Race for sport $$ By CHRISTINA PARKIN
THE inaugural ‘Beach to Brother’ event is set to grow into a premier sporting tourism drawcard for the Hastings. Spokesperson for the North Coast Destination Network, Ms Belinda Novicke, says that sporting events are favoured by local councils for the economic flow-on that that is received. “For every $1 spent by the visitors, an additional $2.50 benefit is received by the local economy in terms of accommodation, meals and activities for the supporters and families brought along,” says Ms Novicke. “A new event has to start somewhere, and often in a niche such as running enthusiasts, it may take up to five years to get established, building up related social events and engagement with local community groups who assist with the running of the event.” As the first community event Mike Maher has organised, it is hoped the ‘Beach to Brother’ is the beginning of a 10-year plan for other boutique running events, such as a Bago ultra marathon. With nearly 300 competitors registered already for the ‘Beach to Brother’, the target of 250 has been surpassed. The event aims to satisfy a range of runners in their desire to overcome their next level of challenge. “In the late ‘80s, it was a half marathon that had to be conquered, then the marathon, then half and full ironman events became THE next running challenge,” explains Mr Maher, event organiser and experienced marathon runner. ∙ Continued Page 3

New race to bring in vital sports tourism dollars
The passion for supporting young Australian violinists in the Kendall National Violin Competition is shared by Goetz Richter and Jeanell Carrigan
Music to our ears By CHRISTINA PARKIN FROM an initial recital in 1990 given by Associate Professor Goetz Richter (violin) and his wife, Dr Jeanell Carrigan on piano, a musical phenomenon has grown Australiawide. “The Camden Haven Arts Council had just procured a new piano and our recital was part of a very demanding program delivered at the Kendall School of Arts Hall,” explained Mr Richter. Finding a very responsive audience and lovers of fine classical music, Goetz and Jeanell fell in love with the Camden Haven and Hastings region. Deciding to have a music festival with other invited musicians was then the start of the Camden Haven Music Festival in 1996. With the move of a violin maker to the area, Grant Caldersmith, the idea of a violin competition for young people developed in 1999 when Grant volunteered one of his violins made from Australian timbers as a prize. Goetz undertook the role of Artistic Director and the first Kendall National Violin Competition (KNVC) was held. The semi-final round took place at the Sydney Conservatorium and the final round was held at the Kendall School of Arts with Jeanell as the official KNVC accompanist. Now in its 18th year, Goetz maintains that
both the music festival and the violin competition evolved from year to year as new ideas were put forward. He also acknowledges the importance of having had the generosity of the NSW Forestry Corporation as a sponsor. “We didn’t have any expectations about how long we would continue the competition but it’s still going,” says Mr Richter. “The idea was always to encourage young musicians by bringing them on tour to a regional area. “For me, the most incredible part of this experience is to work with the local people - they are so good with what they do, so generous and it’s so amazing how this community carries this voluntary commitment.” Goetz also made a point that being a musician can be quite lonely as you have to practise by yourself, so it is important for musicians that they don’t get carried away in the technicality of their music and forget who the playing is for. “The really amazing part of the competition is when we perform concerts for the children attending Kendall Pre-school, Kendall and Heron’s Creek Public Schools,” explains Goetz. KNVC is now established as the main violin event for young students and it gets a lot of support from teachers all around Australia. Goetz also acknowledged the essential role of his wife, Jeanell Carrigan, as the accompanist for the competitors with having to play a difficult repertoire all day so it gives their performance
another level of artistry. However, Goetz also feels competitions can be dangerous for musicians if there becomes too much preoccupation with spectacular success, because they then become disillusioned if they don’t win and feel that they mustn’t be very good. “The assessment can be very subjective so we need to be mindful that everyone wins just through the experience and by removing too much emphasis on the ‘win’. “Just the act of recording is a big learning experience, then being selected for the semifinals in Sydney at the Conservatorium is another fantastic opportunity. “So getting to the final at Kendall is amazing as you get to play for an amazing warm and kind-hearted audience which gives the violinist an incredible sense of connectivity with them.” The four finalists for 2016 are Zoe Freisberg, Kyla Matsuura-Miller and Yebin Yoo from the Australian National Academy of Music, Melbourne, and Gemma Lee from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Held at the Kendall School of Arts, the competition final tickets (half day $15 and full day $25; students $5 and $10) for Saturday, September 17 competition at 10 am and 2 pm can be ordered from Mavis Barnes on 6559 4339. Tickets for the Sunday celebratory concert at 2pm are $30 and $15 for students, also from Mavis Barnes or at the door.
• From Page 1 “I realised how few people take advantage of the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk or the Laurieton Track up to North Brother, so thought how good it would be to stage a running event to take in some great scenery. “Runners will be experiencing dirt paths, concrete, sand and bush trails, hills and slippery surfaces, not to mention the climb up the mountain – all of which will require constant concentration. “The achievement of reaching the top of North Brother is the goal for these events – to literally finish on a high!” Distances on offer for Sunday September 25 are the Marathon, Team Relay Marathon, HalfMarathon, and a 10 kilometre Dash for either runners or walkers. Starting in various locations along the marathon route, all finish atop North Brother mountain – one of the most scenic lookouts on the north coast, located in Dooragan National Park, Laurieton. Both the individual and team marathon events start at Town Beach, Port Macquarie; the half-marathon starts at Lake Cathie Beach; and the 10 kilometre event starts at North Haven Beach. The courses have been designed to provide a similar challenge to races such as the Six-Foot Track Marathon, the Coastal Classic, and the UTA (Ultra Trail Australia) 50k. For Mike, a British ex-military, the addiction for running began in the training camps of the British Army. “I learned to love running and even now, when I’m not feeling right, my wife suggests I go for a run to get back in tune,” explains Mr Maher. “I’ve run the course 13 times now in approximately 3 hours 52 minutes but competitors will have a maximum of 7 hours to complete the distance, 4 hours for the half marathon and 3 hours for the 10km dash.” A gym owner in the past, Mike Maher is now a professional triathlon coach, a director on the North Coast Academy of Sport and the head coach for the Junior Triathlon program offered by the NCAS. Each finisher will receive a unique medal and event t-shirts will be available at cost for registrants to purchase. Registrations will be accepted up until September 24 upstairs at Town Green Inn from 2-6pm or through the website at www. beachtobrother.com.au More course marshalls are being sought so a day out on the scenic route can be obtained by emailing admin@beachtobrother.com.au

