the NSW development manager of futsal is also a world-class coach and has been over to Spain to do coaching and now he’s coaching us,” said Chris. “From the basketball side of things Nick Bannon has been coaching with us and he is a great coach in the local area and works out of the base hospital in the mental health unit there. “We’ve got a really good team so we really want more participants and more players.” All players need to bring each week is a gold coin, shin pads for futsal, water, shoes that won’t mark the courts … and energy. For any questions or to join, contact Chris Whitfield on 0422 130 017 or via email chris.whitfield7@gmail.com The sessions take place on Saturdays from 1-2pm at the Port Macquarie Indoor Sports Stadium, corner of Hibbard Drive and Hastings River Drive. Players alternate on a weekly basis between futsal and basketball.

When I told the Council represantative at the footbridge what I had planned, they were
very suppportive and said I could take am much timber as I liked
Bridge is now the best seat on beach By SUE PATERICK WHEN a powerful East Coast low generated huge seas back in 2016 and destroyed the old footbridge at Crescent Head, locals were devastated. For many the iconic bridge not only connected the seaside village with the beach, it was part of the fabric of their lives and those of their children and grandchildren. So when Kempsey Shire Council was dismantling the broken bridge to build a new one across Killick Creek and called for anyone who wanted to take a piece of history home, locals heeded the call. Like everyone else, Alan Loveday felt a certain nostalgia for the old footbridge, but it was while driving down to the beach to collect some timber that he had an inspired idea. “I put my Lions Club of Crescent Head hat on and thought we could build some chairs for the reserve and to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International,” he said. “When I told the Council representative at the footbridge what I had planned, they were very supportive and said I could take as much timber as I liked.” Others came down that day for their piece of the bridge and wondered what Alan was up to. When he told them, it was all hands on deck to load the timber into the back of Alan’s ute. While they were loading the timber Alan had another thought. “I decided I didn’t want to take too much timber because other people might want some too,” he said. Once the timber was loaded, Alan had his third epiphany. “I just thought I’d ask the Kempsey-
President of the Lions Club of Crescent Head Peter Loveday, Secretary Jo Watts and Treasurer Alan Loveday admiring the view from one of the two new seats built from timber from the old footbridge across Killick Creek. iNSETS: One of the seats and the plaque which commemorates the fact they were built by the Lions Club with the support of the Kempsley-Macleay Men’s Shed. Macleay Men’s Shed if they would like to help us so I drove straight to South Kempsey.” “They were all for idea and offered to build the chairs.” The Men’s Shed is a self-funded, nonprofit community organisation that provides a variety of activities, including a wood-working workshop with a qualified supervisor. It also has a Ladies’ Shed. When they inspected the load of timber and decided there was enough for three chairs, Alan had another great idea. Apart from the two chairs he planned to
place in the Crescent Head Reserve near its new amenities block, he decided to approach the Crescent Head Primary School to see if they would like a chair near their flagpole. Once again, Alan’s generous idea was received with open arms. Plans are underway way to install the chair during the next school holidays. When Alan went back to the Macleay Men’s Shed a week after dropping off the timber, he was surprised to see enough for one chair was already cleaned up and plans were drawn for the design. “I reckoned the design was great so the Men’s

Shed did the manual labour and the Lions Club did the thought labour,” he said, and laughed. “Kempsey Shire Council also did the cement slabs for the chairs in the reserve.” Erected in mid-august, the dark wooden chairs seat two adults and make a perfect place to contemplate the wonderful ocean view. The Lions Club of Crescent Head is proud to raise money for its local community and support worthy charities. It holds a raffle at the Crescent Head Country Club every Friday night and the money it raises throughout the year, usually about $10,000, is donated to local schools, the surf club, community groups and charities like the Guide Dogs and cancer foundations. This month the Lions Club is taking Crescent Head’s senior citizens for lunch and a day out to Lake Cathie. They hold the annual Head to Head - a 20-kilometre race up Crescent Head’s white sand beach and back, run an annual Carols by Candlelight on Crescent Head’s golf green, provide breakfast on Australia and ANZAC days and so much more. Alan joined the Lions 19 years ago not long after he moved to Crescent Head in 1997. He said he fell in love with the area when visiting his parents-in-law, who had retired to Crescent Head. So when the opportunity to buy the local service station came along, Alan ditched his career in the Australian Army and a busy life in the city and moved his family to the seaside. He said he joined the local Lions Club because his career in the Defence Force was all about