This is truly ‘Epic’

IT is epic by name and is quickly becoming epic by reputation. The annual Ray White Rural’s Epic Horse Sale and Campdraft is expected to attract record crowds to the Kempsey Showgrounds this weekend. The event began three years ago with the sole purpose of putting Kempsey back on the map as a town of equine excellence. Since then it has quickly etched a place on the equine calendar. “The Macleay Valley has a long history with Australian Stock Horses and back in 1955 one of the country’s best horses was born behind the Willawarrin Hotel,” according to the event’s founder, Mark Haywood. “Abbey has in excess of 2500 descendants registered in the Australian Stock Horse Book, and Kempsey was also the first place in Australia to establish a cutting club in August, 1969, when the East Coast Cutting Horse Association was born at the Kempsey Showground.” The inaugural Working Dog Sale will be held in conjunction with this year’s Epic Horse Sale. The event runs from Friday through to Sunday. • See Sue Paterick’s full story Page 6 Pictured: This beautiful horse called Clairvale Acres Inca was the top seller at last year’s Ray White Rural Epic Horse Sale and Campdraft held at Kempsey Showground. A hearty ‘well done’ to two champions

Volunteer Suzanne comes all the way from Sydney each year with her husband for the Kylies Beach Camp

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE annual Kylies Beach Camp is turning into a working holiday for many locals. Although the aim of the annual weeklong event is to maintain the harmful bitou bush, many campers are returning each year for the fresh air, the scenery, and the campfire conversations. “The people that come to the camp just love it,” said Sue Baker, organiser of Kylies Beach Camp. “There’s a real sense of reward and satisfaction and you can see the results of your effort. Plus there’s a core group of volunteers who come every year, some from as far away as Sydney and Newcastle, and they really bond together and there’s lots of interesting chats around the campfire at night.” The annual bush regeneration camp held at Kylies Beach in the iconic Crowdy Bay National Park is just 45 minutes from Taree and 15 minutes south of Laurieton. In 2013 a severe bushfire affected the

southern park section which resulted in mass germination of the bitou bush. The NSW Environmental Trust offered a $97,000 grant from which a contractor was brought on and volunteers have almost completely eradicated the bitou. “The work that has been done with the bitou is fantastic, it’s basically other weeds we are focusing on now,” said Sue. “We have to follow up to make sure there are no Bitou seedlings around brought in by birds, but it’s the other weeds now like lantana especially that we are working on. “So most of the hard work is already done in this area; the main role now is the vitally important follow up and previously worked sites such as magnificent Diamond Head.” Sue says the volunteers will have plenty of time to swim, relax, and take in the natural landscape. “There are two beaches, and where we camp is just behind Kylies Beach which is a beautiful, totally natural beach,” said Sue. “And then at the northern end of that beach you’ve got the spectacular Diamond Head.

“In past years we’ve had 23-33 people and we’d love to get 25 people coming along this year.” The camp is held from April 3-8 and volunteers can come and go as they please. “People can come for just a day, or they can camp the whole time. It’s really up to them,” Sue said. “We will be pulling out small weeds and the larger weeds will be cut at the base with loppers and then a weed paint will be applied. “The volunteers can be of any age but will need to be physically active to partake in the bush regeneration activities.” The annual bush regeneration camp is a free event. There will be a trailer available, fully equipped with cooking utensils as well as tables, which will be set up under a tarpaulin. A barbecue is provided on the Saturday night. All people need to bring is a tent or caravan, food, and sleeping gear. The volunteers are encouraged to wear protective clothing such as long pants, a long sleeve shirt, and a hat. Step into nature and serenity at the 2018 Kylies Beach Camp. Phone Sue Baker on 6559 7134 for further information and to book in.

TWO members of the Port Macquarie-Hastings branch of Heart Support Australia have been honoured for their exemplary and dedicated service to the heart patient support organisation. Life Membership was recently presented to Oliver (Boy) Vinson and Eric Elms at a special function attended by about 50 branch members. President Robert Edwards paid tribute to both men, who have spent countless hours over the past decade encouraging heart patients at Port Macquarie Base Hospital along their road to recovery. “Boy joined our branch in March 2007,” Mr Edwards said. “He always gets involved in our activities, such as the monthly markets, walks and other outings. Boy, who is in his 90s, is an inspiration to all our members. “Eric joined Heart Support in November 2008 and has, from day one, been involved in everything our branch does, even while he was recovering from double knee replacements,” Mr Edwards said. “He is a regular at the hospital rehabilitation unit, helping out where he can and just being there to give others an incentive to get on with life. “As he moves closer to 100 years of age, he certainly is a source of inspiration and encouragement for others.” The Heart Support volunteers have a close working relationship with Port Macquarie Base Hospital. They have provided an extraordinary 7000 volunteer hours over the past seven years to heart patients in the Cardiac Unit, Rehabilitation and other units at the hospital. They have also gifted to the hospital more than $55,000 in medical equipment and items that improve patient amenity. Recently, their efforts were acknowledged when staff from Cardiology Services at Port Macquarie Base hosted a thank you morning tea. Coronary Care Unit Clinical Nurse Specialist Kathy Boom, Cardiologist Dr Kristian Prados and Cardiac Rehabilitation Coordinator Jannie Denyer all paid tribute to the volunteers. Ms Denyer also thanked the hospital for welcoming the volunteers as an integral part of the patient rehabilitation process. “The support they give to Carolyn (Community Physiotherapist Carolyn Hamilton) and me is amazing,” Ms Denyer said. “We would not be able to do what we do without them.”