Time to re-start ‘state’ conversation NEXT year in 2017 will be the 50th anniversary of the 1967 selfgovernment referendum for the New England. It was narrowly defeated when the Askin government included the populous industrial city of Newcastle at the last moment to defeat the referendum. Excluding the Hunter Valley, there was a ‘Yes’ vote of 64% in favour of a new state. The ‘Yes’ vote locally in that referendum was Lismore 72%, Byron 67%, Grafton 66%, Coffs Harbour 73% Tenterfield 71%, Tamworth 58%, Armidale 61%, Coonabarabran 53%, Gunnedah 65%,
Where’s the service RECENTLY I learned that BUPA has closed its booth a Port Central. Upon enquiring via a 1800 telephone number, I was advised that an audit had shown not enough people accessed the booth in order for it to remain viable. I was told customers only dropped in claims and changed their level of cover occasionally. Surely this is what the service was about?
Moree 67%, Taree/Forster 28%, Port Macquarie 44%. In 1953, 21 Local Government areas voted on the ‘New State’ issue producing a 76.9% ‘Yes’ vote. Under the Local Government Act 1993 - Section 14, Council Polls, “ A council may take a poll of electors for its information and guidance on any matter. Division 2 Constitutional referendums.” If you can think ‘outside of the square’, you will realise that with a new state, residents will make their own decisions for their state/ region, not relying on a far distant government/bureaucracy who have
historically looked after their capital city constituency first. With economic rationalism, the Return on Investment (ROI) always favours the capital city in terms of economic development thus leaving smaller and smaller amounts of money for investment in rural Australia. For many regional people, NSW stands for Newcastle-SydneyWollongong. Taxation data for the northern NSW regions exceeds the taxation base of Tasmania and the Territories as well as population projections indicates it has the viability for future self-government.
Now is the time to start the conversation with Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs, the Regional Organisation of Councils, community radio, Letters to the Editor and Friday nights at the pub about revisiting self-government for the region. With the council elections, ratepayers may want to influence candidates who have a greater vision for the future of northern NSW than just the traditional ‘rates, roads and rubbish’. Stephen Welstead Bangalow
Apparently people were notified of this change, however as a long standing member of BUPA/HCF I did not receive written notification. The consultant said this was because I hadn’t accessed the service for over 12 months. I now have to wait for an email from BUPA with a claim form attached. When I complete the form I have to copy the Tax Invoice and accompanying health providers’ letter and either post it to BUPA or scan the
documents and email the claim back. What a system! I imagine people will start exploring other options for their health care cover following this short sighted decision. Don’t they realise the demographic they are dealing with in Port Macquarie? Just another example of businesses cutting back on staffing and services … and don’t get me started on the banks! THANKFULLY the council elections are over and we will know who will be representing the Hastings and Macleay communities very soon. Congrats to the winners! All in all, I have to say KSC candidates played fairly for the most part and I believe that the result is a true gauge of the community focus for progress and growth in the Macleay. Good on you all; the campaign showed integrity and a common desire to move forward in the interests of the whole community. PMHC candidates … What can I say? There were some outstanding candidates; working on great platforms, sadly, it’s not looking like many will make it through to sit on council. On the other hand; there was some downright dirty behaviour throughout the campaign period and we will just have to wait and see what comes out in the wash! Personally, I’ve started a list and I urge all of you to do the same. You heard the commentary leading up to the vote; exercise your rights to keep the new council accountable to the promises they made. That includes: no rate rise, transparency, community consultation, increased delivery on roads and infrastructure and last but not least, proof there is no bullying culture in council. Councillors, all you have to do is roll your sleeves up and deliver on your promises. Shouldn’t be too hard, should it?

Historic sport proves a real hit By SUE PATERICK ON a V-shaped bend of the dark and reflective Macleay River, members of the Smithtown Croquet Club gather twice a week to play a game with origins that date back to the 14th century. Each Friday and Sunday the greens of the Smithtown RSL Memorial Bowling Club ring with the thwack of mallets on balls, sounding just as it would have under the reign of England’s King Charles II in the mid 1600s. According to Croquet NSW, croquet came to England either from France or Ireland. In France they played a game called Paille Maille (Pall Mall) using mallets, balls and an arch of iron. In Ireland they played a similar game called ‘crookey’, which could have still originated in France. Some say Pall Mall morphed into golf in France, but became croquet in Ireland. In the famous novel Alice in Wonderland, author Lewis Carroll, an avid croquet player, wrote a scene in the book where Alice played croquet using live flamingos as mallets and hedgehogs as balls. Croquet’s popularity grew in the 1860s, especially among women, because it was the first game they could play outdoors and with their menfolk because brute strength wasn’t required. Garden parties were soon called croquet parties. For the 20 members of the Smithtown Croquet Club, each game still has that time-honoured feeling. The club first started playing in May and became affiliated with Croquet NSW and incorporated in July. Despite an image as relaxing as a Monet painting, secretary of the club, Lyn Gleeson, thinks croquet is a challenging game. “It is more strategic than physical,” she said.
Members of the Smithtown Croquet Club, Marg Corse, Edna Richards, Kerrie Linden and Lyn Gleeson, trying to out-manoeuvre each other in a strategic game of croquet “I’ve heard it described as a cross between chess and snooker that is played on grass.” Croquet is also open to any age group and can be played as either singles or doubles. To celebrate its inception, the Smithtown Croquet Club is holding a Gala Launch Day on Sunday, September 25 and has invited clubs from Port Macquarie, South West Rocks, Woolgoolga, Sawtell and Urunga. The event will begin at 9am at the Smithtown
RSL Memorial Bowling Club, and morning tea and lunch will be available. The croquet club also has plans for the future and is hoping to start a twilight game when daylight saving resumes. Lyn can’t wait to play croquet as the sun sets in the west, painting the river with swirls of pink, purple, blue and orange. The club’s members range from experienced to beginners and it is always looking for more
players. Games start 10.30am and end about 4pm. “If anyone wants to come along and try croquet, the club has practice mallets they can use for a few weeks to see if it’s their thing,” Lyn said. For more information on the gala day or becoming a member, contact Lyn on 6562 6707 or email smithtowncroquetclub@gmail.com