helping people. “I just wanted to keep that going and help people less fortunate than me,” he continued. His sea change prompted his parents and two brothers to move to Crescent Head as well. “I just knew I was going to live here one day,” Alan said. Turning good yarn into teddies By SUE PATERICK KEEPING old traditions alive, helping those less fortunate and a chance to have a good old yarn is what the Knit and Natter group enjoy most about getting together each month. This delightful group of Macleay Valley women meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month at Kempsey Shire Library to knit and crochet Trauma Teddies for Australian Red Cross. The click of their knitting needles is accompanied with laughter and warm conversation. The Trauma Teddies they make are given to local hospitals, evacuation centres and anywhere children are in distress. “It’s a small gesture of comfort,” said Linda Parker, Community Program Co-ordinator for the Mid North Coast Australian Red Cross. She began the Knit and Natter group in June, 2017 in response to Lismore’s devastating floods earlier in the year when the Red Cross ran out of Trauma Teddies. “I decided to start a group in Kempsey and Wauchope to help out,” Linda said. The Wauchope Knit and Natters meet on the first and third Thursday of each month at the Wauchope Library and together these two groups have knitted 60 teddies. These soft and cuddly toys were bundled together last week and sent to the newly reopened Australian Red Cross office in Lismore. A beaming Rene Wilson from the Kempsey group enjoys meeting all the beautiful ladies and having a good yarn. “I’m loving it!” she said. Fellow knitter, Karen Cooper, said it wasn’t just about occupying herself, it was about helping others less fortunate. “It’s a good way to meet like-minded people and an even better way to not dwell on your own problems and negative thoughts,” she said.
The Kempsey Knit and Natter group, Kathleen Butler, Karen Cooper, Rene` Wilson, Linda Parker, Colleen Williams, Shirley Coleman and Liz Schouten, love to get together to knit Trauma Teddies for sick or traumatised children and to have a good yarn For Liz Schouten, who suffers from chronic depression, getting out and about is good therapy. “I like meeting people, I like knitting and I’m doing something worthwhile,” she said. Shirley Coleman likes knitting anything so the Knit and Natter group is perfect for her. “I like knitting children’s clothes and I’m new to the area so this is a good way to meet people,” she said. Colleen Williams loves knitting too. “I know knitting Trauma Teddies will make a sick or traumatised child happy,” she said. “And I enjoy meeting all the like-minded ladies.”
Kathleen Butler comes each month because it is relaxing to knit with a group of women. “You get to meet lovely people and can sit and talk,” she said. According to Linda, studies have shown that if a person doesn’t have 2.5 hours of social contact a week, it is as detrimental to their health as smoking a packet of cigarettes a day. “I know how important it is to get together in a social setting,” she said. “It’s also a good way to help others and that gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling.” Trauma Teddies are either small or large and it takes about six hours to knit one from go to
whoa. Although a really good knitter could knit a small one in about four hours, beginners may take up to 15. The Knit and Natter ladies use scrap yarn. Volunteers often have their own and supplies are also donated. The Knit and Natter groups in both Kempsey and Wauchope are open to anyone whether they know how to knit or not. “We are happy to teach beginners to knit,” Linda said. From the Hunter to the Hastings, the construction, repair and upgrade of local roads will ensure they’re safer and more efficient, while the various projects will deliver a significant boost in jobs across the region. Projects headlining the latest round of the Roads to Recovery programme include: • $2.6 million – Rehabilitation and widening of existing pavement along a 2.7km stretch of Diamond Beach Road, Hallidays Point • $2.3 million – Full rehabilitation and widening of existing pavement along a 1.5km section of Harrington Road, Harrington • $2.3 million – Rehabilitation and widening of existing pavement along Ocean Drive, Kew • $1.3 million – Foamed bitumen stabilisation of existing pavement along Beechwood Road, Wauchope • $870,000 – Reconstruction of pavement and kerbs between Melbourne Street and Banks Street, East Maitland With our region having one of the highest aged demographics in Australia, it’s a priority of mine to ensure seniors can access the care they need, particularly in their twilight years. Just last week, residents at Peter Sinclair Gardens in Hawks Nest toasted the completion of a new $6m makeover of the facility. The Federal Coalition Government funded 25 new residential places, to allow the complex to now accommodate 65 beds and deliver a range of care options including additional dementia services. It further underlines our commitment to aged care following announcements earlier this year of Commonwealth support for new facilities in Taree and Gloucester. Just as the project has at Peter Sinclair Gardens, the projects will provide a significant boost to employment in the local economies with the creation of hundreds of jobs both pre and post-construction.