It’s a mirror moment

Games not all about fun AS a parent and teacher, I am concerned about the growing spread, acceptance and addictive effect of the video survival game – ‘Fortnite’, on our children. As carers we need to be super vigilant about the material our children are accessing online, playing and talking about, and that they are okay. If not, we need to stop it and not endorse it in anyway. My son was bullied at primary school because he did not know about this game or how to play it and was excluded from playing a simulated game outdoors at lunchtime because he was not ‘in’ on this. Furthermore, his whole class were talking about it and accepting this as normal afterschool activity and so were students in my high school classes. In my ignorance and non-knowledge of the game, I let my son download this game, thinking that this was the newest Minecraft craze and that if everyone else was doing it, that it must be okay. On the weekend I discovered the addictive effects of this game on my son’s mental health and saw firsthand what this game is really about. While the game encourages teamwork and

communication with others, it is also a high adrenaline action game, where kids race and fight against others for their survival, to be the last one standing (similar to the Hunger Games) and choose their choice of guns to kill their opponents. Yes, they can build walls, buildings and barriers, and even choose decorative skins and outfits to wear. But make no mistake about it; it is violent. And violence towards others is NOT okay. The addictive nature of the game, means that you build points each mission, and can buy new materials and equipment, and progress in the queue and ranking to be number one or in the top 10. The adrenaline and excitement are addictive, and when I asked my son to stop, he picked up a chair and threw it at me. My message is clear – please check and be supper vigilant about what your children are playing, because it is up to us, our community to end this together. Name and address supplied

DOWN TO the minority of older residents who keep complaining about the Kempsey Cinema development for the Kempsey CBD. Enough of the negativity, the immature remarks and abuse towards people with conflicting opinions. You may be vocal, but you do not speak for the rest of the Macleay Valley on this issue. I am happy for a portion of my rates to go into this project because there is nothing to do here for young people. Kempsey deserves a new cinema complex. I didn’t use the Bandbox because its old and uncomfortable, but I will use a new modern facility. I know plenty of young people and young families in this valley that will use this cinema regularly. They didn’t bother to grade and level it they just threw tons of cement and gravel mix over the top and rolled it out, all in one day. Still not sealed. We have a lot of our elderly and infirm being abused and bullied in their ‘safe’ environments in later years. The general working public are just bullied in to complacency and we’ve seen politicians using bullying tactics to get their way, or be bullied out of office. What the hell is that about? It’s a horrific reflection of our ‘modern’ society, and you don’t have to go far to see it. It’s happening all day, everyday in our backyard. I heard last week of a young local kid who was hung in a tree by his back pack, by another older kid after school. Thankfully the strap on the backpack broke or the younger boy would have suffered a lot more at the hands of his perpetrator. I don’t know about you, but I think it’s time to get back to grass roots and start looking at having an attitude readjustment. Maybe take a look at how are we bringing up our youth and what bullying abusive behaviours are they seeing to think bullying and abuse are tolerable and acceptable behaviour?

TO James Clay and his team for a brilliant, reasonably priced and efficient job remodelling my bathroom. But especially for their courteous, cleanliness, attitude and always doing what they say they will. Highly recommend to anyone looking for tradesmen.

Thumbs Down TO the overgrown gardens and verges at the Donut, Wrights Road Roundabout and New Oxley Highway between are a disgrace. It’s appalling to both locals and holidaymakers!

I WISH to thank Gavin from Romer Locks for installing another lock inside my driver’s door in my commodore ute. The first one become faulty which came from the dealer so cheers mate, thank you!