Police boost STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
Brad and Jessica Hodge from Finnians Tavern have supported If We All Had Wings with a $2000 donation from their weekly fundraising raffles
‘Wings’ bring real magic By LIZZIE McLEOD TICKETS are selling fast for the October ‘Magical Mystery Tour’, which is a fundraiser for the unique local ‘If We All Had Wings’ charity. The first ever ‘If We All Had Wings’ event, in July this year, has already grabbed the attention of many locals and their tour is predicted to be a sellout. Founder Skye Petho, along with friends Necia Waghorn and Sue Jogever started ‘If We All Had Wings’ to help patients and families going through cancer treatment. Skye knew from her own experience - breast cancer treatment in January this year - that financial hardship is a major issue for patients who should just be focusing on getting better. “When someone we know is touched by cancer and undergoing treatment, the physical impact is visible – hair loss, weight loss, looking tired,” said Ms Petho. “But it’s the financial stresses we can’t see that really take their toll.” Cancer survivor Donna Clarke knows all about the obstacles and struggles that come along with being treated.
“When I was diagnosed with cancer the financial side of it was the first thing that came to my mind,” Donna said. “I had two young children, and I was separated from my partner so it was just me and the kids and that definitely was a concern - how I was going to put food on the table and pay all the bills.” Donna also had to take time off work. She believes that ‘If We All Had Wings’ could be a part of the solution for many families going through cancer treatment. “The way I survived was that I had friends and family who would help out with everything,” said Donna. “Whether it was - money, or giving me food, or helping with the children, whatever I needed. However, I felt guilty about taking it off friends and family. But ‘If We All Had Wings’ were giving out vouchers and such, I think it would be a lot easier to take it and accept that sort of assistance instead of continually having to ask your family and friends to help you.” Many people also don’t realise the struggle that people go through post- treatment. “It was a nine-month period where you are undergoing treatment and surgery, but it takes you about 18 months before you actually get
back on your feet again,” Donna explains. “You don’t just stop treatment and then you’re fine again. Your body has to recover. You also have to build your confidence back up to the amount that you were at before.” The Wings Mystery Lunch will take place on October 9 and is set to be a truly luxurious and relaxing day for the guests. Guests will be picked up by event sponsor Busways at 11am and will be driven down country lanes leading to luxurious lunches and will be returned full and happy by 4.30pm. There are limited tickets – 110 to be exact, and it is expected they will sell fast due to the popularity of the last event. Tickets for the October 9 ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ event are $100 and include a drink on arrival, lunch, entertainment and transport. Tickets can be purchased from www. ifweallhadwings.org.au There are also currently beautiful large timber wings on sale for $50 each, as well as smaller wings available from Arthouse Industries, Elements of Design, Casualties, Drury Lane, and the Camden Haven Medical Centre Don’t forget to follow #ifweallhadwings on Facebook and Instagram.
MOBILE devices rolled out for regional cops: Mobile tablet devices for frontline officers are being rolled out which will simplify the process of issuing infringements and allowing officers mobile access to police systems. Already 900 devices from the Mobile Policing Program have been delivered to Local Area Commands across NSW as part of the NSW Government’s ‘Policing for Tomorrow’ fund and now another 1300 will be rolled out statewide. In 2016-17, $36 million was allocated towards programs like this one as part of a $100 million commitment over four years. Local Area Commands in metropolitan Sydney will receive 500 devices, while 800 tablets will be delivered to regional areas across NSW. This will make a huge difference for regional policing. These devices simplify the process of issuing infringements so officers don’t have to return to the station meaning they spend more time out on the beat. It will be of particular benefit to officers in country areas who travel long distances to return to their station to complete administrative tasks. The rollout of these devices will mean increased flexibility and less paperwork for frontline police. Officers will be able to issue infringements electronically via email or mobile text message rather than having to return to their station. In addition the NSW Police database is being overhauled with funding allocated to modernise the computerised operational policing system (COPS). The new mobile devices being rolled out will be able to access webCOPS which will allow for more efficiency and synchronicity. The devices will be implemented over the next few months. Grants Available for Local Emergency Relief Projects: Local organisations and councils are encouraged to apply for up to $300,000 to help them deliver important emergency relief infrastructure projects for their communities. These grants are being made available under the NSW Government’s 2016/17 ClubGRANTS program for projects that help protect local communities during emergencies such as bushfires, storms and floods. I encourage all eligible groups to consider submitting an application for a project that will make a real difference to our community. An applicant information pack is now available on the Liquor & Gaming NSW website www.liquorandgaming.justice.nsw.gov.au with applications closing on Friday October 7, 2016.

