Forget the rubbish A good rule to remember is that if you wouldn’t wear it or give “ it to your mum, then please don’t give it to us
“
By SUE PATERICK LAST year the Old Rectory Anglican Op Shop in West Kempsey took 13.5 tonnes of rubbish to the tip, rubbish left at the front door or in the donation point at the front gate in Kemp Street. To put this in perspective, the forward anchor of retired ocean liner the Queen Elizabeth 2 weighed 12.5 tonnes. So imagine the amount of dirty nappies, soiled underwear, filthy rag-like clothes and other assorted rubbish volunteer staff at the Op Shop have to deal with. Not only is coping with this amount of rubbish time consuming, it is also a health hazard for the volunteers. According to Op Shop Coordinator Barbara Cheers, people have been leaving rubbish that should have been put in their own bins or taken to the tip. While she thanked all the kind people who continued to donate clean, saleable items to the Op Shop, Barbara wanted people
to assess the goods they wish to donate. “A good rule to remember is that if you wouldn’t wear it or give it to your mum, then please don’t give it to us,” she said. The fabulous Op Shop has been serving the Macleay Valley for 45 years since it opened in 1973. In 2018 it sells tagged electrical goods, clothes, toys, books, baby’s clothes, bedding, bric-a-brac and much more. It also gives to the community by helping out people in need and donating to a distribution centre at Fairfield in Sydney. From there the goods are distributed to anywhere in need throughout Australia and overseas. The Old Rectory Anglican Op Shop is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 1pm. Call in for a browse or to drop off your clean, saleable items, which can also be left in the donation point at the gate. To become a volunteer with this worthy group call in and say ‘hello’. Volunteers will need a police check and Working with Children check.

A community champion Betty prefers being busy to being in limelight By SUE PATERICK FOR Betty Green, winning Kempsey’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award was exciting, but also a little embarrassing to be at the centre of attention. While she has worked tirelessly for the community for just over 30 years, Betty has done so with little thought of self-promotion. So the honour of winning such a prestigious award was humbling. “I feel very stunned, but it’s been good,” she said. “I’ve been getting lots of congratulations on Facebook and everywhere I go people are coming up to congratulate me so they must be happy.” Given her list of achievements and the amount of charities she supports it is no wonder the community is pleased. Betty has worked as a volunteer with St Vincent de Paul for 20 years, and both The Macleay Valley Community Art Gallery and the Kempsey Neighbourhood Centre for 14 years. For several years she was the Board Chair for the Macleay Vocational College and a committee member for the Macleay Valley Education Fund Scholarship Programme. Betty is also the Chairperson of Macleay Options, a Patron of the Kempsey Singers, and a Patron of the Macleay Valley Home Hospice. Betty is particularly proud of the Hospice. “It is the only one of its kind in Australia and the envy of others,” she said. “The service is excellent and the fund raising that is accomplished on their behalf is amazing. “The Macleay Valley is a very generous community.” In 2004 Betty was elected as Councillor for Kempsey Shire Council. Through that role she became heavily involved with the community and used to Chair a lot of committees. In 2016 she decided not to stand at the next election. “Looking at the community now I can see good things are happening and dramatically improving,” Betty said. “Not just because of me, it’s all the unsung heroes out there doing great things in the community that I am most proud of.” Betty first moved to the Macleay Valley in 1987 to take up a position as Director of Nursing at Kempsey District Hospital. When that position was changed in 1994, Betty moved on to become the Executive Officer/ Director of Nursing at Wauchope District Memorial Hospital.
Kempsey’s Australia Day Awards Citizen of the Year for 2018 Betty Green, who was humbled and thrilled to receive such an honour While she may have officially retired in 2005 Betty has not been standing still. Along with her other commitments, she is National President of the Australian Foundation for Healing Touch.
Healing Touch is a worldwide health system based on energy and using a person’s energy to heal themselves. It is a complementary health treatment not an alternate cure that works with main stream health
agencies and practitioners. “Healing Touch is the missing link in holistic nursing care,” Betty said. “If a body’s energy fields are balanced, the body will heal itself. “It’s a healing process that maximised wellness not a cure of mind, body and spirit.” In order to help people Betty keeps the costs of her fabulous treatments very affordable. After having one myself, I have floated home like a bubble on a summer’s breeze. Betty devotes so much time and her endless energy to the Macleay Valley community because she loves the place and its people. She especially enjoys the region’s stunning beaches and was swimming before she could walk. “I was always close to water so I just love it here,” Betty said, smiling. Hibiscus flowers are dotted throughout her home and a bowl of frangipanis fill her lounge room with the scent of summer. “It’s semi-tropical and after living in Papua New Guinea (PNG) for 15 years it was like coming home,” she added. Betty moved to PNG in 1963 with her husband Bob who worked as an Army Engineer. In Port Moresby, the country’s capital and largest city, she was a mid-wife. Betty was also a Baby Health Nurse in Wewak on the Sepik River, where she would disappear into the jungle for hours. Later they lived on the rubber plantation her husband ran. The property had 280 degree views of the sea and jungle. “It was really isolated,” Betty said. “It was great!” As the senior health personnel in the area, Betty was called on in emergencies when the river was up and the airstrip was closed. She recalled on incident when she had to administer snake anti-venom by lamplight at 3am. “It was hard trying to find a vein,” Betty said. It was also in PNG that she really learnt to stand up for herself and support others who could not speak out. At the time non-Indigenous women weren’t allowed to give birth in PNG so Betty had her son, Warren, in Cairns in 1966. Several years later in 1971 when her daughter was about to enter the world, Betty steadfastly refused to go back to mainland Australia and Deliah was born in Port Moresby. “All the skills I learnt along the way help me now,” Betty said.