I THINK it would be fair to say that we’ve all endured bullying in some shape or form, at some stage in our lives. We’d probably all agree being bullied is a horrid experience and should not be tolerated in any capacity - verbal, physical, emotional, cyber – it all amounts to one thing! Abuse. I was bullied at school from a young age. With the maiden name of Hooker, on top of being the local publican’s daughter, I was sweet pickings for the bullying types. My resident bully used to stalk me after school. I’d be working and feel like I was being watched – 9 times out of 10 I’d turn around to see her slinking around just watching. She’d make a few threatening hand signals and slink off. She absolutely terrified the crap out of me for about 3 years! Looking back, the whole thing was quite ridiculous. But I didn’t think that at the time. It was debilitating. I can’t remember this girl ever saying a word to me. She just followed and watched. If looks could kill I was dead! One evil glance my way and I’d instantly feel sick to the stomach and frozen to the spot. I never knew what her problem was with me, but I’ll never forget how I felt at the time. Over the years I’ve personally experienced all sorts of bullying. I’ve watched my kids be bullied as they’ve grown up and I watch with the world as the wave of cyber bullying takes its grip on the masses. We have reached a new level of low and disgraceful behaviour in society. Our youth are suiciding in what seems to be amounting to plague proportions from experiencing excessive bullying.

Help koalas: plant a tree! By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

Pick up kit and start ‘cleaning’ FREE ‘Picitup’ kits are now being offered by Kempsey Shire Council for locals keen to do their bit to help keep our community clear of litter. Council’s Waste Education Officer, Gavin Hughes, said the Picitup kits are a simple but effective way of helping people clean up litter as well as track down where it comes from. “The kits include a handmade Boomerang shoulder-bag, four litter sacks, two pairs of gloves and a booklet to record what litter is picked up,” Mr Hughes said.

“We are encouraging residents to collect a kit, remove litter when they are walking around the shire, and record what they collect. “Putting the collected litter in public or household bins gets the waste to the right place. The removal of litter in public spaces prevents our street drains from blocking or litter travelling into our rivers and beaches.” The Picitup kits are available at Council’s Customer Service Centre, located at 22 Tozer St, West Kempsey.

IT’S now easier than ever to help our koalas. The Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie is calling on the Mid North Coast to come in and pick up a tree as part of the ‘10,000 Trees’ project. “The NSW Forestry Corporation and the council have given us 10,000 trees, and we need to get them planted quickly,” said Sue Ashton, media spokesperson for the Koala Hospital Port Macquarie and the Koala Preservation Society Australia Inc. “So we are putting a call out to the community at large, to schools and for kids to plant on school property but also to take them home. “We are looking mainly for land holders because we are trying to create a corridor of trees linking to parcels of forest, creating a pathway for koalas and other native wildlife.” Sue says the Koala Hospital is really hoping to get landowners who might not be using sections their land or want to rehabilitate their land, rather than having the trees in crowded suburban areas. They are encouraging land holders who might border national parks and State Forests to embrace the tree planting program. “As much as we appreciate anybody taking trees, we are trying to create the corridors away from the built-up areas. We want these corridors away from motor vehicles and dogs - the things that are causing so much death in the koala population,” Sue explained. “Their chance of survival is better and no trees - no koalas. “These turpentine trees should be planted 5-12 metres apart and can be planted in groups to create a corridor. As the plants develop they

will become larger and koalas can actually jump about 2 metres, so if you’ve got a corridor of trees, they can actually jump from tree to tree without needing to get onto the ground.” The Koala Hospital received the trees on March 7, and within only hours of announcing the 10,000 Trees project, a flood of people appeared and were doing their bit to help. “A farmer in Wauchope has already approached us and he backs onto the State Forest and so he’s going to create a corridor from the start of his property back towards the forest, creating a perfect corridor for the koalas,” said Sue. “We also had a guy come in this morning from Kendall and he has 60 acres and he took two trays of trees and that’s just fantastic. If people start doing that it’s all going to help. “It’s just so exciting to see people walking out with trays of trees. These people must have just heard about the project on the radio and are have come straight in to start collecting the trays of trees and it just makes you feel so good.” These trees will not only help the plight of our koalas, but will also provide food and shelter for many other native wildlife in the area. If schools, private and public land holders and anyone in the community from Kew to Kempsey has some spare, open space for tree planting, please contact the Koala Hospital on 6584 1523. And, if any member of the community has some spare time to help plant the trees, please contact the Koala Hospital. Free laundry offers dignity ... and a conversation By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC ORANGE Sky Australia is certainly ‘cleaning up’ in Port Macquarie. Orange Sky, the world’s first free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness, recently launched ‘Maddy’, the latest van to hit the streets of the Port Macquarie region. “The van cost $110,000 to get up and running,” said David Tubb, Head of Operations at Orange Sky Australia. “The majority of that was raised by the ‘Make a Difference’ team here in Port. They raised that in just nine months and we launched ‘Maddy’ in October last year.” The van has been helping many homeless people across the region to not only wash their clothes, but also offers them an important opportunity to socialize. “I’ve just been down in Port Macquarie for the week seeing the impact we make and there was a gentlemen there who was sleeping rough in a tent,” explained David. “To be able to wash all of his belongings obviously takes a lot of trust from him to hand them over to us, but it was really good because it was raining the day before so all of his clothes were completely saturated. We washed and dried them and made sure he had something clean and warm and dry to sleep in that night. “But the interesting thing about that situation is that it only takes an hour to wash and dry all the clothes, but that gentlemen stuck around for another hour after that just to have a chat with our volunteers. He actually said something that I’d never heard before which was: ‘Davo, ever since I became