By SUE PATERICK SHARING the love of a good story or a perfect metaphor keeps the South West Rocks (SWR) Writers’ Group inspired and connected. This informal and intimate group formed 11 years ago and in the past eight years have published 10 books between them. There are currently 12 to 15 members, some of whom are published and some not. A body was found in a ravine was the line a teacher once gave the group that motivated Desley Polmear to write a trilogy, three of the five books she has had published. Desley has been a member of the writing group for eight years and enjoys going because it keeps her enthused. “I wouldn’t have written a book without attending and being inspired by the writers’ group,” she said. Desley self-publishes her work through XLibris - a publishing company that sells books on the Internet. “They do everything for you and are so helpful,” she said. “I also do my own marketing, hold massive book launches and give talks at libraries and local groups and organisations. “You can’t just sit at home and wait for people to knock on your door.” Diane Jenson joined the group at its inception but had some time away, re-joining about a year ago. Like most writers, she has always enjoyed writing and excelled at composition at school. Letters home about her travels earned her praise from friends and family. “ ‘You should make them into a book’ people kept telling me,” Diane said. “Unfortunately, I just can’t find the time.” New member, Nola Turnbull, loves attending the writing group’s meetings. “I go home just bubbling with joy and
Members of the South West Rocks Writers’ Group, Nola Turnbull, Desley Polmear and Diane Jensen, share a love of writing and get inspiration from each other energy,” she said. Nola hopes to write a non-fiction story of the Fredo Pie Shop and then a fiction book she has in mind. The South West Rocks Writers’ Group meets twice a month. One of its members leads the group on a roster system using their own lesson plan. Guest speakers are also invited on a regular basis to share their love of writing or tips on how they write. “It’s essential to be in a writers’ group if you’re a writer,” Desley said. “Because you learn all the time.” There is no age limit or criteria to join the group.
You don’t even need to live at South West Rocks or even be a writer. “The whole idea is to keep everyone connected who loves to write,” Desley said. “It also keeps you focused,” added Nola. THE CBDs of Kempsey, South West Rocks and Crescent Head will get CCTV following a NSW Government grant of more than $208,000. The funds have been granted through the NSW Community Safety Fund and the CCTVs will be delivered by the Macleay Valley Business Chamber. Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, said the grant will help manage crime and anti-social behaviour. “This investment will be welcomed by the community and I congratulate both the Business Chamber and Kempsey Shire Council for securing the grant,” Mrs Pavey said. On behalf of the Macleay Valley Business Chamber, President Gary Scott, welcomes the installation of the cameras. “Our community already works well with each other and local law enforcement agencies to promote a safer community, and the CCTV cameras will help us further drive down the incidents of anti-social behaviour.” Deputy Premier and Minister for Justice and Police Troy Grant said the NSW Government’s Community Safety Fund will deliver $10 million in grants over four years. “The NSW Government is investing in evidence-based projects to promote safety and steer at-risk people away from a path of crime,” Mr Grant said. “Crime has a significant cost to our communities, so supporting projects that reduce anti-social behaviour and offending is a good investment.”