Have a say on assisted dying I AM encouraging people to have their say on the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2017. Later this year, a Bill about voluntary assisted dying will be debated in State Parliament. For various reasons, this is an uncomfortable, emotional and complex subject for many people and I’d like to hear your thoughts on the matter. I have met with a number of local residents on this subject so I know only too well the passion that some people have on this very sensitive topic. While I have my own personal views, I am very keen to hear from as many people as possible about their thoughts and feelings, either positive or negative. To enable more people to have their say on the Bill, I have put a survey on my webpage which I hope residents will take the time to respond. If it’s passed by Parliament, the Bill provides a legislative framework for patients with a terminal illness in NSW to request and receive help ending their lives with dignity, at a time and place of their choosing. This will give greater options to many people who have made peace, yet find themselves struck with seemingly interminable pain or discomfort. It will be tempered with criteria and protections that prevent abuse, and ensure it’s only used in the right cases.
IF I recall correctly, I have sometimes referred to myself as a hack journalist. When I was flipping through the dictionary recently, I discovered a hack in some dictionaries was a worn out horse or a prostitute. The only term that referred to me was “worn out”. At least, I can now say I am retired. The word also refers to a taxi driver. I can say, however, that I once rode in a hackney coach. I think it was a tourist attraction. In some cases it was one of those contraptions where the driver sat high up behind the passengers and the coach was pulled by a horse. Maybe it was a hansom cab, which was similar, but some of the pictures tell me it was a hackney coach. Anyway, let us return to hack. There are two hacks, with different origins, but they seemed to combine as the years wore on. Hack is a word with many meanings and it goes back to at least 1300. In its early days it had few meanings, mainly to do with horses and falconry. It came into English probably mid-1300. Gradually, some other meanings were added and by 1721 the word also represented a hackney horse, or a horse “let out for hire”. It also represented a horse for ordinary riding,

To be eligible, a patient must be over 25, live in NSW and have a condition that would prove terminal within a year. If they pass those criteria, they need to undergo a series of checks from qualified doctors, specialists and mental health professionals to check their health and understanding of the process. If they have made an informed decision, after a seven day waiting period they have help ending their life in a controlled and compassionate manner. The patient can change their mind at any stage. There are severe penalties imposed for people who may try to influence the decision of patient or medical practitioners involved. A full copy of the legislation is now available online, with options for readers to share their feedback. It can be found at www.lesliewilliams. com.au/survey The Bill is expected to go before Parliament in the Spring sitting.

EARLIER this year our region was buoyed with figures released from the International Visitor Survey which showed 330,000 international visitors had travelled to the Mid North Coast and spent $198 million in the year to March, 2017. Unprecedented numbers of international tourists are driving strong economic growth and real job creation in our region. We have a lot to be optimistic about when our tourism growth figures are over and above the national average. As we know tourism is a great source of jobs, but particularly for younger people which can prepare them well for entry into the workforce. This level of growth is on the back of the Government’s record funding spend with Tourism Australia to further increase international tourist numbers. In addition to the highest level of funding, we have been working to attract more visitors through visa reform, investment in tourism infrastructure and more aviation access. What these actions from government have led to is a record nationwide $40 billion spend from international tourists in a single year. Chinese tourists continue to have the biggest impact on the nation’s economy with 1.2 million visitors spending $9.8 billion.