LETTER WEEK OF THE
All letters sent in must include your address and phone number and be under 350 words.
Seeing the whole issue YOUR ‘From the Heart’ piece in a recent issue of Your Local Independent regarding sexual harassment has prompted me to try to help you understand why some might find your reasoning flawed. No, I’m not offended you adamantly offered your opinion. I just feel that it is misinformed. While you astutely observed that sexual harassment happens (Well done! Acknowledging a problem is the first step to solving it) the tone of your write-up highlights one facet of the whole #MeToo campaign. The purpose of this movement is to bring awareness to the routine nature of sexual harassment in all workplaces by highlighting the experiences of women who are familiar to us all. In the same way they inspire us to pursue our dreams, they inspire us to stand up for ourselves and each other in the face of unwelcome advances. It’s not about denigrating those who speak out against powerful men for the clothes they choose to wear or the manner in which they conduct themselves. (I, for one, thought society had moved past the ‘But maybe you were asking for it dressed like that?’ argument.) It’s not about discrediting the women who use all available resources to share their stories for the world to hear. It’s about women risking their careers and
relationships to share their horrific experiences with others in the hope that one day this type of behaviour will no longer be standard or expected. Unfortunately, most women don’t get to choose whether they want to be sexually harassed or not. Drawing a line in the sand is all well and good, but when your livelihood is in jeopardy, the same livelihood that your family depends on to survive, do you reject the uncomfortable touches and comments and risk your job or do you grin and bear it? Some women might not be able to make that choice as resolutely as others. Some women might blame themselves for the unwelcome harassment. This behaviour has become so commonplace, an ‘open secret’ in some professions, that society has shifted the blame from the perpetrators to the victims. (How dare they upset the status quo?! It’s always been this way, just deal with it!) What is really disappointing is the lack of empathy towards the women who have subjected themselves to ridicule, online abuse, and defamation in order to help those who are struggling to find justice and peace with themselves. Sad reality of reality TV I REMEMBER studying about Stalin’s Big Brother in my last year of primary school, circa 1975, in NZ. Living a care-free life in the ‘70s, I was both fascinated and appalled to wrap my head around the concept - that ‘big brother is watching you!’ Fast forward to 2018 and I’m once again, both fascinated and appalled – because the reality is, BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU! Here we are living in the land of milk and honey, where endless opportunities abound, should we choose to take them. If we can just get our eyes off our screens for more than five minutes at a time. I never thought the invasiveness of ‘big brother’ could become a reality in my life time – but I’ve changed my mind. It’s done and dusted! The first reality show I remember gracing our TVs in Australia, was ironically ‘Big Brother’ in 2001. I remember it well, as I’m sure most of you will. We now have reality TV coming out our ears. We are surrounded by it! The Bachelor/ Bachelorette, First Dates, I’m a Celebrity, Get Me out of Here, MKR, The Block, House Rules, Survivor, The Great Race and Married at First Sight(MAFS) – just off the top of my head. And I’d be confident in saying over half the population of the country is hooked by one or more of said reality shows, Just try and have a conversation with someone between 7.30pm and 9pm on a Monday – Thursday and I bet you have to wait until after 9pm for the response. If you’re not hooked on reality TV shows,
MANY thanks to the kind person who found my wallet recently and handed it to Flynns Beach Post Office and thanks also to the staff there who took care of it.

From the Heart... Sandy Mackenzie chances are you’re fully engaged on Facebook, twitter, Instagram, Tinder, Plenty of Fish, Candy Crush, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty - guaranteed you have a go to a place that is on digital/social media. What gets me about all this ‘reality TV’? It seemed like a bit of harmless fun, but I’m over seeing how ‘the greatest social experiment’ pans out. I caught some of MAFS this week and I’ve got to say, I just don’t get it. The expectations of a perfect wedding and happily ever after, from first sight, between two complete strangers, is, well, sorry to state the obvious, UNREALISTIC! What’s worse? That over the last 20ish years, we have come to accept the unrealistic crap that is ‘reality TV shows” as the norm. We have embraced Big Brother with open arms! If we can’t watch it on TV, we can’t help ourselves, we catch up on our phone, it becomes part of our everyday conversations. We follow and comment on social media and suddenly every other distracting piece of rubbish is filling up your newsfeeds, inboxes and message services. Because now we’re hooked, we’re fully engaged with no turning back. Hell, if you want to you can watch other people watching TV on TV? That’s a sad reality!