Dementia Day a time for discussion THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
WORLD Dementia Day on September 21 is a time for everyone in the community to take stock and talk about the impacts of dementia on our loved ones and how to make them as comfortable and happy as they can be while they have the condition. The mid north coast has some of the highest rates of dementia in NSW and the impacts on the community are only going to increase as Port Macquarie’s population swells. Across Australia, there are more than 353,800 people with dementia and an estimated 1.2 million people who are involved in caring for someone with dementia. For those who have been exposed to dementia, either as a partner, family member, friend or carer, it can be an extremely difficult and often lonely time. Research released to coincide with Dementia Awareness Month, shows people with dementia and their carers are almost twice as likely to have high rates of loneliness compared to the general public. This sort of research makes us all think about the need for greater awareness and understanding of dementia, so that people living with the condition feel less isolated. Often people don’t know how to interact with someone with dementia and it can be distressing for people living with dementia and their families and carers. Organisations such as Hastings District Respite Centre (HDRC) in Port Macquarie employ innovative strategies in respite services, particularly for dementia, which can open up social opportunities for people with dementia or a disability. Their services include support for those with younger onset dementia, which is a growing aggregate of dementia suffers. World Dementia Day and Dementia Awareness Month, which is supported by the Federal Government, are about highlighting the issues related to dementia. People impacted by dementia are encouraged to reach out to others for support, either by calling Alzheimer’s Australia on the National Dementia Helpline on 1800 100 500 or going to the website fightdementia.org.au. For tips in how to stay connected to a person living with dementia, head to: https:// www.fightdementia.org.au/about-dementia/ resources/family-and-friends-matter
Action to protect local patch
Landcare a true Aussie success AUSTRALIANS around the country are celebrating a true grassroots success story as National Landcare Week ramps up. For over 25 years Landcare has shown vision and commitment becoming one of our most enduring and successful environmental movements. Today Landcare continues to support local communities helping our farmers to keep their land healthy and productive and taking practical action to look after and restore their local environment. The strong partnership between Landcare and the Australian Government was cemented three years ago with the introduction of the National Landcare Programme. The Coalition’s National Landcare Programme is based on the principles of simple, local and long-term and supports communities like ours to take practical action to protect our local patch. Over half a million volunteers have participated in National Landcare projects to date, and this has been a huge contribution to the success of the program. Each of those volunteers has given their time to help make their local environment healthy and keep their farms sustainable and productive.
CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
Across the country Landcarers are controlling pests and weeds, improving soil health, protecting vegetation and sharing information on better ways of doing things. Here in our local area, Landcare groups have been finding practical solutions to local problems so the community can enjoy the long-term benefit of a healthy and liveable environment. The Coalition’s National Landcare Programme is investing $1 billion over four years to help support better natural resource management across Australia. This includes more than $450 million directed to Australia’s 56 natural resource management organisations which do a great job working with local communities to protect the environment and support sustainable agriculture. Motivation to walk FOR Bev Smith, the driving force behind the Walk to d’Feet Motor Neurone Disease (MND) for many years, the motivation is very personal. Her partner, Robbie Skinner, became stricken with the disease almost ‘overnight’ and only lived two years after diagnosis. “It’s a very insidious disease, and with some people, the symptoms develop very quickly and some others I have known have lasted over twenty years,” said Ms Smith. “We thought Robbie had a stroke when his hand seized up one day, but the symptoms worsened quickly and he was referred to Sydney for lots of tests. “There’s no known cause or cure, only the offer for medication to prolong his life, which he didn’t want. It’s out there and more widespread than you think.” Bev appreciated the support of the Motor Neurone Disease Association while caring for Robbie, who provided them with any support and aids they needed. Past efforts in fundraising by Bev has seen $180,000 raised. The Walk to d’Feet MND will be held this Sunday, September 18 starting at 10am from Westport Park. The Walk will see hundreds of locals come together to show their support for those struggling with motor neurone disease. The Walk is approximately 5km and is wheelchair, stroller and dogs on-lead friendly. Registration on the day opens at 9am at Westport Park. For more information, go to www.mndnsw.asn.au or contact Kym Neilson by email to kymn@ mndnsw.asn.au or phone 02 8877 0999.
Some truth about taking a joyride
HOW many words can you think of that have been banned by a newspaper? How about joyride? In 1993, London’s Daily Mirror announced that it had banned joyride from its columns. Okay, I know that a newspaper such as the Daily Mirror banning such a word is a bit hard to understand. It’s a bit like the old Truth banning the word divorce. If you’re too young to remember Truth, my memory tells me it made its living from news of divorces and horse races, as well as anything sensational, but then some people might dispute that. ‘Snedden died on the job’ was one of its headings. If you don’t know what that meant, don’t ask me. Truth eventually died a lonely death and I can still hear the cheering. But back to joyride. The word joyride, according to most dictionaries, describes a ride taken in a car. But the word these days represents a ride taken illegally. In other words, while you were at home reading the paper, somebody was taking your car for a ride without your knowledge. In 1993 the Daily Mirror had had enough. It announced: “This is the last time the word joyride will appear in the Daily Mirror”. I don’t know if succeeding journalists at the
my
LAURIE BARBER
Daily Mirror have had a change of heart. They might have deliberately forgotten about the ban, because I could imagine the word was a key element in the Mirror’s coverage. The word now means almost the exact opposite to the original meaning. Originally the meaning was simply a pleasant ride in a motor car, or even an aeroplane. Very soon, however, it developed connotations of not having the approval of the vehicle’s owner. In 1908 the diary of WS Blunt said joyriders were London folk concerned with nothing but their own pleasure. Then a few years later London City Council passed a law that prevented city officers from taking joyrides. I don’t know what that meant, either. In 1910 the National Police Gazette said there was not much fun in taking a joyride in a taxi. That should not be taken as a reflection on local
taxi drivers, but the word represented taking a risk or doing something that was frowned upon. In 1973 the Scottish Sunday Express said a man who drove two cars for a joyride - I presume one at a time – was fined 75 pounds. The word quickly spread to Australia, but retained its meaning of taking a ride without the owner’s permission. Obviously, it comes from the word joy. This word has a much longer history. The first use, in writing, that I could find came in 1225 meaning gladness or delight or, in the words of my big dictionary, bliss. My big dictionary says joy can also be used as a term of endearment for a sweetheart. Shakespeare found a use for the word. But then if he couldn’t find a word to convey what he wanted to say, he simply made it up. The dictionary says a joyflight is an aerial joyride. So, don’t start thinking wild thoughts when you see that Jumbo parked at the airport. That’s not for you, even if the big dictionary says a meaning of joy is ‘to enjoy oneself’. Other words you could throw into the conversation now and then include joyance (delight), joyancy (joyanceness), joyant (joyanceness again) and a lot of other words including the unusually spelt joyfnes (youth). lauriebarber.com; lbarber@midcoast.com.au

Police put best boot forward By CHRISTINA PARKIN LOCAL officers from the Port Macquarie Police Station have collected and donated over 20 pairs of boots to Mission Australia as part of a charity drive to support people experiencing homelessness across NSW. More than 300 pairs of police boots were collected during the drive which was initially launched during Homelessness Week during the first week of August. “It’s the first year we have participated,” explained Senior Constable Steve Cherry, Crime Prevention Officer for the Mid North Coast Crime Management Unit. “There’s plenty of life still left in them and the leather boots are very comfortable - they’re great quality and it’s better to give to someone in need instead of just using them occasionally at home as yard boots. “When working with vulnerable people, our most important role is putting them in touch with helpful service providers and other support networks that may help them in finding a way out of homelessness. “We also know early intervention is integral to addressing this issue. “It’s far more effective to offer assistance for families and children before they become homeless. “This is where community groups can provide initial support, for instance.” “Often times homeless persons have been left with impossible choices that have contributed to their living situations,” explains Superintendent Allan Sicard, NSW Police Central Metropolitan Region Spokesperson on Vulnerable Communities. “For many Australians, the risk of losing their home can be a simple pay slip away, which is why community discussion and supporting service providers is so important.” Mission Australia State Director, Ben Carblis, thanked the NSW Police Force for their generosity. “Thanks to the generosity of the police force, we have collected and distributed hundreds of sturdy, waterproof boots to those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness,”
Constable Steve Cherry shows a sample of the used boots donated to Mission Australia for distribution to the homeless Mr Carblis said. “It has been a particularly cold and wet winter and Mission Australia staff has reported that men and women who received the boots
have expressed deep gratitude.” If you, or someone you know, is seeking information on homelessness services you can call Link2Home on 1800 152 152.
Fund targets safe driving programs COMMUNITIES throughout the mid north coast will be among the first recipients of the NSW government’s new Community Safety Fund, with just over $270,000 awarded to programs that encourage safe driving in the region. Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, and Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, recently announced the investment in programs running in Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Kempsey, Bowraville and the Nambucca Valley. Ms Pavey said the NSW government is proud to invest in the programs through the first round of the Community Safety Fund. “We are funding two unique community
programs, with just over $150,000 going to the Taree Indigenous Development and Employment Ltd and $120,000 to the Kempsey Neighbourhood Centre,” Ms Pavey said. “These programs will work to increase road safety and prevent unlicensed driving in our community.” Mrs Williams said the NSW government funding scheme allows local communities to create unique solutions to assist with challenges and invest in projects that will make the greatest difference. “Our community has identified that driving offences, including driving unlicensed, as a
significant problem in the young Indigenous population,” Mrs Williams said. “This program directly targets the issue through education and practical assistance to divert those most at risk from entering the criminal justice system.” Deputy Premier and Minister for Justice and Police Troy Grant said the NSW government’s Community Safety Fund, will deliver $10 million in grants over four years. “The NSW Government is investing in strong-evidence based projects to promote safety and steer at-risk people away from a path of crime,” Mr Grant said.