homeless in November, it’s the most bored I’ve ever been in my life’. And we could see the difference in his confidence from before and after the shift. “So that time to connect with people is really important. These people might not get to chat to someone for days at a time so they might even use the laundry service as an excuse for a conversation, and we are happy to offer that too.” At the moment volunteers are doing two to three hour shifts with five volunteers on a shift. David hopes to double the number of volunteers and the shifts so ‘Maddy’ can reach more people. “These shifts are held in Port Macquarie, Taree, Kempsey, Laurieton, and Wauchope,” said David. “It’s really cool because the van is on four wheels so we can move it around a fair bit. The shifts take place mostly within business hours, lunch time and afternoons between 3-5pm.” Orange Sky was started in Brisbane three and a half years ago by two 20-year-old mates Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett. “We’ve got 22 vans all around Australia,” David said. “We are in every state and territory apart from the Northern Territory, but we are hoping to get a van in Darwin in the next couple of months, and we have a team of about 1,000 volunteers around the country. “We are trying to double the number of shifts we are offering so to do that we are trying to double the number of volunteers.” For more information about the great work Orange Sky is doing, or to find out how to volunteer or donate, visit http://www. orangeskylaundry.com.au

This classic event caters to camp drafters, cutters and any equine sport. With a total prize pool of $35,000 in cash and prizes, including Roohide trophy saddles, it is no wonder the Epic Horse Sale is one the most lucrative campdrafts on the coast. Over 1000 vendors and competitors are expected to attend from all over NSW and Queensland. Campdrafting will commence on Friday, March 16, with last year’s Epic Draft run over two rounds followed by the final. This draft was postponed from last year due to inclement weather conditions. The 2018 Epic Draft will follow with round one. The Open Campdraft will trail this event before the second round commences. The final of the 2018 Open Draft will commence on Saturday morning March 17, followed by the final of the 2018 Epic Campdraft. Pre-works of this year’s sale horses will commence on Saturday afternoon at 12pm, with

the sale commencing on Sunday morning, March 18, at 10am. Horses purchased from previous Epic Sales that are five years and under, and also remain in the ownership of the purchaser, are eligible for free entry to the Epic Draft. Both buyers and vendors from the previous year’s sale are eligible to nominate three horses for the Open Campdraft. The inaugural Working Dog Sale will be held in conjunction with this year’s Epic Horse Sale. These wonderfully smart and energetic dogs will be pre-worked on Friday evening from 5.30pm, with the sale on Saturday evening from 4 to 4.30pm. The Epic Horse Sale began three years ago with the sole purpose of putting Kempsey back on the map as a town of equine excellence. “The Macleay Valley has a long history with Australian Stock Horses and back in 1955 one of the country’s best horses was born behind the Willawarrin Hotel,” Mark explained.

Epic sale now even better By SUE PATERICK WINSTON Churchill once said there was something about the outside of a horse that was good for the inside of a man, and if the continued success of Ray White Rural’s Epic Horse Sale and Campdraft was anything to go by scores of people agree. According to founder, Mark Haywood, the Epic Horse Sale and Campdraft is steadily growing in stature and is now a recognised event on the equine calendar. “Our aim is to provide an affordable sale with an atmosphere that vendors, buyers, competitors and the general public will enjoy and want to be part of, and continue to talk about, long after the event,” Mark said. “We also want to bring Australian Quarter Horse and Stock Horse enthusiasts together for a social weekend, while getting them to display their horse skills and maybe win some prizes and money.”

“Abbey has in excess of 2500 descendants registered in the Australian Stock Horse Book, and Kempsey was also the first place in Australia to establish a cutting club in August, 1969, when the East Coast Cutting Horse Association was born at the Kempsey Showground.” At last year’s Epic Horse Sale the average price for a horse was about $8000 with the top price horse going for $22,000. Horses went to the Hunter Valley, Western NSW, New England, Queensland and Alice Springs. During the Epic Horse Sale there will be a canteen serving food and drinks, a bar and a coffee van. On the Friday night there will also be a welcome barbeque with drinks for vendors from 5.30pm. For more information on the Epic Horse Sale and Campdraft go to www.raywhitekempsey. com.au, Google Epic Horse Sale or call Mark Haywood on 0437286494 or Jesse Omullane on 0412 326 373.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson On Sunday I had the privilege of joining thousands of enthusiastic runners as they took part in this year’s Port Macquarie Running Festival. What a wonderful spectacle it was, as runners as young as five lined up with those aged over 85 for a morning of spirited fun. My job on the day was easier than most, blowing the starting hooter and presenting the finishing medals, and I don’t think I’ve shaken so many sweaty hands in my life! Whilst we don’t all have the ability of Rob de Castella or Usain Bolt, it was so motivating to see