Calls for ocean pool at Shelly Beach because ...
Lagoon already a natural By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
“
I feel Shelly Beach lagoon, in my view, is the perfect location for an ocean pool because it is so environmentally natural. God has carved out this pool naturally already.
“
WHAT do the locals want? An ocean pool! Where do they want it? At Shelly Beach lagoon! Well at least that seems to be the chant echoing around sections of the Mid-North Coast. When local man Yanni MacRitis was swimming at Shelly Beach lagoon, he noticed that the natural foundations and infrastructure for a much-wanted tidal pool were already in place. “I feel Shelly Beach lagoon in my view is the perfect location for an ocean pool because it is so environmentally natural. God has carved out this pool naturally already,” said Mr MacRitis. “It’s got the infrastructure and environment there, the natural waves coming in at night and keeping it nice and clean. It’s got the rocks there where it’s a lagoon now, so it’s a perfect place - a phenomena with history of Port Macquarie with locals and tourists alike who love the tranquil view.” Calls for an ocean pool at Port Macquarie have been heard for many years and a local petition has attracted 15,000 signatures. Local Mayor Peta Pinson has indicated council interest in the proposal. Mr MacRitis said there were numerous good reasons why an ocean pool would be extremely popular at Shelly Beach. “We have tourists and locals here who are looking around to swim at night but most people don’t want to go into chlorine,” he said. “We have to gain the interest of as many people as possible before it can go any further. I’ve spoken to many locals myself who all say
Many locals believe Shelly Beach at Port Macquarie is naturally perfect for an ocean pool they are in favour of the pool at Shelly Beach lagoon. Some locals are even saying that a chain at the back of the pool and more concreting is all that’s needed. I think some lighting would also be great so that it’s fit for night swimming.” There are natural ocean pools in Coogee,
Collaroy, Bilgola, Bronte, Cronulla, and now Mr MacRitis says it’s time for Port to follow. “It may cost less than a million dollars pending engineering reports and costing,” said he said. “The pool would also boost tourism in the
area. It’s situated just 100m from local eateries. I speak to a lot of the tourists, a lot of French and Germans, and they all love the beach and they say ‘wow, this is such natural beauty’. “It would be the perfect pool for families who want to take their kids swimming in a safe spot.”

We are trying to capture any seniors who might be out there … to share some of “ their memories with us and then I will show them how to develop those memories and

anecdotes into a short story that other people might enjoy to read
Time to let your life be a positive lesson By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC OLDER residents of the Mid North Coast are being urged to start chronicling the upside to ageing. Local writing group, the Fellowship of Australian Writer’s NSW (FAW), Port Macquarie Branch, is calling on all seniors for an upcoming workshop focusing on ‘Positive Ageing’. The workshop is taking place on February 19 to prepare for the Seniors Card Short Story Competition (NSW). “We are trying to capture any seniors who might be out there … to share some of their memories with us and then I will show them how to develop those memories and anecdotes into a short story that other people might enjoy to read,” said Colleen Parker, President of FAW’s Port Macquarie Branch. “Writing memories and writing about yourself is a healthy thing to do, but by telling other people what you do and how you are enjoying this last third of your life, people read that and go ‘oh well gee I’ve always wanted to go up in a balloon or take up a new hobby’. So it stimulates others to think about how to start enjoying this last third of their life.” Colleen has been involved with the Fellowship of Australian Writers for 11 years and even had her own publishing business in Sydney before retiring and moving to Port Macquarie. The 1,000-word short story competition is
Some members of the Port Macquarie Branch of the Fellowship of Australian Writer’s NSW, standing from left, Fay Dooley, Beth Anderson, Paul Horvath, Thom Klein, Walter Van Hoorn, Colleen Parker, Cate Dunn, Joie Black and Emma Gaulton. Sitting, from left, Gwen Rees-Hopton and Connie Jones a part of the NSW Department of Family and Community Services. The Top 100 stories will be published in the NSW Government anthology, Seniors Stories Vol. 4 and launched in October, 2018, at the Parliament House, Sydney. “It’s always been directly run by the (State) government before, the first three issues,” said Colleen. “They had over 600 entries each year, and to cull that down to the top 100 to publish was quite a large job. So they found my writing organisation, the Fellowship, and contacted me and asked if we were interested in speaking to them about running the competition this year.” Entries will be taken until midnight on June 1, 2018. Colleen has a special selection of judges who will help cull down the raw entries before she makes the final vote. From there the 100 chosen short stories will be taken to print. Colleen says that although the trials and
tribulations of people’s lives are important to share, she really wants to see how people are celebrating ageing and living a new lease on life. “It’s about reading the hard parts of someone’s life, but then having a positive outlook or new lease on life in the end,” Colleen explained. “It doesn’t matter how they go about it, we just want to hear it.” Colleen says the writing group can provide a much-needed activity and social outlet for especially older people. “I have seen that within our group, people who live on their own - family are all interstate - and they don’t want to be a nuisance to their family, and they don’t accept many invitations. But they are suffering inside. Stepping out and joining a writing group does wonders for them and these are the kinds of groups or activities any senior can be apart of.” To prepare writers for the competition,
five workshops will be held throughout NSW. Seniors across the Mid North Coast are invited to the workshop running on Monday, February 19, at the Port City Bowling Club from 10.30am – 12.30pm. To book your spot in the workshop contact Colleen Parker on 6583 3997 or email parkerpattinson2@bigpond.com The final workshop will be held in the New South Wales Library in Macquarie Street, Sydney, during Seniors Week in April. For a free entry form to enter the Short Story Competition visit www.fawnsw.org.au and follow the directions. Check the Terms and Conditions Page for entry requirements. This competition is for all NSW Seniors Card holders and NSW Writers 60-plus. If you are not already a member, join for free ate: www. seniorscard.nsw.gov.au
FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson Last Thursday I had the privilege of attending the funeral of a very special community member, Daphne Johnson. I say privilege because a funeral is such an intimate moment for any family, and to attend the last goodbye of such an inspiring woman was very memorable for me. Daphne Johnson was a wife and mother first, however she will be remembered as a tireless crusader for all things important to the community. Daphne was one of our region’s
longest serving Councillors and had a local government career which lasted 25 years. The community of the Port MacquarieHastings came together in St Peter The Fisherman Church in Laurieton last Thursday to demonstrate their love and affection for Daphne, and the stories of an inspirational woman will not be forgotten by me. Present to pay their respects along with family and friends were past Mayors and former Councillors of Council who served with Daphne, local police, community groups who Daphne volunteered with, Rotarians of which Daphne was a long
pmhc.nsw.gov.au standing member, and our local State Member Leslie Williams. I attended with General Manager, Craig SwiftMcNair and he shared stories of Daphne with me from his time working alongside her at Council. The take away message for me was that even though I did not work with Daphne Johnson, nor know her personally, without knowing it she has had a lasting effect on me for her commitment to making a difference in our lives. Vale Daphne Johnson – rest in peace. Until next week, Peta.