as distinguished from cross-country, military or other special riding. Then my big dictionary described hack as meaning a hackney coach for hiring, a prostitute, a watch and a hack writer. So I qualify after all, but please don’t think of me as a prostitute. But I did find in a dictionary “to employ as a literary hack”. The dictionary also said commonplace, but then it said that to hack was to kick the shin of an opponent intentionally with the toe of the boot. It mentioned rugby, but it did not say that in soccer the victim has to lie down and make out he’s at death’s door, just to emphasise the severity of the contact. Then in 1704 Sir Richard Steele in Lying Lover said “we’ll take a hack”. Believe that if you wish. Surely, lovers don’t lie, do they? I found a description that said “to put to
promiscuous use”. I don’t know what that means and I would rather not speculate. But hack had many uses, such as to ply for hire, a miner’s pick, a bill for cutting wood, a wound, to embarrass, to gain unauthorised access to computer files (I had a friend called Hacker who felt obliged to change his email address), to mangle by jagged cuts, to plough the soil into small ridges. to dress stone with a hack-hammer, to stammer, to cough, to place bricks in rows, to keep young hawks, and the list goes on. It even said a hack was used to hold fodder for cattle. Hackney is a place probably a suburb, to the north of London, that had a bit of a horsey history. My Macquarie Dictionary says a hacker is a programming enthusiast who gains access to the system of a computer without permission. It says a hack is someone who does poorquality literary or other work for a living. I’m trying to think of all the places where I described myself as a hack journalist. I don’t think I can withdraw all the occasions where I was so described. You just have to make up your own mind, but be kind. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Charlotte unfolds a whole new side to paper
Thursday 14 September, 2017
Some of Charlotte Reynolds’ work that was recently exhbited at Sunset Gallery in Port Macquarie
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC CHARLOTTE Reynolds is proving there is more to art than people think. When Charlotte, from Pappinbarra (about 40kms west of Port Macquarie), wasn’t able to complete her HSC due to her illness - multisystemic infectious disease syndrome - a new passion was formed. “She had to quit school. She couldn’t drive a car anymore. Couldn’t walk upstairs anymore. Couldn’t focus in class - just nothing made sense anymore,” said Mary Reynolds, Charlotte’s mother. “It is actually a part of Lyme Disease but it is also the co-infections that go along with it. It just became worse and worse and she ended up having to sign herself out of school.” It’s been two years now since Charlotte became unwell, but her passion for art continues to grow “I can’t do much else and it basically keeps me from going mad,” explained Charlotte. “It’s the only part of my brain that still works because I can’t read or write anymore, but I can still do creative things like drawing and playing piano.” The Sunset Gallery in Port Macquarie recently exhibited Charlotte’s art ‘Paper is Alive: The untold potential of paper’. It showcased Charlotte’s paper cut-outs and her brilliant night boxes. “There’s more to paper than what you think,” said Charlotte. “Some people think you have to put paint or pencil onto the canvas to make it art, but it’s coming from the idea that paper itself can be art. “All the layers are hand cut-out with a sharp scalpel and there is wedges in between each paper. There could be anywhere between 12 to 14 layers of paper. “Then there’s the light boxes which can be used at night time because there are lights at the back part that can be turned on. So instead of having a nightstand light on in the bedroom or lounge room you turn the artwork on.” Charlotte says although art is taught in schools, many young people don’t realise the benefits. “A lot of people tend to have a stigma around art and that when you’re doing art, you’re not a smart person,” Charlotte said. “There’s the kids who are really smart or sporty and they say it’s okay you don’t have to be good at art. But when you are good at art and you’re not quite good at math or science, they tend to treat you as a lower class student. “The schools also don’t tell you what jobs it can get you. I was just pushed towards sciences and engineering, and that’s not what I wanted to do.” To view or purchase Charlotte’s art visit her Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ artysocial/ or via Charlotte’s two Instagram accounts https://www.instagram.com/arty_social/ and https://www.instagram.com/paper_minutiae/ To check out future exhibitions at the Sunset Gallery visit http://www.sunsetgallery.com.au