Young performers bring a new sound By LIZZIE McLEOD
Charles King (left) is pictured with Joshua Pring and Vanessa McTyer working to relocate the Historic Cemetery’s heritage roses to their new home at Endeavour House
A rosy future all-round STUDENTS from Novaskill’s horticulture class in Port Macquarie teamed up with participants from Novaskill’s work for the dole program (WFD) to remove and relocate 60 mature rose plants from the Port Macquarie Historic Cemetery. As part of a facelift for the gardens at the Historic Cemetery, WFD participants also removed tons of rock and concrete in preparation for rejuvenation of the area. In a prickly operation, all the plants were carefully removed and put into pots before
being transported across town to their new home. Endeavour House at Hamilton Green, on Hastings River Drive now will have a rosier future as the recipient of the plants. Novaskill’s Horticulture teacher Vanessa McTyer said it was a great opportunity for her students to learn correct techniques for removing and replanting mature rose plants, and a great team effort from the two groups to get it all done in one day.
THE Luminescence Chamber Singers are on their first ever tour and cannot wait to show their talent to this region. The group of young singers in their 20s from Canberra have been putting in many hours a week preparing for their inaugural tour ‘Descent into Madness’. Although this is the group’s first tour, they have been performing to audiences since 2013 and have worked up a bit of a reputation for themselves. “We are really excited about this tour,” said Lilly Hannock, general manager of Luminescence Chamber Singers. “We are going from Canberra to Sydney to Port Macquarie to Newcastle and back to Canberra. I’m actually from Port Macquarie originally so I know the music scene relatively well.” The new, young, un-conducted chamber ensemble includes eight musicians who will be performing a dramatic concert comparing chaos to clarity; the scary and the silly. “ ‘Descent into Madness’ includes works that are influenced by madness and we are actually world premiering a work by Alice Chance,” said Ms Hannock. “She has written it for us and it’s about the witch hunt and the witches.” The beauty of ensembles like the Luminescence Chamber Singers is in their ability to really get a reaction out of the audience, explains Ms Hannock. “They have the ability to manipulate the audience’s emotions. There’s the ‘wow’ factor, a sadness factor, a tingling feeling on your arm, the joyous factor.” The group are also no strangers to ARIA award-winning artists such as pianist and composer Sally Whitwell, Sally Greenaway,

Alice Chance, Olle Palmqvist and Louise Page, and working with these inspirational performers has definitely paid off. “I think the audience will see something that Port Macquarie doesn’t normally get,” Ms Hannock said. “It is an advanced, exciting, new, contemporary choral theme which is conducted by world acclaimed composer Gordon Hamilton and a world premier by Alice Chance. “The organisation is in its beginning stages, but I think they are going to grow exponentially over the next few years. It’s just the beginning for us.” The Luminescence Chamber Singers will perform their ‘Descent into Madness’ concert on September 23 from 7.30pm at the St Columba Anglican School Chapel in Port Macquarie. Competition puts focus on health
THE Mid North Coast Local Health District has launched the nation’s newest, and most exciting, photographic competition in a bid to improve health literacy. The Panorama Photographic Competition was launched nationwide recently and is offering more than $45,000 in prizes. Project Manager Carolyn Guichard said the competition was part of the Health District’s ‘Your Health Link’ initiative, a strategy aimed at enhancing community understanding of information about health and health care, and how people can apply that information to their lives. An online health education tool, Your Health Link provides a wide range of information on health facts, support and counselling services, legal, finance and housing, mental health, drug and alcohol, sexual health and more. “Entrants in the competition actively participate in creating visual images to represent a health-related topic,” Ms Guichard said. “Through the photographic process, the entrants are required to investigate the subject matter and thereby increase their health knowledge.” As well as a mobile photography section and an open category, the competition also features a section for primary and high schools, with prizes for students and their schools. Information about the competition, including entry details, is available online at www. yourhealthlinkphotocomp.com.au Entries close on November 1 and the winners will be announced at an exhibition of the finalists at the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie on December 1.