runners and walkers of all abilities getting out there, giving it a go and doing their best. I’ve always said that the only time I run is when something is chasing me, however seeing the emotion, dedication and commitment of the thousands who took part may have changed my thinking. The economic and social benefits that events like the running festival bring to our region are enormous. Our town was really buzzing right across the weekend, cafés and restaurants were full, our shops were doing a roaring trade and our new Town Square looked great, providing the

pmhc.nsw.gov.au perfect location for the finishing line. Congratulations must go to the enthusiastic volunteers who help make the event run so smoothly, and for the way you warmly welcome visitors to our region. Thank you, the event would not be the success it is without you. And do you know what? I’ve been so inspired by the thousands who ran this year that I’ve made the commitment to take part in the 5km event myself next year. I’m so looking forward to it, even if I’m not being chased! Until next week, Peta.

Drive down memory lane Vintage Datsuns on display at Douglas Vale

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC TAKE a drive down memory lane to the Datsun’s Sports Owners National Championships in Port Macquarie. Datsun car owners from across Australia will be displaying their beloved cars on Saturday, March 24, at the Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard. “We have Datsun car clubs all around Australia and once a year we meet up, and this year the big event is being held in Port Macquarie for the very first time,” said John Dagwell, member of the Datsun’s Sports Owners Club Port Macquarie. “There will be people from Sydney and Newcastle but we also have club members coming from Queensland, throughout New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia.” Most people have fond memories of the Datsun car brand, but these car club members travel back in time on a regular basis. “I bought one back in 1999 and I thought it would be a good project and the hobby went from there. It sort of gets in your blood,” said John. “Now I’ve got a 1968 2 litre Datsun which I bought last year. It’s the fourth one that I’ve owned. I’ve been working on it a lot lately and I’m looking forward to showing it off at the event this month. It doesn’t just sit in the garage either. I take it for a spin once a week with my wife in Port Macquarie. It’s great to drive around in.” There will be approximately 30 cars on display at the Datsun event with judges who will be selecting the winners in various categories

Port Macquarie’s John Dagwell with his prized 1968 Datsun, which will be on display at the Douglas Vale Historic Homestead from entries from all around Australia. “The cars themselves were made between 1962 and 1970 and they only made 50,000 of the cars worldwide,” John explained. “The oldest car will be a 1963 Datsun and the cars range in motor sizes from a 1.5litre, a 1.6litre, and a 2 litre. “They look similar to the untrained eye, but there is a two-seater sports car with a convertible soft top. Some people have removable hard tops, which make them look pretty different. Some are rare motorcars and they can sell for quite

a bit too. One Datsun car sold recently at a car auction for $42,000.” Douglas Vale’s unique wine tastings and Devonshire teas will be available on the day as well as tours of the homestead and there will also be a raffle. Community L nks

with Robbie Lloyd

Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.

Making creative futures THINGS are buzzing at No. 4 Albert Circuit’s MakerSpace that the college opened earlier this year. If you’re interested in working on creative arts and crafts programs, or joining people learning new skills in construction, landscaping and horticulture, now is the time to come and see us. We will be partnering with the Port Macquarie Women’s Shed in the MakerSpace soon, to create opportunities for women of all ages to share their skills and learn hands-on from peers and mentors. The college is always looking for volunteers willing to roll up their sleeves and work alongside people learning new skills. So your work backgrounds are important, to be able to share knowledge and experience. Soon we will be welcoming people in recovery from experiences in the justice system, so they can begin to build new pathways to work and reconnection with society. And we are also seeking more tools and equipment, to help expand the range of programs we can offer in the MakerSpace. So please let us know if you‘ve got a garage full of stuff you want to steer towards a new home. We can come and pick it up. If you have a desire to break into new fields of work, give us a call. Ring us on 6583 7288 or check out the website at www. skillslink.edu.au

Awards spotlight top apprentices NSW training nominations close soon: Local employers, group training organisations and vocational trainers are encouraged to nominate deserving apprentices for the 2018 NSW Training Awards. I want to make sure our best apprentices are recognised for their skills and efforts and given a chance to compete at the prestigious NSW Training Awards in September. Training an apprentice, trainee or student for their future career is both exciting and rewarding and nominating an individual or organisation for an award will show your pride in their achievements and your commitment to their training. Students can be nominated if they complete or are due to complete their apprenticeship or traineeship between October 1, 2017, and September 30, 2018. The Awards will also showcase the state’s world-class Smart and Skilled Vocational Education and Training (VET) system and the many career and training options it provides for business. More and more students, parents and teachers are realising that VET is a credible alternative to university for securing a well-paying, quality job. Nominations for the Awards will close this Friday, March 16. Lodge nominations now