Timber buyers wooden miss it By BARBARA DYER IT’S still mighty nippy these young spring mornings. But a bit of a chill won’t put off the buyers and the browsers who will turn up again in droves for the Boutique Timbers annual auction out at Rollands Plains Recreation Reserve this weekend. Viewing the timbers takes place most of Saturday and from 8am Sunday, September 17, before the auctioneer takes centre stage at 10am. The buyers will be there early to look over more than 400 lots comprising a vast and unequalled selection of timber planks and giant slabs in multi colours and burls; thicknesses and lengths for use in creating anything from massive slab tabletops to simple cheese platters. An expected 100 registered bidders will arrive with the mist; most rugged up in warm jackets and Driza-Bones; caps and Akubras on heads to protect against the small possibility of rain and the smaller potential for sunshine. Within four hours, brothers Malcolm and Greg Ward from Boutique Timbers reckon 95 per cent of these beautiful timbers will be sold. Bigger lots taken away on trucks; smaller pieces in the boot of the family car. All things going as planned, that’s two lots every 90 seconds. “It’s a fast auction,” says Mal who, with his brother Greg, has been putting on the shebang for the past three years. “It’s a community event so the auctioneer volunteers his time. But we usually give him a bottle of Scotch and a thank you,” adds Greg who, at 68, reckons he’s just about ready for retirement. This is the fourth year the boys have organised the timber sale that brings buyers from as far away as Brisbane and down the south coast of NSW. The community loves it. The Rollands Plains Recreational Trust love it. It’s more than a sale. It’s a community event and a fund raiser with efforts by the Ward brothers, Kempsey Stock and Land, the Trust and plenty associated with the day combining to ensure it’s a success. “Each year we have donated $4000 from the day to the local showground and hall committee,” says Mal. “The canteen makes about $1000 and was able to spend $5000 on an upgrade of its facilities. “This year we’ve heard one of the local schools might be bringing students out for a visit. “It’s a fun day, even if you’re not here to buy.” With a good-natured laugh, Greg describes the logistics of putting on the event as a ‘nightmare’, saying he’d “rather be cutting up camphor laurel”. It’s a simple passion, but one shared by
Buyers at last year’s Boutique Timbers annual auction and the array of timber that will again go under the hammer at the 2017 sale on Sunday
many who turn up to sniff that fragrant timber, its scent perfuming the fresh air. By 10am on Sunday, when the first lots go up for bidding, that smell will combine with the aroma of coffee. But first, ‘the nightmare’. “We have to list all the timbers on our website, lay out 400-odd lots, check that they are all correctly identified and register the bidders,” says Greg. “It’s a lot of preparation. Some of the timber is ours, some is being sold for other buyers so
might have a reserve on it. “On the day, there will be a few grumbles when the bigger buyers push prices out of reach and get what they want, at any price. “That’s how an auction works though.” There is everything in every type of wood; from packs of 10 boards to beautiful big slabs; offcut packs for hobbyists and beautifully patterned pieces for woodturners to pick over. A lot of the commercial buyers are from interstate – Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Fine furniture-makers from Sydney and
Brisbane make the annual pilgrimage knowing they are going to pick up some choice timbers for a fair price. “Being in the wilderness, our overheads are low, so our prices are low,” says Mal. “I reckon our range is unique in its variety. I used to go to up to 10 wood shows a year but it was getting hard. Instead now I go to a couple and we have this auction. “We ship timber from all over – jarrah from WA, Huon pine from Tassie and Mackay cedar from north Queensland.” There is an air of excitement as buyers and browsers stand talking about the timbers; boards, burl slices, blackbutt, bluegum; crutch slabs, camphor legs, figured red cedar, natural edges, squares and turning planks. The Ward boys will share the story of ‘the one that got away’. The massive butt piece of dead red cedar that was expected to yield ten 1mx3.9m slabs but, after reaching rot through the base, resulted in five 2mx1m slabs. There are the successes too – the red cedar piece that was 4.3mx1m. It sold for $1500. That was a record for a single piece for Boutique Timbers. “But I reckon the buyer probably turned it into a table that he could have sold for $10,000 in Sydney,” says Greg. He doesn’t care. The Ward boys are not in the furniture business; their heritage is the timber business. Their ancestors worked in sawmills. “Woodworking would bore me,” says Mal. No pun intended. “I just like to cut up a tree and leave it; move on to the next job.” To get to the auctioin, turn off Pacific Highway at Telegraph Point and follow Rollands Plains Road 20km. When you smell the coffee and camphor laurel, you’ve arrived.

Family key to Slim’s festival SLIM Dusty’s legacy lives on. This year the Slim Dusty Country Music Festival will be celebrating a special 10-year anniversary with three generations of the Country King’s family. “During Slim’s life, often he would perform with his family,” said Pauline Fisher, Slim Dusty Centre spokesperson. “So this concert is that continuation of playing as a family, just as Slim did when he was with us.” Slim’s family will be celebrating the passing of a full decade since their re-opening of Slim’s beloved home studio ‘Columbia Lane’ to record the Family Reunion album, the first Family album without Slim. That album was so successful with both fans and the media that it also led to a sell-out Slim Dusty Family Reunion Concert Tour and then a platinum selling Live Concert DVD in 2008. This year’s concert will be a huge family reunion with families travelling from all over and many of the artists also playing as a family. “There are quite a few artists who are related,” said Pauline. “Of course there’s Slim’s wife Joy McKean and their daughter Anne and son David and Anne’s two children Kate Arneman and Jim Arneman and Flora Smith – the partner of Jim Arneman. “Then we’ve also got Dianne Lindsay and Sandra Lindsay who are cousins.” Australia’s leading Country Gospel artist Steve Grace will also be joining the stage during the festival week. Steve Grace went from driving trucks and singing in bars to Slim Dusty honouring Steve by recording Grace’s song ‘Port Augusta’ on his 100th album, ‘Looking Forward, Looking Back’. This year more than 1500 people will be