Young cowboy is riding high By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC YOUNG Levi Ward is closer to his dream of becoming an internationally renown, champion cowboy. Nine-year-old Levi, from Kundabung, just south of Kempsey, finished 2017 as All Round Junior Champion Cowboy at the Ironman 4X4 Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association National Finals Junior Rodeo in Tamworth. “Levi had a great year in 2017,” said Dean Ward, Levi’s father. “He was named All Round Junior Champion, 8-11 year old Steer Riding Champion, and runner-up in the Barrel Race.” Throughout 2017 Levi’s points from each competition he entered were added up resulting in 300 points in the all round category, 240 steer riding points, and 160 barrel racing points, which led him to victory. “The steer riding only came down to a few points at the finals,” said Mr Ward. “This year he’s already leading in points for the steer riding which is great because Levi really wants to focus on just that in 2018.” Mr Ward says the family will be travelling every weekend to rodeos to support Levi and make his dream as a professional steer rider a reality. “Levi is very talented, but he also puts in the work,” Mr Ward explained. “He’s out there everyday riding horses bare back to improve his balance.” The gene pool in the Ward family is one of a kind with both of Levi’s sisters also performing well at rodeos across NSW. “Bobbi is only 12 years old and is leading the under 14s for barrel racing,” said Mr Ward. “Unfortunately the sport is so expensive, and each weekend costs us thousands of dollars. It’s a shame because she’s going to miss out
Left and above: Champion young local cowboy Levi Ward in action and with some of the spoils of success
because of our budget. “Franki is our baby and is just 8 years old. She’d be the fastest 8-year-old in Australia I reckon. There are barrel-racing clubs around Australia and last year Franki won fourth division in the adult’s competition and then she won Rookie Of the Year. All our kids are pretty damn good and I’m very proud of them.”
Training everyday can be a lot for a young boy, but Mr Ward says Levi does it happily while still remaining a good student at school. “Levi and his school teacher are best mates,” Mr Ward said. “They are both sports mad and they probably spend more time talking about football and cricket than they should, but it keeps Levi happy and enjoying school.
“He’s had the same teacher for three years and Levi couldn’t be happier. Levi is very much supported by his schoolteachers and his community with his riding.” Levi has recently had the support of his latest sponsor, Fishers Asphalt in South Kempsey. Plan to reduce road heartache MAKING Local Roads Safer: Last week the NSW Government’s Road Safety Plan was released. The plan includes a range of measures aimed at reducing the road toll after 392 people lost their lives on NSW roads in 2017. The comprehensive package addresses speeding, drink driving, drug driving, driver distraction, driver fatigue, truck safety and funding to improve safety on country roads. The Road Safety Plan is a concerted effort to save lives by making sure roads and vehicles are as safe as possible. Every 41 minutes in NSW someone is either killed or seriously injured on our roads, leaving families and friends with the heartache. As a Government we know we can do more and that is why this plan makes it clear if you break the law you will be caught. We also want to ensure that our public education campaigns are targeted in the right way. The measures announced include: • Expanding the mandatory alcohol interlock program to include all mid-range drink driving offenders. An interlock is a breath testing device fitted to a car’s ignition system. The driver must provide a negative sample for the vehicle to start; • Police will be given the power to issue on-the-spot fines and licence suspensions for low range drink driving. This ensures swift and