Christina Brewer and Noeleen Hayward serving champagne to guests on arrival at the recent Inner Wheel high tea/fashion parade held to raise funds for cord blood research
Wheeling in some help IT is well recognised that cord blood stem cell transplants have become one of the new frontiers of medical science. Inner Wheel Australia as an organisation has raised nearly $2.3million and given 38 grants to researchers. Those researchers are working in different medical fields using cord blood stem cells. They have also discovered that the stem cells collected from the placenta are equally as useful as the ones from the umbilical cord, and that all these cells can replace damaged cells throughout the body. For example, many young patients who have suffered with various types of leukaemia are able to make a full recovery on receiving a cord blood stem cell transplant or a double transplant. Recent research has shown the potential for the use of stem cells in treating cystic fibrosis by building or repairing the cells of the lining of the lungs. Other research is looking into applications in the treatment of cerebral palsy and prostate cancer, in addition to improving the quality of cord blood transplants. The ‘Coin for a Cord’ fundraiser occurs at the end of April and a percentage from sales of the Treloar rose named ‘The Gift of Friendship’
also contribute to the funds raised by Inner Wheel Australia to cord blood research. The Inner Wheel Club of Port Macquarie West works hard at raising funds and recently eighty ladies enjoyed a wonderful high tea/ fashion parade in a Parisian setting organised by their members. President, Jacqui Everett, together with her committee has planned a great year ahead. “I am very excited about the celebration of our 40th Birthday at the end of September this year and the fund-raising activities and friendship events we are planning for the next twelve months,” says Mrs Everett. “The new annual theme chosen by the International President, Olyemisi Alatise from Nigeria, is ‘Touch a Heart’ and we will be working towards achieving that aim through friendship and service to the community.” If you’d like to become part of the Inner Wheel Club of Port Macquarie West, feel welcome to contact the club by email to iiw. au.portmacquariewestiwclub@gmail.com or ring Helen Crossley on 6582 7510. The club meets for dinner on the last Thursday of the month at 6.30 for 7pm at Port Macquarie Panthers Club.

THE Panthers Bridge Club recently took the opportunity to turn their recent annual championship into an opportunity to raise funds for the Jim Bruce Urology and Cancer Trust. The presentation of the cheque for $240 was presented by the president, Diana Zanon to the Mayor, Peter Besseling, a trustee for the Jim Bruce Urology and Cancer Trust. Since its inception in 2009 by the Bruce family, the trust has raised many thousands in donations and provided the community with much needed medical equipment and support in the fight against prostate cancer on the mid north coast. Further details can be obtained from their website www.Jimbrucetrust.org.au To date funds raised by the trust have been utilised to enhance urological care by establishing a total of 15 nursing scholarships for local nurses to have advanced education in urological care; hosting of two ‘Health Forums’ at the Glasshouse in 2012 and 2013; the purchase of a bladder scanner for use in the community; the purchase of green light laser equipment for locally based specialists, which helps reduce the length of hospital stays and the purchase of stepper/stabiliser for use at the Port Macquarie Private Hospital. In Port Macquarie, Bridge is played during the day except Sunday but also on Tuesday nights at the Hastings Bridge Club at Hamilton Green on Hastings River Drive. Playing Bridge is mentally stimulating, can be addictive and above all gives rise to lasting friendships. Bridge is very much a game of skill with a smattering of luck. Around thirty boards of cards are played by each pair of players, taking approximately three and a half hours. The Panthers Bridge Club is looking for players on Wednesdays at 9.45 for 10am. A short break for lunch and the afternoon session resumes, finishing around 2.30pm. The cost on the day is $4 including free tea and coffee. To play Bridge you must have a basic knowledge of the game and to have that knowledge, around six lessons is needed to get started. Anyone wishing to learn should contact Yvonne Cains on 6584 5766 or U3A for further details. Anyone wishing to play can contact Val on 6584 4475.

Enterta nment WEEKLY
‘Allo coming to Port “LISTEN very carefully, I shall say ‘zis only once!” … The Players Theatre in Port Macquarie will soon be staging ‘Allo ‘Allo, the archetypal sitcom set in a café of a Nazi-occupied French town during the Second World War. Opening night on Friday, September 23, is set to reveal Rene Artois, the unfortunate café owner, trying to juggle bad French accents, German officers, the Gestapo, British airmen, the French Resistance, lost sausages, his wife and two wily French waitresses in addition to a British spy disguised as a French gendarme, whose serial mispronunciations led to such classics as ‘Good Moaning.’ The German military have stolen valuable French artefacts, including a painting of ‘The Fallen Madonna’ by Van Klomp (usually referred to as ‘The Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies’). However two officers, Colonel Kurt von Strohm and Captain Hans Geering, have decided to keep the artefacts for themselves for after the war, and they coerce René into hiding them in his café. Hitler also wants the paintings and sends Herr Otto Flick of the Gestapo to the town to find them. However, the Germans are not Renee’s only problem. The French Resistance, led by the

singular ‘Michelle’, forces Renee to aid their persistent attempts to return two bumbling British airmen to England. All the time, René must keep secret from his wife his long-running affairs with his two waitresses or risk losing his cherished café. The popular series from 1982-1992 produced 85 episodes and used René’s monologues to camera to ensure the comedy maintained a large number of subplots and returning characters. “It will certainly appeal to a wide audience,” says the show’s director, Cameron Marshall, who is also a master of the pun as an announcer for ABC Radio Mid North Coast. Cameron was inspired to suggest the comedy to the Players Theatre committee when he enjoyed a staging in Tamworth recently. This production of ‘Allo ‘Allo is the fourth production of five for the year – ‘The Producers’, ‘The Odd Couple’, ‘Grease’ with the musical ‘Sweet Charity’ to follow. Productions will be held on Friday and Saturday nights from 8pm and Sundays at 2pm from Friday, September 23 to Sunday October 9 and tickets can be purchased from the Glasshouse or online at www.playerstheatre.org.au/bookonline.html