Property in a SMSF Superannuation in Australia is still seen as the primary and best retirement savings vehicle to save for your twilight years and within superannuation, a SMSF can be a great option for people wanting to be self-sufficient in Retirement. There has been a lot of media coverage around people using their Super to buy property within their super and the ATO recently launched “Super Smart Schemes” which goes on to warn Trustees of entering illegal schemes and arrangements which can include involving SMSF and sometimes property. Unfortunately, there are such arrangements out there. However, these schemes are not to be confused with investing as part of your retirement savings plan or investment strategy in Property within your SMSF. The fact is you can buy property in your SMSF and you can borrow within your SMSF to help purchase it. This is not a scheme or illegal activity. The essential part is that you get appropriate and qualified advice before you go down the path to ensure you get it right and if in fact this type of investment would be right for you and your SMSF. As the trustee of your SMSF it’s your responsibility to formulate an investment strategy and part of that requires you get all the information and decide on how you invest your money including how you administer the investments. It’s your retirement savings so you need to the homework and then get the right advice from a SMSF Specialist as to how it’ can be done. Everyone these days can get general information from the web easily enough and in fact ASIC Money Smart Website has a great explanation of SMSFs and property. https:// www.moneysmart.gov.au/superannuation-and-retirement/self-managed-super-fund-smsf/ smsfs-and-property However, nothing can replace the value of having a trusted adviser by your side with years of knowledge & experience in the SMSF realm and getting the advice personalised to your own circumstances. The effects of not receiving the right advice and getting it wrong can be costly to fix and may be required to unravel wiping out any benefits originally obtained through the original investment. Kerry Lewis on 188 has a two-shot lead in C grade over Graeme Sim with Lance Sykes a further shot away. In the 72 holes net event Tydd is in front at the halfway mark. He is on 141, three ahead of Hayes with Harding, Watts and Gary Fazio a further shot back. The final two rounds will be played this Saturday and Sunday with the leading players seeded for Sunday. In the club competition held in conjunction with the Northcorp event, Dave Greentree won A grade with 70 net from Nik Sandeman-Allen and Trevor Anderson, both of whom had 71 net. Hugh Gray beat Andy Davis on a countback to win B grade with 72 net and Dave Tydd was third.

B grade winners were Suzanne Gardiner 36 c/b, Margo Prowse 36 c/b, Fiona Wicks 36. C grade was won by Robyn Linn 38, Maree Clews 36 from Anthea Oates 35. Thirty-one ladies won a ball in the ball comp with NTP recipients being Margo Prowse and Rowena Meldrum on the 5th hole, Helen Smith and Linda Castle on the 16th hole with Laurie McColl on the 13th hole. Very special congratulations to Margo Prowse for her hole-in-one on the 5th. Friday (September 8) was a par round with 71 entrants. Thank you to our daily sponsors, Jo Ireland, Julie Lidgard and Lynne Shelsher. A grade winners were Sheena Gunn with a score +2, Lillian Smith +1 with Tracey Crowe 0 c/b. B grade was won by Margie Hanlan with a 0 score, Maree Clews -2 c/b from Kay Swift also with a -2 score. C grade winners were Ann Broomby with +1, Margaret Nugent 0, and Lyn Kerr -1.
Kempsey Social Golf Club
THE winner of the stroke competition on September 5 was Doug Davies with a remarkable 29 nett for 9 holes, closely followed by Sue Mackay with 30. Keeping it in the family, Jan Davies won the putting with a score of 12, no doubt helped by a chip-in on the 10th. Robin Taylor won both the ladies’ NTP and longest drive. For the men, it was Mike Fyffe with NTP and Ron Window with the longest drive.
Kempsey Ladies Golf
VISITORS from Nambucca Heads, Frederickton, Crescent Head, Gloucester, Kew, Wauchope, South West Rocks, Camden Haven and Port Macquarie joined the local girls for last Friday’s annual Kempsey Ladies Open Day, sponsored by Mavin Truck Centre. One of our own, Cassie Black, came in with a nett of 42 to take out the best score over the field. Pam Bruce, another local, was the gross winner with 25 points. Robin Taylor, also from Kempsey, was the Division 1 nett winner on a count back from Ann Couts of Port Macquarie. Nearest the pin winners, sponsored by Kempsey Signs, were Noeline Hirst (Wauchope) and Jill Stringer (Kempsey).