certain penalties; • Amending legislation to allow camera technology to be used to enforce mobile phone offences; • 11 additional heavy vehicle average speed camera locations, including in metropolitan Sydney, to address risks associated with greater truck movements; • An initial $125 million for a new Saving Lives on Country Roads program including safety barriers, tactile line markings, wide centre line, safety upgrades of high risk curves and $11 million for pedestrian and cyclist safety improvements including traffic calming measures, pedestrian refuges and crossings to keep cyclists and walkers safe. These measures are in addition to last month’s crack-down on drug drivers, which saw cocaine added to the list of drugs subject to roadside testing.

THROUGH the week I announced the Federal Coalition Government’s North Coast Jobs and Investment package would provide a significant boost to the Manning and Hastings Valley economies with the announcement that six local projects will be supported creating 226 local jobs. The successful projects under the first round of the Coalition’s regional-specific job creation initiative, will allow nearly $7.5-million in new projects would now proceed throughout the region. This is fantastic news for our local area. Industry and manufacturing have been an important part of the region’s economy in decades gone by, but now a new wave of industry development is on the way. We have already been investing in a number of key initiatives designed to generate more jobs in the region and this is another important layer in this process. Our record investment in aged care locally, the expansion of funding into infrastructure, roads and bridge projects and the tax cuts and employment assistance measures for small businesses are all important to the work we are doing at the Federal level to get our region’s economy moving.
Tracing the origins of ‘bogan’ SOME people, especially in the far west of New South Wales, don‘t like the word bogan. They think it belittles them, despite it being the name of a river and other places in western New South Wales. Some of them think of B Cownam writing in Legolingo in 1987 “bogans are not popular and tend to inhabit Queanbeyan”. I don’t know who B Cownam is. He was mentioned in the Australian National Dictionary, now two volumes replacing the one-volume book that I gained many years ago from Oxford. I gained it for Christmas, but I wondered what he had against Queanbeyan. Bogan, according to the same dictionary, is “a boorish and uncouth person”. It has only a brief career in this sense. The earliest I could find was in 1985. In September of that year Tracks said: “So what if I have a mohawk and wear Dr Martens boots for all you uninformed bogans”. Tracks was a surfing magazine. Teenagers used it to mean someone who was a bit of a dag, or a hooligan. My big dictionary says “occasionally synonymous with dag”. Bruce Moore, writing in What’s Their Story, was one of many who saw a connection with Kylie Mole from The Comedy Company. Kylie defined a bogan as ‘a person you just don’t bother
my
LAURIE BARBER
with; someone who wears their socks the wrong way or has the same number of holes in their stockings; a complete loser’. A similar item was contained in Dolly magazine in October 1988. Bogan is usually male, although bogan chick is a female bogan, not that I have ever heard a female referred to as a bogan chick. Susan Butler, writing in The Dinkum Dictionary, says the widespread use of bogan became popular after Kylie Mole began using it. She says it is a homegrown word. GA Wilkes says it refers to anyone who can be described as “a square”. My big dictionary tried to describe bevans and bogans, by quoting the Brisbane Courier Mail of July 6, 1988 as saying “this group is characterised by their common dress – tight T-shirts with a logo relating to the brand of car they drive or detest, old blue jeans, Ugg boots (replaced by thongs in
summer and the obligatory packet of cigarettes shoved up one’s T-shirt sleeve”. It went on to quote the Courier Mail as saying female bogans wore tight jeans, high-heeled shoes and skimpy camisole tops. It then went on to say bevans and bogans ate at McDonald’s, Hungry Jacks, the Taco Den or Kentucky Fried Chicken. That description fits me and most of my friends. I throw out all my old jeans, but shops are selling them for a high price. I think I’m missing out on something there. Bogan has some interesting expressions. For instance, there is the bogan flea (which is a plant), the bogan gate, which is a makeshift gate, bogan shower (a dust storm), bogan chick (a female bogan mentioned earlier). Then there is boganhood, the quality of being a bogan. Not everybody can be a bogan. What about bogaism or boganic. How about boganic or boganland, or boganness? But I come back to bogan, an uncultured or unsophisticated person, occasionally synonymous with dag. My dictionary says it is of unknown origin. But I can visualise a person in Sydney trying to think of name for a person from out west. “Let’s call him a bogan and he’ll think it’s a compliment.” lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au.