Club supports elders TRAVELLING costs to the Elders Olympics is going be a little easier following The Westport Club’s donation to cover the cost of the bus hire to transport local Aboriginal Elders to Inverell to partake in the Games from April 11-13. The presentation of the club’s donation took place at a barefoot bowls fundraiser on Saturday (March 11) which was held at The Westport Club. Elders and around 30 others enjoyed a fun afternoon of bowls with all proceeds from the day also helping to cover travel and accommodation costs for the Games. A Welcome to Country and a symbolic didgeridoo playing preceded the presentation of The Westport Club’s sponsorship before the barefoot bowls fun kicked off. Jenny Edmunds, The Westport Club’s Community and Sports Manager said: “The Elder Games are an important event to the Aboriginal community and our club is proud to support the Birpai Elders who are attending. “I met with the Elders a few months ago to discuss this sponsorship and offered further support through this barefoot bowls fundraiser.” The Elder Olympics brings senior members (participants must be over 50 years) of each Aboriginal Community together for a two-day event which includes a full day of ‘game activities’ and a presentation dinner.

Algebra is a maths headache

WHAT do broken bones and algebra have to do with each other? I’m glad you asked, because the answer is a lot, or much. I have only just realised why I was so bad at maths during my schooldays. I was thinking about something entirely different. I wonder if they will let me do another test. I might pass this time My research says that a long time ago people took al, meaning the, and gebr, meaning reuniting something that was broken, and developed a new phrase. Over the years the Italians took two words from that phrase and formed algebra. Until at least the 17th century the word meant medical treatment, and probably still does in some areas. My big dictionary says algebra refers to the surgical treatment of fractures. It comes from Italian, also Spanish and Latin. The 16th century algeber (fancifully identified by early writers with the name of the Arabic chemist Geber was either taken directly from Arabic or from French algebre, but the Italian algebra became the accepted form). My Webster says algebra refers to “the putting together of broken things”. In 1541 Robert Copland writing in Guydon’s Formula referred to the helps of algebra and of dislocations. Then in 1565 John Halle talked

my

LAURIE BARBER

about the “Araby” word algebra as signifying the fracture of bones as well as “sometimes” the restoration of the same. So, I take it you can have your bones restored by algebra. It still applies in some parts of the world. But I’m not a medical person. Over the years the meaning changed to the reduction of fractures to whole numbers and then to binding together. It seemed to move away from medical matters into using symbols, or numbers, to represent things. So if you wanted to fix a broken leg, the symbols X and Y were all you needed, so long as the right bits joined at the right places. Eventually algebra came to represent a whole host of mathematical equations, such as commutative algebra, linear algebra, quadruple algebra and algebra of logic. R. Hareley described the different types of algebra, but if I tried to explain the different types I would confuse

you and me, so I won’t try. The American Webster dictionary says of algebra “that branch of mathematical analysis in which signs are employed to denote mathematical operations”. The Merriam-Webster book gives only one definition of algebra “bonesetting fracture”. The Macquarie dictionary defines algebra as “the mathematical art of reasoning about quantitative relations by means of a systematical notation including letters and other symbols. Now you know why I failed algebra. In my big dictionary Sir Henry Billingsley described algebra as “the more secret and subtill part of arithmetic, commonly called algebra”. De Morgan described algebra, after suggesting it got its Arabic name “from the restoration of the term which completed the square and reduction of the equation by extracting the square root”. I always wondered what it was all about. It’s still a headache to me. Algebra produced a few other words, such as algebraic “pertaining to algebra”, algebraical, algebraically, algebraist “one versed in algebra” and even algebraist. But I was more interested in the person who called himself an algebraist. There is such a person. I like Wilfred Funk’s definition of algebra “to the schoolchild today, it’s just a mathematical headache”. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