Season’s first double-header PORT Macquarie Sailing Club held their first double-header of the season on Sunday, with a delayed and shortened morning for race two of the Spring Series. With the last puffs of the morning westerly breeze, then a period of time drifting before a light easterly arrived, the race finished in the last of the run-in tide. After the BBQ lunch, the afternoon’s first club championship was sailed in the lightish easterly with a strengthening run-out tide. In the morning race, Frank O’Rourke on Dino and Rob Barwick on Drift were the only two catamarans to venture out in the dying breeze. After breaking the start and having to go back and re-start, Dino managed to find the puffs enough to finish ahead of Drift on yardstick by nine seconds. Terry Howard on Ratz gave a great
demonstration of light-weather sailing to take first place in the monohull division in the morning race, followed by Cameron Marshall in his first race in Lowboys 2, then Simon Gandy and Sharon Carney in Voyager. Norman Broomhall and David Cox in John Haldane pulled out when the wind died. Dino won the afternoon’s club championship race for catamarans by a long way, ahead of Tony Kuhn on Stella who recovered well after having to re-round a mark but still beating Drift on yardstick. The monohull division was won on yardstick by the lovely-looking traditional Scandinavian design John Haldane which has been fitted with a sloop rig. Then followed Ratz, Voyager (now with Jane Cooper on the helm), and Lowboys 2. Next Sunday is race three of the Spring Series starting at 1pm. Frank O’Rourke is rostered on duty.

Premier talent set to star By BARBARA DYER INFLUENTIAL Sydney eyes will be watching when the Mid North Coast Cricket Council launches the McDonald’s Premier League Cricket competition later this month. The Premier League has been a few years in conception but MNCCC promotions and sponsorship manager Harry Brady says the new format 1st Grade league is a belter of an idea and will be a springboard to greater things. He says gone will be the ‘endless cycle’ of Manning, Hastings and Macleay cricket association sides playing each other in 1st grade matches. Instead, the new McDonald’s Premier League will see 10 teams from Wingham (1), Taree (2), Wauchope (1), Port Macquarie (3), and Kempsey (2) pitted against each other. “There will no longer be 1st grade rep matches on a Sunday backing up after a Saturday match. Our 1st Grade cricketers will have oneday Saturday matches played up and down the coast,” says Brady. “This is quite a coup and will increase

WE had 22 players for our Wednesday afternoon club select triples. The winners on the day with +11 were the pairs combination (with 160 years of lived experience between them) of Dennis Simpson and Ted Scott. The runners-up were a much younger trio in Eddie Jones, Peter McLeod and Ross Laurie with +7. Friday’s beautiful spring weather attracted 10 teams for our nominated pairs. The winners with a lot were Pat Hutchby and Gordon Wagner while the runners-up with +20 were Peter McDonald and Ross Laurie. This week we have the usual Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs at 1pm (single entries will also be accepted) and Wednesday afternoon single entry club select triples also at 1pm. Visitors are always most welcome and encouraged to register for both of these events. While at the time of writing nothing is planned for next Saturday keep an eye on the notice board as it may change with a pairs event in the wind.
the players’ enjoyment. Having McDonald’s Family restaurants in Taree, Port Macquarie and Kempsey as major sponsors has everyone excited. “This will freshen up the competition and increase the desire to play and the rivalry.” Brady says the plan had come about after several years of planning, discussion and ‘a lot of meetings’ with the executive comprising himself, president Gordon Cross, vice-president Craig Lobegheier and treasurer Paul Dilley. “It was important for the executive to create a pathway for young players; to give the better players a higher level of competition,” he said. “We are doing something different; it wasn’t so much a demand as a need to look ahead and find a way to ensure we maintained a high level of competition in the region.” Brady says the NSW Country Cricket Association and NSW Cricket Association are looking at what MNCCC is doing. “It’s something different. Western Surburbs 1st Grade is also sniffing around,” he said. “The players are pumped. There is going to be some really good intertown rivalry. There will
be travel, adventure and comradeship that comes with this level of competition and which will see the new Premier League thrive.” Brady said it was exciting to see how quickly major sponsors had jumped onboard. “We approached three major sponsors including McDonald’s Family Restaurants in Taree, Port Macquarie and Kempsey,” he said. “They were on the phone to us literally within minutes to become major sponsors. “The McDonald’s sponsorship has been a lot – very generous,” was all Brady would reveal. “We’ve also attracted Kookaburra to sponsor us with equipment and Buzz Coffee will deck out the umps with new shirts.” “This middle ground will mean a little less travel and Taree can avoid the roadworks heading to Kempsey,” says Brady, who is an umpire and groundsman and been involved with cricket for more than 50 years. The McDonald’s Premier Cricket League will be launched at 3pm on September 23 at Oxley Oval in Port Macquarie. All teams will be present and the new uniforms revealed. .