THERE is no doubt about it, John Farnham is the voice of the Australian music industry. Revered as one of the best male vocalists – by both fans and fellow musicians – he has had an incredibly versatile career since 1967. The second leg of the ‘Red Hot Summer Tour’ will be headlined by the legendary John Farnham with special guests James Reyne, Daryl Braithwaite, Shannon Noll and Taxiride and performing in Port Macquarie at Westport Park on Saturday, February 4, 2017. Headlining this leg of the ‘Red Hot Summer Tour’, John Farnham will be showcasing a repertoire that spans almost five decades and that promises to be an unforgettable experience. Over the years he has released hit after hit, including Pressure Down, Reasons, A Touch of Paradise, Age of Reason, Two Strong Hearts, Angels, Talk of The Town, Chain Reaction, Burn for You, Have A Little Faith (In Us) and That’s Freedom. James Reyne’s music too, has been part of Australian music history for decades, from his time fronting the legendary Australian Crawl through to his successful solo career. When it comes to recognisable voices in the Australian music scene, there are few as impressive as that of Daryl Braithwaite in a diverse career that has spanned decades. Starting his career in the 1970s as the frontman for Sherbet, Daryl was crowned King of Pop and the band produced 20 national Top 40 singles, before setting out in the 1980s on his own solo career, releasing smash hit singles such as One Summer, As The Days Go By and The Horses to name a few. With 10 consecutive Top 10 singles in the charts, it’s fair to say that Shannon Noll has since come to prominence from his stand-out performances on the first series of television talent show Australian Idol. With Top 5 ARIA platinum selling albums, six Top 40 ARIA singles and a plethora of rave reviews, the band Taxiride has toured massively throughout Australia, and also North America, Europe and Asia. Music fans are encouraged to get in early to secure tickets so they don’t miss out as one of the biggest line-ups of Australian music royalty share the same stage. Tickets are on sale at 9am on Monday, September 19, from the Ticketmaster site www.ticketmaster.com.au or the Glasshouse site www.glasshouse.org.au For more information, please visit www.redhotsummertour.com.au

PORT Macquarie Sailing Club held their first race of the 2016-2017 sailing season on Sunday with race 1 of the spring series. It was held in a light and variable, mostly south westerly wind, which made for slow racing. The run-out tide made it hard for the upriver works, especially the last one to the finish when the breeze all but died out after a rain shower. Two catamarans and a trimaran contested the mult-hull division which was won on yardstick by Frank O’Rourke on ‘Dino’ followed by Grady and Alice McNee on ‘Ex for Breakfast’. Ron Apps on ‘Kimbo 3’ struggled with the dying breeze, and motored the last bit over the finish line against the current. There was a larger fleet of monohulls, although it was made up entirely of the smaller boats. The two Lasers and the Impulse had a tight tussle all race, but eventually Terry Howard in ‘Ratz’ finished 20 seconds ahead of Scott Witchard in ‘Devocean’ after Tim Wuth in ‘Piglet’ dropped back in the dying breeze at the end of the race. Stuart Symons and Zac Jeffries in ‘Jupiter’ were forced to retire as the breeze died out completely and got a tow back with the safety boat.

Common sense calls lacking “
What frustrates fans are the inconsistencies and lack of common sense Panthers struck first finals blood. Out went the Titans and Dogs. There were plus signs for all four winners, however the injury-depleted Sharks and a Panthers side that sizzled home will put some doubt in tipsters’ minds. Just two games this weekend: Cowboys v Broncos (Friday, September 16, 7.55pm, 1300 Smiles Stadium, Townsville): For many this was tipped to be the grand final, however one of the two Queensland giants will

YOUR Local Independent has gone all NRL season without saying one bad thing about the referees – but come on! For those that follow this NRL tipping column, we went for the upset – the Titans to beat the Broncos - in the opening round of the finals series last weekend. However a series of dubious refereeing decisions saw the gallant Titans eventually tumbled out 44-28. That final scoreline flattered the Broncos. The Gold Coast went into the break leading 18-16. However they continually were on the wrong end of refereeing decisions that very few teams could have survived. There were at least six calls that went the Broncos way that could be classed as far worse than 50-50. The referees are the cornerstone of our game and at all but the elite level should not be publicly criticised. There is nothing worse than the angry parent having a crack at a 14-year-old official at a junior sporting event. These young officials need our support 100 per cent of the time. However at the elite level officials have so many more support mechanisms. But what frustrates fans are the inconsistencies and lack of common sense. A classic example: why use the bunker to change a ref’s call on one occasion, yet not use it on another when obviously the on-field officials have either got it wrong or have missed the infringement. Most fans can actually accept a referee making a mistake in a fast-moving play. Inevitably these mistakes tend to even out across a game. However the injection of the bunker on some occasions and not others is annoying. Anyway! The Broncos, Sharks, Storm and

bow out this weekend. The Cows should not take too much pain out of their 16-10 loss to the Storm. Their form was solid without being spectacular. They have the massive benefit of playing at home. The Broncos have not returned to the scintillating form they showed in the first half of the season. They are winning games, but not with the same class and emphasis. This could be the game that brings back their best, if so they are title bound. However the same can be said for the Cowboys and they appear closer to that ‘best
game’ scenario. ∙ Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Raiders v Panthers (Saturday, September 17, 7.45pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Who has the momentum and right mind frame here? The Raiders charged into the semis before losing narrowly to a depleted Sharks. The Panthers played a very dominant second half to kill off the Dogs. Form across the latter part of the season gives the Raiders the edge and they also have the massive benefit of playing at home. However there is just something about the Panthers. They have been ‘good’ all year. But on Sunday they showed something special. They are starting to look like a Melbourne Cup horse who has sat mid-field for the entire journey, but halfway down the home straight has jumped out of the ground with a withering run. This will be a great game. ∙ Your Local Independent tips: Raiders