An un4gettable experience opening the store several years “agoSince un4gettable4evermore has gained an increasing following due to its everchanging style and affordability

OOZING colonial charm and the pace of bygone days, Gladstone has been transformed over the centuries from a busy port to a funky historic village. Discover its colonial heritage on a stroll past 19 beautifully-preserved buildings, now housing an art gallery, specialty shops, cafés, a hotel/ restaurant, and private homes. One of its most impressive buildings is the National Heritage-listed Old Court House – where the trial scene in the movie of Thomas Keneally’s classic novel The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith was filmed. Established in the 1860s on a tight bend of the Macleay River, Gladstone (formerly-known as Darkwater) soon became one of the valley’s main wharfs and a thriving community. Nowadays, Gladstone is a peaceful riverside village with a great market held on the third Sunday of every month. Its quiet wide streets make parking easy and time can be lost wandering its various charms.
Fitting right into this old-worldly charm is family-business un4gettable4evermore selling an eclectic blend of fashion, leather bags, retro toys, soft furnishings and a large selection Australianmade Tilley soaps. Since opening the store several years ago un4gettable has gained an increasing following due to its ever-changing style and affordability. In December last year un4gettable4evermore decided to expand and opened a second store in the wonderfully-restored former Barsby’s building. This new store brings something a little different to Kempsey. un4gettable4evermore is open in Gladstone from Wednesday to Sunday from 10am onwards, while its Kempsey store is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and on Saturday morning from 9am to 1pm. Fluoride debate Macleay focus By SUE PATERICK LOCAL resident, Lindy Denmeade, is organising several presentations throughout the Macleay Valley to help inform the public of what she sees as the associated health risks of adding fluoride to our drinking water. Michael Lusk, an Australian Lawyer with a Bachelor Degree in Science, will be a guest speaker at the first presentation tonight, Thursday, February 15, at the Frederickton Community Hall from 6.30 pm. Other presentations will be held at the Crescent Head Community Hall on Tuesday, February 20, from 6.30pm, and at The Bank Conference Centre in Belgrave Street, next to Lou’s Café, on Wednesday, February 28, from 6.30pm, with the bar opening at 6pm. Lindy firmly believes that the community has a right to know what is in their drinking water and what will be added to it. “After all we are paying for our water to be provided to us,” she said. “It is also of great importance to the organic industry Food Hub we are currently trying to support in our area because the introduction of fluoride could end up in our water ways and in farmers’ fields and paddocks.” Kempsey Shire Council commenced fluoridation of the drinking water at South West Rocks, Arakoon and New Entrance on Monday, November 14, 2011.
On its Facebook page Council states that fluoridation of drinking water is required to comply with a directive from the NSW Department of Health that was made in accordance with the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies Act 1957. According to the NSW Health, water fluoridation is used to prevent dental decay and is a safe, effective way of providing benefit to individuals of all ages in the community. “Extensive research supports water fluoridation as an effective measure in preventing and reducing tooth decay,” NSW Health says. Yet, the World Health Organisation says ingestion of excess fluoride, most commonly in drinking water, can cause fluorosis and that affects the teeth and bones. Moderate amounts can lead to dental problems, but long-term ingestion of large amounts can lead to potentially severe skeletal problems. Currently, there is no fluoride added to the drinking water supplies for Kempsey, Crescent Head, Hat Head, Stuarts Point, Bellbrook, Willawarrin, Smithtown, Jerseyville, Gladstone, Kinchela and Frederickton. According to Council, fluoride is scheduled to be added to Kempsey and the Lower Macleay in April, 2019, and Crescent Head in November 2019. To find out more about the fluoridation of our water supplies attend one of the presentations.