The first match will see Kempsey play Taree in Port Macquarie on October 7. • NSW Premier Cricket Club Western Suburbs will travel to Port Macquarie for a pre-season trial match against the North Coast Zone open team on Saturday, September 16. The venue will be Wayne Richards Park with the match commencing at 10am. The Sydneybased club has produced more Test players than any cricket club in Australia, including legends of the game such as Alan Davidson and Bob Simpson. Former Australian captain Michael Clarke and Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc also play for the club. Clarke played a couple of matches for the club last season but is only an outside chance of making the trip to Port Macquarie. Junior cricket registrations and promotional activities such as ‘Have a Go at T20 Blast’ will be held on the adjacent synthetic pitch between 10am and midday on Saturday. There will also be a free barbeque for U16 players so junior cricketers are encouraged to attend.
Sunday is the next round in the Jackpot Triples so please confirm your teams. On behalf of the WMBC I would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to Ken Coull’s family. Anne, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very trying time.

Origin spirit is alive in finals MOST of us thought Origin finished in July. However the 2017 NRL finals have a definite Origin scent about them. Is it any surprise that the three teams with a huge Queensland Origin contingent – Storm, Broncos, Cowboys – are still in the chase? Melbourne are no surprises. They have been the dominant team all season. However injuries to key Broncos and Cowboys players, going well back into the season, should have ruled both these teams out of finals contention. Brisbane get a second chance in the finals series only after over-achieving in the latter stages of the season. Many had written them off at the start of the year saying the squad lacked ‘star quality’. However even with that ‘handicap’ and injuries to players of the calibre of Andrew McCullough Brisbane finished in the top four. They narrowly lost their first finals match to the Roosters last weekend, but in reality should never have been in the game. That ‘Origin quality’ ensured they stayed in the fight right until the last play. That same never-say-die attitude has turned

the Cowboys into the fairytale side of this finals series. Take JT and Matt Scott, plus others, out of your top and see how far you get. North Queensland just keep turning up for each other and making the impossible, possible. You would think they couldn’t go any further, but that is what we have been saying for weeks. You would think the tank would be empty by now, that even their own players would understand the task in front of them. But no, they don’t. The Cowboys are ‘the story’ that keeps fans’ faith in any sporting code. This team shows that it really is about more than money and ego. They are prepared to put everything on the line each time they run out and just give everything they have, despite the odds. Broncos v Panthers (Friday, September 15, 7.55pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): The bookies have Brisbane as heavy early favourites here ($1.40) to overcome the Panthers ($3). For the Broncos, a lot hinges on Darius Boyd’s hamstring. The Brisbane skipper is more than
123 122 121 118 115 115 114 108 108 107 106 98
a brilliant attacking player, he is the glue that keeps the Broncos’ defensive line intact. That was glaringly obvious against the Roosters last weekend when too often there were massive holes in the Brisbane line. This game is here for Penrith to take. They proved last weekend against Manly that they have the ‘right stuff’ for finals football. However the pressure increases this weekend. Brilliant ball-player Nathan Cleary is the key. This is the game when Cleary can show he is better than ‘just’ a very good player, but a genuine matchwinner – cometh the hour … • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Eels v Cowboys (Saturday, September 16, 7.40pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The chorus is reverberating across rugby league land – ‘surely they’ can’t go any further’. Of course ‘they’ are the Cowboys. Bloodied, broken, but unbowed, as stated above they now have become the favourites for the fans who no longer have a team in the finals. Paul Green’s men show just what desire can bring to a team. Common sense, and the bookies, say that they can’t go any further. But the funny thing is, their own belief not only does wonders within their own ranks, it also has a destabilising effect on the opposition. In recent weeks the 15th – 16th September 2017 Eels have grown to be the one team Friday 15th September, 7.55pm, Suncorp Stadium that street-corner experts believe can Broncos vs Panthers upset the Storm, as evidenced by last weekend’s performance. However Saturday 16th September, 7.40pm, ANZ Stadium they are a real confidence team. The Eels vs Cowboys more they look over their shoulders at what the Cowboys are doing the more the doubts can creep in. Having said that, the Eels are electric. They have real attacking brilliance and power and mongrel in the pack. If they can shrug the doubts and hit top gear this weekend, the score could get ugly. • Your Local Independent tips: Eels