PLENTY of club championship action last weekend with the team of Bill Brooker, Peter Marsden, Phil Saville and Jeff Purdy now into the final after defeating three generations of the Hackney clan on Saturday morning, and then backing up to see off Gordon Wagner’s team in the afternoon. After 20 ends, Tony Kundicevic and Adolf Giacovani were 18 all with last year’s pairs champions Ross Laurie and Kevin Pampling. Tony and Adolf snatched 2 shots on the last end to win their game and progress to the next round. Bill Reid and Andy Beazley also played shot for shot with father and son combination Dave and Josh Carney. Nothing separated the two teams after 21 ends with the score 20 all. Bill and Andy scored 2 shots on an extra end to also progress to the next round. Historic game popular now “ It’s also great fun and you get to meet lots of different people ... We want to provide a place “

for people to come out and have a nice meal in a family-orientated atmosphere

By SUE PATERICK ACCORDING to Tenpin Bowling Australia (TBA), the ancient Egyptians played a primitive form of bowling about 5200 years ago. Bowling was also played in Germany about 200 BC and in England and The Netherlands in about 1100. Dutch settlers first introduced the game to America in the 16th century and an extreme form of bowling was also played in Scotland. A form of bowls was also played in Italy and France. Tenpin Bowling began in Australia at Ballart in Victoria in 1885, and the game spread throughout Australia. The early centres were manually operated but when automatic pin-setting machinery was invented the game’s popularity exploded. Hurstville in Sydney opened the first fullyautomatic centre in 1960. TBA says tenpin bowling is the world’s second most-played sport, with over 200 million participants annually. Kempsey’s Galactic Tenpin Bowling Centre has been reverberating to the sound of large bowling balls hitting glossy wooden lanes for about 30 years. Owners Matthew Sanders and Nadine Secomb took over in May, 2015. According to Matthew, they were looking for a business opportunity and the bowling centre seemed like an exciting adventure for them both. They also thought they could bring the business back to its former heydays. “The Macleay Valley is such a beautiful area, and it is very community orientated,” Nadine added. “When you’re running a business in a small town you get to know people really well”. Matthew has been involved with tenpin bowling since he was a young lad. He thinks it is a great sport because it can be played by people of all ages, abilities and in all weather conditions. “It’s a sport you can play by yourself or as a team, a bit like golf,” Matthew said. Matthew and Nadine also thought Kempsey could do with something that was a fun entertainment as well as a sport. “Tenpin bowling keeps you active and provides great eye/hand coordination,” Nadine said.

Owners of Kempsey’s Galactic Tenpin Bowling Centre, Matthew Sanders and Nadine Secomb, have created a fun place for families to spend time together and play an exciting sport “It’s also a very technical sport because technique, the type of bowling ball you use and different oil conditions on the lanes all effect the overall result you achieve. “It’s also great fun and you get to meet lots of different people”. Since they took over the centre there have been many improvements, and more are being planned and implemented like outside seating for their refurbished cafe. Inside already seats about 45 and Matthew and Nadine want to provide for another 50 people outside so they can cater for bigger functions. “We want to provide a place for people to come out and have a nice meal in a familyorientated atmosphere,” Nadine said. Galactic Tenpin Bowling is also accredited with TBA, which means playing league at this centre could lead you to state or national levels. “One of our bowlers, James McGinty, is a former Australian coach and rep, and James Roods, who works here, is also a TBA accredited

coach,” said Matthew. “You can take the sport as far as you like.” Matthew and Nadine have also been involved with the local schools who have adopted tenpin bowling as part of their sporting curriculum. Galactic Tenpin is associated with local organisations who cater for clients with disabilities and special needs. The centre is also included in the New South Wales Country Challenge events. In 2017 the ladies team placed second in our zone, which saw them compete in the state finals. The men’s A Team won the zone competition for the first time in 30 years and they also performed competitively at the state finals. Each month bowlers from the leagues who perform well are eligible to become Bowler of the Month. These 12 monthly winners will compete in the Bowler of the Year comp for a prize of $2000. So far in 2018 Martin Vandenberg won Bowler of the month for January and George Ackerley took

out the February competition. Building up their competitions is part of Matthew and Nadine’s strategy to encourage a renewed rejuvenation in tenpin bowling in Kempsey. Galactic Tenpin Bowling also caters for birthday parties and special functions at great prices. The centre’s team can put together a package to suit your needs. It is located at 13-15 South Street in South Kempsey and is open seven days a week from 9am to late. Competitions are held on various days and nights throughout the week and on the weekend. For more information check them out on Facebook, go to www.galactictenpin.com.au or phone 6562 8689.

Close racing in Sailing Club Summer series

Terry Howard in Ratz and Tony Walker in Deep Purple were involved in a close tussle during their race

THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club held race 7 of the summer series with a handicap start on Sunday under mostly sunny skies in a lightish southerly, starting in the last of the run-out tide, which then turned and ran in for the rest of the race. In the catamaran division, Frank O’Rourke on Dino made up the 20 minute head start given to Dave Winter on Spica to still finish nearly 2 minutes ahead on handicap. Of course, Dino was well ahead of Spica once the yardsticks were applied. Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant also made up a 20 minute head start to take the monohull handicap win ahead of tight battle for 2nd where Steve Bohlsen and Ed Molony in Splash Dance finished one second, the length of their fixed spinnaker pole, ahead of a fast closing