Switch off for five hours By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
Every year MoodOff “hosts a ‘Breakfast before Browsing’ campaign where we encourage people to have a morning five hours - without their phones and be completely present in their life
“
WHAT’S the relationship like between you and your phone? People on the Mid North Coast are urged to put down the phone for five hours on February 25 for MoodOff Day. Not only is phone use causing road fatalities, but there’s also a big concern, and research shows, that we are far too dependent and reliant on our mobile phones. Statistics now show that 35% of people check their phone within just five minutes of waking up, and a further 70% use their phone during mealtimes. “Being ‘present’ is such a foreign concept to many people now and it’s affecting our youth,” said Tapas Senepati, MoodOff founder and spokesperson. “We are teaching our kids that technology is more important than so many other things – like quality family-time, education, conversation and even basic things like spending time outside in nature in the sun.” While texting and using a mobile phone device has become an issue raised over recent years with authorities cracking down on this, Mr Senepati believes phone addiction should also be treated with the same level of seriousness as it is affecting sleep patterns, decreasing our ability to be ‘present’ in social settings, hindering our social skills and enabling social media ‘trollers’ to use their online presence to abuse and bully. Another concern MoodOff, a harm prevention organisation, is passionate about is cyber bullying. The recent headlines of Dolly Everett, the young girl in Northern Territory who committed suicide recently due to online bullying, is sadly just one of a growing number of cases of young people falling victim to cyber bullying.
These incidents raise the question: “Is technology hurting our society, more than helping it?’ “Another issue is, that we are also giving our children free rein to uncensored and unmonitored
platforms where they are being exposed to potentially damaging and negatively influencing content and bullying,” explained Mr Senepati. “Every year MoodOff hosts a ‘Breakfast before Browsing’ campaign where we encourage
people to have a morning - five hours - without their phones and be completely present in their life. Whether that be having coffee with a friend, breakfast with the family or just going out and engaging with the world around them in real-time not virtually – it’s really up to the individual.” MoodOff Day is certainly not about going back in time and ditching technology, it’s about realising just how reliant our society is on our mobile phones and devices. Just five hours for one day could be the start to a healthy and happier you. Join people around the world for MoodOff Day on Sunday, February 25. Port tears at Dan’s heart By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
Port Macquarie has left a lasting impression with Johnny Cash tribute performer Daniel Thompson
DANIEL Thompson is back with a new tour and a new pair of pants. The award winning Australian country singer is bringing his tour ‘Johnny Cash The Concert – Revisits Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison’ to the Glasshouse. “I’ve been up to Port for holidays over the last six months, I love it up there, and I think people will probably remember the last time we performed there because I split my pants on stage,” Thompson laughed. “It wasn’t just a little tear either, it was the whole inner seam of the pants, the whole leg, and there wasn’t any hiding it. I thought to myself ‘how did that even happen?’ “I didn’t have any spare pants either, so we just taped them up. It was quite embarrassing, but it’s all part of the show. So I think people will probably remember that performance. I certainly won’t forget it.” Thompson will be joined on stage by Golden Guitar winning and Australian country music legend Stuie French, along with their powerhouse-backing band, The Tennessee Express. In 1968, singing superstar Johnny Cash walked on to stage at Folsom State Prison, California, and for the first time ever uttered his immortal words ‘Hello, I’m Johnny Cash’. That iconic phrase and the 45-minute live album that followed, cemented Cash as a legend of popular culture. ‘At Folsom Prison’ sold over
3 million copies in the US alone and is widely regarded as one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. “We just started the tour with a couple of shows in Sydney to get back into gear after our tour last year and people loved this show,” Mr Thompson said. “This year is the 50th anniversary of the Folsom Prison album and so we are playing that. Of course we will be playing the hits that people want to hear and we love as well like ‘I Walk the Line’ and ‘Ring of Fire’. “But it’s great because with this show the audience also gets some different stuff and they really appreciate that as well. I get some great feedback about the songs we choose and the way we do them.” The Man In Black is not an easy act to follow, but Thompson has already won over more than 50 thousand ecstatic Johnny Cash fans Australia-wide through his concerts. Keep an eye out for Daniel Thompson’s album coming out at the end of the year. “I’ll continue to do Johnny Cash concerts for as long as people want to hear it but I’m also working on an album of original material as well which I will hopefully have out later in the year,” he said. “It’s nice to work on my own music as well as portray one of the greatest musicians of all time.” Don’t miss the ‘Johnny Cash The Concert Revisits Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison’ on Friday February 23 at the Glasshouse Port Macquarie. Grab your tickets at www. glasshouse.org.au or call 6581 8888.

Touch Cup again a record carnival THE adage from the movie ‘Field of Dreams’ seems sure to ring true with the running of the 2018 Junior State Cup. The last in its current format before splitting into a North and South Conference will be the largest on record with 359 teams and an estimated 19,000 people in attendance in the three-day showcase of the state’s very best junior Touch Footballing action. Together with Port MacquarieHastings Council, the NSWTA has built it, and they have come, in droves making it the largest Junior representative Touch Footballing event in the world Each year the success of the previous is bettered and 2018 is no different. Some 6500 players referees and officials will descend on the playing precinct of the Regional Stadium, Tuffins Lane and West Tuffins Lane from Friday, February 16 to Sunday, February 18. It is expected another 13,000 people - families, friends and spectators - will join them in watching the 1312 games to be played. Once again making it the most significant representative touch football event in the world of not just Touch Football but junior sport overall.
“It is a massive undertaking, more than any other year to prepare and run the event successfully. It is important to make this one great being the last in the combined format,” said NSWTA General Manager Dean Russell. “It is a challenge, and while the future is exciting for the growth of the sport, we love this current event.” He also made special mention of the partnerships that have made this event work. “The undertaking is huge from staff. We know it would not be possible without the support of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, St Agnes Parish, the local Touch Footballing community and the wider network of affiliate volunteers who coordinate all these participants and parents to attend each year”. Port Macquarie-Hastings Deputy Mayor Lisa Intemann said that once again the community looked forward to hosting thousands of talented youngsters, their families and support staff. “We continue to be amazed at the skills of the young players and look forward to a weekend of spirited competition … and lots of fun,” she said. “Our local teams will be right
amongst the action in vying for glory come Sunday afternoon, and we wish all teams the best of luck.” The 2018 version of the Junior State Cup will see an increase of 19 teams from 2017 representing 51 affiliates across the state compete for the title and prestige to become State Champions in 10 divisions. It will require 450 referees to officiate all the games over the three days. Manly Warringah Touch Association will be looking to win an unprecedented 8th consecutive Club Championship. While combatants from as far South as Wagga, Murwillumbah in the north and Parkes in West will all descend on the region in the hope of taking home one or more of the titles on offer. Teams from Sydney and the Hunter region will also be sending strong outfits north in search of glory and local Port Macquarie teams, playing on their home turf, are sure to want to give the finals a shake. Games commence at 8am Friday morning and progress through to the finals on Sunday which will begin from 1.15pm. The prestigious Girls 18s and Boys 18s will be played at 2.45pm and 3.15pm respectively.

Free music will be live and local in Macleay
A SERIES of free live music events will be held in South West Rocks in March as part of a new initiative by Kempsey Shire Council. Live and Local Macleay will bring local musicians to selected venues in the Kempsey Shire with the aim of creating a ‘music trail’ to encourage audiences to move from venue to venue. Council received funding from the Live Music Office as part of a strategic Initiative by Create NSW to increase opportunities for live music in Regional NSW. South West Rocks will be the first to host the Live and Local Macleay, which will run between March 9-11. Hosting venues include the Seabreeze Beach Hotel, Heritage Cafe, Sixty Degrees Café and the Horseshoe Bay
Kiosk and markets. “Live and Local is a way to promote the musical talent we have in our region, as well as an opportunity to showcase local businesses,” Council’s General Manager, Craig Milburn, said. “There’s been some research done by the Live Music Office around both the social and economic benefits live music brings, which shows that for every dollar spent on live music there is a three dollar return to the community.” Live and Local Macleay is supported by the South West Rocks Chamber of Commerce, the South West Rocks Arts Council and local businesses. President of the South West Rocks
Chamber of Commerce and General Manager of the Seabreeze Beach Hotel, Troy De Luca, said he is pleased to support the initiative. “I like the idea of live music through the town for the day and into the evening and the concept of driving visitors to town in the shoulder of the holiday period,” he said. “The Seabreeze Beach Hotel has live music every Sunday and we find it’s when locals and visitors can unwind and have a catchup. To have more of that happening in South West Rocks is fantastic for locals and visitors.” Live and Local is being organised by Council in partnership with Macleay Entertainment and the Macleay Valley Arts Council.

Port success in Booti Booti Cup PORT Macquarie Sailing Club successfully defended the inter-club Challenge at the weekends’ Booti Booti cup on Wallis Lake at Forster. Queens Lake Sailing Club came in second. The first 2 races on Saturday were held under beautiful sunny skies with a lovely, easy northeast breeze. It was so good, a 3rd race was run straight after the 2nd race, but the breeze eased right off during this 3rd race, dragging it out so much that the last finishers didn’t get back across the lake to the clubhouse until nearly 7pm. Sunday’s first race was held in a difficult, light, shifty westerly. By the time this race was completed, a

THIS year’s club championships kicked off last Saturday with the fours team of Craig Shaw, Adam Hackney, Ian Hackney and Sonny Hackney, (22 shots), accounting for Rex Shrubb, Alex Hamilton, Mal Agnew and Peter McDonald, (12 shots). The selectors were in fine form on Wednesday afternoon with Len Noel, Brien Clarke and Adolf Giacovani winning the day’s club select triples by a paltry 5 shots followed closely by the runners up, Scott Mackenzie, Tony Gates and Alan Edwards on 4 shots. Winners of Wednesday’s twilights triples were Anthony Magnoli, Paul Johnson and Tuck marchment while the runners up were a pairs combination of Lyn Reid and Adrian Samuelson. Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs was won by Peter Varley and Brian Kirkwood with the best margin of 21 shots. Runners up were John Wells and Ken Ansley with +20. strong wind warning forced further racing to be abandoned. It was just in time, as many of the boats had capsized on the way back across the lake to the clubhouse as the westerly started to squall in. In the catamaran division Port Macquarie’s Frank O’Rourke on Dino was really on song to win every race, and so the division point score. The Arrow cats did well against a mixed fleet of mainly bigger cats, to take out the first 5 places. 2nd was Tony Rose from Clarence River Sailing Club, and Gary Powell on Angry Ant from Speers Point was 3rd. The other Port Macquarie cats were Tony Kuhn on Stella who was 4th, and Kelly Miller on Hummer who was 16th out of the 20 boats
after sailing only the first 2 races. In the monohull fleet, Port Macquarie’s Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in their Tasar Slam Dunc took the division win with a 2nd and first places, although Kelly Miller filled in for Warren on the Sunday after he suffered back problems. Second was Rory Murtagh and Pheoby Cous from Taree Aquatic club in their NS14, and 3rd was Scott Farley from Great Lakes Sailing Club in his Laser. The other Port Macquarie monohulls were 5th place Geoff Williams in his Laser Ocean Dreaming, and Simon and Elsa Gandy with Caitlyn Hicks in their Tasar Voyager who were 7th in the 12 boat fleet. The MG14 NSW State titles were held
concurrently with the Booti Booti cup, and the new teaming of Steve Bohlsen and Scott Witchard in Splash Dance had their first attempt at sailing in a big MG14 fleet. Disappointingly, they broke the rudder again (the 3rd time in as many months) half way through the first race, forcing them to retire from this race and miss the next 2 races. They had it welded overnight and managed to get a 23rd out of 30 boats in Sunday’s race. The MG14 series was won by Phoenix ahead of Jet Stream, both from St George Sailing Club, with Nth Degree from Gosford 3rd. Next weekend is a double header, with race 5 of the summer series at 11am, a BBQ lunch, and the 5th Club Championship at 2pm.