Simon Gandy and Steve Couch in Voyager. These were followed by Terry Howard in Ratz, Stuart Symons and Sharon Carney in Big Bang, Elsa Gandy and Isla Smith in Flying Fish, Phil Lillehagen and Jane Cooper in Elmo, Tony Walker in Deep Purple, Andrew Hurrell in Jupiter, and finally, after a capsize and a broken tiller extension, Peter Nyberg in Britannia. Applying the yardsticks in this division shook things up a lot more except for Flembouyant still winning by a long way. Ratz was 2nd followed by Voyager, Flying Fish, Big Bang, Splash Dance only 28 seconds ahead of Elmo, Deep Purple, Jupiter, and Britannia. Next weekend is race 9 of the summer series starting at 2pm. Paul Robertson is rostered on duty.

footytips

Good start, but then ... WELL, what a start to NRL season 2018. Your Local Independent got tipsters off to a flyer tipping the Dragons to beat the Broncos and then sealed the weekend by selecting the Titans over Canberra. Unfortunately almost everything (except for the Cowboys) went awry in between. The start of the season is always tough, trying to decipher whether ordinary performances are just rust, or whether teams have genuine issues. It will take several rounds for the dust to settle. However a few things are certain: The Storm without Cooper Cronk will still be a force to go back-to-back. Newcastle are no longer the easybeats. The Rabbits still wear the ‘inconsistent’ tag. The Titans won’t miss the Hayne Plane. The biggest question mark of Round 1 sits over the Brisbane Broncos, who were the only loser of the three Qld teams. Master coach Wayne Bennett has genuine issues with the make-up of his team, especially around the halves. His predicament gets no easier this weekend with the Cowboys chasing more blood after a bright start to their season. OK, let’s tip some winners: Sharks v Dragons (Thursday, March 15, 7.05pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium, Cronulla): Were the Dragons really good or the Broncos really bad in the season opener? Well that question will be answered in the first game of Round 2. The Sharks, who fell to the Cows in the opener, will be keen to post premiership points, but

they will find the Dragons a tough hurdle. Luke Lewis not expected to play for Sharks. The Dragons looked very crisp last weekend. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Roosters v Bulldogs (Friday, March 16, 5pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Two teams who were below their best and recorded first round losses. Luke Keary (injured) is expected to link up with Cooper Cronk in the halves, giving the Roosters an expected lift. Much was expected of the Chooks with Cronk in control, but that was not the case last weekend. Same for the Dogs with a host of new talent on board. Expect the Roosters to be the first of this pair to find their stride. Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Broncos v Cowboys (Friday, March 16, 7.05pm, Suncorp Stadium): These two teams just keep throwing up epic battles, however don’t be surprised if the Cows assert their authority in this Qld derby. Brilliant Number 6 Michael Morgan is likely to play, giving North Qld an even tougher look than the team that overcame the Sharks in the opener. This may be the year the Broncos become the ‘poor cousins’. Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Warriors v Titans (Saturday, March 17, 2.05pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): The Warriors started season ’18 with a bang … but can they continue. There was plenty of promise in their win over the Rabbits, but … there always is a ‘but’. The Titans were terrible and then excellent. Tough one to call. The Gold Coast initially looked ordinary

Sharon Griffiths

against big, hard-running ball-carriers and the Warriors have plenty of those. However they showed incredible tenacity to come back from 18-0. Comes down to discipline. Your Local Independent tips: Titans Panthers v Rabbitohs (Saturday, March 17, 4.30pm, Panthers Stadium, Penrith): Penrith looked very sharp in downing the highly-rated Eels last weekend while the Rabbitohs were well short of a run in their loss. This one comes down to South Sydney. If they are anywhere near their potential, they win. But, as in every season, it takes a few rounds to work out whose got real potential and who are the pretenders. The Panthers deserve to be favourites on last week’s performance. Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Storm v Wests Tigers (Saturday, March 17, 6.35pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): Can the Tigers cause an upset two weeks in a row. Short answer – no! The bookies’ early market has Melbourne at $1.17 and the Tigers out at $5.10. Anything can happen in a two-horse race, but can’t see it happening here. The Storm are likely to be even stronger with Billy Slater expected to make a return for his 300th NRL game. Your Local Independent tips: Storm Sea Eagles v Eels (Sunday, March 18, 3.10pm, Lottoland, Sydney): Two teams who will be seething at missing out on Rd1 wins. Both teams are definite final eight contenders, but it just depends on how long it takes for each to hit their straps. A real toss-up. Your Local Independent tips: Eels

Raiders v Knights (Sunday, March 18, 5.30pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Doesn’t get any easier here. There is no way the Raiders should have let the Titans back into the game last weekend, which says a lot about their mental game. On the other hand, the Knights are no longer the ‘bye’ of the competition. But it is always hard to win away at Canberra. Your Local Independent tips: Raiders
